In the oblique-banded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana, and the spruce budworm, C. fumiferana, male reproductive performance decreases with consecutive matings. While the onset time of mating did not vary, the time spent mating was longer in mated than in virgin males. Furthermore, a decline observed in the spermatophore mass with successive matings was associated with a concomitant decline in its apyrene and eupyrene spermatozoa content. In the hours following mating, spermatozoa migrate from the spermatophore, located in the bursa copulatrix, to the spermatheca. Regardless of the male's previous mating history, the number of apyrene sperm dropped rapidly in the days following mating whereas the number of eupyrene spermatozoa declined gradually. As the temporal pattern of sperm movement was similar in all treatments, females mated with previously-mated males would suffer from sperm shortage sooner than those mated with virgins. Large C. rosaceana females stored more apyrene spermatozoa in their spermatheca than small ones, irrespective of the time after mating or male mating history, while only large females mated with once-mated males received more apyrene sperm and accessory gland secretions than small ones mated with virgin or twice-mated males. The results obtained in this study are discussed in relation with their potential impact on the reproductive success of both sexes.

Many diverse traits are involved in gamete systems, and several models have analysed sperm length variation in terms of the intensity of sperm competition. This study investigates mating, sperm transfer and oviposition patterns in Drosophila bifurca, which possesses the longest sperm in the animal kingdom (about 6 cm). The prediction is that sperm gigantism should prevent male–male interaction. In this study, we examine how sperm transfer varies as males mate with a series of females, and how female receptivity changes with time after mating. As predicted, we found an extremely limited overlap of ejaculates owing to (1) reduced sperm transfer to females that had already mated, and (2) female remating depended both on the amount of sperm transferred and the modes of egg laying. The amount of sperm transferred to the female is discussed in relation to the peculiar morphology of the male reproductive tract and to sexual dimorphism and ecological hypotheses.

The avoidance of familiar individuals as mates can act to maximizethe benefits of polyandry or might help to minimize inbreedingin small or highly philopatric populations. As previous matesare also familiar, the effects of familiarity and mating historycan often be confounded. Here, we disentangle these effectson mating decisions in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and examinetheir influence on sexual selection. In 3 experiments, malesand females were 1) able to mate, 2) had visual and olfactorycontact, or 3) had visual contact only. Familiarity was successfullyacquired via visual cues, and females were in all cases morelikely to mate with unfamiliar than with familiar males, indicatingthat familiarity is a more important determinant of mating outcomethan mating history. Males did not court unfamiliar femalesany more than familiar females and did not differentially allocatesperm. Familiarity did not alter the strength of sexual selectionon male coloration: we found overall positive selection forbright, large males. Female preferences for unfamiliar malesand ornamental traits may therefore be largely independent.

Mating plugs occluding the female gonopore after mating are a widespread phenomenon. In scorpions, two main types of mating plugs are found: sclerotized mating plugs being parts of the spermatophore that break off during mating, and gel‐like mating plugs being gelatinous fluids that harden in the female genital tract. In this study, the gel‐like mating plug of Euscorpius italicus was investigated with respect to its composition, fine structure, and changes over time. Sperm forms the major component of the mating plug, a phenomenon previously unknown in arachnids. Three parts of the mating plug can be distinguished. The part facing the outside of the female (outer part) contains sperm packages containing inactive spermatozoa. In this state, sperm is transferred. In the median part, the sperm packages get uncoiled to single spermatozoa. In the inner part, free sperm is embedded in a large amount of secretions. Fresh mating plugs are soft gelatinous, later they harden from outside toward inside. This process is completed after 3‐5 days. Sperm from artificially triggered spermatophores could be activated by immersion in insect Ringer's solution indicating that the fluid condition in the females' genital tract or females' secretions causes sperm activation. Because of the male origin of the mating plug, it has likely evolved under sperm competition or sexual conflict. As females refused to remate irrespective of the presence or absence of a mating plug, females may have changed their mating behavior in the course of evolution from polyandry to monandry. J. The occurrence of multiple mating in Drosophila melanogaster is of particular interest to evolutionary biologists, as seminal fluid has some toxic effects for females. Thus, it has been predicted that the number of matings per females should be low. We have tested this prediction with seven highly polymorphic microsatellite loci in inseminated females from a Viennese D. melanogaster population. In contrast to the predicted low number of matings and previous studies in natural populations, we identified the genotypes of four to six different males fertilizing the offspring of each female tested. Potential causes and consequences are discussed.

Abstract.  1. The Local Mate Competition (LMC) model predicts that, in gregarious and quasi-gregarious species, a lone female exploiting a host patch will lay only the minimal number of sons necessary to inseminate all daughters, but as the number of foundresses increases, the proportion of sons deposited by these females also increases.
2. For off-patch mating to occur, non-sperm-depleted males must leave the patch and find virgin females.
3. To investigate the distribution of matings among males, the sperm stock at dispersal and the time of dispersal were quantified for male Trichogramma turkestanica (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).
4. Matings were not distributed equally among males: some successful males acquired more matings than others. Because of this, a high variability in the sperm stock at dispersal was observed. While few males dispersed almost empty or almost full, the majority of males dispersed with enough sperm to be able to mate with females outside the emergence patch.
5. The mating capacity was thus higher than necessary for local mating and could be explained by an unequal distribution of mating opportunities and the occurrence of off-patch mating.

Biogenic amines such as dopamine are physiologically neuroactive substances that affect behavioral and physiological traits in invertebrates, and it has long been known that these substances affect mating behavior in insects. Caffeine is a dopamine activator and thus enhances dopamine receptor activity. However, the effects of caffeine intake on insect mating behavior have been largely unexplored. Therefore, we examined the effect of caffeine on mating behavior in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Caffeine, which activates dopamine, affected the mating behavior of T. castaneum males. Males who orally ingested caffeine courted faster than males who did not, resulting in faster mounting of females and less time to a male's external aedeagus protrusion. However, the present results showed no difference in sperm precedence measured as a P2 value between males fed caffeine and males not fed caffeine. We discuss the effects of caffeine on insect mating and the possibility that caffeine consumption may cause males to mate with more females in the laboratory.

Among Trinidadian guppies Poecilia reticulata , 15% of non-receptive females had recoverable sperm that must have come from successful sneaky matings. These results provide the first evidence that sneaky mating is a successful method of sperm transfer in wild populations of the guppy.

ABSTRACT

Mating plugs are hardened structures—typically a coagulation of seminal fluid components—that are transferred to, or formed within, the female reproductive tract of numerous animal species (both mammals and insects). Analysis of the role(s) of the mating plug in reproduction has been conducted in a wide array of diverse species. These structures have been proposed to have a multitude of functions, which include altering female re-mating rate, acting as a barrier to re-mating and being required for sperm storage or sperm movement to occur in mated females. A recent analysis of the Drosophila melanogaster mating plug has shown that proper formation of the structure is required for optimal fertility in flies: the Drosophila mating plug is required to retain the ejaculate within the female reproductive tract once mating has terminated. Here, we discuss the possible implications of the Drosophila mating plug in the fertility of this species in light of these new results.

Theoretical models predict that males should allocate more sperm in matings where the immediate risk of sperm competition is high. It has therefore often been argued that males should invest less sperm in matings with virgin females compared with matings with already mated females. However, with relatively polyandrous females, high sperm competition risk will covary with high sperm competition intensity leading to more unpredictable conditions, as high competition intensity should favour smaller ejaculates. With the use of a genetic algorithm, we found that males should allocate more sperm in matings with virgin females when female mating frequency is relatively high, whereas low remating rates will select for higher effort in matings with nonvirgin females. At higher remating rates, first male sperm precedence favours larger ejaculates in matings with virgin females and second male precedence favours the reverse. These results shed some light on several findings that have been difficult to explain adaptively by the hitherto developed theory on sperm allocation.

Zygopterans belonging to the genus Ischnura are unusual amongst damselflies because of the variety of mate guarding techniques employed by males of different species. The lack of post-copulatory guarding combined with lengthy copulations in one group of ischnuran species suggest that these males guard females in copula. An examination of the accessory penes of species in this group indicates that all but one species have considerable microspination on the distal end (the flagella) of their penes that can function in sperm displacement. The flagella of these species are long and thin compared to those of other ischnurans. This is likely an adaptation to gain access to the spermatheca of the female. Two species tandem guard their mates during ovipositing. These species are the only ischnurans missing a stout pair of basal spines on the penultimate segments of their penes. They have considerable microspination over much of their penes but their flagella are of only moderate length and stout. Ischnurans that do not mate guard have short, stout flagella and most species examined from this group (5 of 7) have litde microspination on their flagella tips. It is proposed that females of these species mate only once and therefore their males do not displace sperm.

Male common shrews (Sorex araneus) adopt two discrete matingtactics. The most successful males, in terms of number of offspringfathered, are those that establish large overlapping home rangesin areas of high female density early in the breeding season. An alternative, less successful mating tactic is to travel longdistances in search of mating opportunities. This study is aninvestigation of correlates of reproductive success for malesadopting these different mating tactics. Reproductive successunder natural conditions was assessed using DNA fingerprinting, and survival of offspring was monitored in the field. The numberof offspring fathered by males with overlapping home rangeswas positively correlated with the number of female ranges overlappedduring the breeding season and with testes mass. The numberof offspring fathered by males that made long-distance movementswas positively correlated with their epididymal sperm counts. It is argued that competitively superior (overlapping) malesachieve high reproductive success by competing to maximize thenumber of females inseminated, whereas those adopting an alternativemating tactic instead compete largely via sperm competition, aiming to maximize insemination success with any particularfemale. There was no significant difference in the fluctuatingasymmetry (FA) of males adopting different mating tactics (FAwas measured as the difference in length of the paired lateralscent glands). Fluctuating asymmetry was not related to thenumber of offspring fathered by males adopting either matingtactic, but was significantly correlated with the proportionof male offspring fathered that survived to sexual maturity.Although apparently not correlated with mating success in thisspecies, FA may reflect some aspect of genetic quality thataffects offspring survival.
