The effect of mixed intercropping of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), compared to monocrop cultivation, on the yield and crop-N dynamics was studied in a 4-yr field experiment using 15N-isotope dilution technique. Crops were grown with or without the supply of 5 g 15N-labeled N m-2. The effect of intercropping on the dry matter and N yields, competition for inorganic N among the intercrop components, symbiotic fixation in pea and N transfer from pea to barley were determined. As an average of four years the grain yields were similar in monocropped pea, monocropped and fertilized barley and the intercrop without N fertilizer supply. Nitrogen fertilization did not influence the intercrop yield, but decreased the proportion of pea in the yield. Relative yield totals (RYT) showed that the environmental sources for plant growth were used from 12 to 31% more efficiently by the intercrop than by the monocrops, and N fertilization decreased RYT-values. Intercrop yields were less stable than monocrop barley yields, but more stable than the yield of monocropped pea. Barley competed strongly for soil and fertilizer N in the intercrop, and was up to 30 times more competitive than pea for inorganic N. Consequently, barley obtained a more than proportionate share of the inorganic N in the intercrop. At maturity the total recovery of fertilizer N was not significantly different between crops, averaging 65% of the supplied N. The fertilizer N recovered in pea constituted only 9% of total fertilizer-N recovery in the intercrop. The amount of symbiotic N2 fixation in the intercrop was less than expected from its composition and the fixation in monocrop. This indicates that the competition from barley had a negative effect on the fixation, perhaps via shading. At maturity, the average amount of N2 fixation was 17.7 g N m-2 in the monocrop and 5.1 g N m-2 in the intercropped pea. A higher proportion of total N in pea was derived from N2 fixation in the intercrop than in the monocrop, on average 82% and 62%, respectively. The 15N enrichment of intercropped barley tended to be slightly lower than of monocropped barley, although not significantly. Consequently, there was no evidence for pea N being transferred to barley. The intercropping advantage in the pea-barley intercrop is mainly due to the complimentary use of soil inorganic and atmospheric N sources by the intercrop components, resulting in reduced competition for inorganic N, rather than a facilitative effect, in which symbiotically fixed N2 is made available to barley.Abbreviations MC monocrop - IC intercrop - PMC pea monocrop - BMC barley monocrop - PIC pea in intercrop - BIC barley in intercrop  相似文献

Managing the crop residue particle size has the potential to affect N conservation in agricultural systems. We investigated the influence of barley (Hordeum vulgare) and pea (Pisum sativum) crop residue particle size on N mineralization and denitrification in two laboratory experiments. Experiment 1: 15N-labelled ground (3 mm) and cut (25 mm) barley residue, and microcrystalline cellulose+glucose were mixed into a sandy loam soil with additional inorganic N. Experiment 2: inorganic15 N and C2H2 were added to soils with barley and pea material after 3, 26, and 109 days for measuring gross N mineralization and denitrification.Net N immobilization over 60 days in Experiment 1 cumulated to 63 mg N kg-1 soil (ground barley), 42 (cut barley), and 122 (cellulose+glucose). More N was seemingly net mineralized from ground barley (3.3 mg N kg-1 soil) than from cut barley (2.7 mg N kg-1 soil). Microbial biomass peaked at day 4 with the barley treatments and at day 14 with the cellulose+glucose whereafter the biomass leveled out at values 79 mg C kg-1 (ground), 104 (cut), and 242 (cellulose+glucose) higher than for the control soil. Microbial growth yields were similar for the two barley treatments, ca. 60 mg C g-1 substrate C added, which was lower than the 142 mg C g-1 C added with cellulose+glucose. This suggests that the 75% (w/w) holocelluloses and sugars contained with the barley material remained physically protected despite grinding. In Experiment 2 gross mineralization on day 3 was 4.8 mg N kg-1 d-1 with ground pea, twice as much as for all other treatments. On day 26 the treatment with ground barley had the greatest gross N mineralization. In static cores ground barley denitrified 11-fold more than did cut barley, whereas denitrification was similar for the two pea treatments. In suspensions denitrification was similar for the two treatments both with barley and pea residue. We conclude that the higher microbial activity associated with the initial decomposition of ground plant material is due to a more intimate plant residue-soil contact. On the long term, grinding the plant residues has no significant effect on N dynamics.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted using15N methodology to study the effect of cultivation of faba bean (Vicia faba L.), pea (Pisum sativum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) on the N status of soil and their residual N effect on two succeeding cereals (sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) followed by barley). Faba bean, pea and barley took up 29.6, 34.5 and 53.0 kg N ha–1 from the soil, but returned to soil through roots only 11.3, 10.8 and 5.7 kg N ha–1, respectively. Hence, removal of faba bean, pea and barley straw resulted in a N-balance of about –18, –24, and –47 kg ha–1 respectively. A soil nitrogen conserving effect was observed following the cultivation of faba bean and pea compared to barley which was of the order of 23 and 18 kg N ha–1, respectively. Cultivation of legumes resulted in a significantly higher AN value of the soil compared to barley. However, the AN of the soil following fallow was significantly higher than following legumes, implying that the cultivation of the legumes had depleted the soil less than barley but had not added to the soil N compared to the fallow. The beneficial effect of legume cropping also was reflected in the N yield and dry matter production of the succeeding crops. Cultivation of legumes led to a greater exploitation of soil N by the succeeding crops. Hence, appreciable yield increases observed in the succeeding crops following legumes compared to cereal were due to a N-conserving effect, carry-over of N from the legume residue and to greater uptake of soil N by the succeeding crops when previously cropped to legumes.  相似文献

Soil nitrogen heterogeneity in a Dehesa ecosystem   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The C mineralization and N transformations during the decomposition of sunflower stalks (Helianthus annuus L.) and wheat straw (Triticum aestivum L.) with and without addition of (NH4)2SO4 (27.53 atom% 15N) were studied in a Vertisol. Soil samples were incubated under aerobic conditions for 224 days at 22 °C. The plant residues were added at a rate of 5.2 g kg-1 soil. Nitrogen was applied at a rate of 50.7 mg N kg-1 soil. Carbon dioxide emission and inorganic N content in soil were periodically determined. Gross N immobilization and remineralization were calculated on the basis of the isotopic dilution technique. At the end of the incubation period a 15N balance was established. Respectively, 68 and 45% of the applied residue-C mineralized from the sunflower stalks and wheat straw after 224 days. Both crop residues caused losses of up to 25% of added 15N after 224 days of incubation. These 15N losses were about three times larger than in the control soil, and were probably due to denitrification. The net immobilization of soil derived N following residue incorporation was largest in the case of wheat straw, depleting all soil inorganic N. In the wheat straw treatment with added (NH4)2SO4 soil inorganic N remained available, resulting in an enhanced initial C mineralization and N immobilization compared to the treatment without added N. In the case of the sunflower stalks, the high inorganic N content of the stalks suppressed the effects of N addition on C mineralization and N immobilization/mineralization. Gross N immobilization amounted to 31.9 and 28.2 mg N g-1 added C after 14 days for wheat straw and sunflower stalks, respectively. At the end of the incubation, about 35% of the newly immobilized N was remineralized in both plant residue treatments. Gross N immobilization plotted against decomposed C suggests that fairly uniform C-N relationships exist during the decomposition of divers C substrates. The results demonstrate that low fertilizer N use efficiencies may be expected in a wheat-sunflower cropping system with incorporation of crop residues, as the fertilizer N applied becomes largely immobilized in the soil organic fraction. A laboratory incubation experiment with 15N labeled root and leaf residues of 3 agroforestry species (Leucaena leucocephala, Dactyladenia barteri and Flemingia macrophylla) was conducted under controlled conditions (25 C) for 56 days to quantify residue C and N mineralization and its relationship with residue quality. No uniform relation was found between the chemical composition of the above and below residues. The leucaena and dactyladenia roots contained more lignin (8 and 26% respectively) and less N (2.0 and 1.0% respectively) than the respective leaves (2 and 13% lignin and 2.9 and 1.4% N, respectively), whereas the differences between the lignin and N contents of the flemingia leaves and roots were not significant (4.6 and 3.0% lignin and 2.63 and 2.68% N, respectively). The leucaena leaves contained more polyphenols than the roots (6.4 and 3.6%), while the polyphenol content of the leaves and roots of the other residues was similar (5.0 and 5.1% for dactyladenia and 4.0 and 3.5% for flemingia).Three patterns of N mineralization could be distinguished. A first pattern, followed by residues producing the highest amounts of CO2, showed an initial immobilization of soil derived N, followed by a net release of both soil and residue derived N after 7 days of incubation. A second pattern, followed by the flemingia leaf residues which produced intermediate amounts of CO2 and had an intermediate quality, showed no significant immobilization of soil derived N, and significant mineralization of residue N. A third pattern, followed by both low quality dactyladenia residues, showed a low release of residue derived N and a continued inmobilization of soil derived N.Residue C mineralization was significantly (p<0.05) correlated with the residue lignin content, C-to-N ratio, and polyphenol-to-N ratio. The proportion of residue N mineralized (immobilized) after 56 days of incubation was significantly correlated with the residue N content (p<0.01) and the C-to-N ratio (p<0.05). The relations were quadratic, rather than linear. The ratio of the proportion of residue N mineralized (immobilized) over the proportion of residue C mineralized after 56 days was highly significantly correlated with the lignin content (p<0.01) and C-to-N (p<0.001), lignin-to-N (p<0.01), polyphenol-to-N (p<0.01) and (lignin+polyphenol)-to-N ratios (p<0.01) in a linear way. This indicates that due to the low availability of the residue C, relatively less N is immobilized for the very low quality residues ((lignin+polyphenol)-to-N ratio: 29.7) than for the residues with a relatively higher quality ((lignin+polyphenol)-to-N ratios between 3.3 and 12.5).  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to test a new approach to the 15N isotope dilution technique for estimating crop N uptake from organic inputs. Soils were pre-labelled with 15N fertiliser and a carbon source. These were then incubated until there was stabilisation of the 15N abundance of the inorganic N pool and resumption of inorganic N concentrations. Residues were then applied to the soils and planted with ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) to determine the nitrogen derived from the residue (Ndfr) using the isotope dilution equations. This method was compared with the direct method, i.e. where 15N-labelled residues were added to the soil and Ndfr in the ryegrass calculated directly. Estimates of percentage nitrogen derived from the residue (%Ndfr) alfalfa (Medicago sativaL.) in the ryegrass, were similar, 22 and 23% for the direct and soil pre-labelling methods, respectively, in the Wechsel sandy loam. Also, estimates of the %Ndfr from soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) residues in the Krumbach sandy loam were similar 34% (direct) and 36% (soil pre-labelling approach). However, in the Seibersdorf clay loam, the %Ndfr from soybean was 49% using the direct method and 61% using the soil pre-labelling method; yet Ndfr from common bean residue was 46% using the direct approach and 40% using the pre-labelling, not significantly different (P > 0.05). The soil pre-labelling approach appears to give realistic values for Ndfr. It was not possible to obtain an estimate of Ndfr using the soil pre-labelling method from the maize residues (Zea mays L.) in two of the soils, as there was no increase in the total N of the ryegrass over the growing period. This was probably due to microbial immobilisation of inorganic N, as a result of the wide C:N ratio of the residue added. The results suggest that the new soil pre-labelling method is feasible and that it is a potentially useful technique for measuring N release from a wide range or organic residues, but it requires further field-testing. Root system dynamics, productivity and N use were studied in inter- and sole crops of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) on a temperate sandy loam. A 32P tracer placed at a depth of 12.5, 37.5, 62.5 or 87.5 cm was employed to determine root system dynamics by sampling crop leaves at 0, 15, 30 and 45 cm lateral distance. 15N addition was used to estimate N2 fixation by pea, using sole cropped barley as reference crop. The Land Equivalent Ratio (LER), which is defined as the relative land area under sole crops that is required to produce the yields achieved in intercropping, were used to compare the crop growth in intercrops relative to the respective sole crops. The 32P appearance in leaves revealed that the barley root system grows faster than that of pea. P uptake by the barley root system during early growth stages was approximately 10 days ahead of that of the pea root system in root depth and lateral root distribution. More than 90% of the P uptake by the pea root system was confined to the top 12.5 cm of soil, whereas barley had about 25–30% of tracer P uptake in the 12.5 – 62.5 cm soil layer. Judging from this P uptake, intercropping caused the barley root system to grow deeper and faster lateral root development of both species was observed. Barley accumulated similar amounts of aboveground N when grown as inter- and sole crop, whereas the total aboveground N acquired by pea in the intercrop was only 16% of that acquired in the pea sole crop. The percentage of total aboveground N derived from N2 fixation in sole cropped pea increased from 40% to 80% during the growth period, whereas it was almost constant at 85% in intercropped pea. The total amounts of N2 fixed were 95 and 15 kg N ha–1 in sole cropped and intercropped pea, respectively. Barley was the dominant component of the pea-barley intercrop, obtaining 90% of its sole crop yield, while pea produced only 15% of the grains of a sole crop pea. Intercropping of pea and barley improved the utilization of plant growth resources (LER > 1) as compared to sole crops. Root system distribution in time and space can partly explain interspecific competition. The 32P methodology proved to be a valuable tool for determining root dynamics in intercropping systems.  相似文献

The application of herbicides has induced symptoms of nutrient deficiencies under some circumstances. This glasshouse study examined the effect of chlorsulfuron on the uptake and utilization of copper (Cu) in four cultivars of wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Kulin, Cranbrook, Gamenya and Bodallin) on a Cu-responsive soil. Application of chlorsulfuron depressed the concentration of Cu in wheat plants receiving either inadequate or adequate Cu. In plants with inadequate Cu supply, chlorsulfuron increased the severity of Cu deficiency. Shoot weight was markedly decreased by chlorsulfuron at all levels of Cu, through decreasing the number of tillers and the elongation of leaves. This decreased growth of shoots occurred prior to the effect on Cu concentration in tissues. The retranslocation of Cu in old tissues over time was unaffected by chlorsulfuron. In all wheat cultivars, the decreased growth of shoots were correlated with the concentration of Cu in the youngest fully emerged leaf blade with critical levels of 1.6−1.7 at day 25 and 0.9−1.0 μg g−1 d. wt. at day 60. The application of chlorsulfuron tended to increase the critical level at day 25 but not at day 60. In addition, Kulin seems to be most, and Cranbrook least, sensitive to chlorsulfuron. This sensitivity was associated with the sensitivity of the cultivars to Cu deficiency. It is suggested that chlorsulfuron application induces Cu deficiency in wheat plants mainly due to effects on the uptake of Cu. Summary A field experiment on N turnover in rotations of groundnut, sorghum and pigeonpea crops was conducted in an Indian Alfisol during 1978–80.15N-labelled urea N was applied @ 40 kg ha–1 in 1978. In the first year, the groundnut utilized 19.5% of the applied labelled N, sorghum 25.5%, and pigeon pea 10.3%. More fertilizer N was removed through weeding than by crop uptake in sorghum and pigeon pea. The fertilizer N left behind in soil upto 40 cm depth was 44.4% in groundnut plots, 35.1% in sorghum plots and 40.1% in pigeon pea plots. The uptake in 1979 of the residual fertilizer N in the soil was 8.9% in sorghum, 8.3% in groundnut and 2.8% in pigeon pea. In 1980, it declined to less than 2% for pigeon pea and groundnut and to about 4% for sorghum.A balance sheet drawn at the end of each rotation showed that about 51.3% of the applied labelled N was accounted for in groundnut-sorghum-pigeon pea rotation, 70.9% in sorghumpigeon pea-groundnut, and 43.5% in pigeon pea-groundnut-sorghum.  相似文献

Silvopastoral systems comprise part of the continued expansion of conifer plantings on grassland in New Zealand. Greater understanding of the short term dynamics of soil organic P in such systems will further our knowledge about soil carbon and phosphorus relationships which will enable improved nutrient management in the field. A glasshouse experiment was carried out to examine the short-term effects (36 weeks) of combinations of radiata pine (Pinus radiata), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) grown in the same soil type with a range of carbon (C) and phosphorus (P) levels on plant P uptake and the specific mineralisation rate (SMR). The SMR is defined as net mineralisation rate (i.e. gross mineralisation less microbial and geochemical uptake) and calculated from organic P decline as a percentage of organic P in the original soil before planting. This included an investigation of the effect of tree ectomycorrhizal (EM) hyphae on soil organic P. Plant P uptake was positively correlated with water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and SMR, which in turn was closely related to soil C levels. The soils with high WSOC and C levels (which also contained high levels of labile inorganic and organic P) enabled high P uptake. Although P uptake was the greatest under radiata pine, the trees tended to deplete inorganic P to a lesser extent than the forages. When tree and forage species were combined, P uptake by forages was similar to when the forages were grown alone. The various soil and plant treatments significantly affected SMR. The two low C soils, showed the greatest organic P mineralisation while a high C soil, which contained significant levels of bicarbonate extracted inorganic P at planting and was under a long established undisturbed pasture, showed the least mineralisation. Trees grown alone showed the greatest SMR, EM hyphae and trees with lucerne were slightly lower than trees alone, while the forages showed the lowest SMR. The findings of this study showed that changes in organic P are strongly influenced by interactions between plant species (radiata pine, lucerne, ryegrass) and soil properties as determined by land use and management.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation was measured in monocropped sweet-blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius), lupin intercropped with two ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cultivars or with oats (Avena sativa) on an Andosol soil, using the 15N isotope dilution method. At 117 days after planting and at a mean temperature below 10°C, monocropped lupin derived an average of 92% or 195 kg N ha−1 of its N from N2 fixation. Intercropping lupin with cereals increased (p<0.05) the percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 (% Ndfa) to a mean of 96%. Compared to the monocropped, total N fixed per hectare in intercropped lupin declined approximately 50%, in line with the decrease in seeding rate and dry matter yield. With these high values of N2 fixation, selection of the reference crop was not a problem; all the cereals, intercropped or grown singly produced similar estimates of N2 fixed in lupin. It was deduced from the 15N data that significant N transfer occurred from lupin to intercropped Italian ryegrass but not to intercropped Westerwoldian ryegrass or to oats. Doubling the 15N fertilizer rate from 30 to 60 kg N ha−1 decreased % Ndfa to 86% (p<0.05), but total N fixed was unaltered. These results indicate that lupin has a high potential for N2 fixation at low temperatures, and can maintain higher rates of N2 fixation in soils of high N than many other forage and pasture legumes.  相似文献

About 50–60% of dairy cattle slurry nitrogen is ammonium N. Part of the ammonium N in cattle slurry is immobilised due to microbial decomposition of organic matter in the slurry after application to soil. The immobilisation and the remineralisation influence the fertiliser value of slurry N and the amount of organic N that is retained in soil. The immobilisation and the remineralisation of 15 N-labelled dairy cattle slurry NH4-N were studied through three growing seasons after spring application under temperate conditions. Effects of slurry distribution (mixing, layer incorporation, injection, surface-banding) and extra litter straw in the slurry on the plant utilisation of labelled NH4-N from slurry were studied and compared to the utilisation of 15N-labelled mineral fertiliser. The initial immobilisation of slurry N was influenced by the slurry distribution in soil. More N was immobilised when the slurry was mixed with soil. Surface-banding of slurry resulted in significant volatilisation losses and less residual 15N in soil. Much more N was immobilised after slurry incorporation than after mineral fertiliser application. After 2.5 years the recovery of labelled N in soil (0–25 cm) was 46% for slurry mixed with soil, 42% for injected slurry, 22% for surface-banded slurry and 24% for mineral fertiliser N. The total N uptake in a ryegrass cover crop was 5–10 kg N/ha higher in the autumn after spring-application of cattle slurry (100–120 kg NH4-N/ha) compared to the mineral fertiliser N reference, but the immobilised slurry N (labelled N) only contributed little to the extra N uptake in the autumn. Even in the second autumn after slurry application there was an extra N uptake in the cover crop (0–10 kg N/ha). The residual effect of the cattle slurry on spring barley N uptake was insignificant in the year after slurry application (equivalent to 3% of total slurry N). Eighteen months after application, 13% of the residual 15N in soil was found in microbial biomass whether it derived from slurry or mineral fertiliser, but the remineralisation rate (% crop removal of residual 15N) was higher for fertiliser- than for slurry-derived N, except after surface-banding. Extra litter straw in the slurry had a negligible influence on the residual N effects in the year after application. It is concluded that a significant part of the organic N retained in soil after cattle slurry application is derived from immobilised ammonium N, but already a few months after application immobilised N is stabilised and only slowly released. The immobilised N has negligible influence on the residual N effect of cattle slurry in the first years after slurry application, and mainly contributes to the long-term accumulation of organic N in soil together with part of the organic slurry N. Under humid temperate conditions the residual N effects of the manure can only be optimally utilised when soil is also covered by plants in the autumn, because a significant part of the residual N is released in the autumn, and there is a higher risk of N leaching losses on soils that receive cattle slurry regularly compared to soils receiving only mineral N fertilisers.  相似文献

An earlier paper (Macdonald et al., 1997; J. Agric. Sci. (Cambridge) 129, 125) presented data from a series of field experiments in which 15N-labelled fertilizers were applied in spring to winter wheat, winter oilseed rape, potatoes, sugar beet and spring beans grown on four different soils in SE England. Part of this N was retained in the soil and some remained in crop residues on the soil surface when the crop was harvested. In all cases the majority of this labelled N remained in organic form. In the present paper we describe experiments designed to follow the fate of this `residual' 15N over the next 2 years (termed the first and second residual years) and measure its value to subsequent cereal crops. Averaging over all of the initial crops and soils, 6.3% of this `residual' 15N was taken up during the first residual year when the following crop was winter wheat and significantly less (5.5%) if it was spring barley. In the second year after the original application, a further 2.1% was recovered, this time by winter barley. Labelled N remaining after potatoes and sugar beet was more available to the first residual crop than that remaining after oilseed rape or winter wheat. By the second residual year, this difference had almost disappeared. The availability to subsequent crops of the labelled N remaining in or on the soil at harvest of the application year decreased in the order: silty clay loam>sandy loam>chalky loam>heavy clay. In most cases, only a small proportion of the residual fertilizer N available for plant uptake was recovered by the subsequent crop, indicating poor synchrony between the mineralization of 15N-labelled organic residues and crop N uptake. Averaging over all soils and crops, 22% of the labelled N applied as fertilizer was lost (i.e., unaccounted for in harvested crop and soil to a depth of 100 cm) by harvest in the year of application, rising to 34% at harvest of the first residual year and to 35% in the second residual year. In the first residual year, losses of labelled N were much greater after spring beans than after any of the other crops.  相似文献

Crop response, tree biomass production and changes in soil fertility characteristics were monitored in a long-term (1986–2002) alley-cropping trial in Ibadan, Nigeria. The systems included two alley cropping systems with Leucaena leucocephala and Senna siamea on the one hand and a control (no-trees) system on the other hand, all cropped annually with a maize–cowpea rotation. All systems had a plus and minus fertilizer treatment. Over the years, the annual biomass return through tree prunings declined steadily, but more drastically for Leucaena than for Senna. In 2002, the nitrogen contribution from Leucaena residues stabilized at about 200 kg N/ha/year, while the corresponding value for Senna was about 160 kg N/ha/year. On average, the four Leucaena prunings were more equal in biomass as well as in amounts of N, P and cations, while the first Sennapruning was always contributing up to 60% of the annual biomass or nutrient return. Maize crop yields declined steadily in all treatments, but the least so in the Senna + fertilizer treatment where in 2002 still 2.2 tonnes/ha of maize were obtained. Nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency was usually higher in the Senna treatment compared to the control or the Leucaena treatment. Added benefits due to the combined use of fertilizer N and organic matter additions were observed only for the Sennatreatment and only in the last 6 years. At all other times, they remained absent or were even negative in the Leucaenatreatments for the first 3 years. Most chemical soil fertility parameters decreased in all the treatments, but less so in the alley cropping systems. The presence of trees had a positive effect on remaining carbon stocks, while they were reduced compared to the 1986 data. Trees had a positive effect on the maintenance of exchangeable cations in the top soil. Exchangeable Ca, Mg and K – and hence ECEC – were only slightly reduced after 16 years of cropping in the tree-based systems, and even increased in the Senna treatments. In the control treatments, values for all these parameters reduced to 50% or less of the original values after 16 years. All the above points to the Senna-based alley system with fertilizers as the more resilient one. This is reflected in all soil fertility parameters, in added benefits due to the combined use of fertilizer nitrogen and organic residue application and in a more stable maize yield over the years, averaging 2.8 tonnes/ha with maximal deviations from the average not exceeding 21%.  相似文献

Studies of the effects of precipitation on litter decomposition and nitrogen mineralization in arid and semiarid environments have demonstrated contradictory results. We conducted a manipulative experiment with rainout shelters in the semiarid Patagonian steppe, aimed at assessing the direct effects of water availability on litter decomposition and net nitrogen mineralization while isolating the indirect effects. We created four levels of precipitation input: control and three levels (30, 55 and 80%) of precipitation interception and we examined litter decomposition and nutrient release of a dominant grass species, Stipa speciosa, inorganic soil nitrogen, and in situ net nitrogen mineralization over two consecutive years. Litter decomposition rates (k, year−1) varied significantly (P < 0.001) among precipitation interception treatments and were positively correlated with incoming annual precipitation (APPT, mm/year) (k = 0.0007 × APPT + 0.137). In contrast, net N mineralization was not correlated with incoming precipitation. Soil NO3 significantly decreased with increasing precipitation input, whereas soil NH4+ concentration did not differ among precipitation interception treatments. Controls of water input on litter decomposition appear to be different from controls on N mineralization in the semiarid Patagonian steppe. We suggest that although water availability affects both the mineralization of C and N, it differentially affects the movement and fate of the inorganic products. A consequence of the accumulation of inorganic N during dry episodes is that periods of maximum water and soil nutrient availability may occur at different times. This asynchrony in the availability of N and water in the soil may explain the observed lags in the response of primary production to increases in water availability.  相似文献

The residual N contribution from faba bean (Vicia faba L.), pea (Pisum sativum L.) and white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) to microbial biomass and subsequent wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) was studied in a greenhouse experiment. The grain legumes were 15N labelled in situ with a stem feeding method before incorporated into the soil, which enables the determination of N rhizodeposition. Wheat and rape were subsequently grown on the soil containing the grain legume residues (incl. 15N-labelled rhizodeposits) and were harvested either twice at flowering and at maturity or once at maturity, respectively. The average total N uptake of the subsequent crops was influenced by the legume used as precrop and was determined by the residue N input and the N2-fixation capacity of the legume species. The succeeding crops recovered 8.6–12.1% of the residue N at maturity. Similar patterns were found for the microbial biomass, which recovered 8.2–10.6% of the residue N. Wheat and rape recovered about the same amount of residue N. The absolute contribution of soil derived N to the subsequent crops was similar in all treatments and averaged 149 mg N pot–1 at maturity. At flowering 17–23% of the residue derived N was recovered in the subsequent wheat and in the microbial biomass; 70% of the residue N was recovered in the microbial biomass in the flowering stage and decreased to about 50% at maturity. In contrast, the recovery in wheat and rape constituted only 30% at flowering and increased to 50% at maturity in all treatments, indicating that the residual N uptake by the subsequent wheat was apparently supplied by mobilisation of residue N temporarily immobilised in the microbial biomass.  相似文献

In an earlier paper we presented data from an experiment in which nitrogen-15-labelled fertilizer was applied in spring to barley on the Rothamsted long-term Spring Barley Experiment, at rates of 48, 96 or 144 kg N ha–1. A substantial proportion (between 28 and 39%) of this 15N remained in the soil (0–70 cm) and stubble at harvest, mostly in organic form. The present paper follows the fate of this `residual' 15N over the following 2 years. Small amounts of `residual' 15N were recovered in the following two spring barley crops; 8% in the first and 3% in the second. The overall loss of `residual' 15N (i.e. `residual' 15N not recovered in crops and soil to a depth of 70 cm) over the 2 years was 23%. This is equivalent to just 8% of the total 15N originally applied. There was surprisingly little difference in the behaviour of the `residual' 15N in soils containing very different quantities of soil organic matter.  相似文献

Background and aims

Crop species grown in a diversified crop rotation can influence soil N dynamics to varying degrees due to differences in the quantity and quality of the residues returned to the soil. The aim of this study was to quantify the contribution of N rhizodeposition by canola (Brassica napus L.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.) to the crop residue N balance and soil inorganic N pool.

Methods

Canola and pea were grown in a soil-sand mixture and were subject to cotton-wick 15N labeling in a greenhouse experiment. Nitrogen-15 recovered in the soil and roots were used to estimate N rhizodeposition.

Results

Belowground N, including root N and N rhizodeposits, comprised 70 % and 61 % of total crop residue N for canola and pea, respectively. Canola released the greatest amount of total root-derived N to the soil, which was related to greater root biomass production by canola. However, root-derived N in the soil inorganic N pool was greater under pea (13 %) than canola (4 %).

Conclusions

Our results show a significant belowground N contribution to total crop residue from pea and canola. Further investigation is required to determine whether input of the more labile N rhizodeposits of pea improves soil N supply to succeeding crops or increases the potential for N loss from the soil system relative to canola.  相似文献
