Summary The brackish-water clamRangia cuneata maintains the body fluids hyperosmotic to diluted sea-water of osmolalities less than 200–300 mOsm (Fig. 1). Analyses of pericardial fluid pH, protein concentration and chloride concentration (Table 2, Figs. 3, 2) negate the participation of a Gibbs-Donnan effect in the establishment of the hyperosmolality. The protein concentration of the body fluids decreases with decreasing water osmolality from a mean of 1.3 mg/ml at 416 mOsm to a mean 0.3 mg/ml at 27 mOsm.  相似文献

Plasma osmolality was measured in 60 healthy infants aged 1 to 3 months. The mean plasma osmolality in the 14 breast-fed infants (group A) was 284·3 mOsm/1. Nine infants fed artificial milk formulae alone (group B) had a mean value of 293·8 mOsm/1.; 37 infants already receiving solid foods in addition to artificial milk formulae (group C) had a mean value of 297·1 mOsm/1. The number of individual observations in the hyperosmolar range (more than 300 mOsm/1.) in groups A, B, and C were 0, 1, and 15, accounting respectively for 0%, 11·1%, and 40·5% of the total number of observations in each group. These results suggest that the early introduction to solid foods and the widespread use of artificial milk formulae at the expense of breast-feeding during the first three months of life result in an excessive dietary solute intake. This considerably stretches the ability of the immature kidney to maintain normal plasma tonicity. Minimal loss of water could precipitate a dangerous situation for babies with hyperosmolar plasma.  相似文献

Insectivores gain macronutrients and elements from consuming arthropod prey, but must also deal with indigestible components (i.e., exoskeleton) of prey. For example, avian chicks (e.g., northern bobwhites; Colinus virginianus) have limited gut space, and ingesting prey with relatively higher proportions of indigestible components may impact assimilation efficiency, growth, and survival. The ability of insectivores to choose higher quality prey would depend on prey taxa varying consistently in nutritional content. We tested whether there were consistent differences among taxonomic orders of arthropod prey in their macronutrient (protein and lipid), elemental (C and N), and exoskeleton content. We used northern bobwhite chicks as our focal insectivore and focused on their potential prey as a case study. We also tested the influence of indigestible exoskeleton on the measurement of macronutrient content and the ability of elemental content to predict macronutrients. We found large and consistent variation in macronutrient and elemental content between arthropod orders. Some orders had consistently high protein content and low exoskeleton content (i.e., Araneae) and are likely higher quality prey for insectivores. Abundant orders common in the diets of insectivores, like Hymenoptera and Coleoptera, had high exoskeleton content and low protein content. We also found support for the ability of elements to predict macronutrients and found that metabolizable (i.e., exoskeleton removed) elemental content better predicted macronutrient content. A better understanding of arthropod nutrient content is critical for elucidating the role of spatial and temporal variation in prey communities in shaping the growth and survival of insectivores.  相似文献

Milk reduces post-meal glycemia when consumed either before or within an ad libitum meal. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of each of the macronutrient components and their combination with whole milk on postprandial glycemia, glucoregulatory and gastrointestinal hormones and gastric emptying in healthy young men. In a randomized, crossover study, 12 males consumed beverages (500ml) of whole milk (3.25% M.F.) (control), a simulated milk beverage based on milk macronutrients, complete milk protein (16g), lactose (24g) or milk fat (16g). Whole and simulated milk was similar in lowering postprandial glycemia and slowing gastric emptying while increasing insulin, C-peptide, peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY) and cholecystokinin (CCK), but simulated milk resulted in higher (41%) glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and lower (43%) ghrelin areas under the curve (AUC) than whole milk (P=.01 and P=.04, respectively). Whole and simulated milk lowered glucose (P=.0005) more than predicted by the sum of AUCs for their components. Adjusted for energy content, milks produced lower glucose and hormone responses than predicted from the sum of their components. The effect of protein/kcal on the AUCs was higher than fat/kcal for insulin, C-peptide, insulin secretion rate, GLP-1, CCK and paracetamol (P<.0001), but similar to lactose except for CCK and paracetamol, which were lower. The response in PYY and ghrelin was similar per unit of energy for each macronutrient. In conclusion, milk lowers postprandial glycemia by both insulin and insulin-independent mechanisms arising from interactions among its macronutrient components and energy content.  相似文献

Upon hospital discharge it is not unusual for mothers of preterm infants to continue to meet all or most of their infants' nutritional needs through bottle feedings of expressed breast milk (EBM) because of infants' physiological immaturity and maternal concerns with an inadequacy of milk supply. Although for some mothers the challenge of transitioning the infant to feeding at the breast may be beyond their ability and resources, for others it appears to be based on a conscious choice. Mothers are often unaware of the advantages of breastfeeding at the breast. The purpose of this article is to examine some of the factors that may contribute to the inability and resistance of mothers to transition their preterm infants, and to report on the potential short and long-term advantages associated with feeding at the breast as opposed to feeding bottles of EBM.  相似文献

The influence of osmolality on growth, metabolism, and antibody production of mammalian cells has been widely reported in the past. However, more information about the responses of GS-NS0 Myeloma cells to osmolality, especially regarding the intracellular mass and energy metabolism, has not been available in detail. Fed-batch cultures started at different osmolalities in the range of 280∼370 mOsm/kg were designed to investigate the effects. As the osmolality and cell status changed during the process, cell performance was evaluated in the comparable periods with similar growth rates, nutrition concentrations, and relatively consistent environments. Metabolic flux analysis indicated most of extra consumed glucose at higher osmolalities flowed into lactate formation pathway. The proportion of glucose flux flowed into glycolysis pathway remained approximately 90% and the need of glucose for biomass synthesis was constantly. Also, more than 88% of the glutamine was used in biomass synthesis and the absolute flux remained constant. The specific consumption rate of glutamine declined significantly when cells were cultured in hypo-osmolality (276 mOsm/kg) and a portion of glutamine was synthesized from glutamate. Furthermore, cells were in the state of high energy production at osmolality of 276 mOsm/kg. More glucose flowed into TCA circle with the high efficiency of energy production to meet the demand. Thus, the IVC, the specific antibody production rate, and maximal antibody concentration in fed-batch culture started at 280 mOsm/kg decreased by 35, 36, and 48% compared to those in the culture started at 330 mOsm/kg.  相似文献

Carnivorous animals are known to balance their consumption of lipid and protein, and recent studies indicate that some mammalian carnivores also regulate their intake of carbohydrate. We investigated macronutrient balancing and lipid restoration following hibernation in the ground beetle Anchomenus dorsalis, hypothesizing that carbohydrates might be important energy sources upon hibernation when predator lipid stores are exhausted and prey are equally lean. We recorded the consumption of lipid, protein, and carbohydrate over nine days following hibernation, as the beetles foraged to refill their lipid stores. Each beetle was given the opportunity to regulate consumption from two semi-artificial foods differing in the proportion of two of the three macronutrients, while the third macronutrient was kept constant. When analyzing consumption of the three macronutrients on an energetic basis, it became apparent that the beetles regulated lipid and carbohydrate energy interchangeably and balanced the combined energy intake from the two macronutrients against protein intake. Restoration of lipid stores was independent of the availability of any specific macronutrient. However, the energetic consumption required to refill lipid stores was higher when a low proportion of lipids was ingested, suggesting that lipids were readily converted into lipid stores while there were energetic costs associated with converting carbohydrate and protein into stored lipids. Our experiment demonstrates that carbohydrates are consumed and regulated as a non-protein energy source by A. dorsalis despite an expectedly low occurrence of carbohydrates in their natural diet. Perhaps carbohydrates are in fact an overlooked supplementary energy source in the diet of carnivorous arthropods.  相似文献

To better understand the biophysical basis of osmoprotection by glycine betaine (GB) and the roles of cytoplasmic osmolytes, water, and macromolecular crowding in the growth of osmotically stressed Escherichia coli, we have determined growth rates and amounts of GB, K(+), trehalose, biopolymers, and water in the cytoplasm of E. coli K-12 grown over a wide range of high external osmolalities (1.02-2.17 Osm) in MOPS-buffered minimal medium (MBM) containing 1 mM betaine (MBM+GB). As osmolality increases, we observe that the amount of cytoplasmic GB increases, the amounts of K(+) (the other major cytoplasmic solute) and of biopolymers remain relatively constant, and the growth rate and the amount of cytoplasmic water decrease strongly, so concentrations of biopolymers and all solutes increase with increasing osmolality. We observe the same correlation between the growth rate and the amount of cytoplasmic water for cells grown in MBM+GB as in MBM, supporting our proposal that the amount of cytoplasmic water is a primary determinant of the growth rate of osmotically stressed cells. We also observe the same correlation between cytoplasmic concentrations of biopolymers and K(+) for cells grown in MBM and MBM+GB, consistent with our hypothesis of compensation between the anticipated large perturbing effects on cytoplasmic protein-DNA interactions of increases in cytoplasmic concentrations of K(+) and biopolymers (crowding) with increasing osmolality. For growth conditions where the amount of cytoplasmic water is relatively large, we find that cytoplasmic osmolality is adequately predicted by assuming that contributions of individual solutes to osmolality are additive and using in vitro osmotic data on osmolytes and a local bulk domain model for cytoplasmic water. At moderate growth osmolalities (up to 1 Osm), we conclude that GB is an efficient osmoprotectant because it is almost as excluded from the biopolymer surface in the cytoplasm as it is from native protein surface in vitro. At very high growth osmolalities where cells contain little cytoplasmic water, predicted cytoplasmic osmolalities greatly exceed observed osmolalities, and the efficiency of GB as an osmolality booster decreases as the amount of cytoplasmic water decreases.  相似文献

Phosphorus has been identified as an important determinant of nutrition-related biological variation. The macronutrients protein (P) and carbohydrates (C), both alone and interactively, are known to affect animal performance. No study, however, has investigated the importance of phosphorus relative to dietary protein or carbohydrates, or the interactive effects of phosphorus with these macronutrients, on fitness-related traits in animals. We used a nutritional geometry framework to address this question in adult field crickets (Gryllus veletis). Our results showed that lifespan, weight gain, acoustic mate signalling and egg production were maximized on diets with different P : C ratios, that phosphorus did not positively affect any of these fitness traits, and that males and females had different optimal macronutrient intake ratios for reproductive performance. When given a choice, crickets selected diets that maximized both lifespan and reproductive performance by preferentially eating diets with low P : C ratios, and females selected diets with a higher P : C ratio than males. Conversely, phosphorus intake was not regulated. Overall, our findings highlight the importance of disentangling the influences of different nutrients, and of quantifying both their individual and interactive effects, on animal fitness traits, so as to gain a more integrative understanding of their nutritional ecology.  相似文献

ObjectiveWe investigated the levels and antimicrobial activity of antimicrobial proteins and peptides (AMPs) in breast milk consumed by preterm infants, and whether deficiencies of these factors were associated with late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS), a bacterial infection that frequently occurs in preterm infants in the neonatal period.ResultsLevels of most AMPs and antibacterial activity in preterm breast milk were higher at day 7 than at day 21. Lactoferrin was the only AMP that limited pathogen growth >50% when added to formula at a concentration equivalent to that present in breast milk. Levels of AMPs were similar in the breast milk fed to infants with and without LOS, however, infants who developed LOS consumed significantly less breast milk and lower doses of milk AMPs than those who were free from LOS.ConclusionsThe concentrations of lactoferrin and defensins in preterm breast milk have antimicrobial activity against common neonatal pathogens.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To test whether nutrition early in infants'' development programmes later blood pressure and whether the reported relation between low birth weight and later high blood pressure is due to poor nutrition or growth before full term. DESIGN--Prospective randomisation of preterm infants to early diets differing greatly in nutrient content in four parallel multicentre trials, with blinded follow up 7.5-8 years later. SETTING--Neonatal units at Cambridge, Ipswich, King''s Lynn, Norwich, and Sheffield. SUBJECTS--758 children weighing under 1850 g at birth. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE--Blood pressure at age of 7.5-8 years. RESULTS--There were major differences in nutrient intake from randomised diets (preterm formula v standard formula and preterm formula v donor breast milk; in each case with or without mother''s milk), but follow up showed no differences in later blood pressure. Individual subjects showed large variation in protein and energy intakes and in growth performance, including degrees of growth failure seldom seen in utero, but these factors were also unrelated to later blood pressure. CONCLUSION--Extremes of nutritional intake and growth performance in preterm infants do not programme later blood pressure at 7.5-8 years of age. These findings do not support the hypothesis that high blood pressure has early nutritional origins. We suggest that the long term rise in blood pressure reported in individuals who had low birthweight (at full term) is not, as previously speculated, due to poor fetal nutrition or growth as such.  相似文献

Hyperosmotic stress has been widely explored as a means of improving specific antibody productivity in mammalian cell cultures. In contrast, a decrease in cell-specific productivity of adenovirus production has been reported in several studies in which virus production in HEK 293 cell cultures was conducted under hyperosmotic conditions. However, production of viral vectors and, in particular, adenoviral vectors is the result of two consecutive phases: the growth phase and the virus production phase. In this study, the singular and combined effects of osmolality on the phases of cell growth and virus production were evaluated in culture media with osmolalities ranging from 250 to 410 mOsm. A two-factor, five-level full factorial design was used to investigate the effect of osmotic stress on cell physiology, as determined through the characterization of cell growth, cell metabolism, cell viability, cell cycle, cell RNA and total protein content, and total virus yield/cell-specific virus productivity. Overall, the results show that the growth of cells under hyperosmotic conditions induced favorable physiological states for viral production, and the specific virus productivity was improved by more than 11-fold when the medium's osmolality was increased from 250 to 410 mOsm during the cell growth phase. Both hypo- and hyperosmotic stresses in the virus production phase reduced virus productivity by as much as a factor of six. Optimal virus productivity was achieved by growing cells in media with an osmolality of 370 mOsm or greater, followed by a virus production phase at an osmolality of 290 mOsm. Compared to standard culture and production conditions in isotonic media, the shift from high to low osmolality between the two phases resulted in a two- to three-fold increase in virus yields. This hyperosmotic pressure effect on virus productivity was reproduced in five different commercial serum-free media.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an alternative strategy to the ones proposed before (Oh et al., 1993; Øyaas et al., 1994a) to get real increases of global final antibody titer and production at hyperosmotic stress, by reducing the detrimental effect of such a stress on cell growth, and conserving the stimulating effect on antibody production. It consists of cultivating the cells in continuous culture and increasing the osmolality stepwise. In this way, the cells could progressively adapt to the higher osmolality at each step and antibody titers could be nearly doubled at 370 and 400 mOsm kg-1, compared to the standard osmolality of 335 mOsm kg-1. Surprisingly, the stimulation of antibody production was not confirmed for higher osmolalities, 425 and 450 mOsm kg- 1, despite the minor negative effect on cell growth. Intracellular IgG analysis by flow cytometry revealed at these osmolalities a significant population of non-producing cells. However, even when taking into account this non-producing population, a stimulating effect on antibody production could not be shown at these highest osmolalities. It seems to us that osmolality has a significant effect on the appearance of these non-producing cells, since they were not observed in continuous cultures at standard osmolality, of comparable duration and at an even higher dilution rate. The appearance of the non-producing cells coincides furthermore with modifications of the synthesised antibody, as shown by electrophoretic techniques. It is however not really clear if these two observations reflect actually the same phenomenon. Hyperosmolality affects the cell behaviour in continuous culture in multiple ways, independently of the growth rate, counting all at least partially for the observed stimulation of antibody production: acceleration of the amino acid, and in particular the glutamine metabolism, increase of the cell volume, increase of the intracellular pH and accumulation of cells in the G1 cell cycle phase.  相似文献

The effect of an increase in plasma osmolality on the milk-ejection reflex of rats was studied. The lactating rats, at day 8-12 of lactation, were anesthetized with urethane (1.1 g/kg, i.p.) and 8-11 pups which had been separated from their mother 16-18 h were put to the nipples to suckle. In 21 of 47 rats studied an intermittent pattern of milk ejection was recorded with a latency of 15-74 min (group-I rats). The mean interval between recurring milk ejections was 8.3 +/- 0.6 (S.E.M.) min and the mean amount of oxytocin released at each milk ejection estimated in 11 of them was 0.26 +/- 0.04 mU. The remaining 26 rats showed no milk ejection throughout the nursing period of more than 90 min (group-II rats). The intraperitoneal injection of 1.5 M NaCl (1 ml) had no effect on the interval between milk ejections but increased the amount of oxytocin released at each milk ejection by 2.4 times in group-I rats, as the plasma osmolality changed from 297.9 +/- 2.7 mOsm/kg to 310.4 +/- 3.6 mOsm/kg. On the other hand, the 1.5 M NaCl injection induced recurring reflex milk-ejections in all of the group-II rats, while the plasma osmolality increased from 307 +/- 2.8 mOsm/kg to 320 +/- 3.1 mOsm/kg. The mean interval was not significantly different from that observed in the group-I rats. The sensitivity of the mammary gland to oxytocin was not altered by the 1.5 M NaCl injection. The injection of isotonic NaCl had no effect on the milk-ejection reflex.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

On the basis of the circadian nutritional variations present in breast milk, and of the implications for the sleep/wake cycle of the nutrients present in infant formula milks, we designed a formula milk nutritionally dissociated into a Day/Night composition. The goal was to improve the bottle-fed infant's sleep/wake circadian rhythm. A total of 21 infants aged 4-20 weeks with sleeping difficulties were enrolled in the three-week duration study. The sleep analysis was performed using an actimeter (Actiwatch) placed on an ankle of each infant to uninterruptedly record movements during the three weeks. The dissociated Day milk, designed to be administered from 06:00 to 18:00, contained low levels of tryptophan (1.5g/100g protein) and carbohydrates, high levels of proteins, and the nucleotides Cytidine 5 monophosphate, Guanosine 5 monophosphate and Inosine 5 monophosphate. The dissociated Night milk, designed to be administered from 18.00 to 06.00, contained high levels of tryptophan (3.4g/100g protein) and carbohydrates, low levels of protein, and the nucleotides Adenosine 5 monophosphate and Uridine 5 monophosphate. Three different milk-feeding experiments were performed in a double-blind procedure covering three weeks. In week 1 (control), the infants received both by day and by night a standard formula milk; in week 2 (inverse control), they received the dissociated milk inversely (Night/Day instead of Day/Night); and in week 3, they received the Day/Night dissociated formula concordant with the formula design. When the infants were receiving the Day/Night dissociated milk in concordance with their environment, they showed improvement in all the nocturnal sleep parameters analyzed: total hours of sleep, sleep efficiency, minutes of nocturnal immobility, nocturnal awakenings, and sleep latency. In conclusion, the use of a chronobiologically adjusted infant formula milk seems to be effective in improving the consolidation of the circadian sleep/wake cycle in bottle-fed infants.  相似文献

The optimization of cryopreservation extenders is a fundamental issue for adequately performing germplasm banking on wild species. We have tested two glycerol concentrations (4 and 8%), and three extender osmolalities (320, 380 and 430 mOsm/kg; before adding cryoprotectants), for cryopreservation of epididymal and ejaculated sperm samples from Iberian red deer. All the extenders were based on Tes-Tris and fructose (for osmolality adjustment), and complemented with 20% egg yolk. Epididymal and ejaculated sperm samples were obtained from the cauda epididymis (post-mortem) and using electroejaculation, respectively. Samples were diluted 1:1 with each extender and equilibrated for 2 h at 5 degrees C. Then, they were diluted down to 100x10(6) sperm/mL and frozen at -20 degrees C/min. Post-thawed samples were assessed for motility (CASA), HOS test, proportion of swollen (osmotically challenged) cells in the untreated sample, viability and acrosomal status. For epididymal samples, 8% glycerol rendered a slightly higher proportion of intact acrosomes on viable spermatozoa than 4%; regarding extender osmolality, 380 and 430 mOsm/kg rendered higher motility results, and the 430 mOsm/kg yielded the lowest proportion of swollen spermatozoa. For ejaculated samples, 4% glycerol yielded more viable spermatozoa than 8%; for extender osmolality, 320 mOsm/kg rendered the highest percentages of progressively motile and viable spermatozoa, although 380 mOsm/kg extender was not significantly different. These results show that sample source influences extender suitability, and that extenders should be isoosmotic or rather slightly hyperosmotic. Future studies should test multiple glycerol concentrations and extender osmolalities in order to adjust them to these kinds of sample.  相似文献

Fundamental knowledge of spermatozoa cryobiology can assist with optimizing cryopreservation protocols needed for genetic management of the endangered black-footed ferret. Objectives were to characterize semen osmolality and assess the influence of two media at various osmolalities on sperm viability. We examined the influence of Ham's F10 +Hepes medium (H) at 270, 400, 500 or 700 mOsm (adjusted with sucrose, a nonpermeating cryoprotectant) and TEST Yolk Buffer (TYB) with 0% (300 mOsm) versus 4% (900 mOsm) glycerol (a permeating cryoprotectant). Electroejaculates (n=16) were assessed for osmolality using a vapor pressure osmometer. For media comparison, semen (n=5) was collected in TYB 0%, split into six aliquots, and diluted in H270, H400, H500, H700, and TYB 0% or TYB 4%. Each sample was centrifuged (300 g, 8 min), resuspended in respective medium, and maintained at 37 degrees C for 3h. Sperm motility and forward progression were monitored every 30 min for 3h post-washing. Acrosomal integrity was monitored at 0 and 60 min post-washing. Results demonstrated that black-footed ferret semen has a comparatively high osmolality (mean+/-SEM, 513.1+/-32.6 mOsm; range, 366-791 mOsm). Ferret spermatozoa were sensitive to hyperosmotic stress. Specifically, sperm motility was more susceptible (P<0.01) to hyperosmotic conditions than acrosomal integrity, and neither were influenced (P>0.05) by hypotonic solutions. Exposure to TYB 4% glycerol retained more (P<0.01) sperm motility than a hyperosmotic Ham's (700 mOsm). These findings will guide the eventual development of assisted breeding with cryopreserved sperm contributing to genetic management of this rare species.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo the assess the iodine status of preterm infants born in an area of iodine sufficiency using the urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and compare these values across different feeding practices during the first 7 days of life.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 88 preterm infants born at 30 to 34 weeks of gestation and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of a referral hospital in Tehran (Iran) were included. The infant UIC and TSH levels and breast milk iodine concentration in mothers who were exclusively breastfeeding were measured.ResultsMedian (interquartile range [IQR]) UIC and TSH levels in the study population were 81 (39-189) μg/L and 1.60 (0.80-2.85) mIU/L, respectively. When preterm infants were stratified by the type of feeding, the median (IQR) UICs were 64 (42-126) μg/L in parenteral nutrition, 125 (41-195) μg/L in exclusively breastfeeding, 57 (28-123) μg/L in formula feeding, and 45 (35-132) μg/L in mixed feeding, with no statistically significant difference between the groups (P = .31). The median (IQR) breast milk iodine concentration was 271 (177-521) μg/L in preterm infants exclusively fed their mothers’ own milk. There was no significant difference in the proportion of the TSH levels of >5 mIU/L between preterm infants who received enteral and parenteral nutrition (P = .27).ConclusionPreterm infants are at risk of iodine deficiency even in an area where the general population has adequate iodine. Only the preterm infants who received exclusively their mothers’ own milk had marginally adequate iodine status. Further studies are warranted to determine the necessity of iodine supplementation for this vulnerable group.  相似文献

The use of chemically defined artificial diets has allowed researchers to examine questions within nutritional ecology about how macronutrients affect life‐history traits and resource‐based trade‐offs. Using a chemically defined diet, it is possible to manipulate both the total nutritional content and the ratio of macronutrients (i.e., proteins, carbohydrates, or lipids) within the diet. Studies using the geometric framework have made use of these diets to examine lifespan, fecundity, and immune responses. Here, we develop an artificial diet suitable for rearing lepidopteran larvae. We created diets with three proportions of non‐nutritive material (30, 50, and 70% indigestible cellulose) relative to protein and carbohydrate macronutrients, and compared these to standard wheat bran laboratory diet. We then examined the effects of variable nutrient content on lifespan and development time in Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The artificial diets supported development (almost) as well as bran‐based laboratory diets. Total nutrient content affected development time: females that fed on the diet with the highest nutrient content took the longest time to reach eclosion. We also found evidence to support dietary restriction, with larvae receiving the fewest nutrients having the longest lifespan as adults. These findings are indicative of the usefulness of this diet as a tool to further investigate the effects of nutrient content and macronutrient imbalance on resource‐based trade‐offs and life‐history traits.  相似文献

Reevaluation of the DHA requirement for the premature infant   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) intake in preterm infants is crucial for normal central nervous system development and has the potential for long-lasting effects that extend beyond the period of dietary insufficiency. While much attention has focused on improving their nutritional intake, many premature infants do not receive an adequate DHA supply. We demonstrate that enterally fed premature infants exhibit daily DHA deficit of 20 mg/kg.d, representing 44% of the DHA that should have been accumulated. Furthermore, the DHA content of human milk and current preterm formulas cannot compensate for an early DHA deficit which may occur during the first month of life. We recommend breast-feeding, which supplies preformed LC-PUFA, as the preferred method of feeding for preterm infants. However, to fulfill the specific DHA requirement of these infants, we recommend increasing the DHA content of human milk either by providing the mothers with a DHA supplement or by adding DHA directly to the milk. Increasing the DHA content above 1% total fatty acids appears to be safe and may enhance neurological development particularly that of infants with a birth weight below 1250 g. We estimate that human milk and preterm formula should contain 1.5% of fatty acid as DHA to prevent the appearance of a DHA deficit and to compensate for the early DHA deficit.  相似文献
