Establishment of shape during embryonic development, and the maintenance of shape against injury or tumorigenesis, requires constant coordination of cell behaviors toward the patterning needs of the host organism. Molecular cell biology and genetics have made great strides in understanding the mechanisms that regulate cell function. However, generalized rational control of shape is still largely beyond our current capabilities. Significant instructive signals function at long range to provide positional information and other cues to regulate organism-wide systems properties like anatomical polarity and size control. Is complex morphogenesis best understood as the emergent property of local cell interactions, or as the outcome of a computational process that is guided by a physically encoded map or template of the final goal state? Here I review recent data and molecular mechanisms relevant to morphogenetic fields: large-scale systems of physical properties that have been proposed to store patterning information during embryogenesis, regenerative repair, and cancer suppression that ultimately controls anatomy. Placing special emphasis on the role of endogenous bioelectric signals as an important component of the morphogenetic field, I speculate on novel approaches for the computational modeling and control of these fields with applications to synthetic biology, regenerative medicine, and evolutionary developmental biology.  相似文献

Background

Biogeographic patterns of species invasions hold important clues to solving the recalcitrant ‘who’, ‘where’, and ‘why’ questions of invasion biology, but the few existing studies make no attempt to distinguish alien floras (all non-native occurrences) from invasive floras (rapidly spreading species of significant management concern), nor have invasion biologists asked whether particular habitats are consistently invaded by species from particular regions.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here I describe the native floristic provenances of the 2629 alien plant taxa of the Eastern Deciduous Forest of the Eastern U.S. (EUS), and contrast these to the subset of 449 taxa that EUS management agencies have labeled ‘invasive’. Although EUS alien plants come from all global floristic regions, nearly half (45%) have native ranges that include central and northern Europe or the Mediterranean (39%). In contrast, EUS invasive species are most likely to come from East Asia (29%), a pattern that is magnified when the invasive pool is restricted to species that are native to a single floristic region (25% from East Asia, compared to only 11% from northern/central Europe and 2% from the Mediterranean). Moreover, East Asian invaders are mostly woody (56%, compared to just 23% of the total alien flora) and are significantly more likely to invade intact forests and riparian areas than European species, which dominate managed or disturbed ecosystems.

Conclusions/Significance

These patterns suggest that the often-invoked ‘imperialist dogma’ view of global invasions equating invasion events with the spread of European colonialism is at best a restricted framework for invasion in disturbed ecosystems. This view must be superseded by a biogeographic invasion theory that is explicitly habitat-specific and can explain why particular world biotas tend to dominate particular environments.  相似文献

The hypophase exchanger is a recently developed device that makes it possible to replace the liquid in the sample chamber of a pulsating bubble surfactometer, after a bubble has been formed, without changing the size of the bubble. A surfactant film outlining the bubble will retain its surface properties, provided the liquid entering the sample chamber and replacing the hypophase is inert. If, on the other hand, the new hypophase consists of a phospholipase solution, the physical properties of the film are seriously affected. It was found that when phospholipase C, even at low concentration, entered the sample chamber, the physical properties were significantly changed. Phospholipase A2 had to be added at a higher concentration to exert a similar effect. It is postulated that the site of action of phospholipase A2 may be partly protected in the hydrophobic region of the tightly packed surfactant film.  相似文献

Aim Sheetweb spiders (Araneae: Linyphiidae, subfamily Linyphiinae) exemplify a highly mobile group of farmland arthropods with very variable abundances in crops within and between years. Despite their dominance in crops during summer, they overwinter predominantly in perennial non‐crop habitats, and their densities in crops during spring should therefore depend on the amount of favourable overwintering habitat in the surrounding landscape. We tested the effect of landscape composition on sheetweb spider abundance with special attention to the range of their aerial dispersal and weather dependence. Location The study was carried out in 18 non‐overlapping landscape sectors of 3 km radius around the city of Göttingen (Germany), forming a gradient from structurally simple, with up to 85% arable land, to structurally complex, with high percentages of grassland and other non‐crop habitats. Methods Sheetweb spider abundances in winter wheat fields were sampled during May and June 2001–2003 with a distance method. They were related to landscape composition at 11 spatial scales between 95 and 3000 m radius around the study sites. Results In 2001 and 2003, spider abundances were enhanced by high percentages of non‐crop habitats in 1–3 km circumference (e.g. from 18 to 130 m?2 in late May 2001), and multiplied during consecutive sampling periods (e.g. from on average 36 to 131 m?2 between mid‐May and late June 2001). Spider abundances were constantly low and unrelated to the landscape context in 2002. In that year, immigration appeared to be inhibited by factors connected to exceptionally high amounts of rain during May. Main conclusions Sheetweb spiders responded to landscape composition up to several kilometres away and the effects varied between years, demonstrating the need to consider large space and time‐scales to understand their population dynamics. Semi‐natural habitats should be preserved to enhance these important natural enemies of crop pests in agricultural landscapes.  相似文献

Traditionally, the study of metric skeletal asymmetry has relied largely on univariate analyses, utilizing ratio transformations when the goal is comparing asymmetries in skeletal elements or populations of dissimilar dimensions. Under this approach, raw asymmetries are divided by a size marker, such as a bilateral average, in an attempt to produce size‐free asymmetry indices. Henceforth, this will be referred to as “controlling for size” (see Smith: Curr Anthropol 46 (2005) 249‐273). Ratios obtained in this manner often require further transformations to interpret the meaning and sources of asymmetry. This model frequently ignores the fundamental assumption of ratios: the relationship between the variables entered in the ratio must be isometric. Violations of this assumption can obscure existing asymmetries and render spurious results. In this study, we examined the performance of the classic indices in detecting and portraying the asymmetry patterns in four human appendicular bones and explored potential methodological alternatives. Examination of the ratio model revealed that it does not fulfill its intended goals in the bones examined, as the numerator and denominator are independent in all cases. The ratios also introduced strong biases in the comparisons between different elements and variables, generating spurious asymmetry patterns. Multivariate analyses strongly suggest that any transformation to control for overall size or variable range must be conducted before, rather than after, calculating the asymmetries. A combination of exploratory multivariate techniques, such as Principal Components Analysis, and confirmatory linear methods, such as regression and analysis of covariance, appear as a promising and powerful alternative to the use of ratios. The secondary (direct) body formation is a mechanism of development in which morphogenesis of various organs occurs directly from a mass of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells (blastema) without previous formation of germ layers. It is characteristic of the posterior end of the embryonic body, i.e. of the tail bud of tailless and the tail of tailed mammals. Development of the neural tube occurring by this mechanism (secondary neurulation) has been previously explained. We investigated the morphogenetic mechanism by which two other axial structures in the rat tail develop: the tail gut and the notochord. Both structures develop from an axial condensation of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells (tail cord) of tail bud origin. The tail gut forms in a similar way to the secondary neural tube: cells in the ventral part of the tail cord elongate, acquire an apicobasal polarity and form a rosette-like structure around a lumen in the centre. The notochord forms by detachment of a group of cells of the tail cord dorsally to the developing tail gut. The peculiarities of this morphogenetic mechanism in comparison with those in other parts of the embryo are discussed. Causal (including evolutionary) explanations of this mechanism are ruled out.  相似文献

Precursors of the tail of bacteriophage λ have been detected by measurements of in vitro complementation activities and serum blocking activity in sucrose gradients of lysates defective in tail genes.On the basis of these measurements, a pathway for the assembly of the λ tail is proposed:The morphogenesis of the λ tail starts from the tail fiber (product of gene J) located at the distal end of the tail, and proceeds to the proximal end. Gene J by itself produces a 15 S structure with serum blocking activity but without any detectable in vitro complementation activity, which may be the least advanced precursor of the λ tail or an abortive product. Functions of genes J, I, K, L are required for the formation of a 15 S precursor that has in vitro complementation activities with J, I, K and L lysates and serum blocking activity. If the products of genes G and H act on the latter 15 S precursor, a 25 S precursor is made, but this precursor seems either to be in equilibrium with the 15 S precursor or to degrade easily into the 15 S precursor. Gene M has a function of stabilizing the 25 S precursor. After the action of gene M product, the 25 S precursor is ready to serve as a nucleus on which the product of gene V (the major tail protein) assembles. However, gene U product is also necessary at this step for the correct assembly of the major tail protein on the 25 S precursor. Without gene U product the assembly of the major tail protein does not stop at the correct length and a polytail is formed instead of a morphologically normal tail. Finally, gene Z product acts on the morphologically normal tail and makes it a biologically active tail. Without the action of gene Z product, the defective tail binds to a head and forms a phage-like particle which is only very weakly infectious. (The position of gene T in the pathway is not determined, because no sus mutant is available in gene T.)Two abnormal, less efficient pathways are also present in vitro. (1) If gene U product acts on a polytail in an U lysate, the polytail finally binds to a head and forms a phage particle with an extra long tail which is infectious to a small extent. (2) The function of gene K seems to be bypassed to some extent: K lysates accumulate particles which sediment as fast as normal phage and which are complemented by other tail lysates.  相似文献

An experiment was designed to test the response of the nasal cavity and associated structures to maxillary deformity. Forty young M. mulatta were surgically produced in 20 animals, and the small maxillary segments moved medialward. Intrapair observation tests were applied to selected measurements and indices of symmetry relationships. Deformity of the surgically undisturbed nasal septum occurred in response to the maxillary deformation. The lateral walls were moved medially with the maxilla, but in six months symmetry relationships were similar to those found in the control animals. The lateral walls of the nasal cavity appeared to be relatively independent of the shape and position of the tooth carrying part of the maxilla. The development and use of primate models can contribute to understanding the extent of the adaptational response systems in facial morphogenesis.  相似文献
