The future of C4 research--maize, Flaveria or Cleome? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
C4 photosynthesis has evolved multiple times among the angiosperms: the spatial rearrangement of the photosynthetic apparatus, combined with alterations to the leaf structure, allows CO2 to be concentrated around Rubisco. Higher CO2 concentrations at Rubisco decrease the rate of oxygenation and therefore reduce the amount of energy lost through photorespiration. C4 plants are particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions because they can sustain higher rates of net photosynthesis; they also represent some of our most productive crops. To date, most progress in identifying genes crucial for C4 photosynthesis has been made using maize and Flaveria. We propose that Cleome, the most closely related genus containing C4 species to the C3 model Arabidopsis, be used together with Arabidopsis resources to accelerate our progress in elucidating the genetic basis of C4 photosynthesis. 相似文献

Podophyllum peltatum, was reexamined for its potential use in the commercial production of podophyllotoxin, a lignan used in the semisynthesis of important anticancer drugs. A survey of the natural population of the American mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum, was conducted in order to identify high-yielding genotypes. Plants were collected from the eastern and central United States. The lignan content of leaf blades and rhizome material of the collected specimens was characterized by aqueous extraction followed by HPLC analysis. Podophyllotoxin and α-peltatin appeared most prominently among the lignans obtained. Leaf blades were generally richer in podophyllotoxin than rhizomes. Several high-yielding accessions were identified, the blades of which contained 4.0–5.6% podophyllotoxin. A negative correlation was observed between podophyllotoxin and peltatin content in the blades. The combination of high biosynthetic capacity and preferential accumulation of podophyllotoxin in leaves of mayapple makesthis plant an excellent candidate for agricultural production of podophyllotoxin. 相似文献

Developing crops that are better adapted to abiotic stresses is important for food production in many parts of the world today. Anticipated changes in climate and its variability, particularly extreme temperatures and changes in rainfall, are expected to make crop improvement even more crucial for food production. Here, we review two key biotechnology approaches, molecular breeding and genetic engineering, and their integration with conventional breeding to develop crops that are more tolerant of abiotic stresses. In addition to a multidisciplinary approach, we also examine some constraints that need to be overcome to realize the full potential of agricultural biotechnology for sustainable crop production to meet the demands of a projected world population of nine billion in 2050. 相似文献

Seagrass habitats are being lost throughout the world and the invasive alga C. taxifolia has often been implicated in seagrass declines. Although C. taxifolia can impact a variety of species, evidence for its effects on seagrasses is largely correlative. This study combined observational studies and manipulative experiments done over many years to test hypotheses about effects of C. taxifolia on two Australian seagrasses, namely Posidonia australis and Zostera capricorni. Results indicated that C. taxifolia is not having adverse impacts on the coverage of these seagrasses in the sites studied. Rather, C. taxifolia appears to be an opportunist, persisting longer and its coverage being greater in previously non-vegetated sediments than amongst seagrasses. C. taxifolia co-existed with P. australis and did not cause reductions in the cover of the seagrass. Outcomes of experimental manipulations of C. taxifolia amongst Z. capriconi were less clear due to losses of Z. capriconi in all plots, regardless of the presence of C. taxifolia. It was possible that C. taxifolia may have enhanced the decline in canopy cover of Z. capricorni, but the presence of alga did not alter the final fate of Z. capricorni. There was also no evidence that long-term areal coverage of P. australis or Z. capriconi has been affected by the introduction of C. taxifolia in the embayments studied. A review of literature on effects of species of Caulerpa on seagrasses provided limited experimental evidence for negative impacts of this genus on seagrass abundance. 相似文献

From being a comparative concept in pre-Darwinian times, it became a historical concept, strictly signifying a common evolutionary origin for either anatomical structures or genes. Steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) are produced following the general steroid biosynthesis pathway, starting from acetyl-coenzyme A and followed by the intermediates mevalonic acid, squalene, cycloartenol, and cholesterol. α-Chaconine and α-solanine are the main SGAs of the cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum), whereas many other SGAs are known in the wild potato species. Low concentrations of SGAs improve the taste of potato, but concentrations greater than 200 mg/kg can have toxic effects on animals and humans. SGAs have antimicrobial activity and confer resistance to some insects, but many such pests of potato are not greatly affected. Certain environmental conditions and wounding enhance SGA accumulation in tubers in the field and storage. Low production of SGAs is a dominant character inherited in a relatively simple manner and can be selected for in potato-breeding programs, whereas the use of wild potato germplasm tends to increase the SGA accumulation in the breeding lines. Further efforts are likely to be directed toward the reduction of the SGA content in the edible potato products through breeding and biotechnological methodologies, whereas potato genotypes with high SGA production may be developed for use in the pharmaceutical industry. 相似文献

Size-asymmetric competition, in which larger plants obtain a disproportionally larger share of contested resources, can be applied in agriculture to suppress weeds by increasing crop density and spatial uniformity, as these practices enhance the initial size-asymmetric competitive advantages of crop seedlings over weed seedlings early in the growing season. We do not yet know how agronomic factors influence weed suppression at high crop density. We performed a field experiment to ask how crop density, spatial pattern and irrigation interact to influence weed suppression and grain yield in semi-arid croplands. The experimental was a factorial design with 4 factors: wheat cultivar (Ningchun4, Xihan2), irrigation level (control, irrigated), sowing density (low, 196 seeds m−2; moderate, 400 seeds m-2; high, 625 seeds m−2), and spatial sowing pattern (rows, uniform). Weed growth was effectively suppressed by increased crop density and spatial uniformity. Effects of crop density on weed suppression and grain yield were more pronounced in the uniform pattern than in crop rows. Weed biomass was 55.7% lower and grain yield increased 29.7% higher in the high density uniform pattern compared to the low density and row pattern. Crop density interacted with cultivar in determining both weed biomass and grain yield, potentially reflecting different traits regulating crop competitive ability. Irrigation and crop density had additive effects on weed biomass but interacted to influence grain yield. Our findings support the idea that increased crop density and spatial uniformity can make a valuable and environmentally friendly contribution to weed control in wheat, reducing the need for chemical or mechanical weed control. We need a better understanding of the interactions among climate, agricultural management and crop genotype to improve our ability to effectively suppress weeds with high crop density and spatial uniformity. 相似文献

The embodied human subject is dynamically connected to his or her historico-sociocultural context, the soil from which a person’s psyche is nourished as multiplex meanings are absorbed and enable personal development. In each culture certain towering artistic works embody this perspective. The Dream of the Red Chamber introduces Jia Bao-yu—a scion of the prestigious Jia family—and his relationships with a large cast of characters. Bao-yu is controversial but, at the time of the family’s tragic collapse, he can be seen as embodying a spiritual struggle in which his instinct, nature, sensitivity, and creativity are grounded in his transcendent relationship with a fragment of the world stone, an eternal source of energy and creativity. We are invited to draw on a metaphysical level of thought to consider his struggles with man-made hierarchies and a situated historico-sociocultural order in such a way as to live out his spiritual being. As such, the novel is closely relevant to questions of spirituality in bioethics. Through personal experiences, passions, creativity, and relationships with others, the body is inscribed, forming the soul, which may be misconstrued (for instance, through a medical or Cartesian reformulation of events) but which can be seen as the site of ethical and spiritual thought. 相似文献

Larinus curtus Hochhuth (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was first introduced into the western United States from Greece for the biological control of yellow starthistle (YST), Centaurea solstitialis L., in 1992. The discovery of L. curtus adults in the open flowerheads of safflower (SF), Carthamus tinctorius L., near Lewiston, Idaho in 2007 suggested this weevil might be expanding its host range to include a non-target crop species closely related to YST. In 2008 field plots near the 2007 observation site, 92 L. curtus adults fed in open SF flowerheads (pollen feeding and minor feeding on corolla tubes). No eggs were found in the ovarioles of 19 pollen-feeding females. No eggs, larvae, or evidence of larval feeding were detected in 39 tagged SF capitula, and no adults emerged from approximately 7,135 post-flowering SF capitula. These collective results are not indicative of an expanding developmental host-range of L. curtus. Also, they are consistent with pre-release host-specificity test results. 相似文献

The cancer stem cells (CSC) hypothesis represents a pathological extrapolation of the physiological concept of embryonic and somatic stem cells. In its initial definition, it encompassed the hypothesis of a qualitatively distinct population of immortal cancer cells originating from somatic stem cells, which generate in xenotransplants by a deterministic irreversible process, the hierarchy of more differentiated finite lifespan derived cells, which constitute, themselves, the bulk of the cancer. These CSC would express specific biomarkers and gene expressions related to chemo- and radioresistance, stemness, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, etc. No convincing congruence of several of these properties in one cell population has been demonstrated. The concept has greatly evolved with time and with different authors (“the plasticity of cancer stem cells”), leading to a minimal definition of cells generating a hierarchy of derived cells. In this article these concepts are analyzed. It is proposed that stemness is a property, more or less reversible, a hallmark of some cells at some time in a cancer cell population, as immortality, dormancy, chemo- or radioresistance, epithelial–mesenchymal transition etc. These phenotypic properties represent the result of independent, linked, or more or less congruent, genetic, epigenetic, or signaling programs. 相似文献

Caryopsis and spikelet fork remains of Dasypyrum villosum (L.) Coss. & Durieu ex P. Candargy have been recovered from a Hallstatt period archaeobotanical assemblage (ca. 900/800–450 cal. bc) in western Hungary (Carpathian basin). The presence of D. villosum has not been reported previously from any Hungarian archaeological sites, however there are accounts of its possible occurrence from the Neolithic, the Bronze and Iron Age in northern Serbia. The exact identification of the species has been hindered by its morphological similarity to wild rye and wheat species, as well as to Secale cereale L. and Triticum timopheevii Zhuk. ssp. timopheevii. D. villosum has been found growing at seven locations in Hungary during the past 100 years. Most of these occurrences do not exist today, and the species is not considered indigenous to the present Hungarian flora. The new finds of this species from an Iron Age feature dated to 702–696 cal. bc in western Hungary leave doubts as to whether it is indigenous or not, and should encourage archaeobotanists to consider the possibility of the occurrence of this species on other sites. 相似文献

Summary The effects of soil water deficits and air vapour pressure deficits on stomatal conductance of tomato leaves were analysed separately under field conditions in central Portugal. Three conditions were created: low soil and air humidity (A), high soil and air humidity (B) and low soil but high air humidity (C). The results show that the effect of air vapour pressure deficit on stomatal behaviour is more important than the effect of soil water deficit when the predawn leaf water potential is above –0.4 MPa. 相似文献

Owing to the exceptional intracellular distribution and the heterogeneous expression pattern during transformation and metastasis in various tumors, the EF-hand calcium-binding protein S100A2 attracts increasing attention. Unlike the majority of S100 proteins, S100A2 expression is downregulated in many cancers and the loss in nuclear expression has been associated with poor prognosis. On the other hand, S100A2 is upregulated in some cancers. This mini review highlights the general characteristics of S100A2 and discusses recent findings on its putative functional implication as a suppressor or promoter in cancerogenesis. 相似文献
