Bones from an Arabian site dating back to the 2nd millenium BC have been studied for their special decomposition patterns resulting from desert burial conditions. This bone diagenesis was caused by dissolution and recrystallization processes in the mineral matrix. Also extensive secondary mineralisation by formation of CaCO3 could be found. This secondary contamination with carbonate has to be taken in account within biochemical analyses of excavated bones. Despite the extensive diagenetic changes routine histology could be done on the samples by the use of microradiography.  相似文献

本文采用扫描电镜/能谱、X-射线衍射、红外光谱分析等不同检测方法,对湖北郧西县白龙洞红色黏土地层中出土的骨化石表面黑色膜壳状物质进行检测分析。分析结果为骨化石表面黑色膜壳层中含有碳羟磷灰石[Ca10(PO4)3(CO3)3(OH)2]、方解石(CaCO3),以及菱铁矿(FeCO3)、赤铁矿(Fe2O3)、磷铁矿[Fe25(PO4)14(OH)24]等。其中显色物相主要为菱铁矿、赤铁矿与磷铁矿的共生沉积物。菱铁矿、赤铁矿与磷铁矿三者共生, 使骨化石表面膜壳状矿物质层整体颜色呈现为黑色。该层黑色膜壳状矿物质层的形成原因, 与化石周围土壤中的CO32-和Fe有关。该层黑色膜壳状矿物质的存在, 对红色黏土中骨化石长期保存有一定保护作用, 它能阻隔和减轻埋藏环境中酸性腐蚀、地层挤压等自然原因对化石标本造成破坏, 因此也使骨化石能够保存得较为完整。  相似文献

The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation has yielded some of the most important, voluminous and diverse dinosaur bonebeds in western North America, yet many of its historic sites were excavated during the celebrated period of vertebrate paleontology in western North America referred to as the first and second “Great Dinosaur Rush” (1870-1910s). Because of the large quantity of fossils collected during this era, a considerable amount of data pertaining to patterns of sedimentation, preservation, and paleoecology across broad portions of the Morrison Formation (and indeed many other Mesozoic and Cenozoic units) is still poorly understood. This paper critically re-evaluates the Sheridan College Quarry 1 dinosaur bonebed which lies along the western rim of the Powder River Basin in the region of localities excavated during Utterback's expeditions in the 1900s. Sedimentologically, the bonebed is interpreted as having been formed by episodic flooding events affecting the proximal floodplain depocenter of a meandering river system. Limited evidence of bone abrasion or rounding and progressive upsection changes in bone orientations suggest that minimal transport occurred, but that at least four episodes of overbank flooding resulted in the concentration and burial of attritional, time averaged vertebrate skeletal material that accumulated in topographic lows on the floodplain. Taphonomic analysis indicates that multiple unassociated to partially associated fossil elements excavated represent at least three taxa of sauropod dinosaurs, whereas isolated elements from the site indicate the presence of several other small vertebrate taxa. This work provides significant new information not only about the Sheridan College Quarry 1, but also about local sedimentary and taphonomic conditions that were likely influential to burial and preservation of other nearby Morrison dinosaur localities in the Big Horn Mountains, most notably those excavated during the famous Utterback expeditions. This study highlights the research potential in reconstructing lost data for historic dinosaur localities.  相似文献

A portion of a left humerus from the Upper Maastrichtian of Vratsa district (NW Bulgaria) is shown to be from a non-avian theropod dinosaur: this is the first record of a dinosaur from Bulgaria. We describe this bone, suggest that it most likely pertains to an ornithomimosaur, and discuss the fossil record of other similar taxa of Late Cretaceous age that have been reported from Europe. To investigate the taphonomy of this fossil, rare earth element (REE) analysis is combined with strontium (Sr) isotope data to confirm that this Bulgarian dinosaur bone was initially fossilized in a terrestrial environment, then later re-worked into late Maastrichtian marine sediments. □ Bulgaria , Dinosauria , Late Cretaceous , Ornithomimosauria , rare earth elements , Sr isotopes , taphonomy , Theropoda .  相似文献

Changes in bone structure as a function of age have been studied by simple inspection, x-ray imaging, stereo-photography, deep field optical microscopy, circularly polarised light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), including both topographic and compositional backscattered electron (BSE) imaging modes. The study of bone as a three-dimensional object, rather than in thin sections, enables us to envisage modelling and remodelling processes in context. The study of ultra-flat block surfaces permits the acquisition of data from an effectively very thin layer in the block face, and to examine bone as a spectrum of tissue types varying in the degree of mineralisation. Particular attention has been paid in our earlier studies to the iliac crest, lumbar vertebral bodies, femoral mid-shaft, neck and head and parietal and frontal skull bones. Recently, we have compared findings from these sites with observations on the mandible. We conclude, from our new imaging data, that common generalisations about the changes in bone in ageing and osteoporosis are too simplified, and that the mandible differs sufficiently from post-cranial skeletal sites that it would be unwise to extrapolate from findings in the jaw to the circumstances elsewhere.  相似文献

简要报道了安徽省黄山地区所发现的恐龙足迹化石。从脚印的形态和足迹上看,至少有三种不同的恐龙(蜥脚类、兽脚类、鸟脚类)共同生存过,其中多数恐龙为两足行走性的。记述了两个典型的小型兽脚类和小型鸟脚类恐龙所留下的脚印化石。黄山地区恐龙足迹、骨骼化石及其蛋化石的发现,对于研究晚白垩世恐龙生活习性以及古气候环境均有着一定的意义。  相似文献

通过对四川自贡大山铺恐龙动物群中两种主要蜥脚类恐龙—李氏蜀龙和天府峨眉龙肱骨和尺骨的骨组织结构观察,并与我国晚白垩世的几种恐龙长骨进行对比,结果发现:1)恐龙的长骨都具有快速的后生生长速率;2)恐龙的生长方式属于非限定生长,即在成年后并不停止生长;3)不同类型的恐龙到了成年以后,其骨沉积速率可能有较大差异;4)不同类型的恐龙在长骨的生长改建过程中,骨组织内部的重吸收作用有较大差异;5)生长轮结构在不同部位的骨骼中或在骨骼的生长发育过程中可能也有较大差异。  相似文献

Skulls and limb bones of reptiles from Mid-Triassic rocks in southern Brazil show striking morphological and volumetric differences among specimens from the same taxonomic group; this is caused by early calcite cementation. Petrographic analysis of 40 thin sections of selected fossil bones demonstrates that the main agent of fossilization was precipitation of calcite and minor hematite in the pores of bones during early burial mineralization. The framework of the bones has been broken and replaced by calcite (and hematite), beginning in the spongy inner part of the bone (the cancellous bone) and gradually extending into the compact external layers. Three taphonomic groups of fossil bones are recognized: I – those almost entirely retaining their original structure and shape; II – those whose internal structure is destroyed, but which still have solid outer 'bone surface', and III – those composed of fragments of bone apatite 'floating' in a carbonate matrix. Destruction of the bone structure was caused by the displacive force of calcite crystallization, which typically occurs at shallow burial, during early diagenesis. This process occurs in the vadose zone and requires markedly alternating wet and dry seasons, which indicates a semi-arid paleoclimate for the south Brazilian Mid-Triassic, an inference consistent with other paleoclimatic data. Diagenesis can significantly alter the shape and size of bones and cause considerable morphological variation within the same fossil group, possibly leading to taxonomic misinterpretation.  相似文献

Most studies of insect traces on fossil bone deal with one or two trace morphs found on isolated bone fragments, making it difficult to identify the trace-maker and its behavior. We report the discovery of a suite of insect traces on an articulated Camptosaurus dinosaur skeleton that permits the identification of the trace-maker and interpretations of its behavior. The traces include mandible marks, pits, and shallow bores on cortical bone, and deep, meandering furrows and tunnels (borings) on articular surfaces. The interiors of bones are intensely mined, and the cavities and borings are filled with fine bone fragments (insect frass). The distinctive mandible marks consist of opposing sets of parallel grooves, indicating the maker had two apical teeth set on symmetrical mandibles and that all of the traces were made by a single taxon. Comparison of the fossils with the mandible morphology and bone traces of extant insects indicates dermestid beetles made the traces. Based on extant dermestid behavior, soft tissues were likely absent and the bones were lipid-laden when the traces were made. Examination of more than 5,000 bones from the Morrison and Cedar Mountain formations shows insect traces on bone are common but overlooked and that many bones are substantially damaged by insect mining. The key to the recognition of these important yet subtle traces is a search model and an intense, oblique light source.  相似文献

The contamination of paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridylium dichloride) herbicide from the farming area has become a public concern in many countries. This herbicide harms to human health and negatively effects the soil fertility. Several methods have been introduced for the remediation of paraquat. In this study, 20 isolates of the paraquat-tolerant fungi were isolated from the contaminated soil samples in northern Thailand. We found that isolate PRPY-2 and PFCM-1 exhibited the highest degradation activity of paraquat on synthetic liquid medium. About 80 and 68% of paraquat were removed by PRPY-2 and PFCM-1 respectively after 15 days of cultivation. Based on the morphological characteristic and molecular analysis, the fungal isolate PRPY-2 and PFCM-1 were identified as Aspergillus tamarii and Cunninghamella sp. respectively. The biosorption of paraquat on these fungal mycelia was also investigated. It was found that only 8–10% of paraquat could be detected on their mycelia, while 24–46% of paraquat was degraded by fungal mycelia. This is the first report on paraquat degrading ability by A. tamarii and Cunninghamella sp. It is demonstrated that these filamentous fungi are promising microorganisms available for remediation of paraquat contaminated environment.  相似文献

High-energy, high-charge (HZE) radiation, including iron ions ((56)Fe(26+)), is a component of the space environment. We recently observed a profound loss of trabecular bone in mice after whole-body HZE irradiation. The goal of this study was to examine morphology in bones that were excluded from a (56)Fe(26+) beam used to irradiate the body. Using 10-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats and excluding the hind limbs and pelvis, we irradiated animals with 0, 1, 2 and 4 Gy (56)Fe(26+) ions and killed them humanely after 9 months. Animals grew throughout the experiment. Trabecular bone volume, connectivity and thickness within the proximal tibiae were significantly lower than control in a dose-dependent manner. Irradiated animals generally had less body mass than controls, which largely accounted for the variability in bone parameters as determined by ANCOVA. Likewise, lower cortical parameters were associated with reduced mass. However, lesser trabecular thickness in the 4-Gy group could not be attributed to body mass alone. Indicators of bone metabolism were generally unchanged, suggesting stabilized turnover. Exposure to (56)Fe(26+) ions can alter trabecular microarchitecture in shielded bones. Reduced body mass seems to be correlated with these deficits of trabecular and cortical bone.  相似文献

Excavation of a pithouse village of Anasazi Indians occupied during Pueblo II (A. D. 900-1100) near Littlefield, Arizona, uncovered 14 adult, children and infant burial sites. Iron measurements were made of samples of bone and the sand surrounding the bones at each burial site. Iron in the bones were found to be equivalent to present day normal values. Iron content in the sand surrounding the bones was low and no relationship was noted between the bone iron and the sand iron. These findings are probably valid only for regions where there is good skeletal preservation. The findings support the concept that the diet of these prehistoric Anasazi Indians was nutritionally adequate.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and strontium (Sr) in the cartilage with adjacent compact bone and spongy bone collected from patients after total hip replacement surgery. In addition, we examined relations between the concentrations of the metals in the bone and selected environmental factors. The concentration of Fe was the highest while Mn concentration was the lowest. The concentrations of Fe in the spongy bone in patients from larger cities were higher than in those living in smaller towns and villages. Significant correlations were found between Fe and Mn concentrations in the cartilage with adjacent compact bone and in the spongy bone, and between Mn and Sr in the spongy bone. In general, Mn, Fe and Sr concentrations in the bones of patients from NW Poland were lower than in other Polish regions and Europe, especially in industrialized countries. In conclusion, it seems that in addition to routine monitoring of the abiotic environment, it is essential to monitor concentrations of heavy metals having a long-term impact in humans.  相似文献

简要回顾了莱阳恐龙和恐龙蛋化石群的研究历史和以杨钟健为代表的老一代地质古生物学者对莱阳恐龙和恐龙蛋研究发现的杰出贡献,并介绍了莱阳恐龙和恐龙蛋的最新发现和若干研究进展.在近年来对莱阳周边地层进行的大规模考察中,发现了一系列发育在平原上的恐龙峡谷群,以及其中蕴含的十几个恐龙和恐龙蛋新地点和新层位.2010年开始,在对莱阳金岗口村附近的2个化石地点的发掘中,发现了以鸭嘴龙科为主的大量脊椎动物化石和蛋化石,包括一类新的栉龙亚科成员,一些大型兽脚类恐龙化石,以及一新的龟鳖类蛋化石等.2号地点化石富集层具有典型的泥石流沉积特征和骨骼埋藏特征.对棘鼻青岛龙的特殊头饰进行了CT扫描和三维重建,发现其头饰是实心结构,但其他骨骼特征证明棘鼻青岛龙属于具有头饰的赖氏龙亚科是确定无疑的,所以目前发现的头饰应不是其真实状态或根本不属于其头部骨骼.此外,对谭氏龙1属3种的重新观察研究得出以下结论:中国谭氏龙和金刚口谭氏龙应是有效属种,但部分骨骼还有疑问,还需要进一步研究,而莱阳谭氏龙为无效属种.  相似文献

Nied?wiedzki, G., Gorzelak, P. & Sulej, T. 2010: Bite traces on dicynodont bones and the early evolution of large terrestrial predators. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 87–92. Dicynodont (Synapsida: Anomodontia) bones from the Late Triassic (late Norian/early Rhaetian) of Poland yield characteristic tooth marks that can be attributed to three ichnotaxa (Linichnus serratus, Knethichnus parallelum and Nihilichnus nihilicus). The general shape and dimension of these traces perfectly match the dental morphology of a co‐occurring carnivorous dinosaur. It is therefore concluded that early carnivorous dinosaurs were feeding on dicynodonts. This discovery constitutes one of the oldest evidence of dinosaur predator–prey interaction. It is suggested that an evolutionary increase in the size of dicynodonts across the Late Triassic may have been driven by selection pressure to reach a size refuge from early dinosaur predators. □Bite traces, dicynodonts, dinosaurs, predation, Triassic.  相似文献

We report the oldest fossil evidence of osteophagia by terrestrial invertebrates on both the Asian and African continents. Bones attributable to the Middle Jurassic dinosaur Chuanjiesaurus (Dinosauria: Sauropoda) were found with post-mortem insect modification in the Chuanjie Formation, Yunnan Province, China. The morphology of the borings closely matches the ichnogenus Cubiculum. Based on the lack of bioglyphs observed in Cubiculum ornatus, a new ichnospecies is proposed here. The new trace fossil, Cubiculum inornatus isp. nov., is interpreted to have been constructed for pupation by an unknown taxon of insect. Additionally, we report even older borings from Early Jurassic dinosaur bones of the Elliott Formation in the Karoo Basin, which represent the second oldest occurrence of insect traces in bone from continental settings. Both trace fossils sites have palaeogeographic implications for the origins and dispersal of osteophagia amongst terrestrial invertebrates during the Mesozoic. These discoveries push back the antiquity of pupation in animal bones by more than 100 million years to the Middle Jurassic, indicating that this behaviour, and osteophagy more generally, originated early in the Mesozoic, roughly comparable with the origination of insect pupation in woody substrates (Late Triassic).  相似文献

Hypophosphatasia is a rare autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism characterized by a defective bone mineralisation and deficiency of serum and tissue liver/bone/kidney alkaline phosphatase activity. We report the characterisation of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) gene mutation in a patient affected by infantile hypophosphatasia. This boy was the first child of non affected, non related parents. At 1 month of age he presented with palsy of the left upper limb with hypotonia. Length was - 2SD. The anterior fontanel was large. There was a markedly decreased ossification of all bones. All limbs were shortened. Ultrasonographic examination of the kidneys showed nephrocalcinosis. Level of alkaline phosphatases was decreased in the child as well as in the parents. Bone density was decreased. At 2 years of age development was delayed. Weight was - 3,5 SD and OFC - 3SD. The child had craniosynostosis. Molecular studies showed 2 missense mutations, both in exon 6 of the TNSALP gene.  相似文献

The aim of the project was to assess the relationship between zinc status and bone mineralisation in pre-menarcheal adolescent girls. One hundred and thirty-nine healthy pre-menarcheal girls (Tanner pubic hair stage < or = 4), aged 12.4 +/- 1.0 years, had two visits at an interval of 2 years. Serum and urine zinc concentrations (Zn S; Zn U; Zn U/ creatinine), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I), and markers of bone turn-over, i.e. osteocalcin and parathormone (PTH), concentrations were measured at the first visit. Lumbar (L2-L4) bone mineral content and density (BMC, BMD) were measured at both visits. BMC and BMD and their increase at the follow-up after 2 years were compared with biochemical data by multiple regression. The stage of puberty was added as a covariable in the analysis. At the first visit, a significant correlation was found between sexual maturity and initial BMC, BMD, height, weight, and IGF-I. Zn S was negatively correlated with osteocalcin. Zn U showed a positive correlation with BMC, BMD, IGF-I, height, weight, and PTH. At the second visit, sexual maturity showed a positive correlation with BMD and weight increments and a negative one with BMC and height gains. Zn S was significantly related with BMD increase. These correlations suggest that zinc plays a role in normal growth and bone mineralisation during puberty onset.  相似文献

To clarify the role of the fungal nitrate assimilation pathway in nitrate reduction by mycorrhizal plants, nitrate reductase (NR)-deficient (NR) mutants of the ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete Hebeloma cylindrosporum Romagnesi have been selected. These mutants were produced by u.v. mutagenesis on protoplasts originating from homokaryotic mycelia belonging to complementary mating types of this heterothallic tetrapolar species. Chlorate-resistant mutants were first selected in the presence of different nitrogen (N) sources in the culture medium. Among 1495 chlorate resistant mycelia, 30 failed to grow on nitrate and lacked a detectable NR activity. Growth tests on different N sources suggested that the NR activity of all the different mutants is specifically impaired as a result of mutations in either the gene coding for NR apoprotein or genes controlling the synthesis of the molybdenum cofactor. Furthermore, restoration of NR activity in some of the dikaryons obtained after crosses between the different mutant mycelia suggested that not all the selected mutations mapped in the same gene. Utilization of N on a NH415NO3 medium was studied for two mutant strains and their corresponding wild-type homokaryons. None of the mutants could use nitrate whereas 15N enrichment values indicated that 13–27% of N present in 13-d-old wild-type mycelia originated from nitrate. Apparently, the mutant mycelia do not compensate their inability to use nitrate by a more efficient use of ammonium. These different NR mutants still form mycorrhizas with the habitual host plant, Pinus pinaster (Ait.), making them suitable for study of the contribution of the fungal nitrate assimilation pathway to nitrate assimilation by mycorrhizal plants.  相似文献
