Freshly embryonated eggs of Heterakis gallinarum gathered from naturally infected domestic turkeys and chickens developed the first 4 weeks essentially as well in young wild turkeys as in domestic poults, but then became progressively retarded and failed in most birds to result in females with fertile eggs. There was no significant difference in the prevalence or progress of infections with Histomonas meleagridis in the two kinds of turkeys, both of which differed from chickens only in that the latter had neither liver involvement nor mortality. In a second test, heterakids hatched from eggs stored 5-6 months at 4 C (comparable to overwintering) sustained very heavy losses in all birds, with greatly accelerated liberations of H. meleagridis, Few worms reached maturity and still fewer produced fertile eggs. In turkeys, and especially in wild turkeys, replacement of infective stages was so poor, that these birds were of no importance in contaminating the soil.  相似文献

1. The incidence of broodiness was four times as high among turkey hens fed a complete control diet than among hens allowed to self-select their diet from two different feed sources, one being relatively high in protein and the other relatively high in energy (i.e. split-diet). 2. Among non-broody birds, hens fed the split-diet had a significantly lower serum prolactin concentration in the third month of production as compared to control hens. 3. Hens in their second season of egg production had significantly lower serum luteinizing hormone concentrations during the latter stages of egg production than did first season hens.  相似文献

The factors influencing the egg size of the Red-billed Gull Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus were studied at Kaikoura, New Zealand, between 1964 and 1972. In two- and three-egg clutches there was a trend for the eggs to become smaller in the sequence of laying. Length, breadth and volume of eggs of one-, two- and three-egg clutches declined significantly as the season progressed. The size of eggs from single-egg clutches tended to be smaller than eggs from two-egg clutches laid at the same time. There were correlations between the proportions of one-egg and of three-egg clutches being laid at a given period and the mean egg volume of two-egg clutches. When the mean egg volume of two-egg clutches increased there was a corresponding increase in the proportion of two- and three-egg clutches laid. When the mean egg volume of two-egg clutches decreased there was an increase in the proportion of single-egg clutches laid. The egg size of the Red-billed Gull showed no direct correlation with the abundance or availability of food; the largest eggs were produced early in the season when food was in short supply. In spite of an increase in the food supply in the middle of the breeding season, birds laying at this time produced smaller eggs than birds which laid earlier in the season. However, early breeders which relayed at the peak in food abundance on average produced a larger replacement clutch than originals laid early in the season. It is suggested that the birds nesting early in the season are able to produce the largest eggs because they are the most efficient foragers for food, and those which nest later in the season produce smaller eggs, even at peak food abundance, because of their inefficiency or inexperience. Early breeders laying replacement clutches tended to lay larger eggs and larger clutches than birds which are producing their first clutches at the same time. Two-year-old females laid eggs which were significantly shorter than older aged birds while the breadth and volume of the egg increased with the age of the female up to the fifth year. There was a trend for females to lay larger eggs when mated with older rather than younger males. No statistical differences in egg size were detected between females changing or retaining the partner of the previous season. Female body weight and egg volume were positively correlated in females weighing less than 275 g but not for heavier females. It is suggested that the seasonal decline in egg size and clutch size results from a decrease in the availability of food and the ability of the individual to exploit the resource.  相似文献

The effects of aflatoxin on egg production, fertility, hatchability, and progeny performance were investigated by feeding dietary aflatoxin at dose levels of 0,5, and 10 mug/g to mature broiler breeder hens for 4 weeks. Sixteen hens were used for each dietary dose level. Egg production decreased significantly during weeks 3 and 4 after initiation of toxin feeding for hens fed 10 and 5 mum of aflatoxin per g of diet respectively. Whereas fertility was not affected by dietary aflatoxin, hatchability of fertile eggs decreased significantly within week 1 of toxin feeding. Hatchability of fertile eggs collected during week 1 of the treatment period was 95.1, 68.9, and 48.5% for the control, 5- and 10-mug/g groups, respectively. At the dose levels used in this study, no latent effects of the aflatoxin or its metabolites were observed on the performance of surviving chicks. Six hens from each experimental groups were necropsied at the end of the 4-week treatment period. These birds exhibited typical symptoms of aflatoxicosis, including enlarged, fatty and friable livers, and enlarged spleens.  相似文献

We studied the breeding biology of the Redwing Francolin, Francolinus levaillantii, in the highland grasslands of Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, from 1995–1996. The breeding season is from August to March. Clutches were incubated by hens only and all nests were located in rank grass close to surface water. Mean clutch size was 4.3 eggs (S.D. = 0.78, n = 10) and mean egg dimensions were 40.1 × 32.3 mm (S.D. = 1.07 and 0.81, n = 44). Hatching success was 83.7% and clutch survival rate to 22 days of incubation was 82.8%. A mean of 3 chicks was produced per clutch; observed mean production (counts of hens with chicks) was 2.6 chicks per brood (n = 24 clutches; 62 chicks). The hunting season for Redwing Francolin in Mpumalanga should be from 15 April to 15 July.  相似文献

Glucocorticoids circulating in breeding birds during egg production accumulate within eggs, and may provide a potent form of maternal effect on offspring phenotype. However, whether these steroids affect offspring development remains unclear. Here, we employed a non-invasive technique that experimentally elevated the maternal transfer of corticosterone to eggs in a wild population of house wrens. Feeding corticosterone-injected mealworms to free-living females prior to and during egg production increased the number of eggs that females produced and increased corticosterone concentrations in egg yolks. This treatment also resulted in an increase in the amount of yolk allocated to eggs. Offspring hatching from these eggs begged for food at a higher rate than control offspring and eventually attained increased prefledging body condition, a trait predictive of their probability of recruitment as breeding adults in the study population. Our results indicate that an increase in maternal glucocorticoids within the physiological range can enhance maternal investment and offspring development.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Among wild birds, females expressing a male-like phenotype have rarely been documented. During a study of Bobolinks ( Dolichonyx oryzivorus ) in Vermont, I observed a female that changed secondary sexually selected plumage forms between breeding seasons. During the 2006 breeding season, I monitored an individually marked female Bobolink in typical alternate plumage, with a light brown back and yellow undersides. This female produced a clutch of four eggs, and two young eventually fledged. In 2007, this female returned to the same area with predominately male alternate plumage, including black wing and body feathers, buff nuchal collar, and white scapulars and rump. She laid and incubated five eggs for 21 d before abandoning the nest; none of the eggs were fertile. I banded 324 additional female Bobolinks from 2002 to 2007 in the same study area and none exhibited similar between-year changes in plumage. In addition, a review of the literature revealed no previous reports of such changes. The male-like plumage and loss of fertility by the female Bobolink may have been due to an infection that damaged the left ovary, increasing androgen production and reducing estrogen production in the right ovotestis.  相似文献

Most of the 14 million hectares of pastures of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) planted in the United States are infected with the endophytic fungus, Neotyphodium coenophialum. I examined whether the consumption of fescue seed infected with this fungus had an adverse impact on reproduction in birds. Chickens were used as the model; they were maintained on a diet of chick starter mixed in equal amounts with either infected fescue seed (fungus-fed chickens) or uninfected fescue seed (control chickens). Consumption of infected fescue seed slowed the growth rates of female chicks but not males. Fungus-fed hens gained weight more slowly than control hens and also produced fewer eggs. Egg weight and fertility were similar in both groups of hens. Fungus-fed hens were more likely than control hens to produce eggs which lacked a shell. Naive hens exhibited an aversion for infected fescue seed when the seed was first presented to them, but the aversion disappeared after the hens were placed on a diet which included fescue seed for 3 or 6 months. Hens did not discriminate between feed containing infected seed and feed containing uninfected seed.  相似文献

While avian chronic haemoparasite infections induce reproductive costs, infection has not previously been shown to affect survival. Here, we experimentally reduced, through medication, the intensity of infection by Haemoproteus parasites in wild-breeding female blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus. However, this treatment did not reduce the intensity of infection in males or the intensity of infection by Leucocytozoon. Medicated females, but not males, showed increased local survival until the next breeding season compared with control birds. To our knowledge, this is the first empirical evidence showing long-term direct survival costs of chronic Haemoproteus infections in wild birds.  相似文献

FACTORS AFFECTING BREEDING OF RAZORBILLS ALCA TORDA ON SKOKHOLM   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
CLARE S. LLOYD 《Ibis》1979,121(2):165-176
A study of the breeding biology of the Razorbill was carried out on Skokholm (South Wales) during 1971-73. Birds ringed or colour ringed before the study began provided additional information upon the effects of age on breeding. Mean laying date was delayed in 1972, compared with 1971; the effect is attributed chiefly to stormy weather which upset colony attendance. Eggs were also smaller in 1972. A seasonal decline in egg size (volume) was noted in all three years, attributed mainly to the later laying of young birds. Egg size increased with age, at least up to the fifteenth year. Eggs lost totalled 30% of those laid; 73% of this total was due to predation by Herring Gulls and of Jackdaws. Most losses (45%) occurred during the first 10 days after laying. Of lost eggs, 25% were replaced, usually 14 days after the loss of the original; only eggs laid and lost early in the season could be replaced. Only 7% of the chicks which hatched failed to fledge. Most (62.5%) chick losses occurred in the first week of nestling life, when chick weight was related to egg size. Afterwards, both growth rate and fledging weight were independent of egg size. The chicks fledging early in the season were heavier than later chicks. Failure to fledge was mainly due to a breakdown in behaviour between parent and young, rather than to predation. Breeding success was highest for birds breeding early in the season, most of which were older, more experienced breeders. These laid early enough to replace an egg if it was lost; they produced large eggs, and their chicks were therefore both heavier than average during the critical first 7–10 days of life, and fledged at a high weight. Thus experience accumulated with age, and the ability to lay early in the season are important for successful breeding in the Razorbill.  相似文献

The serologic response of Rio Grande wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) to Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) was determined. Free-ranging turkeys were caught in southern Texas, shipped to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and housed in isolation facilities. Fourteen birds were exposed to MG, by intratracheal and intranasal inoculation. Eight birds received sterile broth only. Two wk prior to the end of the experiment, MG exposed turkeys were stressed by challenge with a serologically unrelated mycoplasma. Serum from all exposed birds reacted positively for MG antibody by the rapid plate agglutination (RPA) procedure within 2 mo postexposure (PE) and all but one remained positive for 14 mo PE. Less than one half of the exposed birds developed positive MG antibody titers detectable by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test within 2 mo PE, and by 10 mo PE, none had positive titers. Antibody was detected by the HI test in two of 11 infected turkeys, 14 mo PE, and titers increased significantly within 2 wk. MG was isolated from tracheal swabs from two infected birds 2 mo PE, but attempts thereafter failed. However, at the termination of the experiment 15 mo later, MG was isolated from lung tissue of three of 11 exposed turkeys and from a blood clot found in the lower trachea of one bird.  相似文献

We determined the prevalence and intensity of blood parasites in breeding gray catbirds (Dumatella carolinensis) at Killbuck Wildlife Area in Wayne and Holmes Counties, Ohio (USA) from June through August 2000. Of 98 catbirds sampled, 40 (40.8%) had detectable infections of Haemoproteus beckeri. Overall prevalence of H. beckeri in this population is high relative to that reported in earlier blood parasite surveys of both breeding and migrant catbirds. Mean intensity of H. beckeri infection did not vary significantly between young and old birds or among sampling periods. We found no effect of age on prevalence or intensity of H. beckeri infection. Older birds were not more likely to be infected than younger birds, despite longer exposure to arthropod vectors. Prevalence varied significantly with season and was highest in June and lowest in August. This pattern also was observed in older birds sampled repeatedly. This seasonal variation may reflect both newly acquired infections and chronic infections relapsing in response to hormonal changes associated with breeding. Evidence of transmission was observed in the single hatching year bird that lacked detectable infection in early summer, but demonstrated a very high intensity infection in late summer. These observations provide supportive evidence that hematozoa infections are acquired on the breeding grounds during the first year of life and relapse during the breeding season in subsequent years.  相似文献

Females of the subsocial shield bug Parastrachia japonensis (Heteroptera: Parastrachiidae) incorporate trophic eggs (nutritive eggs) into their egg mass. Considerable variation occurs among females in trophic egg number and the proportion of an egg mass that is composed of trophic eggs. Because trophic eggs are essential to the development and survival of young, this variation could significantly impact female fitness. We tested the hypothesis that trophic egg abundance is induced by maternal phenotype (weight, body size) and resource exposure. We predicted that resource limitations would cause females to produce fewer fertile eggs and more trophic eggs and that larger and heavier females would produce more of each egg type. Females ovipositing early in the season are exposed to different resource conditions than those that oviposit late. Thus, we compared egg production patterns between these two groups and several other factors related to nesting. No correlation was seen between body size and trophic egg abundance, or, indeed, egg production, overall; however, heavier females produced heavier egg masses. Counter to our prediction, late females, which had greater access to food, produced significantly more total eggs, fewer fertile eggs, and more trophic eggs than early females. A binomial generalized linear model analysis indicated that the factors most correlated with the percentage of an egg mass destined to become trophic eggs were resource abundance, resulting from early or late oviposition, and distance of the nest from the host tree, with closer females producing more trophic eggs. The findings support our hypothesis that resource availability and, to a lesser extent, maternal phenotype affect trophic egg abundance.  相似文献

Seasonal variation in egg-laying, egg size, hatching success, hatchling mass, fledging success and chick growth of Roseate Terms Sterna dougallii breeding on Aride Island (Seychelles), Indian Ocean, were studied in 1997 and 1998. I investigated to what extent two patterns, common in a range of species, were followed by tropical Roseate Terns: (a) seasonal decrease in clutch size, egg size and breeding success and (b) an increase in breeding success with increasing egg weight. In 1997 (a poor year), the earliest nesting birds laid significantly smaller eggs, and chicks were lighter at hatching than those of peak nesting birds. The mean clutch size, of 1.04 eggs, showed no seasonal variation and no 'b'-eggs hatched. In 1998 (a good year) the earliest nesting birds laid eggs of similar size and their chicks were of similar weight to those of peak nesting birds. Mean clutch size, of 1.25 eggs, increased significantly through the season and about 60% of the 'b'-eggs hatched. In 1997, hatching success was 57% whereas in 1998 it was 80%. In both years, breeding success declined significantly through the season. The fact that the earliest breeding birds laid smaller eggs in a poor year and smaller clutches in a good year is in marked contrast to a range of other species, and to temperate-nesting Roseate Terns. Egg volume explained about half of the variance in hatchling mass in both years, but only 15% of the variation in linear growth rate. Hatching date was the only variable with a significant effect on fledging success. Roseate Terns on Aride seemed to sacrifice egg size and clutch size for earliness of laying. Presumably it is a strategy of older birds to lay as early as possible and may be regarded as a response of tropical Roseate Terns to breeding under relatively poor, and seasonally declining, food conditions.  相似文献

Pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and malaria and related haemosporidians provoke negative effects on the fitness of their hosts. Animals have developed a range of defensive mechanisms to resist or eliminate these parasitic infections and their negative fitness costs. The uropygial gland secretion has been proposed to act as defensive barrier of skin and plumage in the fight against bacteria and fungi, and may prevent birds from acquiring haemosporidian infections. Thus, the secretion of uropygial glands of birds may favour survival of individuals. However, whether uropygial gland secretion influence survival remains unknown. Here we explore if the size of the uropygial gland and malaria infection influence survival of house martins Delichon urbica. We showed, for the first time, that the volume of the uropygial gland positively predicted survival prospects of malaria infected house martins. Malaria infected birds had the lowest probability of survival, with the effect of gland size on survival prospects depending on infection: infected house martins with larger uropygial glands were better able to survive to the next breeding season, while infected birds with small uropygial glands were not. These results highlight the importance of uropygial gland secretion in the life history of wild birds.  相似文献

Hens were infected with a wild-type Salmonella enteritidis and its wzz mutant, which lacked the ability to make high-molecular-mass lipopolysaccharide (LPS), in six experiments paired by dosage and route of exposure. Involution of the reproductive tract occurred in 86% of hens that were injected subcutaneously with 108 cfu of the wild-type strain, but none did so when injected with the wzz mutant. In spite of the lack of a specific effect on the reproductive tract, infection of hens with the mutant produced more contaminated eggs and heterophilic granulomas in developing ova (yolks) than wild type; thus, overall, the mutant appeared to be more virulent except after intravenous injection. The mutant also decreased shell quality more often than wild type, regardless of dosage or route of infection. These results suggest that egg-contaminating Salmonella enteritidis that produces high-molecular-mass LPS mitigates signs of illness in poultry by altering the response of the avian reproductive tract to infection, but without altering the incidence of egg contamination following bacteraemia. Further research is warranted to determine whether analyses of shell quality might aid in identification of flocks at risk of producing contaminated eggs.  相似文献

The total population of Eiders at the Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve, Aberdeenshire, increased from about 3000 birds during 1961–63 to about 4800 birds in 1964–70. At the same time the estimated number of breeding pairs increased from about 1200 in 1961–63, to about 1800 in 1965–68 and to 2000 in 1970. The mean size of completed clutches was 4.4; the number of eggs in a clutch showed a significant decline during the season from an average of 4.7 to 3.4 in most years. The overall hatching success was 63%, but there was a decline with season as a result of increased losses to predators. In 1964 and 1969 laying was retarded, mean clutch-size reduced, and the number of birds attempting to lay dropped by half, due to inclement weather just at the onset of laying. In 1969 the eggs produced were smaller than in other years, and hatching success was lower. The female incubates without feeding, and is required to store sufficient energy, in the form of fat, to last her through the 26 days in addition to producing her clutch of eggs. An hypothesis is advanced which relates the feeding efficiency of the paired female immediately prior to laying to her egg production and incubating pattern, and which offers an explanation of the decline in clutch-size and hatching success evident during the season. In most years less than 5% of hatchlings survived to fledge; high survival was recorded in 1963, 1968 and 1970. Following the high production in 1963 the population increased in 1964 and the breeding stock in 1965 (females start to breed at two years old). The corresponding changes, following good breeding in 1968, were not so clearly detected because of unusually high adult mortality from oil pollution at the winter grounds in 1968 and the ‘late’ breeding year in 1969. The breeding stock in 1970, however, was higher than in any other year. This population continues to grow apparently as a result of its own reproductive output checked only by low productivity in most years and occasional high adult mortality.  相似文献

Studies on the development and egg production of Capillaria hepatica and on the macroscopically visible alterations of the liver and spleen of the host were carried out in experimentally infected Mastomys natalensis. Following the oral administration of infective eggs the first stage larvae hatched in the caecum of fasting and fed animals after about 8 and 15 hours respectively. The prepatency could be found with 20 days. The dynamics and duration of egg production of the parasite proved to be dependent on the infective dose. After the first week of patency increasing numbers of eggs/liver were found with increasing doses of infection up to 800 eggs per animal. This relation could not be observed 76 days post infection. After infections with 50, 300 und 800 eggs per animal maximum egg production was found between 60 and 72, 36 and 48 and about 30 days p.i., respectively. The egg production of the parasites correspondently continued for more than 85 days after infection or had ceased 72 or 48 days p.i. Intraperitoneal administration of infective eggs revealed a lower infection rate, evaluated by the number of eggs per liver, than oral infection.  相似文献

The breeding performance of captive willow ptarmigan on different diets has been studied. The nutritional factors tested were protein concentration, natural feed supplement and grass meal and flavonoid admixture, and effects on egg numbers, fertility, hatchability, chick weights at hatching and 0–14 days mortality have been recorded. The breeding performance of ptarmigan hen in captivity showed great individual variations. Egg numbers were not statistically different in groups fed the different diets. Hens fed a 15 % crude protein died tended to produce smaller chicks with significantly lower viability than chicks from hens fed a 20 % crude protein diet. Supplement of natural feed tended to increase the number of chicks hatched through a combination of tendency to higher egg numbers and improved fertility. These tendencies were, however, statistically nonsignificant. Inclusion of 34 % grass meal to the diet also tended (non-significantly) to improve fertility and hatchability, while inclusion of flavonoids had no positive effect on reproduction. Eggs from captive hens showed significantly lower fertility, and a tendency to lower hatchability than eggs from wild hens. The former difference was probably caused by the close cage confinements for the captive ptarmigan, while the latter condition probably was due to different start of incubation, most of the eggs from wild hens being started naturally.  相似文献
