We studied the natural radioactivity distribution of an α-emitting radionuclide,226Ra in water, sediment and biota (plankton, weed, snail, bivalve, prawn and fish) of Cauvery river ecosystem extending a stretch of 95 km. The dissolved226Ra concentration in river water ranged from 0.82mBq.I-1 to l 06mBq.l-1 (mean: 0.93mBq.l-1) and the activity in river sediments from 4.7Bq.kg-1 to 6.9Bq.Kg-1 (mean: 5.6Bq.kgg-1 dry wt.). The226Ra activity levels in the biota were within a narrow range from below detection limit to 3.80 Bq.kg-1 (wet wt). Generally higher226Ra concentrations are observed in the shells and bones of aquatic organisms than in their tissues and muscles. The concentration factors (CFs) of226Ra for the biotic components ranged from ∼101 to ∼103. The significance of226Ra activity in the abiotic and biotic components of Cauvery river are discussed.  相似文献

226Ra2+ is removed from uranium mine effluents by coprecipitation with BaSO4. (Ba,Ra)SO4 sludge samples from two Canadian mine sites were found to contain active heterotrophic populations of aerobic, anaerobic, denitrifying, and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Under laboratory conditions, sulfate reduction occurred in batch cultures when carbon sources such as acetate, glucose, glycollate, lactate, or pyruvate were added to samples of (Ba,Ra)SO4 sludge. No external sources of nitrogen or phosphate were required for this activity. Further studies with lactate supplementation showed that once the soluble SO4(2-) in the overlying water was depleted, Ba2+ and 226Ra2+ were dissolved from the (Ba,Ra)SO4 sludge, with the concurrent production of S2-. Levels of dissolved 226Ra2+ reached approximately 400 Bq/liter after 10 weeks of incubation. Results suggest that the ultimate disposal of these sludges must maintain conditions to minimize the activity of the indigenous sulfate-reducing bacteria to ensure that unacceptably high levels of 226Ra2+ are not released to the environment.  相似文献

Scale and sludge deposits formed during oil production can contain elevated levels of Ra, often coprecipitated with barium sulfate (barite). The potential for sulfate-reducing bacteria to release 226Ra and Ba (a Ra analog) from oil-field barite was evaluated. The concentration of dissolved Ba increased when samples containing pipe scale, tank sludge, or oil-field brine pond sediment were incubated with sulfate-reducing bacteria Desulfovibrio sp., Str LZK1, isolated from an oil-field brine pond. However, Ba release was not stoichiometric with sulfide production in oil-field samples, and < 0.1% of the Ba was released. Potential for the release of 226Ra was demonstrated, and the 226Ra release associated with sulfate-reducing activity was predictable from the amount of Ba released. As with Ba, only a fraction of the 226Ra expected from the amount of sulfide produced was released, and most of the Ra remained associated with the solid material.  相似文献

Interrelations between the lipid characteristics of the blood erythrocytes and 226Ra accumulation in the body of tundra voles (Microtus oeconomus Pall.) inhabiting areas with different levels of the radiation background were investigated. It is shown that the ratio of the phospholipid (PL) fractions which cause the blood erythrocyte structure depends on the phase of the population cycle, as well as on the sex and age of tundra voles. The statistically significant interrelation between lysoforms and the sphingomielin content has been revealed in the blood erythrocyte PL of tundra voles; its scale somewhat differs for the animals from the reference and Ra areas. The peroxide concentration in the blood erythrocyte lipids of tundra voles from the Ra area exceeded the control values in all mature groups of the animals trapped at the depression phase of the population density. The 226Ra content in the bodies of the tundra voles which were trapped in the Ra area at the increased phase of the population cycle is for certain higher than that for the animals from the reference area. Interrelations between the lipid peroxidation parameters in the blood erythrocytes and the body 226Ra content for separate sex-age groups of tundra voles have been revealed.  相似文献

The results of studies on uranium and radium distribution in soil and vegetation at the territory contaminated by wastes of radium plant in 1930-1950 are presented. Specific activities of 226Ra and 238U in soil varied as 0.01-200 and 0.004-7.58 Bq/g per ash respectively. The radionuclides are mainly concentrated in the upper layer of soil profile. In the vegetation concentrations of 226Ra and 238U varied as 0.64-132 0.001-0.02 Bq/g per ash respectively. Among the woody species studied, Betula pubescens and Sorbus aucuparia are characterized by the highest absorption of radionuclides. For all plants studied a negative linear dependence is shown between logarithm of TF (TF = [226Ra, 238U in plant, Bq/g per ash]/[226Ra, 238U in soil, Bq/g per ash]) and logarithm of 226Ra and 238U concentrations in soil. The findings obtained can be used in modeling of biological absorption in radioecological investigations.  相似文献

The present study describes the response of a bacterial strain, isolated from a hot spring in an area with the highest levels of natural radiation, under radium ((226)Ra) stress. The bacterium has been characterized as a novel and efficient radium biosorbent and identified as a variant of Serratia marcescens by biochemical tests and molecular recognition. In order to gain insights into key cellular events that allow this strain to survive and undergo (226)Ra adaptation and biosorption, the strain was tested under two experimental conditions of 1000 and 6000 Bq (226)Ra stress. A proteomic approach involving two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry was used to identify the differentially expressed proteins under (226)Ra stress. Functional assessment of identified proteins with significantly altered expression levels revealed several mechanisms thought to be involved in (226)Ra adaptation and conferring resistant phenotype to the isolate, including general stress adaptation, anti-oxidative stress, protein and nucleic acid synthesis, energy metabolism, efflux and transport proteins. It suggests that this strain through evolution is particularly well adapted to the high background radiation environment and could represent an alternative source to remove (226)Ra from such areas as well as industrial radionuclide polluted wastewaters.  相似文献

This paper reports the results derived fromradium isotopes of a submarine groundwaterdischarge (SGD) intercomparison in thenortheast Gulf of Mexico. Radium isotopesamples were collected from seepage meters,piezometers, and surface and deep ocean waters.Samples collected within the near-shore SGDexperimental area were highly enriched in allfour radium isotopes; offshore samples wereselectively enriched. Samples collected fromseepage meters were about a factor of 2–3higher in radium activity compared to theoverlying waters. Samples from piezometers,which sampled 1–4 meters below the sea bed were1–2 orders of magnitude higher in radiumisotopes than surface waters. The twolong-lived Ra isotopes, 228Ra and226Ra, provide convincing evidence thatthere are two sources of SGD to the study area:shallow seepage from the surficial aquifer andinput from a deeper aquifer. A three end-membermixing model can describe the Ra distributionin these samples. The short-lived radium isotopes, 223Ra and224Ra, were used to establish mixing ratesfor the near-shore study area. Mixing wasretarded within 3 km of shore due to a strongsalinity gradient. The product of the mixingrate and the offshore 226Ra gradientestablished the 226Ra flux. This flux mustbe balanced by Ra input from SGD. The flux ofSGD within 200 m of shore based on the226Ra budget was 1.5 m3 min?1.This flux agreed well with other estimatesbased on seepage meters and 222Rn.  相似文献

Young adult beagle dogs received a single injection of 38.1 kBq/kg body wt 226Ra and were serially sacrificed at 4 to 2955 days postinjection. Samples of sites of trabecular bone in the lumbar vertebral body, proximal ulna, and distal femoral metaphysis and epiphysis were analyzed autoradiographically. The time-dependent changes in the average 226Ra concentrations in the four regions were analyzed in terms of a compartmental model. The clearance rate from the lumbar vertebral body was about four times more rapid than for the proximal ulna and distal femoral epiphysis. Ratios of hotspot to diffuse label concentrations varied from about 10 to 23. The dose rate to the endosteum ranged between 8.7 and 39.5 mGy/day initially and 4 and 10.5 mGy/day toward the end of the observation period. Mean marrow dose rates were lower by a factor of 3 to 9.5. During their residence time the nuclei of bone lining cells receive a maximum dose of 8 Gy in the proximal ulna (2955 days after injection) and a minimum dose of 0.63 Gy in the lumbar vertebra (2955 days after injection). This corresponds on the average to 17 and 1.4 alpha-particle hits to the cell nuclei, respectively.  相似文献

Metabolism of radium including the transfer to the fetus through the placenta was studied during three successive pregnancies 92, 155, and 213 days after injection of 226Ra in young female rats. The cumulative fecal and urinary excretions of 226Ra in a 213-day period following injection were about 30 and 15% injected dose (%ID), respectively, most of them occurring during the first 42 days. The excretions were similar in both the pregnant and control (unmated) rats. The whole-body burden of radium (mostly in the skeleton) determined by actual analysis of the entire body was similar in the two groups and was about 53, 48, and 44 %ID at the first, second, and third pregnancy, respectively. Pregnancy alone, therefore, did not significantly affect metabolism of radium. At 20 days of gestation the mean placental content of radium was 0.005, 0.0045, and 0.0036 %ID in the first, second, and third litter, respectively; the corresponding mean fetal content was 0.01, 0.008, and 0.005 %ID. The radium burden of the full-term neonate (21-22 days) was 0.014 and 0.011 %ID for the first and second delivery, respectively. The total amount calculated of radium transferred from the mother to the 8-10 fetuses in a litter did not exceed about 0.3% of the maternal content per each pregnancy. Comparison of the ratio of radium and calcium in the fetus and maternal skeleton shows that there is a Ra-Ca discrimination during their passage from the mother to the fetus.  相似文献

Uranium mine workers are exposed to ore dust containing uranium and its daughter products during different mining operations. These radionuclides may pose inhalation hazards to workers during the course of their occupation. The most significant among these radionuclides is 226Ra. The measurement of radium body burden of uranium mine workers is important to assess their internal exposure. For this purpose, the radon-in-breath measurement technique has been used in the present paper. Workers at the Jaduguda mine, India, associated with different categories of mining operations were monitored between 2001 and 2007. The measurement results indicate that workers—depending on mining operation category—show 226Ra body burdens ranging from 0.15 to 2.85 kBq. The maximum body burden was found for workers associated with timbering operations, with an average 226Ra body burden of 0.85 ± 0.54 kBq. Overall, the average value observed for 800 workers was 0.76 ± 0.51 kBq, which gives rise to an average effective dose of 1.67 mSv per year for inhalation and 0.21 mSv per year for ingestion.  相似文献

We hypothesized that reliance on lactate as a means of energy distribution is higher after a prolonged period of acclimatization (9 wk) than it is at sea level due to a higher lactate Ra and disposal from active skeletal muscle. To evaluate this hypothesis, six Danish lowlanders (25 +/- 2 yr) were studied at rest and during 20 min of bicycle exercise at 146 W at sea level (SL) and after 9 wk of acclimatization to 5,260 m (Alt). Whole body glucose Ra was similar at SL and Alt at rest and during exercise. Lactate Ra was also similar for the two conditions at rest; however, during exercise, lactate Ra was substantially lower at SL (65 micro mol. min(-1). kg body wt(-1)) than it was at Alt (150 micro mol. min(-1). kg body wt(-1)) at the same exercise intensity. During exercise, net lactate release was approximately 6-fold at Alt compared with SL, and related to this, tracer-calculated leg lactate uptake and release were both 3- or 4-fold higher at Alt compared with SL. The contribution of the two legs to glucose disposal was similar at SL and Alt; however, the contribution of the two legs to lactate Ra was significantly lower at rest and during exercise at SL (27 and 81%) than it was at Alt (45 and 123%). In conclusion, at rest and during exercise at the same absolute workload, CHO and blood glucose utilization were similar at SL and at Alt. Leg net lactate release was severalfold higher, and the contribution of leg lactate release to whole body lactate Ra was higher at Alt compared with SL. During exercise, the relative contribution of lactate oxidation to whole body CHO oxidation was substantially higher at Alt compared with SL as a result of increased uptake and subsequent oxidation of lactate by the active skeletal muscles.  相似文献

The accumulation of natural radioisotopes by aquatic organisms and bottom sediments was studied in two small rivers, one uncontaminated and the other polluted by effluents of uranium ore mining and milling. Parabolic regressions between the water and uppermost sediment content of both uranium and total beta activity (corrected for 40K content) is presented and demonstrates the water cumulative capacity of organically rich sediments. For 226Ra no significant differences between sediments with different organic content were found. The 226Ra content of bottom sediments is expressed as a power function of radium and calcium concentration in the water. In the given reaches, 53% and 85% of uranium and over 90% of 226Ra and total beta activity (corrected for 40K) was accumulated in the upper two centimetres of sediments and biomass of aquatic vegetation. Filamentous algae, plankton, aquatic bryophyta and macrophyta from the present and other published data showed rather higher cumulation capacities as compared with bottom sediments.  相似文献

In a series of experiments, mainly CBA/H, but also C2H/H, mice aged 3 months were injected intraperitoneally with solutions of 90Sr Cl2, the dose per mouse varying from 7 to 20 muCi, and compared with similar mice treated with 226Ra or 239Pu, discussed elsewhere. In male mice, the commonest tumour resulting at each dose of 90Sr was non-osteogenic (angio) sarcoma, a tumour not seen after 226Ra. In females, this tumour occurred far less frequently than osteosarcoma. In CBA mice of both sexes converted to radiation chimaeras (which are sterile) and similarly treated with 90Sr, the only skeletal tumours were osteosarcomas. When only half the body of CBA mice was X-irradiated with 1000 rad and the mice given 90Sr, non-osteogenic sarcoma occurred predominantly in those mice X-irradiated in the cephalic half. The results suggest that intact testes may provide co-factors for this type of neoplasm, whereas others have shown that oestrogens facilitate murine osteosarcoma. The non-osteogenic osteosarcomas arise from damaged stromal elements in bone-marrow of selected bones. The risk to this component of bone-marrow, as well as to haematopoietic tissue, should be considered in radiation protection.  相似文献

The survival of Chinese hamster cells exposed to 59.5 keV 241Am gamma rays was compared with that obtained after exposure to 226Ra gamma rays. The Fricke dosimeter in conjunction with the calculational techniques of transition-zone dosimetry was employed to determine the dose rates to the cells at the petri dish/growth medium interface. The dose rates to the cells ranged from 11 to 133 cGy/h. In all cases, cell survival versus dose was best described by a simple exponential function of dose. For both radiations, graphs of D0 versus dose rate show complex but similar patterns of peaks and valleys. As the curve for 241Am is displaced toward lower dose rates compared with that for 226Ra, the relative biological effectiveness of 241Am vs 226Ra varies considerably with dose rate, ranging from 1.7 at 20 cGy/h to 1.1 at 40 cGy/h to 1.6 at 50 cGy/h. This phenomenon may be due to the LET-dependent accumulation of cells at the G2 + M interface in the cell cycle. The mean unrestricted track-average LET of 241Am (3.7 keV/microns) is 12 times higher than that for 226Ra (0.31 keV/microns) but only one-fifth that of carbon ions (18 keV/microns) for which G2 + M pile-up is observed. Application of the in vitro data derived from this study to the clinical situation, where the dose rate decreases rapidly with distance from the source, suggests that, dose for dose, 241Am will produce results little different from those obtained with 226Ra.  相似文献

A life-span study on male C57BL mice after injection of various doses of 241Am was conducted. The effects on life span were evaluated and the incidence of tumors was determined by procedures that take competing risks into account. Bone tumors were induced in the mice by injections of 22 and 58 Bq 241Am per g. The mice died early from nonneoplastic diseases at the higher dose levels (190, 373, and 1197 Bq 241Am/g). Additionally, spontaneously occurring tumors such as liver carcinomas, lymphosarcomas, and lymphoreticulosarcomas occurred at an enhanced rate with increasing dose level. The data for survival time after 241Am injection and death with bone tumor were compared to data collected previously for 226Ra-injected mice of the same C57BL strain. This enabled direct comparison in the same strain of the effects of the bone-surface seeker 241Am to the effects of the bone-volume seeker 226Ra. The proportional hazards model was applied and the rate of death with bone tumor was 12.9 +/- 5.2 times higher after 241Am injection than after 226Ra injection if the regression covariate was the average dose to the skeleton. The relative risk was 3.5 +/- 1.7 if regressed on the injected radioactivity. The mortality rate after 241Am injection was 20.4 +/- 3.6 times higher than after 226Ra injection if regressed on average dose to the skeleton.  相似文献

The risk of an enhanced level of radionuclides of the uranium and thorium decay series in the environment for reference plant species (Pinus sylvestris and Vicia cracca) was assessed. 238U, 230Th, 226Ra, 210Po, 232Th and 228Th concentration factors for plants were found to be lower than one. The aboveground parts of Vicia cracca sampled from the area of the radium production waste storage mainly accumulated 22Ra, Pinus sylvestris branches--210Pb, 226Ra and 210Po. LOEDR calculated for the chromosome aberration frequency in both plant studies was 17-71 microGy/h. LOERD values for the reproductive capacity decrease in P. sylvestris and V. cracca were 17-71 microGy/h and 116-258 microGy/h, correspondingly. EDR10 for the chromosome aberration frequency in P. sylvestris and V. cracca were 148 and 347 microGy/h, that is, correspondingly, 255 and 708 times higher that background values. EDR10 for the plant reproductive capacity was 11-34 microGy/h, which 19-69 times increases the background values.  相似文献

The natural survival, relative to properly chosen controls, of 26 beagle dogs injected once intravenously with an average of 0.58 +/- 0.04 kBq 239Pu/kg, 23 dogs injected with 2.31 +/- 0.43 kBq 226Ra/kg, 13 dogs injected with 1.84 +/- 0.26 kBq 228Ra/kg, 12 dogs injected with 0.56 +/- 0.030 kBq 228Th/kg, and 12 dogs injected with 21.13 +/- 1.74 kBq 90Sr/kg was evaluated statistically. The amounts of these radionuclides are related directly to the estimated maximum permissible body burdens for humans suggested in ICRP II (1959). They constitute a level of exposure that initially was assumed to cause no deleterious effects in dogs. This study had two objectives: (1) identification of homogeneous control groups against which to evaluate the survival of the irradiated groups and (2) comparison of the survival characteristics and estimation of mortality or hazard rate ratios for control dogs vs dogs injected with the baseline dosages given above. It was shown, by goodness-of-fit plots, that the Cox proportional hazards model was an appropriate method of analysis. Therefore, covariates that possibly could influence survival were tested for significance. Only the effects of grand mal seizure, which is caused in epileptic dogs by an external stimulus and can be fatal if untreated, were significant (P less than 0.0001). Consequently, in the final model, death from grand mal seizure was considered as accidental. After censoring the dogs dying from grand mal seizure, it was established that the data for the control groups from previous and contemporary experiments could be pooled. The change in hazard rates relative to controls resulting from exposure to the baseline radionuclide level was modest, 1.6 times for 239Pu (P = 0.033), 1.0(4) for 226Ra (P = 0.86), 1.9 for 228Ra (P = 0.035), 2.5 for 228Th (P less than 0.001), and 0.52 for 90Sr (P = 0.041). Bone tumor induction was clearly elevated in dogs injected with 239Pu and 228Th. When the effect of these bone tumors on survival was removed by censoring, the dogs injected with 239Pu were indistinguishable from the controls. In contrast, the effects of bone tumor on group survival of the 228Ra and 228Th dogs were not significant. Thus, no additional life-shortening effects beyond those attributable to bone tumor were suggested by these data for 239Pu, but other, as yet unspecified, confounders are suggested for 228Ra and 228Th.  相似文献

At the present time no unequivocal evidence exists which shows that a reduction in the body-burden of a radionuclide by decorporative treatment results in a proportional decrease in the risk of long-term radiation effects. We have investigated the effectiveness of the daily administration of Na-alginate via the diet in removing 226Ra from the skeleton and in reducing the number of late effects such as osteosarcomas. The animals used were male C57Bl mice which had been injected with one of three different amounts of 226Ra (4.4, 10.7 or 24.8 kBq) four days prior to the onset of the decorporative treatment. The results showed that although this treatment was able to produce a substantial reduction in the 226Ra content of the mice it did not reduce the incidence of osteosarcoma. These results question the effectiveness of decorporation procedures initiated at longer times after contamination.  相似文献
