Using a modification of the computer period analysis of the EEG (Aladjov and Daskalova 1987) we studied the late after-effects (until the 30th min) in human EEG (monopolar leads at F1, C3, P3 and 01) following two kinds of influences: a) short interoceptive one: 3 min hyperventilation (HV) and b) a series of 5 trains of visual light flashes (VS), presented in 5-7 min intervals. The changes in the ongoing EEG in the 2nd min after each VS and in intervals of 5 min after HV were compared with the values before the stimulation. VS did not elicit long-lasting EEG after-effects, which characterized the single interoceptive influence (HV) and consisted mainly of beta-2 (24-36 Hz) EEG activity increase in all studied cortical regions (Nikolov and Kisselkova 1988). Moreover, the exteroceptive stimulation (VS) had no essential influence on the late EEG after-effects after HV, when both kinds of stimulation were applied in the same experiment.  相似文献

The late EEG after-effects following application of a short-lasting ventilatory interoceptive influence (3 min hyperventilation-HV) were studied in humans with three degrees of adaptation: students (ST) with a lower degree of training, professional alpine climbers with a high level of training (AL1) and the same subjects (AL2) in a middle position of adaptation i.e. 6 months after an expedition. ST developed late EEG after-effects, consisting mainly in an increase of the beta-2 EEG activity; AL1 showed very slight changes, while in AL2 the EEG after-effects were intermediate. It is suggested, that a lower level of adaptation facilitates the triggering through HV of processes in the cortical EEG which accompany an improvement of the brain tone.  相似文献

In the 8-d flight mission of Spacelab-J (STS-47) conducted in 1992, behavior of the dorsal light response (DLR) and EEG activity of the cerebellum were intermittently examined for two carp, normal and otolith-removed. The latter carp had immobilization trouble caused by twisting of the EEG cable on day 2 inflight. The problem continued for the remainder of the experiment. Analyses made on the normal carp provided additional evidence in fish for sensory-motor disorder and readjustment during early phase of microgravity, thus supporting the sensory conflict hypothesis for space motion sickness. In the present report, why and how this space experiment was conducted were reviewed with a brief summary of the results.  相似文献

The perception of time is a fundamental part of human experience. Recent research suggests that the experience of time emerges from emotional and interoceptive (bodily) states as processed in the insular cortex. Whether there is an interaction between the conscious awareness of interoceptive states and time distortions induced by emotions has rarely been investigated so far. We aimed to address this question by the use of a retrospective time estimation task comparing two groups of participants. One group had a focus on interoceptive states and one had a focus on exteroceptive information while watching film clips depicting fear, amusement and neutral content. Main results were that attention to interoceptive processes significantly affected subjective time experience. Fear was accompanied with subjective time dilation that was more pronounced in the group with interoceptive focus, while amusement led to a quicker passage of time which was also increased by interoceptive focus. We conclude that retrospective temporal distortions are directly influenced by attention to bodily responses. These effects might crucially interact with arousal levels. Sympathetic nervous system activation affecting memory build-up might be the decisive factor influencing retrospective time judgments. Our data substantially extend former research findings underscoring the relevance of interoception for the effects of emotional states on subjective time experience.  相似文献

Multiparametric comparative analysis of spatial organization of EEG was carried out in 137 alcoholics and 131 heroin addicts. Common and different deviations from normal EEG (105 control subjects) were found. Global alterations of EEG spatial organization were observed in drug addicts (as compared to alcoholics). Such changes characterized increasing synchronizing effects of mesolimbic and brainstem structures on the brain cortex. The ethanol effects were more specific and asymmetric. Changes in EEG spectral-coherence characteristics were revealed in all frequency band, however, maximal changes took place in the high-frequency theta in drug addicts and in narrow-frequency alpha subranges in alcoholics. Different effects on the high-frequency EEG component (19.00-21.25 Hz) and information-energy index (coherence-to-spectral power ratio) suggest the difference influence of ethanol and heroin on emotional-motivational and cognitive processes as well as the level of consciousness. The obtained data on EEG discrimination of alcoholism and drug addiction (the inverse problem solution) on the basis of "specific" EEG patterns appear to have considerable promise in development of systems of occupational selection.  相似文献

Summary The process of volume readjustment following swelling after transfer to dilute sea water was examined in the estuarine polychaeteNereis succinea by measuring body weight changes. Volume readjustment is an active process that requires O2 and uninhibited cellular metabolism, and the process is retarded at low temperature. O2 uptake increases during the swelling phase and remains high throughout the readjustment phase. The intracellular osmolytes lost during volume readjustment include free amino acids, some of which appear to be deaminated and some extruded intact into the medium. Although it is known that intracellular inorganic ions, including Na+ and Cl, are lost into the extracellular fluid against a concentration gradient, volume regulation in an intact animal is insensitive to a number of drugs that influence ion movements at the cellular level.Two possible mechanisms of extracellular fluid readjustment implicated by previous findings have been eliminated. The increased urine flow known to accompany volume readjustment is not brought about by increased hydrostatic pressure in the coelom. In fact, coelomic fluid pressure decreases, which is consistent with the hypothesis that extracellular volume readjustment is accomplished by enhanced ciliary activity in the nephridia. Brain computer interface (BCI) is an assistive technology, which decodes neurophysiological signals generated by the human brain and translates them into control signals to control external devices, e.g., wheelchairs. One problem challenging noninvasive BCI technologies is the limited control dimensions from decoding movements of, mainly, large body parts, e.g., upper and lower limbs. It has been reported that complicated dexterous functions, i.e., finger movements, can be decoded in electrocorticography (ECoG) signals, while it remains unclear whether noninvasive electroencephalography (EEG) signals also have sufficient information to decode the same type of movements. Phenomena of broadband power increase and low-frequency-band power decrease were observed in EEG in the present study, when EEG power spectra were decomposed by a principal component analysis (PCA). These movement-related spectral structures and their changes caused by finger movements in EEG are consistent with observations in previous ECoG study, as well as the results from ECoG data in the present study. The average decoding accuracy of 77.11% over all subjects was obtained in classifying each pair of fingers from one hand using movement-related spectral changes as features to be decoded using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The average decoding accuracy in three epilepsy patients using ECoG data was 91.28% with the similarly obtained features and same classifier. Both decoding accuracies of EEG and ECoG are significantly higher than the empirical guessing level (51.26%) in all subjects (p<0.05). The present study suggests the similar movement-related spectral changes in EEG as in ECoG, and demonstrates the feasibility of discriminating finger movements from one hand using EEG. These findings are promising to facilitate the development of BCIs with rich control signals using noninvasive technologies.  相似文献

The process by which the brain transitions into an epileptic seizure is unknown. In this study, we investigated whether the transition to seizure is associated with changes in brain dynamics detectable in the wideband EEG, and whether differences exist across underlying pathologies. Depth electrode ictal EEG recordings from 40 consecutive patients with pharmacoresistant lesional focal epilepsy were low-pass filtered at 500 Hz and sampled at 2,000 Hz. Predefined EEG sections were selected immediately before (immediate preictal), and 30 seconds before the earliest EEG sign suggestive of seizure activity (baseline). Spectral analysis, visual inspection and discrete wavelet transform were used to detect standard (delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma) and high-frequency bands (ripples and fast ripples). At the group level, each EEG frequency band activity increased significantly from baseline to the immediate preictal section, mostly in a progressive manner and independently of any modification in the state of vigilance. Preictal increases in each frequency band activity were widespread, being observed in the seizure-onset zone and lesional tissue, as well as in remote regions. These changes occurred in all the investigated pathologies (mesial temporal atrophy/sclerosis, local/regional cortical atrophy, and malformations of cortical development), but were more pronounced in mesial temporal atrophy/sclerosis. Our findings indicate that a brain state change with distinctive features, in the form of unidirectional changes across the entire EEG bandwidth, occurs immediately prior to seizure onset. We postulate that these changes might reflect a facilitating state of the brain which enables a susceptible region to generate seizures.  相似文献

A highly purified preparation of staphylococcal enterotoxin B was administered intravenously, 1 mg/kg, to rhesus monkeys. Electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorded from electrodes attached to the skin or implanted on the dura. The dose of toxin employed consistently produced a sequence of vascular collapse followed by death; in control studies, animals were bled periodically to produce a similar pattern of shock. Regardless of the time to death following administration of the enterotoxin, there were essentially no changes from base line EEG patterns until shortly before death. With the development of preterminal severe shock, there was a marked decrease in EEG wave frequency and an initial increase in amplitude. The latter diminished progressively to produce an isoelectric tracing immediately prior to death. This could be reversed for a brief period by epinephrine. An identical sequence of EEG changes was observed during the terminal period of hemorrhagic shock. It is postulated that cerebral anoxia, caused by inadequate blood flow, is the primary cause of the altered EEG patterns that accompany enterotoxin toxicity. In this respect, staphylococcal enterotoxin B produces changes apparently similar to bacterial endotoxin but distinctly different from the EEG effects reported after botulinum toxin, anthrax toxin, or rattlesnake and cobra venom.  相似文献

Body-awareness relies on the representation of both interoceptive and exteroceptive percepts coming from one's body. However, the exact relationship and possible interaction of interoceptive and exteroceptive systems for body-awareness remain unknown. We sought to understand for the first time, to our knowledge, the interaction between interoceptive and exteroceptive awareness of the body. First, we measured interoceptive awareness with an established heartbeat monitoring task. We, then, used a multi-sensory-induced manipulation of body-ownership (e.g. Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI)) and we quantified the extent to which participants experienced ownership over a foreign body-part using behavioural, physiological and introspective measures. The results suggest that interoceptive sensitivity predicts the malleability of body representations, that is, people with low interoceptive sensitivity experienced a stronger illusion of ownership in the RHI. Importantly, this effect was not simply owing to a poor proprioceptive representation or differences in autonomic states of one's body prior to the multi-sensory stimulation, suggesting that interoceptive awareness modulates the online integration of multi-sensory body-percepts.  相似文献

By the method of factor analysis characteristics of functional brain states in children and juveniles of different age with neuroses were studied by EEG data. Similarity was established of the patients EEG structure at strained and emotional states. In the studied period of individual development (7-14 years) the most expressed changes of background EEG were observed at the age og 9-12 years. At functional loads, beginning from the age of 9-10, insufficient activity of the frontal region of the left hemisphere was found. The greatest changes of the EEG integral characteristics were observed in patients with vegetative-emotional disturbances and the smallest-at verbal-motor ones.  相似文献

River impoundment is known to affect the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the downstream river, but little is known of the way in which changes of these characteristics interact or the time-scale required to attain a new quasi-equilibrium state. The data presented herein show that channel sedimentation below a tributary confluence, resulting from reduced flow competence and capacity within the regulated mainstream, has produced morphological changes associated with substrate particle-size alteration. Four physical compartments are identified, each representing a different stage of readjustment to the hydrological conditions imposed by the dam. Each stage is shown to have a characteristic fauna. Moreover, the species diversity, composition, and biomass were found to be most different from the natural data during the early stages of readjustment and to approach the natural data more closely as the channel attained a quasi-equilibrium form.  相似文献

In researches with participation of volunteers bioeffects of short-term non-thermal radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF EMF) exposure were studied. The basic form of brain's reaction was the amplification of energy in a-range in electroencephalogram (EEG) spectra. Dependence of these changes, not only due to the changes of the exposure parameters, but also due to personal EEG typological features was shown. Moderate degree of the alpha frequencies domination in the background promoted development of reaction of a brain to the RF EMF exposure. To a lesser degree it was shown at hyperactivity of this range and, practically, was absent in the conditions of theta- or beta2-range domination in the EEG background with the open and closed eyes. The combination of RF EMF exposure and monotonous activity has authentically strengthened result, keeping the basic form of reaction (energy amplification in the alpha range of EEG spectrum) and dependence on EEG typological features.  相似文献

Study of electroencephalographic (EEG) correlates of psychological processes is becoming an increasingly popular subject, and scientists are gradually abandoning the notion that EEG parameters contain no useful information about the activity in which the subject is engaged. The search for various EEG indices reflecting the characteristics of the work being performed by a subject is being pursued with increasing vigor. The hypothesis behind these studies is that as a person goes about performing some activity, specific changes in neurodynamics take place in various locations in the cerebral cortex and that these changes will be reflected in the corresponding EEG indices. Furthermore, these EEG changes will persist as long as the subject continues what he is doing, but will be especially intense at critical moments during that activity: during the first stages, at moments preceding or accompanying the discovery of an algorithm for solving the given problem, when wrong responses are given, etc.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that the interoceptive nicotine conditional stimulus (CS) functions similarly to exteroceptive CSs such as lights or environments. For instance, the appetitive conditioned response (CR) evoked when nicotine is repeatedly paired with sucrose presentations (the unconditioned stimulus; US) is sensitive to changes in training dose (CS salience) and the contiguity between the CS effects and sucrose. The current study was conducted to extend this research by examining the possible role of US intensity in CR acquisition and maintenance. Rats were trained using one of four sucrose concentrations: 0, 4, 16, or 32% (w/v). On nicotine sessions (0.4 mg base/kg), rats received 36 deliveries (4 s each) of their assigned concentration intermittently throughout the session; sucrose was withheld on saline sessions. In all groups, an appetitive goal-tracking CR was acquired at a similar rate. However, the asymptotic CR level varied with sucrose concentration. The magnitude of the CR was increased in rats trained with higher sucrose US concentrations. These findings are consistent with previous Pavlovian conditioning research, and extend the conditions under which the nicotine state functions as an interoceptive conditional stimulus.  相似文献

The dynamic pattern of a prestimulus EEG was studied by the fractal analysis technique. The character of this pattern was shown to affect the structure of cortical auditory evoked potentials (EP). A monoperiodic pattern in the control frequency band was accompanied by a formation of several new attractors with low dimensionality attributed to simultaneous functioning of several weakly connected dynamic systems with an indefinite trend of a leading process. During development of multiperiodic processes in EEG segments, the fractal analysis revealed a tendency for a formation of a single complex dynamic system with high dimensionality of the attractor. Characteristic changes in parameters of the primary and middle-latency EP components, their correlation, and factor models are related with the character of nonlinear patterns. Analysis of variance revealed the most effective role of pattern changes in the EEG alpha control band. The structure of combination of parameters of the EP primary components into connected complexes depends on the nonlinear prestimulus EEG patterns. The above predictors determine differently directed and differently pronounced changes in parameters of the middle-latency positive waves.  相似文献

Background

‘Self-objectification’ is the tendency to experience one''s body principally as an object, to be evaluated for its appearance rather than for its effectiveness. Within objectification theory, it has been proposed that self-objectification accounts for the poorer interoceptive awareness observed in women, as measured by heartbeat perception. Our study is, we believe, the first specifically to test this relationship.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Using a well-validated and reliable heartbeat perception task, we measured interoceptive awareness in women and compared this with their scores on the Self-Objectification Questionnaire, the Self-Consciousness Scale and the Body Consciousness Questionnaire. Interoceptive awareness was negatively correlated with self-objectification. Interoceptive awareness, public body consciousness and private body consciousness together explained 31% of the variance in self-objectification. However, private body consciousness was not significantly correlated with interoceptive awareness, which may explain the many nonsignificant results in self-objectification studies that have used private body consciousness as a measure of body awareness.

Conclusions/Significance

We propose interoceptive awareness, assessed by heartbeat perception, as a measure of body awareness in self-objectification studies. Our findings have implications for those clinical conditions, in women, which are characterised by self-objectification and low interoceptive awareness, such as eating disorders.  相似文献

Converging evidence indicates that primates have a distinct cortical image of homeostatic afferent activity that reflects all aspects of the physiological condition of all tissues of the body. This interoceptive system, associated with autonomic motor control, is distinct from the exteroceptive system (cutaneous mechanoreception and proprioception) that guides somatic motor activity. The primary interoceptive representation in the dorsal posterior insula engenders distinct highly resolved feelings from the body that include pain, temperature, itch, sensual touch, muscular and visceral sensations, vasomotor activity, hunger, thirst, and 'air hunger'. In humans, a meta-representation of the primary interoceptive activity is engendered in the right anterior insula, which seems to provide the basis for the subjective image of the material self as a feeling (sentient) entity, that is, emotional awareness.  相似文献

The first attempts to introduce computerized power spectrum analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) as an intraoperative anaesthesia monitoring device started approximately 30 years ago. Since that time, the effects of various anaesthetic agents, sedative and analgesic drugs on the EEG pattern have been addressed in numerous studies in human patients and different animal species. These studies revealed dose-dependent changes in the EEG power spectrum for many intravenous and volatile anaesthetics. Moreover, EEG responses evoked by surgical stimuli during relative light levels of surgical anaesthesia have been classified as 'arousal' and 'paradoxical arousal' reaction, previously referred to as 'desynchronization' and 'synchronization', respectively. Contrasting reports on the correlation between quantitative EEG (QEEG) variables derived from power spectrum analysis (i.e. spectral edge frequency, median frequency) and simultaneously recorded clinical signs such as movement and haemodynamic responses, however, limited the routine use of intraoperative EEG monitoring. In addition, the appearance of EEG burst suppression pattern and isoelectricity at clinically relevant concentrations/doses of newer general anaesthetics (i.e. isoflurane, sevoflurane, propofol) may have weakened the dose-related EEG changes previously reported. Despite these findings, the EEG power spectrum analysis may still provide valuable information during intraoperative monitoring in the individual subject. The information obtained from EEG power spectrum analysis may be further supplemented by newer EEG indices such as bispectral index and approximate entropy or other neurophysiological monitors including auditory evoked potentials or somatosensory evoked potentials.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of three centrally acting drugs on the significant increase in the intermediate alpha frequency of the electroencephalogram (EEG) that accompanied meditation in a male volunteer. When compared to the EEG recorded before each of the three drugs was administered, naloxone tended to enhance the increase in the power of the intermediate alpha EEG (9.4–10.4 Hz), while diazepam tended to spread the increase to the slow (7.4–9.4 Hz) alpha EEG, and flumazenil was without much effect on the overall EEG pattern. However, these EEG changes when compared to similar changes obtained with saline administration were not significantly different from the latter. Thus, it is unlikely that the EEG correlates of meditation are causally related to the rise or fall of endogenous opioid peptides or benzodiazepinelike substances in the brain.This research was supported by a grant from the Singapore Turf Club (STC 4837).
