Diurnal activity rhythms of carrion beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) were investigated in the surroundings of Opava in the Czech Republic. Beetles were collected in automatic pitfall traps at two-hour catch intervals during three one-month periods in spring (May), summer (July) and autumn (October) in forest and meadow habitats. Five Nicrophorinae species: N. vespillo, N. vespilloides, N. humator, N. fossor and N. investigator and three Silphinae species: Thanatophilus sinuatus, T. rugosus and Oiceoptoma thoracica occurred in the study sites. T. sinuatus, T. rugosus and O. Thoracica showed exclusively diurnal activity patterns. N. fossor and N. investigator were active from the late afternoon to the nightfall. The other carrion beetles did not show a restricted pattern of diurnal activity. Patterns of temporal utilisation among species were compared using Levins¹ measure of niche breadth and Horn's index of niche overlap. Lower niche overlap was found between species with different habitat preference. During the autumn period niche release was observed, due to lesser competition for carrion with species that only need feeding before hibernation.  相似文献

Adults from two populations (Brazil and Florida) of Cyrtobagous salviniae were bioassayed to determine if they exhibited a preference for either Salvinia minima or Salvinia molesta. Adults did not discriminate between host species in initial tests that evaluated the tertiary growth form. Further tests which compared two growth forms (primary and tertiary) as well as plant species, found that adults from the Brazil population consistently preferred larger (tertiary) plants without regard for host species. Weevils from the Florida population showed a similar, but less distinct, pattern of preference. Although adults from the Florida population survived equally well and experienced a similar pre-oviposition period on both plant species, they laid more eggs in S. molesta. Adults from the two populations differ in size: Brazil weevils were larger, which may explain their sensitivity to plant size as compared with the smaller Florida adults. Narrower rhizomes in S. minima may restrict usage of this species by the larger weevils, whereas smaller larvae may be better able to burrow in a wider range of plant sizes. Both weevil populations should be suitable biological control agents for use in programs targeting S. molesta.  相似文献

The relationship between the mite Poecilochirus davydovae Hyatt and its burying beetle carrier ( Nicrophorus vespilloides ) was investigated. Beetles experimentally stripped of deuteronymphs of Poecilochirus had larger apparent clutch sizes than beetles carrying mites. Furthermore, apparent clutch sizes were not affected by the presence or absence of carrion flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae). These results support the hypothesis that P. davydovae is a specialist predator feeding on the eggs of N. vespiloides.  相似文献

The life history of three populations ofProtohermes grandis and two populations ofProtohermes immaculatus (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) was compared. In general, the larvae lived in stream riffles for 2 years and the adults appeared in summer. Adult body size differed between these closely related species and also between the populations ofP. grandis. Dwarfism occurred inP. immaculatus, a species that is endemic to the small, isolated island, Amami Island. The population ofP. grandis on Yaku Island, located between Amami Island and the mainland Kyushu, had an intermediate body size between that ofP. immaculatus and the mainland population ofP. grandis. Despite being an insular population,P. grandis on Tsushima Island had a similar body size to mainlandP. grandis. In these populations with large adults, some larvae lived in the streams for 3 years. The size distribution of benthic animals, which are the prey available toProtohermes larvae, differed between the streams studied. The density of large prey was lowest on Amami Island, intermediate on Yaku Island, and highest on the mainland and Tsushima Island. Different size distributions of available prey may be caused by the differences of benthic fauna; most of Ecdyonuridae and Ephemerellidae (large mayflies) and Perlidae (large stoneflies) were not found on Amami and Yaku Islands. Thus, there is a tendency to dwarfism in the populations ofProtobermes inhabiting streams where the density of large prey is low.

该种含2个变种:原变种景东报春(P.interjacens Chen var.interjacens),现存一个居群;和光叶景东报春(P.interjacens Chen var.epilosa C.M.Hu),有2个居群。

Canonical variate analysis (CVA) on morphological distance measurements shows that differences exist among adult samples of A. alneti taken from a number of host plant species in South Wales. This variation is also correlated with variation in the degree of yellow pigmentation. Adults taken from alder and hazel form extremes in a continuum of variation, those from alder being larger and more pigmented. The variation between these two populations is greater than host-independent variation among samples of each population taken from a number of individual trees at different localities in Britain in different years. Ordination shows that the variation between the alder and hazel populations is along different axes to that among samples in these populations. Different axes of variation are also found among adults from different pairs of host plant species. Multiple-group principal component analysis (MGPCA) suggests that much of the variation between adults from alder and hazel may be interpreted as allometry-free 'shape' that is uncorrelated with variation in overall size within each population. Transfer experiments showed that the differences in both size and shape may have little genetic basis and are probably host plant induced> The taxonomic and ecological implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Terrestrial flatworms, or Terricola, are sensitive to environmentalchanges and therefore might be excellent indicators of the conservation statusof natural habitats. The present study aimed to answer two main questions: (1)is terrestrial planarian diversity affected by human disturbances, and (2) isthere any species or group of species that indicates such disturbance? The studysite, National Forest of São Francisco de Paula, Brazil, was originallycovered by a mixed ombrophilous forest, but successive reforestations andselective logging have modified the original landscape. We studied Terricoladiversity in the four main habitats in the study area: mixed ombrophilous forest(NA), ombrophilous forest with selective Araucariaangustifolia logging (N), A. angustifoliareforestation (A), and reforestation of Pinus elliottii(P). According to an increasing degree of disturbance, the habitats might beordered as follows: (NA)<(N)<(A)<(P). We conducted 24 surveys in eachhabitat over a period of 1 year. Our results indicate that: (1)Terricola diversity is inversely related to the degree of habitat disturbance;(2) there are species (Geoplana franciscana,Geoplana sp. 5, and possibly Geoplanidae 3 andNotogynaphallia guaiana) that prefer habitats located onthe extreme right along the main axis of a detrended correspondence analysisordination and therefore can be considered as indicators of well preserved, natural habitats. On the other hand there are species(Xerapoa sp. 1, Choeradoplanaiheringi, G. marginata sensu Marcus andGeoplana sp. 2) preferring more disturbed habitats, whichmay form biological indicators of such disturbances.  相似文献

During a 15-month investigation of the population dynamics of three caridean shrimp species in the Lam Tsuen River, New Territories, Hong Kong, the numbers of the commonest species, Neocaridina serrata (Stimpson)(Atyidae), were reduced as water temperatures fell. By contrast, Caridina lanceifrons Yu became more numerous during the winter. The relatively scarce Macrobrachium hainanense (Parisi)(Palaemonidae) tended to be more abundant during the summer, and the abundance of this species was directly correlated with that of N. serrata. The population size of these two species was positively correlated with water temperatures prevailing one and two months prior to the collection of samples, but there was no significant relationship between C. lanceifrons abundance and water temperature. All species exhibited similar growth patterns with an inflection at the attainment of sexual maturity, occurring after the (presumed) 14th moult for N. serrata and in the (presumed) 13th and 18th stadium for C. lanceifrons and M. hainanensis respectively. Ovigerous shrimps of all species were only recorded when water temperatures exceeded 20 °C and the % incidence of ovigerous N. serrata was positively correlated with prevailing temperatures. It is suggested that restriction of freshwater caridean breeding periods by low temperatures may be common in the subtropics while perennial breeding is more likely to be typical of tropical regions. The mean carapace length of N. serrata populations was negatively correlated with prevailing temperatures, but more strongly correlated with temperatures recorded one and two months prior to sampling when gametogenesis may have taken place. Smallest mean sizes were recorded in late summer upon the cessation of juvenile recruitment. N. serrata has a maximum longevity of approximately 12 months and reproduction occurs in the 7th month of life or later. The hatchlings are well developed and clutch size is not related to the size of the brooding female. An annual life cycle, as seen in N. serrata, may be typical of many small freshwater carideans.Department of Zoology, The University of Hong Kong  相似文献

1. To examine the relationship between male–female emergence patterns and ejaculate dynamics, patterns producing sperm and seminal fluids in male internal reproductive organs, the size of a spermatophore transferred at mating and the fate of spermatophore contents moved into female storage organs were compared among the fishflies (Megaloptera: Corydalidae: Chauliodinae), Parachauliodes continentalis, P. japonicus and Neochauliodes sinensis .
2. Spermatophore contents moved into female storage organs decreased rapidly in P. japonicus and N. sinensis , but hardly at all in P. continentalis . This suggests that the females of the former two species may remate sooner than the latter species as it is known in insects that material remaining in the storage organs mechanically inhibits receptivity to mating.
3. Male P. japonicus and N. sinensis increased in internal reproductive organ mass continuously after adult eclosion, and the spermatophore size produced at the first mating increased with male age. In contrast, the internal reproductive organs of P. continentalis were relatively small and did not increase in mass after emergence. P. continentalis transferred a constantly smaller spermatophore at any copulation than the former two species.
4. Males of P. japonicus and N. sinensis emerged earlier than females, while P. continentalis showed a nearly simultaneous emergence pattern between the sexes. It seems that males of P. japonicus and N. sinensis (more polyandrous than P. continentalis ) inhibit female receptivity for a longer time period by emerging earlier and transferring larger ejaculates. In these two species, the number of sperm ejaculated at the first mating also increased with male age. The increase in sperm number by emerging earlier may be adaptive for the males owing to numerical sperm competition when the female remates.  相似文献

Aim The aim of this study was to analyse whether, and how, the inclusion of habitat specialists and edge‐preferring species modifies the species–area relationship predictions of the island biogeography theory for an insect group (ground beetles, Coloptera: Carabidae) living in natural fragments. Species–habitat island area relationships applied to terrestrial habitat islands can be distorted by the indiscriminate inclusion of all species occurring in the fragments. Matrices surrounding terrestrial habitat fragments can provide colonists that do not necessarily distinguish the fragment from the matrix and can survive and reproduce there. Edge‐preferring species can further distort the expected relationship, as smaller fragments have larger edge:core ratios. Location Nineteen forest fragments were studied in the Bereg Plain, Hungary, and SW Ukraine. This area contains natural forest patches, mainly of oak and hornbeam, and supports a mountain entomofauna. Methods Ground beetles (Carabidae) present in the 19 forest patches were categorized into generalists, forest specialists and edge‐preferring species. We analysed the relationship between species richness and fragment area using species richness in the different categories. Results The assemblages contained a high share of generalist species (species that occur also in the surrounding matrix). Forest patch size and the number of generalist species showed a marginally significant negative relationship, indicating that generalist species were more important in smaller patches. Forest specialist species richness was correlated positively with patch area. Edge‐preferring species were shown to influence the species–area relationship: the number of edge‐preferring species increased with the edge:area ratio. Main conclusions Both generalist and edge‐preferring species can considerably distort the species–area relationship. Island biogeography theory can be applied to habitat islands only if the habitat islands are defined correctly from the viewpoint of the target species.  相似文献

Abstract Adult body size, a key life history component, varies strongly within and between Heliconius erato phyllis (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) populations. In the present study, we determined whether seasonal variation in adult body size is temperature related and/or determined by seasonal changes of host plants (Passifloraceae) used by the larval stage. A population of H. erato phyllis located in a Eucalyptus plantation (Barba Negra Forest, Barra do Ribeiro County, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil) was sampled every 45 days from March 1997 to October 1998 to quantify seasonal variation in adult body size and use of larval host plants. In the laboratory, the effects of the following factors on adult body size were quantified: (i) host plant species (Passiflora misera or Passiflora suberosa); (ii) food quantity consumed by larvae (experimentally manipulated for each passion vine species); (iii) winter and summer temperatures (15 and 25°C, respectively); and (iv) the interaction between host plant species and temperature. Adults emerging during summer were larger than those emerging in other seasons. Female butterflies oviposited selectively on P. misera even when the dominant passion vine was P. suberosa. They only switched from using P. misera to P. suberosa during later autumn and winter, when P. misera vines were completely defoliated. The laboratory feeding trials with both passion vines showed a strong positive association between food quantity consumed by larvae and adult size. They also confirmed that adults are larger when their larvae are reared on P. misera than on P. suberosa. Temperature during larval development had no effect on H. erato phyllis adult size. Thus, seasonal variation of H. erato phyllis adult size in a given place is primarily determined by the availability and quality of host plant species used by the larval stage.  相似文献

Three populations of the rare and endangered plant species Cypripedium calceolus were included in a study of genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure in the Biebrza National Park, northeast Poland. Analysis of 11 allozyme loci indicate that the populations of this species contained high genetic variability (P = 45.5%, A= 1.73). On the other hand, the genetic differentiation (FST = 0.014, P < 0.05) among C. calceolus populations was very low when compared to other species with similar life history characteristics. The observed high rate of gene flow (Nm = 18) may suggest that the populations studied derived from each other in the recent past. Five polymorphic allozyme markers identified 109 multilocus genotypes in three populations and the majority of them (67%) were population-specific. One of the populations studied, characterized by particularly extensive vegetative reproduction, showed the lowest clonal diversity (G/N = 0.15) and heterozygosity (HO = 0.111) values and the highest FIS(0.380), when compared to other two populations (G/N = 0.26-0.27, HO= 0.166-178, FIS = 0.024-0.055). This may indicate that clonal reproduction has an important influence on the genetic structure of C. calceolus populations. The longevity of genets, the out-crossing breeding system and the presence of recruitment from seeds are factors maintaining genetic diversity in C. calceolus.  相似文献

Observational evidence is presented suggesting that the mite Poecilochirus davydovae Hyatt (Mesostigmata: Parasitidae) is predatory on the eggs of the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides Herbst and that an increase in numbers of the mite in the laboratory accounts for a reduction in apparent beetle clutch size over successive generations. Morphological adaptations for oophagy are described and physogastry is reported for the first time in the genus Poecilochirus. A new sub-genus Physoparasilus is proposed for the reception of P. davydovae and P. subterraneus and the female of P. davydovae is redescribed. The implications of the oophagous behaviour of P. davydovae on the mite-Nicrophorus relationship are discussed.  相似文献

Pleuroxus denticulatus Birge, 1879 is a new invader from Western to Central Europe. Its occurrence in a Danube inundation (Slovak region) probably corresponds with the junction of the Danube and Rhine Rivers. The species was found among ‘the hard macrophytes’ of flowing arms and artificial ponds. A large variability was recorded in the number of valval denticles and in postabdominal denticulation. It is evident that part of the N. American populations is different from European populations. P. denticulatus seems to represent two sibling species. Both are characterised by an angular distal postabdominal corner, bearing 3–4 denticles, and by valval denticles on the postero-ventral corner. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We studied allozyme and chloroplast (cp) DNA variation in natural populations of Pinus kesiya and P. merkusii from Thailand and Vietnam. The results showed striking differences between the two species in the amount and distribution of allozyme variation. P. kesiya harboured considerable allozyme variation and showed weak interpopulational differentiation. In contrast, P. merkmii had very low intrapopulational variability but a high level of interpopulational differentiation. The average Nei's genetic distance separating the two species was exceptionally high (0.701) taking into account their close taxonomic placement in the same subsection Sylvestres. The constructed phylogenetic trees revealed very early divergence of P. kesiya and P. merkusii. The present analysis of cpDNA variation also confirmed the dissimilar character of these two species and was compatible with other evidence indicating the outstanding position of P. merkusii as compared to other Asian members of the subsection Sylvestres. Analysis of cpDNA variation in sympatric populations of P. kesiya and P. merkusii revealed that they are pure representatives of the species in question. This result indicates that despite an overlapping distribution P. kesiya and P. merkusii do not hybridise in nature. We suggest that the distinctive character of P. merkusii is a result of an early separation from other Eurasian pines. Despite spatial proximity, P. kesiya and P. merkusii are kept apart by strong reproductive barriers. The low genetic variability of P. merkusii may be explained by previous bottlenecks, reduced gene flow among populations, and an inbreeding due to small population size and asynchronous flowering.  相似文献

Vulnerable Kaiser''s mountain newt, Neurergus kaiseri, is endemic to highland streams, springs, and pools of the southwestern Zagros mountain, Iran. The present study aimed to use an integration of phylogeographical and species distribution modeling (SDM) approaches to provide new insights into the evolutionary history of the species throughout Quaternary climate oscillations. The phylogeographical analysis was followed by analyzing two mitochondrial DNA (mt‐DNA) markers including 127 control region (D‐loop) and 72 NADH dehydrogenase 2 (ND2) sequences from 15 populations in the entire species range that were obtained from GenBank. Potential recent and past distribution (the Last Glacial Maximum, LGM, 21 Kya and the Mid‐Holocene, 6 Kya) reconstructed by ensemble SDM using nine algorithms with CCSM4, MIROC‐ESM, and MPI‐ESM‐P models. Nkaiseri displayed two distinct lineages in the northern and southern regions that diverged in the Early‐Pleistocene. The demographics analysis showed signs of a slight increase in effective population size for both northern and southern populations in the Mid‐Pleistocene. Biogeography analysis showed that both vicariance and dispersal events played an important role in the formation of recent species distribution of N. kaiseri. Based on SDM projection onto paleoclimatic data, N. kaiseri displayed a scenario of past range expansion that followed by postglacial contraction. The models showed that the distribution range of the species may have shifted to a lower altitude during LGM while with amelioration of climatic during Mid‐Holocene to recent conditions caused the species to shift to the higher altitude. The findings of the current study support the hypothesis that the Zagros mountains may be acting as climatic refugia and play an important role in the protection of isolated populations during climate oscillations.  相似文献

We pitfall-trapped carabid beetles across an urban-rural gradient in central Alberta, Canada to assess the relative contributions of landscape structure and habitat quality in explaining variation in composition of assemblages. The gradient ranged from the "urban" zone in the city of Edmonton, through a "suburban" zone just outside the city, into a "rural" zone 25–60 km east of the city. We trapped beetles at three replicated sites for each of two habitats (unmanaged grasslands and highly managed graveyards) in each of the three zones. Most of the 24 species (3162 individuals) captured were commonly associated with open habitats. Pterostichus melanarius , an introduced species, made up 80% of the total catch. Carabid assemblages of grasslands and graveyards were distinct, with lower species richness and lower catch rates of native, introduced and brachypterous carabids in graveyards. Graveyard assemblages also had proportionally fewer brachypterous carabid individuals (32 vs 52%) and species (20 vs 36%), suggesting that populations recruit locally from elsewhere after disturbances. Native carabids were least abundant in the urban areas. Brachypterous carabids were similarly abundant across the gradient, but more occurred in the urban zone than elsewhere (32 vs 5–10%). Samples from graveyards were characterized by lower beta diversity (variation among samples) than those from grasslands, but beta diversity was more-or-less equally variable across the gradient within habitats. The amount of unmanaged grassland habitat and the degree of urbanization significantly influence carabid assemblages, and therefore are relevant to management and conservation of urban grassland areas.  相似文献

Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) is a natural enemy of pest mites used worldwide in many crops. Its correct identification is thus essential to ensure biological control success. The present study aimed to characterize molecular and morphological intraspecific variations for assisting in the diagnosis of the species and to build baseline information about expected variations within a commercially important phytoseiid species. Morphological and molecular [12S rRNA, cytochrome b mitochondrial (mt)DNA, and internal transcribed spacer] analyses were carried out on fourteen populations collected worldwide and on one mass‐reared strain. The genetic distances between the specimens of N. californicus and another related species were high and no overlap was observed, sustaining the reliability of such molecular methods for assisting a specific diagnosis. Furthermore, the genetic distances between populations of N. californicus were very low and overlap between intra‐ and interpopulations distances was observed, except for two populations collected in France (Marsillargues and Midi‐Pyrénées). The high mitochondrial differentiation between these two latter populations and the others questions their specific status: do they belong to the species N. californicus or to another cryptic species? However, using nuclear DNA marker analyses, no distinct differences were observed. Furthermore, even if significant morphological differences were observed between the populations, these differences were very small and the standard errors within each population were very low. We thus concluded that all the populations studied belong to the species N. californicus, despite unexpected high mitochondrial variations. The present study thus displays the importance of an integrative taxonomic approach for avoiding misidentifications. A discussion on morphological and mtDNA variations in relation to diagnostic reliability is developped. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 393–406.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Naidids live in a wide range of aquatic habitats but are particularly important numerically as part of the benthic fauna of rivers with stony substrates. In general they graze on bacteria and algae although some, particularly Chaetogaster spp., are mainly predaceous, and C. limnaei vaghini is a parasite of molluscs, chiefly Gastropoda. Food selection seems to be based largely on particle size although the food quality of the particles within the appropriate size-range influences rates of growth and reproduction. Major factors determining the distribution and abundance of naidid species are the nature of the substratum and the presence and kind of vegetation. Plants with a highly dissected form, a thick growth habit, and which permit the greatest periphyton development generally support the most abundant naidid populations. The oligochaete fauna of coarse substrates (stones and gravels) is often dominated by the Naididae but both species-richness and abundance of naidid populations are generally reduced where fine substrates (silts and muds) occur. The occurrence of worms within the substratum is also determined by its nature; naidids penetrate to depths of 20–70 cm in coarse substrates but rarely penetrate below 6 cm in mud. The principal factor limiting both depth penetration and the dominance of naidids in fine substrates is probably oxygen availability. Naidids reproduce both asexually and sexually, the former method predominating for most of the year. Asexual reproduction usually involves the budding-off of zooids but a few species fragment. Sexual reproduction is often infrequent; populations of some species produce few or no sexually mature individuals. In mature worms asexual reproduction virtually ceases. In populations that produce mature individuals there is apparently one sexual generation a year, usually occurring during the summer and autumn. Adults die soon after laying their cocoons. In general, naidids are most abundant during the summer months when rates of growth and asexual reproduction are stimulated by higher temperatures and a plentiful supply of food. A few species, however, e.g. Nais elinguis and Paranais litoralis, are more abundant in the spring. The response of naidid species to different kinds of pollution is varied but generally organic enrichment of rivers which have stony substrates results in a considerable (ten- to twenty-fold) increase in naidid abundance. Nais elinguis, N. barbata, N. communis, N. variabilis, and Chaetogaster diaphanus are often abundant in such rivers, the foremost species reaching densities of 200 000 m?2. Nais alpina, N. bretscheri, and N. pardalis appear to be relatively intolerant of organic enrichment. A substantial increase in naidid abundance is also promoted by the deposition of biologically inert particles (coal dust, china clay, sand) on the river bed. The importance of Naididae in relation to pollution surveillance of fresh waters is discussed.  相似文献
