Regularities of distribution and primary production of an Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis (Kanno et Matsubara) Mak. population, an agar-containing red alga, were studied in the Bay ot Izmena. Experiments were conducted in a flow-through system under conditions similar to algal habitats. The population of A. tobuchiensis unattached to the ground may be from a few centimeters to as much as 1 m thick. It has been shown that only the upper part of a stratum 15–20 cm thick receives a sufficient amount ot light to realize its production potential. While 15–20% of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) of that falling on the water surface reaches the stratum surface, only 0.1% of PAR from that falling on the water surface penetrates through stratum 15 cm thick. It has been shown for A. tobuchiensis that its photosynthetic rate curve during the daytime mainly follows the PAR intensity curve. The highest values of photosynthetic rate have been measured in the afternoon when PAR reaches its maximum. It is noted that a stratum 15–20 cm thick has peak values ot net primary production (NPP) which averages 3.2 g C m?2 day?1. The total area of A. tobuchiensis population was 23.4 km2, and its biomass was 125 000 tons in this area. On average, the NPP of the A. tobuchiensis population made up in summer and in autumn was 46.8 and 25.0% of its biomass, respectively.  相似文献

The effects of temperature (20, 24 and 28 °C) and irradiance (15 and 40 μmol photon m−2 s−1) on the nitrate and ammonium uptake rates of the subtropical red alga, Laurencia brongniartii, were investigated to prepare for tank cultivation. Nitrate uptake followed saturation kinetics and was faster at higher irradiances and temperatures. In contrast, ammonium uptake was linear over the experimental range and was not affected by an increase in temperature. A parameter, β, was calculated to compare substrate uptake rates of nitrate along the linear portion of the uptake curve with that of ammonium. For nitrate, β was lower at low irradiance and higher at high irradiance (β = 0.007 ± 0.003 and 0.030 ± 0.002 [μmol N L−1 (μmol N gww−1 d)−1], respectively). However, β was 0.023 ± 0.002 and 0.034 ± 0.002 [μmol N L−1 (μmol N gww−1 d−1)−1] for ammonium, suggesting a preference for ammonium over nitrate.  相似文献

An adenylate cyclase activity of 16.02±1.03 pmol cAMP produced min−1 (mg protein)−1 was detected in a cell homogenate ofDunaliella viridis, a unicellular halotolerant green alga. It was present in both the membrane fraction and soluble fraction separated from the homogenate. Adenylate cyclase activity in the homogenate was activated by 1μM GTPγS but not by Ca2++calmodulin, suggesting this enzyme to be regulated by a G-protein. A phosphodiesterase activity of 23.12±15.03 pmol cAMP decomposed min−1 (mg protein)−1 was found in the homogenate. These activities suggest the presence of a cAMP mediated signal transduction system inDunaliella. Cells, transferred from 1.7 M NaCl medium to 1 M NaCl, showed rapid increase in cAMP within 2 min to about 1.5 times the original concentration (from 2.4±0.2 to 3.9±0.2 pmol per 108 cells) which was recovered in 30 min.  相似文献

Natural 15N abundance measurements of ecosystem nitrogen (N) pools and 15N pool dilution assays of gross N transformation rates were applied to investigate the potential of δ15N signatures of soil N pools to reflect the dynamics in the forest soil N cycle. Intact soil cores were collected from pure spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and mixed spruce-beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stands on stagnic gleysol in Austria. Soil δ15N values of both forest sites increased with depth to 50 cm, but then decreased below this zone. δ15N values of microbial biomass (mixed stand: 4.7 ± 0.8‰, spruce stand: 5.9 ± 0.9‰) and of dissolved organic N (DON; mixed stand: 5.3 ± 1.7‰, spruce stand: 2.6 ± 3.3‰) were not significantly different; these pools were most enriched in 15N of all soil N pools. Denitrification represented the main N2O-producing process in the mixed forest stand as we detected a significant 15N enrichment of its substrate NO3 (3.6 ± 4.5‰) compared to NH4+ (−4.6 ± 2.6‰) and its product N2O (−11.8 ± 3.2‰). In a 15N-labelling experiment in the spruce stand, nitrification contributed more to N2O production than denitrification. Moreover, in natural abundance measurements the NH4+ pool was slightly 15N-enriched (−0.4 ± 2.0 ‰) compared to NO3 (−3.0 ± 0.6 ‰) and N2O (−2.1 ± 1.1 ‰) in the spruce stand, indicating nitrification and denitrification operated in parallel to produce N2O. The more positive δ15N values of N2O in the spruce stand than in the mixed stand point to extensive microbial N2O reduction in the spruce stand. Combining natural 15N abundance and 15N tracer experiments provided a more complete picture of soil N dynamics than possible with either measurement done separately.  相似文献

On binding toVicia faba lectin, the fluorescence of 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-D-glucoPyranoside was quantitatively quenched showing that the interaction of 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-D-glucoPyranoside took Place in a binding environment. The binding of the fluorescent sugar was saccharide sPecific as evidenced by the reversal of 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-D-glucoPyranoside fluorescence quenching by D-fructose. The association constant,K a, values for the 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-D-glucoPyranoside was determined by comPetition study emPloying reversal of fluorescence quenching of 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-D-glucoPyranoside by D-fructose. TheK a value obtained for D-fructose was 1.07 ±0.03 X 104 M-1 and for 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-D-glucoPyranoside was 1.60 ±0.05 X 104 M-1 at 15°C. TheK a values of 2.51 ±0.06 X 104M-1, l.26 ±0.02 X 104 M-1 and 0.56 ±0.01 X 104M-1, resPectively at 10°, 20° and 30°C were obtained from the ChiPman equation. The relative fluorescence quenching, ΔF a, at infinite concentration of the free saccharide sites ofVicia faba lectin [P′] was 93.5% at 30°C and the binding constant for 4-methylumbelliferyl-α-D-glucoPyranoside lectin interaction as derived by Yank and Hanaguchi equation was 0.63 ±0.01 X 104M-1.  相似文献

In August of 2006 in Stark Strait (in the Peter the Great Bay) Foraminifera and Nematoda communities were investigated at two stations: in bottom under a red alga Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis bed and on a site located outside of the bed. Bottom sediments at the stations are represented by sands of various silting extent. Foraminifera dominated at both stations, the second place by abundance was occupied by Nematoda. Extremely high population density of meiobenthos, 14278.9 ± 4623.1 thousand sp./m2, was observed under the Ahnfeltia bed. The foraminifera percentage was 98.1%, which was probably connected with the mass development of diatom algae on Ahnfeltia. A high degree of domination of one Foraminifera species was recorded—Cribroelphidium frigidum. Nematoda constituted 1.5% with the prevalence of Comesomatidae family representatives. At the station situated outside of Ahnfeltia field mean population density of meiobenthos was an order lower—1731.8 ± 621.3 thousand sp./m2. Foraminifera constituted 63.8% of the total meiobenthos density with Eggerella advena as the dominating species. Among Nematoda (12.5%) Paracanthonchus macrodon, Axonolaimus seticaudatus and Monoposthia latiannulata were dominant. Foraminifera and Nematoda community under Ahnfeltia bed, where bottom sediments are more silted, had low indices of species diversity and a high degree of domination.  相似文献

The incorporation of 15NH4+ as a function of time and concentration was used to estimate ammonium uptake by Caulerpa cupressoides (West) C. Agardh, taken from its habitat on the sediments of Tague Bay lagoon, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. 15N-based uptake rates followed Michaelis-Menten type saturation kinetics; the maximum uptake rate was 8.7 ± 3.0 μmol N/g dry wt·h at 26° C and the half-saturation constant was 48 ± 10 μM (X?± SE). The high half-saturatiaon constant reflects the dependence of Caulerpa on sediment pore waters as a nitrogen source. Calculations of uptake from isotope time course data were compared to estimates made from ammonium depletion. More ammonium disappeared than could be accounted for by the incorporation of 15N in Caulerpa, and isotope dilution of the ammonium pool is shown not to be responsible for underestimates of uptake, primarily because large 15N additions (40–300 μM) were used. It is suggested that either (1) a secondary ammonium sink such as wall sorption or bacterial uptake significantly influenced ammonium concentrations, or (2) 15N was lost as labelled dissolved organic nitrogen or volatilized during 15N sample preparation.  相似文献

In this study the red alga, Gracilaria lemaneiformis, was cultivated with the scallop Chlamys farreri in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system for 3 weeks at the Marine Aquaculture Laboratory of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) in Qingdao, Shandong Province, North China. The nutrient uptake rate and nutrient reduction efficiency of ammonium and phosphorus from scallop excretion were determined. The experiment included four treatments each with three replicates, and three scallop monoculture systems served as the control. Scallop density (407.9 ± 2.84 g m−3) remained the same in all treatments while seaweed density differed. The seaweed density was set at four levels (treatments 1, 2, 3, 4) with thallus wet weight of 69.3 ± 3.21, 139.1 ± 3.80, 263.5 ± 6.83, and 347.6 ± 6.30 g m−3, respectively. There were no significant differences in the initial nitrogen and phosphorus concentration between each treatment and the control group (ANOVA, p > 0.05). The results showed that at the end of the experiment, the nitrogen concentration in the control group and treatment 1 was significantly higher than in the other treatments. There was also a significant difference in phosphorus concentration between the control group and the IMTA treatments (ANOVA, p < 0.05). Growth rate, C and N content of the thallus, and mortality of scallop was different between the IMTA treatments. The nutrient uptake rate and nutrient reduction efficiency of ammonium and phosphorus changed with different cultivation density and time. The maximum reduction efficiency of ammonium and phosphorus was 83.7% and 70.4%, respectively. The maximum uptake rate of ammonium and phosphorus was 6.3 and 3.3 μmol g−1 DW h−1. A bivalve/seaweed biomass ratio from 1:0.33 to 1:0.80 (treatments 2, 3, and 4) was preferable for efficient nutrient uptake and for maintaining lower nutrient levels. Results indicate that G. lemaneiformis can efficiently absorb the ammonium and phosphorus from scallop excretion and is a suitable candidate for IMTA.  相似文献

An account is given of the environmental chemistry and physiological ecology of a population ofRivularia atra growing in the upper eulittoral of Tyne Sands, a sheltered bay in S-E. Scotland. Large masses of detached seaweed tend to be deposited in the supralittoral of this bay and their decay leads to elevated levels of dissolved phosphate (typically 50–150 μg 1−1 P) in the water of shallow pools of the upper eulittoral. Much (usually 50%) of this phosphate is organic, as opposed to phosphate in the open sea just outside the bay, where it is almost entirely inorganic. This organic phosphate is presumably available to theRivularia, as colonies show marked alkaline phosphatase activity. The colonies are small (mostly <1 mm diameter), but with a high nitrogenase activity (expressed per unit chlorophyll) in the light are high (sometimes approaching 0.2 nM C2H4 μg chl a−1 min−1 × 10−3) but there is a rapid and very marked drop on transfer to the dark. It is suggested that this latter feature may be of adaptive significance for this population, as colonies in many pools are covered intermittently by sand.  相似文献

Blooms ofChrysochromulina breviturrita Nich. (Prymnesiophyceae) have been found to be restricted to lakes above pH 5.5 even though the alga is able to tolerate pH 4.0 in laboratory culture. A possible explanation is the increased transparency in acidifying lakes and a sensitivity ofC. breviturrita to high light intensities. A comparison was made withMougeotia sp., a filamentous green alga which co-occurs in moderately acidic lakes and has a similar pH tolerance range. This alga forms dense, floating mats or amorphous clouds in the upper littoral zone, where it would be exposed to full sunlight irradiances. In cultures ofC. breviturrita, prolonged exposures to 1600 μE · m−2 · s−1 (I0′) resulted in reductions in cell yield which were dependent age at the onset of exposure to high light intensity. Only cultures exposed to high light intensities during late stationary phase were able to recover to control levels and no recovery occurred if these cultures were nitrogen deficient.Mougeotia was more tolerant of both high light intensity and nitrogen limitation during the recovery period. The inability ofC. breviturrita to recover from the effects of high light intensity during nitrogen deprivation may be particularly important in small, stratified lakes which are undergoing acidification. The slow rate of vertical circulation, and increasing transparency, would prolong exposure of the alga to the high irradiance levels of nutrient-deficient epilimnetic waters. This suggests that the geographic distribution ofC. breviturrita may be explained in part by the increasing light intensities in lakes undergoing acidification.  相似文献

The yield and physicochemical properties of native and alkali treated carrageenan from Eucheuma isiforme harvested from the Nicaraguan coast were investigated. The native carrageenan yield was 57.2% of dry weight and decreased to 43.5% when the alga was alkali treated. Native carrageenan viscosities showed significant differences between native (144.6 ± 3.3 cPs) and treated carrageenan (113.9 ± 2.6 cPs) (p < 0.01). Alkali treatment reduced carrageenan sulphate content by 19.3% and increased 3,6 AG content by 13%. Alkali-treated carrageenan formed very weak gels in 1.5% solutions (<50 g cm−2). Chemical analysis and FTIR spectra revealed that Eucheuma isiforme from Nicaragua is a good source of relatively pure iota-carrageenan with sufficient quality to serve as a substitute for traditional iota-carrageenan sources.  相似文献

Codium fragile (Suringar) Hariot is an edible green alga farmed in Korea using seed stock produced from regeneration of isolated utricles and medullary filaments. Experiments were conducted to reveal the optimal conditions for nursery culture and out-growing of C. fragile. Sampling and measurement of underwater irradiance were carried out at farms cultivating C. fragile at Wando, on the southwestern coast of Korea, from October 2004 to August 2005. Growth of erect thalli and underwater irradiance were measured over a range of depths for three culture stages. During the nursery cultivation stage (Stage I), growth rate was greatest at 0.5 m depth (0.055 ± 0.032 mm day−1), where the average midday irradiance over 60 days was 924 ± 32 μmol photons m−2 s−1. During the pre-main cultivation stage (Stage II), the greatest growth rate occurred at a depth of 2 m (0.113 ± 0.003 mm day−1) with an average irradiance of 248 ± 116 μmol photons m−2 s−1. For the main cultivation stage (Stage III) of the alga, thalli achieved the greatest increase in biomass at 1 m depth (7.2 ± 1.0 kg fresh wt m−1). These results suggest that optimal growth at each cultivation stages of C. fragile could be controlled by depth of cultivation rope.  相似文献

Kalk Bay, South Africa, has a typical south coast zonation pattern with a band of seaweed dominating the mid-eulittoral and between two molluscan-herbivore dominated upper and lower eulittoral zones. Encrusting coralline algae were very obvious features of these zones. The most abundant herbivores in the upper eulittoral were the limpet, Cymbula oculus (10.4 ± 1.6 individuals m−2; 201.65 ± 32.68 g.m−2) and the false limpet, Siphonaria capensis (97.07± 19.92 individuals m−2; 77.93 16.02 g.m−2). The territorial gardening limpet, Scutellastra cochlear, dominated the lower eulittoral zone, achieving very high densities (545.27 ± 84.35 m−2) and biomass (4630.17 ± 556.13 g.m−2), and excluded all other herbivores and most seaweeds, except for its garden alga and the encrusting coralline alga, Spongites yendoi (35.93 ± 2.26% cover). In the upper eulittoral zone, encrusting coralline algae were only present in the guts of the chiton Acanthochiton garnoti (30.5 ± 1.33%) and the limpet C. oculus (2.9 ± 0.34%). The lower eulittoral zone limpet, Scutellastra cochlear also had a large percentage of encrusting coralline algae in its gut with limpets lacking gardens having higher (45.1 ± 1.68%) proportions of coralline algae in their guts than those with gardens (25.6 ± 0.8%). Encrusting coralline algae had high organic contents, similar to those of other encrusting and turf-forming algae, but higher organic contents than foliose algae. Radula structure, grazing frequencies as a percentage of the area grazed (upper eulittoral 73.25 ± 3.60% d−1; lower eulittoral 46.0 ± 3.29% d−1), and algal organic content provided evidence to support the dietary habits of the above herbivores. The data show that many intertidal molluscs are actively consuming encrusting coralline algae and that these seaweeds should be seen as an important food source.  相似文献

We evaluated the combined effects of algal (Chlorella vulgaris) food levels (low, 0.5 × 106 (or 2.9 μg C ml−1); and high, 1 × 106 cells ml−1 (or 5.8 μg C ml−1)) and zinc concentrations (0, 0.125, and 0.250 mg l−1 of ZnCl2) on the competition between two common planktonic rotifers Anuraeopsis fissa and Brachionus rubens using their population growth. Median lethal concentration data (LC50) (mean ± 95% confidence intervals) showed that B. rubens was more resistant to zinc (0.554 ± 0.08 mg l−1) than A. fissa (0.315 ± 0.07 mg l−1). A. fissa when grown alone or with Zn was always numerically more abundant than B. rubens. When grown in the absence of zinc, under low- and high-food levels, the peak abundances of A. fissa varied from 251 ± 24 to 661 ± 77 ind. ml−1, respectively, and the corresponding maxima for B. rubens were 52 ± 3 and 102 ± 18 ind. ml−1. At a given food level, competition for food reduced the peak abundances of both rotifers considerably. Increase in Zn concentration also lowered the rotifer abundances. The impact of zinc on competition between the two-rotifer species was evident at low-food level, mainly for A. fissa. At zinc concentrations of 0 and 0.125 mg l−1, the populations of both rotifers continued to grow for about 10 days, but thereafter B. rubens began to decline. Role of zinc on the competitive outcome of the two species is discussed in relation to the changing algal densities in natural water bodies.  相似文献

A stratified methodology for water sampling on tidal flats was adopted in 1988 and 1989 in the Bay of Somme. Analyses of nutrients, particulate matter and faecal germs showed the poor mixing of fresh and marine water and the weakness of stratification of the water column. Freshwater is pushed by marine water to the inner reaches of the bay and there are only a few lenses with true estuarine characteristics. In 1990, water was sampled simultaneously on the Somme river, the tidal flats and in the open sea, in order to point out estuarine gradients of several physical and chemical parameters and their evolution during a tidal cycle. The role of continental inputs was confirmed for faecal pollution, nitrate (20–25 mg l−1), nitrite and silicate. The importance of ammonium excreted by the estuarine benthic populations was highlighted. High concentrations of continental chlorophyll (450 mg m−3) were also measured and contribute, with nitrates and ammonium, to eutrophication in the Bay of Somme. Pollution of the southern part of the bay by marine waters was regularly observed during the flow, raising doubts about the purifying capacity of sea-water and the conservation of faecal bacteria. A regular survey of fresh-water inputs and sea-water quality, offshore and within the bay, is considered to enable estimation of their respective influences in eutrophication processes in the Bay of Somme.  相似文献

The biokinetics of glucose metabolism were evaluated in Aeromonas hydrophila during growth in an anaerobic biosystem. After approx 34 h growth, A. hydrophila metabolized 5,000 mg glucose l−1 into the end-products ethanol, acetate, succinate and formate. The maximum growth rate, μ m, half saturation coefficients, K s, microbial yield coefficient, Y, cell mass decay rate coefficient, k d, and substrate inhibition coefficient, K si were 0.25 ± 0.03 h−1, 118 ± 31 mg glucose l−1, 0.12 μg DNA mg glucose−1, 0.01 h−1, and 3,108 ± 1,152 mg glucose l−1, respectively. These data were used to predict the performance of a continuous growth system with an influent glucose concentration of 5,000 mg l−1. Results of the analysis suggest that A. hydrophila will metabolize glucose at greater than 95% efficiency when hydraulic retention times (HRTs) exceed 7 h, whereas the culture is at risk of washing out at an HRT of 6.7 h.  相似文献

The cells of Acetobacter xylinum decreased phosphate concentration in the medium from 5 to 2.5 or 0.3 mM during incubation in the presence of Mg2+ and glucose, or Mg2+ and casamino acids, respectively. The prevalence of orthophosphate or polyphosphate in the biomass of A. xylinum depends on the medium composition. Under phosphate uptake in the presence of glucose, the content of orthophosphate in the biomass changed little, while that of polyphosphate increased fourfold. At incubation with casamino acids, the content of orthophosphate increased 15 times, while that of polyphosphate increased only 2.5 times. Some part of orthophosphate in this case seems to be bound with the cell surface. The polyphosphate chain length in the cells of A. xylinim increases under phosphate uptake. This increase is more noticeable in the presence of glucose. Casamino acids can be replaced by α-ketoglutaric acid in combination with (NH4)2SO4, or arginine, or glutamine, the catabolism of which results in formation of NH4 + and α-ketoglutarate.  相似文献

Lipid extracts of the red algaGracilaria longa were studied by1H- and13C-NMR spectroscopy. Peaks in the13C-NMR spectra attributable to sterols, chlorophylls and carotenoids allowed free and acylated cholesterol, chlorophylla and lutein to be identified as the most abundant components of these classes. A content of 0.5 ± 0.1 μmoles of total cholesterol/g wet alga was estimated from the1H-NMR spectrum, which also allowed the determination of the phosphatidylcholine/total lipid molar ratio (9.5 ± 0.5%). The13C-NMR spectroscopic experiments provided information on the position of the double bonds on the fatty acid residues. A comparison between NMR spectra of lipid extracts obtained for wet and dried alga showed that the alga undergoes both a dramatic peroxidation and some glycolipid degradation during the drying process.  相似文献

Five strains of the entomopathogenic fungusMetarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin were bioassayed against the coffee berry borerHypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) under laboratory conditions (T=27±2°C; R.H.=90±5% and 12∶12 L∶D light cycle). The LC50 values for the three most virulent strains, Ma4, Ma5 and Ma3, were 4.2, 5.9 and 6.7×106 conidia/ml of suspension respectively and median lethal times (LT50) observed were between 9.7 and 13.8 days. The maximum percentage sporulation was obtained with strains Ma3 and Ma4 both with 90% sporulation and Ma10 with 60.7%. These results suggest that the fungusM. anisopliae could be incorporated into an integrated control programme for the biological control ofH. hampei.

Les résultats montrent que les souches Ma4, Ma5 et Ma3 sont les plus virulentes contreH. hampei, avec des valeurs de concentration létale moyenne (CL50, valeurs minimales et maximales, ± limite de confiance à 95%) de 0,0226 (0,0195–0,00260), 0,0328 (0,0267–0,0390) et 0,0354 (0,0297–0,0417) équivalentes à 4,2, 5,9 et 6,7×106 conidies/ml de suspension et un temps létal moyen (TL50) entre 9,7 et 13,8 jours. Les pourcentages maximaux de sporulation ont été obtenus avec les souches Ma3 et Ma4 avec 90%, la souche Ma10 présentant le pourcentage le plus bas de sporulation (67%). Ces résultats démontrent queM. anisopliae peut être introduit dans un programme de lutte intégrée contreH. hampei.

We studied the functional response of the freshwater unionid bivalve Anodonta anatina, feeding on five phytoplankton strains differing in food quality: the small green alga Scenedesmus obliquus, a toxic and a non-toxic strain of the filamentous cyanobacterium Planktothrix agardhii and a toxic and a non-toxic strain of the coccoid cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. On S. obliquus, A. anatina had a type II functional response with a maximum mass-specific ingestion rate (IRmax) of 5.24 mg C g DW−1 h−1 and a maximum mass-specific clearance rate (CRmax) of 492 (±38) ml g DW−1 h−1, the highest values for all the phytoplankton strains that were investigated. On toxic and non-toxic P. agardhii filaments, A. anatina also had a type II functional response, but IRmax and CRmax were considerably lower (IRmax 1.90 and 1.56 mg C g DW−1 h−1; CRmax 387 (±97) and 429 (±71) ml g DW−1 h−1, respectively) than on S. obliquus. Toxicity of P. agardhii had no effect on the filtration rate of the mussels. On the non-toxic M. aeruginosa (small coccoid cells), we also observed a type II functional response, although a type I functional response fitted almost as good to these data. For the colonial and toxic M. aeruginosa, a type I functional response fitted best to the data: IR increased linearly with food concentration and CR remained constant. CRmax and IRmax values for the (colonial) toxic M. aeruginosa (383 (±40) ml g DW−1 h−1; 3.7 mg C g DW−1 h−1) demonstrated that A. anatina filtered and ingested this cyanobacterium as good as the other cyanobacterial strains. However, on the non-toxic M. aeruginosa we observed the lowest CRmax of all phytoplankters (246 (±23) ml g DW−1 h−1, whereas IRmax was similar to that on toxic M. aeruginosa. The high maximum ingestion rates on S. obliquus and M. aeruginosa indicate a short handling time of these phytoplankton species. The high clearance rates on S. obliquus, toxic M. aeruginosa and P. agardhii reflect a high effort of the mussels to filter these particles out of the water column at low concentrations. The low clearance rates on non-toxic M. aeruginosa may be explained by the small size and coccoid form of this cyanobacterium, which may have impaired A. anatina to efficiently capture the cells. Although A. anatina had relatively high maximum clearance rates on non-toxic and toxic P. agardhii, this cyanobacterium does not seem to be a good food source, because of the observed high rates of pseudofaeces production and hence low ingestion rates.  相似文献
