The in situ growth rates of dominant ciliate species were studiedduring and shortly after phytoplankton peaks in two water bodies:the eutrophic Rímov Reservoir (South Bohemia, Czech Republic)and the oligo-mesotrophic Piburger See (Tyrol, Austria). Growthrate estimates based on changes in ciliate abundances in incubatedpre-screened samples (EN) were compared with those derived fromthe ciliate cell volume and ambient temperatures (ET). The valuesof EN were always rather lower than those of ET. During thestudies, the food supply limited the ciliate growth dependingon the ciliate feeding mode. An ecological grouping into filterfeeding versus raptorial feeding (‘hunting’) species,on the one hand, and attached/crawling (browsing) versus freeswimming species, on the other hand, clearly affected experimentalestimation. Both fine filter feeders (namely attached) and browsersexhibited a calculated EN closer to the theoretical (maximum)ET than did hunters and coarse filter feeders. It was apparent,for example, comparing EN and ET (day–1) of the followingspecies: filter feeders Halteria grandinella (EN = 0.42; ET>1.4), Strobilidium hexakinetum (0.34;>1.9), Pelagohalteriaviridis (0.27;>0.9), Vorticella aquadulcis complex (0.75;>1.0);raptorial Balanion planctonicum (0.65;>1.5), Urotricha furcata(in Rímov Reservoir 0.65;>2.1; in Piburger See 0.20;>1.5),Rhabdoaskenasia minima (0.22;>1.0), Askenasia acrostomia(0.12;>0.6); opportunistic Cyrtolophosis mucicola (0.42;>1.6)and Cinetochilum margaritaceum (0.86;>1.4). Predation byrotifers apparently affected measurements in several samplescontaining {small tilde}400 rotifers l–1 however, it seemedto be of little importance in the water column.  相似文献

A multispecifies trophic model called ECOPATH II, which can be used to describe the trophic relationships in aquatic ecosystems on a quantitative basis, is briefly presented. When properly used, it can help to explain the trophic relationships in ecosystems and possible evolution of fishstocks after modifications of the environment (e.g. eutrophication, introduction of a new population and/or a significant increase of the fishing effort), and to compare the trophic structure of several ecosystems. Examples are provided on two shallow lakes: Lake Ihema and Lake Naivasha. They are compared with Lake George which was previously documented.  相似文献

The composition and temporal abundance patterns of zooplankton community in Lake Prespa pelagic zone were studied throughout an annual cycle (October 2008–September 2009). Eighteen species (10 Rotifera, 5 Cladocera, 2 Copepoda, 1 Mollusca) were evidenced. It includes Arctodiaptomus steindachneri, an endemic calanoid of the Western Balkans. The zooplankton density varied during the investigated period and certain seasonal successions in temporal transpositions of their maximal development were noticed. The total zooplankton density was much higher in spring and summer period. The representatives of subclass Copepoda were dominant during the whole year. The dominant species was A. steindachneri. At the second place (with exception of the winter period) were the Cladocera representatives. The dominant species was Daphnia cucullata. At the third and fourth place were rotifers and larval form of Dreissena polymorpha, respectively. The quantitative presence of the Copepoda representatives was significantly lower in terms of the previous investigations. The Cladocera quantity reached high values during this period, particularly in summer. Such altering in the quantitative ratio between Copepoda and Cladocera in favor of the Cladocera, especially high quantitative presence of D. cucullata, typical for eutrophic lakes, imply of significant changes in zooplankton community and changes of the water quality in Lake Prespa pelagial.  相似文献

Coexistence of rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) clones in Soda Lake,Nevada   总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3  
Patterns of genetic variation among Brachionus plicatilis clones collected at different times from Soda Lake, Nevada (U.S.A.) were determined using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of isozymes. Six of the eleven enzymes assayed were variable. Three of these — malic dehydrogenase (MDH), cholinesterase (CHO), and phosphoglucomutase (PMG) - were selected to screen the 138 clones established from the field collections. Each enzyme revealed variation both within and between field samples. Thirty-eight of the 100 potential composite electromorphs formed by combining isozyme variants were found in the 138 clones. A substantial amount of genetic variation is therefore present. Patterns of electromorph frequency change resembled those reported for cladocerans. No evidence was found for a seasonal succession of distinct electromorphs. We suggest that the B. plicatilis in Soda Lake constitute a single population.  相似文献

Nine species of the genus Neodendrocoelum from Lake Ohrid, five from sublittoral and four from littoral regions, have a diploid chromosome complement 2n=32 and show a marked resemblance in their karyotypes, comprising four large pairs (group L), seven medium pairs (group M) and five small pairs (group S). Polymorphism has only been found in groups S. Variations in chiasma frequency in the species of this genus indicate that their meiotic systems are different. In these species the number of quadrivalent were found to be different in metaphase I. The process of speciation of this genus was manifested in the diploidization of autotetraploid species.  相似文献

The application of functional approaches in understanding phytoplankton community-level responses to changes in the environment has become increasingly widespread in recent years. Eutrophication is known to cause profound modifications in ecosystem processes; however, the underlying relationships between environmental drivers and phytoplankton diversity and functioning are complex and largely unknown. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated and compared the temporal diversity patterns of phytoplankton functional groups in the mesotrophic eastern and eutrophic western basin of the shallow Lake Balaton situated in Hungary. Diversity data were derived from taxonomic composition and biomass data corresponding to the years 2005–2006 and 2008–2009. With the use of cluster analysis, phytoplankton species were classified into eight distinct groups representing different combinations of functionally relevant traits including greatest axial linear dimension; surface-to-volume ratio; photosynthetic pigment composition; N2 fixation; phagotrophic potential; growth form/complexity (unicell, filamentous, colony-, or coenobium-forming); and motility. Our results have revealed that there is a significant inverse relationship between the functional group diversity used in our study and trophic state (total phytoplankton biomass) as opposed to species diversity, where no correlation was observed. In addition, group evenness showed an even stronger negative correlation with trophic state, while species evenness yielded only a weak relationship. The observed variability in functional group diversity suggests that such an approach could provide an efficient means of revealing structural changes in phytoplankton communities, establishing new hypotheses and highlighting fundamental points in ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Species composition, density, diversity, and dominance structure in gastrotrich assemblages were studied in three lakes (dystrophic, -mesotrophic, and polytrophic) and in three small ponds of different trophic status, situated in eastern Poland. The -mesotrophic lake (the only lake with a complete lacustrine zonation) was inhabited by the species-richest assemblage (31 species), the number of species being by 26–45% higher than that found in the remaining water bodies studied. Chaetonotus oculifer, C. similis, and Lepidodermella squamata were found to occur in the lakes only, while C. ophiogaster, C. rafalskii and C. rectaculeatus were recorded only in the ponds. C. disjunctus and C. macrochaetus were common eurytopic species. Two Sphagnum bogdwellers: C. acanthodes and Ichthydium forficula, were found to occur in the lakes and ponds sampled and in the -mesotrophic lake littoral, respectively. Dasydytid species were present in one of the ponds only, no dasydytids being found in the three lakes studied.  相似文献

Contrary to earlier observations the food composition of bream (Abramis brama L.) in Lake Balaton has changed in parallel with eutrophication. These changes were probably caused by increased population density and connected with density dependent growth as well as sharpened inter- and intraspecific competition in the cyprinid community. According to the frequency of occurrence, zooplankton followed by benthic invertebrates comprised the majority of the bream's food. By weight, however, benthic food dominated in both basins. Size-related dietary changes were pronounced, but statistically not always significant, suggesting the overall importance of the most abundant and available prey types. Bream did not strongly select any of the zooplankton groups, however, seasonal changes in food composition alternated in parallel with the trophic gradient along the longitudinal axis of the lake.  相似文献

Extracellular hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl β-N-acetylglucosaminide was measured in the oligomesotrophic Piburger See and the eutrophic Římov reservoir during spring and summer phytoplankton blooms, respectively. Total enzymatic activity (TEA) ranged between 0.2 and 19.1 nmol 1−1 h−1 in the reservoir and between 0.8 and 12.4 nmol 1−1 h−1 in the lake. High-affinity (Km < 1 μmol 1−1) and lowaffinity (Km > 100 μmol 1−1) enzymes were kinetically identifiable in most samples from both localities. The low-affinity enzyme activity (LEA) usually accounted for >60% (mean: 80%) of TEA. LEA and diatom biomass significantly correlated over time in the reservoir epilimnion (rs = 0.578) and in the lake metalimnion (rs = 0.862). As diatoms possess chitin and take up its monomer, N-acetylglucosamine, two explanations of the observed relationships are suggested: extracellular β-N-acetylglucosaminidase activity partly originates either from ectoenzymes of chitinolytic bacteria attached to diatom cells or from ectoenzymes of diatoms, enabling them to take up N-acetylglucosamine from ambient amino sugars instead of synthesizing it de novo. A significant positive correlation of LEA with crustacean abundance was found in the lake epilimnion (rs = 0.850), apparently reflecting the growing spring populations of frequently moulting juvenile crustaceans. A possible contribution of chitinolytic bacteria, accompanying the crustacean populations, to LEA is discussed.  相似文献

Oligochaeta, occurring in the littoral zones of two sand pits, were sampled in order to determine the relationship between the oligochaete species and the waters’ trophic level. Differences between sand pits attributable to community structure and to an overall higher abundance of oligochaetes, especially tubificids, were observed in Dzierżno Małe. Multivariate analyses (correspondence analysis [CA] and canonical correspondence analysis [CCA]) reveal correlations between the distribution patterns of oligochaete species and the concentration of nitrates, phosphates and dissolved oxygen. Some species, e.g. Dero digitata, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Potamothrix hammoniensis, Nais simplex, Limnodrilus claparedeanus, Limnodrilus udekemianus and Tubifex tubifex, were more abundant in eutrophic sites. The results of the study showed that the richness of Oligochaeta species is not a good method for estimating the trophic levels of the studied sand pits. Indicators based on the share of oligo-, meso- and eutrophic species in Oligochaeta communities are better for evaluating the water quality in the studied reservoirs.  相似文献

The rotifer species present in samples from 180 small water bodies, or ponds, in England were identified and listed for each pond. These communities were used to provide a system of classification of ponds applicable on a national basis, using the program TWINSPAN. Sites were also ordinated using DECORANA to identify major trends within the data set. The environmental factors most highly correlated with rotifer community were: (a) conductivity (P<0.001), (b) pH (P<0.001) and (c) permanence of water body (P<0.001). Out of 167 species, 32 were acting as indicators. It is suggested that a pond classification could be based on these species alone.  相似文献

Aim of this study was to test the gillnet efficiency in Keban Dam Lake using different baits as attractants. Gillnets of 50 m length (stretched mesh sizes: 40, 50, 55 mm) were employed between January 2009 and December 2010 in the study. Two types of grain (corn and wheat) as well as processed plant material (beet cake) and animal livers were tested as bait to attract both carnivorous and omnivorous species. The catching efficiency of baited and non‐baited gill nets was compared. Overall, a total of 358 fish from eight different species were caught in baited gillnets, whereas only 189 fish were caught with non‐baited gillnets. Most fish (55.90%) were caught with corn, wheat or beet cake as bait; the fewest (59 fish, 9.96%) were captured with animal liver. About 34.1% were caught with non‐baited gillnets. By species, Capoeta trutta (Cyprinidae) was most frequently captured. In conclusion, the gillnets bated with corn, wheat, and beet cake yielded higher catches (P < 0.05) than did the non‐baited monofilament gillnets.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The nutritional value of the bacterivorous ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis and the algivorous ciliate Coleps sp., as well as the heterotrophic flagellate Chilomonas paramecium and the autotrophic flagellate Cryptomonas ovata , were investigated in population growth experiments using the rotifer B. calyciflorus . The two ciliates, both flagellates, which were of similar size, shape and mobility, were each offered as a sole diet and as a supplement to the alga Monoraphidium minutum , known to support reproduction of B. calyciflorus .
2. To further test nutritional differences between the prey organisms, prey selection experiments were conducted in which B. calyciflorus was able to select between the bacterivorous and algivorous ciliate, and between the heterotrophic and autotrophic flagellate.
3. The results demonstrated that both ciliates and the heterotrophic flagellate were not sufficient to support reproduction of B. calyciflorus when offered as a sole diet. They were, however, a good supplement to algal prey (except for the bacterivorous ciliate T. pyriformis ). In the prey selection experiments, B. calyciflorus positively selected for the algivorous Coleps sp. and the autotrophic C. ovata.
4. Overall, ciliates and heterotrophic flagellates may enhance survival of B. calyciflorus , but reproduction of the rotifer is likely to rely on algal prey. Both higher population growth of B. calyciflorus when fed the algivorous Coleps and the autotrophic Cryptomonas, along with their positive selection, give evidence for prey specific differences in nutrition, with algivorous or autotrophic prey species tending to be of higher nutritional value.  相似文献

When investigating the fields of biogeography and macroecology, climate‐ and productivity‐related variables are frequently identified as the strongest correlates of species‐diversity patterns. These variables have been usually merged under the climate/productivity hypothesis and describe the direct and indirect actions of climate on species. Being among the most vulnerable ecosystems to climate change, streams and rivers are expected to be influenced both by climatic and trophic (i.e. productivity‐related) factors. We propose here to distinguish the relative influence of the two processes on large‐scale, long‐term changes in the functional diversity of freshwater invertebrate communities over two decades in France. To this end, we designed two functional indices using invertebrate traits to surrogate the respective mechanisms: climate vulnerability and feeding specialisation. Using geographically weighted regression (GWR) models, we showed that trends in both indices, along with the initial regional species‐pools, have significantly contributed to the overall long‐term increase in functional diversity of invertebrate communities. In addition, we highlighted a strong geographical differentiation in the contribution patterns with the climate vulnerability effect decreasing with latitude and the feeding specialisation effect being higher in headwaters than in large rivers. Finally, taking into account this non‐stationarity in the ecological processes and responses using GWR models allowed explaining about 75% of the long‐term changes in the community diversity. Consequently, this study offers sound perspectives in predicting the future patterns of trends in functional diversity of communities under different scenarios of environmental changes, like climate and/or land‐use.  相似文献

Nematode communities of Lake Tana and other inland water bodies of Ethiopia   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Free-living nematodes from littoral benthic sediments of four lakes, two rivers and a hot spring in Ethiopia are studied. Populations of nematodes encountered are identified to the species level. The general nematode (generic and species) composition of the lakes, rivers and hot spring are appraised by giving special emphasis to the nematodes from L. Tana, i.e. three sites where different environmental factors come into play were considered. Gelda is a site close to a river inlet (River Gelda), Gedero is a site exposed to strong wind action while Zegie is a secluded site protected by a land mass from any strong wind action. Nematode communities were identified using classification and ordination techniques. The identified communities are then characterised with respect to species composition, biomass, density, diversity, size structure, feeding type and maturity index. Also, the vertical distribution of nematodes is examined at the community and species level. An attempt has been made to associate these variations with the considered environmental factors viz. site, water depth, sediment depth, median grain size and percentage of mud in the sediment.  相似文献
