Trivers and Willard (1973) predicted that stressed adult female mammals may enhance their fitness by skewing offspring sex ratios and maternal investment to favor daughters. The present study investigated whether stressing young hamsters might also influence sex ratio and growth of subsequent offspring. Control females received food ad libitum (A) on Days 1-50 postpartum (AA). Experimental females were food-restricted (R) either on Days 1-25 (RA), Days 26-50 (AR), or Days 1-50 (RR) postpartum. Subjects were mated when 91-95 days old. Litter sizes and survivorship (= % litters within a treatment that contained at least one pup), sex ratio (= % males), and pup weights in the next generation were recorded every fifth day from parturition until Day 25 postpartum. Control litters contained significantly more offspring at birth than did RR litters. Sex ratio was significantly higher at birth for AA litters than for the other treatments. Postpartum sex ratio within each group remained similar to that recorded at birth. RR litters contained significantly fewer pups compared to the other three treatments from Days 5-25. RR female pups weighed significantly more at birth than their counterparts in the other treatments. Weights of males at birth were similar in all treatments. By Day 25, both male and female RR pups weighed significantly less than control, AR, and RA pups. Food restriction early in life may have long-term consequences on sex ratio and pup growth in golden hamsters.  相似文献

The effects on aggressive behavior of prolactin (PRL) and ergocornine hydrogen maleate, an inhibitor of PRL secretion, were investigated in the female golden hamster. Because high aggression and PRL levels are associated with lactation in hamsters, postpartum females were used as subjects. In the first experiment, three groups of ovariectomized and hysterectomized females were compared: normally lactating, ergocornine-treated, and ergocornine plus replacement PRL treated. Normally lactating mothers were typically aggressive towards males in an arena, whereas females given ergocornine were not. Females given both ergocornine and PRL showed an intermediate level of aggression. Although ergocornine suppressed aggression towards adult males, attacks on pups increased. A second experiment sought to determine if ergocornine would depress aggression when PRL involvement was unlikely. At least 30 days following pup removal, females from the first experiment were “trained” to attack home-cage intruders consistently. After ergocornine administration, home-cage attacks by these experienced females were not diminished. Since PRL levels were probably low in these animals, it was concluded that the effects of ergocornine on aggression were limited to instances in which PRL was involved, and that PRL probably can facilitate aggression.  相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that female house mice (F1 generation of wild caught Mus domesticus) should preferentially invest in own offspring if confronted with young of different degrees of relatedness. The maternal behaviour of females with litters of 4 own and 4 unrelated alien young (cross-fostered at day 1 of lactation) was analysed during a lactation period of 22 days both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding (food was restricted by 20%). Cross-fostering and restricted feeding had no effect on the amount of time spent nursing until weaning. Under both feeding conditions the females did not differ in their maternal behaviour towards own and alien young: there were no significant differences either in the amount of time spent nursing own versus alien pups or in the time spent licking own versus alien young. Weight gain of own and alien = wild littermates did not differ significantly in mixed litters and was similar both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding. Such indiscriminate behaviour might be adaptive if female house mice prefer to communally nest with a relative and thus improve their inclusive fitness by investing in own and related offspring in a communal nest. Under moderate restricted feeding females could not wean the entire litter but reduced litter size by cannibalizing on average 2.7 pups (75% of the pups were killed when they were 4–8 days old). Females with cross-fostered litters killed as many own as alien young. This suggests that females cannot discriminate between own and unrelated young if cross-fostering takes place at day 1 of lactation. Besides testing kin recognition abilities, the experiments also allow analysis of the weaning strategy of females under food shortage. Under restricted feeding, body weight of the females was significantly lower during middle lactation than under ad libitum feeding. Weaning weight of young in reduced litters under food restriction (9–10 g) did not differ significantly from weaning weight of young in litters of 7–10 young, but was lower than that of young in similar sized litters (litter size 6), under ad libitum feeding. The maternal behaviour of cannibalizing some young under food shortage can be interpreted as a weaning strategy which results in the largest number of offspring that can be raised to a minimal weaning weight of 9–10 g. Such a weaning strategy might represent a favourable trade-off between number and size of young produced.  相似文献

Efficiency in laboratory mouse breeding is hampered by poor reproductive performance, including the loss of entire litters shortly after birth. However, the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood and establishing the cause of death in laboratory mouse pups can be complicated. Newborn mouse pups are generally hidden in nests, dead pups are often eaten by the female, and the widespread practice of leaving periparturient females undisturbed complicates inspection, which may delay the discovery of pup loss. In order to efficiently prevent problems with litter loss, it is important to find key factors for survival. We investigated differences in periparturient behavior between female laboratory mice whose pups survived until weaning and females whose entire litters were lost. Video recordings of 82 primiparous females of the C57BL/6 strain or knockouts with C57BL/6 background were used. The mice were observed from 24 h before until 24 h after parturition and female behaviors coded using a pre-established ethogram. The relationship between behavior and survival was analyzed using logistic models, where litter survival was regressed on the proportion of 30-s observations with at least one occurrence of the behavior. We found that females with surviving litters performed more nest building behavior during the last 24 h before parturition (p = 0.004) and spent less time outside the nest during the entire observation period (p = 0.001). Increased litter survival was also associated with more passive maternal behaviors and the female ignoring still pups less. Females that lost their litters performed more parturition-related behaviors, suggesting prolonged labor. The results indicate that maternal behavior plays a significant role in laboratory mouse pup survival. Complications at parturition also contribute to litter mortality.  相似文献

The onset of maternal behavior in pregnant hamsters was measured by presenting foster pups at 0900 and 2100 hr on Day 15 and at 0300, 0500, and 0700 hr on Day 16 and then at hourly intervals until parturition began. The occurrence of parturition was determined at each maternal test and at 0.5 hr intervals beginning at 0700 hr on Day 16. Nulliparous and primiparous animals became maternal at approximately the same time on Day 16, 2 and 6 hr prepartum, respectively, demonstrating that parturition is not essential for maternal behavior. The second experiment showed that nulliparous females injected with either 1 μg or 10 μgm estradiol-17β (E2), 0.1 mgm progesterone (P), 10 μgm E2 plus 0.1 mgm P, or oil at 1200 hr on Day 15 became maternal at the same time of day (0800–1000 hr) while parturition was delayed 8 hr in females receiving P. The results suggest a dissociation between the regulation of parturition and maternal care and are compared to previous research into the hormonal basis of maternal behavior in rats.  相似文献

The relationship between prolactin (PRL) secretion and anovulation in lactating rats was studied. Normal lactating rats and lactating rats treated with antiserum against luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone at the time of postpartal ovulation were used. Normal lactating rats were treated with either a dopamine agonist (CB-154, 150 micrograms/rat) on Day 10 or 13, or pups removal on Day 7 or 10, and thereafter luteolysis and inhibition on PRL secretion were assessed. With the CB-154 treatment, the incidence of luteolysis increased as the lactational period advanced (42% vs 72%), whereas it decreased (73% vs 14%) with the pups removal. Thus, dopamine effectively inhibited PRL secretion during the later lactational stage, but could not do so during the earlier stage when there were mechanisms other than dopamine stimulating PRL secretion. Following luteal regression induced by CB-154, ovulation did not occur if the rats were treated with CB-154 on Day 10, whereas 50% of the rats ovulated within 4 days if treated on Day 13. Furthermore, in the lactating rats treated with anti-luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone serum during late pregnancy, ovulation was not observed until Day 10 of lactation. Since the serum progesterone levels were low in these rats due to the absence of ovulation and lactational corpora lutea, the blockade of ovulation was not due to elevated circulating progesterone during the early lactational period. The mechanism of ovulation blockade during lactation thus seems to shift from being progesterone independent to progesterone dependent at a similar period when the neuroendocrine control of PRL secretion shifts from dopamine independent to dependent.  相似文献

The role of pups' appetite in the regulation of maternal consummatory behavior (food intake of nursing mothers), lactational performance and postpartum diestrus was studied over a period of 45 days postpartum in rats chronically exposed to either underfed or normally fed pups. Experimental rats (n = 10) daily received 5 pups, 4-10-days-old, that had been deprived of food for the preceding 24 h while under the care of nonlactating foster mothers. Control rats (n = 10) received normally fed pups obtained daily from lactating foster mothers. Throughout the experimental period, the daily milk yield (estimated by litter weight gain), the intake of food and water by the mother, as well as the ratio of litter weight gain to mother's intake of food and water were all markedly higher in rats nursing underfed pups than in rats nursing normally fed pups. After a peak in lactation around Day 15 postpartum, experimental rats produced the same amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in the beginning of lactation, while control rats produced only half the amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in early lactation. Regardless of the nutritional state of the suckling pups, maternal body weight increased progressively over the first four weeks of lactation and remained unchanged during the time of extended lactation. The postpartum diestrus and the subsequent diestrous phase in the time of extended lactation were considerably longer in duration in rats that nursed underfed pups. On Day 45 of lactation, prolactin levels were higher and the adrenal glands were larger in experimental rats than in controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Lactation in rabbits induces anestrus: sexual receptivity and scent-marking (chinning) are reduced despite the brevity of suckling (one daily nursing bout, lasting around 3 min). The mechanisms underlying this effect are unknown but, as chinning, lordosis, and ambulation in an open field are immediately inhibited by the peripheral stimulation received during mating we hypothesized that, across lactation, suckling stimulation would provoke a similar effect. To test this possibility we provided litters of 1, 3, 5, or 10 pups across lactation days 1-15 and quantified chinning and ambulation frequencies, the lordosis quotient, and milk output. Baseline chinning frequency, determined before the daily nursing bout, was low across lactation days 1-15 in does nursing 3, 5 or 10 pups but it increased steadily across days 1-10 in rabbits suckling one pup. Yet, a single young was sufficient to abolish chinning for about 1h, after which this behavior rose again. Suckling litters of all sizes reduced (but did not abolish) ambulation frequency, both chronically (baseline levels declined across days 1-5) and acutely. Sexual receptivity was significantly reduced on lactation day 15 only in does that had nursed 10 pups. Large litter size promoted a larger milk output and a normal duration of nursing episodes. Results support a major role of suckling stimulation for the suppression of estrous behaviors and ambulation through as yet unidentified mechanisms.  相似文献

Pup survival and growth rates were monitored to determine whether paternal care potentially contributes to reproductive success of male common voles Microtus arvalis Pallas, 1779. The subjects were 258 pups from 47 litters obtained from adult voles trapped in the wild. Reproducing pairs were formed and divided onto two groups in accordance with the age and parental experience of the reproducing individuals: group I included pairs with subadult males and nulliparous females; group II included pairs with adult males and multiparous females. Each of the groups was divided into two subgroups: in subgroups Iа (n = 13) and IIа (n= 11), litters were raised by females without sires; in subgroups Ib (n = 12) and IIb (n = 11), litters were raised by both parents. The litter size was recorded at parturition and again when the young were 12, 21, and 30 days old. Pups in each litter were weighed at parturition and also again when the young were 12, 21, and 30 days old. This study has shown that the presence of the sire may negatively affect both survival and growth rates of the pups, but this effect is dependent on the age of the reproducing individuals.  相似文献

The role of nipple stimulation in the suppression of the estrous cycle during extended lactation was studied in rats subjected to either total, partial, or sham excision of the nipples. Each female cohabited with 4 pups, 4-14 days old, over a period of 70 days postpartum, during which vaginal smears were recorded daily. Initially, regardless of the presence of nipples, all rats exhibited a postpartum diestrus that lasted for 12-20 days. Intact females (bearing 6 pairs of nipples) continued to exhibit successive prolonged diestrous phases over 70 days of lactation. A comparable result was obtained with females bearing only the anterior pair of nipples, which, in a separate experiment, was found to be the most frequently suckled pair. However, females devoid of nipples resumed regular (4-day) estrous cycles between Days 12 and 27 postpartum, in spite of their continuous contact with pups. Thus, when lactation is prolonged beyond the normal time of weaning (Day 21 postpartum), stimulation of the nipples by sucking becomes indispensable for the continued arrest of the estrous cycle. The possible mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are discussed.  相似文献

To evaluate how rearing programmes could affect resources allocation and reproductive performance of primiparous rabbit females, a total of 118 rabbit females were used to evaluate the effects of five rearing feeding programmes on their performance from 1st to 2nd parturition: CAL, fed ad libitum C diet (11.0 MJ digestible energy (DE), 114 g digestible protein (DP) and 358 g NDF/kg dry matter (DM) until 1st parturition; CR, fed ad libitum with C diet until 12 weeks of age and then C diet restricted (140 g/day) until 1st parturition; F, fed ad libitum with F diet (8.7 MJ DE, 88 g DP and 476 NDF/kg DM) until 1st parturition; FC, fed with F diet ad libitum until 16 weeks of age, and C diet ad libitum until 1st parturition; FCF, fed with F diet ad libitum until 16 weeks of age, then C diet ad libitum until 20 weeks and then F diet ad libitum until 1st parturition. From 1st parturition, C diet was ad libitum offered to all the experimental groups until 2nd parturition. CAL females presented lower feed intake than females of F, FC and FCF groups in the 1st week of lactation (on av. −16.6%; P<0.05). During 1st lactation, the perirenal fat thickness change in CAL females was not different from 0 (+0.02 mm), while in the other four groups it increased (on av. +0.44 mm; P<0.05). Plasma of females fed with F diet during rearing (F, FC and FCF) had lower non-esterified fatty acids content than those exclusively fed with C diet (–0.088 and –0.072 mmol/l compared to CAL and CR, respectively; P<0.05). FCF litters had higher weight than F litters at day 21 of lactation (+247 g; P<0.05), but FCF litter had significantly lower weight than FC litters at weaning (+170 g; P<0.05). CR females had the shortest average interval between the 1st and 2nd parturition (49 days) and FCF females the longest (+ 9 days compared to CR; P<0.05). At 2nd parturition, liveborn litters of F females were larger and heavier than litters of FCF females (+2.22 kits and +138 g; P<0.05), probably due to the lower mortality at birth of F litters (–16.5 percentage points; P<0.05). In conclusion, rearing females on fibrous diets seems to increase the ability of primiparous rabbit females to obtain resources, especially at the onset of lactation.  相似文献

Effects of food restriction on the length of lactational diestrus in rats   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The effect of food restriction (60% of an ad lib ration) for the first 14 days postpartum on serum progesterone levels and the duration of lactational diestrus was determined in rat dams nursing litters of eight pups. Food restricted dams showed a longer period of lactational diestrus than ad lib fed dams. Food restriction also caused an increase in progesterone levels that was maintained beyond the period of food restriction itself. Treatment with the dopamine agonist bromocryptine mesylate (0.5 mg/day) either from Day 1 or Day 9 postpartum onward induced early termination of lactational diestrus in both ad lib and food restricted dams but the effect was more rapid in the ad lib fed than in the food restricted females. In both cases, however, the effects of bromocryptine administration on milk delivery showed a similar time course providing indirect evidence that prolactin suppression was equivalent under both diet conditions. These data suggest that food restriction during lactation results in increased progesterone levels that most likely result from increased prolactin release. Further, while prolactin suppression in food restricted dams reduces the duration of lactational diestrus, the latency to do so is somewhat longer than that seen in ad lib fed females, suggesting that some other mechanism may also be operating to suppress ovulation in the food restricted female.  相似文献

Nursing in rabbits occurs inside the nest with circadian periodicity. To determine the contribution of suckling stimulation in regulating such periodicity, we varied the size of the litters provided (1, 2, 4, or 6–8 pups). Nursing does, kept under a 14:10 (L:D) photoperiod, were continuously videotaped from parturition into lactation day 15. Although parturitions occurred throughout the day, a significant negative linear correlation (p?<?0.0001; r?=??0.68) was evident between time of delivery and time of nursing on lactation day 1, regardless of newborn number: longer intervals between these two events were seen in does delivering in the early morning than in those that gave birth late in the day. In rabbits suckling 6–8 pups, a Rayleigh analysis revealed that the population vector best describing their nursing pattern (across lactation days 1–15) had a phase angle?=?58° (corresponding to solar time 0352?h and rho?=?0.78; p?<?0.001). In contrast, the nursing pattern of does nursing litters smaller than 6 pups did not show circadian periodicity; rather, mothers showed multiple entrances into the nest box throughout the day. Cluster analysis revealed that the main equilibrium point of intervals between suckling bouts shifted from 24?h (6–8 pups) to 6?h (4 and 2 pups) and to as low as 4?h with 1 pup. In the groups nursing 2, 4, or 6–8 pups, most nursing episodes were followed by food and water intake. Those mothers also showed self-grooming of the ventrum and nipples after nursing. The incidence of these behaviors was lower in does nursing 1 pup. In conclusion, nursing in rabbits spontaneously occurs with circadian periodicity, but it is largely modulated by a threshold of suckling stimulation. This study investigated maternal aggression in hamsters and examined the effects of early versus late lactation, presence or absence of the litters during the tests, and prior aggressive encounters. There was a total of six experimental groups. Two groups were tested in the presence of their litters on both Days 5 and 15 of lactation; two groups were presented with intruders after a 6-hr interval of mother-litter separation on Days 5 and 15 of lactation. The last two experimental groups were tested on Day 15 only in the presence of their litters or after a 6-hr separation from their litters. Estrous-cycling animals were also tested twice (10 days apart) or once to control for periods of social isolation. Animals were tested in their home cages for 10 min with weight-matched estrous-cycling intruders. Sexually receptive females were not used as controls or intruders. Measures of aggression included fights, attacks, chases, and intruder retreats. Lactating animals initiated significantly higher levels of all measures of aggression than cycling controls. There were no differences in aggression between Days 5 and 15 of lactation or between the groups tested in the presence or absence of their litters. Prior testing on Day 5 had little effect on aggressive responses on Day 15. The results are discussed in terms of comparisons to other species and the factors responsible for high levels of aggression during lactation.  相似文献

In mammals, the duration of lactation varies much more than other life history parameters in relation to body mass, both within and between species. The causes of this variation are poorly understood and seem to result from varying conditions of mothers and young. We studied the effect of long-term maternal food restriction on litter mass at birth, duration of lactation and offspring development in the precocial guinea pig. Mild experimental food restriction during reproduction resulted in prolonged nursing behaviour of mothers. Evidence for a threshold mass at weaning was, however, equivocal. In the guinea pig, benefits of prolonged lactation prove hard to understand, because nutritional benefits are minor. Independently of maternal food regime, pups terminated suckling attempts several days after mothers ceased nursing behaviour. The time between the last nursing behaviour and the last suckling attempts was not longer in litters with higher need, that is, in litters of food-restricted females, than in litters of females fed ad libitum. Under food restriction, mothers maintained their own body mass, leading in pups to lower mass at birth, reduced postnatal growth and lower body mass at maturity. Guinea pig mothers appear to be selected to value their own condition more than that of a litter. We suggest that lengthening of the nursing period under poor conditions is a life history response primarily of precocial mammals.  相似文献

L-Thyroxine (L-T4) was injected into mature rats daily at levels of 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 mug/100 g body weight through estrous cycling, conception, pregnancy, parturition and 20 days of lactation. Mothers which lactated to 20 days were killed and mammary glands measured for DNA and RNA content. Those which were not able to maintain their pups were killed on the day when all pups died. Estrous cycling and pregnancy were not markedly effected by exogenous L-T4 at levels 3-96 times the normal thyroxine secretion rate in rats. After parturition the mothers on L-T4 above 12 mug did not allow the pups to suckle. As a result the pups died within 2-7 days after birth. Levels of L-T4 from 3 to 12 mug allowed lactation to progress, but survival of pups to day 20 of lactation was significantly lower than in the normal control group. The results of this study indicate that high levels of L-T4 inhibit mammary growth and mild secretion. This, in turn, results in the loss of pups, probably through depletion of prolactin as a result of higher metabolic rate due to hyperthyroidism.  相似文献

A mild hypocalcemia (0.5 mg/dl) is observed in rats after 14 days of lactation, but plasma and thyroidal calcitonin (CT) levels are both increased on day 7 of lactation. Plasma CT levels are higher (x2) in lactating females than those found in virgin females from day 7 to the end of lactation (21 days). In vitro, the CT secretion rate after calcium stimulation(3 mM) is not different between lactating and virgin females. The rapid removal of pups after parturition in control females induces a rebound in plasma calcium (+1.4 mg/dl) and plasma phosphate (+1.6 mg/dl) associated with elevated plasma CT values. Our results suggest, that the transient mild hypocalcemia of lactation is preceded by increased plasma CT levels; and that it is not the cause of elevated plasma parathyroid hormone levels already reported by us.  相似文献

Lactating Sprague-Dawley rats had their litters adjusted to 8-10 pups on day 3 of lactation favoring females and some litters were injected with 1.25 mg of testosterone propionate to neonatally androgenize (NA) them. At 22-25 days of age both normal and NA animals were ovariectomized (OVX) and subjected to either sham olfactory bulbectomy (ANOS) + sham pinealectomy (PX), blinding (BLD) + ANOS or BLD + ANOS + pinealectomy (PX). At 13 weeks of age all animals were injected with 0.5 mg of polyestradiol phosphate. At 15 weeks of age the animals were fitted with atrial catheters and at 16 weeks of age blood samples (0.3 ml) were obtained every 3 hours over a 24 hour period. Uterine and anterior pituitary (AP) weights were recorded at sacrifice. Plasma and AP were assayed for prolactin (PRL) by RIA and AP were also assayed for PRL using the Nb2 lymphoma cell PRL bioassay. In both normal and NA animals, BLD + ANOS suppressed plasma PRL levels and PX partially prevented this response. Uterine weights were similar among groups while AP weights were significantly lower for sensory deprived animals. Anterior pituitaries extracted at pH 7.6 had a PRL concentration that was higher for the BLD + ANOS groups when estimated by either RIA or BA, a result that was not observed when the AP were extracted at pH 10.6. The amount of PRL extracted at pH 10.6 was twice that obtained at pH 7.6. Sensory deprived animals that were OVX prepubertally and administered estrogen as adults had a small but significant increase in mean plasma prolactin at 1700 hr. Both normal and NA animals responded in a similar manner to experimental manipulation.  相似文献

The onset of maternal behavior at parturition in rats is hormonally regulated. Recently, we reported that treatment of behaviorally inexperienced, hypophysectomized (hypox), ovariectomized (ovx) rats with a sequential steroid treatment of progesterone (P) and estradiol (E2), and either ectopic anterior pituitary grafts or prolactin (PRL), stimulated maternal responsiveness toward foster young. That growth hormone (GH) has a number of PRL-like activities led us to ask whether the actions of PRL on maternal behavior were specific to PRL or might be shared by other PRL-like protein hormone, i.e., GH. In Experiment 1 we quantified plasma concentrations of GH and PRL by RIA in groups of hypox female rats that were ovariectomized and treated with a combination of ectopic pituitary grafts (Days 1-23) and Silastic capsules filled with P (Days 1-11) and E2 (Days 11-23). Blood samples were collected from Days 1 to 23 of treatment. Both plasma PRL and GH levels increased after grafting, initially rising 10- to 60-fold by Day 4 and gradually declining throughout the remainder of the 23-day sampling period. Throughout the 3-week period after grafting plasma GH levels were as high or higher than those of PRL. In Experiment 2 the behavioral effects of exogenously administered ovine (o)-GH were measured in groups of hypox, ovx rats that were treated with P and E2 as in Experiment 1. Experimental rats were injected twice daily with 0.25 mg oGH beginning on Day 1. Testing for maternal behavior toward foster young was conducted daily from Day 12 to Day 22. In steroid-treated rats, GH treatment stimulated a more rapid onset of maternal behavior (latencies of 3 vs greater than 10 days for vehicle-injected controls). These data indicate that GH, like PRL, is secreted by ectopic pituitary grafts and is capable of stimulating maternal behavior.  相似文献

Female hamsters (Generation 1) were fed ad libitum or were food-restricted to 65-75% of the amount consumed by controls during their first 50 days of life. Subjects were mated at 91 days of age. Their offspring (Generation 2) were fed ad libitum throughout the experiment, and female offspring were also mated at 91 days of age. Generation 3 litters were monitored every fifth day from birth until Day 25 post partum for litter size, sex ratio, and pup weights. Although there were no significant differences in Generation 3 litter sizes at birth, litters descended from food-restricted Generation 1 females (Group R) were significantly smaller on Days 5-25 than litters descended from control Generation 1 females (Group A). Sex ratios remained significantly greater in Group A than in Group R litters from birth to Day 25 but did not vary over time, suggesting similar post-partum mortality rates for both male and female pups. Weights of Generation 3 male and female pups did not vary significantly within treatments at any time. Group A males weighed significantly more than Group R males from birth through Day 25, but weights of Group A and Group R females were always similar. Food restriction early in life may have long-term consequences on sex ratios of subsequent generations in hamsters.  相似文献
