Societies are considered in which a non-transitive dominance relation exists between every pair of members, such as the peck-right in a flock of hens. A one-dimensional measure of the structure of such a society,h, is defined, withh=0 for equality andh=1 for the hierarchy. It is assumed that each member of the society is characterized by an ability vector whose components depend on individual characteristics such as size, concentration of sex hormone, etc., but not on social factors such as social rank. The distribution of abilities among members of the society is assumed to be given by a distribution function which is the same for all members, and the probability that one member dominates another is given by a function of the ability vectors of the two. On these assumptions formulas for the expected (mean) value and variance ofh are determined in terms of the distribution and dominance probability functions. Some special cases are calculated, especially that for normany distributed abilities and dominance probability given by the normal probability integral. Several conclusions are derived. If all members are of equal ability, so that dominance probability is 1/2, then any sizable society is much more likely to be near the equality than the hierarchy; and, as the size of the society increases, the probability that it will be near the hierarchy becomes vanishingly small. If the dominance probability is a weighted sum of several independent components, which make up the ability vector, then the society is less likely to be close to the hierarchy as the number of these components increases. The hierarchy is the prevalent structure only if unreasonably small differences in ability are decisive for dominance. From this it appears that the social factors, or psychological factors such as the previous history of dominance, which are not included in the present treatment, may be of great importance in explaining the observed prevalence of structures very close to the hierarchy in flocks of domestic hens.  相似文献

Pseudopedinella pyriforme Carter displays a second non-emergent flagellum and vestigial anterior tentacles. The trailing rhizopodium is without supporting microtubules, and seemingly arises from a posterior vesicle apparently associated with the Golgi apparatus. Stalked pyrenoids, so far unreported for any other member of the Chrysophyceae, are demonstrated. The structure of P. pyriforme is compared with members of the Chrysophyceae and Craspedamonadales and its taxonomic position is discussed.  相似文献

A multidisciplinary strategy for discovery of new Conus venom peptides combines molecular genetics and phylogenetics with peptide chemistry and neuropharmacology. Here we describe application of this approach to the conantokin family of conopeptides targeting NMDA receptors. A new conantokin from Conus rolani, ConRl‐A, was identified using molecular phylogeny and subsequently synthesized and functionally characterized. ConRl‐A is a 24‐residue peptide containing three γ‐carboxyglutamic acid residues with a number of unique sequence features compared to conantokins previously characterized. The HPLC elution of ConRl‐A suggested that this peptide exists as two distinct, slowly exchanging conformers. ConRl‐A is predominantly helical (estimated helicity of 50%), both in the presence and absence of Ca++. The order of potency for blocking the four NMDA receptor subtypes by ConRl‐A was NR2B > NR2D > NR2A > NR2C. This peptide has a greater discrimination between NR2B and NR2C than any other ligand reported so far. In summary, ConRl‐A is a new member of the conantokin family that expands our understanding of structure/function of this group of peptidic ligands targeted to NMDA receptors. Thus, incorporating phylogeny in the discovery of novel ligands for the given family of ion channels or receptors is an efficient means of exploring the megadiverse group of peptides from the genus Conus. The toromere, a structure previously reported only in several strains of Drosophila melanogaster, is found in salivary gland nuclei of three populations of Drosophila lummei, a member of the virilis group. The toromere is characterized by being quinacrine-bright and Feulgen-positive. Further staining and enzyme digestion procedures reveal that the toromere is composed of double-stranded DNA with little or no protein complexed with it. The toromere appears as a small quinacrine-bright dot in diploid cells and apparently undergoes polytenization, as it is observed as a large quinacrine-bright doughnut-shaped structure in salivary gland preparations. We describe the effect of larval culture temperature on the morphology and number of toromeres per cell, and lend support to the proposal that the toromere could be a highly replicated episome.Deceased. Although the species has been known for more than 70 years, no published accounts have been made of the details of development of the reproductive structures ofBinghamia californica J. Ag., a member of the Rhodymeniales of limit d distribution in the eastern and western Pacific. The present studies indicate that there is a close relationship in vegetative structure and in the ontogeny of the reproductive structure toLomentaria, especially toL. hakodatensis Yendo. Confirmatory, corrective and new chromosome counts are listed for species in the genus Cheilanthes, and a new chromosome count is given for a member of the genus Aspidotis. An analysis of five collections of C. castanea revealed no significant morphological differences despite the different chromosome numbers. The ploidy level of all known species in genera of the Sinopteridaceae is summarized, revealing directions in which future research might proceed to complete our cytological knowledge of this family.  相似文献

The complete primary structure of the late lactation protein from the milk of quokka (Setonix brachyurus) is presented. The amino acid sequence was established by N-terminal sequence analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography purified intact protein and peptides isolated from chemical and enzymatic digests of the protein. The protein contains 158 residues including four cysteines. The sequence comparison with the tamar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) late lactation protein shows only five differences. The protein is identified as a new member of a novel late lactation protein family present in the milk of marsupials.  相似文献

Dengue remains one of the major public concerns as the virus eludes the immune response. Currently, no vaccines or antiviral therapeutics are available for dengue prevention or treatment. Immunosuppressive drug FK506 shows an antimalarial activity, and its molecular target, FK506‐binding protein (FKBP), was identified in human Plasmodium parasites. Likewise, a conserved FKBP family protein has also been identified in Aedes aegypti (AaFKBP12), which is expected to play a similar role in the life cycle of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of dengue virus infection. As FKBPs belong to a highly conserved class of immunophilin family and are involved in key biological regulations, they are considered as attractive pharmacological targets. In this study, we have determined the nuclear magnetic resonance solution structure of AaFKBP12, a novel FKBP member from Aedes aegypti, and presented its structural features, which may facilitate the design of potential inhibitory ligands against the dengue‐transmitting mosquitoes. SYNOPSIS An account is given of the member species of the Anopheles punctulatus Dönitz complex viz. A. punctulatus Dönitz, A. koliensis Owen, and 2 species previously recognised as A. farauti Laveran and which are now designated A. farauti No. 1 and A. farauti No. 2. Deltarhodopsin, a new member of the microbial rhodopsin family, functions as a light‐driven proton pump. Here, we report the three‐dimensional structure of deltarhodopsin (dR3) from Haloterrigena thermotolerans at 2.7 Å resolution. A crystal belonging to space group R32 (a, b = 111.71 Å, c = 198.25 Å) was obtained by the membrane fusion method. In this crystal, dR3 forms a trimeric structure as observed for bacteriorhodopsin (bR). Structural comparison of dR with bR showed that the inner part (the proton release and uptake pathways) is highly conserved. Meanwhile, residues in the protein–protein contact region are largely altered so that the diameter of the trimeric structure at the cytoplasmic side is noticeably larger in dR3. Unlike bR, dR3 possesses a helical segment at the C‐terminal region that fills the space between the AB and EF loops. A significant difference is also seen in the FG loop, which is one residue longer in dR3. Another peculiar property of dR3 is a highly crowded distribution of positively charged residues on the cytoplasmic surface, which may be relevant to a specific interaction with some cytoplasmic component.Proteins 2013; © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Bacterial cell walls are composed of the large cross‐linked macromolecule peptidoglycan, which maintains cell shape and is responsible for resisting osmotic stresses. This is a highly conserved structure and the target of numerous antibiotics. Obligate intracellular bacteria are an unusual group of organisms that have evolved to replicate exclusively within the cytoplasm or vacuole of a eukaryotic cell. They tend to have reduced amounts of peptidoglycan, likely due to the fact that their growth and division takes place within an osmotically protected environment, and also due to a drive to reduce activation of the host immune response. Of the two major groups of obligate intracellular bacteria, the cell wall has been much more extensively studied in the Chlamydiales than the Rickettsiales. Here, we present the first detailed analysis of the cell envelope of an important but neglected member of the Rickettsiales, Orientia tsutsugamushi. This bacterium was previously reported to completely lack peptidoglycan, but here we present evidence supporting the existence of a peptidoglycan‐like structure in Orientia, as well as an outer membrane containing a network of cross‐linked proteins, which together confer cell envelope stability. We find striking similarities to the unrelated Chlamydiales, suggesting convergent adaptation to an obligate intracellular lifestyle.  相似文献

Brugia malayi is a parasitic nematode that causes lymphatic filariasis in humans. Here the solution structure of the forkhead DNA binding domain of Brugia malayi DAF‐16a, a putative ortholog of Caenorhabditis elegans DAF‐16, is reported. It is believed to be the first structure of a forkhead or winged helix domain from an invertebrate. C. elegans DAF‐16 is involved in the insulin/IGF‐I signaling pathway and helps control metabolism, longevity, and development. Conservation of sequence and structure with human FOXO proteins suggests that B. malayi DAF‐16a is a member of the FOXO family of forkhead proteins. A new species,Paralepidapedon williamsi, is described from the fishCottunculus microps and an unidentified fish of the suborder Cottoidei in the NE Atlantic Ocean. This species is the first member of the genus to be recognized in the Atlantic Ocean. Its general morphology is similar to that of the other members of the genus, but it is distinguished by its large eggs and the relatively few gland-cells associated with the external seminal vesicle. The genusParalepidapedon, which differs fromNeolepidapedon in the possession of a uroproct, is reviewed and a key to the species given. The genus is considered to include five species.  相似文献

Pharyngodon medinae García-Calvente, 1948 (Nematoda: Pharyngodonidae) is redescribed from Podarcis pityusensis (Bosca, 1883) (Sauria: Lacertidae) of the Balearic Islands (Spain) and confirmed as a member of the genus Skrjabinodon Inglis, 1968. A systematic review of S. medinae and closely related species is also given. Parathelandros canariensis is referred to Skrjabinodon as a new combination and Parathelandros Magzoub et al., 1980 is dismissed as a junior homonym of Parathelandros Baylis, 1930.  相似文献

The mouse gene Punc encodes a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface proteins. It is highly expressed in the developing embryo in nervous system and limb buds. At mid-gestation, however, expression levels of Punc decrease sharply. To allow investigation of such a regulatory mechanism, the genomic locus encompassing the Punc gene was cloned, characterized, and mapped. Fluorescent in situ hybridization was used to determine the chromosomal location of the Punc gene of mouse and human. Mouse Punc maps to Chromosome (Chr) 9 in the region D-E1, whereas the human PUNC gene is localized to Chr 15 at 15q22.3-23, a region known to be syntenic to mouse 9D-E1. The human PUNC gene therefore maps close to a genetic locus that is linked to Bardet-Biedl Syndrome, an autosomal recessive human disorder. Confirmation for the location of human PUNC was obtained through sequence relationships between mouse Punc cDNA, human PUNC cDNA, genomic sequence upstream of the murine Punc gene, and human STS markers that had been previously mapped on Chr 15. The STS sequence WI-14920 is in fact derived from the 3′-untranslated region of the human PUNC gene. WI-14920 had been placed at 228cR from the top of the Chr 15 linkage group, which provided positional information for the human PUNC gene at high resolution. Thus, this study identifies PUNC as the gene corresponding to a previously anonymous marker and serves as a basis to investigate its role in genetic disorders. Platoma abbottiana (Gymnophlaeaceae; Gigartinales), a new species of benthic red algae, is described from Isla Mejía and is the second member of this genus reported from the Gulf of California, Mexico. Vegetative anatomy and reproductive details of the carpogonial and auxiliary cell branches of the new species are described and illustrated. Geographical distributions of the seven previously described Platoma species are given. Their distinguishing morphological characteristics are compared to those of the new species. The correct time and place of valid publication of the generic name, Platoma, and some of its binomials are discussed.  相似文献

Pericarp structure was investigated in 158 species of the familiesLamiaceae andVerbenaceae. Data from 221 out of 262 genera ofLamiaceae s.l. and a few ofVerbenaceae s.str. were collected in a table. A cladistic analysis was performed on the basis of pericarp characters only. The abandonment of subfam.Pogostemonoideae as a taxonomic unit is considered. Examples of groups given additional support by similarities in pericarp characters are: (1) the gynobasic-styled labiates (subfamiliesPogostemonoideae, Lamioideae, Nepetoideae); (2) aLamioideae-Pogostemonoideae-group; (3)Nepetoideae; (4) aWestringia-Hemigenia-Hemiandra-Microcorys group (in subfam.Chloranthoideae); (5) aLepechinia-Chaunostoma-group (inNepetoideae); (6) aPrunella-Cleonia-group (inNepetoideae).  相似文献

Synopsis Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is thought to play a fundamental role in the reproduction of cartilaginous fishes. The primary structures of the only form of GnRH in ratfish,Hydrolagus colliei, and one of four forms of GnRH in dogfish,Squalus acanthias, have recently been shown to be identical to a form originally isolated from birds (chicken GnRH-II). Phylogenetic studies indicate that this chicken GnRH-II molecule is the most highly conserved GnRH family member in vertebrates; it is present in animals from cartilaginous fishes to marsupials. However, the presence of four immunoreactive forms of GnRH inS. acanthias, but only one form inH. colliei suggests that the two subclasses of these species diverged a long time ago. Immunocytochemical localization of GnRH shows that it is found in the brains of all chondrichthyans examined to date. GnRH cell bodies and fibers were found in specific patterns throughout the brain in our studies of dogfish shark and black skate,Bathyraja kincaidii. The lack of immunoreactive GnRH fibers in the median eminence and the unique arrangement of the pituitary in Chondrichthyes suggest that transport of GnRH from the brain to the pituitary gonadotropes occurs in the systemic circulation. The use of this unconventional route is further supported by markedly higher levels of serum GnRH in ratfish compared with other vertebrates.  相似文献
