This paper studies the impacts of antemortem ingestion of alcoholic beverages by the domestic rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus L., on postmortem successional patterns of insects during winter and summer 2018 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Insect samples were collected from the carcasses of rabbits fed alcoholic beverages as well as untreated rabbits for 15 days postmortem during two successional studies in each season. The results showed that, during both seasons, the decomposition process for the carcasses of rabbits fed alcoholic beverages antemortem was one to two days longer. The results also showed, however, that alcoholic beverages did not affect insect succession patterns in either season. In fact, the number of insects appeared to be influenced by the ambient temperature during the two seasons, with 4415 insects in the winter compared to 1033 insects in the summer. In total, 30 insect taxa were collected during the winter study from the carcasses of rabbits fed alcoholic beverages antemortem; while 26 of these same taxa were collected from the carcasses of the untreated rabbits. Among the treated rabbits, those fed 25 ml alcoholic beverages treated attracted the highest number of insect taxa (24 taxa). In the summer study, 21 insect taxa were collected in total, 19 from the carcasses of the alcohol-treated rabbits and 13 from untreated rabbits. Among the treated rabbits, those fed 50 ml alcoholic beverages attracted the highest number of insect taxa (14 taxa). These results contribute to the understanding of the factors affecting the use of insects in medical investigations, given that alcoholic beverages are a common addictive agent.  相似文献

Temporal separations among species greatly enhance the species' coexistence, especially in insect communities inhabiting temporally unstable, yet resource‐rich, ephemeral habitats like dung or carrion. The insect communities inhabiting ephemeral habitats consist of two components, the internal community dwelling within the substrate (mostly Coleoptera), and the surface community inhabiting the habitat's outer rim (mostly adult Diptera). In contrast to the internal community, the surface community is very rarely studied. We present here the first quantitative study of temporal trends in the surface community of coprophilous dipteran adults. Using artificially created 1.5 L cow dung pats, we studied the succession and seasonality in the surface community during six sampling periods in 2011 and 2012. In total, we sampled 13579 adults of dung‐visiting Diptera. Both the abundance and species richness decreased rapidly throughout the succession, and were highest during summer. Along the successional gradient, the community was separated into two main groups (early and late) and four subgroups: (i) species occurring during the first few hours (mainly Calyptratae: Diptera); (ii) species occurring between the first and second days; (iii) species occurring between the second and third days (mainly Acalyptratae: Diptera); and (iv) species with optima after the third day of dung pat existence (mainly Nematocera). The earliest and latest successional groups, occurring mainly during spring–autumn, were seasonally separated from the two mid‐successional groups, occurring during summer. The ecologically similar species displayed detectable seasonal micro‐optima, which likely facilitate their coexistence. There was a high overall similarity in temporal patterns between dung and carrion surface communities.  相似文献

Seasonal dynamics of cladoceran and copepod zooplankton were studied over a one‐year period in five permanent ponds of a cutaway peatland, situated in the Danube−Tisza Interfluve, Central Hungary. 17 cladoceran, 11 cyclopoid copepod and 6 harpacticoid copepod species were identified and most of them were typical of small lowland ponds. Nevertheless, some taxa like Cyclops insignis, Ceriodaphnia setosa and Macrocyclops distinctus are considered to be rare in Hungary. The microcrustacean assemblages exhibited apparent seasonal succession with typical seasonal species. There appears to be at least two main successional patterns in the five ponds. After general cyclopoid copepod dominance in winter (Cyclops strenuus and Cyclops insignis), at sites with higher proportion of open water and submerged vegetation, spring was characterized by the dominance of the large cladoceran Daphnia curvirostris, which declined during summer, when microcrustacean assemblages composed mainly of smaller, littoral cladocerans. At these sites, species richness and diversity reached their maximum in autumn. In the case of duckweed covered ponds, succession led to less diverse autumn assemblages with fewer species, dominated by Simocephalus exspinosus. Our results draw the attention to the importance of long‐term investigations and the often neglected winter sampling in the accurate evaluation of species richness (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract Using microscopic analysis of faecal pellets, we compared the seasonal and successional patterns of food resource use of two Australian native rodents, the eastern chestnut mouse (Pseudomys gracilicaudatus) and the swamp rat (Rattus lutreolus) in a coastal heathland at Myall Lakes National Park, New South Wales. Using the Mantel test, the diets of the two mammal species were significantly different in autumn and winter but not in spring and summer. Further, the two species showed differential use of resources at the young and middle-aged stages of vegetation succession following fire. The mean dietary overlaps for pairs of individuals between the two species were relatively high in all seasons and successional stages, but they were significantly lower than those for pairs of individuals within each species in autumn and winter, and at the young and middle successional stages. Analysis of dietary niche position (γ) and breadth (β) showed lower γ and larger β for P. gracilicaudatus than for R. lutreolus, confirming previous observations that R. lutreolus is more specialized, and less opportunistic in diet than P. gracilicaudatus. Overall, the dietary separations of the two species were less marked in canonical space than they were for specific seasons and successional stages. These results, together with previous studies, indirectly suggest that while these two mammal species may be partitioning diet in autumn and winter in the middle stages, for spring and summer in the old successional stage they might need to partition habitats to facilitate their coexistence. Our results indicate that the local community is more dynamic and complex than previously thought and that other mechanisms of coexistence (e.g. temporal rotation of food resources) may be operating rather than traditional habitat and diet separation.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that phytophagous insects would have a strong top-down effect on early successional plant communities and would thus alter the course of succession. To test this hypothesis, we suppressed above-ground insects at regular intervals with a broad-spectrum insecticide through the first 3 years of old-field succession at three widely scattered locations in central New York State. Insect herbivory substantially reduced total plant biomass to a similar degree at all three sites by reducing the abundance of meadow goldenrod, Solidago altissima. As a result, Euthamia graminifolia dominated control plots whereas S. altissima dominated insecticide-treated plots by the third year of succession. S. altissima is the dominant old-field herbaceous species in this region but typically requires at least 5 years to become dominant. Past explanations for this delay have implicated colonization limitation whereas our data demonstrate that insect herbivory is a likely alternative explanation. A widespread, highly polyphagous insect, the xylem-tapping spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius, appeared to be the herbivore responsible for the reduction in standing crop biomass at all three sites. Insect herbivory typically caused little direct leaf tissue loss for the ten plant species we examined, including S. altissima. Consequently, the amount of leaf area removed was not a reliable indicator of the influence of insect herbivory on standing crop biomass or on early succession. Overall, we found a strong top-down effect of insect herbivores on biomass at several sites, so our results may be broadly applicable. These findings run counter to generalizations that top-down effects of herbivores, particularly insects, are weak in terrestrial systems. These generalizations may not apply to insects, such as spittlebugs, that can potentially mount an effective defense (i.e., spittle) against predators and subsequently reach relatively high abundance on common plant species. Our results suggest that insect herbivory may play an important but often overlooked role during early old-field succession. Received: 26 December 1998 / Accepted: 3 April 1999  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of cyanobacterial blooms on periphyton algal succession and to identify the factors determining community dynamics in a tropical hypereutrophic reservoir. A variety of factors affecting periphytic community structure were identified at two different sites with domestic sewage and spring water inflows and two climatic periods. Microscope glass slides were used to assess periphyton growth. Sampling was carried out at short regular intervals (3–5 days) over 30 days. Climatic periods were limnologically distinct. The rainy period was characterized by an intense cyanobacterial bloom and the dry period by a less intense bloom. Periphyton biomass and growth tended to increase with colonization time during the dry period. Cyanobacteria and Bacillariophyceae were the most representative groups in the rainy period whereas Bacillariophyceae was dominant in the dry period. Community species had successional patterns in both climatic periods. The successional trajectory for sites 1 (domestic sewage) and 2 (spring water) was different in the dry period but similar in the rainy period. We concluded that the community structure over 30 days of colonization under hypereutrophic conditions was primarily determined by seasonal scale (bloom intensity), followed by successional scale (autogenic), and, finally, by the local scale (spring water and sewage inflow). Positive periphyton biological response (higher biomass and algal growth, dominance of diatoms, Cyanobacteria reduction) during small variations of bloom intensity may indicate rapid re-establishment of the community during recovery of the ecosystem.  相似文献

1. Variation in spring phenology – like tree budburst – affects the structure of insect communities, but impacts of autumn phenology have been neglected. Many plant species have recently delayed their autumn phenology, and the timing of leaf senescence may be important for herbivorous insects. 2. This study explored how an insect herbivore community associated with Quercus robur is influenced by variation in autumn phenology. For this, schools were asked to record, across the range of oak in Sweden, the autumn phenology of oaks and to conduct a survey of the insect community. 3. To tease apart the relative impacts of climate from that of tree phenology, regional tree phenology was first modelled as a function of regional climate, and the tree‐specific deviation from this relationship was then used as the metric of relative tree‐specific phenology. 4. At the regional scale, a warmer climate postponed oak leaf senescence. This was also reflected in the insect herbivore community: six out of 15 taxa occurred at a higher incidence and five out of 18 taxa were more abundant, in locations with a warmer climate. Similarly, taxonomic richness and herbivory were higher in warmer locations. 5. Trees with a relatively late autumn phenology had higher abundances of leaf miners (Phyllonorycter spp.). This caused lower community diversity and evenness on trees with later autumn phenology. 6. The findings of the present study illustrate that both regional climate‐driven patterns and local variation in oak autumn phenology contribute to shaping the insect herbivore community. Community patterns may thus shift with a changing climate.  相似文献

The change in the phenology of plants or animals reflects the response of living systems to climate change. Numerous studies have reported a consistent earlier spring phenophases in many parts of middle and high latitudes reflecting increasing temperatures with the exception of China. A systematic analysis of Chinese phenological response could complement the assessment of climate change impact for the whole Northern Hemisphere. Here, we analyze 1263 phenological time series (1960–2011, with 20+ years data) of 112 species extracted from 48 studies across 145 sites in China. Taxonomic groups include trees, shrubs, herbs, birds, amphibians and insects. Results demonstrate that 90.8% of the spring/summer phenophases time series show earlier trends and 69.0% of the autumn phenophases records show later trends. For spring/summer phenophases, the mean advance across all the taxonomic groups was 2.75 days decade?1 ranging between 2.11 and 6.11 days decade?1 for insects and amphibians, respectively. Herbs and amphibians show significantly stronger advancement than trees, shrubs and insect. The response of phenophases of different taxonomic groups in autumn is more complex: trees, shrubs, herbs and insects show a delay between 1.93 and 4.84 days decade?1, while other groups reveal an advancement ranging from 1.10 to 2.11 days decade?1. For woody plants (including trees and shrubs), the stronger shifts toward earlier spring/summer were detected from the data series starting from more recent decades (1980s–2000s). The geographic factors (latitude, longitude and altitude) could only explain 9% and 3% of the overall variance in spring/summer and autumn phenological trends, respectively. The rate of change in spring/summer phenophase of woody plants (1960s–2000s) generally matches measured local warming across 49 sites in China (= ?0.33, < 0.05).  相似文献

Groundwater level is crucial for wetland plant growth and reproduction, but the extent of its effect on plant growth can vary along with changed precipitation and temperature at different seasons. In this context, we investigated the effect of two groundwater levels (10 cm vs. 20 cm depth) on growth and reproductive parameters of Carex cinerascens, a dominant plant species in the Poyang Lake wetland, during three seasons (spring, summer, and autumn) and during two consecutive years (2015 and 2016). Carex cinerascens showed low stem number, height, and individual and population biomass in summer compared to spring and autumn. 10 cm groundwater level was overall more suitable for plant growth resulting in higher stem height and biomass. However, the interactive effect between groundwater level and season clearly demonstrated that the effect of groundwater level on plant growth occurred mainly in autumn. After the withering of the plant population in summer, we observed that C. cinerascens growth recovered in autumn to similar values observed in spring only with 10 cm groundwater level. Consequently, we could deduce that lowering groundwater level in the studied Poyang Lake wetland will negatively impact C. cinerascens regeneration and growth particularly during the second growth cycle occurring in autumn. Additionally, our results showed that, independently of the season and groundwater level, population biomass of C. cinerascens was lower during drier year. Altogether, our findings suggest that water limitation due to both reduction in precipitation and decreased groundwater level during the year can strongly impact plant communities.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an inter‐calibration between acoustic and gillnets sampling in two North African reservoirs according to seasons. Gillnets with multi‐mesh were designed for sampling fish in lakes while acoustic surveys were performed with a split beam Simrad EK60 echosounder. Sampling events were carried out during summer (September 2015), autumn (December 2015), winter (March 2016) and spring (June 2016) in two Tunisian reservoirs (Kasseb and Siliana) with different depths and shapes. Gillnet catches showed a high proportion of barbell whatever the seasons in Kasseb Reservoir, while at Siliana Reservoir, significant seasonal changes in relative abundances have been evidenced. The highest fish biomass of the entire water column was observed in winter daytime (103 kg/ha) in Kasseb Reservoir and in summer daytime (283 kg/ha) in Siliana Reservoir. Average biomass observed in autumn (December) for the two reservoirs were lower than the other seasons. During spring, density daytime values in Kasseb were higher than during nighttime while it was the opposite in summer and autumn. Fish densities detected in Kasseb Reservoir in vertical beaming was higher than those detected in horizontal beaming (p < .05). The longitudinal distribution of fish in the reservoirs showed that there is no clear trend in fish densities according to strata. High numbers of fish were detected in deep strata and big fish were located in the surface water near the dam of Kasseb Reservoir. A significant linear correlation was showed between acoustic density/NPUE and acoustic biomass/BPUE but the perfect correlation with the 1:1 fit was showed only between acoustic biomass/BPUE.  相似文献

Elevated testosterone levels can lower condition and increase parasites. We analysed testosterone in 84 blood samples of wild European badgers Meles meles collected at regular intervals (winter = mating season; spring = end of mating season; summer = minor mating peak; autumn = reproductive quiescence), and related variation to body condition, subcaudal gland secretion, parasite burden, and bite wounding. All males showed elevated levels in winter and low levels in autumn. In neither season did testosterone correlate with fitness-related parameters. However, two different endocrinological phenotypes existed in spring and summer. Whilst some males lowered their testosterone to levels comparable to autumnal quiescence (Type 1), others maintained elevated levels comparable to those during winter (Type 2). In spring and summer high levels were correlated with lower body condition and increased parasite burden, and Type 2 males tended to suffer higher mortality rates than Type 1. No animals older than 6 years adopted phenotype 2, indicating that males either switch phenotypes with age or that Type 2 results in lower life expectancy, evidencing the costs of male reproduction in badgers.  相似文献

1. Temporal isolation by cohort splitting is a life‐history mechanism that has been reported in many temperate insects, including those inhabiting freshwater habitats. Although the cohorts seem to maintain separate temporal niches in a specific location, the temporal isolation may be disrupted across a geographic gradient due to constraints imposed by seasonality. 2. This prediction was tested on two temporally isolated populations of the obligatory univoltine Lestes virens (Odonata, Lestidae) in north‐east Algeria. Although the two cohorts emerge at the same time in spring, one cohort reproduces in summer, while the second cohort estivates in summer and reproduces in autumn. A survey assessing the phenology and abundance was conducted on eight ponds across an elevational gradient (5–1012 m asl) using capture–mark–recapture and adult density sampling. 3. In all sites from low to high elevation, the species showed cohort splitting. The phenology of reproduction of both cohorts showed a delay with elevation, but the cline was 2.2 days for the summer cohort and 0.7 days for the autumn cohort per 100 m of elevation. Moreover, the density of adults in the autumn cohort was higher than that of summer cohort across the entire elevational range, and the difference increased with elevation. 4. These findings regarding the differential elevational cline in the phenology show that the temporal isolation of the two cohorts becomes narrower at high elevation, suggesting potential inter‐cohort temporal overlap at higher elevations. 5. The claim that the two cohorts of L. virens are true temporally isolated species needs further investigation.  相似文献

In 2001, Hamilton and Brown proposed a controversial hypothesis of handicap signalling to potential insect parasites as an adaptive explanation for autumn leaf colouration. In subsequent studies there has been little attention to the costs and benefits of early autumnal colour change. Yet, in an observational study by Hagen et al. (2003) it was demonstrated that birch trees [Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii Ehrhart (Betulaceae)] turning yellow early in autumn had less damage from insects chewing on leaves the subsequent summer. Here, two experiments are presented which test the mechanisms in this model. The first addresses the proposed defence of leaves of B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii by letting caterpillars of Epirrita autumnata Borkhausen (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), the birches’ most common insect parasites, choose between leaves from trees that either turned yellow late or early the foregoing autumn. The second experiment addresses whether adult female E. autumnata choose between early or late senescent (i.e., yellow or green) ‘twigs’ when ovipositing in autumn. We could not find evidence of preferences in either larvae or females, suggesting that timing of colour change in B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii is not a warning signal that elicits a response in E. autumnata.  相似文献

Information on genetic variation and its distribution in tropical plant populations relies mainly on studies of ground‐rooted species, while genetic information of epiphytic plants is still limited. Particularly, the effect of forest successional condition on genetic diversity and structure of epiphytes is scanty in the literature. We evaluated the genetic variation and spatial genetic structure of the epiphytic bromeliad Guzmania monostachia (Bromeliaceae, Tillandsioideae) in montane secondary forest patches in Costa Rica. The sampling design included plants on the same trees (i.e., populations), populations within forest patches and patches within secondary forest at two different successional stages (early vs. mid‐succession). Six microsatellites revealed low levels of population genetic variation (A = 2.06, AE = 1.61, HE = 0.348), a marked deficiency of heterozygotes (HO = 0.031) and high inbreeding (f = 0.908). Genetic differentiation was negligible among populations within the same forest patch, but moderate (GST = 0.123 ± 0.043) among forest patches. Genetic relatedness between individuals was significantly higher for plants located within the same forest patch and separated by <60 m and decreased as distance between plants increased, becoming significantly negative at distances >400 m. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed significant genetic variation between forest patches, but non‐significant variation between successional stages. The selfing breeding system and limited seed dispersal capabilities in G. monostachia could explain the observed levels and partitioning of genetic diversity at this geographic scale. However, these results also suggest that forest fragmentation is likely to influence the degree of local genetic structuring of epiphytic plants by limiting gene flow.  相似文献

Rotifer composition and density, chlorophyll-a content, secchi depth and temperature were investigated with high sampling frequency (every third day in summer, weekly in winter) in the eutrophic lake Bielersee from April 1981 to April 1982. Long intervals between sampling, especially from spring to autumn, lead to contradictory interpretation of abundance dynamics of both total rotifer community and single species. Short intervals between sampling revealed a sequence of mass developments of the different species. As an example, alternating gradation phases are shown for Synchaeta grandis and Synchaeta stylata.  相似文献

This study aimed at analyzing the phytoplankton structure and dynamics in Paso de las Piedras Reservoir, Argentina, through the study of dominant species, diversity and similarity in relation with the abiotic environment. Samples were collected weekly or biweekly (January 2004–June 2005) at four sampling stations. The reservoir experienced a seasonal progression in phytoplankton composition that underlines six successional periods, each one characterized by the dominance of one or a few species. Cyanobacteria, green algae and diatoms were the most important constituents of the reservoir’s phytoplankton. Cyanobacteria dominated during summer and early autumn, green algae during late autumn and early winter, and diatoms during winter and spring. A high abundance of R. lacustris (Cryptophyceae) was observed during late September and early October. The general pattern of species succession is coherent with the general model of plankton seasonal succession described by the PEG model; however, the major discrepancy is the extremely short clear water phase observed. Successional periods were associated with changes in abiotic variables, and they showed differences in ecological traits. Cyanobacteria-Dictyosphaerium, Cyclotella, Stephanodiscus and Anabaena-diatom periods were characterized by a low number of cells, high diversity, with both dominance and specific richness low. On the contrary, during Cyanobacteria and Cyanobacteria II periods, the highest abundance was observed associated with low diversity and high dominance.  相似文献

Patterns and mechanisms of plankton crustacean seasonal succession in the eutrophic freshwater Curonian lagoon (south-eastern Baltic Sea) were analysed on the basis of four-year (1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999) field sampling results. The seasonal crustacean zooplankton succession in the lagoon appears to be the consistent six-stage sequence of four distinct species complexes. Each stage is characterised by its individual species composition and quantitative characteristics. The uniform and periodic pattern of the limnetic zooplankton crustacean successional stages in the lagoon indicates that the seasonal succession of the limnetic zooplankton is not disturbed by unpredictable environmental fluctuations, such as brackish water inflows. Seasonal zooplankton succession is also comparatively uniform at a spatial scale. Not more than two adjacent successional stages were found across the northern part of the lagoon during each of 11 seasonal surveys. Comparison between monthly water residence time and dominant plankton crustacean species life cycle duration points to a more transitory plankton community in spring while in the summer it is not much influenced by lagoon hydrodynamics. Consequently, the Curonian lagoon crustacean community quite closely follows the Plankton Ecology Group (PEG)-described freshwater lake seasonal succession in summer and turns into a lentic-like system in spring and autumn.  相似文献

Diatom assemblages from sediment trap samples collected during ten intervals between October 2003 and October 2005 in Sacrower See (NE Germany) were related to limnological and meteorological data. Sacrower See is a dimictic, 38 m deep, hypertrophic lowland lake (29.5 m a.s.l.). We identified distinct seasonal and interannual changes of diatom assemblages for the studied period. Diatoms showed a typical seasonal succession for temperate, dimictic, and eutrophic lakes. Stephanodiscus parvus, S. hantzschii, S. neoastraea, and S. alpinus had high accumulation rates during winter and spring, whereas species of the genera Stephanodiscus, Fragilaria, and Nitzschia were the predominant diatoms during summer and autumn. In a Canonical Correspondence Analysis, precipitation, air and water temperatures, epilimnetic calcium, pH, and total phosphorus concentrations together explained 70% of the variance of the diatom data. Interannual variability in the diatom assemblages during the two sampled years mainly seems to reflect changes in the total phosphorus concentration and temperature and secondarily the onset of the growing season and of stratification. Sexual segregation is a common phenomenon in temperate bats, but little is known about driving forces or spatiotemporal patterns. Sexual segregation of the tree-dwelling Daubenton’s bat (Myotis daubentonii) was analyzed. Day roosts and foraging areas of radio-tracked animals were recorded during late spring, early summer, and late summer. Home ranges were calculated for each sex based on identified locations. Distance analysis between sex-specific roosts and foraging areas was conducted for each period. Mixed colonies were confirmed by trapping at roosts. Home range of males was larger (47.3 km2) than of females (9.7 km2). During late spring, distances between male and female roosts were larger (median = 715 m) than during early (median = 474 m) and late summer (median = 489 m). Distances between sex-specific foraging areas were larger during early summer (median = 2,134 m) than during both late spring (median = 1,116 m) and late summer (median = 628 m). The proportion of males in mixed groups increased from late spring (0.2 ± 0.1) to late summer (0.5 ± 0.2). These results show that sexual segregation is not static, but depends on energetic demand of individuals and mating willingness. A high energetic demand in females and low mating willingness in both sexes leads to distinct sexual segregation during late spring. When mating willingness increases, despite an increasing energy demand in males, sexes aggregate to mate.  相似文献
