In an attempt to examine possible associations between stages of agespecific mortality and various causes of death, vital records of 159 male and 192 female crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), housed as a single group, were analyzed. Survival and hazard rates associated with each of five distinct categories of causes of death were estimated for males and females, using the nonparametric kernel method. The obtained overall survival and hazard functions were similar to those reported previously for rhesus monkeys. Among two stages identified in age-specific mortality, the first stage, characterized by rapidly decreasing hazard rates up to about 1.5–2 years of age, was discriminated by the occurrence of deaths due to unfitness for postnatal life. The second stage lasted up to the age of 10–15 years and was largely characterized by a high incidence of violent deaths. The respective hazard rates in males and females attained peaks during the early reproductive period of life and markedly decreased thereafter. This pattern was interpreted to indicate that second stage mortality is unlikely related to senescence, but rather, seems to depend on extrinsic environmental factors. Thus, when considering overall hazard rates in Macaca fascicularis, the onset of senescence, as a result of the specific aspects of simian reproduction, may be hidden from view, and mortality due to aging may only be appreciable after 10 to 15 years of age. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

After an agonistic conflict between two animals, they may exchange affiliative social contacts. The function of this reconciliation behavior is thought to be the repair of the social relationship between the two opponents. We examined the hypothesis that reconciliation is socially effective because it may also lead to a reduction of the victim's acute stress. Reconciliation was studied in a well-established captive group of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). The behavior of the victim in a 10 min period after the end of an agonistic interaction was recorded and compared with that of a control observation made on the same animal the next day. The tendency to reconcile was elevated above control levels only during the first 3 min. Reconciliation led to a fast reduction in scratching rates and to a decrease of the reoccurrence of aggression received. Losers took the initiative to reconcile more than expected. Dominants granted reconciliation depending on their relatedness with the victims and on the quality of the relationship with them. After those interactions in which contra-aggression and no clear submission occurred, the reconciliation rate was remarkably high. These results suggest that reconciliation can be an effective means to reduce the victim's acute stress and that its function in repairing social relationships can partly be mediated by its physiological effects. The intimate relation between the quality of the social relationship and the conciliatory tendency can be extrapolated to explain interspecific variation.  相似文献

Background As in other model organisms, genetic background in the non‐human primates Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis is an experimental variable that affects the response of other study variables. Genetic background in model organisms is manipulated by breeding schemes but is generally pre‐determined by the source population used to found captive stocks. In M. fascicularis three such sources have been distinguished, however, these are not routinely taken into consideration when designing research. Methods We exemplify a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)‐based strategy to trace the maternal geographic origins of M. fascicularis animals of unspecified origins. Results Macaca fascicularis of unspecified origins kept at primate research centers carry mtDNA haplotypes representing all three major genetic subdivisions. Conclusions We suggest that the genetic background of study animals could be better specified in the future using an mtDNA‐based approach, which would enable informed selection of study animals and help reduce variation within and among studies.  相似文献

The responses to a model snake in captive crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and captive tufted capuchins (Cebus apella) were investigated. In both species the amount of fear behavior was higher in the presence of the model than during baseline conditions. Unlike the macaques, in the capuchins the frequency of these behaviors decreased across trials. In the two species the amount of explorative and manipulative behaviors and the use of space were also different. Unlike macaques, all capuchins manipulated the objects available in the testing room, and three subjects contacted the apparatus by using objects. Macaques did not show significant preferences for any particular part of the testing room. In both conditions, capuchins used the floor more than macaques did. Further, capuchins increased the use of the floor across experimental trials. Latency to reach the floor was higher in macaques than in capuchins. When on the floor, capuchins spent most of the time close to the snake apparatus. It is proposed that the behavioral differences between capuchins and macaques in the responses to a potential predator indicate that capuchins have a greater propensity to explore and to contact the novel stimulus directly, or by means of objects, than macaques do. These tendencies may lead to the exploitation of novel features in the environment.  相似文献

Chronic inflammatory enteric diseases occur commonly in humans and animals, especially in captive bred macaques. However, information about the etiology of idiopathic chronic inflammatory diarrhea in cynomolgus monkeys is limited. In this paper, we reported the unusual case of idiopathic chronic diarrhea in a captive cynomolgus monkey based on microbial, imaging, and microbiome examinations.  相似文献

We surveyed agonistic behaviors of 20 captive groups of pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina) housed under identical spatial conditions. Fifteen groups contained one male each; the other five groups contained no adult males. Groups included six to twelve adult females, some of which had infants with them. We found no relationship between social density of groups and incidence of agonistic behavior, but significantly more contact aggression (grab, hit, push, bite) and noncontact aggression (chase, open-mouth “threat,” bark vocalization) occurred among females in groups containing no males than in those containing one male each. Apparently, males played an important role in the inhibition of intragroup conflict. We also found that females in groups containing males exhibited less noncontact aggression if infants were present than if no infants resided in their groups. Thus, competition of females over infants must not have been an important constituent of intragroup conflict under the conditions of this survey.  相似文献

Sixteen pigtailed monkeys (Macaca nemestrina) were studied to determine patterns of estrous cycles and sexual behavior. The average estrous cycle lasted 42 days, the average tumescent period 21 days, and the average quiescent period 17 days. Results are consistent with those obtained from studies of individually caged monkeys. The mean length of gestation for five live births was 174.6 days with a range of 167 to 179 days. Patterns of heterosexual, homosexual, and self-oriented sexual behavior are described and quantified.Mating behaviors of Japanese and pigtailed monkeys were compared. Although individual elements of sexual patterns were similar, there were quantitative differences and differences in the temporal patterning of the behavior.Supported by Grant FR 00166 from the National Institutes of Health, United States Public Health Service.  相似文献

Variation in birth sex ratios in primates can be accounted for by two hypotheses: the local resource competition hypothesis [Silk: American Naturalist 121:56–66, 1983] and the hypothesis of Trivers & Willard [Science 179:90–92, 1973] concerning the maternal effect on the quality of a male. We examined the effects of female dominance rank on aspects of reproduction in three well-established captive groups of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). High-ranking females produced a higher proportion of sons than low-ranking females, and factors other than rank did not have significant effects on birth sex ratios. Interbirth intervals following daughters were longer than those following sons, but they were independent of the mother's rank. The sons of high-ranking mothers had better survival prospects than sons of low-ranking mothers in some of the groups; no such difference was found for daughters. Overall, there was no sex difference in survival up to 5 years of age. These results support the Trivers-Willard hypothesis rather than the local resource competition hypothesis. An analysis of interbirth intervals suggested that the deviation in birth sex ratio is already established at conception.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the manipulative propensities of a captive group of lion-tailed macaques (Macaca silenus). Simple natural objects (browse and bamboo poles) were provided regularly in the home cage. Findings indicate richness in the frequency and form of manipulative activities, with juvenile males manipulating the test objects more frequently and exhibiting more goal-directed manipulative activity than adult females. A variety of goal-directed manipulative activities (use of objects to act as ladders, to apply leverage, and to create perches) occurred spontaneously, with some instances involving joint action or social use. These data are consistent with the hypotheses that macaques possess extensive capacities for object exploration and social facilitation, and that an evolutionary history of omnivorous foraging habits correlates positively with the expression of anomalous sensorimotor skills.  相似文献

Both time of day and weather significantly influenced the behavioral activity profile of a captive group of Celebes black apes. There were significant differences when their activity profile was compared to those of stumptail macaques, pigtail macaques, sooty mangabeys and geladas observed under similar conditions. There were, nonetheless several remarkable consistencies, especially among taxonomically related forms. Significant sex differences were also noted for grooming, social interaction rates, self-directed activity, agonistic and sexual behavior. Scores were consistent with data on a second group of black apes and previously reported unusual behavioral categories were confirmed.  相似文献

An eight year old wild caught Cynomolgus monkey was diagnosed as having alkaptonuria, a condition characterized by the passage of a normal-colored urine which darkens upon standing. The underlying cause is the congenital lack of homogentisic acid oxidase with subsequent passage of homogentisic acid in the urine. No other clinical manifestations, such as deposition of pigment in the skin or mucous membranes or development of an ochronitic arthritis, were observed in this animal.  相似文献

The current study evaluates the hypothesis, derived from previous investigations, that alterations in dietary fat and cholesterol influence the social behavior of monkeys. Subjects were 62 adult male, cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) assigned originally to an investigation of atherosclerosis regression. This study thus involves a secondary analysis of data derived from an investigation conducted for another purpose. Animals were housed for 14 months' in social groups of five individuals each and initially fed a diet very high in saturated fat and cholesterol to induce coronary artery atherosclerosis. Monkeys were then exposed for 28 months to one of three conditions; (1) a moderately high-fat, high-cholesterol diet and an unstable social environment (in which monkeys were switched among groups monthly); (2) a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and an unstable social environment; and (3) a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and a stable social environment. A comparison of animals living in unstable groups revealed that those consuming the low-fat diet exhibited more overt aggression (P < 0.001) and overt submission (P < 0.01) than did monkeys eating the high-fat diet. A second comparison involved only those animals living in stable social units. These monkeys, while consuming the low-fat diet, engaged in more aggression and submission (Ps < 0.05), spent less time in passive body contact or within touching distance (Ps < 0.001), and spent more time alone (P < 0.001) than they had initially while consuming a very high-fat diet. The current investigation is the first on this topic to include measures of social behavior in animals both before and after a reduction in dietary fat. The findings that such a reduction is associated with increased agonism and decreased affiliation may help explain the epidemiologic association in human beings between low or reduced plasma cholesterol concentrations and a high incidence of violence-related mortality. More generally, the data are consistent with the hypothesis that there is a negative feedback adaptation providing for appropriate changes in behavior in response to periodic dietary privation. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Eighteen pigtailed monkeys, all strangers to each other, were placed together in a laboratory compound. Two infants were eliminated from the study shortly after group formation. To determine dominance hierarchy aggressive-submissive interactions were observed among the remaining 16 monkeys during 4 periods covering 5 months of group development. Results suggested that 3 factors were basic determinants of dominance hierarchy: body weight for males, estrus for females, and maturity for both sexes.Aggressive-submissive interactions were far more frequent during Period I, the first hour of group formation, but decreased with stabilization of hierarchical order in subsequent periods.Aggressive-submissive interactions were not evenly distributed among all possible pairs in the group, but tended to involve mostly the high-ranking animals. Also, high-ranking animals concentrated their aggression towards more submissive monkeys of their own rank. Because low ranking animals were involved in fewer aggressive-submissive interactions, their rank determination was difficult. This research was supported by grant No. FR-00166 from the National Institutes of Health, U. Agonistic interactions were recorded in a captive group of wolves (Canis lupus) for a period of 21 months. Seventy-five per cent of all interactions were accounted for by only 4 or less of a possible 28 pairs during any given period of the study. Several animals were involved in very few agonistic interactions, and in many relationships such interactions were absent. Patterns of agonistic interaction alone did not suggest social relationships or an overall social structure applicable to all group members, although some evidence of a dominance hierarchy was found. Patterns of agonistic interactions were shown to involve several independent dimensions in different relationships. Further details of an underlying social organization are likely to emerge only from long-term studies which examine several dimensions of, and the interrelations between, a wide range of social interactions.  相似文献

Background A focal hypointense intracranial lesion was detected by magnetic resonance imaging in the right caudal occipital lobe of the cerebrum in an asymptomatic cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis). Results Following euthanasia, gross evaluation of the lesion revealed a 1 cm diameter, wedge‐shaped intracranial cavitation without apparent communication with the ventricles. Histologically, the lesion was lined by ciliated cuboidal to low columnar epithelium that showed immunopositivity for cytokeratin, S‐100, and GFAP. Conclusion Based upon the gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical findings, this lesion was classified as an ependymal cyst. In the human patients, ependymal cysts are benign, non‐infectious, non‐inflammatory lesions of the central nervous system that are believed to originate from aberrant migration of ependymal cells during development. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an ependymal cyst in a non‐rodent veterinary species and the first report of a benign intracranial cyst of any classification in a non‐human primate.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether various behavioral and hormonal markers obtained in individually housed monkeys would be predictive of social rank following group housing. Body weight, serum cortisol and testosterone levels, and locomotor activity in an open-field apparatus were examined in 20 experimentally naive male cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) while they were individually housed. It was hypothesized that eventual subordinate monkeys would have higher cortisol levels and increased locomotor activity scores. These monkeys were then placed in social groups of four (five pens of four monkeys), and social rank was determined based on outcomes of dyadic agonistic encounters. Body weight correlated significantly with eventual social rank. In general, the heavier the monkey the higher the social rank. Locomotor activity in an open-field apparatus following administration of a low dose of cocaine (0.01 mg/kg, i.v.), which has been shown to increase CNS dopamine, correlated with eventual social rank such that individually housed monkeys with high levels of locomotion were more likely to become subordinate. Serum cortisol and testosterone levels failed to correlate with eventual social rank. Hypothalamic-pituitary feedback sensitivity and adrenal responsiveness were examined by measuring cortisol levels after administration of dexamethasone and following ACTH challenge. Cortisol responses in these tests were not associated with eventual social rank. These results suggest that, in addition to body weight, the level of reactivity in a novel environment after administration of a low dose of cocaine is a potential trait marker for social rank. This trait is apparently not associated with hormone levels, but may involve other CNS mechanisms.  相似文献

An ameloblastic odontoma occurred in an adult cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis). The neoplasm involved the upper left maxilla as a disfiguring, fleshy growth. The tissue and cellular changes were consistent with an ameloblastic odontoma which is rare in man, nonhuman primates (NHP), and other vertebrate animals. The monkey was one of 50 adult, single-caged housed cynomolgus monkeys. No additional clinical signs of disease were present. Hematology and serum chemistries were within normal limits. There have been three reports in the literature of ameloblastic odontomas in NHP; however, this is the first reported case of an ameloblastic odontoma in a cynomolgus monkey.  相似文献

The degree of aggressive intensity, the degree of contest asymmetry and the development of conciliatory patterns were studied in a captive group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). The state of equilibrium among these components varied according to relatedness of interacting individuals, the observed variations being analogous to those found in interspecific comparisons. It is concluded that the relations linking these components result from epigenetic processes which govern the emergence of a social organization.  相似文献
