Cryptosporidium oocysts were inoculated into fresh dung (∼1.2 × 104 oocysts per gram wet weight) and fed to dung beetles to assess the effect of dung burial by the dung beetle Bubas bison on the distribution of the oocysts in small cores of soil in the laboratory. The experiment consisted of five replicates of each of two treatments; controls (dung but no dung beetles) and the experimental treatment (inoculated dung and seven pairs of dung beetles). After 5 days, when approximately 90% of the dung was buried, the surface and buried dung was recovered and subsampled. The oocysts in the subsamples were recovered and enumerated using qPCR. Oocyst viability was evaluated using an assay based on the exclusion or inclusion of two fluorogenic vital dyes, 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and propidium iodide (PI). Results revealed that overall 13.7% of oocysts remained on the surface and 86.3% of oocysts were buried. The viability of oocysts in buried dung was only 10% compared to oocysts the surface dung (58%). Therefore, widespread dung burial by B. bison during the winter months could substantially reduce the numbers of Cryptosporidium oocysts available to be washed into waterways following winter rains. 相似文献

Emergent trees may have an influence on the volume and the spatial distribution of water input into agroforestry stands and may thus affect water availability for the main crops. Our goal was to analyze the influence of such trees on rainfall distribution in a cacao agroforest area in the rainforest margin zone of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The emergent trees studied belong to the species Bischofia javanica (Phyllanthaceae) and were 15 m high remnants from the natural forest. A set of 96 throughfall gauges was systematically distributed underneath canopies of cacao only, and underneath canopies of cacao plus emergent trees (cacao plus trees). The abundance and diversity of phytoseiid mites were surveyed from April to September 2003 to 2005 in vineyards (Grenache
and Syrah cultivars) co-planted with rows of Sorbus domestica or Pinus pinea and in monoculture plots of grapes in the South of France. Densities of phytoseiid mites were different on the two tree species,
with P. pinea a more suitable host than S. domestica. Typhlodromus (Typhlodromus) exhilaratus was the dominant species occurring on grapes and on co-planted rows of S. domestica and P. pinea, whereas T. (T.) phialatus was the most abundant species in monoculture plots of both S. domestica and P. pinea. Factors determining the dominance of T. (T.) phialatus over T. (T.) exhilaratus in monoculture trees are discussed. In this study, agroforestry management did not affect phytoseiid diversity in vineyards,
but did affect phytoseiid density, especially in 2005. The results obtained in 2003 and 2004 are not easy to discuss in this
regard because of the low densities of mites observed during these 2 years (very dry climatic conditions and pesticide applications). 相似文献

The effect ofAphodius sphacelatus andA. ater activity in cattle faeces andSphaeridium bipustulatum in sheep and horse faeces on the discharge ofPilobolus sporangia was investigated under laboratory conditions. In five trials, the median number of sporangia produced was significantly
less (P<0.01) in experimental chambers (with 1 or 2 beetles/g faeces) than in control chambers (without beetles). In addition, median
percentage reduction of sporangia was significantly higher (P<0.01) forA. sphacelatus (80.9%) than forA. ater (56.9%) at 1 beetle/g cattle faeces.

Use of 50 × 500 mm non-woven fiber bands impregnated with cultures of entomopathogenic fungi was investigated for control of Anoplophora glabripennis. Fungal bands produced as a commercial pest control product and obtained from industry contained Beauveria brongniartii NBL 851 while lab-produced bands contained B. brongniartii WU 20 or Metarhizium anisopliae VD 1. In the laboratory, adult longevity decreased when adult A. glabripennis were forced to walk for 5 s on bands impregnated with B. brongniartii NBL 851 and for 25 s on B. brongniartii WU 20 and M. anisopliae VD 1 bands. A field experiment was conducted over a 31-day period in Huaiyuan, Anhui, China, by attaching bands impregnated with B. brongniartii NBL 851 or WU 20 around the trunks of willows (Salix sp.) at two sites infested with A. glabripennis. Treatments were compared directly, by monitoring adult longevity, and indirectly, by counting oviposition scars and exit holes per tree to quantify relative oviposition per female. Adults collected from trees treated with B. brongniartii WU 20 died more quickly than adults from the trees treated with B. brongniartii NBL 851 or controls. At the site with higher A. glabripennis population densities, relative oviposition per female was significantly lower for both fungal treatments compared with the control treatment. Between fungal treatments, B. brongniartii NBL 851 had a 5 day earlier negative effect on oviposition per female than B. brongniartii WU 20. 相似文献

Suitability of exotic and native lady beetle eggs (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) for development of lady beetle larvae 总被引:8,自引:1,他引:8
Predation upon lady beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) eggs in the field is most often instances of egg cannibalism by larvae or adults while the majority of the remaining predation events upon coccinellid eggs is done by other species of Coccinellidae. Thus the recent introduction and establishment of Harmonia axyridis in the US could negatively affect native species of Coccinellidae via egg predation. However, little is known regarding the suitability of interspecific coccinellid eggs as a food source for larval development. In this study, it was found that native first or third instar Coleomegilla maculata and Olla v-nigrum larvae were incapable of surviving to the adult stage when provided solely exotic H. axyridis eggs. In stark contrast, H. axyridis larvae survived equally well when cannibalizing eggs or eating eggs of either native species. When C. maculata and O. v-nigrum were grouped as ‘native’ and compared with the exotic H. axyridis, more native eggs were attacked than exotic eggs and a higher percentage of eggs was attacked by H. axyridis larvae. Native and exotic larvae attacked a similar percentage of native eggs but native larvae attacked significantly fewer exotic eggs than did exotic larvae. These data suggest that H. axyridis may prey upon the eggs of these native species, when encountered in the field, compared with the likelihood of the native species preying upon H. axyridis eggs. Therefore, eggs of the native species C. maculata and O. v-nigrum will continue to be subjected to cannibalism and also to possible predation by other native species and the exotic H. axyridis. 相似文献

I present quantitative and qualitative data on infant caretaking behaviors collected during a preliminary field study of spectral
tarsiers (Tarsius spectrum),in a northern Sulawesi rain forest. The primary goal of the study is to identify the basic pattern of infant care in this
species. I studied tarsiers at Tangkoko-Dua Saudara Nature Reserve in Sulawesi, Indonesia, from May to July 1992. I observed
two infants, from two groups for a total of 96 hr using focal follows. During individual focal follows, ranging from 20 min
to 6 hr, I recorded behaviors at 5-min intervals. I also recorded distances of group members relative to the infant at 5-min
intervals. I subsampled the data at 35-min intervals to control for statistical autocorrelation between data points. Infants
were alone between 40 and 50% of the time. The two subadults were more frequently in proximity to the infant than the adult
males, the nonmatemal adult female, or the mothers were. This pattern of the subadults maintaining proximity to the infant
continued when the mothers were absent. These results suggest that subadults may be guarding or babysitting infants. It is
also possible that subadults are not traveling as far from the sleeping site as adults do and are therefore more likely to

Phylogenetic relationships within the Grimmiaceae/Ptychomitriaceae were studied using a plastid tRNA cluster, including four tRNAs (trnS, trnT, trnL, trnF), a fast evolving gene (rps4), four spacers separating the coding regions, as well as one group I intron. Secondary structure analyses of the spacers as well as the trnL intron P8 domain identified several homoplastic inversions. Tracing the structural evolution of P8 we were able to identify lineage specific modifications that are mainly explained by inversions often in combination with large indel events. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods indicate that Jaffueliobryum and Indusiella are closely related to Ptychomitrium and form the Ptychomitriaceae s. str. As Campylostelium is neither resolved within Ptychomitriaceae s. str. nor Grimmiaceae s. str., we prefer to treat it in its own family, Campylosteliaceae De Not. The systematic position of Glyphomitrium, as also found by other authors, should be considered in a broader analysis of haplolepidous mosses as our analyses indicate that it is not part of Campylosteliaceae, Grimmiaceae, or Ptychomitriaceae. Within Grimmiaceae s. str., Racomitrium is recognized as a monophyletic group sister to a clade including Dryptodon, Grimmia, and Schistidium. Coscinodon species appear disperse in Grimmia s. str. next to species sharing the same gametophyte morphology, and thus the genus is synonymized with Grimmia. Finally, Schistidium is resolved monophyletic with high statistical support, and seems to represent a rapidly evolving group of species. Our results are not fully congruent with recently published treatments splitting Grimmiaceae in a fairly high number of genera, neither with a comprehensive Grimmia including Dryptodon and Grimmia s. str. 相似文献

Habitat preferences of the tree pipit (Anthus trivialis) and the meadow pipit (A. pratensis; Passeriformes: Motacillidae) were observed during the years 1998–1999 at three localities in the Czech Republic; two with one pipit species only, and a third with both species present. We investigated one of the possible mechanisms allowing syntopic coexistence—different habitat selection. We characterised territories of each pipit pair by the habitats present in the territory (defined by dominant plant composition) and by quantitative parameters (territory size, height and density of the vegetation, number of look-outs of different height categories, and proportion of wet ground). Tree pipits preferred significantly higher vegetation of lower density than meadow pipits, and there was generally a higher number of high look-outs in their territories. However, in some of the preferred territories at the allopatric locality of the tree pipit, steep hill slopes could well substitute for higher look-outs, which were almost absent. The two pipit species at the sympatric locality occupied very different habitats, which was also reflected in quantitative parameters of their territories. The available data of pipit habitat at different European localities show that the two species can occupy a much wider range of habitats. The habitat separation in sympatry might therefore be one of the mechanisms allowing syntopic coexistence of both species.Communicated by F. Bairlein 相似文献

【目的】为探究生物滞留系统干湿交替下环境因子对氮素功能微生物群落的影响。【方法】应用高通量测序技术(Illumina MiSeq PE300),并以amoA和nirS功能基因为分子标记,对无植物型和植物型生物滞留系统在干湿交替下不同土壤空间位置(种植层、淹没层)的硝化和反硝化细菌的多样性和群落结构进行研究,并对微生物群落与环境因子的相互关系进行相关性分析。【结果】微生物种群的功能基因存在显著的空间差异,相比淹没层,种植层的功能细菌更丰富。种植层的OTUs高于淹没层,而进水再湿润促使两种功能基因在种植层和淹没层的OTUs占比差异性增大。群落组成分析表明,amoA型硝化细菌和nirS型反硝化细菌的优势细菌门均为变形菌门(Proteobacteria)。虽然植物根系对氮素功能微生物的多样性指数影响不显著,但在属水平上,植物系统种植层的反硝化菌群种类高于淹没层,而无植物系统则刚好相反。CCA/RDA分析表明,土壤空间位置是影响硝化和反硝化菌群结构的最重要环境因子。【结论】本研究证实干湿交替运行下生物滞留系统中的氮素功能微生物群落受土壤空间位置、水分含量和植物根系的共同调控,其机制有待进一步研究。 相似文献

Taenia tapeworms of Finnish and Swedish wolves (Canis lupus) and Finnish brown bears (Ursus arctos), and muscle cysticerci of Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus), Alaskan Grant's caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) and Alaskan moose (Alces americanus) were identified on the basis of the nucleotide sequence of a 396 bp region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene. Two species were found from wolves: Taenia hydatigena and Taenia krabbei. The cysticerci of reindeer, caribou and one moose also represented T. krabbei. Most of the cysticercal specimens from Alaskan moose, however, belonged to an unknown T. krabbei-like species, which had been reported previously from Eurasian elks (Alces alces) from Finland. Strobilate stages from two bears belonged to this species as well. The present results suggest that this novel Taenia sp. has a Holarctic distribution and uses Alces spp. as intermediate and ursids as final hosts. 相似文献

An infection of the great European spruce bark beetle Dendroctonus micans (from Turkey) by the parasitic green alga Helicosporidium is described. This is the first time that Helicosporidium has been found to infect a bark beetle (Scolytidae) and the first time that a naturally infected beetle has been reported for the Eurasian continent. The typical cysts of Helicosporidium contain three ovoid cells and one helical, filamentous cell. The morphological characteristics are revealed by light and electron microscopy. Distinct electron-dense inclusions with a peculiar ultrastructure may represent pyrenoids. Since D. micans is an important pest, the discovery of a natural pathogen may offer a chance for biological control. 相似文献

was 36.2 days and the mean duration of swelling was 11.9 days. The estimated duration of gestation in two observed cases was
175 and 176 days, respectively. Females did not exhibit post-conception sexual swelling. Males appeared to ejaculate in multi-mounts.
Serial mounting by the alpha male was concentrated on swelling females, while second- and third-ranking males sometimes mounted

Mites are often overlooked as vectors of pathogens, but have been shown to harbor and transmit rickettsial agents such as
Rickettsia akari and Orientia tsutsugamushi. We screened DNA extracts from 27 mites representing 25 species of dermanyssoids for rickettsial agents such as Anaplasma, Bartonella, Rickettsia, and Wolbachia by PCR amplification and sequencing. The D1/D2 domains of large subunit (LSU) rDNA have commonly been used for phylogenetic analyses of dinoflagellates; however, their properties have not been evaluated in relation to other D domains due to a deficiency of complete sequences. This study reports the complete LSU rRNA gene sequence in the causative unarmored dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides, a member of the order Gymnodiniales, and evaluated the segmented domains and secondary structures when compared with its relatives. Putative LSU rRNA coding regions were recorded to be 3433 bp in length (49.0% GC content). A secondary structure predicted from the LSU and 5.8S rRNAs and parsimony analyses showed that most variation in the LSU rDNA was found in the 12 divergent (D) domains. In particular, the D2 domain was the most informative in terms of recent evolutional and taxonomic aspects, when compared with both the phylogenetic tree topologies and molecular distance (approximately 10 times higher) of the core LSU. Phylogenetic analysis was performed with a matrix of LSU DNA sequences selected from domains D2 to D4 and their flanking core sequences, which showed that C. polykrikoides was placed on the same branch with Akashiwo sanguinea in the “GPP” complex, which is referred to the gymnodinioid, peridinioid and prorocentroid groups. A broad phylogeny showed that armored and unarmored dinoflagellates were never clustered together; instead, they were clearly divided into two groups: the GPP complex and Gonyaulacales. The members of Gymnodiniales were always interspersed with peridinioid, prorocentroid and dinophysoid forms. This supports previous findings showing that the Gymnodiniales are polyphyletic. We examined body length differences between the beetle fauna of Eucalyptus plantation forests and remnant Eucalyptus forest in the same region using aerial and arboreal sampling. Mean body length of plantation-using species was greater than
for remnant forest species, and the same pattern was apparent in the mean of all individuals collected regardless of species.
This pattern was true for both Malaise-trap-collected beetles (aerial) and canopy-collected (arboreal) beetles. The tendency
for plantation-restricted species to have longer bodies is significant even if clade is treated as a random factor in the
analysis. Greater body length among plantation-using species is consistent with a few other studies that have found body size
of insect species in early successional environments is typically greater than in late successional environments. Some studies
suggest that larger species are better dispersers, which can rapidly colonise early successional habitats. In this study,
however, there was little relationship between body length and the number of sites occupied; suggesting dispersal was not
a major determinant of community membership. Two different patterns in this study support the hypothesis that body size differences
are linked to trophic structure of the communities. First, the body length shift comparing remnant users to plantation users
was greater among phytophages than for predators or saprophages. Second, saprophages were typically smaller than phytophages,
and constituted a larger fraction of the remnant forest using fauna, driving down the mean body length in the saprophage-rich

The brassinosteroids (BRs) occur ubiquitously in the plant kingdom. The occurrence of BRs has been demonstrated in almost every part of higher plants, such as pollen, flower buds, fruits, seeds, vascular cambium, leaves, shoots and roots. In this study, BRs were isolated and identified in the culture of wild-type Chlorella vulgaris. Seven BRs, including teasterone, typhasterol, 6-deoxoteasterone, 6-deoxotyphasterol, 6-deoxocastasterone, castasterone and brassinolide, were identified by GC–MS. All compounds belong to the BR biosynthetic pathway. The results suggest that early and late C6 oxidation pathways are operating in C. vulgaris. Brevibacillus choshinensis (formerly Bacillus brevis) is a protein-hyperproducing bacterium and has been used for commercial protein production. Here, we cloned thioredoxin (trxA) and thioredoxin reductase (trxB) genes from B. choshinensis, and expressed the gene products in Escherichia coli with an amino-terminal hexa-His-tag for purification and characterization. His-TrxA and His-TrxB were purified to homogeneity with one-step Ni-NTA affinity column chromatography, and the two recombinant proteins showed identical specific activity with or without removal of the amino-terminal His-tag, indicating that the extrasequence containing the hexa-His-tag did not affect their enzymatic activities. The E. coli expression system used here resulted in a 40-fold increase in production of His-TrxB protein compared to the level of native TrxB produced in non-recombinant B. choshinensis cells. TrxA and TrxB proteins with carboxy-terminal His-tag (TrxA-His and TrxB-His) were successfully expressed in B. choshinensis and were purified by Ni-NTA column chromatography. Co-expression of TrxA-His with recombinant human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) in B. choshinensis promoted the extracellular production of hEGF by up to about 200%. 相似文献

Variability in the size distributions of populations is usually studied in monocultures or in mixed plantings of two species. Variability of size distributions of populations in more complex communities has been neglected. The effects of seeding density (35 or 350 seeds/species/m2) and presence of small vertebrates on the variability of size distributions were studied for a total of 1,920 individuals of 4 species in replicated synthetic communities of 18 species in northern Illinois. End-of season height and above-ground biomass were measured for prairie perennials Dalea purpurea (purple prairie clover), Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower), Desmanthus illinoensis (Illinois bundleflower) and Heliopsis helianthoides (early sunflower). Variability in biomass distribution of the four target species was twice as great at low than at high densities when small vertebrates were excluded. Our results suggest that inter- and intraspecific competition may affect all individuals more under high-density conditions, thereby reducing the variability in their biomass distributions within this community. This result, a consequence of plant-plant interaction, is obscured when small birds or mammals are present, presumably because either or both add variance that overwhelms the pattern. 相似文献

The phytophagous ladybird beetle, Epilachna pustulosa Kôno occurs mainly on the thistle Cirsium kamtschaticum Ledeb. In recent years, we have confirmed feeding and oviposition by E.pustulosa, and some degree of larval development of this beetle, on a naturalized congeneric thistle, Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Tenore. In this study, we assessed the host suitability of C.vulgare for E.pustulosa, using larval rearing and simple food choice tests, by comparing the performance on, and preference for, their legitimate host C.kamtschaticum. All experiments were initiated in July, when the utilization of C.vulgare by E.pustulosa became obvious. For larval performance, E.pustulosa showed a lower eclosion rate, shorter developmental duration and smaller body size when reared on C.vulgare than on C.kamtschaticum. Cirsium vulgare appeared to be a less adequate larval food than C.kamtschaticum. Adult feeding preference was altered seasonally; females preferred C.kamtschaticum to C.vulgare in a food choice test conducted in early July, whereas they showed the opposite preference in tests conducted in mid and late July. The utilization of C.vulgare by E.pustulosa appeared to be induced by qualitative deterioration of C.kamtschaticum leaves in July, which resulted in increased dispersion of adult beetles. 相似文献
