The Belgian Pollen Phone Service gives continuous information about the pollen content of the air. A comparison of the number of incoming phone calls with the pollen content of the air revealed a surprisingly good correlation. This article underlines the success of this service. It confirms the high susceptibility of hay fever sufferers at the beginning of the season. It also highlights that pollinosis is not always limited to birch and grass pollen allergy and it demonstrates the necessity for the continuous determination of the pollen content of the air. Allergies to mugwort pollen seem to be less important. The Pollen Phone Service is a prompt way to provide allergic subjects with recent pollen information.  相似文献

The prevalence of allergic disease has increased world wide during the last decades. Pollen allergy is the most typical form of allergic disease. The increase in its frequency during recent years is the most evident. Environmental factors play an important role in the problem of pollen allergy in large cities. The aim of this research is determination of allergenicity of Canna pollen in polluted and non-polluted conditions, detection of their allergenic proteins and also elucidation of some microscopic effects of air pollutants on pollen structure and proteins. Mature and immature pollen grains of Canna indica were collected from polluted and non-polluted areas. Pollen grains were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Mice were sensitized by injection of pollen extract and an adjuvant for five times. Allergy potency of different pollen extracts were compared by means of skin test, blood eosinophills number and IgE levels in sensitized and treated animals. Pollen proteins were studied by SDS-PGE and allergenic proteins were detected by immunoblotting techniques. Scanning electron microscope study of the pollen grains showed that in polluted areas, air born particles accumulated on the surface of pollen and changed both pollen's shape and pollen's tectum. Also many vesicles were released out of polluted pollen and the pollen material agglomerated on the surface of pollen. SDS-PAGE showed that different proteins exist in mature and immature pollen. In pollen collected from polluted area, some of protein bands between 22 and 45 kDa were disappeared . Also in all polluted pollen grains, protein content of pollen decreased in response to air pollution causing the release of pollen proteins. According to our experiments and regarding induction of allergic symptoms, the polluted pollen is more effective than non-polluted one, and mature pollen has more allergy potency than immature one.  相似文献

Pollen monitoring has become a standard investigation method for researchers in several disciplines; among them are Quaternary palynologists, who conduct experiments in order to gain insights that will help to interpret the content of pollen in sediments. A review of the literature shows how these experiments diversified during the 1920s and 1930s with an array of different research questions, ranging from pollination biology to hay fever studies. Quaternary palynologists gained renewed interest with the possibility of radiocarbon dating late Quaternary sediments and obtaining accumulation rates. Also, the comprehensive model of pollen deposition and the pollen budget studies by H. Tauber encouraged researchers to conduct similar experiments using the same type of pollen trap, which became the main trapping device for Quaternary palynologists. The high precipitation in the tropics inspired the development of alternative designs. The equipment used to assess the pollen content in the air has evolved from simple gravity devices to different types of apparatus using a vacuum pump or revolving rods that collect the pollen on impact. Silicone impregnated filters exposed perpendicularly to the wind can also yield a volumetric assessment and have proven useful in areas with a low content of pollen in the air. The literature review is followed by a brief account of the developments which established the basis for the formation of a group of scientists monitoring the pollen deposition at a network of sites using standard pollen traps, the Pollen Monitoring Programme (PMP). Over the last 15 years the network has collected a large dataset, which is now available to answer a number of research questions. A summary of selected regions and environments, for which pollen monitoring results are available, is provided to serve as a complement to the investigations mentioned above and to provide an overview that may stimulate new research.  相似文献

Pollen grains of 18 species of Pulsatilla in Ranunculaceae distributed in Asia and Europe were examined by LM and SEM, and exine ultrastructure of tricolpate pollen grains of P. chinensis and of pantoporate pollen grains of P. campanella was examined by TEM. Pulsatilla pollen is divided into four major types based on the aperture character, i.e. tricolpate, di- and tricolpate, pantocolpate and pantoporate. The revolutionary trend of pollen types is as follows: tricolpate→pantocolpate→pantoporate. Surface spinulate and perforate. According to density and size of sptnulae and distribution of perforation, the pollen grains of the genus can be divided into two groups. Thin sections of P. chinensis and P. campanella show endexine thickened at colpi and ora. Ektexine consists of a foot layer, a collumellae layer and a continuous, perforate tectum. The columallae layer is thicker than foot layer and tectum. Pollen morphology of Pulsatilla is similar to that of Anemone, but different in the distribution of spinules and perforation. Pollen information supports Wang’s view about systematic arrangment of species of Pulsatilla in China.  相似文献

In vivo and in vitro pollen germination and pollen tube growth are affected by air pollutants. The stimulation and inhibition of these pollen characteristics depend on the pollen species as well as on the pollutant and its concentration, the exposure time, the relative humidity during exposure and some other factors. Mitosis, gas exchange, size and chemistry of pollen can also be influenced by air contaminants. Pollen germination and tube elongation differ in their response to air pollution stress, and both are more susceptible in vitro compared to the in vivo situation. Some possible mechanisms of action are reported in this review study. The effects of air contaminants on pollen are discussed in relation to sexual reproduction, gametophytic selection and adaptation to stress. Pollenkonzentrationsmessungen wurden mit handelsüblichen volumetrischen Pollenfallen in 1,8 und 18 m über Grund an demselben Standort durchgeführt. Das Ziel der Messungen lag in der Untersuchung der möglichen Beeinflussung des Pollenfluges während verschiedener Niederschlagsereignisse.

Die Pollenfallen waren auf dem Meßfeld des Wetteramtes Essen (Deutscher Wetterdienst) aufgestellt. Die Messung des Pollenfluges erfolgte in stündlichen Abständen in den Saisons von 1988 und 1989. Die Daten wurden mit den Ergebnissen eines Regenschreibers an demselben Standort korreliert. Daneben wurden 1988 bei ausgewählten Regenereignissen Regenproben aufgefangen und ihr Pollengehalt untersucht.

Mit beginnendem Niederschlagsbeginn konnte häufig ein schlagartiger Anstieg der Pollenregistrierung der Fallen in Bodennähe festgestellt werden. Analysen von Regentropfen in demselben Zeitraum zeigten dagegen nur einen geringen Pollengehalt. Die Erklärung für diesen Effekt liegt in vertikalen Luftströmungen, die bei Regenbeginn die Pollenkörner turbulent zwischen den Regentropfen aus höheren Luftschichten zur Erde herunterdrücken. Das turbulente Herabdrücken während des Regenschauers ist auch nach Ferntransport möglich.

Weiterhin ist ein Anstieg von Pollenkonzentration in Bodennähe durch die Wirkung von Regentropfen möglich, die die Blüten direkt treffen und damit Pollen aus den Stamina heraussschlagen.

Aus diesen Beobachtungen ist zu folgern, daß sich ein Pollenallergiker während eines Niederschlagsbeginns in einem geschlossenen Raum aufhalten sollte, da aus dem Regenbeginn eine Akkumulation von Pollen in Bodennähe resultieren kann.

Pollen data from two volumetric samplers, located at heights of 1,8 and 18 m above the ground, were used to investigate the influence of rainfall on pollen incidence. The counts were made by means of hourly analysis of the pollen concentration in the pollen season 1988 and 1989. These data were correlated with the data of a rain gauge. The traps were located in Essen in the lower Rhine area at the measurement field of the regional weather bureau of the German Weather Service. Rain samples were analysed for their pollen concentration at the same place in 1988. Besides this rain droplets were analyzed for the pollen content.

With the begin of rainfall the pollen concentration can increase explosively near the ground layer. Rain samples do not contain pollen whereas pollen traps indicate a high air concentration of pollen. The explanation for this effect is seen in air currents which force airborne pollen between the rain droplets turbulent down to the earth after they were dispersed by air convection in higher levels. The turbulent transport of pollen down to the ground can also be observed after long distance transport with rain.

A second observed effect of the begin of rainfall which can explosivly increase the pollen concentration near the ground is the pollen emission caused by the hit of the rain droplets on to the stamina of flowers, which are ready for pollen emission. This effect was only observed with the ground trap, whereas the high level trap did not register similar pollen concentrations.

As a result pollinosis patients are affected by these two impacts and should avoid to go outdoor in beginning rainfall and should close their windows immediately.  相似文献

The worldwide human population suffering from allergies continues to increase. Pollen grains are a major source of airborne allergens and significant cause of these diseases. Therefore, continuous monitoring of pollen grains released and transported in the air locally or regionally is required to determine the prevalence of various pollen types and identify intra-day and intra-annual seasonal variations over time. In this study, we developed the first pollen calendar for Mexico City, which includes a large variety of taxa, many of which show a long Main Pollen Season which may last throughout the year. The analysis and comparison of daily, monthly and annual values showed that the occurrence and abundance of the main types of aero-allergenic pollen in the atmosphere were species of Fraxinus, Cupressaceae and Alnus, which occur during the periods from December through March, whereas airborne pollens of several species of Poaceae and Urticaceae occurred throughout the year. The variation in pollen concentration showed that the greatest intra-diurnal variations occurred during the second half of the day. Regarding the relationship of pollen with bioclimatic factors, the increase in temperature favoured the presence of pollen in the air, whereas the increase in pluvial precipitation and relative humidity was associated with a decrease in airborne pollen. Large tracts of the Valley of Mexico have atmospheric conditions that are conducive to the accumulation of airborne particles, including pollen. Anomalous winds from the southeast dominated the surface wind variability during the first months of 2010. These patterns induced extreme values in wind convergence at the lower levels of the atmosphere, which resulted in high concentrations of pollen at our sampling site. We suggest that these conditions are related to the warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation phenomenon (2009–2010).  相似文献

Fossil packrat middens are used to reconstruct late Quaternary environments in the arid Western U.S.A. Airborne pollen is contributed to middens both directly from the air, and through adherence to plant macrofossils. I examined the filtration of atmospheric pollen by Larrea tridentata leaves (resinous, with sparse recumbent hairs), Cercidium microphyllum twigs (glabrous with recumbent hairs) and Sphaeralcea ambigua leaves (covered with stellate hairs) and evaluated the potential biases of scavenged pollen on the interpretation of pollen records from middens. Pollen grains collected from the surfaces of the plants were most numerous during the spring when (airborne) pollen concentrations were high. Of the species investigated, the Sphaeralcea leaves filtered the greatest number of spring pollen grains from the air (3419 grains cm?2); captured pollen was very low during other seasons. Sticky Larrea leaves continuously captured airborne pollen ( = 246 grains cm?2). Pollen captured by smooth Cercidium was consistently low ( = 31 grains cm?2). Only the spring pollen was filtered in sufficient numbers to obtain minimum pollen counts of 200 grains by all 3 taxa. The plants frequently captured greater proportions of their own pollen. Pollen content of packrat middens will reflect the season of plant macrofossil collection and the species composition of the plants incorporated.  相似文献

Pollen allergies affect a large part of the European population and are considered likely to increase. User feedback indicates that there are difficulties in providing proper information and valid forecasts using traditional methods of aerobiology due to a variety of factors. Allergen content, pollen loads, and pollen allergy symptoms vary per region and year. The first steps in challenging such issues have already been undertaken. A personalized pollen-related symptom forecast is thought to be a possible answer. However, attempts made thus far have not led to an improvement in daily forecasting procedures. This study describes a model that was launched in 2013 in Austria to provide the first available personal pollen information. This system includes innovative forecast models using bi-hourly pollen data, traditional pollen forecasts based on historical data, meteorological data, and recent symptom data from the patient’s hayfever diary. Furthermore, it calculates the personal symptom load in real time, in particular, the entries of the previous 5 days, to classify users. The personal pollen information was made available in Austria on the Austrian pollen information website and via a mobile pollen application, described herein for the first time. It is supposed that the inclusion of personal symptoms will lead to major improvements in pollen information concerning hay fever sufferers.  相似文献

An analysis was made of the protein content of pollen loads produced by the bees in a hive situated in Viana do Bolo (Ourense, north-west Spain), to establish whether or not the relative quantity of protein in the pollen of each plant species influences the preference made by the bee of the flowers that supply pollen to the hive. This analysis was performed on all types of pollen that formed more than 5% of the pollen spectrum. Pollen load samples were collected directly from the hive from March to September. Pollen loads were separated by colour, and their specific homogeneity was confirmed microscopically. The Bradford method has been used for protein extraction and spectrophotometry was used for the determination of protein content. The results show that the different pollen loads have high protein content. Pollen of the plant species that reached relatively higher percentages in the pollen spectrum are also those that have the highest protein content. These were Cytisus scoparius type, uncultivated Poaceae, Quercus robur type, Sanguisorba minor, Salix fragilis and Spergularia rubra type. The pollen of the systematic units, which had pollen loads that could be identified at the level of species, maintained a constant value of protein content independently of the date the samples were obtained. The pollen of the systematic units, which had pollen loads that could be identified at the level of pollen type, has varied in protein content in the analyses performed on samples obtained on different dates. This result is due to the fact that the different species that integrate the pollen type flower on different dates, and thus have a pollenkitt with different characteristics.  相似文献

The literature is reviewed and new evidence presented that pollen produces odors, which serve multiple functions in pollination and defense. Pollen odor, which originates from pollenkitt, comprises volatiles that belong to the same chemical classes found in flower scents, that are in species-specific mixtures, and that contrast with odors of other floral parts. Pollen can also take up volatiles from surrounding floral odors, but this adsorption is selective and varies among species. Pollen odors are more pronounced in insect- than bird- or wind-pollinated plants, suggesting that volatile emission evolved in part under selection to attract pollinators. Pollen-feeding insects can perceive pollen odor and use it to discriminate between different pollen types and host plants. Pollen odor influences bee foraging, including the location of pollen sources, discrimination of flowers with different amounts of pollen, and hostplant recognition by pollen-specialist species. In the few wind-pollinated plants studied, odors of male flowers or pollen are comparatively high in -methyl alcohols and ketones; these volatiles may serve in pollen defense, with some known to repel insects. Pollen odor often includes chemicals with documented defense activity, which is probably aimed mainly at nonpollinator pollen-feeding insects and pathogens; an involvement in pollen allelopathy is also possible. Pollen volatiles comprise chemically diverse compounds that may play multiple roles, and their emission in pollen odor undoubtedly evolved under the principle, and often conflicting, selective pressures to both protect the male gametophyte and increase its dispersal by animals.  相似文献

Monotropsis odorata Elliott. is one of the most cryptic and relatively rare North American endemic species of the Monotropaceae; therefore, information concerning the biology of this achlorophyllous, mycotrophic angiosperm is limited. Bright field and fluorescence microscopic investigations of postpollination gynoecia reveal that pollen tubes follow a continuous pathway from the receptive surface of the stigma to micropyles of the ovules. The pollen tube pathway is characterized by discrete strands of transmitting tissue connecting an exudate-coated stigma to an exudate-filled, stylar canal that leads directly to exudate-coated placentae. Pollen tube growth appears restricted to those areas associated with an exudate. The gynoecial pathway for pollen tube growth in this taxon conforms to those described from other monotropàceous species.  相似文献

In parts of the world where teosinte and maize are grown in close proximity, there is concern about gene flow between them. Pollen is the primary vehicle for gene flow. Quantifying the biophysical properties of pollen, such as its settling speed and dehydration rate, is important for evaluating outcrossing potential. These properties were measured for teosinte (Zea mays subsp. parviglumis) pollen. Pollen was found to have an average settling speed of 0.165 m s(-1), which agrees well with theoretical values based on the size of the pollen grains. The conductance of the pollen wall for water was derived from the time rate of change of pollen grain size and gave an average conductance of 3.42x10(-4) m s(-1). Water potential, psi, of teosinte pollen was determined at various values of relative water content (dry-weight basis), theta, by using a thermocouple psychrometer and by allowing samples of pollen to come to vapour equilibrium with various saturated salt solutions. Non-linear regression analysis of the data yielded psi (MPa) = -4.13 theta(-1.23) (r2=0.77). Results for conductance and psi were incorporated into a model equation for the rate of water loss from pollen grains, which yielded results that agreed well (r2=0.96) with observations of water loss from pollen grains in air. The data reported here are important building blocks in a model of teosinte pollen movement and should be helpful in establishing the main factors influencing the degree and the direction of pollination between teosinte populations and between maize and teosinte.  相似文献

Geographical and temporal variations in the start dates of grass pollen seasons are described for selected sites of the European Pollen Information Service. Daily average grass pollen counts are derived from Network sites in Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, United Kingdom, Austria, Italy and Spain, giving a broad longitudinal transect over Western Europe. The study is part of a larger project that also examines annual and regional variations in the severity, timing of the peak and duration of the grass pollen seasons. For several sites, data are available for over twenty years enabling long term trends to be discerned. The analyses show notable contrasts in the progression of the seasons annually with differing lag times occurring between southern and northern sites in various years depending on the weather conditions. The patterns identified provide some insight into geographical differences and temporal trends in the incidence of pollinosis. The paper discusses the main difficulties involved in this type of analysis and notes possibilities for using data from the European Pollen Information service to construct pan European predictive models for pollen seasons. Summary Data from a Burkard volumetric sampler in a densely built-up area of North-central London, England are used to investigate the effects of rainfall on pollen concentrtions over four years. Pollen counts generally decreased with rainfall, although several episodes of increased pollen concentration have been recorded in London following the onset of precipitation.Pollen concentration is recorded as two-hourly pollen counts, while hourly records of nine meteorological variables, including rainfall amount and intensity, are obtained from the London site of the Meteorological Office. The two-hourly changes in concentration that take place during both «normal» rainfall events and during those displaying marked increases in pollen concentration are examined in relation to the patterns of rainfall, the wind regimes, synoptic situation and general characteristics of urban areas.The influence of rainfall in removing pollen from the air is also examined in relation to the rainfall intensity and size of pollen grains for selected taxa.  相似文献

Summary. Pollen accumulates starch reserves during development and the final stage of ripening. Before the anther opens, starch is totally or partially converted to pectins, glucose, fructose, sucrose, and to some unknown polysaccharides. Pollen is exposed to dispersing agents in an arrested developmental state which differs according to pollen water content. Pollen is classified as partially dehydrated or partially hydrated. The final water content may be reached before or after anther opening. Especially during exposure and dispersal, partially dehydrated pollen may interconvert soluble and insoluble reserves, modifying internal turgor pressure and hindering water loss or gain. Partially hydrated pollen is commonly devoid of mechanisms to conserve viability in time but has the advantage of quickly emitting pollen tubes on reaching the stigma. The phase that elapses from pollination to fertilization is re-examined giving special attention to pollen pistil interaction in compatible matings. Pollination induces an activation of the pistil. A number of changes take place in the different tissues of this organ that appear to support male gametophyte development and to assist fertilization. Thus pollination induces stigma secretion, the release of starch from the transmitting tissue and prolongs embryo sac viability. It appears that even those pollen grains that do not achieve fertilization have a synergistic role supporting others to do so.The pistil also has an effect on pollen tube growth. Pollen tube growth along the pistil is not continuous, accelerations and decelerations take place depending on the different tissues they traverse. The fact that pollen tube growth is heterotrophic, at the expenses of the pistil reserves, and that these reserves are not continuously produced confers the pistil with a role controlling pollen tube growth kinetics.  相似文献
