The relationship between distributional boundaries and temperature responses of some Northeast American and West European endemic and amphiatlantic rhodophytes was experimentally determined under varying regimes of temperature, light, and daylength. Potentially critical temperatures, derived from open ocean surface summer and winter isotherms, were inferred from distributional data for each of these algae. On the basis of the distributional data the algae fall within the limits of three phytogeographic groups: (1) the Northeast American tropical-to-temperate group; (2) the warm-temperate Mediterranean Atlantic group; and (3) the amphiatlantic tropical-to-warm temperate group. Experimental evidence suggests that the species belonging to the northeast American tropical-to-temperate group(Grinnellia americana, Lomentaria baileyana, andAgardhiella subulata) have their northern boundaries determined by a minimum summer temperature high enough for sufficient growth and/or reproduction. The possible restriction of 2 species (G. americana andL. baileyana) to the tropical margins may be caused by summer lethal temperatures (between 30 and 35 °C) or because the gradual disintegration of the upright thalli at high temperatures (>30 °C) promotes an ephemeral existence of these algae towards their southern boundaries. Each of the species have a rapid growth and reproductive potential between 15–30 °C with a broad optimum between 20–30 °C. The lower limit of survival of each species was at least 0 °C (tested in short days only). Growth and reproduction data imply that the restrictive distribution of these algae to the Americas may be due to the fact that for adequate growth and/or reproduction water temperatures must exceed 20 °C. At temperatures 15 °C reproduction and growth are limited, and the amphiatlantic distribution through Iceland would not be permitted. On the basis of experimental evidence, the species belonging to the warm-temperate Mediterranean Atlantic group(Halurus equisetifolius), Callophyllis laciniata, andHypoglossum woodwardii), have their northern boundaries determined by winter lethal temperatures. Growth ofH. equisetifolius proceeded from 10–25 °C, that ofC. laciniata andH. woodwardii from 5–25 °C, in each case with a narrow range for optimal growth at ca. 15 °C. Tetrasporelings ofH. woodwardii showed limited survival at 0 °C for up to 4 d. For all members of the group tetrasporangia occurred from 10–20 °C. The southern boundary ofH. equisetifolius andC. laciniata is a summer lethal temperature whereas that ofH. woodwardii possibly is a winter growth and reproduction limit. Since each member of this group has a rather narrow growth and survival potential at temperatures <5 °C and >20 °C, their occurrence in northeast America is unlikely. Summary Piona exigua Viets is a predaceous freshwater mite that can potentially affect the population densities of its cladoceran prey. As part of a study of the effect of Piona exigua on its prey populations we measured the effects of water temperature and prey density on the lifespan, age at first reproduction and per capita egg production of adult female mites. Mites were raised in the laboratory at five prey (Ceriodaphnia, Daphnia) densities (5, 15, 30, 60, 120/l) at 15° C and at four temperatures (10, 15, 18, 22° C) at c. 60 prey/l. In response to increased food level, mites increased the number of eggs laid to reach a maximum at 60 prey/l, the rate at which they were laid increased and the pre-reproductive period was shorter. Low temperatures prolonged the pre-reproductive period. At temperatures above 10° C, food level and temperature had more influence on the timing of reproductive events (growth rate, oviposition rate, age at first reproduction) than on the size of females at first reproduction. When temperatures exceed 10° C and food levels exceed 5 prey/l the major scope for reproductive plasticity in Piona lies in the timing and duration of egg production.  相似文献

The growth, reproduction and longevity of Diplogasteritus nudicapitatus, Paroigolaimella bernensis and Rhabditis curvicaudata were investigated under conditions of excess food within the temperature range 5°C–20°C. In all three species growth rate increased with temperature, and in D. nudicapitatus and R. curvicaudata the adult size attained varied significantly with temperature. P. bernensis did not reproduce at 5°C, but showed a progressive increase in reproductive output at higher temperatures. D. nudicaitatus showed increased egg production as temperature increased while R. curvicaudata had maximum egg output at 10°C. Longevity is temperature dependent, decreasing with higher temperatures. Virgin females survived for longer than reproducing females. The data indicate that while D. nudicapitatus and P. bernensis are thermophilic species, R. curvicaudata is adapted to lower temperatures.  相似文献

Competition experiments betweenPhaeodactylum tricornutum andSkeletonema costatum showed that even at temperatures higher than 10°C (i.c. 14°C), the development ofSkeletonema can be favoured by adjusting nutrient levels and nutrient ratios. Low NSi ratios were found to favourSkeletonema. Additionally, high NP ratios further enhanced the ability ofSkeletonema to dominate the cuftures. Contrary to some statements in literature, it seems that high concentrations of silicates are more important for the dominance ofSkeletonema costatum in large-scale cultures than just low temperatures. This finding is important with regard to stimulating the blooming ofSkeletonema costatum in natural phytoplankton populations as food for bivalve molluscs.  相似文献

Synopsis Mudminnows, Umbra limi, were euryphagic carnivores during the ice-free period consuming invertebrates of terrestrial and aquatic origins. In winter, diversity and amount of food eaten were reduced. Age 0 fish consumed aquatic invertebrates as did males aged 1 and 2+ but females aged 1 and 2+ consumed mainly fishes. In the laboratory mudminnows were able to capture small fish at temperatures of 12.6° C and less. Their rates of digestion of fish prey varied directly with temperature and estimates of time for 100%, gastric evacuation ranged from 161 h at 1.1° C to 26 h at 12.6° C. The ability to forage actively during winter and to digest food relatively rapidly at cold temperatures are seen as mechanisms to broaden the niche along dimensions of resources utilized and time, thereby increasing the chances of survival and reproduction in an environment with high temporal heterogeneity.  相似文献

The effects of sodium salt of 2.4-Dichlorophenoxi-acetic acid (2.4-D-Na) on the mortality and reproduction ofDaphnia magna have been tested.The mortality tests were performed in experiments with duration time of 24, 48 and 96 h at the temperatures of 15 and 20 °C. The toxic effect increased by 11–16 regarding 47% with increasing of temperature and exposure time.This herbicide (Dikonirt) affected adversely the reproduction of daphnids at concentration lower than tenth of LC50 value.  相似文献

Seeds ofPinus halepensis andPinus pinaster subsp.pinaster were subjected to four heat treatments (90, 110, 150 and 200 °C) for 1 and 5 min to investigate their tolerances to high temperatures resulting from fires. Another group of seeds of each species were not heated and considered as a control. Information on responses of seeds to high temperatures would help to determine whether or not the species are pyrophytes. Heating for 1 min at all temperatures did not affect the average germination ofPinus halepensis seeds whereas that ofP. pinaster subsp.pinaster seeds was decreased significantly when they were heated to 200 ° C. HoweverP. pinaster seeds were more resistant than that ofP. halepensis when heat treatment was 150 °C for 5 min. Data obtained also indicated that, in general,P. halepensis andP. pinaster subsp.pinaster seed germination is not favoured by a temperature increase than can be reached in soils during a fire. Thus, the species are not pyrophytes but colonizers of burnt sites.  相似文献

Sterilization values were determined forLegionella pneumophila in chlorine-free, chlorine-demand-free water at elevated temperatures. These values were calculated from experimentally determined D values of 2500 min, 380 min, 13.93 min, 0.74 min, and 0.45 min at 45°C, 50°C, 55°C, 60°C, and 66°C, respectively. D values, Z value and temperature coefficient do not indicate unusual thermal resistance. Sterilization values, the minimum time required to eliminate an aquatic population ofL. pneumophila at a given test temperature, indicate that temperatures greater than about 65°C may not be necessary for efficient disinfection of potable quality water. These values and monitoring of time and temperature parameters can help predict the efficacy of in situ heat treatment of potable quality waters harboringL. pneumophila.  相似文献

1. We studied the effects of fish water and temperature on mechanisms of competitive exclusion among two Daphnia species in flow‐through microcosms. The large‐bodied D. pulicaria outcompeted the medium sized D. galeata × hyalina in fish water, but not in the control treatment. Daphnia galeata × hyalina was competitively displaced 36 days earlier at 18 °C than at 12 °C. 2. It is likely that the high phosphorus content of fish water increased the nutritional value of detrital seston particles by stimulating bacterial growth. Daphnia pulicaria was presumably better able to use these as food and hence showed a more rapid somatic growth than its competitor. This led to very high density of D. pulicaria in fish water, but not in the controls. The elevated D. pulicaria density coincided with high mortality and reduced fecundity in D. galeata × hyalina, resulting in competitive displacement of the hybrid. 3. It is clear that the daphnids competed for a limiting resource, as grazing caused a strong decrease in their seston food concentration. However, interference may also have played a role, as earlier studies have shown larger Daphnia species to be dominant in this respect. The high density of large‐bodied D. pulicaria in fish water may have had an allelopathic effect on the hybrid. Our data are inconclusive with respect to whether the reached seston concentration was below the threshold resource level (R*) of the hybrid, where population growth rate and mortality exactly balance, as it would be set in the absence of interference, or whether interference actually raised the hybrid's R* to a value above this equilibrium particle concentration. 4. Our results do clearly show that fish‐released compounds mediated competitive exclusion among zooplankton species and that such displacement occurred at a greatly enhanced rate at an elevated temperature. Fish may thus not only structure zooplankton communities directly through size‐selective predation, but also indirectly through the compounds they release.  相似文献

Summary The feral pigeon in New York City was found to serve as a mechanical carrier of pathogenic strains ofCryptococcus neoformans. Of 94 feral pigeons freshly trapped in the city, 7 were found to carryC. neoformans on their beaks and feet, while their rectal swabs were negative. Following crop instillation ofC. neoformans in 3 feral pigeons, the fungus survived passage through the gastrointestinal tract and appeared in the fresh feces within one hour after inoculation and was still present 24 hours later. The internal body (rectal) temperatures of 57 feral pigeons recorded soon after capture in two seasons of the year, ranged from 41.5° C to 43.3° C and averaged 42.5° ± 0.39° C. The birds were able to maintain their high temperatures in the face of sustained cold, indicating the presence of a strong thermoregulating mechanism. A study of the growth and survival of 60 human strains ofC. neoformans on Sabouraud dextrose yeast extract agar slants revealed that 100 % of the cultures were able to grow at 39° C, 92 % at 40° C, 30 % at 41° C, 17 % at 42° C and 8 % at 43° C. Despite exposure to these temperatures for 7 days, 100 % of the human strains survived at 40° C, 97 % at 41° C, 95 % at 42° C, 91 % at 43° C, 88 % at 44° C, 47 % at 45° C and none at 47° C. Seventy strains ofC. neoformans of pigeon excreta origin showed a similar pattern of heat resistance, except that 11 % of these strains survived 47° C. The inability ofC. neoformans to grow at 44° C, a property shared by all 130 strains, provides a new species characteristic.C. neoformans was found to multiply rapidly in moist pigeon excreta extract, reaching counts up to 60 million per ml within 3 weeks, and to be still viable in moist as well as dessicated pigeon excreta extract after more than two years of storage at room temperature.Presented in part at the 26th VA-Armed Forces Pulmonary Disease Research Conference, Cleveland, Ohio, Jan. 23–26, 1967, and the 67th Annual Meeting American Society for Microbiology, New York, April 30–May 4, 1967. Development, reproduction and population growth of Thrips setosus Moulton (Thysanoptera, Thripidae), reared on a leaf of kidney bean, was studied under six different constant temperatures, and the effect on reproduction of short photoperiod during immature stages was examined. Survival rates from hatch to adult were more than 67.5% at temperatures between 17.5 and 27.5 °C, but less than 55% at 30 °C. Developmental rates increased linearly as rearing temperature increased. A total of 181.1 degree-days, above a developmental zero of 12.5 °C, were required to complete development from egg to adult oviposition. These data were related to records of field temperatures in Kurashiki in western Japan, and an estimate produced that, under outdoor conditions, a maximum of between seven and 12 generations could have developed annually between 1990 and 1999. There were no significant differences in mean adult longevity and mean fecundity among three temperatures (20, 22.5 and 25 °C). The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) was 0.1997 at 25 °C. Reproductive diapause was induced by a photoperiod less than 12 h at 20 °C.  相似文献

The effect of three different Scenedesmus food concentrations(0.04, 0.2 and 1 mg C l–1) on maternal investment wasstudied in two cladoceran species of similar size, Daphnia pulicariaand D.hyalina. It was observed that as food concentration decreased(between 1 and 0.2 mg C l–1), there was an increase insize, protein content, lipid content, carbon and mass of theegg, while, at the same time, the clutch size of the femalesbecame smaller. Such an increase in ‘per offspring investment’was reflected in an increase in body length, body carbon andbody mass of neonates as the food available for females decreased.However, in D.pulicaria this tendency was not maintained downat 0.04 mg C l–1 in which there was a decrease of theegg characteristics mentioned above. Although, there are notavailable all the egg and neonate parameters of D.hyalina at0.04 mg C l–1, the body length of the neonates was largerthan at 0.2 and 1 mg C l–1. These results show that, asfood diminishes, these two cladoceran species are able to respondby decreasing clutch size, but increasing the size of egg, therebyincreasing the probability of neonate survival. This tendencyis probably maintained until the food concentration is too lowand the females have to reduce the energy allocated for reproduction.  相似文献

In spring and early summer, a small population of the large-bodied Daphnia pulicaria coexists with a much larger population of the medium-sized hybrid Daphnia galeata × hyalina in the epilimnion of Lake Maarsseveen (The Netherlands). When large shoals of juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis) appear in the open water, both species start to migrate vertically. Since D. pulicaria has a larger body-size than D. galeata × hyalina, and is therefore competitive dominant over the hybrid, it is unlikely that both species interact via their common food resource, but they react both to fish predation. However, since they differ in size, and therefore in vulnerability for fish predation, both species adopt different strategies. The smaller bodied, and less vulnerable D. galeata × hyalina exhibits diel vertical migration ascending to the surface at dusk, and staying there during the night. In this way, benefiting from the higher temperatures of the surface layers. In contrast, the large-bodied, and more vulnerable D. pulicaria selects the deep cold hypolimnion water layers as refuge against fish predation. In this way it benefits from a safe habitat, free from fish predators, but on the other hand suffers from low water temperatures, which decrease its fitness. It is likely that the relatively higher temperature in the upper water layers serves as a proximate factor for the downward migration of D. pulicaria.  相似文献

Phenol degradation efficiency of cold-tolerant Arthrobacter sp. AG31 and mesophilic Pseudomonas putida DSM6414 was compared. The cold-tolerant strain was cultivated at 10°C, while the mesophile was grown at 25°C. Both strains degraded 200 mg and 400 mg phenol/l within 48–72 h of cultivation, but the cold-tolerant strain produced more biomass than the mesophile. Both strains oxidized catechol by the ortho type of ring fission. Catechol 1,2 dioxygenase (C1,2D) activity was found intra- and extracellularly in the absence and in the presence of phenol. In the presence of 200 mg phenol/l, C1,2D activity of the mesophile was about 1.5- to 2-fold higher than that of the cold-tolerant strain. However, an initial phenol concentration of 400 mg/l resulted in a comparable enzyme activity of the cold-tolerant and the mesophilic strain. The two strains differed significantly in their toxicity pattern towards 12 aromatic (mostly phenolic) compounds at different growth temperatures, which was determined via growth inhibition in the presence of nutrients and toxicants. For the cold-tolerant strain, toxicity was significantly lower at 10°C than at 25°C. The mesophile showed a significantly lower susceptibility to high hydrocarbon concentrations when grown at 25°C compared to 10°C.Communicated by K. Horikoshi  相似文献

Some results of studies with Daphnia magna are presented. These results can be used as background information for toxicologists, but the techniques referred to might well be used for toxicity tests. Daphnia magna is a filter-feeder. With the Coulter Counter it was shown that the feeding mechanism is aselective for size of the food particles. It was also shown that algal cells can pass the gut of Daphnia magna several times before being completely digested. The uptake of food is proportional to the food concentration up to a critical concentration. Above this concentration the food uptake is constant. Respiration is also dependent on the food concentration, and has a maximum value at food concentrations near the critical concentration of the feeding process. Growth efficiency is independent of the food concentration. The effect of temperature on the feeding process is different for low and high food concentrations. Growth efficiency is maximal at 10°C and above 22°C growth efficiency was negative, which means that the population cannot survive under the experimental conditions used, at temperatures above 22°C.  相似文献

Summary Daphnia parvula experiences a wide range of thermal (4°–30°C) and food conditions during its annual population cycle. We used cohort life table experiments to determine the synergistic effects of temperature and food concentration on its life history parameters. A 3×3 factorial design experiments was conducted with animals raised at all combinations of three naturally experienced temperatures (10°, 15° and 25° C) and food levels (0.02, 0.20 and 2.0 mg C/l). D. parvula showed an increase in survivorship with decreasing temperature at all food levels. Fecundity parameters (number of broods/female, brood size and net reproductive rate) increased with increasing food at the two lower temperatures but showed a mid-range food optimum at the highest temperature. Development rates and realized rates of increase (r) showed an increase with both increasing temperature and food such that they were maximum at the highest temperature-food level treatment. The life history parameters, average lifespan, age at first reproduction, brood duration time, brood size and number of young per reproductive female all showed significant interaction between temperature and food as was suggested by trends in R o and r. Temperature had a reduced effect on fecundity, development rates and realized rates of increase at the low food level.Population birth rates of continuously reproducing zooplankton are typically calculated by the egg-ratio method (Edmondson 1960) and are based on thermally controlled development rates which neglect the effects of food limitation. Significant synergistic temperature-food effects on brood duration time and other life history parameters of Daphnia parvula suggest that food limitation and foodtemperature interaction should be considered when calculating field population birth rates. A comparison of realized rates of increase from this study with similar life table data for Daphnia parvula raised on natural food from Lake Oglethorpe indicate that synergistic effects are negligible in this eutrophic system due to abundant resources. Summary The linear growth rates of fungal isolates were measured on agar plates at temperatures ranging from 4° to 35°C. Fungi tested included the major fungal colonizers of leaves and litter of the three dominant plant species on subantarctic Macquarie Island, and major fungal species associated with plant and soil communities near Australia's Casey Station on the Antarctic Continent. All fungi grew at 4°C and were classified as psychrotrophs. Maximum growth rates were recorded at temperatures of 10° to 20°C for 13 of the 15 isolates from Macquarie Island and for all six isolates from Casey. Most of the leaf colonizing fungi from Macquarie Island had optimum growth temperatures of 15°C whereas all litter fungi from Macquarie Island and Casey fungi except Thelebolus microsporus had optimum growth temperatures of 20°C or above. Maximum growth of all species was at temperatures above those normally prevailing in their natural environments, with most species growing at 4°C at between 10% and 30% of their maximum rates. However, microclimatic effects may have resulted at times in temperatures near their growth optima. The highest growth rates at 4°C were recorded for Phoma spp. 1 and 2, Phoma exigua and Mortierella gamsii from Macquarie Island and Mortierella sp. 1 from Casey. Thelebolus microsporus and sterile sp. G from Casey also grew relatively fast at 4°C, and these species, and Phoma sp. 3 and Phoma exigua from Macquarie Island had the lowest Q-10 values for the temperature range 4° to 15°C.  相似文献

The effects of daphniid crowding on juvenile growth rate, length at first reproduction, clutch size and egg size of four species of Daphnia were compared with the effects of food level. Juvenile Daphnia were grown to primipary in a flow-through system in water conditioned by different densities of the same, or another, species. At high ambient food levels, water from Daphnia that had been crowded at densities 150 l–1 depressed growth rate and lowered body size and clutch size of D. hyalina and D. galeata; effects on the same traits of D. magna and D. pulicaria were variable (stimulation, depression, or no effect). D. hyalina and D. galeata responded to gradients of increasing daphniid density (0–300 l–1) by altering egg mass, somatic mass and clutch size to maintain a relatively constant reproductive investment; egg mass increased with crowding and then decreased in a pattern consistent with Glazier's (1992) hypothetical model of changes in offspring size in relation to food quantity and maternal demand. Effects of crowding by conspecifics were indistinguishable from those of other species. This study, which uncouples the effect of crowding per se from ambient resource depletion, shows that chemical substances released by high densities of Daphnia can cause changes in life-history traits comparable to those that occur in response to low food levels.  相似文献

The relative importance of autotrophic flagellates, desmids, cyanobacteria, and ciliates as food forDaphnia magna was examined using cohort life tables. Each cohort was fed a single food type at a given concentration, and comparisons among each type were made. Algal feeding treatments included three levels of young (7 to 14 days old)Chlamydomonas reinhardi (Chlorophyta, Chlamydomonadacae), two levels of senescent (> 14 days old)C. reinhardi, two levels ofCryptomonas sp. (Chlorophyta, Cryptomonadacae), two levels ofStaurastrum sp. (Chlorophyta, Desmidacae), four levels of young (7 to 15 days old) or senescent (> 15 days old)Microcystis aeruginosa (Cyanophyta, Chlorococcacae), and a no-food treatment. The ciliatesCyclidium sp. andParamecium caudatum were also presented at concentrations of 1 or 102 cells/ml, as well as mixtures ofC. reinhardi (103/ml) andCyclidium (1/ml) orP. caudatum (1/ml).Daphnia growth, reproduction, and survivorship were highest whenC. reinhardi orCryptomonas were the food source, while those starved or fedM. aeruginosa had shorter survivorship and lower growth and reproduction.Daphnia grew and had high survivorship when fedP. caudatum, but even though eggs were produced, most were aborted after 2 or 3 days.Staurastrum andCyclidium produced intermediate growth and survivorship, but reproduction was seen only in the 103 Staurastrum/ml treatment. Carbon and nitrogen content were general indicators of nutritional value. However, growth, reproduction, and survivorship were higher in some cohorts fed treatments containing relatively low levels of carbon and nitrogen. Other cohorts were short-lived and did not reproduce, despite being fed much higher levels of carbon and nitrogen. The results also suggest that green algae are nutritionally valuable forDaphnia, whereas cyanobacteria are not. As measured by life-table parameters, the nutritional value of ciliates was variable, with some being poor food sources. Thus, the potential of ciliates as a trophic link between microbial production and higher trophic levels may vary with the ciliate community structure. Our results suggest that ciliates alone were insufficient as a food source to supportDaphnia population growth.  相似文献

Summary Growth and reproduction of twoDaphnia species (Cladocera) from Lake Constance were measured experimentally in a through-flow laboratory system under different food conditions, in order to investigate the effect of food quality on zooplankton populations. The cryptomonadRhodomonas sp. and the diatomStephanodiscus hantzschii were used as food. BothDaphnia species grew well at concentrations of 0.2–2.0 mgC/l ofRhodomonas sp., and 0.4–2.0 mgC/l ofS. hantzschii, whileStephanodiscus concentrations of 0.2 mgC/l did not supportDaphnia growth. Nitrogen content, which was very different in the two algae (C/N ratio = 4.9 forRhodomonas and 10.9 forS. hantzschii), was presumed to be the limiting factor. To test this hypothesis, nitrogen-limitedRhodomonas was offered to the cladocerans and their growth observed: the reduction in algal nitrogen content hindered animals' growth and reproduction.
