 物种在生态系统功能过程中并不是同等重要的,这已经是一个普遍接受的事实,而关键种和冗余种被认为是生态系统功能过程中两类极端的生物类群。由于关键种通常被认为在生态系统功能方面中有重要作用,因此有人认为,假如我们能够甄别生态系统中的关键种及其多方面影响的作用机制,我们就有可能得到整个或大部分生态系统功能过程的信息。因此,在考虑生物多样性保护,尤其是为了有效保护它们所产生的生态系统功能过程时,生态学家和保护生物学家们引入了关键种的概念。通过对关键种的保护,更有效地保护其所在生态系统的功能过程。通过对有关关键种研究的回顾,阐述了关键种的定量测度方法,关键种在保护生物学中的意义、应用及其局限。  相似文献

The concentrations of the acidic dopamine (DA) catabolites homovanillic acid (HVA) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) measured in human CSF are supposed to reflect the "turnover" of DA in the brain. The notion of "turnover" is, however, not synonymous with impulse nerve activity in the dopaminergic systems. Significant amounts of DOPAC and HVA could, indeed, be demonstrated in brain structures wherein dopaminergic innervation has not been documented. It must also be noted that DA is not only a neurotransmitter itself, but also a precursor of norepinephrine and epinephrine. Furthermore, in lumbar CSF, levels of biogenic amine catabolites partially reflect metabolism in the spinal cord and may have limited relevance to neurotransmission in the brain. To elucidate these points further, we determined the concentrations of DOPAC and HVA in 22 areas of six human brains and eight levels of six human spinal cords. The data were correlated with the concentration of DA. Quantitative determinations were done using HPLC with electrochemical detection, after solvent and ion-pair extraction. In this study, significant amounts of both DOPAC and HVA were demonstrated in brain structures not previously associated with dopaminergic innervation. The relatively lower DA concentration in these structures suggests that in these regions, the DOPAC and HVA concentrations are unrelated to dopaminergic neurotransmission. The possible role of capillary walls and glial cells in the catabolism of DA must be further evaluated. The demonstration of DOPAC and HVA in the spinal cord is another argument against the hypothesis that CSF levels of HVA and DOPAC reflect closely the activity of the dopaminergic systems in the brain.  相似文献

Efficiency in evolutionary games: Darwin, Nash and the secret handshake   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
This paper considers any evolutionary game possessing several evolutionarily stable strategies, or ESSs, with differing payoffs. A mutant is introduced which will "destroy" any ESS which yields a lower payoff than another. This mutant possesses a costless signal and also conditions on the presence of this signal in each opponent. The mutant then can protect itself against a population playing an inefficient ESS by matching this against these non-signalers. At the same time, the mutants can achieve the more efficient ESS against the signaling mutant population itself. This construction is illustrated by means of the simplest possible example, a co-ordination game. The one-shot prisoner's dilemma is used to illustrate how a superior outcome which is not induced by an ESS may be temporarily but not permanently attained. In the case of the repeated prisoner's dilemma, the present argument seems to render the "evolution of co-operation" ultimately inevitable.  相似文献

"Psychosomatic medicine" does not demand that the general practitioner function as a psychiatrist; rather, it is a psychiatric orientation that can increase the effectiveness of purely medical treatment for such conditions as neuroses. The general practitioner to whom the patient turns may achieve permanent results with nonverbal techniques where formal psychotherapy would be impracticable or unacceptable. The first aim is to relieve pressure so that the patient can regain his mental balance and thereby his self-confidence. Arts, hobbies, sports, and the like can be prescribed rather specifically according to the patient's personality and needs. Nutrition can be improved simply at first by prescribing needed additions to diet rather than imposing restrictions. Vitamin deficiency may by itself be the cause of neurosis or more serious mental disease, whereas psychic stress by itself may create a need for additional vitamin intake. Hormone therapy may be extremely helpful but must be based on clear indication and limited to specific purposes. Since lack of sleep and rest quickly impairs mental function, it is important for neurotic persons to learn relaxation as a necessity for sleep. Sedatives may be used in a crisis but should be abandoned as soon as possible. With all drugs there are problems of excess and habituation. The least, the mildest, the shortest dosage is the ideal. THE INITIAL STEPS OF PSYCHOTHERAPY ARE AVAILABLE TO ANY PHYSICIAN: Establishing rapport, noting how complaints are stated, encouraging ventilation, winning confidence rather than immediate results.  相似文献

Stimulus-response coupling systems responsible for defence and adaptation of organism to stressors are multi-target and very complicated pharmacological systems, including the neuroendocrine (stress) and immune system. The mode of action of adaptogens is basically associated with the stress-system (neuroendocrine-immune complex) and can be directed on the various targets of the system involved in regulation (activation and inhibition) of stimulus-response coupling. However, clinical studies performed according to the most modern standards are quite limited. On the other hand there is an extensive amount of clinical experience and also established use in self care etc. These aspects are planned to be dealt within a subsequent article which will be devoted to the application in three areas: self care, adjuvants in medicine and curative action in some diseases. At this stage, nevertheless, it seems possible to define some most important "stress-markers" for evaluation of efficiency of adaptogens in experimental and clinical pharmacological studies. They can be both activating (catecholamines, LT-s, cytokines, NO, etc.--"switch on" system--which activates energetic and other resources of the organism), and deactivating (corticosteroids and PGE2-endogenous mediators of cellular communications, which protect cells and whole organism from overreacting to the activating messengers--"switch off" system) stress-messengers. The balance between the activities of the "switch on" and "switch off" systems reflects the well being of the organism. It could be established on different levels of the homeostasis (heterostasis) with different levels of the sensitivity to stressors (Figure 8). The response of stress system--"reactivity" is different at the various levels of heterostasis and depends on adaptation--capacity of the organism (or a cell) to protect itself. In the process of adaptation to stressor's effects the basal levels mediators of switch on (e.g. NO) and switch of (e.g. cortisol) systems are increasing but their balance (the ratio) does not change. In other words, adaptogens increase the capacity of stress system to respond to external signals at the higher level of the equilibrium of activating and deactivating mediators of stress response. Consequently, plant adaptogens can be defined as "smooth" pro-stressors which reduce reactivity of host defense systems and decrease damaging effects of various stressors due to increased basal level of mediators involved in the stress-response. In further studies of adaptogens it seems important to find correlation between adaptogenic activity (a decrease in the "reactivity" of the organism--the basal level of activating and deactivating messengers: ILs, LTB4, NO, PGE2, cortisol, but not their ratio) and their therapeutic efficiency (symptomatic evaluation).  相似文献

Background

Inversion recombination elements present unique opportunities for computing and information encoding in biological systems. They provide distinct binary states that are encoded into the DNA sequence itself, allowing us to overcome limitations posed by other biological memory or logic gate systems. Further, it is in theory possible to create complex sequential logics by careful positioning of recombinase recognition sites in the sequence.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In this work, we describe the design and synthesis of an inversion switch using the fim and hin inversion recombination systems to create a heritable sequential memory switch. We have integrated the two inversion systems in an overlapping manner, creating a switch that can have multiple states. The switch is capable of transitioning from state to state in a manner analogous to a finite state machine, while encoding the state information into DNA. This switch does not require protein expression to maintain its state, and “remembers” its state even upon cell death. We were able to demonstrate transition into three out of the five possible states showing the feasibility of such a switch.

Conclusions/Significance

We demonstrate that a heritable memory system that encodes its state into DNA is possible, and that inversion recombination system could be a starting point for more complex memory circuits. Although the circuit did not fully behave as expected, we showed that a multi-state, temporal memory is achievable.  相似文献

Bacterioplankton community metabolism is central to the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, and strongly reactive to changes in the environment, yet the processes underlying this response remain unclear. Here we explore the role that community composition plays in shaping the bacterial metabolic response to resource gradients that occur along aquatic ecotones in a complex watershed in Québec. Our results show that the response is mediated by complex shifts in community structure, and structural equation analysis confirmed two main pathways, one involving adjustments in the level of activity of existing phylotypes, and the other the replacement of the dominant phylotypes. These contrasting response pathways were not determined by the type or the intensity of the gradients involved, as we had hypothesized, but rather it would appear that some compositional configurations may be intrinsically more plastic than others. Our results suggest that community composition determines this overall level of community plasticity, but that composition itself may be driven by factors independent of the environmental gradients themselves, such that the response of bacterial communities to a given type of gradient may alternate between the adjustment and replacement pathways. We conclude that community composition influences the pathways of response in these bacterial communities, but not the metabolic outcome itself, which is driven by the environment, and which can be attained through multiple alternative configurations.  相似文献

Recently, novel applications of the nitroxide radicals have been proposed as antioxidant and anti-cancer agents. In view of the significance of nitroxide radical as a potential pharmaceutical agent for various applications in biological systems, it will be important to investigate further whether nitroxide radicals have a neurotoxicity or not. Blood-brain barrier permeable nitroxide radical, 3-methoxycarbonyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine-1-oxyl (PCAM; five-membered ring nitroxide radical) would provide us more important information to explore the neuronal excitotoxicity of nitroxide radicals on the central nervous system. Every rat injected with PCAM showed limbic seizure with secondary generalization. PCAM administration resulted in neuronal cell loss in CA1 area, which is closely associated with the neurotoxicity of endogenous glutamate and nitroxide itself. More detailed studies on their possible toxicity of nitroxide radicals will be needed before the prospect of moving nitroxide from the experimental to the clinical arena when nitroxide radicals would be used for CNS disease in future.  相似文献

Population persistence in a new and stressful environment can be influenced by the plastic phenotypic responses of individuals to this environment, and by the genetic evolution of plasticity itself. This process has recently been investigated theoretically, but testing the quantitative predictions in the wild is challenging because (i) there are usually not enough population replicates to deal with the stochasticity of the evolutionary process, (ii) environmental conditions are not controlled, and (iii) measuring selection and the inheritance of traits affecting fitness is difficult in natural populations. As an alternative, predictions from theory can be tested in the laboratory with controlled experiments. To illustrate the feasibility of this approach, we briefly review the literature on the experimental evolution of plasticity, and on evolutionary rescue in the laboratory, paying particular attention to differences and similarities between microbes and multicellular eukaryotes. We then highlight a set of questions that could be addressed using this framework, which would enable testing the robustness of theoretical predictions, and provide new insights into areas that have received little theoretical attention to date.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of analyzing biological pattern recognition systems. As no complete analysis is possible due to limited observability, the theoretical part of the paper examines some principles of construction for recognition systems. The relations between measurable and characteristic variables of these systems are described. The results of the study are:
  1. Human recognition systems can always be described by a model consisting of an analyzer (F A) and a linear classifier.
  2. The linearity of the classifier places no limits on the universal validity of the model. The principle of organization of such a system may be put into effect in many different ways.
  3. The analyzer function F A determines the transformation of external patterns into their internal representations. For the experiments described in this paper, F A can be approximated by a filtering operation and a transformation of features (contour line filter).
  4. Narrow band filtering (comb filter) in the space frequency domain is inadequate for pattern recognition because noise of different bandwidths and mean frequencies affects sinusoidal gratings differently. This excludes the use of a Fourier analyzer.
  5. The relations between the measurable variables, which are the probabilities of detection (P D curves), and the characteristic variables of the recognition system are established analytically.
  6. The probability of detection not only depends on signal energy but also on signal structure. This would not be the case in a simple matched filter system.
  7. The differing probabilities of error in multiple detection experiments show that the interference is pattern specific and the bandwidth (steepness of the P D curves) is different for the different sets of patterns.
  8. The distance between the reference vectors in feature space can be determined from the internal representation of the patterns defined by the model. Through multiple detection experiments it is possible to determine not only the relative distances between the patterns but also their absolute position in feature space.

This discussion focuses on discontinuities in both natural and technological systems caused by the introduction of exotic species into areas which they would not have been able to reach without human assistance or other alterations to native communities. The case histories of both the Asian clam and the zebra mussel are particularly instructive because of their recent introductions and the dramatic impact they have had on both natural and technological systems. Control of these mollusc species in technological systems (e.g. water intake systems) is effective to a degree but requires constant attention and utilization of resources. If control is neglected there could be extremely serious consequences. At present, no inexpensive means exist for controlling their effects, and further geographical distribution in North America is highly probable. The mollusc case histories do not appear to be linear and, in some instances, may not be continuous. Some importations of exotic species were deliberate (such as the gypsy moth, Porthetria dispar), but their escape into natural systems has often been accidental or, a less charitable person might say, careless. A viable strategy for coping with discontinuities is elusive. Discontinuities will, undoubtedly, have a major effect on the possibility of sustainable use of the planet or, to use the currently popular term, sustainable development.  相似文献

Plasticity-mediated changes in interaction dynamics and structure may scale up and affect the ecological network in which the plastic species are embedded. Despite their potential relevance for understanding the effects of plasticity on ecological communities, these effects have seldom been analysed. We argue here that, by boosting the magnitude of intra-individual phenotypic variation, plasticity may have three possible direct effects on the interactions that the plastic species maintains with other species in the community: may expand the interaction niche, may cause a shift from one interaction niche to another or may even cause the colonization of a new niche. The combined action of these three factors can scale to the community level and eventually expresses itself as a modification in the topology and functionality of the entire ecological network. We propose that this causal pathway can be more widespread than previously thought and may explain how interaction niches evolve quickly in response to rapid changes in environmental conditions. The implication of this idea is not solely eco-evolutionary but may also help to understand how ecological interactions rewire and evolve in response to global change.  相似文献

Major differences between the Western and "Russian" (Zavarzin, 1995) paradigms in ecology and evolutionary biology are described. The "Russian" paradigm suggests that there exist two, rather than one, quite independent lineages--species evolution and ecosystem evolution. This is based on the idea that life may exist just as a nutrient cycle. The main terms and concepts of the "Russian" paradigm are defined more exactly. An attempt is made to develop this paradigm so that it would be possible to describe not only phenomenology, but also mechanisms of ecosystem evolution. To simplify evolutionary phenomena logically, it is suggested to use the concept of conditionally complete causal explanation (Lekevicius, 1984; 1985), i.e. deduce evolutionary mechanisms from major principles of functioning. This methodology is adapted to model the main stages of the evolution of nutrient cycles (3.8-2.0 bln. y.a.) and the appearance and evolution of biophagy (1.7-0 bln. y.a.). Based on a multitude of examples, it is shown that these are functional constraints that are the forces directing evolution; those constraints emerge during the interaction of organisms and while the latter interact with the abiotic environment. Since the structure of an ecosystem is non-rigid, each species is able to accumulate features useful to both an ecosystem and itself. Those are individuals that die and reproduce, whereas all structures, from macromolecules to ecosystems, evolve.  相似文献

Although ethylene oxide is a reliable sterilizer, the process may be limited by diffusion. Thus, situations may exist where microorganisms are protected from the sterilizing gas. It is possible that the exterior of a substance may be sterilized, whereas the interior is not. We investigated three general types of materials in which this limitation of diffusion could occur: the bore of glass and plastic tubing, the center of cotton balls, and plastic adhesive film/paper backing interface. These materials were contaminated as close to their geometric center as possible with Bacillus subtilis var. niger spores occluded in crystals of sodium chloride. After exposure of the contaminated materials (except aluminum foil) to ethylene oxide, thioglycolate broth (a standard sterility-test medium) indicated sterility, whereas Trypticase Soy Broth indicated nonsterility. It is likewise possible that aerobic microorganisms, surviving in or on material after exposure to dry heat or steam sterilization processes, would not be recovered by thioglycollate broth. Entrapped aerobic organisms will probably not grow out in the low oxygen tension zone of an anaerobic medium such as thioglycollate broth. It is recommended than an aerobic medium such as Trypticase Soy Broth be used concurrently with thioglycolate broth for sterility testing.  相似文献

According to conventional theory the product of the transport flowrate and the mean transit time of a tracer through a system yields the equilibrium volume of distribution for the tracer, regardless of tracer kinetics or space geometry. Experimental results do not support this notion. The influence of measurement time on the volume measured with a bolus technique is addressed using systems theory to analyze a tissue-impedance form of the Sangren-Sheppard model. Assymptotic solutions show that the volume estimates are governed by a time constant, tau, related to diffusion in the tissue, to tissue capacity, and to wall permeability, and by a dimensionless ratio, f, describing a relation of tau to vascular transport time. A third parameter, g, describing the relative contributions to overall resistance to diffusion of effective permeability and of limited diffusivity in the tissue, is shown to be of less importance. The derived tau is similar to but not equivalent to the often cited "characteristic time". The "equilibrium" volume of distribution is defined as that which would be measured if equilibrium were allowed to establish. The "non-equilibrium" volume of distribution is defined as that which would be measured given finite times and is shown to approach the "equilibrium" volume as such times increase. Tracer equilibration is not required to accurately measure the "equilibrium" volume. When there is no flow limitation (f much less than 1) a measurement time of tau (plus vascular transit time) would yield a "non-equilibrium" volume only 33% of the "equilibrium" volume; a time of 2 tau would yield 55%; a time of 10 tau would yield effectively the total equilibrium volume. Finite diffusivity in tissue and permeability restrictions can have significant effects on the proportion of the volume measured.  相似文献

There is unwarranted satisfaction with the view that MHC polymorphism evolved because there was a selective advantage in having a variety of MHC proteins to bind a variety of peptide subsets for presentation to T cells. While this may, in part, explain its maintainance, polymorphism may have evolved initially to reject foreign virus "grafts". The possession of similar membranes promotes aggregation between "like" cells, but it also promotes aggregation between the cells and viruses which retain membrane components of their previous host. The selection pressure afforded by hostile virus "grafts" would favour cells which developed polymorphic membrane components (since "like" will not aggregate with "not-like"). This polymorphism would have evolved before the appearance of multicellular organisms. Thus, the evolution of modern immune systems would have been imposed upon pre-existing polymorphic systems. A path this evolution may have taken involves the development of mechanisms for intracellular distinction between self and not-self.  相似文献

Monoraphidium braunii glutamine synthetase is inactivated by several mixed-function oxidation systems. Inactivation requires oxygen and a metal cation as it does not take place under anaerobic conditions or in the presence of EDTA. Glutamine synthetase can be protected against that inactivation by peroxidase and catalase but not by superoxide dismutase indicating that hydrogen peroxide is involved in the process, although hydrogen peroxide is not itself effective. The oxidative modification of glutamine synthetase renders the protein more sensitive to temperature and susceptible to proteolytic attack. This has been demonstrated by measuring by quantitative immunoelectrophoresis the levels of glutamine synthetase antigen, in enzymatic preparations treated with different oxidation systems. Besides, immunoblotting of crude extracts in the presence of mixed-function oxidation systems shows the disappearance of material cross-reacting with anti-glutamine synthetase antibodies. Other results show that glutamine synthetase from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii could be subjected to the same kind of oxidative inactivation. The possible regulatory role of oxidative modification of glutamine synthetase in green algae is discussed.  相似文献

The origin of life on Earth remains a mystery, but the question can still be approached with scientific rigor. Identifying life??s origins requires the definition of life itself, which has been described as a self-sustaining system capable of Darwinian evolution, although it's also possible that there is no good scientific definition. All known living systems contain linear strings of information based on DNA, a molecule that makes Darwinian evolution possible through replication and mutation. This review explains the scientific concepts and issues underlying the origin of life, possible mechanisms of origins, and the features of living systems that can arguably be viewed as an inevitable consequence of the earliest molecules.  相似文献

With the present review, we intend to highlight the importance of considering the age- and development-dependent occurrence of comorbidity in ADHD and to outline distinct trajectories of symptom progression with possible impact on course and outcome of ADHD. The review will focus on introducing the concepts of "developmental epidemiology" and "developmental comorbidity". Psychiatric and non-psychiatric age-dependent comorbidity can be seen in the majority of children, adolescents and adults with ADHD, resulting in a severe impairment of everyday life with considerable functional and psychosocial problems. Concerning the temporal order of occurrence, psychiatric conditions may be present before the appearance of first definite ADHD symptoms ("pre-comorbidity", such as temperament factors, sleep disturbance, autism spectrum disorders and atopic eczema). They may coincide with the time when ADHD symptoms reach a clinically significant level ("simultaneous comorbidity": enuresis, encopresis, developmental dyslexia). The majority of comorbidity, however, appears after the onset of ADHD in the course of disease ("post-comorbidity": tic disorder, depression and suicidality, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, conduct and substance use disorders, obesity and personality disorders). The aetio-pathophysiology of ADHD and its comorbid disorders and also the nature of comorbidity itself being highly heterogeneous, we additionally discuss possible models of comorbidity. In the future, longitudinal data on distinct patterns of symptom and comorbidity progression would help to refine disease classification systems, strengthen the power of future genetic studies and finally allow for more specific treatment strategies.  相似文献
