Livestock grazing is a common management practise in semi-natural grasslands in Central Europe. Different types of livestock (horses, cattle, sheep) and grazing intensity are known to affect the richness and composition of plant species. However, knowledge of grazing-dependent effects on invertebrates is limited. We examined the influence of horse, cattle and sheep grazing on the richness, abundance and composition of land snail species in 21 calcareous nutrient-poor grassland areas in the northwestern Jura Mountains, Switzerland. Grazing by different livestock species did not affect the species richness, abundance and species composition of land snails. Furthermore, the number of open-land species and the ratio of large- to small-sized snail species or individuals did not differ among the three pasture types. However, independent of livestock species, grazing intensity negatively influenced the snail fauna. Snail species richness, abundance and number of Red list species decreased with increasing grazing intensity. Grazing intensity also affected the occurrence of individual snail species (Truncatellina cylindrica, Cecilioides acicula, Candidula unifasciata and Trichia plebeia). To preserve the snail fauna in nutrient-poor grasslands, pastures can be stocked with horses, cattle or sheep. However, both maximum stocking rate (number of livestock units per hectare) and grazing duration (number of grazing days per year) must be carefully defined for the proper management of the pastures.  相似文献

The fish fauna and its relationships with physiography and climate were studied in northwestern Argentina from 21°30′ S to 26°30′ S and 63°30′ W to 65°50′ W, an area about 10,276 km2. Along a southeast–northwest gradient, the Chaco forest at low altitudes gives way to the Yungas cloud forest in highlands, and then, to an increasing desertic landscape, with xerophytic vegetation and scarce rainfall along the Grande River. Finally, extreme desert conditions prevail in the most northern part at the Puna plateau. Water chemistry was sampled from sites from 400 to over 3800 m a.s.l. In all 3278 fish specimens of 52 species were collected. Previous lists included 84 species. Only 19 were shared, meaning that 40 species are new for the area and/or particular localities, including 7 reports from Aguas Calientes. These results increase by one third the number of species in northwestern Argentina. The fish fauna was represented by eurytopic species of Paranensean genera as Astyanax, Bryconamericus and other characoids, mixed with locally distributed siluriforms. Under extreme climatic conditions, species of Trichomycterus predominate. Species assemblages show a combination of a large number of species typical of, sometimes endemic to or rather abundant in, the area, combined with a few species of Paranensean character. Fish assemblages were clearly defined by faunistic composition and distribution related with physiography and climate traits. A significant negative correlation is observed between both species number and abundance, and increasing altitude, and positive relationships exist with mean annual temperature and other climate traits. Diversity values (Shannon index) agree with the described pattern of increasing impoverishment of the fish fauna of northwestern Argentina, along gradients of increasing altitude and dryness and decreasing temperature.A first version of this paper was submitted at the XXVII Congress of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae, Dublin, Ireland, 1998.  相似文献

Cladocera and Copepoda fauna, from ten lakes in the Alta water-course,northern Norway, have been collected and investigated. A totalof 42 species (34 Cladocera and 8 Copepoda) were recorded. Thenumber of Cladoceran species is high when compared with thatregistered for other areas of similar latitude, and Cladoceranspecies abundance is also greater than that reported for otherregions of northern and central Scandinavia. In addition, themean number of planktonic species present at any given timein the lakes (4.9 Cladocera and 3.4 Copepoda) was comparativelyhigh. Eight species have never been recorded as existing farthernorth than the Alta water-course, Three other species have beenrecorded at higher latitudes in North America, but not in Eurasia.Several species, of which there are only a few published records, arc rare in northern Scandinavia, and nine species were notconsidered by Illies (1978), as existing in the region of thepresent study.  相似文献

Abstract. The occurrence and abundance of indigenous plants with extrafloral nectaries was evaluated within local communities and regional floras along a north to south gradient from tundra in northeastern Russia (64–70°N) through temperate types in eastern Russia and Korea to subtropical vegetation in the Bonin Islands (26–27°N) south of Japan. Moving from tundra to subtropical vegetation, there is a pattern of increasing abundance of extrafloral bearing plants as a function of total plant cover (from 10.25 to 40.18%), number of species per sampled area (from 0.11 to 1.13/100 m), and proportion of species within regional floras (from 0.32 to 7.46%). There were some plants with extrafloral nectaries in all communities but their abundance varied greatly, c. 1–25% in the four northern latitudes and c. 7–70% in the subtropical region. Ants, the primary mutualists associated with plants bearing extrafloral nectaries, have a similar pattern of increasing abundance (species richness, nest density, and colony size) along the same north–south latitudinal gradient.  相似文献

A model simulating the regeneration, growth and death of trees and the consequent carbon and nitrogen dynamics of the forest ecosystem was applied to determine the effect of expected temperature rise on tree species composition and the accumulation of organic matter in the boreal forest ecosystem in Finland (between latitudes 60°–70° N). In the southern and middle boreal zones a temperature rise of 2–3° C (temperature for 2 x CO2) over a period of one hundred years increased the competitive capacity of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and birch species (Betula pendula and B. pubescens), and slowed down the invasion by Norway spruce (Picea abies). In the northern boreal zone a corresponding rise in temperature promoted the invasion of sites by Norway spruce. The accumulation of organic matter was promoted only slightly compared to that taking place in the current climatic conditions.A further doubling of temperature (temperature for 4 x CO2) over an additional period of two hundred years led to the replacement of coniferous stands with deciduous onesin the southern and middle boreal zones. In the northern boreal zone an admixture of coniferous and deciduous species replaced pure coniferous stands with the latter taking over sites formerly classified as tundra woodland. In the southern and middle boreal zones the replacement of coniferous species induced a substantial decrease in the amount of organic matter; this returned to its former level following the establishment of deciduous species. In the northern boreal zone there was no major change in the amount of organic matter such as occurred in the case of the tundra woodland where the amount of organic matter accumulated was nearly as high as in the northern boreal zone.  相似文献

Although it is common for ant surveys to uncover previously uncollected species, a recent study of subterranean ants in Amazonian Ecuador has indicated that an entire ant fauna may remain largely undiscovered. Here we report on the first systematic investigation of subterranean ants in northern Australia, in order to assess the extent to which the high abundance and diversity of subterranean ants in Amazonia is apparent in tropical Australia. We use a novel sampling technique that combines elements of an attractant bait and a pitfall trap, and allows many traps to be deployed simultaneously. Our main study was conducted at three closely approximated sites in Darwin, where the local ant fauna has been intensively surveyed using conventional (above-ground) sampling techniques. The 720 traps deployed resulted in 421 species records, representing 29 species from 17 genera. Sixteen of these species have cryptobiotic morphology, with four recorded here for the first time. Remarkably, one of these four (a blind species of Solenopsis) was the second most frequently caught species in subterranean traps, with 70 records. Ant abundance, species richness and composition varied markedly between sites, despite site similarity in soils and vegetation. Total ant records were greater in the middle compared with start of the wet season, declined with depth, and were greater after 4 days than one. Sampling at six sites in the Mitchell Falls area of the northern Kimberley region, 1,200 km southwest of Darwin, also revealed several cryptobiotic species new to science, including a new genus record (Pseudolasius) for Western Australia. Our underground sampling has therefore revealed an abundant and diverse subterranean ant fauna in northern Australia, containing many cryptobiotic species not previously collected. We use our results to provide methodological guidelines for most effectively sampling this fauna. Combined with the Amazonian study, our findings indicate that a specialist subterranean ant fauna, including numerous species remaining to be discovered, might be a feature of tropical landscapes throughout the world.  相似文献

We aimed to determine whether the copepod assemblages in lakes and ponds of northern Québec, Canada, were closer in composition to those found in southern Québec, or to those reported from the subarctic and arctic. Six calanoid and five cyclopoid species were identified from 37 ponds and lakes located in the region between 55° N and 59° N. Species diversity was generally low, ranging from 0 to 4 species per lake. Dominant species were Leptodiaptomus minutus and Acanthocyclops vernalis. The species assemblages showed high affinity with those found in forested regions of southern Québec. Exceptions were Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli, previously only recorded west of Hudson Bay, and Hesperodiaptomus arcticus, hitherto recorded north of 58° N. Relationships between the lakes, species, and environmental variables were explored using multivariate analysis. Lakes situated along the coast and on two offshore islands clustered together and were characterised by higher conductivity and pH than those lakes located further inland. Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli was common in these coastal lakes. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between copepod distributions and conductivity, dissolved organic carbon and pH. These three variables accounted for 70% of the variation in the species' distribution.  相似文献

Loch Lomond is the second largest body of freshwater in Great Britain. It is a long, narrow lake (36.4 km long, 8.8 km wide). The northern basin is fjord-like and surrounded by a mountainous, base-poor, rocky catchment. In contrast, the southern basin is much broader and shallower with a mainly lowland, calcareous, agricultural catchment. This causes a trophic gradient along the length of the loch that runs from the oligotrophic northern basin to the more mesotrophic southern basin. Rotifer samples were collected at monthly intervals between May and October 2002 at three locations along the length of the loch. More than 12 species were found, the commonest of which were Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) and Trichocerca stylata (Gosse). Although the species composition of the rotifer community varied very little among the sites, rotifer abundance increased markedly from north to south, apparently reflecting the trophic gradient along the length of the loch. The results suggest that rotifer abundance may be a more sensitive indicator of trophic state, and changes in trophic state, than species composition.  相似文献

Aim It is often assumed that species reach their highest densities in the centre of their ranges and decline in abundance toward the edges of the range. Implicit in this notion, which we call the abundant centre hypothesis, is the assumption that the edges of the range are more stressful to organisms and are more likely to show responses to climate change. However, an earlier review and empirical study of patterns of abundance across the range of intertidal invertebrates show little support for the abundant centre hypothesis and further demonstrated that few studies have examined patterns in either abundance or stress across species ranges. In part this gap is due to the logistical difficulties of sampling species across large geographical ranges. Here we use intertidal invertebrates, which have relatively simple linear latitudinal ranges, and heat‐shock proteins, which have been shown to be an integrative measure of organismal stress, to test the hypothesis that species are more stressed at the edges of their range. We use complementary data on population density to test the relationship between stress proteins and overall species density across the species’ range. Location Our sampling programme covered the southern half of the large geographical ranges of two intertidal invertebrates on the Pacific Coast of North America. Sites were spread between northern Baja California, Mexico and Vancouver Island, Canada, a range of c. 22 degrees of latitude. Method We sampled levels of heat‐shock protein 70 (Hsp70) in eight to 12 individuals from each of 20 sites for the intertidal mussel Mytilus californianus and 11 sites for the intertidal snail Nucella ostrina, spread throughout the southern half of their geographical ranges. The relationships between levels of Hsp70 in individuals from a site and (1) latitude of the site, (2) the site's position in the species’ range and (3) average population density were determined. Results No significant relationship was found in either species between levels of Hsp70 and latitude, position in the range or population density. Complex patterns that did emerge may be explained by nonlinear gradients in environmental conditions along the Pacific coast. Specifically, we observed peak values of Hsp70 for both species in northern Oregon, where intertidal zones are disproportionately exposed to daytime emersion (exposure to air) in the summer months of collections. A second peak for M. californianus was found south of Point Conception, California, which is marked by dramatic shifts toward warmer sea temperatures and decreased wave exposure. Main conclusions Patterns that emerged were not predicted by simple models based on the abundant centre hypothesis. However, they are consistent with more complex pictures of heat stress, organismal condition and abundance along a latitudinal gradient that have been demonstrated in recent studies. We suggest that latitudinal complexity, species‐specific differences and local effects must be considered before generalizing the relationship between environmental stress, abundance, range limits and responses of ranges to climate change.  相似文献

Gastropods Nucella heyseana were collected from 1999 to 2001 from different habitats in Vostok Bay (Sea of Japan). The spatial distribution, the seasonal and interannual dynamics, and the composition of aggregations of this mollusk were analyzed. In Vostok Bay, N. heyseana inhabits biotopes that are typical of this species and other members of the genus and sometimes forms aggregations with an unusually high density and biomass (up to 1690 spec/m2 and 3680 g/m2), thus exceeding 10–40 times the greatest values reported elsewhere for populations of the southern Kuril Islands and Pos'eta Bay (Sea of Japan). N. heyseana is a typical polyphagous predator, and its diet includes numerous species of the associated fauna of bivalve and gastropod mollusks (more than 30 species). The abundance, composition, and stability of local aggregations of N. heyseana are largely dependent on the abundance dynamics of its prey (primarily the most common species, such as Mytilus trossulus, Ruditapes philippinarum, Protothaca euglypta, and Littorina spp.). The opinion on the low density of N. heyseana in southern Primorye (Golikov, Kussakin, 1978) is probably based on a lack of information about the intertidal fauna of this region compared to the South Kuril Islands.  相似文献

We caught smolts of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., in a trap situated at the mouth of the river Halselva (70° N 23° E), northern Norway during a 5-year period. Salmon and charr were the first to leave freshwater at the end of May, while most trout left freshwater about 14 days later. Whereas the midnight sun shines continuously during the downstream migration period, the light intensity has a diel intensity pattern. The majority of the descending migrants were recorded during the night. The number of descending fish was relatively low at water temperatures below 3°C. The increase in water level was largely caused by snowmelt and thus correlated with lower water temperatures. The number of migrants of all three species increased with increasing water level and decreased with increasing water temperature, with the exception of trout, which increased with water temperature. Notably, the increase in number of migrants was also correlated with the increase in water level the following day, indicating that fish movements represent an early response to a later spate. There was no significant relationship between the number of migrants and the daily change in water level or temperature. The three species were highly synchronised in their daily number of migrants. The strongest synchronisation was found between Arctic charr and Atlantic salmon, followed by Arctic charr and brown trout.  相似文献

A quantitative study of collembolan assemblages on the Barents Sea coast of the Kola Peninsula was performed. Altogether, 104 collembolan species of 55 genera and 16 families were found. Analysis of the faunal composition revealed its high similarity to that of the faunas of the neighboring regions of Norway as well as a marked decline in species richness as compared to the Siberian analogues. A high share of littoral forms with increased vagility and the predominance of species with “southern” (= boreal) and “western” distribution patterns are the main characteristics of the fauna studied; only a few true arctic forms were found, always with low abundance and occurrence levels. Most of the studied collembolan assemblages are characterized by the dominance of a few species which inhabit a part of or the entire range of plant communities. As a result, collembolan assemblages under various types of vegetation cover in different landscape elements often show only insignificant differences.  相似文献

The habitat and diet choice and the infection (prevalence and abundance) of trophically transmitted parasites were compared in Arctic charr and brown trout living sympatrically in two lakes in northern Norway. Arctic charr were found in all main lake habitats, whereas the brown trout were almost exclusively found in the littoral zone. In both lakes the parasite fauna reflected the niche segregation between trout and charr. Surface insects were most common in the diet of trout, but transmit few parasites, and accordingly the brown trout had a relatively low diversity and abundance of parasites. Parasites transmitted by benthic prey such as Gammarus and insect larva, were common in both salmonid host species. Copepod transmitted parasites were much more common in Arctic charr, as brown trout did not include zooplankton in their diets. Parasite species that may use small fish as transport hosts, were far more abundant in piscivorous fish, especially brown trout. The seasonal dynamics in parasite infection were also consistent with the developments in the diet throughout the year. The study demonstrates that the structure of parasite communities of charr and the trout is highly dependent on shifts in habitat and diet of their hosts both on an annual base and through the ontogeny, in addition to the observed niche segregation between the two salmonid species.  相似文献

The following study was the first to describe composition and structure of the peracarid fauna systematically along a latitudinal transect off Victoria Land (Ross Sea, Antarctica). During the 19th Antarctic expedition of the Italian research vessel “Italica” in February 2004, macrobenthic samples were collected by means of a Rauschert dredge with a mesh size of 500 μm at depths between 85 and 515 m. The composition of peracarid crustaceans, especially Cumacea was investigated. Peracarida contributed 63% to the total abundance of the fauna. The peracarid samples were dominated by amphipods (66%), whereas cumaceans were represented with 7%. Previously, only 13 cumacean species were known, now the number of species recorded from the Ross Sea increased to 34. Thus, the cumacean fauna of the Ross Sea, which was regarded as the poorest in terms of species richness, has to be considered as equivalent to that of other high Antarctic areas. Most important cumacean families concerning abundance and species richness were Leuconidae, Nannastacidae, and Diastylidae. Cumacean diversity was lowest at the northernmost area (Cape Adare). At the area off Coulman Island, which is characterized by muddy sediment, diversity was highest. Diversity and species number were higher at the deeper stations and abundance increased with latitude. A review of the bathymetric distribution of the Cumacea from the Ross Sea reveals that most species distribute across the Antarctic continental shelf and slope. So far, only few deep-sea records justify the assumption of a shallow-water–deep-sea relationship in some species of Ross Sea Cumacea, which is discussed from an evolutionary point of view.  相似文献

Samples of cod from the subarctic fjord, Balsfjord, in Norway, were collected in spring, summer and autumn from spring 1986 to spring 1987. The macroparasite fauna was investigated for seasonality in prevalence, mean intensity and abundance. Anisakis simplex had maximum mean intensity and abundance in the autumn. Echinorhynchus gadi had minimum prevalence, mean intensity and abundance in the autumn, but this was not statistically significant. None of the remaining 11 species of parasites demonstrated seasonality according to our definition.  相似文献

The composition of the coastal fish fauna around Elephant Island (northern South Shetland Islands) was investigated during seven bottom trawl surveys of FRV “Walther Herwig”, FV “Polarstern” and FRV “Yuzhmorgeologiya” from 1981 to 1998. Low-Antarctic (or lesser or peri-Antarctic) fish species were the predominant element of the coastal fish fauna. Large-scale fishing from 1978 to 1981 reduced stock sizes of the most abundant species Champsocephalus gunnari and Notothenia rossii to the extent that only a small fraction of the initial stock remained. After the period of intensive fishing, Gobionotothen gibberifrons became the most abundant species around the island. The by-catch species, which had probably been less affected by harvesting, recovered by the end of the 1980s/beginning of the 1990s. Fish biomass was highest in the 100- to 400-m depth range. An MDS plot revealed the existence of five groups of species that overlapped in their distribution to some extent. One important factor that separated the five groups was depth. Other factors that might have been important in structuring the vertical distribution of the fish fauna, such as bottom topography and sediment type, could not be investigated. Species composition was dominated by a few abundant low-Antarctic species. In four of the five groups, G. gibberifrons was by far the most abundant species, after C. gunnari and N. rossii had been largely eliminated due to fishing. Only in the 100- to 200-m depth range was C. gunnari more abundant than G. gibberifrons. In the 400- to 500-m depth stratum, a high-Antarctic species, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, and Lepidonotothen squamifrons, a species of Patagonian origin which lacks antifreeze glycopeptides, gained some importance. Species richness showed a positive trend with increasing depth. Evenness and Hill's N1 index were highest in the shallowest and deepest depth strata. Hill's N2 index was lowest in depth strata 3 and 4, which had the most even distribution of the abundant fish species. Accepted: 21 May 2000  相似文献

We studied the role of red deer Cervus elaphus L. as ecosystem modifier in boreal forest (Tingvoll municipality, 62°52′ N, 8°20′ E, Norway), during early summer of 2001. The effect of grazing by red deer on ground beetles (Carabidae) abundance and diversity was investigated across a gradient of grazing pressures. We trapped ground beetles by pit-fall traps from three homogeneous winter grazing areas (ungrazed, medium grazed, heavily grazed). Bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus (the main winter food for red deer) was sampled and its dry weight was measured for the three locations. Gradient analyses showed that grazing by red deer affects carabid species composition. Grazing significantly affected the amount of bilberry, which correlated with species variation. According to our predictions, we found a higher abundance of carabids in the heavily grazed location, but the species richness and the diversity indices were similar for the three areas. This study shows that overall species composition is altered along a gradient as consequence of red deer winter grazing and that red deer act as ecosystem engineer, by reducing the bilberry heather which dominates the field layer in early summer.  相似文献

The species composition of peracarids (Crustacea: Malacostraca) of the Greenland shelf between 60°N and 65°N was investigated by means of 10 qualitative epibenthic samples in relation to environmental factors. In total, 59,234 specimens were collected belonging to 219 species. The relative abundance was much higher on the western shelf (total of 41,594 specimens) than on the eastern shelf (total of 17,640 specimens with same effort). Three species were new to science, while five records were new for the investigated area. The species composition was dominated by amphipods (58%), while the relative abundances of isopods (25%), cumaceans (11%) and tanaidaceans (6%) were much lower. Diversity and evenness were similar in the eastern and the western areas. Multivariate analyses of the species relative abundances divided the peracarids into a southeastern and southwestern Greenland fauna. Based on a correlation analysis between faunal data and five environmental variables, the separation between the two areas was mainly based on sediment type. Species contributing most to the separation between eastern and western fauna included the amphipods Hardametopa nasuta, Photis reinhardi and Phoxocephalus holboelli, the isopods Pleurogonium spinosissimum, Iolella laciniata and Nannoniscus oblongus and the cumaceans Leucon cf. nasicoides and Campylaspis horrida. Species distribution patterns are discussed in the light of habitat and feeding preferences.  相似文献

Information about the large-scale zooplankton distribution in the Nansen Basin, that part of the Arctic Ocean most directly influenced by the inflow of Atlantic Water, is still scarce. During the Polarstern expedition ARK IV/3 in July/August 1987 zooplankton from the upper 500 m was sampled along two transects across the western Nansen Basin. Spatial variations in faunal composition, abundance, and biomass are described. Special emphasis is given to the distribution patterns and possible drifting routes of species advected into the Arctic Ocean through Fram Strait. Forty-five species and eight taxa not determined to species level were identified. Copepods clearly dominate in terms of species number, abundance, and biomass. Ostracods and chaetognaths comprise the most important groups of the non-copepod zooplankton. Maximum species numbers were recorded over the abyssal plain around 83°N. Total abundance and biomass decreased by more than 80% towards the northern part of the basin. Cluster analysis revealed two major faunal assemblages, broadly overlapping over the central Nansen Basin, and three principal types of spatial distribution. The well-defined zonation observed in the large-scale zooplankton distribution closely resembles the major hydrographic and topographic features. The opposite movement of the Polar Surface Water and the Atlantic Water in the southern Nansen Basin might cause pronounced deviations between the drifting routes of species with different water mass preferences advected through Fram Strait.  相似文献
