Studies have been made on motile and phagocytic activity, osmotic fragility of neutrophilic leucocytes, as well as on their glycogen content in dogs of various age groups. Within the first 3 months of postnatal life of animals (especially during the 1st month), functional activity of leucocytes is lower than in adult dogs. With respect to functional activity of leucocytes, 6-month puppies stand closer to adult dogs, although exhibit some differences from the latter.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted on dogs aged 18-22 days, 2-3 month-old and adult dogs. Arterial blood pressure, cardiac output, heart rate and total peripheral resistance during the infusion of synthetic angiotensin-II-amide in a dose of 2 mug/kg per minute were studied. An increase of arterial pressure in adult dogs during the action of angiotensin-II was connected with the elevation of the total peripheral resistance. An increase of the total peripheral resistance and also of the cardiac output was seen in the puppies. The differences in the degree of increase of the arterial blood pressure in adult dogs and puppies were not marked.  相似文献

The intracellular sodium and potassium concentrations and membrane transport properties for these ions were investigated in red blood cells from newborn puppies and adult dogs. At birth the intracellular concentrations of sodium and potassium are much higher than those found in adult dog red cells. During the first few weeks of life the intracellular concentrations of these ions gradually decrease until the adult level is reached. Changes in the membrane transport properties develop concurrently. The rate of active potassium influx, as measured by ouabain-sensitivity, and the pump to leak ratio are greater in red cells from newborn puppies than in those from adult animals. No ouabain-sensitive sodium efflux could be demonstrated in red cells from older puppies or adult dogs. When either puppy or adult dog red cells are depleted of ATP (by incubation at 37°C with no substrate), potassium permeability increases, and the permeability of the membrane to sodium decreases. The addition of adenosine reverses the effect of depletion.  相似文献

In experiments on 1-day to 3-month-old puppies and adult dogs, studies have been made on the lymph flow from the thoracic duct. Within the first week of postnatal life, the lymph volume was found to be high decreasing gradually in further development. In adult dogs, the volume of the lymph flowing from the thoracic duct per unit of time and per body mass was 3 times lower than that in 1-week-old puppies. Possible mechanisms of these differences are discussed.  相似文献

In 2-9 months dogs the influence was studied of ablation of the hippocampus dorsal area on formation and preservation of conditioned taste aversion (CTA), elaborated by combination of 30% sucrose solution with i.p. injection of 0.28 M LiCl solution. Lesion of the hippocampus dorsal area does not prevent acquisition after the first pairing of conditioned taste aversion in puppies and adult dogs. Heterogeneous influences are observed after hippocampus lesions on the process of CTA extinction in animals of different ages. Acquaintance with conditioned stimulus before CTA acquisition accelerates the process of its extinction in hippocampectomized indiviuals, but less than in animals with an intact hippocampus.  相似文献

Puppy assessments for companion dogs have shown mixed long-term reliability. Temperament is cited among the reasons for surrendering dogs to shelters. A puppy temperament test that reliably predicts adult behavior is one potential way to lower the number of dogs given to shelters. This study used a longitudinal design to assess temperament in puppies from 8 different breeds at 7 weeks old (n = 52) and 6 years old (n = 34) using modified temperament tests, physiological measures, and a follow-up questionnaire. For 7-week-old puppies, results revealed (a) puppy breed was predictable using 3 variables, (b) 4 American Kennel Club breed groups had some validity based on temperament, (c) temperament was variable within litters of puppies, and (d) certain measures of temperament were related to physiological measures (heart rate). Finally, puppy temperament assessments were reliable in predicting the scores of 2 of the 8 adult dog temperament measures. However, overall, the puppy temperament scores were unreliable in predicting adult temperament.  相似文献

Personality, or consistent individual differences in behavior, is well established in studies of dogs. Such consistency implies predictability of behavior, but some recent research suggests that predictability cannot be assumed. In addition, anecdotally, many dog experts believe that ‘puppy tests’ measuring behavior during the first year of a dog''s life are not accurate indicators of subsequent adult behavior. Personality consistency in dogs is an important aspect of human-dog relationships (e.g., when selecting dogs suitable for substance-detection work or placement in a family). Here we perform the first comprehensive meta-analysis of studies reporting estimates of temporal consistency of dog personality. A thorough literature search identified 31 studies suitable for inclusion in our meta-analysis. Overall, we found evidence to suggest substantial consistency (r = 0.43). Furthermore, personality consistency was higher in older dogs, when behavioral assessment intervals were shorter, and when the measurement tool was exactly the same in both assessments. In puppies, aggression and submissiveness were the most consistent dimensions, while responsiveness to training, fearfulness, and sociability were the least consistent dimensions. In adult dogs, there were no dimension-based differences in consistency. There was no difference in personality consistency in dogs tested first as puppies and later as adults (e.g., ‘puppy tests’) versus dogs tested first as puppies and later again as puppies. Finally, there were no differences in consistency between working versus non-working dogs, between behavioral codings versus behavioral ratings, and between aggregate versus single measures. Implications for theory, practice, and future research are discussed.  相似文献

To assess the effect of ischemia on osteocyte survival and longitudinal growth in bone, one forelimb of eight puppies and seven dogs was amputated, perfused with iced Collins solution, maintained at 4 degrees C for 72 hours (78.5 hours total anoxia), and replanted. Five puppies were kept for 1 year to assess bone growth. Undergoing bone labeling on days 1, 8, and 15, the other animals were sacrificed at 22 days to assess osteocyte survival. Osteocytes survived replantation in all dogs and one puppy; most osteocytes died in two puppies. In five long-term puppies, central epiphyseal growth was disturbed, but the peripheral portions maintained nearly normal growth, with almost normal bone length being achieved at 1 year.  相似文献

Studies on behavioural development in domestic dogs are of relevance for matching puppies with the right families, identifying predispositions for behavioural problems at an early stage, and predicting suitability for service dog work, police or military service. The literature is, however, inconsistent regarding the predictive value of tests performed during the socialisation period. Additionally, some practitioners use tests with neonates to complement later assessments for selecting puppies as working dogs, but these have not been validated. We here present longitudinal data on a cohort of Border collies, followed up from neonate age until adulthood. A neonate test was conducted with 99 Border collie puppies aged 2–10 days to assess activity, vocalisations when isolated and sucking force. At the age of 40–50 days, 134 puppies (including 93 tested as neonates) were tested in a puppy test at their breeders'' homes. All dogs were adopted as pet dogs and 50 of them participated in a behavioural test at the age of 1.5 to 2 years with their owners. Linear mixed models found little correspondence between individuals'' behaviour in the neonate, puppy and adult test. Exploratory activity was the only behaviour that was significantly correlated between the puppy and the adult test. We conclude that the predictive validity of early tests for predicting specific behavioural traits in adult pet dogs is limited.  相似文献

Inappropriate behaviors of potential guide dogs (puppies) for the blind and coping behaviors of their adult female raisers (puppy walkers: PWs) were videotaped in their play situation at home from when the puppies were 2-11 or 12 months of age. The frequency of inappropriate behavior decreased with an increase in the puppies' age, suggesting that human-dog relationships became friendlier. The PWs tended to use moderate coping behaviors to stop the inappropriate behaviors of the puppies. Rejecting interaction with the puppies was effective for stopping the puppies from biting the PWs. Forcible stopping was effective for stopping the puppies from damaging objects. Not responding to the puppies was effective for stopping the puppies from biting the PWs, barking/growling and damaging objects.  相似文献

Since the establishment of production of viable cloned dogs by somatic cell nucleus transfer, great concern has been given to the reproductive abilities of these animals (Canis familiaris). Therefore, we investigated reproductive activity of cloned dogs by (1) performing sperm analysis using computer-assisted sperm analysis and early embryonic development, (2) assessing reproductive cycling by measuring serum progesterone (P4) levels and performing vaginal cytology, and (3) breeding cloned dogs using artificial insemination. Results showed that most parameters of sperm motility in a cloned male dog were within the reference range, and in vivo–matured oocytes from a noncloned female were successfully fertilized by spermatozoa from a cloned male dog and develop normally to the 8-cell stage. Three cloned female dogs displayed normal patterns of P4 levels and morphologic changes of the vaginal epithelium. Two cloned female dogs became pregnant using semen from a cloned male dog and successfully delivered 10 puppies by natural labor. In conclusion, these data demonstrated that both cloned male and female dogs are fertile, and their puppies are currently alive and healthy with normal growth patterns.  相似文献

In experiments on puppies ageing from 7 days to 8 months, as well as on adult dogs, studies have been made on reflex mechanisms of potassium excretion after injection of 135 mM KCl solution (0.7 ml/kg) to the portal vein. It was found that reflex regulation of potassium extrusion undergoes 3 developmental stages: in puppies up to 1 month potassium excretion is absent; from 1 to 4 months ionuresis is not differentiated, since injection of KCl increases excretion of both K and Na; after 4 months of postnatal life potassium excretion attains its final form. Intravenous injections of pituitrin P reproduce the reactions which were observed in reflex potassium regulation in puppies up to 4 months, this finding indicating possible participation of neurohypophysial hormones in these reactions. In acute experiments it was shown that in puppies of the first month, the liver is not capable of potassium retention. This may be one of the causes of absence of reflex potassium excretion in animals of this age.  相似文献

Behavior and plasma cortisol levels were examined in puppies and juvenile/adult dogs admitted to a public animal shelter. A behavioral test was developed to assess the responses of the dogs to novel or threatening conditions. Factor analysis of the behavioral responses of 166 dogs on day 3 in the shelter yielded six factors (locomotor activity, flight, sociability, timidity, solicitation, and wariness) that accounted for 68% of the total variance. Among those dogs remaining in the shelter for 9 days, plasma cortisol levels declined from day 2 to 9. Cortisol levels were weakly related to factor scores. In order to explore the relation of measures in the shelter to later behavior, questionnaires assessing problem behaviors were mailed to new owners of dogs 2 weeks and 6 months following adoption. Among puppies, wariness scores were negatively correlated with behavior problems at 2 weeks and cortisol levels were negatively correlated with behavior problems at 6 months. These results suggest how measures of behavior and endocrine activity obtained in shelters might prove useful for screening dogs for adoption or targeting dogs for behavioral intervention.  相似文献

Adoption records from 2 no kill shelters in New York State were examined to determine how age, sex, size, breed group, and coat color influenced the length of stay (LOS) of dogs at these shelters. Young puppies had the shortest length of stay; LOS among dogs increased linearly as age increased. Neither coat color nor sex influenced LOS. Considering only size classifications, medium-size dogs had the greatest LOS, and extra small dogs and puppies remained in shelters for the least amount of time. Considering only breed groupings, dogs in the guard group had the greatest LOS and those in the giant group had the shortest LOS. The lack of effect of coat color was not expected, nor was the shorter LOS among “fighting” breeds compared with other breed groups. Coat color and breed may have only local effects on LOS that do not generalize to all shelters, including traditional shelters. Understanding the traits of dogs in a specific shelter and the characteristics of these nonhuman animals desired by adopters are critical to improving the welfare of animals served by that shelter.  相似文献

The prevalence of toxocariasis was evaluated for 445 dogs, 105 cats and 92 foxes from the Poznan region during 1997-1998. Forty one cats were infected (39%), 140 dogs (32%) and 15 red foxes (16%). Toxocara canis was found most frequently in puppies up to 3 months old (58%) and T. cati in kittens 4-6 months old (64%). Toxocariasis was much more prevalent amongst adult foxes (14%) than adult dogs (3%). In contrast to cats, female dogs and foxes were less infected than males. The present study suggests that cats may constitute an underestimated risk of transmission of Toxocara spp. to humans and the progressive synatropization of red foxes may also increase the sources of environmental contamination with Toxocara eggs.  相似文献

The effects of aging on plasma concentration of thyroxine (T4) and cortisol and on responses of these hormones to low ambient temperatures were determined in the dog. Female beagle dogs were divided into three age groups: old, adult, and puppies. The mean (+/- SD) ages were 11.4 +/- 0.2 years, 3.0 +/- 0.4 years, and 7.6 +/- 0.2 weeks, respectively. All dogs came from a genetically homogeneous colony and were free from any disease. The adult and old dogs were used during anestrus. Based on four daily blood samples, the mean (+/- SE) T4 level in the old dogs (2.8 +/- 0.1 microgram/dl) was significantly (P less than 0.001) lower than that in the adults (4.2 +/- 0.2 micrograms/dl) and puppies (4.4 +/- 0.2 micrograms/dl). By contrast, mean plasma cortisol levels in the old dogs (21.1 +/- 3.1 ng/ml) and adults (15.4 +/- 2.4 ng/ml) were significantly higher than those in the puppies (7.2 +/- 1.1 ng/ml). No significant changes in plasma T4 and cortisol occurred in any of the three age groups at 22 degrees C or during exposure to 10 or 4 degrees C. Exposure to -5 degrees C, however, produced significant increases in T4 (greater than 130% by 5 hr) and cortisol (greater than 280% by 1 hr) in adult dogs. This temperature produced only a modest increase in T4 (70% by 3.5 hr) and no change in cortisol in the old dogs. The puppies showed no change in T4 and cortisol during exposure to -5 degrees C. The results demonstrate that with advancing age, plasma T4 and cortisol concentrations change in opposite directions, thus supporting the hypothesis of a negative relationship between these two hormones. These results also show that the responses of these hormones to the stress of cold decline during aging and are not yet developed in the very young.  相似文献

This study shows longitudinal development of human-dog interactions in a guide dog raising program. Social play interactions between potential guide dogs for the blind (puppies) and their adult female raisers (PWs) were videotaped at home during the period from two months to 11 or 12 months of the puppies' age. The puppies and PWs established close proximity relationships by two to three months of age. The older the puppies became, the shorter time the puppies and PWs spent in intensive fighting and chasing play. The older the puppies became, the longer the puppies and PWs spent in waiting, seeking and possessing together play which needed the puppies' self-control, concentration and ability to cooperate with the PWs. Whether or not these behavioral tendencies which the puppies showed were appropriate for guide dog candidates is also discussed.  相似文献

Pneumonectomy (PNX) leads to chronic asymmetric ventilatory loading of respiratory muscles (RM). We measured RM energy requirements during exercise from RM blood flow (Q) using a fluorescent microsphere technique in dogs that had undergone right PNX as adults (adult R-PNX) or as puppies (puppy R-PNX), compared with dogs subjected to right thoracotomy without PNX as puppies (Sham) and to left PNX as adults (adult L-PNX). Ventilatory work (W) was measured during exercise. RM weight was determined post mortem. After adult and puppy R-PNX, the right hemidiaphragm becomes grossly distorted, but W and right costal muscle mass increased only after adult R-PNX. After adult L-PNX, the diaphragm was undistorted; W and left hemidiaphragm RM Q were elevated, but muscle mass did not increase. Mass of parasternal muscle did not increase after adult R-PNX, despite increased Q. Thus muscle mass increased only in response to the combination of chronic stretch and dynamic loading. There was a dorsal-to-ventral gradient of increasing Q within the diaphragm, but the distribution was unaffected by anatomic distortion, hypertrophy, or workload, suggesting a fixed pattern of neural activation. The diaphragm and parasternals were the primary muscles compensating for the asymmetric loading from PNX.  相似文献

In recent years much interest has been focused on early experiences and numerous studies have been carried out in order to understand their effects on the behaviour of adult animals. The aim of this preliminary study was to assess the effects of early gentling and early environment on the emotional stability of puppies. Forty-three dogs (16 females and 27 males) from seven litters were used. Four of these litters (in total 23 puppies) were raised in a professional breeding kennel, while the remaining litters lived in their owner's home, in a family atmosphere. Half of every litter was gently handled daily from the 3rd day postpartum until the 21st. In order to assess the puppies’ emotionality, an isolation test followed by an arena test were conducted on every puppy at the age of 8 weeks. Video recording of the tests allowed the measurement of each puppy's vocalization and exploratory activity. Data were analysed with the Newmann–Keuls’ test comparing four groups: non-handled puppies raised in family (NHF); handled puppies raised in family (HF); non-handled puppies raised in a professional breeding kennel (NHB); handled puppies raised in a professional breeding kennel (HB).

The results suggest that early environment strongly influences the emotional stability of puppies when put in isolation: latency to the first yelp was longer (p < 0.05) in the HB group (89.46 ± 66.42) compared to NHB (45.90 ± 52.76), NHF (13.10 ± 12.17) and HF (17.90 ± 14.32), and in the NHB compared to NHF and HF; duration of vocalizations was shorter (p < 0.05) in the HB (36.77 ± 54.16) and NHB group (72.80 ± 60.57) compared to NHF (149.78 ± 19.52) and HF (132.50 ± 45.24). Moreover, early gentling had a cumulative positive effect on the emotional development of puppies. For both environments, handled puppies were calmer. In fact, they showed longer latency to vocalize and handled puppies (HB = 119.00 ± 39.85; HF = 97.12 ± 33.56) spent significantly more time (seconds) in exploratory activity (p < 0.05) compared to the corresponding non-handled puppies (NHB = 64.90 ± 34.06; NHF = 57.00 ± 26.61).

Therefore, it is concluded that the deliberate inclusion of gentling during early puppyhood would be advantageous to the emotional development and welfare of the puppy, in particular for those at risk of limited or poor tactile stimulation in the early weeks.  相似文献

Heterologous serum was obtained from rabbits that had received repeated intravenous injections of a suspension of intact cells prepared from the thymus glands of puppies. The survival of renal homotransplants in bilaterally nephrectomized dogs treated with a single subcutaneous injection of this serum was significantly longer than the survival of transplants in untreated animals.  相似文献
