Genetic selection has resulted in larger cows with high milk production potential but a tendency for poor fertility. In multiparous cows fetal development competes for nutrients with concurrent milk production. This study tested the hypotheses that (a) maternal age and milk yield during pregnancy alter calf birth size and (b) birth weight influences subsequent productivity and fertility. Concurrently born Holstein-Friesian heifers (n=65) with multiparous dams and three sires were monitored from birth to the end of their first lactation to assess effects of birth weight on growth, milk production and fertility. Calves were analyzed as three subgroups: low (L), average (A) and high (H) birth weight (BW) calves (n=21-22 per group). LBW calves were born 10 kg lighter than HBW calves and remained significantly lighter throughout the study. They were generally smaller in other measured indices (length, height, girth, ponderal index) between birth and 9 months and were more likely to have older dams (lactations 3-6) with higher peak yields (>42 kg/day). Milk production parameters were indistinguishable between the 3 birthweight groups and metabolic parameters (IGF-I, insulin, glucose) measured around first calving were unaffected. HBW offspring were more likely to have persistent corpora lutea following their first calving and other fertility parameters also tended to be worse. Sire influenced gestation length but not birth size. Sire heritability estimates showed that weight, IGF-I and insulin concentrations after first calving and fertility in the first lactation were all heritable. The results support the hypothesis that high milk production in the dam may predispose to birth of a smaller calf. Smaller birth size did not, however, have any subsequent adverse effects on productivity or fertility in the first lactation and sire was more influential at this stage.  相似文献

A prospective field study in heifers from birth to first breeding was undertaken on two commercial dairies to assess the effect of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) congenital and post-natal infection (PNI) on fertility. A high BVDV Type 2 antibody titer (1:4096) at 10 months of age was associated with 32 more days to conceive, compared with a low titer (1:128). Conversely, infection with BVDV by 5-6 months of age and high BVDV Type 2 titers 1 month before conception or breeding was associated with improved fertility. Heifers with evidence of congenital BVDV infection had lower fertility than non-infected heifers (15-42 days longer time-to-first AI), which depended on BVDV Type 2 titers at 10 months of age. Neospora caninum infection was associated with additional services per conception (SPC) and Leptospira interrogans infection was associated with a delay in the time-to-first breeding. It appears that under field conditions, the effect of subclinical BVDV infection on subsequent heifer fertility may be due to a complex of interrelationships among multiple BVDV infections that depend on the type and timing of infection relative to reproductive development and events.  相似文献

The objective of Experiment I, replicated twice, was to evaluate whether fertility of estrus-synchronized dairy heifers could be improved by postinsemination progesterone supplementation. Estrous cycles were synchronized using two injections of prostaglandin (PG) F(2alpha) adiministered 11 days apart. Heifers displaying estrus were inseminated and assigned to control (n = 155) and treated (n = 159) groups. Treatment consisted of intravaginal insertion of controlled internal drug release (CIDR) devices for Days 7 to 13 (Day 0 = day of estrus). The conception rate for CIDR-treated heifers (57.9%) did not differ significantly from that of the controls (53.6%). The return-to-estrus rate and pattern of return estruses were not affected by treatment, but indicated that early embryonic mortality may have occurred in some of the heifers diagnosed nonpregnant. The objective of Experiment II was to evaluate if used CIDR devices were effective in resynchronizing returns to estrus in previously synchronized inseminated but nonpregnant and noninseminated heifers. Estrous cycles of dairy heifers of breeding age were synchronized with PGF(2alpha). Heifers displaying estrus were assigned to be inseminated (n = 117) or not inseminated (n = 35). All heifers were treated with 9-day used CIDR devices for Days 17 to 22 after synchronized estrus in order to resynchronize returns to estrus. Of the inseminated but nonpregnant heifers (n = 41), 78.1% were detected in estrus after CIDR removal (versus 94.3% of noninseminated heifers [n = 35]; P < 0.05) and 61.0% of the estruses occurred within 4 days of CIDR removal (versus 91.4% of noninseminated; P < 0.05). Estruses of synchronized inseminated nonpregnant heifers occurred over a longer period compared with those of noninseminated heifers (P < 0.025). The results indicate that response to the resynchronization protocol was altered by the outcome (early embryo death or failed fertilization) of the previous unsuccessful insemination, and support the hypothesis that delayed returns to estrus can be attributable to a pregnancy which was initiated but failed to establish itself. Such factors should be considered when evaluating responses of cattle to treatments designed to enhance fertility.  相似文献

Fifty-five dairy heifers were given two injections of Lutalyse 11 days apart. Twenty-one of the heifers were also given an injection of GnRH 48 hr after the second Lutalyse injection (Group G). Of the remaining 34 animals, 19 were randomly allotted to be inseminated 12 hr after observed estrus following Lutalyse (Group E), while 15 were inseminated 80 hr after the second Lutalyse injection (Group P). The intervals from second Lutalyse injection to occurrence of both estrus and peak gonadotropin concentrations were variable among animals receiving only Lutalyse. GnRH injections reduced variation (P<.01) in the interval from second Lutalyse injection to occurrence of peak gonadotropin concentrations, but did not improve fertility. Pregnancy rates did not differ (P>.05) among treatment groups. The failure of GnRH administration following Lutalyse to improve pregnancy rates indicates that GnRH administration followed by insemination 12 hr later is not effective in increasing pregnancy rates above those attained in animals inseminated at either 12 hr post estrus or 80 hr after second Lutalyse injection.  相似文献

The pelvic area was measured in 129 Holstein x Hereford heifers at 10, 16 and 22 months of age. The heifers were fed an all forage diet. Pelvic growth was not linear over time, changing from an increase of 0.27 +/- 0.2 cm(2)/day during the first 6 months of the study to 0.13 +/- 0.13 cm(2)/day during the last 6 months (P<0.01). The relationship of pelvic area to body weight, height at hooks, and distance from hooks to pins did not change with age, and a moderate correlation between the pelvic area and these other measures (R=0.20 to 0.80) was noted. The pelvic area was measured within 24 hours after calving in 76 of the heifers. The rate of increase of pelvic area/day increased significantly (P < 0.01) in the month prior to calving from 0.14+/-0.13 cm(2) to 1.15 +/- 0.88 cm(2). As a result, the pelvic area at calving had a moderate correlation (R=0.29 to 0.52) to the pelvic area prior to calving. Logistic regression and discriminant analysis techniques were used to model the influence of the pelvic area and calf birth weight on the incidence of dystocia. Ratio of the pelvic area at calving to calf birth weight significantly (P < 0.01) influenced the incidence of dystocia. Logistic regression techniques were not superior to discriminant analysis; both correctly predicted 73% of the cases. Pelvic area measurement at any time other than calving was not associated with dystocia (P >0.05). Pelvic area and calf birth weight are important determinants of dystocia in heifers. The high degree of variation noted in pelvic growth, in particular during the month prior to calving, resulted in low correlation between pelvic area at calving and the precalving measurement. Therefore, we were not able to predict dystocia by measuring the pelvic area prior to calving.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate embryonic size and survival, plasma progesterone (P4) and pregnancy-specific protein bovine (PSPB) concentrations in early pregnancies (n = 99) following the transfer of one whole (n = 66) or one demi (n = 33) embryo to recipient virgin dairy heifers. The experiment was designed to evaluate the fixed effects of embryo size at transfer (whole or demi embryo) on Day 7 of the estrous cycle (Day 0 = estrus) and P4 supplementation between Days 7 to 19 through an intravaginal device (yes or no) on plasma P4 and PSPB concentrations and on embryo measurements. Plasma P4 concentrations were measured by RIA on Days 0, 7, 14, 19, 21, 25, 35, 42, 49, 56 and 63 of pregnancy and, PSPB concentrations were measured by ELISA on Days 7, 21, 25, 35, 42, 49, 56 and 63. The presence of an embryonic vesicle was detected on Day 25, embryonic/fetal movements and heartbeat were evaluated on Days 42 and 63 and embryo measurements [crown-rump length (CRL) and width at mid body] were obtained on Day 42 through ultrasonography.In non-supplemented pregnancies, Day 42 whole embryos had higher (P < 0.05) CRL and width than demi embryos, but the difference averaged only 1 to 2 mm. In P4 supplemented pregnancies, whole and demi embryos attained a similar size on Day 42 of pregnancy. Embryo size at transfer, early exogenous P4 supplementation and their interactions had no effects (P > 0.05) on plasma P4 concentrations. However, the post-hoc LSD evaluation showed that plasma P4 concentrations on Day 25 were higher (P < 0.001) in whole than in demi embryo derived pregnancies and, that exogenous P4 supplementation increased (P < 0.05) plasma P4 concentrations on Day 19 of pregnancy. The plasma PSPB detection rate on Days 7 to 63 of pregnancy was similar in pregnancies resulting from the transfer of whole and demi embryos. From a total of 93 recipients remaining pregnant until Day 63, plasma PSPB was constantly undetectable on Day 7, was detected in 4% of Day 21 samples, 41% of Day 25, 95% of Day 35, 96% of Day 42, 99% of Day 49 and in 100% of samples of Days 56 and 63. Concentrations of PSPB increased (P < 0.05) from Days 21 to 42 and from Days 56 to 63, with a plateau between Days 42 to 56. Demi embryo pregnancies had higher (P < 0.05) plasma PSPB concentrations on Days 35 and 42 than whole embryo pregnancies. Progesterone supplementation had a positive effect (P < 0.01) on PSPB concentrations from Days 35 to 63. Concentrations of PSPB were similar in non-supplemented whole and demi embryo pregnancies from Days 7 to Day 63. In contrast, in supplemented recipients, demi embryo pregnancies had higher (P < 0.05) PSPB concentrations on Days 25 to 42 than whole embryo pregnancies. No significant correlation was found between P4 and PSPB concentrations or between the concentrations of these hormones and embryonic measurements on Day 42. In conclusion, demi embryos experienced a compensatory growth until Day 42 of pregnancy, attaining a similar size to that of whole embryos and originating conceptuses producing similar plasma PSPB concentrations to those of whole embryo derived conceptuses. Embryonic growth and conceptus secretion of PSPB were positively stimulated by early pregnancy exogenous P4 treatment.  相似文献

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with accelerated growth after birth. Together, IUGR and accelerated growth after birth predict reduced lean tissue mass and increased obesity in later life. Although placental insufficiency is a major cause of IUGR, whether it alters growth and adiposity in early postnatal life is not known. We hypothesized that placental restriction (PR) in the sheep would reduce size at birth and increase postnatal growth rate, fat mass, and feeding activity in the young lamb. PR reduced survival rate and size at birth, with soft tissues reduced to a greater extent than skeletal tissues and relative sparing of head width (P < 0.05 for all). PR did not alter absolute growth rates (i.e., the slope of the line of best fit for age vs. parameter size from birth to 45 days of age) but increased neonatal fractional growth rates (absolute growth rate relative to size at birth) for body weight (+24%), tibia (+15%) and metatarsal (+18%) lengths, hindlimb (+23%) and abdominal (+19%) circumferences, and fractional growth rates for current weight (P < 0.05) weekly throughout the first 45 days of life. PR and small size at birth reduced individual skeletal muscle weights and increased visceral adiposity in absolute and relative terms. PR also altered feeding activity, which increased with decreasing size at birth and was predictive of increased postnatal growth and adiposity. In conclusion, PR reduced size at birth and induced catch-up growth postnatally, normalizing weight and length but increasing adiposity in early postnatal life. Increased feeding activity may contribute to these alterations in growth and body composition following prenatal restraint and, if they persist, may lead to adverse metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes in later life.  相似文献

Infertility in dairy cattle is a complex, multi-factorial problem that cannot be evaluated in isolation of other diseases and disorders. Clearly there is a role for the prevention of problems in the peri-parturient period, in particular hypocalcaemia, mastitis, lameness and retained placenta (RP), that all have a negative impact on the subsequent fertility of the cow. Minerals, trace elements and vitamins play a vital role in the prevention of these disorders at this time. Macro minerals are involved in the acid base status of the dairy cow and influence calcium metabolism. The use of anionic salts in combination with adequate calcium and magnesium supplementation may help to improve dry matter intakes and reduce negative energy balance in the post-calving period as well as prevent hypocalcaemia. Vitamin E and zinc are effective in prevention of mastitis that occurs predominantly in the first weeks of lactation, through enhanced antioxidant function and keratinisation of the teat canal. Lameness in dairy cattle also occurs mainly in lactation though most of the original insults to the hoof can occur prior to calving. Zinc and biotin are implicated in improving keratinisation of the hoof and prevention of this disease. Organic forms of zinc are retained better than inorganic sources and may provide greater benefit in disease prevention. Retained placenta can be reduced by prevention of hypocalcaemia and also adequate selenium status of the dairy cow. Selenium yeast is known to have higher retention in tissues and may play an important role in ensuring sufficient selenium is available to the cow for reduction of disease.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of growth parameters and metabolic indices during the rearing period on the fertility of nulliparous Holstein-Friesian heifers managed on 17 UK dairy farms. Growth parameters (body weight [BW], heart girth, height, and crown-rump length) and metabolic indices (insulin-like growth factor-I [IGF-I], insulin, glucose, and urea) were measured at approximately 30, 180, and 450 d of age. Fertility data collected included age at first breeding (AFB), number of services per conception, pregnancy rate to first artificial insemination (AI), and age at first calving (AFC). Of the heifers initially bred (n = 428), 4% failed to conceive. The mean pregnancy rate to first AI for heifers that conceived and calved without suffering reproductive loss (n = 392) was 67%, and 6% required >2 inseminations. The mean AFB and AFC was 473 ± 5 d (range, 357 to 936 d) and 791 ± 6 d (range, 636 to 1529 d), respectively. Increased BW, girth, and IGF-I concentration (at 30, 180, and 450 d) and increased skeletal growth (at 180 and 450 d) was associated with a reduced AFB and AFC (P < 0.05 to 0.001). Heifers calving at <775 d had a mean BW gain of 0.82 ± 0.01 kg from 30 to 180 d. Increased glucose concentration at 180 d was associated with a reduced AFB (P < 0.01), but no associations were found between insulin and urea concentrations and any of the fertility traits recorded (P > 0.1). Suboptimal growth associated with an increased AFC could be alleviated by improved monitoring of replacement heifers during the rearing period.  相似文献

The peripartum period is of critical importance to subsequent health and fertility. Most cows enter a state of negative energy balance (NEB) associated with many metabolic changes which have carry over effects on the resumption and normality of estrous cyclicity and the success of subsequent inseminations. A dataset on 500 lactations explored the relationships between metabolic traits measured before and after calving with fertility. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that longer calving to conception intervals were associated with altered profiles of IGF-I, urea and body condition score. These relationships between metabolic profiles and fertility differed between first lactation cows (which are still growing but produce less milk) and mature animals. Early postpartum the liver undergoes extensive biochemical and morphological modifications to adapt to NEB, the uterus is extensively remodeled and must clear bacterial infections, and the ovary must resume ovulatory cycles. RNA isolated from liver and uterine tissues harvested 2 weeks postpartum from cows in mild (MNEB) and severe (SNEB) energy balance was used to screen the Affymetrix 23K bovine microarray. In liver, SNEB resulted in differential expression of key genes involved in lipid catabolism, gluconeogenesis, and the synthesis and stability of IGF-I. This was accompanied by reduced systemic concentrations of IGF-I which is likely to impact on ovarian function and early embryo development. Within endometrium, cows in SNEB showed histological evidence for higher levels of inflammation and the microarray analysis identified groups of differentially expressed genes involved in tissue remodeling and immune response. This may delay uterine repair after calving, likely contributing to the observed reduction in fertility.  相似文献

Poor detection of estrus, still a major problem in the dairy industry, has prompted the development of electronic estrous detection technologies. One of the features of estrous behavior is a marked increase in walking activity. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effects of various management factors on walking activity increase at estrus, and the relationship between this trait and fertility. Data from 5883 artificial inseminations (AI) conducted in two high-producing dairy herds were analyzed. Detection of estrus was performed using a pedometer system. Of the total AI investigated, 2072 (35.2%) resulted in pregnancy. The following data were recorded for each animal at AI: herd, lactation number, milk production (average for the 3 days prior to AI), lactation stage (early, mid, and late lactation), previous estrous synchronization (cloprostenol or progesterone releasing intravaginal device [PRID] for animals showing estrus within 7 days of treatment), season (warm versus cool period), insemination number following parturition, inseminating bull, inseminator, and pedometer measurements. Variables were screened for associations with walking activity by analysis of variance (ANOVA) through generalized linear model procedures (PROC GLM). Increased parity and milk production, and insemination during the warm period were associated with lower pedometer measurements. No significant effects of the herd, estrous synchronization, and lactation stage were observed. The link between walking activity and fertility was determined by applying logistic regression models. We detected no significant effects of herd, milk production, estrous synchronization, lactation stage, and inseminator on pregnancy rate. A higher lactation and insemination number, and insemination during the warm period were negatively correlated with the pregnancy rate. The likelihood of pregnancy was greater when semen from one of the bulls was used and when physical activity at estrus was increased. Our findings indicate that cow and management factors contribute intensely to walking activity at estrus, and also reveal a close link between increased walking activity and fertility.  相似文献

We have previously reported (Bauer MK, Breier BH, Bloomfield FH, Jensen EC, Gluckman PD, and Harding JE. J Endocrinol 177: 83-92, 2003) that a chronic pulsatile infusion of growth hormone (GH) to intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) ovine fetuses increased fetal circulating IGF-I levels without increasing fetal growth. We hypothesized a cortisol-induced upregulation of fetal hepatic GH receptor (GH-R) mRNA levels, secondary increases in IGF-I mRNA levels, and circulating IGF-I levels, but a downregulation of the type I IGF receptor (IGF-IR) as an explanation. We, therefore, measured mRNA levels of genes of the somatotrophic axis by real-time RT-PCR in fetal and placental tissues of fetuses with IUGR (induced by uteroplacental embolization from 110- to 116-days gestation) that received either a pulsatile infusion of GH (total dose 3.5 mg/day) or vehicle from 117-126 days and in control fetuses (n = 5 per group). Tissues were collected at 127 days (term, 145 days). Fetal cortisol concentrations were significantly increased in IUGR fetuses. However, in liver, GH-R, but not IGF-I or IGF-IR, mRNA levels were decreased in both IUGR groups. In contrast, in placenta, GH-R, IGF-I, and IGF-IR expression were increased in IUGR vehicle-infused fetuses. GH infusion further increased placental GH-R and IGF-IR, but abolished the increase in IGF-I mRNA levels. GH infusion reduced IGF-I expression in muscle and increased GH-R but decreased IGF-IR expression in kidney. IUGR increased hepatic IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-1 and placental IGFBP-2 and -3 mRNA levels with no further effect of GH infusion. In conclusion, the modest increases in circulating cortisol concentrations in IUGR fetuses did not increase hepatic GH-R mRNA expression and, therefore, do not explain the increased circulating IGF-I levels that we found with GH infusion, which are likely due to reduced clearance rather than increased production. We demonstrate tissue-specific regulation of the somatotrophic axis in IUGR fetuses and a discontinuity between GH-R and IGF-I gene expression in GH-infused fetuses that is not explained by alterations in phosphorylated STAT5b.  相似文献

A field experiment conducted at Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, during three successive seasons showed that with the 120-day-duration variety Ratna two dual crops ofAzolla pinnata R. Brown (Bangkok isolate) could be achieved 25 and 50 days after transplanting (DAT) by inoculating 2.0 t ha−1 of fresh Azolla 10 and 30 DAT respectively. One basal crop of Azolla could also be grown using the same inoculum 20 days before transplanting (DBT) in fallow rice fields. The three crops of Azolla grown—once before transplanting and twice after transplanting—gave an average total biomass of 38–63 and 43–64 t ha−1 fresh Azolla containing 64–90 and 76–94 kg N ha−1 respectively in the square and rectangular spacings. Two crops of Azolla grown only as a dual crop, on the other hand, gave 26–39 and 29–41 t ha−1 fresh Azolla which contained 44–61 and 43–59 kg N ha−1 respectively. Growth and yield of rice were significantly higher in Azolla basal plus Azolla dual twice incorporated treatments than in the Azolla dual twice incorporation, Azolla basal plus 30 kg N ha−1 urea and 60 kg N ha−1 urea treatments. Azolla basal plus 30 kg N ha−1 urea and 60 kg N ha−1 urea showed similar yields but Azolla dual twice incorporation was significantly lower than those. The different spacing with same plant populations did not affect growth and yield significantly, whereas Azolla growth during dual cropping was 8.3 and 64% more in the rectangular spacing than in the square spacing in Azolla basal plus Azolla dual twice incorporation and Azolla dual twice incorporation treatments.  相似文献

Records were obtained over a 3 year period from six Holstein dairy farms of 300 to 500 cows each in the Phoenix, Ariz. area. Dairies were selected on the basis of similar management practices, herd size, milk production and facilities (with the exception of cooling systems). Microclimatic modifications (two dairies each) were shade only (approximately 3.7 m2/cow), evaporative-cooled shades and low-pressure water foggers under the shades. Data were categorized by season of calving (spring, Feb.–May; summer, June–Sept.; and fall, Oct.–Jan.). Traits evaluated were calving interval, days open and services/conception. Calving interval was shortest for cows calving in the spring (378 days), intermediate in fall (382 days) and longest in summer (396 days). Similar seasonal trends were observed for days open (103, 103 and 119 days, respectively) and services/conception (1.54, 1.81 and 1.93, respectively). All differences between spring and summer were significant (P < 0.05). Calving interval and days open were less for evaporative-cooled groups (374 and 98 days, respectively), with no difference between shade only and foggers (391 and 392 days, 112 and 116 days, respectively). Services/conception were similar for all groups (1.72 to 1.79). A significant interaction between microclimate and season for services/conception could be interpreted as (i) smaller season differences for evaporative-cooled groups than for shade or foggers, or (ii) a change in the ranking of control and fogger groups during summer versus fall. Evaporative cooling was more effective than fogging for reducing the detrimental effects of seasonal high temperatures on fertility.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare embryo quality of lactating Holstein Friesian cows (LHFC), non-lactating Holstein Friesian heifers (NLHFH) and Belgian Blue beef cows (BB) and to identify factors that are associated with embryo quality in LHFC and NLHFH. After superovulation and embryo recovery at Day 7, embryos (n=727 from 47 LHFC, 27 NLHFH and 50 BB) were scored morphologically for quality, colour and developmental stage. Blood samples and data concerning parity, age, milk production and management were collected. Data were compared univariably between the three groups. A multivariable regression model was built with quality and colour of the LHFC and NLHFH embryos as dependent variables. Only 13.1% of LHFC embryos were categorized as excellent compared to 62.5% and 55.0% of the embryos in NLHFH and BB, respectively. Almost none of the NLHFH or BB embryos displayed a dark appearance of the cytoplasm compared to 24.1% of the LHFC embryos. Only 4% of all LHFC embryos reached blastocyst stage compared to 23.2% and 17.3% in NLHFH and BB. Based on the multivariable regression analysis, "physiological status" (lactating or not) together with the serum total protein concentration of LHFC and NLHFH, was significantly associated with embryo quality and colour. Thus, LHFC display an inferior embryo quality compared to NLHFH and BB. Producing milk or not seems to be significantly associated with embryo quality. Therefore, reduced embryo quality on Day 7 following AI, could be an important factor in the subfertility problem in modern high-yielding dairy cows.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterize changes in serum concentrations of triiodothyronine (T(3)) and thyroxine (T(4)) in relation to growth and the onset of puberty in Carora heifers, a Venezuelan dairy breed. Heifers aged 7 to 16 months were grouped retrospectively according to puberty status into 4 groups: Pubertal (control group; n = 12) and nonpubertal (n = 8) contemporary (born during the same week) heifers, pubertal (n = 7.) and nonpubertal (n = 7) noncontemporary (born in different months) heifers. A split-plot model with repeated measures over Months 7 to 16 of age was used. Control heifers attained puberty at 290 +/- 5 kg body weight (BW) between 13 and 14 months of age. Significant (P < 0.01) interactions of birth time of year and puberty status were detected in BW and serum concentrations of T(3), but only interaction of birth time of year was found in T(4). A transient but significant (P < 0.05) decrease in T(3) secretion was seen in pubertal contemporary and noncontemporary (101 +/- 4 and 113 +/- 4 ng/d1, respectively) heifers at Month 12 of age, a change which could be critical to the onset of puberty. Significant (P < 0.05) positive correlation was found between BW and T(3). In summary, thyroid hormone secretion changed across the months of growing and around the onset of puberty in Carora heifers.  相似文献

There is evidence that repeat breeding in dairy cattle can be caused by both extrinsic, environmental factors and intrinsic, animal factors. In repeat-breeder heifers (RBH), disturbed endocrine patterns and estrous events result in a subsequent decreased fertility associated with delayed ovulation. Whether infertility is also due to the presence of an unsuitable follicular environment impairing normal fertilization, remains to be determined. At the onset of standing estrus, ovaries were obtained from 7 strictly defined RBH and 5 virgin heifers (VH) of the Swedish Red and White breed. Detection of apoptosis in the preovulatory and three subordinate follicle walls was done by using the TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling) technique at light microscopy level. The follicles were histologically assessed for degree of atresia. The ultrastructure of the follicle wall and recovered oocytes was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The overall degree of apoptosis in membrana granulosa and theca interna of preovulatory and subordinate follicles did not differ between RBH and VH, but the numbers of TUNEL-positive cells differed significantly between preovulatory and subordinate follicles in both RBH and VH. There was a strong relationship between density of apoptotic cells and degree of atresia. No differences in follicle wall apoptosis nor morphology were detectable, suggesting that repeat breeder heifers enter standing estrus with the same morphological prerequisites as normal animals, considering follicular structure.  相似文献

Relationships between month and clinatic factors-rainfall, ambient temperature, relative humidity (RH) and temperature-humidity index (THI)-with time of parturition, litter size, birth weight and preweaning mortality were studied in Djallonke and Dja lonke x Sahelian sheep. Births (4142) occurred all year round although there were significant differences in the number of births per month. Maximum litter size did not coincide with the maximum births. Peak conceptions occurred in the early parts of the major rainy season. There were also significant differences in birth weights and mortalities (%) per month. Maximum and minimum values (of birth weighs and mortalities) occurred in the latter part of the rainy seasons and dry periods respectively. There were significant positive correlations between litter size and cumulative rainfall in the 4th–6th months periods prior to lambing. Birth weights of both males and females were positively and significantly associated with minimum temperature and cumulative rain-fall in the 2- and 3-months period prior to lambing respectively. There were significant positive correlations between mortality and minimum and maximum RH and cumulative rainfall in the 3 months after lambing.  相似文献
