Pollen assemblages closely reflect the local vegetation that characterizes the salinity status, providing useful analogs for paleoecologxical reconstruction in regional deposits. Palynological evidences of surface sediments from the Coringa mangrove wetland were correlated with the physicochemical and sediment salinity records to observe the relationship between them. The statistical analysis of the data obtained here revealed a marked horizontal salinity gradient from north to south.. In this study, ordination (detrended correspondence analysis) of palynomorph groups has identified a salinity gradient of 1.1 to 3.0 PSU from the north to the south in the wetland. High palynomorph deposition and lower salinity are observed along channel margins due to the mixing of estuarine water during the rainy season. The mudflats along the transects show a lower diversity of plants in the pollen record and high total dissolved solids (TDS) than commonly found in the coastal wetlands. The presence of scrubby halophytic vegetation in the upper saltmarsh and oligohaline-freshwater vegetation in the low tidal saline marshes is a zonation pattern related to the localized influence of freshwater conditions. Palynomarine Index (PMI) reveals the highest freshwater/tidal inundation along Ramannapalem due to the presence of numerous riverine channels while the remaining part of the wetland has restricted tidal inundation leading to the conversion of mangrove forests to salt pans and paddy fields. Thus, the health and productivity of the mangrove ecosystem are also governed by hydrodynamics, catchment land use, water discharge in the channels, and tidal flushing. 相似文献

The seasonal distribution of metazooplankton and large-sized ciliates was studied in four ponds of different salinity in the solar salterns of Sfax (Tunisia). Total zooplankton abundance varied from 1 × 10 3 to 4.7 × 10 6 ind m –3. Salinity had a negative effect on the abundance of copepods and rotifers which were absent in the pond with the highest salt concentration (180) in which the number of taxa was low and Artemia or the ciliate Fabrea largely dominated the zooplankton community. Temperature and the presence of Dunaliella salina as prey appeared as key factors in controlling the abundance of Artemia, while organic detritus appeared as important in the diet of Fabrea. Change in zooplankton species composition along the hypersaline gradient (40–90) was primarily related to salinity. However, our data suggest the importance of both the abundance and composition of food in the spatial and temporal variations of some zooplankton species. 相似文献

The diversity and community structure of planktonic Actinobacteria in a freshwater river and five fresh/saline/hypersaline lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, China were investigated with a combination of geochemical and 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analyses. A total of 387 actinobacterial 16S rRNA gene clones were sequenced, and they could be classified into Actinobacteridae, Acidimicrobidae, and unclassified Actinobacteria. The Actinobacteridae sequences were distributed into five suborders (e.g., Corynebacterineae, Frankineae, Micrococcineae, Propionibacterineae, and Streptosporangineae) and unclassified Actinobacteridae. Some actinobacterial members (specifically Micrococcineae) were present in a wide range of salinities (from freshwater to NaCl saturation). Statistical analysis showed that salinity and salinity-related environmental variables (such as ions and total nitrogen) significantly ( r > 0.5; P < 0.05) influenced the distribution of planktonic actinobacterial community in the investigated aquatic biotopes. Our data have implications for a better understanding of the distribution of Actinobacteria in high-elevation lakes. 相似文献

Lupin ( Lupinus luteus L. cv. Weiko III) were grown in nutrient solution over a range of inorganic phosphate (P i) concentrations, with or without 50 m M NaCl. Plants with high P i (2 m M ) and salt showed progressive leaf necrosis and had higher concentrations of total phosphate than plants grown with high P i alone. Most of the extra total phosphate in salt treated plants was in the P i form. P i supply did not influence Na +, K + or Cl − concentrations in epidermal vacuoles or mesophyll cells. However, epidermal vacuoles accumulated more monovalent cations (Na + and K +) than Cl −, and in vacuoles of plants grown with 0.1 m M P i additional P i was accumulated, possibly to maintain charge balance. Plants grown with 2 m M P i did not accumulate additional P i in epidermal vacuoles, but showed higher phosphorus levels in cell walls. It is suggested that at moderate phosphorus concentrations P i plays a role in epidermal osmotic adjustment, possibly explaining the beneficial role of additional phosphorus on salt stressed plants. At high P i supply with salt, P i does not contribute to osmotic adjustment and instead accumulates in cell walls. However, the cause of leaf damage under conditions of high phosphorus supply and salinity is still not entirely clear. 相似文献

Both Parameletus chelifer and P. minor had univoltine life-cycles. For a period of 6–10 months almost no nymphs of either species were found. The first nymphs appeared near midstream in winter and later in spring when the ice had broken up, they were found in great numbers close to the bank of the main river. During spring, nymphs of P. chelifer colonized the newly flooded littoral faster, and a seasonal stream in an alluvial meadow in greater numbers, than did nymphs of P. minor. Both species also colonized 10 seasonal tributaries which showed that the springtime upstream colonization was a common behaviour. During the colonization of the seasonal stream in the alluvial meadow, the diel activity pattern changed in nymphs of both species. In the main river small nymphs showed a nocturnal activity, while large nymphs were active during day-time. In the seasonal stream, both small and large nymphs showed a diurnal activity. However, when the stream was flooded, small nymphs of both species showed nocturnal activity again. In both species, diurnal activity of mature nymphs continued during emergence. Reasons for shifts in diel activity are discussed. 相似文献

1. The impact of agricultural activities on waterways is a global issue, but the magnitude of the problem is often not clearly recognized by landowners, and land and water management agencies. 2. The Pomahaka River in southern New Zealand represents a typical lowland catchment with a long history of agricultural development. Fifteen sites were sampled along a 119-km stretch of the river. Headwater sites were surrounded by low-intensity sheep farming, with high-intensity pasture and dairying occurring in the mid-reach and lower reaches. 3. Water clarity decreased significantly from about 6 m in the headwaters to less than 2 m in the lower reaches. Benthic sediment levels increased significantly downriver, peaking at 35 mg m ??2 below several tributaries with high-intensity agriculture in their catchments. Periphyton levels were also significantly greater in the lower reaches than the headwaters, and coincided with increased nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (SRP) concentrations. 4. Macro-invertebrate species richness did not change significantly throughout the river, but species composition did with Ephemeroptera, and to a lesser extent, Plecoptera and Trichoptera dominating the headwater sites (where there was high water clarity, and low nutrient and periphyton levels). Downriver these assemblages were replaced by molluscs, oligochaetes and chironomids. 5. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that agricultural intensity and physical conditions associated with agriculture activity (e.g. impacted waters, high turbidity and temperature) were strongly associated with the composition of benthic assemblages at differing reaches down the Pomahaka River. 6. The present results indicate that quantifying agricultural intensity within a catchment, particularly relative livestock densities, may provide a useful tool for identifying threshold levels above which river health declines. 相似文献

The seasonal distribution of Aeromonas hydrophila in water and recovery rate from live river fish was investigated. The highest isolation rates of A. hydrophila occurred in water during the late winter followed by a progressive decline in density during the summer and monsoon seasons. The organism was recovered from fish throughout the period from which it was concluded that they form a reservoir which is unrelated to their density in water. The enterotoxigenicity of some environmental strains was tested in suckling mice and rabbit ileal loop. 相似文献

Freshwater inflows from river diversions may affect nekton populations by altering the salinity and temperature of estuarine waters. To investigate the influence of these environmental variables on the growth and survival rates of brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus and white shrimp Litopenaeus setiferus, we conducted field experiments in May and September 2007 to expose experimental animals to the range of different combinations of salinity and water temperature that commonly occur in an estuarine environment. Growth rates for shrimp held in mesocosms for approximately 7 days were compared among four locations and three treatments; locations were identified by the dominant marsh vegetation and distance from the Gulf of Mexico (low to high salinity: Intermediate, Brackish, Saline UE = Saline Up Estuary, Saline DE = Saline Down Estuary). At each location, the treatments were replicated four times and included shallow water with additional food, shallow water without food added, and deeper water (an attempt to expose animals to lower temperatures). Our experiments were designed to test the null hypothesis that shrimp growth and survival rates did not differ by location or treatment. Both brown shrimp and white shrimp grew more slowly at the Intermediate than higher salinity locations. Potential prey (benthic infauna) biomass was relatively low at both the Intermediate and Brackish locations in May, and both shrimp species consistently grew faster in mesocosms where food was added. We conclude that reduced growth in low salinity environments is likely due to the combined effects of increased metabolic costs and less food in these areas. River diversions that reduce estuarine salinities over a large portion of available habitat during peak recruitment periods may reduce overall growth rates and shrimp productivity in the affected areas. 相似文献

A study was undertaken to examine the activity and composition of the seasonal Baltic Sea land-fast sea-ice biota along a salinity gradient in March 2003 in a coastal location in the SW coast of Finland. Using a multi-variable data set, the less well-known algal and protozoan communities, and algal and bacterial production in relation to the physical and chemical environment were investigated. Also, the first coincident measurements of bacterial production and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a sea-ice system are reported. Communities in sea ice were clearly autotrophy-dominated with algal biomass representing 79% of the total biomass. Protozoa and rotifers made up 18% of biomass in the ice and bacteria only 3%. Highest biomasses were found in mid-transect bottom ice. Water column assemblages were clearly more heterotrophic: 39% algae, 12% bacteria and 49% for rotifers and protozoa. Few significant correlations existed between DOM and bacterial variables, reflecting the complex origin of ice DOM. Dynamics of dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (DOC, DON and DOP) were also uncoupled. A functional microbial loop is likely to be present in the studied ice. Existence of an under-ice freshwater plume affects the ecosystem functioning: Under-ice water communities are influenced directly by river-water mixing, whereas the ice system seems to be more independent—the interaction mainly taking place through the formation of active bottom communities. 相似文献

The seasonal savannas (cerrados) of Central Brazil are characterized by a large diversity of evergreen and deciduous trees, which do not show a clear differentiation in terms of active rooting depth. Irrespective of the depth of the root system, expansion of new foliage in deciduous species occurs at the end of the dry season. In this study, we examined a suite of leaf traits related to C assimilation, water and nutrients (N, P) in five deciduous and six evergreen trees that were among the dominant families of cerrado vegetation. Maximum CO 2 assimilation on a mass basis ( Amass) was significantly correlated with leaf N and P, and specific leaf area (SLA; leaf area per unit of leaf mass). The highest leaf concentrations of both nutrients were measured in the newly mature leaves of deciduous species at the end of the dry period. The differences in terms of leaf N and P between evergreen and deciduous species decreased during the wet season. Deciduous species also invested less in the production of non-photosynthetic leaf tissues and produced leaves with higher SLA and maintained higher water use efficiency. Thus, deciduous species compensated for their shorter leaf payback period by maintaining higher potential payback capacity (higher values of Amass) and lower leaf construction costs (higher SLA). Their short leafless period and the capacity to flush by the end of the dry season may also contribute to offset the longer payback period of evergreen species, although it may involve the higher cost of maintaining a deep-root system or a tight control of plant water balance in the shallow-rooted ones. 相似文献

- 1 The chemical characteristics of floodwaters in ephemeral rivers are little known, particularly with regard to their organic loads. These rivers typically exhibit a pronounced downstream hydrological decay but few studies have documented its effect on chemical characteristics and material transport. To develop a better understanding of the dynamics of floods and associated material transport in large ephemeral rivers, floods of the ephemeral Kuiseb River in south‐western Africa were tracked and repeatedly sampled at multiple points along the river's lower 220 km.
- 2 We quantified the composition and transport of solute and sediment loads in relation to longitudinal hydrological patterns associated with downstream hydrological decay. Source and sink areas for transported materials were identified, and the composition and transport dynamics of the organic matter load were compared to those described from more mesic systems.
- 3 Concentrations of sediments and solutes transported by floods in the Kuiseb River tended to increase downstream in association with pronounced hydrological decay. The contribution of particulate organic matter to total organic load is among the highest recorded, despite our observation of unusually high levels of dissolved organic matter. Hydrological decay resulted in deposition of all transported material within the lower Kuiseb River, with no discharge of water or materials to the Atlantic Ocean.
- 4 Our results suggest that longitudinal variation in surface flow and associated patterns of material transport renders the lower Kuiseb River a sink for materials transported from upstream. The downstream transport and deposition of large amounts of labile organic matter provides an important carbon supplement to heterotrophic communities within the river's lower reaches.

Macroinvertebrates were sampled from 15 sites along a dry-land river in northwestern Zimbabwe to assess biotic responses to
land use changes along the course of the river. The headwater sites were protected by a riparian corridor of native forest,
but this was replaced by intensive subsistence agriculture in the mid-reaches while the lower reaches were located within
a protected wildlife area with diverse and wide riparian forests. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that intensive
agricultural activities within the mid-reaches caused severe degradation of the stream physical habitat through increased
fine sediment deposition. This coincided with a significant decline in macroinvertebrate richness, diversity, and abundance
at the agriculturally impacted mid-reach sites. The presence of wide riparian zones at the lower river sites resulted in significant
improvements in stream physical habitat quality, and this was paralleled by significant recovery or reappearance of taxa that
had disappeared from the mid-reaches. We suggest that restoration of the riparian vegetation within the mid-reaches of the
Nyaodza River would lead to improved physical habitat and biotic health of this dry-land river. 相似文献

Aims: To determine the spatial and temporal variability in the abundance, structure and composition of planktonic bacterial assemblages sampled from a small, looped water distribution system and to interpret results with respect to hydraulic conditions. Methods and Results: Water samples were collected from five sampling points, twice a day at 06:00 h and 09:00 h on a Monday (following low weekend demand) and a Wednesday (higher midweek demand). All samples were fully compliant with current regulated parameter standards. This study did not show obvious changes in bacterial abundance (DAPI count) or community structure Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis with respect to sample site and hence to water age; however, the study did show temporal variability with respect to both sampling day and sample times. Conclusions: Data suggests that variations in the bacterial assemblages may be associated with the local system hydraulics: the bacterial composition and numbers, over short durations, are governed by the interaction of the bulk water and the biofilm influenced by the hydraulic conditions. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study demonstrates general stability in bacterial abundance, community structure and composition within the system studied. Trends and patterns supporting the transfer of idealized understanding to the real world were evident. Ultimately, such work will help to safeguard potable water quality, fundamental to public health. 相似文献

The mechanism responsible for the previously discovered phenomenon of acceleration of an ion flow along the normal to the axis of a beam-plasma discharge in a weak magnetic field is investigated. It is suggested that the ions are accelerated in the field of a helicon wave excited in the discharge plasma column. It is shown theoretically that, under actual experimental conditions, a helicon wave can be excited at the expense of the energy of an electron beam. The spectral parameters and spatial structure of the waves excited in a beam-plasma discharge in the frequency ranges of Langmuir and helicon waves are studied experimentally and are shown to be related to the parameters of the ion flow. Theoretical estimates are found to agree well with the experimental results. 相似文献

The flooding tolerance of Carex species was studied in relation to their field distribution and their capacity to form root aerenchyma under controlled conditions. In an alpine meadow, six Carex species were selected which were distributed in a clear zonation correlating with water content of the soil. Carex sempervirens and C. ferruginea were only found on nonflooded soil, the latter species preferring moister conditions. Carex davalliana and C. nigra were both associated with water-saturated soil, whereas C. limosa and C. rostrata preferred partially submerged conditions. Carex davalliana and C. limosa were bound to flooded soils with a relatively high redox potential and horizontally flowing groundwater. Carex rostrata and C. nigra grew in stagnant soil-flooded conditions with low soil redox potentials. The amount of aerenchyma in the roots of all species increased when grown in oxygen-deficient stagnant agar. This increase in root porosity, combined with increased root diameter, presumably improved internal aeration of the roots. Although all species survived experimental soil flooding, partial submergence was lethal to C. sempervirens and, surprisingly, also to the wetland species C. davalliana. Carex ferruginea showed a reduced growth rate during partial submergence. The three other species, all wetland plants, reached highest biomass production under soil-flooded and partially submerged conditions, with slower growth on free-draining soil. It is concluded that aerenchyma is not constitutive in the Carex species under study, and is best developed in Carex species from wetlands. Species with less aerenchyma perform poorly when soil-flooded, but conditions of partial submergence could even affect species with a considerable amount of root aerenchyma. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine the osmotic and ionic (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+) and Cl(-)) haemolymph concentrations in Gammarus oceanicus at different salinity levels. Being a species of marine origin it inhabits brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. G. oceanicus specimens were collected in January 2003 from the Gulf of Gdansk (salinity 7 psu). The animals were gradually acclimated to eight different salinity levels (5, 7, 14, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 41 psu) at a temperature of 5 degrees C and 100% oxygen saturation. The haemolymph osmolalities correlated positively with external salinity, from 545.4+/-17.3 mOsm in 5 psu to 1185.9+/-34.6 mOsm in 41 psu. G. oceanicus hyperregulated within the 5-31.5 psu range; above 31.5 psu it hyporegulated its body fluids in comparison to the external medium. At 31.5 psu (1017 mOsm) the haemolymph concentration of G. oceanicus was isoosmotic with the habitat. The haemolymph concentrations of all the studied ions, except K(+), correlated positively with their concentrations at the various salinity. 相似文献

The water potential of wheat and barley leaves considerably decreased with the decrease of the soil moisture percentage, with the increase of the eleotrical conductivity of the soil solution and with the increase in the exchangeable sodium percentage level. Also the leaf insertion level affected the values of water potential and the most negative values were found in the top leaves. 相似文献
