Apomixis in hawkweed: Mendel's experimental nemesis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Mendel used hawkweeds and other plants to verify the laws of inheritance he discovered using Pisum. Trait segregation was not evident in hawkweeds because many form seeds asexually by apomixis. Meiosis does not occur during female gametophyte formation and the mitotically formed embryo sacs do not require fertilization for seed development. The resulting progeny retain a maternal genotype. Hawkweeds in Hieracium subgenus Pilosella form mitotic embryo sacs by apospory. The initiation of sexual reproduction is required to stimulate apospory in ovules and to promote the function of the dominant locus, LOSS OF APOMEIOSIS, which stimulates the differentiation of somatic aposporous initial (AI) cells near sexually programmed cells. As AI cells undergo nuclear mitosis the sexual pathway terminates. The function of the dominant locus LOSS OF PARTHENOGENESIS in aposporous embryo sacs enables fertilization-independent embryo and endosperm development. Deletion of either locus results in partial reversion to sexual reproduction, and loss of function in both loci results in reversion to sexual development. In these apomicts, sexual reproduction is therefore the default reproductive mode upon which apomixis is superimposed. These loci are unlikely to encode factors critical for sexual reproduction but might recruit the sexual pathway to enable apomixis. Incomplete functional penetrance of these dominant loci is likely to lead to the generation of rare sexual progeny also derived from these facultative apomicts.  相似文献

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Quick diagnosis, and sorting of victims for severity is very important for positive prognosis. Tympanic membrane thermometry was introduced as a good index for core body temperature. Therefore, we have used a sheep model for heat stroke, to study the reliability of measuring body temperature at the tympanic membrane, as a diagnostic index in heat stroke management. This was compared to measuring body temperature at the skin and the rectum. We have observed no major superiority of tympanic over rectal thermometry in regard to its ability to sort out heat stroke cases according to severity. On the other hand, skin thermometry was found not to be a reliable index in this regard.  相似文献

Lesions consistent with exertional myopathy (EM) were documented postmortem in four North American river otters (Lutra canadensis) during translocation for a population restoration project. Clinical signs in these otters included depression, anorexia and shock. Gross lesions in one otter included locally extensive linear, pale areas within the subscapularis, rectus abdominis, quadriceps, and dorsal laryngeal muscles. Microscopic lesions were characterized by acute to subacute myofiber necrosis of varying severity, and occurred in a variety of skeletal muscles as well as cardiac muscle in one otter. Based on these observations, we conducted a retrospective review of records of otters which experienced similar capture, transfer, and holding protocols between 1995 and 1997, but with a successful outcome (n = 69). Significant elevations in serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and creatine kinase (CK) were observed in 19 (28%) of the otters, but may have been higher due to delayed sample collection from some otters. However, none of the otters with elevated enzymes exhibited clinical signs suggestive of EM. These findings indicate that river otters may develop EM when translocated, but many cases may be mild or clinically inapparent.  相似文献

Because of the aggressive threaten of heat stroke and a lack of understanding of the mechanism of action, mammal animal models for experimental heat stroke were well developed. During the past 5 decades, anesthetized mouse, rat, rabbit, dog, baboon and monkey were used as animal model for experimental heat stroke. However, anesthetized mammals models have some limitations, such as neuroprotective effect of anesthetic agents, possible disturbance on injury and recovery of stroke animals by anesthetic agents, difficulty of discussing animal behavior before and after heat stroke, it was also difficult for the models to evaluate cognitive function of animal under hot environment. Considering humanitarian, only awaked and unrestrained mouse heat stroke model was accepted so far. Therefore, we also developed an awaked and unrestrained rat heat stroke model, and found it was helpful to evaluate drug effectiveness for animal behavior and cognitive function under hot environment.  相似文献

The methods of centrifugal elutriation, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and dual isotopic labeling were applied to the study and identification of a number of purified yeast proteins. The location of polypeptide spots corresponding to specific proteins was determined on two-dimensional gels. A dual-label method was used to determine the rates of synthesis through the cell cycle of the identified proteins as well as to confirm the results of previous studies from our laboratory on unidentified proteins. The identified proteins, and the more generally defined phosphorylated, heat shock, and heat stroke proteins were found to follow the general pattern of exponential increase in rate of synthesis through the cell cycle. In addition, colorimetric enzyme activity assays were used to examine the catabolic enzyme alpha-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20). Both the activity and synthesis of alpha-glucosidase were found to be nonperiodic with respect to the cell cycle. These data contrast with earlier reports of periodicity, which employed induction and selection synchrony to study enzyme expression through the yeast cell cycle.  相似文献

In this study, we examined by post hoc meta- analysis the likely physiological consequences of environmental stress in a 56-year old, mentally impaired woman who suffered heat stroke after being trapped in an abandoned car on a hot, sunny day in August in a Las Vegas, NV, parking lot. At 1400 h, she entered the car and at 1830 h, after severe exposure to heat stress inside the car, she was found unresponsive to resuscitation.  相似文献
