We studied the variation on floral traits of Narcissus cyclamineus, a species endemic to the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. We analyzed the effect of different breeding systems and the degree of herkogamy and stigmatic exertion on female reproductive success. Results showed that, while variation on floral structures is relatively low (i.e. less than 25% for all sterile structures), CVs for herkogamy and stigmatic exertion are much higher. We also found a considerable variation among populations in the relative position of stigmas and anthers and a significant effect of breeding system (facilitated autogamy, spontaneous autogamy or xenogamy) on fruit set and seed production. The number of seeds per fruit bears no relation with corona size, degree of stigmatic exertion or herkogamy. However, herkogamy showed a marginally significant effect on mean seed weight per fruit. The results highlight the need to analyze the influence of continuous variations in the position of floral organs on the reproductive success of the monomorphic species of the genus Narcissus.  相似文献

We report microsatellite primer pairs for the wild tristylous daffodil, Narcissus triandrus (Amaryllidaceae). From enriched libraries, we identified 58 unique microsatellite loci. We designed primer pairs for 27 of these loci and screened genomic DNA from 38 to 40 adults from a single population. For eight polymorphic loci, the number of alleles per locus ranged from five to 17. As six primers also amplified loci in three other Narcissus species, including two horticultural varieties, we expect that some of these markers will be transferable to other Narcissus species.  相似文献

Despite the importance of Narcissus to ornamental horticulture, there have been no population genetic studies of wild species, many of which have narrow distributions. Here, we measure selfing rates and levels of genetic diversity at allozyme loci in six populations of Narcissus longispathus, a self-compatible daffodil endemic to a few mountain ranges in southeastern Spain. The populations were distributed among four distinct river valleys encompassing two main watersheds in the Sierra de Cazorla mountains. Selfing rates averaged 0.37 (range 0.23-0.46), resulting in significant inbreeding coefficients for the progeny (f = 0.324). In contrast, estimates of inbreeding in parental genotypes were not significantly different from zero (f = 0.001), indicating that few selfed offspring survive to maturity because of inbreeding depression. Species-wide estimates of genetic diversity for the six populations were P(s) = 0.38, H(es) = 0.119 and A(s) = 1.27 with significant genetic differentiation among populations theta = 0.15. The observed patterns of genetic differentiation among populations are likely influenced by the mating system, and a combination of local topography, watershed affinities and gene flow.  相似文献

The isolation of three lectins with similar N-terminal amino acid sequences from the bulbs of the Chinese daffodil Narcissus tazetta was achieved. The isolation protocol involved ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, affinity chromatography on mannose-agarose, and fast protein liquid chromatography-gel filtration on Superose 12. The lectins were all adsorbed on mannose-agarose and demonstrated a single band with a molecular weight of 13 kDa in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and a single 26 kDa peak in gel filtration, indicating that they were mannose-binding, dimeric proteins. The lectins differed in hemagglutinating activity, with the magnitude of the activity correlating with the ionic strength of the buffer required to elute the lectin from the DEAE-cellulose column. The bulb lectin did not exert potent cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines or fetal bovine lung cells but inhibited syncytium formation in, and reinstated viability of, fetal bovine lung cells infected with bovine immunodeficiency virus.  相似文献

Daffodil flowers extend laterally from the long axes of their stems; as a result, wind on a flower exerts torsional as well as flexural stress on the stem. Stems respond by twisting, and thus flowers reorient to face downwind in moderate winds, in the process reducing their drag by ~30%. This repositioning is facilitated by the stems' relatively low torsional stiffness. Daffodil stems have a ratio of flexural to torsional stiffness of 13.27 ± 0.96 (SD), compared with 8.33 ± 3.20 (SD) for tulip stems, which bear flowers as symmetrical extensions of their long axes, and compared with 1.5 for isotropic, incompressible, circular cylinders.  相似文献

Spatial separation between sexes within hermaphrodite flowers (herkogamy) is widespread among angiosperms and is traditionally viewed as an adaptation that reduces the likelihood of self-pollination. While different degrees of herkogamy have been reported for Crocus, the relationship between sexual organ positions and reproductive fitness has not been explored yet, and studies of the breeding system within natural populations remain scarce within the genus. We analyzed the effects of different breeding systems (spontaneous self-pollination, facilitated self-pollination and cross-pollination) and of herkogamy degree on female reproductive success of the Tuscan endemic Crocus etruscus. Results showed that C. etruscus is monomorphic for style length and self-incompatible (SCI = 0.29). We also detected a significant negative effect of herkogamy on seed set of open-pollinated flowers. Thus, we conclude that the species avoids self-fertilization by self-incompatibility, but interestingly shows also a certain degree of spatial separation of male and female reproductive structures within the same flower. This floral trait could be useful to avoid self-interference thus reducing ovule discounting and pollen loss on its own stigma.  相似文献

There has been disagreement concerning the nature of sexual polymorphisms in Narcissus, a genus of insect-pollinated geophytes native to the Mediterranean. The existence of trimorphic heterostyly in the genus has recently been confirmed, but the occurrence of distyly remains enigmatic. All sexually dimorphic species previously investigated possess two distinct style lengths but anthers of similar height. Stigma-height dimorphism does not qualify as true distyly because of the absence of a reciprocal correspondence in stigma and anther position in the floral morphs. Such reciprocal herkogamy is generally regarded as the defining feature of heterostyly. Here we report on distyly in N. albimarginatus (section Apodanthae), a rare species confined to a single mountain in northwestern Morocco. A population composed of equal numbers of long- and short-styled plants exhibited reciprocal herkogamy with lower anthers of the long-styled morph and upper anthers of the short-styled morph corresponding in height to stigmas of short- and long-styled plants, respectively. The presence of both stigma-height dimorphism and distyly in Narcissus is of general significance to theoretical models of the evolution of heterostyly.  相似文献

The main goal of the study was to assess germination requirements in a threatened daffodil to elaborate a detailed protocol for plant production from seeds, a key tool for conservation. Experiments were carried out both in the laboratory and outdoor conditions. In Pseudonarcissi section, endemic Iberian species of Narcissus studied heretofore have different levels of morphophysiological dormancy (MPD). Embryo length, radicle emergence, and shoot emergence were analyzed to determine the level of MPD. Both interpopulational variability and seed storage duration were also studied. Mean embryo length in fresh seeds was 1.32 mm and the embryo had to grow until it reached at least 2.00 mm to germinate. Embryo growth occurs during warm stratification, after which the radicle emerges when temperatures go down. Seed dormancy was broken in the laboratory at 28/14°C in darkness followed by 15/4°C, but the germination percentage varies depending on the population. In outdoor conditions, seed dispersal occurs in June, the embryo grows during the summer and then the radicle emerges in autumn. The radicle system continues to grow during the winter months, but the shoot does not emerge until the beginning of the spring because it is physiologically dormant and requires a cold period to break dormancy. Early cold temperatures interrupt embryo growth and induce dormancy in seeds with an advanced embryo development. Seeds of N. eugeniae have deep simple epicotyl MPD. In addition, we found that embryo growth and germination were improved by seed storage duration.  相似文献

Stigma-height dimorphism is a sexual polymorphism in which plant populations are composed of two floral morphs that differ significantly in style length but not anther position. The morphs exhibit approach and reverse herkogamy, floral designs that in most species typically occur as monomorphic conditions. We investigated the floral biology of stigma-height dimorphism in the Mediterranean geophyte Narcissus papyraceus (Amaryllidaceae) in an effort to understand the evolutionary forces maintaining stylar polymorphism. Our survey of 66 populations in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco indicated that 56% were dimorphic with the long-styled morph at an average frequency of 0.79. The remaining 44% of populations sampled were monomorphic for the long-styled morph. In dimorphic populations there was a significant positive relation between population size and the frequency of the short-styled morph. Controlled pollinations demonstrated that N. papyraceus is self-sterile with no significant differences in female fertility between intra- and intermorph crosses. Prior self-pollination reduced seed set in flowers that were subsequently cross-pollinated. Estimates of mating patterns using allozyme markers in eight populations indicated that N. papyraceus is largely outcrossing (mean t(m) = 0.81) with no significant differences between monomorphic and dimorphic populations or style morphs. Stigma-height dimorphism in N. papyraceus is maintained in populations by insect-mediated cross-pollination with biased morph ratios and stylar monomorphism likely resulting from the combined influence of the inheritance of the polymorphism, morph-specific differences in assortative mating and founder effects.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Only very few studies have been carried out on seed dormancy/germination in the large monocot genus Narcissus. A primary aim of this study was to determine the kind of seed dormancy in Narcissus hispanicus and relate the dormancy breaking and germination requirements to the field situation.

Methods

Embryo growth, radicle emergence and shoot growth were studied by subjecting seeds with and without an emerged radicle to different periods of warm, cold or warm plus cold in natural temperatures outdoors and under controlled laboratory conditions.

Key Results

Mean embryo length in fresh seeds was approx. 1·31 mm, and embryos had to grow to 2·21 mm before radicle emergence. Embryos grew to full size and seeds germinated (radicles emerged) when they were warm stratified for 90 d and then incubated at cool temperatures for 30 d. However, the embryos grew only a little and no seeds germinated when they were incubated at 9/5, 10 or 15/4 °C for 30 d following a moist cold pre-treatment at 5, 9/5 or 10 °C. In the natural habitat of N. hispanicus, seeds are dispersed in late May, the embryo elongates in autumn and radicles emerge (seeds germinate) in early November; however, if the seeds are exposed to low temperatures before embryo growth is completed, they re-enter dormancy (secondary dormancy). The shoot does not emerge until March, after germinated seeds are cold stratified in winter.

Conclusion

Seeds of N. hispanicus have deep simple epicotyl morphophysiological dormancy (MPD), with the dormancy formula C1bB(root) – C3(epicotyl). This is the first study on seeds with simple MPD to show that embryos in advanced stages of growth can re-enter dormancy (secondary dormancy).  相似文献

Seven alkaloids have been isolated from fresh bulbs of Narcissus angustifolius subsp. transcarpathicus (Amaryllidaceae). Nangustine, reported here for the first time, is the first 5,11-methanomorphanthridine alkaloid with a C-3/C-4 substitution. The structure and stereochemistry of this new alkaloid, as well as those previously known, have been determined by physical and spectroscopic methods. Spectroscopic data of pancracine have been completed. The in vitro assay activity against the parasitic protozoa Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, Trypanosoma cruzi, Leishmania donovani and Plasmodium falciparum was carried out with the compounds nangustine and pancracine.  相似文献

We investigated the origin of stylar polymorphisms in Narcissus, which possesses a remarkable range of stylar conditions and diverse types of floral morphology and pollination biology. Reconstruction of evolutionary change was complicated by incomplete resolution of trees inferred from two rapidly evolving chloroplast regions, but we bracketed reconstructions expected on the fully resolved plastid-based tree by considering all possible resolutions of polytomies on the shortest trees. Stigma-height dimorphism likely arose on several occasions in Narcissus and persisted across multiple speciation events. As proposed in published models, this rare type of stylar polymorphism is ancestral to distyly. While there is no evidence in Narcissus that dimorphism preceded tristyly, a rapid transition between them may explain the lack of a phylogenetic footprint for this evolutionary sequence. The single instances of distyly and tristyly in Narcissus albimarginatus and N. triandrus, respectively, are clearly not homologous, an evolutionary convergence unique to Amaryllidaceae. Floral morphology was likely an important trigger for the evolution of stylar polymorphisms: Concentrated-changes tests indicate that a long, narrow floral tube may have been associated with the emergence of stigma-height dimorphism and that this type of tube, in combination with a deep corona, likely promoted, or at least was associated with, the parallel origins of heterostyly.  相似文献

Darwin proposed that the driving force for the evolution of style polymorphisms is the promotion of cross‐pollination between style morphs, through accurate placement of pollen on the pollinator’s body. This hypothesis has received much attention, but the effect of different pollinators in the fitness of morphs remains poorly understood. Narcissus papyraceus is a style dimorphic species (long ‐L‐ and short ‐S‐ styled) with isoplethic (1 : 1) and L‐monomorphic populations, mainly visited by long‐tongued (LT) nocturnal and short‐tongued (ST) diurnal pollinators, respectively. We studied natural female fertility of morphs, and assessed the role of diurnal and nocturnal pollinators. We also quantified female fertility of the morphs in experimental populations with different morph ratio, exposed to predominately long‐ or short‐tongued pollinators. We found that with LT pollinators, both morphs were successfully pollinated in all morph ratio conditions, suggesting that these insects could be involved in maintenance of the polymorphism, although other factors may also play a role. However, with ST pollinators, S‐plants displayed less fertility than L‐plants, and mating among L‐plants was favoured, implying that the polymorphism is lost. These results underscore the role of pollinators on variations in style polymorphism.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral design in self-compatible plants can influence mating patterns. This study investigated Narcissus longispathus, a self-compatible bee-pollinated species with wide variation in anther-stigma separation (herkogamy), to determine the relationship between variation in this floral trait and the relative amounts of cross- and self-fertilization. METHODS: Anther-stigma separation was measured in the field in six populations of N. longispathus from south-eastern Spain. Variation in herkogamy during the life of individual flowers was also quantified. Multilocus outcrossing rates were estimated from plants differing in herkogamy using allozyme markers. KEY RESULTS: Anther-stigma separation varied considerably among flowers within the six populations studied (range = 1-10 mm). This variation was nearly one order of magnitude larger than the slight, statistically non-significant developmental variation during the lifespan of individual flowers. Estimates of multilocus outcrossing rate for different herkogamy classes (t(m) range = 0.49-0.76) failed to reveal a monotonic increase with increasing herkogamy. CONCLUSIONS: It is suggested that the lack of a positive relationship between herkogamy and outcrossing rate, a result that has not been previously documented for other species, could be mostly related to details of the foraging behaviour of pollinators.  相似文献

Mating patterns in plant populations are influenced by interactions between reproductive traits and ecological conditions, both factors that are likely to vary geographically. Narcissus triandrus, a wide-ranging heterostylous herb, exhibits populations with either two (dimorphic) or three (trimorphic) style morphs and displays substantial geographical variation in demographic attributes and floral morphology. Here, we investigate this variation to determine if demography, morphology, and mating system differ between the two sexual systems. Our surveys in Portugal and NW Spain indicated that dimorphic populations were less dense, of smaller size, and had larger plants and flowers compared to trimorphic populations. Outcrossing rates estimated using allozyme markers revealed similar outcrossing rates in dimorphic and trimorphic populations (t(m) dimorphic=0.759; t(m) trimorphic=0.710). All populations experienced significant inbreeding in progeny (mean F=0.143). In contrast, parental estimates of inbreeding were not significantly different from zero (mean F=0.062), implying that few inbred offspring survive to reproductive maturity due to inbreeding depression. Although the majority of inbreeding results from selfing, significant levels of biparental inbreeding were also detected in eight of the nine populations (mean s(s)-s(m)=0.081). Density was negatively associated with levels of selfing but positively associated with biparental inbreeding. Population size was positively associated with outcrossing but not biparental inbreeding. There were no consistent differences among the style morphs in outcrossing or biparental inbreeding indicating that the maintenance of trimorphism vs dimorphism is unlikely to be associated with inbreeding of maternal parents.  相似文献

Three cultivated varieties of Narcissus tazetta, Grand Soleil d'Or, Chinese Sacred Lily and Cypri, are triploid (2n = 3x+30) with the basic number 10. Grand Soleil d'Or has three homomorphic sets, each comprising 2 long submetacentrics, 4 long acrocentrics and 4 short acrocentrics. Karyotypes of the other two varieties are heteromorphic. Both possess one telocentric satellited chromosome. In addition, Cypri shows translocation between two chromosomes belonging to the seventh and eighth triplets. The number of secondary constrictions varies between 3 (Chinese Sacred Lily) and 4 (Grand Soleil d'Or and Cypri) which is also the number of nucleoli observed in the respective varieties.  相似文献

A recent literature review indicates that pollen limitation of female fertility is a common feature of flowering plants. Despite the ecological and evolutionary significance of pollen limitation, most studies have only examined fertility in a single population at one time. Here we investigate pollen limitation of fruit and seed set in five populations of Narcissus assoanus, a self- sterile, insect-pollinated geophyte, over 2–3 years in southern France. In common with many early spring flowering plants, pollinator visitation to N. assoanus is often infrequent. Supplemental hand-pollination of flowers with outcross pollen significantly increased overall fruit and seed set by 11% and 19%, respectively. Four of the five populations experienced some pollen limitation during the study. For a given year, there was significant variation in pollen limitation among populations. Two of the populations were pollen limited in one year but not in other years in which they were studied. Seed:ovule ratios for open- and hand-pollinated flowers averaged 0.29 and 0.33, respectively. While hand pollination significantly increased the seed:ovule ratio, the low value obtained indicates that the majority of ovules in flowers do not mature seeds despite hand pollination. The role of genetic and environmental factors governing low seed:ovule ratios in N. assoanus is discussed. Received: 28 December 1999 / Accepted: 6 April 2000  相似文献

Natural hybrids between rare and common sympatric species are commonly eradicated to avoid the potential extinction of the rare species, although there is currently no clear predictive framework to quantify this risk. As hybrids can have intrinsic value as new evolutionary pathways, further knowledge on the factors controlling hybridization is needed. In this study we evaluated the role of pollination patterns in hybridization events in two sympatric populations of Narcissus cavanillesii and N. serotinus in Portugal. Narcissus cavanillesii is a rare species, while N. serotinus is widely distributed across the Mediterranean. The hybrid, N. ×perezlarae, is quite frequent in southeastern Spain but is scarce in Portugal. Reciprocal manual crossings confirmed compatibility between the two species, although hybridization was more successful when N. cavanillesii participated as female. Narcissus cavanillesii and N. serotinus only shared one pollinator, Megachile sp. (Hymenoptera), which had low visitation rates and high flower constancy. No single isolation mechanism was fully effective in preventing hybridization. Temporal displacement of flowering peaks, strong pollinator specificity, and high flower constancy in the shared pollinator all contributed to limiting hybridization in this site. In other sympatric occurrences, different phenological windows and pollination assemblages may allow greater frequency of the hybrid.  相似文献

Heterostyly and related polymorphisms (e.g. stigma‐height dimorphism) have been used as model systems for studying the origin and maintenance of plant population variability. Stigma‐height dimorphism frequently occurs in Narcissus and is associated with a particular flower shape. In the present study, we describe a new, peculiar case of stigma‐height dimorphism in Narcissus broussonetii, a species on the margin of the geographical distribution of the genus. We determined the stylar condition of N. broussonetii and its variation across populations, analyzed perianth morphology and its relationship with stylar variation, and compared this species with other stylar dimorphic species of the genus. We also studied the incompatibility system and pollination ecology of the species. Narcissus broussonetii is a style‐dimorphic species, as suggested in early studies that were subsequently neglected, and displays unusual flower morphology, with a long floral tube and a virtual absence of a corona. The species shows a late‐ (ovarian) acting incompatibility system and crosses within and between morphs are fertile. We observed short‐tongued diurnal and long‐tongued nocturnal pollinators. Our findings confirm that the presence of the observed dimorphism across populations is most probably the result of the joint action of a nonheteromorphic incompatibility system, extremely long and narrow floral tubes, and a combined role of short‐ and long‐tongued pollinators. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 177 , 644–656.  相似文献
