1. The effects of riffles as barriers to movement of stream fish was investigated in a set of eight large outdoor artificial streams. Pools were 183 cm in diameter and 45 cm deep; riffles were 183 cm long and 43 cm wide. Rates of movement of three species of minnows (Cyprinidae) (Campostoma anomalum, Cyprinella venusta and Notropis boops) among pools were measured at four riffle current velocities (0, 15, 30 and 45 cm s–1), three thalweg depths (10, 50 and 100 mm), two riffle lengths (183 and 549 cm), and with and without the threat of predation. Visual observation and video cameras were used to quantify movement rate. 2. Mean movement rate (percentage of fish crossing a riffle each 30 min) was 18.1% at 0 cm s–1 and only 1.8 at 45 cm s–1. Movement rate was 7.2% with no predators present and 20.2% with caged predators in pools. Notropis boops had a lower rate of movement than C. venusta or C. anomalum across all trials. The mean group size (number of individuals crossing a riffle together) was 1.2 fish overall, indicating most movement was by individuals and not groups. Group size was significantly greater only with shallow riffles or under the threat of predation. 3. Overall biotic and abiotic factors in these artificial streams do influence movement rates and may affect movement among pools in natural streams.  相似文献

The physical structure of two riffles in a lowland Danish stream was studied and its importance for the composition and density of the macroinvertebrate communities was evaluated. The two riffles were visually assessed to be very similar, but measurements revealed that they differed in overall hydraulic conditions, stability, substratum composition and consolidation. Differences affected abundance of both burrowing and surface dwelling macroinvertebrates. The unstable unconsolidated riffle had higher total macroinvertebrate abundance (4137 m−2 vs. 1698 m−2), diptera abundance (2329 m−2 vs. 386 m−2) and total estimated species richness (31.7 vs. 28.8) as well as lower evenness (0.77 vs. 0.83) than the compact riffle. Among samples within the unconsolidated riffle, variations in macroinvertebrate communities were related to differences in mean substratum particle size. Here a linear log–log relationship existed between macroinvertebrate abundance, the abundance of EPT taxa and the median particle size (r 2 total = 0.46, p = 0.002; r 2 EPT = 0.73, p < 0.001). No similar relationships were evident on the consolidated riffle. Moreover, macroinvertebrate communities on the unconsolidated riffle were dominated by species with a high colonising potential. Despite being assessed to the same morphological unit, physical variation between riffles was surprisingly high as the riffles differed substantially with respect to consolidation, substratum heterogeneity and overall hydraulic structure. Macroinvertebrate community structure and composition also differed between riffles despite being drawn from the same species pool. The findings address the question if we use the correct methods and parameters when assessing the macroinvertebrate communities at the scale of the morphological unit.  相似文献

A telemetry study in a Norwegian regulated river was conducted through a 12-day period in mid-winter 2003. The objective was to study activity (defined as number of movement per hour) and movement (defined as distance moved per hour) during different ice formation events. Twenty-four Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr were radio tagged and continuously monitored by both manually tracking (N = 24) and by fixed recording stations (N = 15). Detailed data on climate, flow and ice formation and its spatial distribution were collected and used in the analyses. Fish activity was not found to be affected by their size (L F). There was a significant difference in activity between diel periods with highest activity during dusk (5–6 p.m.). Between high and low flow (mean ± SD, 21.1 m3 s−1 ± 1.7 SD and 11.1 m3 s−1 ± 1.7 SD, respectively) no significant difference in activity was found. During the experiment extensive anchor ice growth occurred mainly in the riffle part with thickness up to 50 cm. Juveniles tend to avoid riffle section during anchor ice formation and exploited ice covered areas, indicating critical and preferable habitats respectively. Further, a significant difference in movement was found between five selected ice events with highest mean movement during an anchor ice event and lowest mean movement during an ice break up with no anchor ice formation. No significant difference in activity or movement between parr exposed to frazil ice and parr not exposed were found.  相似文献

An investigation into the changing phytoplankton biomass and total water column production during autumn sea ice formation in the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica showed reduced biomass concentrations and extremely low daily primary production. Mean chlorophyll-a concentration for the entire study period was extremely low, 0.15±0.01 mg.m−3 with a maximum of 0.35 mg.m−3 found along the first transect to the east of the grid. Areas of low biomass were identified as those either associated with heavy grazing or with deep mixing and corresponding low light levels. In most cases phytoplankton in the <20-μm size classes dominated. Integrated biomass to 100 m ranged from 7.1 to 28.0 mg.m−2 and correlated positively with surface chlorophyll-a concentrations. Mean PBmax (photosynthetic capacity) and αB (initial slope of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve) were 1.25±0.19 mgC. mgChla −1.h−1 and 0.042±0.009 mgC.mgChla −1.h−1.(μmol.m−2.s−1)−1 respectively. The mean index of photoadaptation,I k, was 32.2±4.0 μmol.m−2.s−1 and photoinhibition was found in all cases. Primary production was integrated to the critical depth (Z cr) at each production station and ranged from 15.6 to 41.5 mgC.m−2.d−1. It appears that, other than grazing intensity, the relationship between the critical depth and the mixing depth (Z mix) is an important factor as, ultimately, light availability due both to the late season and growing sea ice cover severely limits production during the austral autumn.  相似文献

The relationship between scale and body growth for emigrating Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, smolts was previously not understood and therefore was examined in this study using mark-recapture techniques. The size of smolts at time of recapture was significantly greater than when marked (P = 0.0002). The growth in length of smolts emigrating 5 km over an average of 20 days was 7.7 ± 6.1 mm per day. Instantaneous somatic growth (G body) ranged from 7.0 × 10−4 to 5.1 × 10−3 (mean = 2.7 × 10−3 ± 1.3 × 10−3). The mean number of plus growth circuli present per scale was significantly greater for smolts when recaptured compared to when marked (P = 0.0014). The instantaneous growth rate of scales (G scale) ranged from 1.4 × 10−3 to 11.5 × 10−3 (mean = 6.6 × 10−3 ± 4.3 × 10−3). The relationship between body size and scale radius showed positive allometry rather than isometry. The relationship of G scale with G body showed positive allometry indicating that scales grew at a slightly faster rate than the body during the emigratory period.  相似文献

Community respiration in hyporheic sediments (HCR) was studied in a characteristic riffle-pool-sequence of a mountain stream. HCR activity at the riffle site strongly exceeded that at the corresponding pool site with a mean ratio of 5.3. The vertical distribution of HCR activity was homogeneous in the pool, while there was a distinct maximum in the uppermost layer in the riffle. Similarly, the spatial distribution of certain fractions of particulate organic matter (POM), and their turnover, was largely determined by stream morphology. Mean annual HCR per unit area of stream bed was estimated as 1.71 g O2 m−2 d−1. Hence, HCR contributes significantly to total heterotrophic activity in streams, thus enhancing the relative importance of heterotrophic processes in running waters containing hyporheic zones.  相似文献

Codium fragile (Suringar) Hariot is an edible green alga farmed in Korea using seed stock produced from regeneration of isolated utricles and medullary filaments. Experiments were conducted to reveal the optimal conditions for nursery culture and out-growing of C. fragile. Sampling and measurement of underwater irradiance were carried out at farms cultivating C. fragile at Wando, on the southwestern coast of Korea, from October 2004 to August 2005. Growth of erect thalli and underwater irradiance were measured over a range of depths for three culture stages. During the nursery cultivation stage (Stage I), growth rate was greatest at 0.5 m depth (0.055 ± 0.032 mm day−1), where the average midday irradiance over 60 days was 924 ± 32 μmol photons m−2 s−1. During the pre-main cultivation stage (Stage II), the greatest growth rate occurred at a depth of 2 m (0.113 ± 0.003 mm day−1) with an average irradiance of 248 ± 116 μmol photons m−2 s−1. For the main cultivation stage (Stage III) of the alga, thalli achieved the greatest increase in biomass at 1 m depth (7.2 ± 1.0 kg fresh wt m−1). These results suggest that optimal growth at each cultivation stages of C. fragile could be controlled by depth of cultivation rope.  相似文献

The processes driving primary productivity and its impacts on fish production were investigated in field trials in eight seasonal earthen wetland ponds ‘Fingerponds’ (192 m2) in Uganda between 2003 and 2005. The ponds were stocked by the seasonal flood with predominantly Oreochromis spp. at densities ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 fish m−2. Chicken manure (521, 833 or 1,563 kg ha−1) was applied fortnightly. Results showed that primary productivity was enhanced with maximum average net primary productivity (±Standard Error) of 11.7 (±2.5) g O2 m−2 day−1 at the Gaba site and 8.3 (±1.5) g O2 m−2 day−1 at the Walukuba site. Net fish yields were higher in manured ponds with up to 2,670 kg ha−1 yield for a 310 day growth period compared to less than 700 kg ha−1 in unmanured ponds. Fish production was limited mainly by high recruitment, falling water levels, light limitation from high suspended solids and turbidity, and low zooplankton biomass. It was concluded that Fingerponds have a high potential for sustainable fish production and can contribute to the alleviation of protein shortages amongst the riparian communities around Lake Victoria. Production can be enhanced further with improved stock management.  相似文献

Movement of the fluvial form of red-spotted masu salmon (1+ and older),Oncorhynchus masou rhodurus, was studied using mark-recapture methods in a Japanese mountain stream. Most (63–91%) adult salmon were recaptured in the pool in which they were marked. The rest of the salmon moved upstream or downstream <20m during the non-breeding period. The proportion of the salmon moving increased slightly during the breeding period, but did not exceed 66%. The distance moved was also more variable during this period. The proportion of the smaller salmon which moved was larger than that of the larger fish during the non-breeding period. Conversely, during the breeding period, larger fish moved more frequently. Sedentary behaviour and local movements of adult salmon seem to be affected by their social relationships.  相似文献

In order to determine the seasonal growth and biomass ofTrapa japonica Flerov, field observations were carried out at Ojaga-ike Pond, Chiba, Japan, during 1979 and 1980. In spring, the plant showed exponential growth (c. 0.080 g g−1 day−1) and shoot elongation was as rapid as 10 cm day−1. The plant attained its maximum biomass (380.5±35.1 g m−2) in late August, and about 50% of this was concentrated in the topmost 30-cm stratum (645.7±33.1 g m−3); maximum total stem length exceeded 6m. The plant produced large (500–800 mg per fruit), but small numbers of nut-like fruit (maximum, 5 fruits per rosette). Defoliation occurred almost linearly with time at a rate of 30.6 leaves m−2 day−1; annual net leaf production was estimated to be about twice as large as the seasonal maximum leaf biomass. While the number of leaves per rosette showed moderate seasonal change, rosette density, rosette area and leaf dry weight changed considerably during the year. From the negative log-log correlation between mean total leaf dry weight per rosette and rosette density, density-dependent rosette growth was assumed. The cause of the wide spread of this species in aquatic habitats is briefly discussed in terms of its seed size and morphology.  相似文献

A process-based carbonate budget was used to compare carbonate framework production at two reef sites subject to varying degrees of fluvial influence in Rio Bueno, Jamaica. The turbid, central embayment was subjected to high rates of fluvial sediment input, framework accretion was restricted to ≤30 m, and net carbonate production was 1,887 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1. Gross carbonate production (GCP) was dominated by scleractinians (97%), particularly by sediment-resistant species, e.g. Diploria strigosa on the reef flat (<2 m). Calcareous encrusters contributed very little carbonate. Total bioerosion removed 265 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1 and was dominated by microborers. At the clear-water site, net carbonate production was 1,236 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1; the most productive zone was on the fore-reef (10 m). Corals accounted for 82% of GCP, and encrusting organisms 16%. Bioerosion removed 126 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1 and was dominated by macroborers. Total fish and urchin grazing was limited throughout (≤20 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1). The study demonstrates that: (1) carbonate production and net reef accretion can occur where environmental conditions approach or exceed perceived threshold levels for coral survival; and (2) although live coral cover (and carbonate production rates) were reduced on reef-front sites along the North Jamaican coast, low population densities of grazing fish and echinoids to some extent offset this, thus maintaining positive carbonate budgets.  相似文献

Although sea urchins are critical for controlling macroalgae on heavily fished coral reefs, high densities threaten reefs, as urchins are also prodigous bioeroders. This study examined urchin population characteristics, bioerosion rates, their fish predators (Labridae), and potential competitors (Scaridae) on unprotected reefs and a reef within a marine protected area (MPA) in the lagoonal regions off Belize. Urchin density (<1 m−2) and bioerosion rates (∼0.2 kg CaCO3 m−2 year−1) were lowest and members of the Labridae were the highest (∼20 fish 200 m−3) within the MPA, while several unprotected reefs had higher (∼18–40 m−2) urchin densities, lower Labridae abundances (1–3 fish 200 m−3), and bioerosion rates ranging from ∼0.3–2.6 kg CaCO3 m−2 year−1. Urchin abundances were inversely related to Labridae (wrasses and hogfish) densities; however, on reef ridges, low algal cover (∼15%), small urchin size (∼14 mm), and low proportion of organic material in urchin guts suggested food limitation. Both top–down (predation) and bottom–up factors (food limitation) likely contribute to the control of urchins, predominantly Echinometra viridis, off Belize, thereby potentially diminishing the negative impacts of bioerosion activities by urchins.  相似文献

Omnivorous fish, such as the central stoneroller minnow (Campostoma anomalum(Rafinesque)), and crayfish often play important roles in the trophic dynamics of streams. The trophic role of these two omnivores has not been compared within a system even though they both consume algae, detritus and invertebrates and often co-occur in streams in the Midwestern United States. Natural abundance of 15N and 13C isotopes and a whole stream 15N-labeled ammonium chloride release were used to compare the trophic ecology of the central stoneroller minnow (Campostoma anomalum (Rafinesque)) and two species of crayfish (Orconectes neglectus (Faxon) and Orconectes nais (Faxon)) in a tallgrass prairie stream. The 15N and 13C values of Orconectes spp. were more similar to coarse benthic organic matter (CBOM) and filamentous green algae than to invertebrates, fine benthic organic matter (FBOM), and periphyton. Values for 15N and 13C in C. anomalum were more similar to grazer and collector invertebrates and filamentous green algae than to FBOM and periphyton. Results from a 15N tracer release also indicated a portion of algae and/or invertebrates were a component of nitrogen assimilated in Orconectes spp. and C. anomalum diets. Gut contents of C. anomalum were also analyzed. In contrast to stable isotope data, amorphous detritus was a significant component of C. anomalum guts, followed by diatoms and filamentous green algae. A significant percentage of invertebrate material was found in C. anomalum guts sampled in the spring. Experiments were conducted in artificial streams to determine if Orconectes spp. and C. anomalum could reduce epilithic algal biomass in small streams. Algal biomass on clay tile substrata was decreased relative to controls in artificial stream channels containing O. neglectus (3.4 fold, p=0.0002), C. anomalum (2.1 fold, p=0.0012), and both species combined (3.0 fold, p=0.0003). Results indicate that Orconectes spp. are functioning more as algal and detrital processors than as predators in Kings Creek. Isotope and gut content data show that C. anomalum includes invertebrates as well as algae and detritus in its diet. Both species have the potential to affect algal biomass and are important omnivores in the stream food web.  相似文献

The growth and production of the Baltic clam Macoma balthica in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea were studied. The shell length of M. balthica reached 23.5 mm, the maximum age was 13+ years. The linear growth was described by the von Bertalanffy equation for shallow-water area (depths 9–40 m): L τ = 23.99(1 − e −0.1293(τ − (−0.9578))), and for the deep-water area (41–81 m): L τ = 20.61(1 − e −0.1813(τ − (−0.5608))). The annual production was lower (25.35 ± 1.72 kJ/m2) in the shallow-water area than in the deep-water area (71.23 ± 4.48 kJ/m2), with values of P s /B ratio 0.44 and 0.38, respectively.  相似文献

The increase of ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280–400 nm) caused by stratospheric ozone depletion has profound effects on aquatic ecosystems. High-altitude lakes in the Yunnan Plateau are exposed to high intensities of UVR and contain low concentrations of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Thirty-eight lakes in the Yunnan Plateau with elevations from 1291 to 3809 m above sea level were investigated to study CDOM concentrations and possible effects of UVR on the lake ecosystem. The attenuation of UVR in the Yunnan Plateau lakes was calculated from the absorption coefficient of CDOM based on an empirical relationship from lakes in the Alps and Pyrenees mountains. Absorption coefficients [α(λ)] at 320 nm [α(320)] ranged from 0.52 to 14.05 m−1 (mean ± standard deviation, 4.40 ± 3.85 m−1) and at 380 nm [α(380)] from 0.05 to 4.51 m−1 (1.40 ± 1.30 m−1). The exponential slope coefficient for the relationship of wavelength to α(λ) ranged from 16.2 to 41.4 μm−1 (21.74 ± 4.93 μm−1) over the 280–400 nm interval. Normalized fluorescence emission (NFLU) at 450 nm from an excitation wavelength of 355 nm, F n(355), averaged 7.93 ± 3.22 NFLU. A significant positive relationship was found between α(355) and F n(355). The estimated diffuse attenuation coefficients of UV-B (320 nm) and UV-A (380 nm) ranged from 0.55 to 15.77 m−1 and from 0.24 to 6.73 m−1; the corresponding 1% attenuation depths ranged from 0.29 to 8.44 m and from 0.68 to 19.12 m. Twenty-five of 38 lakes had 1% UV-B attenuation depths of 1.5 m or more. The median 1% attenuation depth was 28.8% of the sampling depth for UV-B radiation and 60% for UV-A. In addition to CDOM, chlorophyll α (Chla) and total suspended matter (TSM) also may contribute to attenuation of UVR.  相似文献

Movements of resident brown trout (age 2+ to 9+ years) and young Atlantic salmon (age 1+), stocked as fry, were studied in July, August and September in a coastal stream in northern Norway. Between 85 and 89% of the brown trout were recaptured in the study area (346m, 1326m2) within 45m of their release point throughout the investigation period. Most specimens had moved less than 150m. Trout movements were related to local variation in density. Trout occupying those sections of stream with the lowest fish densities (5.3–10.9 fish 100m?2) had a significantly lower movement rate than fish from sections with densities between 13.7 and 31.5 fish 100m?2. Trout that moved from their marking section were significantly larger than specimens that did not leave their original site. There was a significant correlation between permanence of station each month and the mean water level that month. The majority of the trout (47%) were caught at undercut stream banks or at sites in the proximity of these. A decrease in water level during the study period resulted in a high loss (36%) of such habitat, probably forcing some individuals to move. The recapture data indicate that the trout population consists of one small (c. 15–20%) mobile, and one large sedentary component. Young salmon displayed high station permanence in July and August (93% and 96%). However, in the autumn they exhibited a significant downstream movement, and only 73% were recaptured within their release section. This movement was significantly higher for larger specimens, and is thought to occur because of a pre-winter change in habitat, initiated by a decline in stream temperature. In contrast to trout, salmon in sections containing the lowest densities (22.0–25.0 fish 100m?2) did not show significantly lower movement rates when compared with salmon at higher densities (32.2–46.3 and 51.8–60.6 fish 100m?2). The spatial distribution of young salmon indicated the formation of territorial mosaics over the stream bed, which are thought to reduce intraspecific competition.  相似文献

To study growth rates, movements and estimate population size of shortfin eels Anguilla australis in a small lake (2·5 ha) near Christchurch, New Zealand, 617 A. australis were tagged with PIT tags. Tag retention was high (95%) and over the seven recapture events spread over 2 years, 55% of tagged A. australis were recaptured. Growth of recaptured A. australis averaged 13·1 mm year?1 and declined slightly with increasing total length. Distance moved from original capture site increased with increasing time at large. Population estimates of A. australis > 400 mm (susceptible to capture by fyke net) from recaptures of individuals averaged 1451 A. australis, with a biomass of 170 kg ha?1. An average of 6·6% of the estimated total population matured as male silver A. australis each year. Results from radio‐tracking of four A. australis gave an average nightly foraging area of 2780 m2, and there was no apparent preference for inshore movement (within 5–6 m of the shoreline) or offshore movement. Fyke‐net efficiency (total catch relative to the estimated total population available to each net) measured over four consecutive nights fishing was 88%. The lack of precision of the shoreline triangulation system used, ±10 m, meant that the positional data were considered too coarse to be used in a proposed novel population estimation technique based on determining population size within foraging areas.  相似文献

Habitat composition and connectivity within a stream vary with changing flows but the influence of changing flow on habitat use by fish is not well understood. Meso- and microhabitat surveys were used to investigate habitat use by bullhead (Cottus gobio Linnaeus) in response to discharge variation in a small tributary of the Upper Severn, England. Mesohabitat mapping surveys were carried out over a range of summer flows (0.016–0.216 m3 s−1) and were coupled with direct underwater observations (snorkelling) of fish location. Five mesohabitat types—glides, runs, riffles, chutes and pools—were present in the reach at all flows surveyed and ‘backwaters’ were found at three flows. The macro-morphology of the reach comprised six riffle–pool sequences divided into 27 mesohabitats with the maximum diversity (23 mesohabitats) at intermediate flows (Q 43) and only 15 mesohabitats at Q 95. Despite low numbers of fish (N = 78), bullhead displayed a strong association (51% of the fish) with glides—relatively deep habitats having high rates of velocity increase with flow. However, 54% of the fish were observed in two large, persistent mesohabitats, a glide (34%) and a pool (20%), both located below a faster flowing mesohabitat. Habitat use curves based upon micro-habitat data showed bullhead favoured low velocities (<0.30 m s−1), depths less than 0.30 m and a cobble substratum. This study illustrates the value of cross-scale investigations in linking fish ecology, flow and physical habitat variability and suggests mesohabitat size, persistence and arrangement may influence fish distribution.  相似文献

Antarctic marine organisms are considered to have extremely limited ability to respond to environmental temperature change. However, here we show that the Antarctic notothenioid fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki is an exception to this theory. P. borchgrevinki was able to acclimate its resting metabolic rate and resting ventilation frequency after a 5°C rise in temperature. Acute exposure to 4°C resulted in an elevation in metabolic rate (57.8 ± 4.79 mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and resting ventilation rate (40.38 ± 1.61 breaths min−1) compared with fish at −1°C (metabolic rate 34.45 ± 3.12 mg O2 kg−1 h−1; ventilation rate 29.88 ± 3.72 breaths min−1). However, after a 1-month acclimation period, there was no significant difference in the metabolic rate (cold fish 29.52 ± 3.01; warm fish 31.13 ± 2.30 mg O2 kg−1 h−1), or the resting ventilation rate (cold fish 28.75 ± 0.98; warm fish 34.25 ± 2.28 breaths min−1) of cold and warm acclimated fish. Acclimation changes to the rate of oxygen consumption following exhaustive exercise were complex. The pattern of oxygen consumption during recovery from exhaustive exercise was not significantly different in either cold or warm acclimated fish.  相似文献
