Climate warming may lead to changes in the trophic structure and diversity of shallow lakes as a combined effect of increased temperature and salinity and likely increased strength of trophic interactions. We investigated the potential effects of temperature, salinity and fish on the plant-associated macroinvertebrate community by introducing artificial plants in eight comparable shallow brackish lakes located in two climatic regions of contrasting temperature: cold-temperate and Mediterranean. In both regions, lakes covered a salinity gradient from freshwater to oligohaline waters. We undertook day and night-time sampling of macroinvertebrates associated with the artificial plants and fish and free-swimming macroinvertebrate predators within artificial plants and in pelagic areas. Our results showed marked differences in the trophic structure between cold and warm shallow lakes. Plant-associated macroinvertebrates and free-swimming macroinvertebrate predators were more abundant and the communities richer in species in the cold compared to the warm climate, most probably as a result of differences in fish predation pressure. Submerged plants in warm brackish lakes did not seem to counteract the effect of fish predation on macroinvertebrates to the same extent as in temperate freshwater lakes, since small fish were abundant and tended to aggregate within the macrophytes. The richness and abundance of most plant-associated macroinvertebrate taxa decreased with salinity. Despite the lower densities of plant-associated macroinvertebrates in the Mediterranean lakes, periphyton biomass was lower than in cold temperate systems, a fact that was mainly attributed to grazing and disturbance by fish. Our results suggest that, if the current process of warming entails higher chances of shallow lakes becoming warmer and more saline, climatic change may result in a decrease in macroinvertebrate species richness and abundance in shallow lakes.  相似文献

Juvenile freshwater and anadromous inconnu Stenodus leucichthys regulated plasma ions following a direct transfer from fresh to brackish water (10–15‰), but suffered osmoregulatory collapse with 100% mortality in 48 h when directly transferred to 25‰ salinity. Acclimation to brackish water for 2 weeks improved hypo-osmoregulatory capacity in both populations, with acclimated fish showing smaller increases in blood plasma ion concentrations, higher Na+-K+ ATPase activity, and lower mortality than non-acclimated fish following transfer to 25‰ sea water. Anadromous inconnu maintained pre-treatment plasma ion levels during acclimation, whereas these levels increased during acclimation in freshwater inconnu. Juvenile anadromous inconnu are therefore able to adapt physiologically to sea water of at least 25‰, if brackish-water acclimation is available, but freshwater inconnu have diminished saltwater tolerance, relative to the anadromous form.  相似文献

Contracaecum sp. larvae (L3) from fish were identified using nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacers ITS-1 and ITS-2 of the ribosomal DNA. The nematode larvae originated from fish in a freshwater situation (crucian carp Carassius carassius, from Selment Wielki Lake in Mazury, northeastern Poland) and a brackish-water region (Caspian round goby Neogobius melanostomus from the Baltic Sea, Gdafisk Bay at the Polish coast). Two strains (Contracaecum rudolphii A and B) of Contracaecum rudolphii senso lato, a parasite common at the adult stage in fish-eating birds, were identified. In fish from the freshwater site, only the strain temporarily designated C. rudolphii B was identified; in the brackish-water region, both strains were found, suggesting that fish serve as paratenic host for both genotypes. Contracaecum rudolphii sensu lato has been recorded in several species of fish-eating birds in Poland, particularly in the great cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo, in which the abundance is highest. The results, although based on a restricted number of larvae, suggest that the life cycles of both genotypes can be completed in the Polish region and that at least one of them, C. rudolphii B, can develop both in fresh and brackish water.  相似文献

In the Schelde continuum, a succession in the phytoplankton community is observed along the transition from the river to the freshwater tidal reaches of the estuary and from the freshwater to brackish reaches of the estuary. The goal of this study was to experimentally evaluate the contribution of changes in salinity and light climate to this succession. In summer 2000 and in spring 2001, phytoplankton communities from the river, the freshwater tidal reaches and the brackish reaches of the estuary were incubated under high or low light intensities and exposed to a change in salinity. HPLC analysis was used to evaluate the response of different algal groups to changes in light intensity and salinity. When incubated at a light intensity corresponding to the mean underwater light intensity of the freshwater tidal reaches, growth of phytoplankton from the river as well as from freshwater tidal reaches was significantly lower than when incubated at a light intensity corresponding to the mean underwater light intensity of the river. The phytoplankton community from the freshwater tidal reaches did not appear to be better adapted to low light intensities than the phytoplankton community from the river. Although diatoms were expected to be less sensitive to a reduction in light intensity than green algae, the opposite response was observed. Freshwater and brackish water phytoplankton were negatively affected by respectively an increase or decrease in salinity. However, the effect of salinity was not strong enough to explain the disappearance of freshwater and brackish water phytoplankton between a salinity of 0.5 and 10 psu, suggesting that other factors also play a role. In the freshwater phytoplankton communities from the river and the freshwater tidal reaches, green algae and diatoms responded in a similar way to an increase in salinity. In the brackish water phytoplankton community, fucoxanthin displayed a different response to salinity than lutein and chlorophyll a.  相似文献

The spread of non-native Rio Grande cichlids (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) in southeast Louisiana includes brackish habitats. We studied the effects of three different salinity levels on the biology of juvenile H. cyanoguttatus for 13 months to determine the potential of this species to spread through local estuaries. The highest salinity tolerated was 30.0 psu, and these fish did not survive acclimation to the 32 psu treatment. Fish in brackish conditions grew slower than fish in freshwater conditions, indicating a potential long-term detriment to juvenile fish living in brackish conditions. Aggression levels were notably higher for fish in brackish (15 psu) vs. freshwater conditions. This persisted through the entire experiment even after acclimation back to freshwater. This study indicates that higher salinity habitats in Louisiana can be tolerated by this species. It also raises a question about the effect of higher salinities on aggressive behavior.  相似文献

Patos Lagoon is located off the southern Brazilian coast and represents one of the largest coastal lagoons in the world. We estimated hydrological and physicochemical conditions associated with spatial variation in the abundance and diversity of freshwater fishes along the lagoon, and inter-annual variability in abundances of freshwater fishes occurring in its estuarine zone. During our study, the region experienced two periods of average rainfall and two periods with above-average rainfall. The characids Astyanax eigenmaniorum and Oligosarcus jenynsii and the siluriform Parapimelodus nigribarbis were the most abundant freshwater fishes in the estuary during wet periods when water levels were higher and salinity was lower. Increases in abundance of these species in the estuarine area, all of which members of primary-division freshwater families, apparently were associated with pulses of reproduction and passive transport from freshwater habitats located near middle and upper lagoon reaches. Abundance of species from secondary freshwater families, such as poeciliids and cichlids, were less correlated with hydrological conditions, and their patterns of occurrence in the estuary suggest active migration from nearby freshwater habitats draining into this area. Findings indicate that freshwater discharge in the basin and expansion/retraction of freshwaters in the middle-upper lagoon determined patterns of freshwater fish abundance and species richness in the estuarine zone.  相似文献

Although the sperm of externally fertilizing fishes usually has a brief life span of up to a few minutes, this study showed that the sperm of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus moved for several hours in brackish water and up to at least 10 h in the presence of ovarian fluid. Three-spined sticklebacks were able to spawn in waters ranging from full-strength sea water to fresh water, an ability unusual among fishes. The influence of salinity on sperm motility was examined, using three-spined sticklebacks from sea (salinity 30), brackish (5·5) and freshwater (0) populations. All three populations were found to have sperm with long motility periods in brackish water, lasting 165–270 min. Seawater three-spined sticklebacks had sperm motile for up to 65 min in sea water, whereas sperm from fresh- and brackish-water fish were quiescent in this medium. In fresh water, sperm from all three populations showed a very brief motility period, lasting <60 s. The presence of ovarian fluid, however, prolonged the motility period of sperm from both fresh- and brackish-water three-spined sticklebacks, for up to 7 and 10 h in fresh and brackish water, respectively, with some sperm found to be motile for up to 24 h. The results indicated that ovarian fluid created a favourable environment for the sperm and might have facilitated the three-spined sticklebacks' successful penetration of fresh water.  相似文献

It is hypothesized that fish larvae undertake vertical movements in estuarine waters. To test this hypothesis, a sampling period was selected during times when many spring‐spawning fish reach maximum abundance in coastal waters so that spring and summer variations in larval fish assemblages could be determined in the Yangtze River estuary. Six oceanographic surveys were conducted across the salinity gradient of an inshore (freshwater) and offshore area (brackish intersection) during spring (May) and summer (August) between 2010 and 2012. The fish larval community was dominated by species of Engraulidae, Gobiidae, Champsodontidae and Mugilidae. The pre‐flexion and flexion larval stages of euryhaline marine species, which are dependent on estuaries as nursery areas, were common. The brackish and marine larval assemblage was the most abundant with taxa such as Coilia mystus and Engraulis japonicus accounting for more than 57.3% of the total catch. Spatial differences in the taxonomic composition of larval fish assemblages were evident between the inshore and offshore areas. Additionally, the Yangtze River runoff regulatory functions as affected by the Three Gorges Reservoir operational mode (hydrological alternating operations) showed weak influences on fish and habitat environments. Low salinities from high freshwater inflow limited bay anchovy production in the inshore area.  相似文献

Fertilization and development in salmonids occurs almost exclusively within freshwater environments (< 1 ppt). A less common life history strategy in this group of fishes is the brackish-water resident life history, where entire life cycles occur in brackish water (> 1 ppt). In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that differences in rearing environment (fresh or brackish water) results in significant differences in the ability of lake trout to ionoregulate when faced with a salinity challenge later in life. To test this, genetically similar lake trout were fertilized and raised at either 0 or 5 ppt saltwater. At approximately 240 days post hatch, lake trout from both rearing environments were acutely transferred to 20 ppt salt water or their respective rearing environments as a control. Individuals were sampled at time 0, 1, 7, and 14 days post transfer. Fish raised in 5 ppt transferred to 20 ppt saltwater had significantly higher gill Na+ K+-ATPase activity, gill Na+ K+-ATPase α1b expression, and lower plasma osmolality when compared to freshwater reared lake trout transferred to 20 ppt across various time points. Additionally, the 5 ppt control treatment had greater overall aerobic scope than 0 ppt control fish and those transferred from 0 ppt to 20 ppt. These data imply that populations exhibiting a brackish-water resident life history, as has been observed in Arctic Canada, may have an advantage over freshwater reared conspecifics when foraging in marine influenced environments and colonizing new locations in coastal regions.  相似文献

The interaction between an organism and its environment is a major determinant of an individual’s growth rate, longevity, and fitness. Such interactions and resultant variation in growth is particularly prevalent in salmonids where a diversity of life history types and morphotypes can be observed within a single ecosystem. Lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, are typically considered freshwater residents. However, three life history types within the Husky Lakes estuary and connected lakes, NWT were recently documented, including semi-anadromous, brackish-water resident, and freshwater resident. To understand how use of brackish-water environments influences growth and longevity in lake trout, we assessed otolith increment widths, as a proxy for annual fish growth, and age-at- capture among life history types. Assessment of increments indicated that growth increased in brackish water for semi-anadromous lake trout, and that growth was faster for semi-anadromous and brackish-water residents than for freshwater residents (70 mm larger on average at age 15). In addition, age at capture was significantly older in brackish-water residents (3.8 years older) when compared to the other life histories. Together these results indicate that life in brackish water can have positive effects on growth and longevity for lake trout.

The effects of nutrients on the biological structure of brackish and freshwater lakes were compared. Quantitative analysis of late summer fish, zooplankton, mysid and macrophyte populations was undertaken in 20–36 shallow brackish lakes of various trophic states and the findings compared with a similar analysis of shallow freshwater lakes based on either sampling (fish) or existing data (zooplankton, mysids and macrophytes). Special emphasis was placed on differences in pelagic top-down control. Whereas the fish biomass (CPUE, multiple mesh-size gill nets) rose with increasing P-concentration in freshwater lakes, that of brackish lakes was markedly reduced at P-concentrations above ca. 0.4 mg P l-1 and there was a concomitant shift to exclusive dominance by the small sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus and Pungitius pungitius); as a result, fish density remained relatively high. Mysids (Neomysis integer) were found at a salinity greater than 0.5 and increased substantially with increasing P-concentration, reaching levels as high as 13 ind. l-1. This is in contrast to the carnivorous zooplankton of freshwater lakes, which are most abundant at intermediate P levels. The efficient algal controller, Daphnia was only found at a salinity below 2 and N. integer in lakes with a salinity above 0.5. Above 2 the filter-feeding zooplankton were usually dominated by the less efficient algal controllers Eurytemora and Acartia. In contrast to freshwater lakes, no shift to a clearwater state was found in eutrophic brackish lakes when submerged macrophytes became abundant. We conclude that predation pressure on zooplankton is higher and algal grazing capacity lower in brackish eutrophic-hypertrophic lakes than in comparable freshwater lakes, and that the differences in trophic structure of brackish and freshwater lakes have major implications for the measures available to reduce the recovery period following a reduction in nutrient loading. From the point of view of top-down control, the salinity threshold dividing freshwater and brackish lakes is much lower than the conventionally defined 5.  相似文献

In brackish water the variety of marine and freshwater parasite species is considerably reduced. The distribution in brackish water of most marine endoparasites is restricted by the salinity tolerance of their hosts, most of the parasite species are more tolerant than their hosts. The influence of salinity and temperature on nine species has been examined; first stage larvae of Contracaecum aduncum develop in 0-32‰ salinity; Cryptocotyle lingua proved to be infective at salinities down to 4‰. The greatest resistance was found in Anisakis larvae from herring Clupea harengus , which survived for more than half a year. Parasites in the fish intestines appear to be unaffected by changing water salinities, as the osmolarity in the intestines stays nearly constant. Marine ectoparasites ( Acanthochondria depressa, Lepeophtheirus pectoralis ) survive about three times longer than freshwater species ( Piscicola geometra, Argulus foliaceus ) when salinity is 16‰. High temperature increases the effects of adverse salinities on parasites. There is evidence that none of these ecto-parasitic species can develop within the range of 7-20‰ salinity.  相似文献

We investigated the distributional patterns of shallow-water fish and their environmental correlates along a broad spatial scale encompassing estuarine and freshwater ecosystems. Marine-vagrant species were restricted to the sites under the influence of salinity intrusion, whereas estuarine-related and freshwater guilds were found along the entire estuarine–freshwater gradient. Primary- and secondary-freshwater fish guilds had the most widespread spatial distribution and comprised a major fraction of the total abundance and species richness. Abiotic factors correlated with fish abundance and composition along two main environmental axes, one related with variation in salinity, water transparency, and sediment granulometry and the other with the slope gradient. Species richness was significantly higher at the natural channel linking the estuarine- and freshwater-ecosystem, which probably was due to: (a) a steeper slope that favored the confluence of fish from the littoral (<2 m) and limnetic (>2 m) zones and (b) the sporadic inflow of saltwater that carried into this region several marine-related species. Although estuarine–freshwater ecotones are known to support few species, mainly salinity tolerant, our results suggest that habitat features and seasonal fish movement associated with salinity intrusion could lead to more diverse fish assemblages in this transitional zone.  相似文献

Accelerated sea-level rise is expected to cause the salinization of freshwater wetlands, but the responses to salinity of the availability of soil phosphorus (P) and of microbial genes involved in the cycling of P remain unexplored. We conducted a field experiment to investigate the effects of salinity on P cycling by soil microbial communities and their regulatory roles on P availability in coastal freshwater and brackish wetlands. Salinity was positively correlated with P availability, with higher concentrations of labile P but lower concentrations of moderately labile P in the brackish wetland. The diversity and richness of microbial communities involved in P cycling were higher in the brackish wetland than the freshwater wetland. Salinity substantially altered the composition of the P-cycling microbial community, in which those of the brackish wetland were separated from those of the freshwater wetland. Metagenomic sequence analysis indicated that functional genes involved in the solubilization of inorganic P and the subsequent transport and regulation of P were more abundant in coastal soils. The relative abundances of most of the target genes differed between the wetlands, with higher abundances of P-solubilization (gcd and ppa) and -mineralization (phoD, phy, and ugpQ) genes and lower abundances of P-transport genes (pstB, ugpA, ugpB, ugpE, and pit) in the brackish wetland. A significant positive correlation between the concentration of labile P and the abundances of the target genes suggested that salinity may, at least in part, improve P availability by regulating the P-cycling microbial community. Our results suggest that the P-cycling microbial community abundance and P availability respond positively to moderate increases in salinity by promoting the microbial solubilization and mineralization of soil P. Changes in microbial communities and microbially mediated P cycling may represent microbial strategies to adapt to moderate salinity levels, which in turn control soil function and nutrient balance.  相似文献

An aquarium containing a portion of freshly collected brackish-water sediment from Nivå Bay (Øresund, Baltic Sea) was sampled to determine the species of amoebae present and refilled with inorganic salt medium to achieve freshwater salinity. After 2 months incubation, the diversity of amoebae was again studied, and the salinity was restored to the original level. The aquarium was incubated for a further 2 months and the amoeba fauna was studied for the last time. A number of freshwater species appeared in the sample after the first salinity shift, while some marine species disappeared. Most marine species did not re-appear after the salinity in the aquarium was restored, but one marine species not noted previously was recorded. The experiment illustrates the presence of ‘cryptic diversity’ of amoebae in natural habitats and demonstrates that laboratory manipulation of the salinity of a sample prior to inoculation may achieve an increased recovery of species from a brackish-water habitat.  相似文献

During the 1960s, water management practices resulted in the conversion of the wetlands that fringe northeastern Florida Bay (USA) from freshwater/oligohaline herbaceous marshes to dwarf red mangrove forests. Coincident with this conversion were several ecological changes to Florida Bay’s fauna, including reductions in the abundances of top trophic-level consumers: piscivorous fishes, alligators, crocodiles, and wading birds. Because these taxa rely on a common forage base of small demersal fishes, food stress has been implicated as playing a role in their respective declines. In the present study, we monitored the demersal fishes seasonally at six sites over an 8-year time period. During monitoring, extremely high rainfall conditions occurred over a 3.5-year period leading to salinity regimes that can be viewed as “windows” to the area’s natural past and future restored states. In this paper, we: (1) examine the changes in fish communities over the 8-year study period and relate them to measured changes in salinity; (2) make comparisons among marine, brackish and freshwater demersal fish communities in terms of species composition, density, and biomass; and (3) discuss several implications of our findings in light of the intended and unintended water management changes that are planned or underway as part of Everglades restoration. Results suggest the reduction in freshwater flow to Florida Bay over the last several decades has reduced demersal fish populations, and thus prey availability for apex consumers in the coastal wetlands compared to the pre-drainage inferred standard. Furthermore, greater discharge of freshwater toward Florida Bay may result in the re-establishment of pre-1960s fauna, including a more robust demersal-fish community that should prompt increases in populations of several important predatory species.  相似文献

Species-rich communities of brackish-water plathelminths of the European continental coast and of the north American Atlantic coast are known to be most similar. In contrast nothing has been recorded about a possible settlement of corresponding faunal elements between the continents on volcanic islands which were covered by glaciers in the Pleistocene. At the Faroe Islands 2 freshwater species, 11 marine-euryhaline species and 12 genuine brackish-water organisms were found in minute brackish-water biotopes with highly variable salinity. Macrostomum curvituba Luther, Minona baltica Karling & Kinnader and Coronhelmis lutheri Ax are the most abundant species. Several brackish-water plathelminths are able to tolerate freshwater conditions. Most probably they have evolved mechanisms which are comparable to those of limnetic organisms allowing long distance transport across the sea in an inactive state.  相似文献

The freshwater fish assemblage in most estuaries is not as species rich as the marine assemblage in the same systems. Coupled with this differential richness is an apparent inability by most freshwater fish species to penetrate estuarine zones that are mesohaline (salinity: 5·0–17·9), polyhaline (salinity: 18·0–29·9) or euhaline (salinity: 30·0–39·9). The reason why mesohaline waters are avoided by most freshwater fishes is difficult to explain from a physiological perspective as many of these species would be isosmotic within this salinity range. Perhaps, a key to the poor penetration of estuarine waters by freshwater taxa is an inability to develop chloride cells in gill filament epithelia, as well as a lack of other osmoregulatory adaptations present in euryhaline fishes. Only a few freshwater fish species, especially some of those belonging to the family Cichlidae, have become fully euryhaline and have successfully occupied a wide range of estuaries, sometimes even dominating in hyperhaline systems (salinity 40+). Indeed, this review found that there are few fish species that can be termed holohaline (i.e. capable of occupying waters with a salinity range of 0–100+) and, of these taxa, there is a disproportionally high number of freshwater species (e.g. Cyprinodon variegatus, Oreochromis mossambicus and Sarotherodon melanotheron). Factors such as increased competition for food and higher predation rates by piscivorous fishes and birds may also play an important role in the low species richness and abundance of freshwater taxa in estuaries. Added to this is the relatively low species richness of freshwater fishes in river catchments when compared with the normally higher diversity of marine fish species for potential estuarine colonization from the adjacent coastal waters. The almost complete absence of freshwater fish larvae from the estuarine ichthyoplankton further reinforces the poor representation of this guild within these systems. An explanation as to why more freshwater fish species have not become euryhaline and occupied a wide range of estuaries similar to their marine counterparts is probably due to a combination of the above described factors, with physiological restrictions pertaining to limited salinity tolerances probably playing the most important role.  相似文献

Fifty specimens each of bream Abramis brama and roach Rutilus rutilus were examined for metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates; 25 specimens of each species were collected from the Kiel Canal, a man-made waterway, and a nearby freshwater lake, the Dieksee. This is the first detailed parasitological examination of A. brama and R. rutilus at these locations: 30 parasite species were found, comprising 4 protozoans, 4 myxozoans, 5 digeneans, 3 monogeneans, 2 cestodes, 6 nematodes, 2 acanthocephalans, 3 crustaceans and 1 hirudinean. The crustacean Caligus lacustris occurred in both habitats while 2 other crustacean species, 2 acanthocephalans and 1 hirudinean were recorded exclusively for the lake habitat. Larval as well as adult stages of the different parasite species were found, indicating that both fish species act as intermediate and final hosts in both habitats. The Kiel Canal (total of 17 parasite species) showed a lower parasite species richness for A. brama and R. rutilus (14 and 10 parasite species, respectively) than the lake (25 parasite species). A. brama had a higher parasite richness (22 species) than R. rutilus (16 species) in the lake habitat. Most parasites collected were of freshwater origin. Consequently, the observed infection pattern of both fish species in the waterway is mainly influenced by the limited salinity tolerance of freshwater parasites, which are negatively affected even by a salinity of 2.3 to 4.5. In the central Kiel Canal, neither fish species was infected with marine parasites of low host specifity. These parasites are either limited by the low salinity at this sampling site (<4.5 to 6.0) or they cannot enter the canal due to the environmental conditions prevailing in this artificial brackish water habitat. Thus, the canal may comprise a natural barrier preventing the distribution of North Sea parasites into the Baltic Sea. However, the brackish water Baltic Sea nematodes Paracuaria adunca and Cosmocephalus obvelatus were found in R. rutilus from the canal, demonstrating the ability of some parasite species to invade and extend their range of distribution through this man-made shipping route from the Baltic to the North Sea.  相似文献
