A practical and inexpensive alternative to the standard primate chair is described. The apparatus is designed to allow easy removal of rhesus monkeys from their home cages and to allow restraint without anesthesia. A portable Plexiglas cage, which can be adjusted to accommodate rhesus monkeys of varying sizes, is placed against an animal's home cage. The animal is then trained to avoid the squeeze mechanism of the home cage by going into the Plexiglas cage. The animal's head can then be secured by means of poles hooked to a light weight collar worn permanently. This device and procedure allows an investigator to work with a restrained animal without resorting to drugs, unnecessary force or chronic restraint. Animals can be transferred daily with this technique with minimal conditioning and cooperation.  相似文献

A squeeze cage at Woodland Park Zoo has become a valuable tool in giraffe management. The cage has been used 63 times in 4 years with no serious injuries to animals or personnel. Conditioning the giraffes to the cage is of foremost importance in planning a successful restraining procedure. Individual giraffes react differently to the stress of being confined, so careful monitoring of behavior throughout is imperative to anticipate and prevent potential problems. Staff should be fully trained in the use of the equipment and familiar with the temperament of the giraffe. The cage is used for hoof trimming and routine medical examinations, including blood collection, X-rays, and giving injections.  相似文献

The design of an apparatus which allows hens to work for feeder space or for cage size is described. Using this apparatus, it is shown that groups of 4 hens will only rarely work to obtain more than the 40-cm length of feed trough which is usually provided in Europe for a group of 4 medium hybrid hens in a deep battery cage. This implies that there is no requirement for a larger feeder.Given the opportunity, the hens chose to spend up to 50% of the day in a cage larger than their usual battery cage, but this effect was highly variable both between groups and from day to day. A more detailed study of which birds in a group work, and of what the birds do in the enlarged cage, is needed before firm conclusions about the cage-size requirements of laying hens can be made.  相似文献

When confronted with a novel situation rats show a tendency either to stay in a dark place or to retreat to a familiar place, if available. To produce a conflict between these two tendencies the rat's home cage was connected by a runway to a dark but unfamiliar compartment. Three groups of rats were tested in this apparatus with different levels of illumination in the home cage. Tryon Maze Bright rats showed a strong preference for the home cage which was independent of the illumination level. This preference was also found in Wistar rats. With a very high level of illumination in the home cage, however, Wistar rats showed a preference for the home cage only in the first few trials or a series of repeated trials. In later trials they spent more time in the dark part of the apparatus. The results were regarded as an indication that in a novel situation rats primarily search for a familiar place. When such a place is available they tolerate aversive stimulation present in this place.  相似文献

A novel forced-air ventilation system for rodent cages was developed. The apparatus was operated at an air flow rate of 56 L/min when used with a 230 mm wide X 450 mm long X 165 mm deep cage. Air velocity measurements in the cage did not exceed 8 m/min at animal (rat) height. The average NH3 concentration in a cage which housed two 250 g rats was less than 0.3 ppm at the end of the third day, whereas the concentration measured in a cage without the forced-air ventilation system was 150 ppm after 3 days. Tests of the water content of soiled bedding showed the forced-air ventilation system to provide a much drier environment for the rodents.  相似文献

The exploratory or feeding activities of others might influence the timing, the place, or both, of exploratory activities among young group-living individuals, and this influence might affect the information gained by individuals during exploration. This study examined the temporal and spatial aspects of adults' influence on the exploratory behavior of juvenile capuchins, and on the juveniles' acquisition of a novel behavior. Two experimental apparatus, which were initially novel to the juvenile subjects but familiar to the adults, and which provided food when a tool was used properly, were presented to group-housed capuchin monkeys. The apparatus were presented (a) in a central area, in which all animals could interact with the apparatus and in which several older group members regularly solved the tasks (group site), and (b) in a protected site within the home cage (crèche) that only juveniles could enter, but from which the rest of the cage, including the group site, could be viewed. Juveniles contacted the apparatus at the crèche more often when there was no apparatus at the group site, but only half the individuals made greater use of the apparatus at the group site than at the crèche when an apparatus was present at both sites. Seven of nine used an apparatus more often when adults also had an apparatus, than when adults did not have an apparatus. These results indicate that juveniles' exploratory activity is only weakly related to adults' activity. The linkage appears closer for younger juveniles (20 months or less) than for older juveniles. Moreover, as only older juveniles learned to solve the tasks, coordination of exploration with adults was evidently not related to learning a new skill. © Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The practice of using a protective filter apparatus when housing five mice per cage resulted in ammonia levels exceeding 25 ppm. A re-usable mobile catheterization apparatus was developed that permits multiple blood samples to be obtained from nonrestrained and unanesthetized mice. The collection end of the catheter is located outside the cage allowing the mouse to remain completely undisturbed prior to and during blood collection. The apparatus was used in adult mice surgically fitted under pentobarbital anesthesia with right atrial silastic catheters. Sample volume and collection frequency are easily controlled without subjecting the animal to repetitive trauma. Low plasma corticosterone concentrations confirmed the nonstressful quality of the technique. Full catheter patency in mice averaged 21.5 days. The tethering apparatus design was easily upscaled to accommodate use in adult rats.  相似文献

Videotape sampling of behavior in a dual-chambered apparatus indicates that the continuous monitoring of the amount of time a mother spends in the cage with its litter can be taken as a valid reflection of maternal behavior. Nursing is the principal behavior of lactating females while in the compartment with their litters; lying still, consummatory behavior, and activity occur with greater frequency in the cage away from the litter. Both the time that mothers spend with their litters and nursing behavior displayed a 24-hr rhythm with crest values occurring during the period of light.  相似文献

Newly synthesized proteins en route to the Golgi apparatus are exported from the endoplasmic reticulum by COPII coated vesicles. Fath et al. (2007) now reveal the structure of a large portion of the yeast Sec13/31 complex, which comprises the coat framework of COPII-coated vesicles. Two experiments were performed to elucidate aspects of the spatial preference of domestic hens kept in battery cages.In the first experiment, 12 hens were given a choice between four cages differing in size and shape. The measure of preference used was the amount of time spent in each cage under free-access conditions. The results show that the hens spent most time in the cage with the largest floor area, but that substantial amounts of time were spent in the remaining three cages. Eight possible explanations for this non-exclusive choice are proposed: variation among hens; change of preference with time; mis-identification; constraints on decision-making; pacing; sampling; monitoring; genuine preference. The first six hypotheses are discussed with respect to this experiment.The second experiment, using 6 hens under similar conditions, was designed to distinguish between the latter two hypotheses. The results suggest there may be a monitoring component to the hens' behaviour in this apparatus, characterised by cage visits of short duration. In addition, the hens may continue to visit small cages in order to perform particular behaviour patterns. Nest-building behaviour is mentioned as one possibility.  相似文献

Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of the adrenal cortex in the regulation of antioxidant enzyme defense and to characterize this regulation in different age periods. Methods Five young and five old female rhesus monkeys were subjected to 2 hours squeeze cage restraint stress at 0900 or 1500 hours. Plasma levels of corticosteroids and activities of erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes were measured before the stress and 30, 60, 120, 240 minutes after beginning of the stress. Results Young monkeys showed a circadian rhythm in stress responsiveness as measured by corticosteroids and glutathione reductase. The rhythm was attenuated in old animals. Age‐related changes in the overall level of response to the afternoon stress were also seen in the corticosteroid and glutathione reductase measures. Conclusions The study demonstrated that corticosteroids play an essential role in the regulation of antioxidant enzyme defense in stress conditions and that the reliability of their regulation decreases with age.  相似文献

Olfactory isolation of individual experimental and control animals seems to be necessary to investigate the role of chemosignals in the biology of small rodents. Each cage was isolated in a polyethylene bag and applied with purified air drawn through wash bottles containing concentrated sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid aerosols were bound with saturated calcium chloride. Calcium chloride served also to humidify the air. Possible improvements to the apparatus are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of female mice (Mus musculus) on intermale aggression and the female choice between dominant and subordinate males were tested. Normal male mice were paired with a castrated male or a female. Two pairs of the same kind were housed together after acclimation for 3 days in half (home cage) of the apparatus, which was composed of eight cages connected by tunnels. One of the two normal males became dominant. The dominant males became more aggressive in the presence of females than in the presence of castrated males. The two normal males dwelt in their own home cages. The two females dwelt together and preferred to dwell in the home cages of the dominant male. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) to cooperate in an instrumental task. A specially constructed fruit distributor was presented to a group of six captive chimpanzees. A cooperative response required two chimpanzees: both had to pull a handle simultaneously to make a fruit fall into the cage. The dominant male of the group and an infant produced most of the operant responses, and the male got nearly all the fruits. Other conspecifics avoided the dominant male at the apparatus. Social influences appear to limit the possibility of co-operation between individuals because a certain level of interindividual tolerance is required. The results revealed a significant increase in the number of pulls each time both chimpanzees were together at the apparatus. Operant chimpanzees learn to coordinate their actions in time and space.  相似文献

Social foraging can inhibit the learning and performance of food-finding behaviours. Confusion, overshadowing and frequency-dependent payoffs may all contribute to the inhibition, but standard experimental procedures make the separation of these effects difficult. In this study, we combine characteristics of cage and aviary experiments and present either a single naive pigeon or groups of three naive pigeons with a pre-trained producer opening an apparatus in an aviary. All naive birds scrounged on the 3456 openings they witnessed. In a post-test given in the absence of other birds, all single scroungers opened the apparatus, but only one of the group-scrounging pigeons did. Scrounger numbers appear to play an important role in the inhibition of food-finding behaviour, suggesting that confusion is a major component of learning in a social context.  相似文献

Recently, there has been a rapid increase in the use of cervical spine interbody fusion cages, differing in design and biomaterial used, in competition to autologous iliac bone graft and bone cement (PMMA). Limited biomechanical differences in primary stability, as well as advantages and disadvantages of each cage or material have been investigated in studies, using an in vitro human cervical spine model. 20 human cervical spine specimens were tested after fusion with either a cubical stand-alone interbody fusion cage manufactured from a new porous TiO2/glass composite (Ecopore) or PMMA after discectomy. Non-destructive biomechanical testing was performed, including flexion/extension and lateral bending using a spine testing apparatus. Three-dimensional segmental range of motion (ROM) was evaluated using an ultrasound measurement system. ROM increased more in flexion/extension and lateral bending after PMMA fusion (26.5%/36.1%), then after implantation of the Ecopore-cage (8.1%/7.8%). In this first biomechanical in vitro examination of a new porous ceramic bone replacement material a) the feasibility and reproducibility of biomechanical cadaveric cervical examination and its applicability was demonstrated, b) the stability of the ceramic cage as a stand alone interbody cage was confirmed in vitro, and c) basic information and knowledge for our intended biomechanical and histological in vivo testing, after implantation of Ecopore in cervical sheep spines, were obtained.  相似文献

The minimalistic environment of standard laboratory cages can adversely influence the responses of animals in standard behavioural tests and other aspects of the animals' biology. To avoid this, cages should provide for the animals' species-specific behavioural characteristics. We hypothesized that, given their possible capacity for colour vision, laboratory mice, Mus musculus, would show preferences between cages of different colours. Studies show that environmental colour can influence emotionality and task performance in humans, suggesting that cage colour could also affect emotionality and performance of mice in behavioural tests. Seventy-two mice were housed in home cages painted red, black, green or white. Five weeks later, 24 mice were placed individually into an apparatus allowing them to choose between cages of each of the home cage colours. Each mouse showed a highly significant preference, which overall, was unrelated to home cage colour. White cages were most preferred and red were least. Home cage colour had a significant effect on body weight and food consumption as well as on behaviour in a raised plus maze. Mice from red home cages spent most time in the closed arms, indicating greater anxiety, possibly suggesting that the reduced occupancy of the red preference cages resulted from avoidance of environmental conditions that induced a negative mental state. These findings show that laboratory mice have strong preferences between cages of different colours. We also found that an apparently inconsequential environmental variable, home cage colour, can influence responses in standard behavioural tests, which should be considered in assessing the external validity of such tests. The facility consists of a 12 × 11.5 × 2.4 m high room containing six sets of exposure apparatus and the other equipment necessary to maintain a pathogen-free system. The apparatus sets produced 5 mT (rms), 0.5 mT, or a sham exposure. The apparatus was arranged in the room to minimize the fringing field of the 5 mT set at the sham position. Each set was 3.85 × 1.80 × 0.66 m in outside dimension, containing 24 cages in the magnetically homogeneous region. The apparatus was designed using Harvey's figure-eight-configuration and generated a horizontal sinusoidal alternating field. In order to save electric power, the coil of the apparatus constituted a 50 Hz LC resonance circuit with a condensor bank to which electric power was supplied to compensate losses. Magnetic flux density was kept constant by controlling the coil current. Although mild steel was used in the skeleton of the building, the fringing flux at the sham was as low as 0.1 to 1 μT. Stainless steel was used for ventilating ducts, racks for the cages, cage covers, feeder baskets, and watering nozzles. The homogeneity of the field was measured to be ± 10% in the animal residence area, and food and water consumption was found to be unaffected by the field. At 5 mT, the coil current was 370 A, and the hollow coil was cooled by a stream of 20°C water to prevent both heat and dew on the coil surface. Vibration and acoustic noise was prevented by fiber reinforced plastic framework of the coil. High harmonic distortion was not observed at the output terminal of the coil driver. A swivel-tethering and jacket system was used in conjunction with vinyl patch electrodes and Holter recorders to obtain continuous ECG recordings in 12 rhesus monkeys on a long-term (12 day) study. Animals were custom-fitted with nylon mesh jackets that were connected to a swivel unit by a flexible, stainless steel tether. Lead wires from the chest electrodes passed through the tether to the electrical swivel apparatus located at the top of the cage. Wires from the upper part of the swivel were attached to a reel-to-reel Holter recorder. This technique was used to obtain 24-h continuous ECG recordings, which were later processed using a computer-assisted Holter analysis system.  相似文献
