Neonatal male rats were injected with 1.25 mg of testosterone propionate (TP) and compared with oil-injected controls on the acquisition of an active and passive avoidance response at 25 days of age. The TP treated animals acquired the active avoidance response significantly faster than controls, but no differences were found between groups tested on the step-down passive avoidance task. The active-avoidance paradigm was repeated at 70 days of age, with experimental and control animals receiving the same neonatal treatment as the prepubescent subjects. Again the TP group showed facilitated acquisition of the active avoidance response. The TP treatment also produced an increase in activity levels and aversion threshold to footshock in the prepubescent animals. Therefore the active avoidance effect may be interpreted more parsimoniously as a reflection of these latter effects, rather than learning per se.  相似文献

The present study investigated the preference of prepubescent and adult rats for an unrelated conspecific over a closely related conspecific (e.g., father, mother). Preference was measured by the amount of time spent in the vicinity of the stimulus animals as well as who was visited first. To prevent mating behavior, stimulus animals were housed behind wire-mesh. Experiment 1 determined if adult female offspring prefer an unrelated, unfamiliar adult male or their father. The preference of adult female rats was independent of kinship. Experiment 2 evaluated the preference of prepubescent female and male offspring for an unrelated, unfamiliar adult male or their father. The preference of prepubescent female and male rats was also independent of kinship. Experiment 3 evaluated the preference of adult male offspring for an unrelated, unfamiliar adult female or their mother. The preference of adult male rats was independent of kinship. In summary, prepubescent and adult rats do not demonstrate preference for kin vs. non-kin (as measured by time spent near stimulus animals or who was visited first). Although kin recognition provides a mechanism for inbreeding avoidance (Wilson, 1987), in the present study adult rats show no evidence of inbreeding avoidance.  相似文献

Differences in plasma testosterone and androstenedione concentrations in male spotted hyaenas belonging to various reproductive and social categories 4 clans resident in South Africa and Botswana suggest that central-immigrant males have the highest concentrations of androgens, reflecting their roles as mating males. Social inhibition of reproductive function may occur in other males. A reversal in the ratio of testosterone: androstenedione occurs at puberty in most individuals, testosterone becoming the dominant hormone, especially in males that have procured mating rites. Cubs of either sex had low testosterone concentrations, except for a 4-day-old male that displayed adult concentrations, which were accompanied by a temporary testicular descent. Plasma testosterone concentrations in females largely reflected ovarian activity and showed no correlation with androstenedione concentrations. Female cubs had androstenedione concentrations significantly higher than those in all other social categories except for the central-immigrant males. The androgen profiles presented here suggest that the key to the behavioural dominance of female spotted hyaenas over males may lie with the neonatal developmental stages, rather than with the androgen patterns of adult animals.  相似文献

The onset of puberty is a concerted action of many factors which leads to cyclic LHRH release in rats. It has been demonstrated that; in common with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is also involved in the differentiation of the central nervous system. In our previous work, it was shown that a single PACAP injection into neonatal female rats delayed puberty. In the present work, neonatal administration of PACAP delayed the vaginal opening and decreased the weight of anterior pituitaries, the number of expelled ova at the first ovulation and the intensity of LHRH immunostaining in the septo-preoptico-infundibular system. PACAP antiserum had a reverse effect on LHRH immunoreactivity. The other studied parameters in the latter group remained unchanged compared to control rats. It was concluded that neonatal PACAP administration delayed the onset of puberty through the influence of the LHRH neuronal system.  相似文献

Neural systems underlying important behaviors are usually highly conserved across species. The medial preoptic area (MPOA) has been demonstrated to play a crucial role in reward associated with affiliative, nonsexual, social communication in songbirds. However, the role of MPOA in affiliative, rewarding social behaviors (eg, social play behavior) in mammals remains largely unknown. Here we applied our insights from songbirds to rats to determine whether opioids in the MPOA govern social play behavior in rats. Using an immediate early gene (ie, Egr1, early growth response 1) expression approach, we identified increased numbers of Egr1‐labeled cells in the MPOA after social play in adolescent male rats. We also demonstrated that cells expressing mu opioid receptors (MORs, gene name Oprm1) in the MPOA displayed increased Egr1 expression when adolescent rats were engaged in social play using double immunofluorescence labeling of MOR and Egr1. Furthermore, using short hairpin RNA‐mediated gene silencing we revealed that knockdown of Oprm1 in the MPOA reduced the number of total play bouts and the frequency of pouncing. Last, RNA sequencing differential gene expression analysis identified genes involved in neuronal signaling with altered expression after Oprm1 knockdown, and identified Egr1 as potentially a key modulator for Oprm1 in the regulation of social play behavior. Altogether, these results show that the MPOA is involved in social play behavior in adolescent male rats and support the hypothesis that the MPOA is part of a conserved neural circuit across vertebrates in which opioids act to govern affiliative, intrinsically rewarded social behaviors.  相似文献

Sixteen measures of social play between kittens were found to decrease significantly between 12 and 16 weeks of age. Behaviour was little influenced by the presence of the mother during this time. Although males' rates of behaviour did not differ from females' rates when the sexes were compared regardless of group composition, males from all-male groups played at higher rates than females from all-female groups. Females' rates of behaviour declined as the number of male companions decreased. Males' behaviour was little influenced by the number of females in the group. Females with male companions behaved more like males than did females with no male companions, but this was not because they directed behaviour to brothers at higher rates than to sisters.  相似文献

Social play is naturally characterized in intentional terms. An evolutionary account of social play could help scientists to understand the evolution of cognition and intentionality. Alexander Rosenberg (1990) has argued that if play is characterized intentionally or functionally, it is not a behavioral phenotype suitable for evolutionary explanation. If he is right, his arguments would threaten many projects in cognitive ethology. We argue that Rosenberg's arguments are unsound and that intentionally and functionally characterized phenotypes are a proper domain for ethological investigation.  相似文献

Play activity differences between sexes have been predicted in sexually dimorphic species. A non-random composition of pairs of players in social play has also been suggested. In order to test these proposals in piglets, two experiments were set up on a focal-animal basis.In the first trial, social play as observed in two sets of 16 weaned piglets, from 4 litters of 8 piglets, each with an equal number of males and females. A total of 133 and 101 plays, respectively, were recorded and analysed using a log-linear model including the sex and litter of each player and their interactions. The main results show: (a) a greater play activity in males than in females; (b) more play between partners of the same sex than expected assuming statistical independence; (c) more play between partners born in the same litter than expected assuming statistical independence.The role of the pheromones segregated by submaxillary salivary glands in the sexual recognition evidenced in the first experiment was tested in the second trial. Two sets of 16 piglets, coming from 16 different litters, were observed; one of them as control and the other with 8 males whose glands had been removed and 8 normal females. The analysis of 230 plays recorded confirms the results of the first trial concerning sex and does not show significant differences either in the total number of observed plays or in the preference for partners of the same sex between sets, implying a recognition mechanism other than that of these pheromones.The observed sexual dimorphism in play activity as well as the sex and littermate preferences are in agreement with the hypothesis which assigns adaptive values to these social plays.  相似文献

Reliable evidence was obtained of the simultaneous performance of social grooming and social play behaviors by individuals among wild chimpanzees of the M group in Mahale Mountains National Park. I observed three cases of this performance: in an old female, a young female, and an adult male. While the agent was grooming the back of an adult bimanually, an infant or a juvenile approached the agent. The agent then started playing with the infant/juvenile using only the right hand, while simultaneously grooming the back of the adult with the left hand. In one case, an old female continued the simultaneous performance for about 1 min. Such performances probably occur at low frequency because they are not often required. The similarity in the neurobiological bases and the functions of social grooming and social play behaviors, both of which include repetitive contact with the body of another individual, may facilitate their simultaneous performance.  相似文献

Field studies in various species ofMacaca (Cercopithecidae) provided evidence for specific visual displays that typically accompany playful interactions. The aim of our study was to examine whether and when playing individuals would use auditory displays, i.e. vocalizations that often occur during social play as well. The study was conducted on a population of semi-free Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) with a special focus on the composition and dynamics of playful wrestling (synonymous term: ‘rough-and-tumble play’). Analyses of dyadic encounters between subadult males allowed us to distinguish five types of playful behaviours and three types of vocalizations. The latter were clearly linked to encounters where effects of visual signals were impaired, e.g. during close body contact. During wrestling, vocalizations tended to increase in the beginning of an encounter, whereas the last seconds of wrestling often showed a decline in vocalization rate. Our results allowed us to conclude that these vocalizations may supplement or in many cases even substitute interactional effects of visual signals, e.g. the ‘play face.’  相似文献

Social experiences throughout life influence gene expression and behavior, however, early in development these influences have a particularly profound effect. In mammals, mother-infant interactions are the primary source of social stimulation and result in long-term changes in offspring phenotype. This has previously been demonstrated in rodents and primates, however, recent studies in rats have advanced our understanding of how these influences are achieved at a mechanistic level, through epigenetic modification, and provide a model for studying the transmission of social behavior across generations. These studies emphasize the importance of a life-history approach to the study of brain development; incorporating information about genetic background, prenatal and postnatal maternal care received, and post-weaning social interactions of an individual, in addition to the social environment experienced by previous generations.  相似文献

Systemic kainic acid administration to prepubescent rats, in a convulsant dose, results in permanent changes in behaviour, learning and memory in adulthood (Holmes et al., 1988, Epilepsia 29, 721-730). With regard to the hypothesis that cholinergic mechanisms play a crucial role in cognitive processes, M1- and M2-muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, choline acetyltransferase, and high-affinity choline uptake as well as benzodiazepine receptors were studied in selected cortical regions (frontal, temporal, somatosensory, visual, piriform cortex), in amygdala, hippocampus, and in the nucleus basalis of Meynert from adult rats, which received at the age of 25 days a single dosage of 11 mg/kg, s.c. kainic acid. Kainic acid treatment of prepubescent rats resulted in the adult brain in decreased numbers of the total population of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in frontal (by 27%, P < 0.05, two-tailed Student's t-test), temporal (22%, P < 0.05), and piriform cortex (31%, P < 0.05), in amygdala (24%, P < 0.05), and nucleus basalis of Meynert (39%, P < 0.02). The binding affinity was unchanged in these regions. However, in the hippocampus, the dissociation constant was significantly increased following kainic acid treatment, while the receptor numbers remained unchanged. Analysis of competition experiments with the muscarinic antagonist pirenzepine revealed that the reductions of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the cortical regions after kainic acid treatment are mainly due to decreases in the number of the muscarinic M1-receptor subtype.
