Aerobic and anaerobic contribution to Wingate test performance in sprint and middle-distance runners

We investigated the aerobic and anaerobic contributions to performance during the Wingate test in sprint and middle-distance runners and whether they were related to the peak aerobic and anaerobic performances determined by two commonly used tests: the force-velocity test and an incremental aerobic exercise test. A group of 14 male competitive runners participated: 7 sprinters, aged 20.7 (SEM 1.3) years, competing in 50, 100 and 200-m events and 7 middle-distance runners, aged 20.0 (SEM 1.0) years, competing in 800, 1,000 and 1,500 m-events. The oxygen uptake (
) was recorded breath-by-breath during the test (30 s) and during the first 20 s of recovery. Blood samples for venous plasma lactate concentrations were drawn at rest before the start of the test and during the 20-min recovery period. During the Wingate test mean power (
) was determined and three values of mechanical efficiency, one individual and two arbitrary, 16% and 25%, were used to calculate the contributions of work by aerobic (
aer,ind,16%,25%) and anaerobic (
an,ind,16%,25%) processes. Peak anaerobic power (
an,peak) was estimated by the force-velocity test and maximal aerobic energy expenditure (
aer,peak) was determined during an incremental aerobic exercise test. During the Wingate test, the middle-distance runners had a significantly greater
than the sprinters (P < 0.001), who had significantly greater venous plasma lactate concentrations (P < 0.001). Moreover,
aer,ind,16%,25% were also significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the middle-distance runners [
aer,ind 45 (SEM 4) % vs 28 (SEM 2) %;
aer,16% 30 (SEM 3) % vs 19 (SEM 2) %;
aer,25% 46 (SEM 3) % vs 29 (SEM 2)%];
an,ind,16%,25% in the sprint runners (P < 0.05) [
an,ind 72 (SEM 3) % vs 55 (SEM 4) %;
an,16% 81 (SEM 2) % vs 70 (SEM 3) %;
an,25% 71 (SEM 2) % vs 54 (SEM 3) %]. The
aer,ind/
aer,peak and
×
an,ind/
an,peak ratios, however, were not significantly different between the two groups of athletes. These results would indicate that the sprinters and middle-distance runners used preferentially a metabolic system according to their speciality. Nevertheless, under the conditions of its experiment, they seemed to rely on the same percentage of both peak anaerobic and peak aerobic performance for a given exercise task. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the time-of-day effects on the offensive capability and aerobic performance in football game in young subjects. In a randomized order, participants realized the Yo–Yo intermittent recovery test in two test sessions and a football game situations (two 15-min games), interspersed by a verbalization sequence (3 min) at 08:00 and 17:00 h on separate days. A recovery period of 24 h was permitted between two consecutive test sessions. The results revealed diurnal variations on the maximal aerobic velocity during the Yo–Yo test (MAV) and the oral temperature with higher values in the afternoon than morning (p < 0.05). Concerning offensive capability, the numbers of scored goals were significantly higher at 17:00 h in comparison with 08:00 h (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference between 08:00 and 17:00 h for the kicked balls (shooting parameter). In conclusion, our findings suggest that performance was improved in the evening and the parameters (shooting and Scored goals) can be used as a model to describe the offensive capacity in football game depending on the time of day. 相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine mechanomyographic (MMG) and electromyographic (EMG) amplitude responses of the superficial quadriceps femoris muscles during the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT). Ten healthy adults (age 21 +/- 1.2 years) volunteered to perform the WAnT on a calibrated Monark 894E cycle ergometer while the EMG and MMG signals were recorded. The EMG and MMG amplitude and power output (W) values per 5-second segments of the test were averaged and normalized to the highest value found during the test, respectively. The statistical analysis indicated that EMG amplitude did not change significantly over the 30-second test, but W and MMG amplitude decreased significantly. There is dissociation between EMG and MMG amplitude over the 30-second anaerobic test, providing evidence that MMG amplitude could be used as a monitor of W during such a task. MMG amplitude could potentially be used as a direct monitor of mechanical activity, which could be of benefit to those who train athletes when a direct assessment of mechanical contribution from a given muscle to a fatiguing activity is desired (such as when monitoring an injury), but it must be studied under various conditions, such as the current study, before such applications are made. 相似文献

The relationship between the amount of work (Wlim) performed at the end of constant-power exhausting exercise and exhaustion time (tlim) has been studied for supramaximal exercise [105%, 120%, 135% and 150% of the individual maximal aerobic power, (MAP)] performed on a Monark cycle ergometer in nine men. The Wlim--tlim relationship was described by a linear relationship (Wlim = a + b . tlim). Intercept a was roughly equivalent to the work produced during a 1-min exercise performed at MAP. Slope b was equal to 79% of MAP. Intercept a has been correlated with the total amount of work (AW) performed during a 30-s all-out test supposed to assess anaerobic capacity. Intercept a was significantly (p less than 0.05) correlated with AW. The anaerobic capacity was not depleted at the end of the all-out test, as the mechanical power at the 30th s of this test was approximately equal to twice MAP. However, AW was significantly higher than intercept a. It was likely that the value of intercept a was an underestimation of the maximal anaerobic capacity because of the inertia of the aerobic metabolism. Indeed, an exponential model of the Wlim--tlim relationship, which takes the interia of the aerobic metabolism into account, shows that a linear approximation of the Wlim--tlim relationship yields a systematic underestimation of the anaerobic capacity. Consequently, intercept a of the Wlim--tlim relationship is not a more accurate estimation of the anaerobic capacity than the AW performed during a 30-s all-out test.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The effect of the passage of time on the contribution of initial response-outcome associations to subsequent instrumental performance was explored in three experiments with rats using outcome devaluation. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that a response that had been trained first with one outcome and then given identical training with a second outcome was more sensitive to devaluation of the second outcome than the first if the two training episodes were separated in time. Experiment 3 showed that inserting a delay between training with the second outcome and testing after outcome devaluation appeared to mitigate this effect of temporally separating first and second outcome training. Inserting this delay also made a response slightly more sensitive to devaluation of the first outcome than the second when there was no delay between the two training episodes. These results suggest that the passage of time can shift the balance between the contributions of first and second trained outcomes to instrumental performance. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of time of day on visuospatial attention in trained subjects. We used the line-bisecting task. The protocol involved 30 healthy volunteer female soccer players (age: 21.1 ± 2.1 years, level of experience: 8.1 ± 3.2 years, height: 1.7 ± 0.03 cm, weight: 59.2 ± 3.49 kg). They performed two-test sessions at different times of day, 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. The results showed a significant time-of-day effect on line-bisecting performance, with a better precision in the evening than in the morning. The rightward error observed in the morning was reversed in the evening. An interaction between time of day x length was also observed, indicating that the difference in performance between the morning and the evening increased with the length of the line. We conclude that activities that require better visuospatial performance should be programed to take place in the evening. 相似文献

To compare physiological responses and propulsion technique of able bodied subjects with no prior experience of wheelchairs (AB) and wheelchair dependent subjects (WD), ten AB and nine WD performed a 30-s sprint test in a wheelchair ergometer. The WD had spinal cord injuries with a lesion at T8 or lower. The WD and AB did not show significantly different physiological responses. The power values averaged for the right wheel over the 30 s of the test were 50.2 (SD 14.7) W and 48.0 (SD 4.4) W for WD and AB, respectively. No significant differences in torque application could be discerned, although WD subjects seemed to have a more flattened torque curve with a smaller negative deflection at the beginning of the push. The WD applied a significantly higher horizontal propulsive force to the handrims but did not apply force more effectively. The percentages of effective force to total propulsive force were 61 (SD 16)% for WD and 57 (SD 4)% for AB. With regard to the kinematic parameters, AB followed the handrims significantly longer than WD (end angle AB 65°, WD 44°), started the push phase with their arms more in retroflexion and flexed their trunks further forward. The AB did however show a movement pattern comparable to that of wheelchair athletes measured in a comparable experiment. It could not be decided conclusively that inexperience in wheelchair propulsion led to a less effective propulsion technique. Despite the selection of WD with respect to lesion level, interindividual differences in terms of level of training may have been responsible for the absence of significant results. 相似文献

The intent of this study was to evaluate relative and absolute reliability of the 20-s anaerobic test (WAnT20) versus the WAnT30 and to verify how far the various indices of the 30-s Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT30) could be predicted from the WAnT20 data in male athletes. The participants were Exercise Science majors (age: 21.5±1.6 yrs, stature: 0.183±0.08 m, body mass: 81.2±10.9 kg) who participated regularly in team sports. In Phase I, 41 participants performed duplicate WAnT20 and WAnT30 tests to assess reliability. In Phase II, 31 participants performed one trial each of the WAnT20 and WAnT30 to determine the ability of the WAnT20 to predict components of the WAnT30. In Phase III, 31 participants were used to cross-validate the prediction equations developed in Phase II. Respective intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) for peak power output (PPO) (ICC = 0.98 and 0.95) and mean power output (MPO) (ICC 0.98 and 0.90) did not differ significantly between WAnT20 and WAnT30. ICCs for minimal power output (POmin) and fatigue index (FI) were poor for both tests (range 0.53 to 0.76). Standard errors of the means (SEM) for PPO and MPO were less than their smallest worthwhile changes (SWC) in both tests; however, POmin and FI values were “marginal,” with SEM values greater than their respective SWCs for both tests values. Stepwise regression analysis showed that MPO had the highest coefficient of predictability (R = 0.97), with POmin and FI considerable lower (R = 0.71 and 0.41 respectively). Cross-validation showed insignificant bias with limits of agreement of 0.99±1.04, 6.5±92.7 W, and 1.6±9.8% between measured and predicted MPO, POmin, and FI, respectively. WAnT20 offers a reliable and valid test of leg anaerobic power in male athletes and could replace the classic WAnT30. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of a practice effect on the Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT). Twenty-five young adult men (mean age = 20 years) performed 2 trials of the WAnT, which were separated by 7 days. Mean peak power (PP) and mean power (MP) for trials I and II were compared using a 1-way repeated measures analysis of variance to determine if a practice effect existed. Mean PP and MP scores were significantly higher (p < 0.025) on trial II (867.64 and 634.68 W for PP and MP, respectively) than on trial I (764.48 and 604.92 W), indicating that a practice effect occurred. Effect size (Cohen's d) for PP and MP was 0.72 and 0.35, indicating a large effect and small effect, respectively. Therefore, at least 1 full administration should be performed prior to a baseline power output measurement. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to find out whether a low-carbohydrate diet (L-CHO) affects: (1) the capacity for all-out anaerobic
exercise, and (2) hormonal and metabolic responses to this type of exercise. To this purpose, eight healthy subjects underwent
a 30-s bicycle Wingate test preceded by either 3 days of a controlled mixed diet (130 kJ/kg of body mass daily, 50% carbohydrate,
30% fat, 20% protein) or 3 days of an isoenergetic L-CHO diet (up to 5% carbohydrate, 50% fat, 45% protein) in a randomized
order. Before and during 1 h after the exercise venous blood samples were taken for measurement of blood lactate (LA), β-hydroxybutyrate
(β-HB), glucose, adrenaline (A), noradrenaline (NA) and insulin levels. Oxygen consumption (V˙O2) was also determined. It was found that the L-CHO diet diminished the mean power output during the 30-s exercise bout [533
(7) W vs 581 (7) W, P < 0.05] without changing the maximal power attained during the first or second 5-s interval of the exercise. In comparison
with the data obtained after the consumption of a mixed diet, after the consumption of a L-CHO diet resting plasma concentrations
of β-HB [2.38 (0.18) vs 0.23 (0.01) mmol · l−1, P < 0.001] and NA [4.81 (0.68) vs 2.2 (0.31) nmol · l−1, P < 0.05] were higher, while glucose [4.6 (0.1) vs 5.7 (0.2) mmol · l−1, P < 0.05] and insulin concentrations [11.9 (0.9) vs 21.8 (1.8) mU · l−1] were lower. The 1-h post-exercise excess of V˙O2 [9.1 (0.25) vs 10.6 (0.25) l, P < 0.05], and blood LA measured 3 min after the exercise [9.5 (0.4) vs 10.6 (0.5) mmol · l−1, P < 0.05] were lower following the L-CHO treatment, whilst plasma NA and A concentrations reached higher values [2.24 (0.40) vs
1.21 (0.13) nmol · l−1 and 14.30 (1.41) vs 8.20 (1.31) nmol · l−1, P < 0.01, respectively]. In subjects on the L-CHO diet, the plasma β-HB concentration decreased quickly after exercise, attaining
≈30% of the pre-exercise value within 60 min, while insulin and glucose levels were elevated. The main conclusions of this
study are: (1) a L-CHO diet is detrimental to anaerobic work capacity, possibly because of a reduced muscle glycogen store
and decreased rate of glycolysis; (2) reduced carbohydrate intake for 3 days enhances activity of the sympathoadrenal system
at rest and after exercise.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether motorcycle handling capabilities--measured by means of the efficiency of emergency manoeuvres--were dependent on prior sleep deprivation and time of day. Twelve male participants voluntarily took part in four test sessions, starting at 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m., following a night either with or without sleep. Each test session comprised temperature and sleepiness measurements, before three different types of motorcycling tests were initiated: (1) stability in straight ahead riding at low speed (in "slow motion" mode and in "brakes and clutch" mode), (2) emergency braking and (3) crash avoidance tasks performed at 20 kph and 40 kph. The results indicate that motorcycle control at low speed depends on time of day, with an improvement in performance throughout the day. Emergency braking performance is affected at both speeds by time of day, with poorer performance (longer total stopping distance, reaction time and braking distance) in the morning, and also by sleep deprivation, from measurements obtained at 40 kph (incorrect initial speed). Except for a tendency observed after the sleepless night to deviate from the initial speed, it seems that crash avoidance capabilities are quite unaffected by the two disturbance factors. Consequently, some motorcycle handling capabilities (stability at low speed and emergency braking) change in the same way as the diurnal fluctuation observed in body temperature and sleepiness, whereas for others (crash avoidance) the participants were able to maintain their initial performance level despite the high levels of sleepiness recorded after a sleepless night. Motorcycle riders have to be aware that their handling capabilities are limited in the early morning and/or after sleep deprivation. Both these situations can increase the risk of falls and of being involved in a road accident. 相似文献

The extent to which the diurnal fluctuations of different cognitive processes could be affected by sleep loss may be explored to predict performance decrements observed in the real world. Twenty healthy male subjects voluntarily took part in 8 test sessions at 06:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 18:00 h, following either a night with or without sleep in random order. Measurements included oral temperature, simple reaction time, sign cancelation, Go/NoGo, and the Purdue pegboard test. The results indicate that simple reaction time and motor coordination had morning–afternoon variations closely following the rhythms of temperature and vigilance. Inhibitory attention (Go/NoGo) presented no morning–afternoon variations. Sleep deprivation may affect the profiles of cognitive performance depending on the processes solicited. Sustained and inhibitory attention are particularly affected in the morning (after 24 and 28 waking hours), while a complex task (visuo-motor coordination) would be affected after 32 waking hours only. 相似文献

'You don't make genetic test decisions from one day to the next'--using time to preserve moral space
The part played by time in ethics is often taken for granted, yet time is essential to moral decision making. This paper looks at time in ethical decisions about having a genetic test. We use a patient-centred approach, combining empirical research methods with normative ethical analysis to investigate the patients' experience of time in (i) prenatal testing of a foetus for a genetic condition, (ii) predictive or diagnostic testing for breast and colon cancer, or (iii) testing for Huntington's disease (HD). We found that participants often manipulated their experience of time, either using a stepwise process of microdecisions to extend it or, under the time pressure of pregnancy, changing their temporal 'depth of field'. We discuss the implications of these strategies for normative concepts of moral agency, and for clinical ethics. 相似文献

The exercise training workload for cardiac patients is determined from the peak heart rate achieved safely during a stress test. Circadian rhythms may play a key role in changing physiological responses to the stress test. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the time of day on cardiopulmonary and metabolic responses in highly trained men with coronary artery disease. A group of 15 patients with coronary artery disease [53.5 (SD 6) years] performed two sessions of graded tests to exhaustion: one session was performed at 10 a.m. and the second at 5 p.m. in randomized order. Treadmill velocity was kept constant at a speed of 4.8 km · h–1 starting with an elevation of 0% which was increased thereafter by 2.5% every 3 min. At rest the results revealed that only oxygen uptake was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the morning compared to that observed in the evening [2.9 (SD 0.4) compared to 3.5 (SD 0.5) ml O2 · kg–1 · min–1, respectively]. During exercise, differences due to time of day were found in the variables of maximal oxygen uptake which were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the evening than in the morning [34.2 (SD 2.6) and 40.8 (SD 2.5) ml O2 · kg–1 · min–1, respectively]. These data indicated that in these well-trained coronary artery disease patients there was a significant time of day effect associated with metabolic responses following stress-testing. 相似文献

Standing during cycling may increase overall muscular activity. However, effects of standing vs. seated posture on performance measures during repeated bouts have not been extensively explored. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of standing vs. seated posture on repeated Wingate performance. Healthy volunteers (n = 35) performed 3 consecutive Wingate anaerobic power tests (W(1), W(2), W(3)) in a standing (STA) as well as seated (SIT) posture. Within-group comparisons were made for peak power, mean power, minimum power, and fatigue index. Results were considered significant at p < or = 0.05. No significant differences were found for peak power in W(1), W(2), or W(3). No significant difference was found for mean power in W(1) or W(2), but significant differences were found for mean power in W(3) (STA: 451.5 +/- 105.3, SIT: 425.7 +/- 110.0); minimum power in W(1) (STA: 433.6 +/- 100.8, SIT: 381.5 +/- 96.9), W(2) (STA: 348.1 +/- 112.9, SIT: 308.0 +/- 95.8), W(3) (STA: 292.0 +/- 103.6, SIT: 265.3 +/- 90.8); and fatigue index: W(1) (STA: 51.3 +/- 10.7, SIT: 56.9 +/- 9.3), W(2) (STA: 56.5 +/- 12.6, SIT: 61.8 +/- 12.2), W(3) (STA: 59.4 +/- 13.1, SIT: 63.6 +/- 12.4). Results suggest that a standing posture enhances performance during repeated Wingate cycling. The enhancement is most likely due to an attenuated loss in power, which in turn improves fatigue index. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare nutritionally enriched JavaFit coffee (JF) to commercially available decaffeinated coffee (P) with regard to impact on endurance and anaerobic power performance in a physically active, college-aged population. Ten subjects (8 men, 2 women) performed two 30-second Wingate anaerobic power tests and 2 cycle ergometer tests (75% VO2 max) to exhaustion. Mean VO2 was measured during each endurance exercise protocol. Excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were recorded for 30 minutes following all exercise sessions. Area under the curve analysis was used to compare EPOC between JF and P for all exercise sessions. No differences were seen between JF and P in any of the power performance measures. However, time to exhaustion was significantly (p = 0.05) higher in JF (35.3 +/- 15.2 minutes) compared with P (27.3 +/- 10.7 minutes). No difference between JF and P were seen in EPOC in either the aerobic or anaerobic exercise sessions. A significant (p < 0.05) difference in average 30-minute postanaerobic power exercise RER was seen between JF (0.87 +/- 0.04) and P (0.83 +/- 0.03), but not following endurance exercise. A nutritionally-enriched coffee beverage appears to enhance time to exhaustion during aerobic exercise, but does not provide an ergogenic benefit during anaerobic exercise. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the supposed influence of pedal rate on the diurnal fluctuation of the time to exhaustion from high-intensity exercise. Eleven male cyclists performed three tests at 06:00 h and three at 18:00 h at a free pedal rate (FPR) and two imposed pedal rates (80% and 120% of the FPR). They performed the tests until exhaustion using a power output corresponding to 95% maximal power (Pmax). Time to exhaustion, rectal temperature, oxygen consumption (.VO2), M. quadriceps, vastus medialis, M. biceps femoris electromyographic Root Mean Square activity rise (RMS slope), and blood lactate concentration were measured. The mean time to exhaustion recorded at 18:00 h (270.6+/-104.8 sec) was greater than at 06:00 h (233.9+/-84.9 sec). The time to exhaustion was significantly greater when the pedal rate was imposed at 80% versus 120% FPR. The blood lactate concentration and absolute core temperature at the point of exhaustion were significantly higher during tests done at 18:00 h. There was no diurnal variation in core temperature increase, .VO2, and RMS slope. The time-of-day effect for every variable did not depend on pedal rate. Diurnal variations in maximal aerobic endurance cannot be explained by a change in aerobic metabolism or in muscular fatigue. The origin of the diurnal variation in the time to exhaustion is likely to lie in greater participation in anaerobic metabolism. Also, the influence of temperature on neuromuscular functioning as an explanation for the diurnal variation in performance cannot be excluded in this study. The hypothesis on the basis of which pedal rate would influence diurnal variations in time to exhaustion in cycling was not validated by this research. 相似文献

Developmental changes in the nipple-search behaviour of rabbit pups (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were investigated from day 1 to day 13. The performance of four litters was tested 1 h before and 6 h after the once-daily nursing, and of two litters 6 h before and 1 h after nursing on lactating does restrained on their back. During the first 5 days, the median times taken by pups to attach to nipples decreased from 11.8 s to 3.2 s. This improvement was mainly due to a decrease in the latency to search and suggested an improvement in the ability to react to the nipple-search pheromone. Except for the first day, pups located nipples faster before than after nursing, and were best 1 h before. After the first week, latencies to search remained minimal at this time, but increased again at the other times, and were longest on day 13 at 1 h after nursing. Performance changes with time of day corresponded to daily changes in activity, and, after the first week, suggested a further development of underlying motivational mechanisms. 相似文献
