The chief lipid fraction in the uropygial gland excretion of the domestic hen is a diester wax. The saponifiable fraction of this wax consists of saturated normal C(10)-C(20) fatty acids. The unsaponifiable fraction consists of a series of three homologous compounds, which have been named the uropygiols and identified by mass spectrometry, gas-liquid chromatography, and periodate cleavage as 2,3-n-alkanediols containing 22-24 carbon atoms. The native diols were shown to consist of about equal amounts of the threo and erythro isomers. Records of analyses of the natural products as well as related synthetic compounds are shown.  相似文献

Malonyl-CoA decarboxylase in the mitochondria of the liver of goose is immunologically identical with the decarboxylase in the cytoplasm of the uropygial gland (Buckner et al. (1978) Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 186, 152–163). Messenger RNA was isolated from the liver and the uropygial gland and translated in a rabbit reticulocyte system. Specific immunoprecipitation of the translation products with anti malonyl-CoA decarboxylase showed that in both cases the primary translation product was a 50 K dalton peptide identical in size to the cytoplasmic enzyme in the gland. Specific immunoprecipitation of malonyl-CoA decarboxylase from liver slices which had been incubated with [35S]methionine showed that the mature mitochondrial enzyme was a 47 K dalton peptide, 3 K daltons smaller than the primary translation product and the isolated cytoplasmic enzyme. These results suggest that the decarboxylase is proteolytically processed during transport into the mitochondria and that the large amount of the cytoplasmic decarboxylase found in the gland represents accumulation of the unprocessed precursor form of the normally mitochondrial enzyme.  相似文献

Although birds are hosts to a large number of microorganisms, microbes have rarely been found in avian oil glands. Here, we report on two strains of a new bacterial species from the preen oil of American barn owls (Tyto furcata). Phenotypic as well as genotypic methods placed the isolates to the genus Kocuria. Strains are non-fastidious, non-lipophilic Gram-positive cocci and can be unambiguously discriminated from their closest relative Kocuria rhizophila DSM 11926T. In phylogenetic trees, the owl bacteria formed a distinct cluster which was clearly separated from all other known Kocuria species. The same conclusion was drawn from MALDI-TOF MS analyses. Once again, the new bacterial strains were very similar to one another, but exhibited substantial differences when compared to the most closely related species. Besides, the results of the biochemical tests, optimum growth conditions and pigmentation differed from closely related Kocuria spp. Finally, ANIb values of less than 87% provided striking evidence that the isolates recovered from American barn owls represent a hitherto undescribed species, for which we propose the name Kocuria tytonicola sp. nov. The type strain is 489T (DSM 104133T = LMG 29945T, taxonumber TA00340).  相似文献

Two strains (pedersoliT and girotti) of a new species of bacteria were isolated from the preen glands of wild Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiacus) from the river Neckar in southern Germany in two subsequent years. The strains were lipophilic, fastidious, Gram-positive rods and belonged to the genus Corynebacterium. Phylogenetically, the isolates were most closely related to Corynebacterium falsenii DSM 44353T which has been found to be associated with birds before. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to all known Corynebacterium spp. was significantly <97%. Corresponding values of rpoB showed low levels of similarity <87% and ANIb was <73%. G + C content of the genomic DNA was 65.0 mol% for the type strain of the goose isolates, as opposed to 63.2 mol% in Corynebacterium falsenii. MALDI-TOF MS analysis of the whole-cell proteins revealed patterns clearly different from the related species, as did biochemical tests, and polar lipid profiles. We therefore conclude that the avian isolates constitute strains of a new species, for which the name Corynebacterium heidelbergense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is pedersoliT (=DSM 104638T = LMG 30044T).  相似文献

Two new species of Gram-positive cocci were isolated from the uropygial glands of wild woodpeckers (Dendrocopos major) originating from different locations in Germany. A polyphasic approach confirmed the affiliation of the isolates to the genus Kocuria. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene showed high degree of similarity to Kocuria koreensis DSM 23367T (99.0% for both isolates). However, low ANIb values of <80% unequivocally separated the new species from K. koreensis. This finding was further corroborated by DNA fingerprinting and analysis of polar lipid profiles. Furthermore, growth characteristics, biochemical tests, MALDI-TOF MS analysis, and G + C contents clearly differentiated the isolates from their known relatives. Besides, the woodpecker isolates significantly differed from each other in their whole-cell protein profiles, DNA fingerprints, and ANIb values. In conclusion, the isolated microorganisms constitute members of two new species, for which the names Kocuria uropygioeca sp. nov. and Kocuria uropygialis sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains are 36T (DSM 101740T = LMG 29265T) and 257T (=DSM 101741T = LMG 29266T) for K. uropygialis sp. nov. and K. uropygioeca sp. nov., respectively.  相似文献

Uropygial gland of quails was previously proved to have androgen receptors. The waxes secreted by this gland were shown to consist mainly of linear saturated fatty acids esterified by linear saturated diols. In adult male quails, the relative concentration of the C12 diol was found to be correlated to the androgen levels of the birds. Furthermore, in castrated quails implanted with testosterone propionate capsules, 6 days were required for the C12 diol to reach the level found in sexually active birds. These testosterone effects related to the C12 diol were nullified by cyproterone acetate administration. Consequently the C12 diol is a reliable specific marker for androgenicity in the quails' preen gland, a new and accurate model for the study of androgen action in sebaceous glands.  相似文献

Summary An ultrastructural investigation of the organogenesis of the duck preen gland showed variations at the ecto-mesodermal interface in the course of development. During the period of invagination, ectoderm and mesoderm were separated by a continuous basal lamina. Morphogenesis of the tubules is characterized by a preferential deposition of non-oriented collagen fibres localized at the branching sites. Direct contacts between ectodermal extensions and mesodermal cells, through gaps in the basal lamina, appeared at the end-buds after the morphogenetic pattern was established and before the onset of the glandular secretory activity. The correlation between the modification of the ecto-mesodermal interface and the differentiation of uropygial ectoderm is discussed.  相似文献

Parental role division predicts avian preen wax cycles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Previous studies have shown that preen wax composition in some sandpipers shifts from the usual monoesters to diesters during the breeding season, possibly to reduce the ability of mammalian predators to find nests using olfactory cues. To investigate further the relationship between incubation and wax secretion, we examined seven sandpiper species with different incubation patterns (species in which both sexes incubate, in which only males incubate and in which only females incubate). During the breeding period, diester preen wax was secreted almost exclusively by the incubating sex in species with uniparental incubation, and by both sexes in species with biparental incubation. These findings suggest that diester preen waxes have a function that is directly related to incubation. Unexpectedly, in female-incubating Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea and Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites subruficollis , some males also secreted diester preen waxes during the breeding period. This suggests that some males may in fact incubate, that these waxes may be a remnant from their evolutionary past when both sexes incubated, or that males need to be olfactorally cryptic because they are involved in the making of nest scrapes. The seasonal pattern of preen wax composition was also studied in captive male, female and female-mimicking male ('faeder') Ruff Philomachus pugnax . Captive female Ruff changed preen wax composition from monoesters to diesters in the spring despite the fact that no incubation took place. This suggests that circannual rhythms rather than actual incubation behaviour may trigger the shift to diester waxes. All captive male Ruff, including the faeders, continued to secrete monoesters, supporting the hypothesis that only the incubating sex secretes diesters.  相似文献

Androgen receptors have been found in duck preen glands by using dextran-coated charcoal adsorption. They bound DHT with high affinity (KD = 0.2 nM), limited capacity (45 fmoles/mgP) and good specificity. They sedimented at 8 S in a sucrose gradient and were destroyed by pronase digestion and heating. An estrogen receptor having different binding specificity was also demonstrated. On the basis of a marked annual cycle of gonadal activity in ducks, this system appears appropriate for studying the regulation of sex steroid hormone receptors.  相似文献

The chemical composition of preen gland secretions of antbirds (Thamnophilidae and Formicaridae) and phylogenetically closely related Dendrocolaptidae, Tyrannidae and Pipridae were investigated to understand the role of environment in secretion components. The secretions of Thamnophilidae consisted of long chain acids, alcohols, esters, unsaturated hydrocarbons, and isoprenoids. Formicaridae secretions contained exclusively squalene and its derivatives. In Pipridae, secretions were made up of complex long chain esters. In Dendrocolaptidae, the secretions consisted of long chain esters of both saturated and monounsaturated acids combined with mono-alcohols and those of Tyrannidae consisted of long chain esters of saturated, mono- and tri-unsaturated acids with mono- and di-ols that were less complex. Higher molecular weight saturated and unsaturated components in tropical species suggest that the volatility of the secretion components is correlated to environmental temperatures experienced by the birds. Squalene is a precursor in steroid biosynthesis, but higher amounts in Formicaridae secretions suggest that it may have some additional functions.  相似文献

Avian plumage harbors various pathogens such as feather-degrading bacteria, which have the potential to reduce host fitness. A growing body of evidence suggests that the secretion of the uropygial gland of birds—preen oil—acts as one of the first lines of defence against harmful bacteria. However, previous studies on the antimicrobial impact of preen oil have yielded controversial results. The impact of preen oil on bacterial densities of feathers was experimentally investigated in two passerine species: great tits Parus major and pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca. More specifically, we tested whether the antibacterial effect of the preen oil secreted by the same individual differs from that of the preen oil originating from the gland of other species. In the laboratory, ventral feathers were treated with preen oil from (1) an individual’s own gland, (2) from the gland of another passerine species, or (3) from the gland of a phylogenetically distant bird species. We detected a significant antibacterial effect of preen oil on bacteria that were attached to feathers, though the effect did not depend on whether the oil originated from the individual’s own gland or from the gland of another bird species. However, treatment with preen oil suppressed the density of bacteria more in the pied flycatcher than in the great tit. This is the first study providing experimental evidence that preen oil represents an important antimicrobial mechanism against those plumage bacteria that are attached to feathers.  相似文献
