  • 1.1. Larvae of the bromeliad crab, Metopaulias depressus Rathbun, were reared in the laboratory, and changes in dry weight (W), ash-free W (AFW), carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, protein, lipid, carbohydrates and respiration rate were measured during development from hatching to metamorphosis.
  • 2.2. Development was successful in rain-water from bromeliads (pH < 5–6), but not in river water from the same region (pH 8). It is abbreviated, with two non-feeding zoeal stages (2.5–3.5 days each) and a feeding megalopa (8.5–10 days). Development to metamorphosis can also be completed in the absence of food (facultative lecithotrophy).
  • 3.3. Dry weight and other absolute biomass values per individual vary significantly between different hatches, whereas changes in the relative (% of W or AFW) composition follow quite invariable patterns: ash increases from hatching through the first part of megalopa development, organic biomass decreases concurrently.
  • 4.4. Elemental and biochemical data show that lecithotrophy of the zoeal stages as well as continued endotrophic development in the megalopa depend chiefly on degradation of lipid reserves and less on protein. No significant growth was observed in organic constituents when food was available, but without food the megalopa reached metamorphosis with only half the lipid and less than two thirds the protein of fed siblings.
  • 5.5. The relationship between C and lipid is similar in M. depressus larvae as in planktotrophic marine crab larvae, whereas that between N and protein differs; it indicates the presence of unusually large quantities of unidentified non-protein N.
  • 6.6. Exuvial losses of late premoult biomass or energy are very low in the zoeal stages (2 and 3%), but increase in the megalopa (16% in W, 10% in C, 7–8% in N, H and energy).
  • 7.7. Respiration rate per individual increases gradually during larval development (0.6–0.8 μg O2/hr). Starved megalopa larvae reveal lower individual but higher W-specific metabolism than fed larvae.
  • 8.8. Bioenergetic traits of abbreviated larval development are discussed in relation to those known from regular (planktotrophic marine) development of brachyuran crabs. M. depressus is highly adapted to life and development in a physically extreme terrestrial environment.

Summary The phyllobranchiate gills of the green shore crab Carcinus maenas have been examined histologically and ultrastructurally. Each gill lamella is bounded by a chitinous cuticle. The apical surface of the branchial epithelium contacts this cuticle, and a basal lamina segregates the epithelium from an intralamellar hemocoel. In animals acclimated to normal sea water, five epithelial cell types can be identified in the lamellae of the posterior gills: chief cells, striated cells, pillar cells, nephrocytes, and glycocytes. Chief cells are the predominant cells in the branchial epithelium. They are squamous or low cuboidal and likely play a role in respiration. Striated cells, which are probably involved in ionoregulation, are also squamous or low cuboidal. Basal folds of the striated cells contain mitochondria and interdigitate with the bodies and processes of adjacent cells. Pillar cells span the hemocoel to link the proximal and distal sides of a lamella. Nephrocytes are large, spherical cells with voluminous vacuoles. They are rimmed by foot processes or pedicels and frequently associate with the pillar cells. Glycocytes are pleomorphic cells packed with glycogen granules and multigranular rosettes. The glycocytes often mingle with the nephrocytes. Inclusion of the nephrocytes and glycocytes as members of the branchial epithelium is justified by their participation in intercellular junctions and their position internal to the epithelial basal lamina.  相似文献

The mating system of seaweed flies is characterized by scramble competition and a premating struggle during which females vigorously attempt to remove mounted males and prevent copulation. Here we investigate factors affecting the willingness of males to mate in five species of Coelopa : C. frigida, C. nebularum, C. ursina, C. pilipes and C. vanduzeei. The data from 2000 individual observations of pairs of flies revealed no association between female size and the willingness of males to mate, suggesting that males do not exhibit mate choice for larger, more fecund females. Male willingness to mount was associated with male size in C. frigida, C. nebularum and C. ursina, although not in C. pilipes and C. vanduzeei. There is considerable intraspecific variation in male size in the former three species, including the presence of two almost discrete size classes within C. nebularum. We suggest that males of different sizes in these species may be adopting alternative reproductive strategies. Large males may benefit from increased longevity and their ability to withstand female rejection responses, whereas small males are more active and thus likely to encounter and mount more females. In addition small males develop faster and thus gain earlier access to females. Copyright 1999 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.  相似文献

For the first time, a morphological study of haemocytes from the crab Carcinus aestuarii was carried out by means of light microscopy and differing cytochemical assays. Analysis of haemocyte size frequency distribution (performed by means of a Coulter Counter) revealed the presence of two distinct haemocyte fractions in C. aestuarii haemolymph, depending on cell size. The first fraction was of about 3–5 µm in diameter and 30–50 fL in volume, the second was of about 6–12 µm in diameter and over 200 fL in volume. Mean cell diameter and volume were 8.20±1.7 µm and 272.30±143.5 fL, respectively. Haemocytes observed under light microscope were distinguished in three cell types: granulocytes (28%; 11.94±1.43 µm in diameter) with evident cytoplasmic granules, semigranulocytes (27%; 12.38±1.76 µm in diameter) with less granules than granulocytes, and hyalinocytes (44%; 7.88±1.6 µm in diameter) without granules. In addition, a peculiar cell type was occasionally found (about 1%): it was 25–30 µm in diameter and had a great vacuole and a peripheral cytoplasm with granules. Granulocyte and semigranulocyte granules stained in vivo with Neutral Red, indicating that they were lysosomes. Giemsa’s dye confirmed that granulocytes and semigranulocytes were larger than hyalinocytes. Pappenheim’s panoptical staining and Ehrlich’s triacid mixture allowed to distinguish granule-containing cells (including semigranulocytes) in acidophils (64%), basophils (35%) and neutrophils (1%). Hyalinocytes showed always a basophilic cytoplasm. Haemocytes were positive to the PAS reaction for carbohydrates, even if cytoplasm carbohydrate distribution varied among cell types. Lastly, lipids were found on cell membrane and in cytoplasm of all haemocyte types in the form of black spots produced after Sudan Black B staining. The morphological characterisation of C. aestuarii haemocytes by light microscopy was necessary before performing both ultrastructural and functional studies of circulating cells.Key words: Carcinus aestuarii, crab, haemocytes, light microscopy, cytochemical assays, morphological characterisation.  相似文献

Unique structures, which have been observed on the spines of the chelipeds in a recently described deep-water Hawaiian hermit crab, Nematopagurus spinulosensoris McLaughlin & Brock, 1974, are herein described. At present the function of these structures is unknown; however, their morphology appears to be more complicated than that of any sensory structures heretofore ascribed to decapod crustaceans.  相似文献

The mating of the crabs is described. The incubation period of the macrolecithal egg of the freshwater crab, Potamon edulis (Latr.) is 46 ± 1 days long. One of the main features of the development of the egg is its extreme abbreviation. In addition to the nauplius, metanauplius, and zoea, the megalopa stage is also imprisoned in the egg. The extent to which direct development is carried in Potamon is unique among the Brachyura. This is considered to have been a pre-adaptation to the colonization of a freshwater habitat by the Potamonidae.  相似文献

In this contribution a new species of the land crab genus Gecarcinus Leach, 1814, from the Neotropical Pacific coast of South America is described and illustrated. In addition to its unique body color, Gecarcinus nobiliisp. n. is distinguished from congeners by a distinctly wider carapace front and differences in the shape of the infraorbital margin. The new species is not isolated from Gecarcinus populations from the Pacific coast of Central America by an insurmountable geographic barrier. Considering the closure of the Panamanian Isthmus as a calibration point for morphological divergence between the trans-isthmian mainland populations of Gecarcinus, the virtual lack of morphological differentiation (other than color) between them and the distinctness of G. nobiliisp. n. suggests that G. nobiliisp. n. evolved from a common ancestor before the Isthmus closed.  相似文献

For the first time, a functional study of haemocytes from the crab Carcinus aestuarii was performed in order to evaluate their involvement in immune responses. Total haemocyte count (THC), phagocytosis, haemolymph opsonisation properties, hydrolytic and oxidative enzyme activities, and production of intracellular superoxide anion were evaluated. A great variability in THC was recorded among individuals, and haemocyte mean number was 6.4 (×106) cells/ml haemolymph. Although only hyalinocytes were able to phagocytose yeast cells or Zymosan, phagocytic index was low (3%) and did not increase significantly (4%) after pre-incubation of yeast and Zymosan in cell-free haemolymph, suggesting that haemolymph did not have opsonising properties. All haemocyte types produced superoxide anion, whereas only granulocytes were positive to the hydrolytic enzymes assayed. In addition, only granulocytes were positive to phenoloxidase activity. Both Petri dish and spectrophotometric assays revealed a very low lysozyme-like activity in cell-free haemolymph (CFH) and haemocyte lysate (HL), although enzyme activity was higher in CFH than in HL. Interestingly, normalisation of data as to total protein content in CFH and HL resulted in an opposite situation, lysozyme-like activity being higher in HL than in CFH. This demonstrated that haemolymph of C. aestuarii has a high quantity of total proteins, functional properties of which need to be better investigated in future studies. Overall, the results obtained in the present study indicated that C. aestuarii haemocytes are not very active phagocytic cells, but they are more active in terms of both hydrolytic and oxidative enzyme activities and superoxide anion production.  相似文献

Although the role of colour in mate choice is well known, few tests of colour vision have been based on mating behaviour. Females of the fiddler crab Uca mjoebergi have recently been shown to use claw coloration to recognize conspecific males. In this study I demonstrate that the females use colour vision for this task; preferentially approaching yellow claws over grey claws regardless of their intensity while failing to discriminate between yellow claws differing in intensity. This is one of only a handful of studies confirming the involvement of colour vision in mate choice and the first conclusive evidence in fiddler crabs.  相似文献

The population genetic structure of the swimming crab Callinectes danae (Crustacea, Portunidae) was studied by allozyme electrophoresis along the southern coast of Brazil (Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul States). The biology of C. danae is poorly known, but some studies suggest that this species depends on estuaries for reproduction and for completing its life cycle, using them as recruitment sites and nursery grounds. If estuarine retention is an important process acting in favour of the recruitment of local populations, we should expect restriction of gene flow among populations inhabiting different estuaries. Therefore, our aim was to establish whether gene flow between populations of C. danaefrom different estuaries was restricted. Samples were collected in four estuaries: São Francisco do Sul, Laguna (Santa Catarina), Patos Lagoon and Chuí Stream (Rio Grande do Sul). Eleven loci were resolved. Contingency table tests (2 and G) showed significant differences (P0.05) between pair-wise subpopulation comparisons. The estimated F ST was =0.065±0.019, suggesting a moderate structuring of C. danae populations. No relationship was found for the number of migrants between pairs of subpopulations and the geographic distance separating them (P= 0.292; r 2= 0.269). Nevertheless, UPGMA analysis clustered together those estuaries separated by less than 250 km. Low adult migration, the requirement of estuaries as reproductive areas, recruitment sites and nursery grounds for juveniles, together with larval and post-larval retention processes, are discussed in the context of their importance in preventing panmixia among subpopulations inhabiting different estuaries.  相似文献

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is the main intermediate filament protein used as a marker for the identification of astrocytes in the central nervous system of vertebrates. Analogous filaments have been observed in the glial cells of many mollusks and annelids but not in crustaceans. The present study was carried out to identify by light microscopy immunohistochemistry, immunoelectronmicroscopy and immunoblotting, GFAP-like positive structures in the visual system of the crab Ucides cordatus as additional information to help detect and classify glial cells in crustaceans. Conventional electron microscopy, light microscopy of semithin sections and fluorescence light microscopy were also employed to characterize cells and tissues morphology. Our results indicated the presence of GFAP-like positive cell processes and cell bodies in the retina and adjoining optic lobe. The labeling pattern on the reactive profiles was continuous and very well defined, differing considerably from what has been previously reported in the central nervous system of some mollusks, where a diffuse spotted fluorescence pattern of labeling was observed. We suggest that this glial filament protein may be conserved in the evolution of the invertebrate nervous systems and that it may be used as a label for some types of glial cells in the crab.  相似文献

Stewart, B. A., Gouws, G., Daniels, S. R. & Matthee, C. A. (2004). Delimitation of morphologically similar sponge crab species of the genus Pseudodromia (Crustacea, Decapoda, Dromiidae) from South Africa. — Zoologica Scripta , 33 , 45–55.
Presently, three Pseudodromia sponge crab species are recognized, all of which are endemic to the continental shelf off the coast of South Africa. Two of these differ only in the morphology of their rostral teeth, making them difficult to distinguish, and can thus be considered as cryptic species. In addition they have very similar distribution ranges, thus raising doubts as to their specific status. Discriminant function analysis of morphometric data, differentiation at 10 allozyme loci, and sequence data derived from the 12S rRNA mitochondrial gene were used to test whether specimens identified as P. latens and P. rotunda are morphological forms of a single, widespread species, or represent two, distinct, reproductively isolated species, and to establish whether these two taxa are sister species, and thus form a monophyletic entity. The presence of fixed allele differences at three, and strong genetic heterogeneity at five other allozyme loci, indicating no gene flow occurring between sympatric populations, as well as the relatively high degree of 12S rRNA and allozyme genetic differentiation observed, supported the recognition of P. latens and P. rotunda as separate species. The 12S rRNA topology suggested that the genus Pseudodromia , as presently constituted, is paraphyletic, thus inferring that the morphological characters used to define this taxon might not be useful for phylogenetic inferences. It was concluded that in view of the uncertainties raised regarding the designation and composition of certain genera within the family Dromiidae, further rigorous analyses of morphological and genetic data are needed to further our understanding of the taxonomy of the sponge crabs.  相似文献

A new species of pagurid hermit crab, Pagurus decimbranchiae, is described and illustrated based on 20 specimens collected from shallow waters of the Pacific coast of Japan ranging from Boso Peninsula to Tanegashima Island. It is quite distinctive in having the rudimentary arthrobranch on the third maxilliped represented by a single bud, however close morphological similarity is found between the new species and P. moluccensis Haig and Ball. Comparisons are also made among other species, including P. boriaustraliensis Morgan, P. sp. cf. boriaustraliensis sensu Rahayu and Komai (2000) and the members of the P. anachoretus group. The present generic assignment of the new species should be considered provisional, as more extensive study is needed to investigate phylogenetic relationships of the new species and the other species of Pagurus.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Lipid, glucose and glycogen concentrations were measured in different tissues of the crab Chasmagnathus granulata during emersion.
  • 2.2. After 6 hr of emersion no reduction in the total amount of carbohydrates was found to occur, suggesting that a general metabolic arrest was taking place.
  • 3.3. A transitory increase in haemolymphatic glucose and lipid levels was observed. Possible causes are therefore discussed in relation to changes in the flux of substrates for energy production.
  • 4.4. The mobilization of carbohydrates and lipids to the gills, observed only during summer, may be concerned with energy supplying for ionic regulation.

Summary Nitrite in the external freshwater medium was found to be toxic to Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana (48 h LC500.7 mM NO 2 ). It produced significant changes in haemolymph ionic concentration and acid-base status. Exposure to 1.0 mM NO 2 resulted in a rapid, active accumulation of nitrite in the haemolymph (to 25 mM NO 2 after 24 h) and caused the partial inhibition of Cl uptake. Some reduction in Cl efflux rate was seen. In 1.0 mM NO 2 a rapid depletion of haemolymph [Cl] was observed (50 mM decrease in 27 h). Nitrite competitively inhibited active Cl uptake (Km increased from 0.42 to 1.22 mM; Ki=0.45 mM). To achieve Cl balance in this medium, depleted crayfish would require a two-fold increase in external [Cl]. A lesser decrease in haemolymph [Na+] was found while osmotic pressure was relatively unaffected. Haemolymph [HCO 3 ] showed a significant increase and was accompanied, unexpectedly, by an acidosis. Possible sources of the excess HCO 3 , perhaps by inhibition of normal Cl/HCO 3 branchial exchange or release from CaCO3 stores, are discussed. Haemolymph clearance of NO 2 was slower than uptake as was the restoration of [Cl] on recovery in nitrite-free medium.Abbreviations AFWM artificial freshwater medium - BOD biochemical oxygen demand - J out Cl chloride efflux - J in Cl chloride influx - J in Cl chloride influx - J net base net base flux - J net base net base flux - J in(p) Cl passive chloride influx - J out efflux - LC 50 median lethal concentration - NEDE N-1-Naphthylethylenediamine - SEM standard error of mean - TEP transepithelial potential difference - V in Cl active chloride uptake  相似文献

The estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulatus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura) inhabits salt marshes along the South Atlantic coast from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to Patagonia (Argentina). In the present study, salinity tolerance (0-45‰; 16-1325 mOsm/kg H2O) and hemolymph osmotic and ionic (Na+, Cl, and K+) regulation in both female and male C. granulatus were analyzed in summer and winter. Results showed that both female and male C. granulatus are euryhaline. Mortality was only observed in extremely low salinity (0‰; 16 mOsm/kg H2O) for both sexes. For females, the LT50 at 0‰ salinity was similar in summer (20.1 h) and winter (17.4 h). Males were more tolerant to salinity than females in both seasons, and mortality was observed only in summer (LT50 = 50.9 h). Results from freshly collected crabs or long-term (16-day) osmotic and ionic regulation experiments in the laboratory showed that male C. granulatus is a better hyper-osmoregulator than female in summer and winter. However, a hypo-osmoregulatory ability was only observed in females experimentally subjected to salinity 40‰ (1176 ± 11 mOsm/kg H2O) in both seasons. In both sexes, hyper-osmotic regulation was achieved by hyper-regulating hemolymph Na+, Cl, and K+ concentration. In females, hypo-osmotic regulation was achieved by hypo-regulating hemolymph Na+ and Cl concentration. Long-term (16-day) osmotic and ionic regulations in different salinities were similar in males or females collected and tested in summer and winter. Despite this lack of a seasonal effect on hemolymph osmoregulatory and ionoregulatory patterns in males or females, a marked seasonal difference in the dynamics of these processes was observed for both sexes. In the first 2 days after hypo-osmotic shock (20‰→5‰; 636→185 mOsm/kg H2O), variations in female osmolality and ion (Na+ and Cl) concentration were larger and faster in winter than in summer, while in males the opposite was observed. Furthermore, a seasonal effect on the crab response to hyper-osmotic shock (20‰→40‰; 636→1176 mOsm/kg H2O) was only observed in males. A new osmolality and ion (Na+ and Cl) concentration steady state was faster achieved in winter than in summer. Regarding sexual differences, females showed a better capacity to hypo-regulate the hemolymph osmolality and Na+ concentration than males, even after a sudden increase in salinity (hyper-osmotic shock) in both seasons. On the other hand, males showed a better capacity to hyper-regulate the hemolymph osmolality and Na+ concentration than females, even after a sudden decrease in salinity (hypo-osmotic shock), especially in winter. Taken together, results reported in the present study suggest the need to consider both sex and collection season as important factors in future osmotic and ionic regulation studies in estuarine crabs.  相似文献
