The life-histories of red roach were assessed in the R. Moros and the R. Ucero, two contrasting tributaries of the R. Duero. Growth occurred from April to October and Ucero red roach were larger than those in the Moros from their second year onwards. Condition increased with gonad development and abruptly decreased after spawning in both populations. The condition of Ucero fish recovered during the summer, but that of the Moros fish remained low. The same year classes (1980 and 1982) dominated both populations. River Moros red roach spawned in a 4-week period between the end of April and early June, while the spawning season of Ucero red roach lasted until August. The length to fecundity relationship was similar for both populations, and fecundity and ovum size increased with fish length. The life-history traits of these red roach populations are discussed in relation to current life-history theories.  相似文献

The roach, Rutilus rutilus , is normally a dioecius species. During an experimental study of reproduction in this species, a condition of apparently functional intersex was discovered. Anatomically the gonad was a testis, exhibiting various normal stages of spermatogenesis. A group of oocytes was found during the microscopical examination of the gonad, interspersed between lobules of normal testicular tissue. A few small oocytes were found to be in the chromatin-nucleolus stage, while the rest were in the perinucleolus stage. In addition, some large oocytes with an average diameter of 40 μm were randomly distributed among the lobules of the testis.  相似文献

Genetic variation at five microsatellite loci and in mtDNA was surveyed in reintroduced and 'control' populations of roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) in Sweden. Microsatellite allelic richness and allele size ranges were significantly reduced in reintroduced populations, and mtDNA diversity was nearly significantly reduced in reintroduced populations. These measures of genetic variability were strongly correlated with lake characteristics that influence population size and food availability.  相似文献

Summary Nutrient requirements of adult, nonreproductive, omnivorous antelope ground squirrels (Ammospermophilus leucurus) were compared with the nutritional value of their food resources. It was found that nutrient constraints would be important factors in ground squirrel feeding ecology primarily in winter. Potentially important constraints were the requirement for water and nitrogen, and a digestive requirement that average dry matter digestibility of the diet exceed ca. 50%. An unlikely constraint was the requirement for any specific mineral. A linear programming model was used to determine potential diets ground squirrels could consume which satisfied these nutritional requirements and also the ground squirrel's daily energy requirements. During spring ground squirrels could be strict herbivores, but during winter before winter rains ground squirrels had to eat some arthropods to satisfy water requirements.These ground squirrels are not energy maximizers because they spend only one third of their activity period feeding and do not accumulate excess energy as fat. Thus, optimum diets were predicted for winter and spring assuming the goal of feeding time minimization. The model correctly predicted that in wintertime ground squirrels would be primarily granivorous but would consume about 20% arthropods, and that they would switch to herbivory in springtime. Ground squirrels, however, selected a wider dietary range than predicted in both winter and spring. Possible reasons for this discrepancy include an inappropriate assumption that ground squirrels forage for food classes nonsimultaneously, and the possibility that ground squirrels employ sampling as part of their foraging behavior.  相似文献

To analyse a recruitment failure in a roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) population exposed to cooling water from a Swedish nuclear power plant, histopathological examinations were made on female gonads. Several disorders were documented, corresponding to effects previously seen in Lithuanian, Moldavian and Russian heated waters, The relative gonad size (GSI) was generally lower in the exposed population. Oocyte degeneration was observed in about 50% of the females, potentially seriously reducing their reproductive capacity. The gameto- and gonadogeneses also were clearly affected and generally occurred at a faster rate. Sexual maturity was earlier and was accompanied by an increased occurrence of asynchionic gonad and oocyte growth. A normal gonad development should pass through different stages, coupled to the seasons, and the difference between individuals in a population should be small. However, in some exposed fish, the sequence of seasonal development was disturbed and a simultaneous, intensive, growth of sex cells in different stages of development could be seen. An increase of variation in gonad development both within, as well as between, fish thus was documented. Conclusively, the histopathological analysis provided evidence that the observed recruitment deficit could be related to gonad failure.  相似文献

Co-existence among potentially competing species can be favoured by niche specialisation and/or by reducing the overall intensity of competition via aggregated utilisation of fragmented resources. We investigated the respective roles of niche specialisation and aggregation in the case of nine congeneric monogenean parasites on the gills of Roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) belonging to the genus Dactylogyrus. The position of each individual parasite of the nine Dactylogyrus species was recorded. Niche breadth and niche overlap of parasite species were estimated. Comparative methods, which take into account phylogenetic information of the analysed species, were used. We reconstructed a phylogeny of the nine Dactylogyrus species based on morphological characters. We used the 'aggregation model of co-existence' in the model to test if species co-existence is facilitated when intraspecific aggregation exceeds interspecific aggregation. We observed a lack of negative correlation in abundance between pairs of parasites, and a negative correlation between niche size and parasite aggregation, for both intraspecific and interspecific aggregation. Our comparative analysis showed that parasite abundance is positively correlated with niche breadth. Then parasite abundance, and not interactions between Dactylogyrus species, seems to be the most important factor determining niche size This result gives some support to niche segregation by specialisation. Niche size was negatively correlated with both intraspecific and interspecific aggregation. No relationship was found between an increase of interspecific aggregation with an increase of niche overlapping, which suggests that competition may play little role. A lack of competition could be also confirmed by the lack of negative correlation in abundance between species pairs. A parsimony analysis of the evolution of gill distribution indicates a change in one parameter of the niche (arch, segment and/or area) at each branching event.  相似文献

Intraspecific differentiation in response to divergent natural selection between environments is a common phenomenon in some northern freshwater fishes, especially salmonids and stickleback. Understanding why these taxa diversify and undergo adaptive radiations while most other fish species in the same environments do not, remains an open question. The possibility for intraspecific diversification has rarely been evaluated for most northern freshwater fish species. Here, we assess the potential for intraspecific differentiation between and within lake populations of roach (Rutilus rutilus)—a widespread and abundant cyprinid species—in lakes in which salmonids have evolved endemic adaptive radiations. Based on more than 3,000 polymorphic RADseq markers, we detected low but significant genetic differentiation between roach populations of two ultraoligotrophic lakes and between these and populations from other lakes. This, together with differentiation in head morphology and stable isotope signatures, suggests evolutionary and ecological differentiation among some of our studied populations. Next, we tested for intralacustrine diversification of roach within Lake Brienz, the most pristine lake surveyed in this study. We found significant phenotypic evidence for ecological intralacustrine differentiation between roach caught over a muddy substrate and those caught over a rocky substrate. However, evidence for intralacustrine genetic differentiation is at best subtle and phenotypic changes may therefore be mostly plastic. Overall, our findings suggest roach can differ between ecologically distinct lakes, but the extent of intralacustrine ecological differentiation is weak, which contrasts with the strong differentiation among endemic species of whitefish in the same lakes.  相似文献

The tolerance to freezing and thawing of Leucodon sciuroides, a moss growing in mountainous areas of the Mediterranean (south-east Spain), was investigated by means of CO2 gas exchange, modulated chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and pigment analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography. Evidence is presented for freezing-induced decreases in CO2 fixation that enhance non-radiative dissipation of absorbed light energy, a process which protects the photosynthetic apparatus. The photosynthetic apparatus of L. sciuroides remained fully recuperable after freezing, as indicated by the recovery of photosynthetic CO2 fixation and Chl fluorescence parameters to pre-freezing values during thawing. The rapid recovery of photosynthesis activity during thawing in L. sciuroides suggests that this moss is capable of tolerating freeze-thaw cycles in a manner similar to that found at higher latitudes or in the Antarctic. The resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus of this moss to freezing might be achieved, at least partially, through the employment of dissipative pathways, such as non-radiative dissipation of absorbed light energy. The occurrence of hybrids between chub, Leuciscus cephalus , and roach, Rutilus rutilus , from three rivers in England is reported. The hybrids are described and illustrated, and means of identification are indicated. Chub X roach hybrids, like those between other leuciscine cyprinid species, can be positively identified by the number and form of the pharyngeal teeth.  相似文献

Introduced suckermouth catfishes (Family Loricariidae) are now established in a number of spring-influenced streams in North America but their impacts on native biota are not well documented. Purposes of this study were to quantify gut contents of the loricariid Hypostomus plecostomus from the San Marcos River in central Texas and to evaluate the role of H. plecostomus in the San Marcos River food web using stable isotope analysis. Gut content analysis indicated that H. plecostomus (N = 36) primarily consumed amorphous detritus (87% in biovolume), filamentous red algae (5.4%), and picoplankton (4.1%). Macrophytes, macroinvertebrates, and fish eggs were not found in gut contents. Stable isotopes demonstrate that H. plecostomus occupies a trophic position indicative of an herbivore and likely utilizes detritus of algal origin. The results from our study suggest that large populations of H. plecostomus in the San Marcos River may directly compete with several native herbivorous fishes and may be disrupting trophic flows and nutrient cycling in spring-influenced streams of central and west Texas.  相似文献

Remote effects of separate and combined exposure to copper (0.001 mg/L and 0.01 mg/L) and a low-frequency magnetic field during early embryogenesis in roach (Rutilus rutilus) underyearlings were studied. The study revealed that exposures lead to changes in the linear and weight parameters, activity of glycosidases, and kinetic characteristics of carbohydrates hydrolysis in the fish intestine. Copper decreases the activity of glycosidases and modifies the effect of a magnetic field. The exposure-induced decrease in the value of the seeming Michaelis constant of carbohydrate hydrolysis indicates the increase in the enzyme-substrate affinity. This phenomenon may be attributed to the adaptive reactions in response to negative effects of copper and a magnetic field during early ontogenesis in roach.  相似文献

A series of nettings for roach in Chew Valley Lake carried out by members of the Zoology Department, Bristol University, has revealed a marked decline in the population between 1965 and 1968. Fish from the main Lake were found to be heavily parasitized with Ligula intestinalis (L.) while those from the inflow pool (Herriott's Pool) were practically free from infection. It is considered that the decline of the roach can be linked to the incidence of Ligula , but that clean fish from the inflow pool may provide breeding stock and maintain the production of fry, which serve as food for the trout.  相似文献

The young roach Rutilus rutilus (L.) (Cyprinidae) displays lateralized behavior when facing a barrier through which a simulated bigger fish was visible. The asymmetry consists in a significant tendency to detour a barrier rightwards in the presence of a dummy fish. However, asymmetry is insignificant without the model. A comparison with the available literature shows that the roach has the same direction of this lateral bias as some other shoaling cyprinid fishes, which also preferentially turn to the right in the presence of a dummy fish. This seems to be a characteristic of cyprinids, as opposed to species of some other families displaying a leftward bias or a lack of asymmetry. The results of the study testify to the hypothesis that behavioral lateralization is associated with the taxonomic status of fishes. Currently, it is unclear whether the asymmetry found in roach in a detour test is due to the preferential use of the lateral fields of the right and left eyes as in some other fishes, or if it is a result of motor lateralization, which becomes evident in the presence of an unfamiliar and potentially dangerous object.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate compensatory growth in juvenile Rutilus caspicus during starvation and re‐feeding periods. The results confirmed the existence of compensatory growth in R. caspicus which depended on the duration of food deprivation. Complete compensatory growth occurred in the fish that were food deprived for at least 3 weeks. Starvation and re‐feeding had no significant effect on the digestive somatic index and intestinal surface areas in the fish that were food deprived for 1 week, while they showed a significant decrease and increase, during starvation and re‐feeding in the fish that were food deprived for 2 and 3 weeks. This knowledge may have application in aquaculture, as appropriate exploitation of compensatory growth can give increased growth rate and feeding efficiency.  相似文献
