In this study, the antimicrobial activity of the acetone, diethyl ether and ethanol extracts of the lichen Cetraria aculeata has been investigated. The extracts were tested against twelve bacteria and eight fungi and found active against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes. No antimicrobial activity against the fungi was detected. It was determined that only one substance in the extracts has antimicrobial activity and it was characterized as protolichesterinic acid. The MICs of the extracts and protolichesterinic acid were also determined. 相似文献

The antimicrobial activity of the acetone, chloroform, diethyl ether, methanol, and petroleum ether extracts of the lichen Parmelia sulcata and its salazinic acid constituent have been screened against twenty eight food-borne bacteria and fungi. All of the extracts with the exception of the petroleum ether extract showed antimicrobial activity against Aeromonas hydrophila, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Yersinia enterocolitica, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Penicillium notatum. Salazinic acid did not show antimicrobial activity against L. monocytogenes, P. vulgaris, Y. enterocolitica, and S. faecalis but showed activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium as well. The MIC values of the extracts and the acid for the bacteria and fungi have also been determined. 相似文献

Acetone extracts of the threelichen species Evernia prunastri, Hypogymnia physodes and Cladoniaportentosa were investigated for activityagainst eight plant pathogenic fungi: Pythium ultimum, Phytophthorainfestans, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichumlindemuthianum, Fusarium solani, Stagonospora nodorum and Ustilagomaydis. Particularly, E. prunastriand H. physodes exhibit total or stronginhibition on P. ultimum, U.maydis and P. infestans growth. Incontrast, Cladonia extracts were lessactive to reduce growth of these fungi.Lichenic acids were also examined forantifungal activity. P. infestans growthwas severely inhibited by evernic acid. P.ultimum and P. infestans growth wereslightly but significantly inhibited by evernicacid and (–) usnic acid, respectively. Growthinhibition of U. maydis was also observedfor the latter lichenic acid. These resultsconfirm the previously observed activities oflichen extracts. This suggests that secondarylichen metabolites might be of potential use asantifungal agents. 相似文献

Structure analysis based on regular morphological variability at organism level is applied to study the shape and spatial construction of lichen Hypogymnia phyzodes (L.) Nyl. Some structural were determined at juvenile stage of development with the use of this approach. Five of them are dominant. Besides, five the most frequent encounter types of thallus branching were described. It is shown that thallus structure at adult stage is usually built from two main elements forming axial dichotomy. Analysis of thallus shape indicates that transformation of dichotomy elements into trichotomy ones may also take place during growth and development of thallus. 相似文献

The aim of the research is to explore the overall in vitro antioxidant activity, total phenol content, reduction power and
antimicrobial activity of the methanol extracts of the lichens Cetraria pinastri, Cladonia digitata, Cladonia fimbriata, Fulgensia fulgens, Ochrolechia parella and Parmelia crinita. The methanol extract of the Cetraria pinastri showed a strong antioxidant activity, whereas the extracts of the species Fulgenesi fulgens, Cladonia fimbriata and Parmelia crinita showed the moderate one and the extract of the species Ochrolechia parella and Cladonia digitata the weak one. The methanol extract of the lichen Cetraria pinastri had the biggest total phenol content (32.9 mg/g of the dry extract). A certain correlation was established between the antioxidant
activity and the total phenol content for the researched lichen extracts. The work also explores the antimicrobial activity
of the methanol extracts of the mentioned species of lichens against six bacterial and eleven fungi species by the disc-diffusion
method and by establishing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The methanol extracts of the lichens Cetraria pinastri and Parmelia crinita showed the strongest both antibacterial and antifungal activity against most of the tested microorganisms. These researches
suggest that the lichens Cetraria prunastri can be used as new sources of the natural antioxidants and the substances with antimicrobial features. 相似文献

The acetone extract of the lichen Ramalina farinacea and its (+)-usnic acid constituent showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Yersinia enterocolitica, Candida albicans, and Candida glabrata. Norstictic acid was active against Aeromonas hydrophila as well as the above microorganisms except Yersinia enterocolitica. Protocetraric acid showed activity only against the tested yeasts Candida albicans and Candida glabrata. The MIC values of the extract as well as of the three substances were determined. No antifungal activity of the acetone extract has been observed against ten filamentous fungi. 相似文献

Six species of lichens, such as Usnea florida, Usnea barbata, Usnea longissima, Usnea rigida, Usnea hirta and Usnea subflorida, were collected from different areas of Anatolia (district of Antalya, Karabük, Qankiri, Giresun and Trabzon) in Turkey. Their usnic acid amounts in acetone extracts were determined by HPLC. In addition, antimicrobial activities of these extracts were determined against Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218), Enterococcus faecalis (RSKK 508), Proteus mirabilis (Pasteur Ens. 235), Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus megaterium. It was shown that with increasing amount of usnic acid, the antimicrobial activity increased. Usnic acid contents of Usnea species varied between 0.22-6.49% of dry weight. 相似文献

In this study, in vitro antimicrobial activity of the physodic acid, usnic acid, atranorin and gyrophoric acid isolated from
the lichens Hypogymnia physodes, Parmelia caperata, Physcia aipolia and Umbilicaria polyphylla, has been investigated. An antibiotic assessment was done against six bacteria (three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative)
and eight fungi by determining the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) by the broth tube dilution method. The tested lichen
substances inhibited growth of all the tested microorganisms. The bacteria showed a higher sensitivity against the tested
fungi. The highest antimicrobial activity was found in the usnic acid of the Parmelia caperata lichen, where the lowest MIC was 0.0037 mg/ml against the Klebsiella pneumoniae (even lower than the one given by the streptomycin standard). The weakest antimicrobial activity was found in the physodic
acid, which inhibited most of the microorganisms in the concentration of 1 mg/ml. Generally, all the components had relatively
strong antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms, among which were human and animal pathogens. This could be
of significance for their use for pharmaceutical purposes. 相似文献

Secondary compounds were quantified in 75 thalli of the foliose lichen Hypogymnia physodes collected in habitats along a natural shade-sun gradient from dark spruce forests to sun-exposed sea cliffs. The irradiance in all the 75 lichen sites was estimated from hemispherical photographs. The content of lichen compounds per thallus area correlated positively with irradiance level (r2=0.73), and the mean concentration increased from 6.7% in the spruce forest to 14.4% on sea cliffs. The medullary depsidones, physodic, physodalic and protocetraric acids, constituted >95% of the total pool of extractable secondary compounds, the cortical depsides, atranorin and chloratranorin, represented <5%. Both cortical compounds correlated well with direct and with diffuse radiation, whereas the three medullary compounds correlated better with diffuse than with direct radiation. Mentioned trends are consistent with a solar radiation screening hypothesis of both groups of these colourless compounds occuring as tiny crystals outside fungal hyphae. However, the UV-B protective hypothesis of the compounds was further tested in a lab experiment. Unnaturally high UV-B doses were required to significantly reduce the PSII efficiency (FV/FM) of symbiotic algae. Removal of the major pool of secondary compounds with acetone did not increase photobiont susceptibility to UV-B. Therefore, the main functional role of the UV-B absorbing secondary compounds in H. physodes is hardly UV-B screening. Other roles such as PAR-screening and defence against herbivores and pathogenic organisms are discussed. 相似文献

The antimicrobial activity and the MIC values of the ethanol, chloroform, diethyl ether, and acetone extracts of the chemical races of Pseudevernia furfuracea (var. furfuracea and var. ceratea) and their physodic acid, chloroatranorin, atranorin, and olivetoric acid constituents have been investigated against some microorganisms. Nearly all extracts of both chemical races showed antimicrobial activity against Aeromonas hydrophila, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Yersinia enterocolitica, Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Alternaria alternata, Ascochyta rabiei, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, and Penicillium notatum. There was no antimicrobial activity of the extracts against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas syringae, Salmonella typhimurium, Alternaria citri, Alternaria tenuissima, and Gaeumannomyces graminis. Chloroatranorin and olivetoric acid were active against the same microorganisms with few exceptions. Physodic acid was active against about the same bacteria and yeasts and inactive against all of the filamentous fungi tested. Also no activity of atranorin against the filamentous fungi was observed. 相似文献

The mucus layer on the surface of fish consists of several antimicrobial agents that provide a first line of defense against invading pathogens. To date, little is known about the antimicrobial properties of the mucus of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), brook trout (S. fontinalis), koi carp (Cyprinus carpio sub sp. koi), striped bass (Morone saxatilis), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and hagfish (Myxine glutinosa). The epidermal mucus samples from these fish were extracted with acidic, organic and aqueous solvents to identify potential antimicrobial agents including basic peptides, secondary metabolites, aqueous and acid soluble compounds. Initial screening of the mucus extracts against a susceptible strain of Salmonella enterica C610, showed a significant variation in antimicrobial activity among the fish species examined. The acidic mucus extracts of brook trout, haddock and hagfish exhibited bactericidal activity. The organic mucus extracts of brook trout, striped bass and koi carp showed bacteriostatic activity. There was no detectable activity in the aqueous mucus extracts. Further investigations of the activity of the acidic mucus extracts of brook trout, haddock and hagfish showed that these fish species had specific activity for fish and human pathogens, demonstrating the role of fish mucus in antimicrobial protection. In comparison to brook trout and haddock, the minimum bactericidal concentrations of hagfish acidic mucus extracts were found to be approximately 1.5 to 3.0 times lower against fish pathogens and approximately 1.6 to 6.6 folds lower for human pathogens. This preliminary information suggests that the mucus from these fish species may be a source of novel antimicrobial agents for fish and human health related applications. 相似文献

Eight lichens were extracted successively with n-hexane, diethyl ether and methanol using a Soxhlet process. The cytotoxic activity of the 24 lichen extracts was evaluated in vitro using two murine (the L1210: lymphocytic leukaemia, and the 3LL: Lewis lung carcinoma) and four human (the K-562: chronic myelogenous leukaemia, the U251: glioblastoma, the DU145: prostate carcinoma, and the MCF7: breast adenocarcinoma) cancer cell lines and non-cancerous cells, the Vero cell line (African green monkey kidney cell line). The MTT assay revealed significant cytotoxicity (IC50 < or = 20 microg/ml) on one of the tested cancer cell lines for at least one extract of each lichen species. Some extracts of Cladonia convoluta, Cladonia rangiformis, Parmelia caperata, Platismatia glauca and Ramalina cuspidata demonstrated interesting activities particularly on human cancer cell lines as good selectivity indices were recorded (SI > 3). 相似文献

It is proposed to determine the antimicrobial activity of propolys alcohol extracts by the method of subsequent dilutions in solid nutrient media. Dilution of the extracts immediately in hot agar eliminated the inhibiting effect of the extragent on the microbial growth. Opalesence appearing in the agar did not prevent estimation of the results in contrast to the method of subsequent dilutions in liquid nutrient media. 相似文献

Lapachol was chemically modified to obtain its thiosemicarbazone and semicarbazone derivatives. These compounds were tested for antimicrobial activity against several bacteria and fungi by the broth microdilution method. The thiosemicarbazone and semicarbazone derivatives of lapachol exhibited antimicrobial activity against the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 0.05 and 0.10 µmol/mL, respectively. The thiosemicarbazone and semicarbazone derivatives were also active against the pathogenic yeast Cryptococcus gattii (MICs of 0.10 and 0.20 µmol/mL, respectively). In addition, the lapachol thiosemicarbazone derivative was active against 11 clinical isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, with MICs ranging from 0.01-0.10 µmol/mL. The lapachol-derived thiosemicarbazone was not cytotoxic to normal cells at the concentrations that were active against fungi and bacteria. We synthesised, for the first time, thiosemicarbazone and semicarbazone derivatives of lapachol. The MICs for the lapachol-derived thiosemicarbazone against S. aureus, E. faecalis, C. gattii and several isolates of P. brasiliensis indicated that this compound has the potential to be developed into novel drugs to treat infections caused these microbes. 相似文献

The lichen Hypogymnia physodes was sampled from spruce trunks and we used to assess natural elements in the throughfall from pairs of neighbouring beech (Fagus sylvatica) and spruce (Picea abies) canopies in an unmanaged forest reserve. The beech bark (pH = 4.36 ± 0.13) was less acidic than spruce bark (3.71 ± 0.06). After a 1 yr transplantation onto trunks, lichens on beech had significantly higher concentrations of Ca, K, Mg and P than on spruce, and lower Mn, Zn and C, but had similar Al, B, Fe, N, Na, S and Si concentrations. Base cations (Ca, Mg, K) in lichens highly significantly increased with bark pH, with no overlap between tree species neither for base cations, nor for pH. The results are consistent with the view that trees modify the elemental composition of lichens in their dripzone, and that trees at least to some extent can modify the elemental chemistry of their local surroundings and thus influence ecosystem processes. We discuss lichen transplantation as a method to estimate long-term effects of tree species on local chemical environments. 相似文献

The continuing threat of antimicrobial resistance presents a considerable challenge to researchers to develop novel strategies ensuring that bacterial infections remain treatable. Many plant extracts have been shown to have antibacterial properties and could potentially be combined with other antibacterial agents to create more effective formulations. In this study, the antibacterial activity of three plant extracts and virulent bacteriophages have been assessed as individual components and in combination. When assessed with a modified suspension test, these plant extracts also exhibit antiviral activity at bacterial inhibitory concentrations. Hence, to investigate any potential additive effects between the extracts and virulent phages, the extracts were tested at subantiviral concentrations. Phages alone and in combination with plant extracts significantly reduced (P < 0·05) the bacterial concentration compared to untreated and extract treated controls up to 6 h (2–3log10), but this reduction did not extend to 24 h. In most cases, the phage and extract combinations did not significantly reduce bacterial content compared to phages alone. Additionally, there was little impact on the ability of the phages to reproduce within their bacterial hosts. To our knowledge, this study represents the first of its kind, in which antimicrobial plant extracts have been combined with virulent phages and has highlighted the necessity for plant extracts to be functionally characterized prior to the design of combinatorial therapies.
