BackgroundMore and more studies have investigated the relationship between serum copper (Cu) and/or zinc (Zn) levels and breast cancer (BC). However, the results are inconsistent. It is unclear whether the serum Cu to Zn ratio (Cu/Zn) is associated with BC risk. Therefore, we evaluated serum Cu and Zn concentrations, and Cu/Zn in BC through meta-analysis.Materials and methodsStudies reporting serum Cu and/or Zn concentrations in BC patients and controls from 1991 to 2020 were identified from PubMed, CNKI, and Wanfang databases online. Based on a random effects model, summary standard mean differences (SMDs) and the corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) were applied to compare the serum levels of Cu, Zn and Cu/Zn between BC patients and controls.ResultsThirty-six eligible studies involving 5747 female subjects were included. The present study illustrated that the BC patients had significantly higher serum Cu levels than healthy controls (HC) (SMD (95 % CI): 1.99(1.48, 2.49)) and patients with benign breast diseases (BD) (SMD (95 % CI): 0.99(0.38, 1.61)). However, Zn concentrations were statistically decreased in BC patients than HC (SMD (95 % CI): -1.20(-1.74, -0.66)) and BD (SMD (95 % CI): -1.13 (-1.73, -0.54)). Cu/Zn concentrations were remarkably increased in BC patients than HC (SMD (95 % CI): 2.75(1.79, 3.60)) and BD (SMD (95 % CI): 2.98(1.91, 4.05)) in some studies.ConclusionThe results show that elevated serum levels of Cu and Cu/Zn, as well as decreased Zn might be associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These three parameters have the potential to distinguish breast cancer from benign breast diseases.  相似文献

BackgroundMeasurements of copper and zinc in transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) show contradictory results.Aim of the studyTo examine serum levels of these minerals in TDT in relation to iron overload indices and erythron variables.MethodsThis study recruited 60 children with TDT and 30 healthy controls aged 3–12 years old.ResultsZinc was significantly higher in TDT children than in controls, while copper and the copper to zinc ratio were significantly lowered in TDT. Serum zinc was significantly associated with the number of blood transfusions and iron overload variables (including serum iron and TS%) and negatively with erythron variables (including hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin). Serum copper was significantly and negatively associated with the same iron overload and erythron variables. The copper to zinc ratio was significantly correlated with iron, TS%, ferritin, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin. Albumin levels were significantly higher in TDT children than in control children.ConclusionOur results suggest that the increase in zinc in children with TDT may be explained by iron loading anemia and hemolysis and the consequent shedding of high amounts of intracellular zinc into the plasma. Increased albumin levels and treatment with Desferral may further contribute towards higher zinc levels in TDT. We suggest that the elevations in zinc in TDT are a compensatory mechanism protecting against infection, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Previous proposals for prophylactic use of zinc supplements in TDT may not be warranted.  相似文献

BackgroundLysyl oxidase (LOX) is a metalloenzyme that requires Cu as a cofactor and it is responsible for the formation of collagen and elastin cross-linking. The objective of this work was to measure the LOX enzyme activity in the heart of bovines with Cu deficiency induced by high molybdenum and sulfur levels in the diet.MethodsEighteen myocardial samples were obtained from Cu-deficient (n = 9) and control (n = 9) Holstein bovines during two similar assays. The samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at −70 °C to measure enzymatic activity. A commercial kit was used, following producer instructions.ResultsThe results showed that LOX activity from the hearts of Cu-deficient bovines is 29 % lower than the ones of control bovines, being this difference statistically significant (p = 0.03).ConclusionTo our knowledge, this is the first report that determined LOX enzymatic activity in bovine heart of Cu-deficient animals. The microscopic alterations found in these animals in our previous work, could be explained by a diminished LOX activity. The results are in agreement with other authors, who found a relationship between LOX activity and dietary Cu intake. The information provided by this work could help to clarify the pathogenesis of cardiac lesions in cattle with dietary Cu deficiency.  相似文献

Because zinc (Zn) is an important component for cell protection against certain oxygen species, it has been suggested that Zn deficiency impairs the potent oxidant defense capacity, which is constitutively provided in the vascular system. However, the influence of dietary Zn deficiency on systemic blood pressure and vascular system is controversial and unclear. We therefore examine the effect of dietary Zn deficiency on systemic blood pressure, a potent superoxide scavenger, aortic Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, a most representative synthase of the endothelium-derived relaxing factor, and aortic endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression. Furthermore, the direct effects of intravenous administration of NOS inhibitor, N ω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME), and a SOD mimetic compound, tempol, in normotensives were tested in Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. A Zn-deficient diet (4 wk) contributed to growth retardation, the decrease in thymus weight, and the lower levels of serum Zn compared with the standard diet group. However, no significant difference in conscious systolic and diastolic blood pressure was found in the Zn-deficiency group. The administration of l-NAME caused an increase in the mean arterial pressure (MAP) levels in the two groups of rats and the involvement of the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO) in the regulation of systemic BP in the normotensive state. On the other hand, administration of the superoxide scavenger, tempol, led to a decrease in MAP levels in the two groups of rats, indicating the participation of the oxygen free radical, superoxide, in the maintenance of the systemic BP in a normotensive state. There were no significant differences between the Zn-deficient diet group and the standard diet group in the normotensive state. eNOS expression and Cu/Zn SOD activity in the aorta were also intact in Zn-deficient normotensive rats. These findings suggest that the 4 wk of Zn deficiency was inadequate to alter systemic blood pressure and focal NO signaling in the normotensive state. Long-term Zn deficiency affects the neuronal, immune, and hematopoietic systems, which contribute to systemic and/or local circulation. However, Zn deficiency alone does not cause hypertension and local vascular dysfunction in the normotensive state.  相似文献

The effects of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) deficiencies on phytosiderophore (PS) exudation by three barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars differing in Zn efficiency were assessed using chelator-buffered nutrient solutions. A similar study was carried out with four wheat (Triticum aestivum L. and T. durum Desf.) cultivars, including the Zn-efficient Aroona and Zn-inefficient Durati. Despite severe Zn deficiency, none of the barley or wheat cultivars studied exhibited significantly elevated PS release rates, although there was significantly enhanced PS exudation under Fe deficiency. Aroona and Durati wheats were grown in a further study of the effects of phosphate (P) supply on PS release, using 100 μM KH2PO4 as high P, or solid hydroxyapatite as a supply of low-release P. Phytosiderophore exudation was not increased due to P treatment under control or Zn-deficient conditions, but was increased by Fe deficiency. Accumulation of P in shoots of Zn- and Fe-deficient plants was seen in both P treatments, somewhat more so under the KH2PO4 treatment. Zinc-efficient wheats and grasses have been previously shown to exude more PS under Zn deficiency than Zn-inefficient genotypes. We did not observe Zn-deficiency-induced PS release and were unable to replicate the results of previous researchers. The tendency for Zn deficiency to induce PS release seems to be method dependent, and we suggest that all reported instances may be explained by an induced physiological deficiency of Fe. Recently, it has been reported that serum zinc binding capacity (ZnBC) is a very important criterion to evaluate body zinc (Zn) status. It has been shown that chronic Zn deficiency occur in the patients with thalassemia major (TM). Zn deficiency in TM may cause hyperzincuria, high ferritin levels, hepatic iron load, hepatic dysfunction. This study was undertaken to determine serum Zn levels and ZnBC in different thalassemia forms and sickle cell disease (SCD). The study has been carried out on 30 Thalassemia Major (TM), 34 Thalassemia Intermedia (TI), 31 Thalassemia Trait (TT) and 10 SCD. As control group,13 healthy children and 20 adults were included. Serum Zn and ZnBC were determined by atomic absorption, then saturation index (SI%: serum Zn/ZnBC x 100) was calculated. Serum Zn levels in all patients were lower than control (p < 0.01). Serum ZnBC was at a normal level in patients with TT and TI but it was found to be lower in TM and SCD than control (p < 0.01). While serum Zn levels decrease and ZnBC increase in nutritionaL Zn deficiency, serum Zn levels decrease but ZnBC doesn't increase in patients with thalassemia.  相似文献

IntroductionPatients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis therapy are at risk of developing deficiencies of essential trace elements and/or overload of toxic trace elements, both of which may significantly affect their clinical status of. Those imbalances may result from the disease itself but also from the quality of the therapeutic process, namely the hemodialysis process, which has greatly evolved in the last decades. Thus, old observations that have been assumed as very well-proven have been recently questioned. In this case-control study we evaluate the current trace elements status in a group of Portuguese patients under hemodialysis therapy.Material and methodsSerum samples from patients (n = 93), collected for the routine periodic control of Al levels, were analyzed for a wide panel of trace elements (Li, Al, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Ba, Pb) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique (hemodialysis patients’ group). For comparison purposes, samples of individuals with no evidence of renal disease according to standard laboratory analytical criteria (n = 50) were also analyzed (control group).ResultsThe results showed significant differences between the two groups, with higher values in hemodialysis patients group for Al (14.6 vs. 9.5 μg/L), Co, Ni, Sr, Mo (4.5 vs. 1.4 μg/L), Cd (0.058 vs. 0.025 μg/L) and Pb (0.55 vs. 0.30 μg/L); and lower values in hemodialysis patients group for Li (4.0 vs. 75.8 μg/L), Mn, Cu (943.5 vs. 1038.5 μg/L), Zn (943.5 vs. 1038.5 μg/L), Se (71.5 vs. 103.8 μg/L), Rb (202.4 vs. 300.3 μg/L) and Ba (0.65 vs. 8.7 μg/L).ConclusionThis study confirms that hemodialysis patients tend to present significant trace elements imbalances, which may be related to the higher morbidity and mortality observed in this specific patients’ group.  相似文献

BackgroundThis national cross-sectional survey aimed to assess the iodine status in pregnant women and their offspring, and also to demonstrate regional differences by measuring urinary iodine concentration (UIC). For each woman and her newborn a questionnaire was prepared with basic facts as age, parity number or birth weight and additional information regarding thyroid diseases, use of iodized salt in the household, extra iodine supplementation during pregnancy, education level and wage income.MethodsThe target population represented 1444 pregnant women who gave birth between January 1 st, 2018 and 2019, and their offspring. Iodine deficiency for pregnant women and their offspring were defined as urine iodine level <150 μg/L and <100 μg/L, respectively. Results are given as median (25th–75th percentile).ResultsThe median UIC in the group of pregnant woman was 94 (52–153) μg/L. Within the sample of 1444 pregnant women, UIC indicative of mild iodine deficiency (100−149 μg/L) was present in 21 % (n = 306), moderate deficiency (50−99 μg/L) in 30 % (n = 430), and severe deficiency (<50 μg/L) in 23 % (n = 337). This study showed a prevalence of 74 % of iodine deficiency in Turkish pregnant woman. The median UIC in the group of offspring was 96 (41−191) μg/L. Within the new-borns, UIC indicative of mild iodine deficiency (50−99 μg/L) was present in 22 % (n = 323), moderate deficiency (20−49 μg/L) in 15 % (n = 222), and severe deficiency (<20 μg/L) in 13 % (n = 192). This survey showed a prevalence of 51 % of iodine deficiency in Turkish new-borns. Pregnant women with lower socioeconomic and education level, lower access to household iodized salt, lower rates of exposure to povidone-iodine containing skin disinfectant, higher parity and higher iodine deficiency had higher rates of iodine deficiency in their offspring. Regional differences were observed both in mothers and their offspring concerning their iodine status.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that iodine deficiency is still an important public health problem in Turkey. More drastic measures should be taken to decrease these important iodine deficiencies, both in pregnant women and in their offspring.  相似文献

The hypothesis that copper (Cu) alters drug metabolizing enzymes and functions as an antioxidant nutrient in doxorubicin cardiotoxicity was tested. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed Cu adequate (+Cu; 5 mg Cu/kg of diet), marginally Cu deficient (MCu; 1.2 mg Cu/kg of diet), or severely Cu deficient (Cu; 0.5 mg Cu/kg of diet) diets for 6 wk. Doxorubicin (1, 2, or 4 mg/kg body wt) or saline were administered intraperitoneally 1 time/wk for 4 wk. Compared to control hearts, Cu, Zn superoxide dismutase activity was decreased by 9% in MCu rats and by 21–40% inCu rats. Glutathione peroxidase activity was elevated 5–15% inCu rats. Doxorubicin administration increased heart Cu, Zn superoxide dismutase activity in+Cu andCu rats 18 h after the last of 4 injections, but not 18 h after 1 injection. There was no synergism between doxorubicin and Cu deficiency on lipid peroxidation, plasma creatine phosphokinase, cardiac hypertrophy, electrocardiographic abnormalities, or morphological changes. Heart glutathione S-transferase activity was decreased by Cu deficiency, and like Cu, Zn superoxide dismutase activity, returned to normal inCu rats given doxorubicin. Thus, the Cu deficient rat heart may be able to compensate for doxorubicin-induced oxidant stress by increasing the activity of Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase and glutathione S-transferase.  相似文献

Abstract

Nitration-induced protein damage in the placenta leads to impaired blood flow and deficient feto–placental exchange in diabetic pregnancies. This work studied the effect of nitric oxide and peroxynitrite on Cu/Zn SOD activity in rat placentas and evaluated whether Cu/Zn SOD is nitrated in the placenta from diabetic rats at mid-gestation. Protein nitration was evaluated by EIA, Cu/Zn SOD activity by inhibition of the epinephrine auto-oxidation, Cu/Zn SOD expression by western blot and specific nitration by immunoprecipitation. This study found higher levels of protein nitration (p < 0.001), diminished Cu/Zn SOD activity and enhanced protein expression (p < 0.01) in placentas from diabetic rats. Placental Cu/Zn SOD activity was inhibited by peroxynitrite (p < 0.01). Besides, nitration of Cu/Zn SOD was elevated in placentas from diabetic rats (p < 0.01). These results show that rat Cu/Zn SOD can be nitrated, a modification that could lead to the depressed activity of this enzyme found in placentas from diabetic rats.

In this study, zinc (Zn) deficiency caused a significant reduction in growth parameters and tissue Zn concentrations in BRRI 33 (sensitive) but not in Pokkali (tolerant). The increase of proton extrusion in both genotypes under high pH suggests that it gets triggered as a common consequence of reducing pH and solubilization of Zn. Real-time PCR showed pronounced upregulation of OsZIP4, OsDMAS1, OsNAS2 and OsPCS1 in Zn-deficient roots of Pokkali, and to a lesser extent in BRRI 33 only for OsZIP4 and OsPCS1. This suggests that OsDMAS1, OsNAS2 and OsPCS1 functions as secondary consequences leading to higher chelation and uptake of Zn under Zn deficiency in Pokkali. Further, a major increase in CAT, POD, SOD, GR and key metabolites suggests that high antioxidant defense plays a critical role in Zn deficiency tolerance in Pokkali. Further, Pokkali self-grafts and plants having Pokkali rootstock combined with BRRI 33 scion showed no significant decline in plant height, root dry matter and Zn concentration along with upregulation of Zn transporters (OsZIP4 and OsIRT1) under Zn deficiency, suggesting that signal driving mechanisms for Zn deficiency tolerance mechanisms are generated in the root and Zn-inefficient BRRI 33 is not capable of producing signals or sensing them.  相似文献

It has been frequently suggested that root exudates play a role in trace metal mobilization and uptake by plants, but there is little in vivo evidence. We studied root exudation of dicotyledonous plants in relation to mobilization and uptake of Cu and Zn in nutrient solutions and in a calcareous soil at varying Cu and Zn supply. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) were grown on resin-buffered nutrient solutions at varying free ion activities of Cu (pCu 13.0–10.4) and Zn (pZn 10.1–6.6). The Cu and Zn concentrations in the nutrient solution increased with time, except in plant-free controls, indicating that the plant roots released organic ligands that mobilized Cu and Zn from the resin. At same pCu, soluble Cu increased more at low Zn supply, as long as Zn deficiency effects on growth were small. Zinc deficiency was observed in most treatment solutions with pZn ≥ 9.3, but not in nutrient solutions of a smaller volume/plant ratio in which higher Zn concentrations were observed at same pZn. Root exudates of Zn-deficient plants showed higher specific UV absorbance (SUVA, an indicator of aromaticity and metal affinity) than those of non-deficient plants. Measurement of the metal diffusion flux with the DGT technique showed that the Cu and Zn complexes in the nutrient solutions were highly labile. Diffusive transport (through the unstirred layer surrounding the roots) of the free ion only could not explain the observed plant uptake of Cu and of Zn at low Zn2+ activity. The Cu and Zn uptake by the plants was well explained if it was assumed that the complexes with root exudates contributed 0.4% (Cu) or 20% (Zn) relative to the free ion. In the soil experiment, metal concentrations and organic C concentrations were larger in the solution of planted soils than in unplanted controls. The SUVA of the soil solution after plant growth was higher for unamended soils, on which the plants were Zn-deficient, than for Zn-amended soils. In conclusion, root exudates of dicotyledonous plants are able to mobilize Cu and Zn, and plants appear to respond to Zn deficiency by exuding root exudates with higher metal affinity.  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that Cu deficiency can induce root reductase activity, but the ecological and physiological significance of this is unknown. This study compared the characteristics of root reductase activity induced by Cu deficiency with those induced by Fe deficiency in red clover (Trifolium pratenseL. cv. Kenland), a Fe-efficient plant. Effects of other nutritional stresses were also investigated for comparison. Compared with the effect of Fe deficiency, Cu deficiency induced only a moderate level of root reductase activity, while other nutrient stresses had no effect, or even inhibited the root reductases activity, especially in the case of Zn deficiency. Compared with Fe deficiency-induced Fe(III)-chelate reductase, Cu deficiency-induced reductase displayed a different pattern of induction. The activity of the Cu deficiency-induced reductase in intact plants increased with time; in decapitated plants it showed a distinct peak at a later stage of the treatment. The Fe concentration in the roots was significantly increased under Cu deficiency. Furthermore, the reductase activity was presented in the entire root system, contrary to what was observed for the Fe-deficiency-induced reductase activity, which was confined to the root apex. Cu deficiency did not increase proton extrusion from the roots, even when growth was significantly affected. The present results suggest that in red clover Cu deficiency induces a root reductase that is different from the reductase induced by Fe deficiency.  相似文献

Cu contamination soil (547 mg kg–1) was mixed separately with the surface-modified nano-scale carbon black (MCB) and placed in the ratios (w/w) of 0, 1%, 3%, and 5% in pots, together with 0.33 g KH2PO4and 0.35 g urea/pot. Each pot contained 20 ryegrass seedlings (Lolium multiflorum). Greenhouse cultivation experiments were conducted to examine the effect of the MCB on Cu and Zn fractionations in soil, accumulation in shoot and growth of ryegrass. The results showed that the biomass of ryegrass shoot and root increased with the increasing of MCB adding amount (p < 0.05). The Cu and Zn accumulation in ryegrass shoot and the concentrations of DTPA extractable Cu and Zn in soil were significantly decreased with the increasing of MCB adding amount (p < 0.05). The metal contents of exchangeable and bound to carbonates (EC-Cu or EC-Zn) in the treatments with MCB were generally lower than those without MCB, and decreased with the increasing of MCB adding amount (p < 0.05). There was a positive linear correlation between the Cu and Zn accumulation in ryegrass shoot and the EC-Cu and EC-Zn in soil. The present results indicated the MCB could be applied for the remediation the soils polluted by Cu and Zn.  相似文献

IntroductionIn chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection there is increased iron absorption leading to iron overload, a fact that may promote ferritin synthesis. Theoretically, increased ferritin should promote ongoing liver fibrosis but disparate results have been described.ObjectiveWe analyze the behavior of iron metabolism- related variables, comparing them with fibrosis and inflammatory activity in liver biopsy in HCV infected patients.Patients and MethodsWe analyzed among 90 HCV patients subjected to liver biopsy prior to antiviral treatment the relationships of serum levels of iron, ferritin, transferrin, transferrin saturation index (TSI) and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) with liver fibrosis and histological severity, assessed by Metavir-f, Metavir-a and Knodell indices, as well as with liver function, and also compared the aforementioned iron metabolism- related variables with 34 controls.ResultsPatients showed higher values of sideremia (T = 2.04; p = 0.044) and transferrin (T = 2.29; p = 0.004) compared with controls; but not ferritin, that was significantly higher among the 33 patients who also consumed alcohol (Z = 2.05; p = 0.041). Most patients showed a well preserved liver function (86 cases, Child A). Patients with Child B or C showed higher ferritin levels (Z = 2.68; p = 0.007) and TSI (Z = 2.41; p = 0.016), but lower transferrin and TIBC (Z = 3.25; p = 0.001) than Child A patients. Transferrin and TIBC were directly related to albumin (ρ = 0.24; p = 0.026), whereas bilirubin showed direct relationships with iron (ρ = 0.25; p = 0.016), TSI (ρ = 0.39; p < 0.001) and ferritin (ρ = 0.36; p < 0.001). Both ferritin (ρ = −0.22; p = 0.04) and TSI (ρ = −0.25; p = 0.016) were related to platelet count. No relationships were observed between iron variables and Knodell index, but serum iron, serum transferrin, and TSI were directly related to Metavir-f score (ρ = 0.28; p = 0.009, ρ = 0.22; p = 0.044, and ρ = 0.22; p = 0.044, in this order).ConclusionAlterations of iron related variables are relatively subtle in our series of 90 well compensated HCV patients. Serum ferritin was not related to liver fibrosis and increases only when alcoholism co-exists with HCV infection.  相似文献

BackgroundImbalances in metal concentrations have been suggested to contribute to the pathophysiology of different brain disorders, such as bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ).ObjectivesThe aim of this exploratory study is to evaluate the association between the concentrations of macro/trace elements in serum from BD and SCZ patients considering the effects from different treatments.MethodsEleven subjects with SCZ, seven with BD treated with lithium (BDL) and eight subjects with BD treated with other medications except lithium (BDN) were recruited for the study, as well as eleven healthy controls (HC). Serum concentrations of eleven macro/trace elements (Se, Zn, Fe, K, Ca, Mg, P, Al, Cu, Mn, and Ni) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).ResultsSe and Zn concentrations were significantly lower for patients with SCZ and BD in comparison to HC by one-way ANOVA test. Moreover, serum concentrations for Fe were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in BDN (548 ± 92 μg L−1) and SCZ (632 ± 279 μg L−1) in comparison to HC (421 ± 121 μg L−1). A significant negative correlation was reported between Se and Fe in BDL group (r = −0.935, p < 0.05). In addition, a significantly higher Cu/Zn ratio was determined in SCZ group against HC (ratio = 2.4, p = 0.028).ConclusionsThe obtained results suggest that the imbalance in Fe concentrations is an effect of BD treatment. Lithium is supposed to have an antagonist effect for Se in BDL patients. A negative correlation reported between Fe and BMI in SCZ group could be related to antipsychotic treatment and the Cu/Zn ratio reported could be considered as a suggesting parameter to relate oxidative stress to SCZ. Future studies including larger number of patients with SCZ and BD before and after treatment are necessary to confirm the investigative results presented herein.  相似文献

In a previous study, we demonstrated that Arabidopsis Antioxidant Protein1 (ATX1) plays an essential role in copper (Cu) homeostasis, conferring tolerance to both excess and subclinically deficient Cu. The Cu-binding motif MXCXXC was required for the physiological function of ATX1. In this study, we found that overexpression of ATX1 resulted in hypersensitivity to severe Cu deficiency despite enhancing tolerance to subclinical Cu deficiency. However, overexpression of mutated ATX1, replacing the Cu-binding motif MXCXXC with MXGXXG, abolished the hypersensitivity, for no differences from the wild type under the same conditions. Thus, the expression of ATX1 must be cautiously regulated to avoid homeostatic imbalance with the over-chelation of Cu.  相似文献

Deficiency in the intake of trace elements, such as copper (Cu), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn), is very common in the general population of most developing countries. A preliminary study in India and Pakistan showing the plasma levels of Zn and Fe indicates that approx 50% of the subjects who participated have low levels of both Fe and Zn, suggesting a marginal deficiency. The low plasma levels of these elements are more pronounced in females. The mean levels of Ze, Cu, and Fe in the plasma of 83 subjects were 0.71 ± 0.11, 0.96 ± 0.10, and 0.80 ± 0.12 mg/L, respectively. The Cu:Zn ratio in the plasma was 1.43 ± 0.16. Three groups of 15 subjects each were given three different levels of oral supplements of Zn (15, 30, and 45 mg of Zn as Zn gluconate) for 6 wk, and blood samples were analyzed during various intervals. Plasma concentration of Zn increased significantly (p < 0.001) in all the groups after 4 wk of supplementation and reached almost normal levels after 6 wk. Along with the increase in Zn, there was a significant decrease(p < 0.001) in plasma Cu levels. There were no changes in the concentration of Fe during the supplementation period. The supplementation was well tolerated by most subjects. The results of this pilot study indicate that Zn supplementation is a practical possibility comparable to that of Fe supplementation in order to prevent marginal Zn deficiency in vulnerable groups in the general population of developing countries.  相似文献
