The foraging strategies of king penguins from Heard and Macquarie islands were compared using satellite telemetry, time-depth recorders and diet samples. Trip durations were 16.8±3.6 days and 14.8±4.1 days at Macquarie and Heard islands, respectively. At Macquarie Island, total distances travelled were 1281±203 km compared to 1425±516 km at Heard Island. The total time the penguins spent at sea was 393±66 h at Macquarie Island and 369±108 h at Heard Island. The penguins from Macquarie Island performed more deep dives than those from Heard Island. King penguins from Macquarie Island travelled 1.5±0.2 km h−1 day−1 compared to 1.3±0.1 km h−1 day−1. At Macquarie Island, 19% of dives were upto 70–90 m depth compared to 35% at Heard Island. The main dietary prey species were the fish Krefftychthis anderssoni and the squid Moroteuthis ingens in both groups. The differences in the at-sea distribution and the foraging behaviour of the two groups of penguins were possibly related to differences in oceanography and bathymetric conditions around the two islands. Dietary differences may be due to interannual variability in prey availability since the two colonies were studied during incubation but in different years.  相似文献

Temperature and precipitation are two major factors determining arthropod population densities, but the effects from these climate variables are seldom evaluated in the same study system and in combination with inter- and intraspecific density dependence. In this study, I used a 19 year time series on plant variables (shoot height and flowering incidence) and insect density in order to understand direct and indirect effects of climatic fluctuations on insect population densities. The study system includes two closely related leaf beetle species (Galerucella spp.) and a flower feeding weevil Nanophyes marmoratus attacking the plant purple loosestrife Lythrum salicaria. Results suggest that both intraspecific density dependence and weather variables affected Galerucella population densities, with interactive effects of rain and temperature on insect densities that depended on the timing relative to insect life cycles. In spring, high temperatures increased Galerucella densities only when combined with high rain, as low rain implies a high drought risk. Low temperatures are only beneficial if combined with little rain, as high rain cause chilly and wet conditions that are bad for insects. In summer, interactive effects of rain and temperature are different because high temperatures and little rain cause drought that induce wilting in plants, thus reducing food availability for the leaf feeding larvae. In contrast, the density of the flower feeding weevil was less affected by temperature and precipitation directly, and more indirectly interspecific density dependent effects through reduced resource availability caused by previous Galerucella damage.  相似文献

The islands of Bahía Santa María‐La Reforma, Sinaloa, Mexico, host the largest breeding population of the western race of American Oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus frazari). This resident shorebird has a small breeding range restricted to northwestern Mexico and, although listed as endangered, little is known about their breeding biology. We estimated the number of pairs on the El Rancho and Melendres islands, the detection rate of pairs in different habitats, and the relationship between habitat length and number of pairs during three breeding seasons (2016–2018). In 2016 and 2017, the number of pairs peaked in mid‐April (97 and 95 pairs, respectively) at El Rancho, and in early May and early April (50 and 42 pairs, respectively) at Melendres. In 2018, both islands had the maximum number of pairs during mid‐May, with 109 pairs at El Rancho and 42 at Melendres. Detectability of breeding pairs in plots with sandy beach and dune habitats was higher (86–100%) than in those with mangrove habitat (22%). Detectability was associated with habitat type and should be considered in estimating the population size of this subspecies. We estimated that ~ 11% of the total frazari American Oystercatcher population breeds on these two small islands. The density of breeding pairs varied between habitats (range = 0–13 pairs/km). We also found a positive relationship between the number of pairs and plot length, suggesting that habitat availability might be a limiting factor for populations of American Oystercatchers in Mexico.  相似文献

Epigeal movement of smoky shrewsSorex fumeus (Miller, 1895) following precipitation was examined in two habitats with different moisture conditions. Shrews and invertebrates were collected in pitfall traps over several consecutive nights each month from August to November 1996 and from March to August 1997. Capture rates of smoky shrews significantly increased following rainfall at dry ridgetop sites (p=0.001) but not at moist streamside sites (p=0.335). In mesic environments, favorable conditions on the forest floor not associated with precipitation may increase movements of shrews. Available invertebrate biomass did not increase significantly with rainfall in either habitat type (p=0.121 and 0.368). Increased surface activity by smoky shrews after rain events is probably related more to their ecophysiology than to increased prey availability.  相似文献

In nature, spatiotemporally dynamic coevolutionary processes play major roles in the foundation and maintenance of biodiversity. Here, we examined the arms race coevolution involving a seed-eating weevil with a long snout and its camellia plant host with a thick fruit coat (pericarp) throughout the marked climatic gradient observed across the Japanese islands. Results demonstrated that female weevils, which bored holes through camellia pericarps to lay eggs into seeds, had evolved much longer snouts than males, especially in areas in which Japanese camellia pericarps were very thick. The thickness of the plant pericarp was heritable, and the camellia plant evolved a significantly thicker pericarp on islands with the weevil than on islands without it. Across populations with weevils, resource allocation to plant defense increased with increasing annual mean temperature or annual precipitation, thereby geographically differentiating the evolutionary and ecological interactions between the two species. Given that the coevolutionary relationship exhibited appreciable variation across a relatively small range of annual mean temperatures, ongoing global climatic change can dramatically alter the coevolutionary process, thereby changing the ecological interaction between these species.  相似文献

The recent distributional history of two Macquarie Island vascular plant species, Carex trifida, Poa litorosa, and the Heard Island vascular plant, Ranunculus crassipes is examined. C. trifida is known from only one small population on the north west coast of Macquarie Island. Four populations of P. litorosa were first recorded in the 1980s; we believe however, that it was first observed, but misidentified in the 1950s. R. crassipes was first discovered on Heard Island in the late 1980s. We argue that all three species are indigenous and arrived on their respective islands within the last 200 years by natural processes, most likely from warmer neighbouring islands, where these species have more extensive distributions. There have been small-scale changes in distribution of all species, mainly expansion. Further expansion of all three species is expected as a response to warming climate. Feral rabbit grazing is having a confounding negative influence on populations of P. litorosa.  相似文献

Several specimens (larvae, pupa, females) of Telmatogeton sp. were found for the first time at Heard Island in the 2000/2001 season. Owing to the morphological characters of the individuals collected, the absence of males among the material, and lack of information concerning morphological variation in most Telmatogeton species from the Southern Ocean islands, it was not possible to assign the individuals to any of the species known from this biogeographical province with any confidence. Further sampling at Heard Island and re-examination of material from all of the other species are required to resolve the identity of the Telmatogeton species at Heard Island.  相似文献

Abstract 1 The relationship between reproductive performance and preference for potential host plants of the vine weevil is investigated, as shown in tests on contact (or feeding) preference, presented herein, and tests on olfactory preference, published elsewhere. 2 Assessment of reproductive performance shows that the host‐plant range of the adult vine weevil Otiorhynchus sulcatus in Europe is limited to one gymnosperm genus (Taxus sp.) and a broad range of angiosperm plants in two subclasses of the Dicotyledonae, namely Dilleniidae and Rosidae. The successful reproduction on very distantly related plant taxa suggests that the original weevil‐ and plant‐habitat has mediated the current host‐plant range of the vine weevil. 3 Contact‐preference tests with equally suitable hosts, such as Aronia, Fragaria, Euonymus and Taxus, and one less suitable host, Humulus, indicate a mismatch between contact preference and performance and, as far as olfactory preferences are known, these match neither the contact preferences nor the performance. This mismatch may arise because (i) host plant species offered do not occur in weevil habitat in Europe (e.g. Aronia and the cultivated Fragaria come from North America) and (ii) predation (or disease) risks differ among host plants, thereby altering effective reproductive performance. 4 With respect to performance on novel hosts (Thuja, Prunus) and bad hosts (Rhododendron), some between‐individual variation is found within a single population, suggesting that local populations harbour (possibly genetic) variation for adaptation to new hosts. How this variation is maintained in the face of strong selection pressures on local populations of flightless and thelytokous weevils, is an important question for understanding the broad host plant range in the vine weevil.  相似文献

Moss-inhabiting diatom communities from Heard Island,sub-Antarctic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, we list 192 diatom taxa, collected from bryophyte samples from Heard Island (52°05S, 73°30E). The Heard Island diatom flora shows a marked similarity to those of the Crozet and Kerguelen archipelagos, and is quite dissimilar to the moss-dwelling diatom flora of Macquarie and Amsterdam Island. Based on species composition, three main groups of samples could be discerned. Each group represents a different habitat. Samples dominated by Diadesmis ingeae, Pinnularia borealis and several Psammothidium species seem to prefer the driest habitats. A special form of this community was found in shaded areas. Samples from wet habitats such as flush areas and pools were dominated by species such as Adlafia bryophila, Sellaphora tumida, Fragilaria capucina and Planothidium lanceolatum. An intermediate group was observed in more acid, but terrestrial, conditions, characterised by Eunotia paludosa and Chamaepinnularia soehrensis var. muscicola. These community patterns are similar to those found on other sub-Antarctic islands, and we suggest that a group of typical sub-Antarctic species and communities exists.  相似文献

Aims: Lactobacillus brevis IOEB 9809 is able to produce both tyramine and putrescine via tyrosine decarboxylase and agmatine deiminase enzymes, respectively, when cultured on synthetic media. The aims of this study were to assess the expression of L. brevis IOEB 9809 tdc and aguA1 genes, during wine fermentation and to evaluate the effect of substrate availability and pH on tdc and aguA1 expression, as well as on biogenic amine production and L. brevis viability. Methods and Results: The relative expression of L. brevis IOEB 9809 tdc and aguA1 genes was analysed in wine by quantitative real‐time RT‐PCR (qRT‐PCR) during a period of incubation of 30 days. Cell viability, pH values, putrescine and tyramine concentration were monitored throughout the experiments. Conclusions: The wine trials indicated that L. brevis IOEB 9809 is able to produce both tyramine and putrescine during wine fermentation. Increased cell viability was also observed in wine supplemented with tyrosine or agmatine. qRT‐PCR analysis suggests a strong influence of substrate availability on the expression of genes coding for tyrosine decarboxylase and agmatine deiminase in L. brevis IOEB 9809. Less evident is the relationship between putrescine and tyramine production and tolerance to wine pH. Significance and Impact of Study: To our knowledge, this study represents the first assessment of relative expression of L. brevis IOEB 9809 genes involved in biogenic amine production in wine. Furthermore, an effect of biogenic amine production on viability of L. brevis during wine fermentation was established.  相似文献

To assess the influence of habitat fragmentation on small bats, we determined home range size and mobility of the frugivorousArtibeus watsoni Thomas, 1901 and the gleaning insectivorousMicronycteris microtis Miller, 1898 by radiotracking on different-sized islands (2.7–17 ha) in Lake Gatún, Panamá. The two species differed in their response to fragmentation. Home range size was highly variable in the five trackedA. watsoni, ranging from 1.8 to 17.9 ha with a mean of about 9 ha. Some individuals flew regularly between islands and/or the mainland, thereby traversing up to 180 m of open water. In comparison, home ranges of threeM. microtis were with about 3.8 ha only half as large. All ofM. microtis exhibited sedentary foraging behaviour and did not cross open water, suggesting that they might persist at least on some of the islands as resident populations. Our findings are consistent with radiotracking data from a previous study and indicate that small habitat patches are still used by small bats, provided the degree of isolation is low and that sufficient resources and larger habitat patches exist in close vicinity, potentially acting as additional feeding grounds and source populations.  相似文献

An endemic land snail genus Mandarina of the oceanic Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands shows exceptionally rapid evolution not only of morphological and ecological traits, but of DNA sequence. A phylogenetic relationship based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences suggests that morphological differences equivalent to the differences between families were produced between Mandarina and its ancestor during the Pleistocene. The inferred phylogeny shows that species with similar morphologies and life habitats appeared repeatedly and independently in different lineages and islands at different times. Sequential adaptive radiations occurred in different islands of the Bonin Islands and species occupying arboreal, semiarboreal, and terrestrial habitat arose independently in each island. Because of a close relationship between shell morphology and life habitat, independent evolution of the same life habitat in different islands created species possesing the same shell morphology in different islands and lineages. This rapid evolution produced some incongruences between phylogenetic relationship and species taxonomy. Levels of sequence divergence of mtDNA among the species of Mandarina is extremely high. The maximum level of sequence divergence at 16S and 12S ribosomal RNA sequence within Mandarina are 18.7% and 17.7%, respectively, and this suggests that evolution of mtDNA of Mandarina is extremely rapid, more than 20 times faster than the standard rate in other animals. The present examination reveals that evolution of morphological and ecological traits occurs at extremely high rates in the time of adaptive radiation, especially in fragmented environments.  相似文献

Raptor populations in Sudano‐Sahelian West Africa are being severely affected by widespread habitat alteration which depletes prey populations, potentially aggravated by changing rainfall patterns. We studied Grasshopper Buzzards Butastur rufipennis at nests in natural and transformed habitats in the Sudano‐Sahelian region of northern Cameroon to assess the effects of habitat transformation and rainfall on nestling diet and growth. Grasshoppers and small mammals were more frequently taken in natural habitat, whereas lizards were most frequently taken in transformed habitats. These dietary differences reflected differences in prey availability around nests in natural and transformed habitats. Land use was a significant predictor of asymptotic weight: nestlings in natural habitat attained a higher mass than those in transformed habitats, when potentially confounding variables such as hatch order, gender, hatch date, rainfall or the presence of siblings were taken into consideration. These results suggest that body condition at fledging was habitat‐dependent, with potential consequences for subsequent survival. However, we recorded no differences in caloric content of food delivered to nests in natural and transformed habitat, which was possibly related to prey caught during twilight hours. There was a positive relationship between precipitation levels during the nestling phase and nestling growth rate. We predict unfavourable future conditions for nestling growth of raptors in Sudano‐Sahelian savannas as a consequence of continued widespread habitat transformation and diminished rainfall.  相似文献

  1. Short‐range endemic plants often have edaphic specializations that, with their restricted distributions, expose them to increased risk of anthropogenic extinction.
  2. Here, we present a modeling approach to understand habitat suitability for Ricinocarpos brevis R.J.F.Hend. & Mollemans (Euphorbiaceae), a threatened shrub confined to three isolated populations in the semi‐arid south‐west of Western Australia. The model is a maximum entropy species distribution projection constructed on the basis of physical soil characteristics and geomorphology data at approximately 25 m2 (1 arc‐second) resolution.
  3. The model predicts the species to occur on shallow, low bulk density soils that are located high in the landscape. The model shows high affinity (72.1% average likelihood of occurrence) for the known populations of R. brevis, as well as identifying likely locations that are not currently known to support the species. There was a strong relationship between the likelihood of R. brevis occurrence and soil moisture content that the model estimated at a depth of 20 cm.
  4. We advocate that our approach should be standardized using publicly available data to generate testable hypotheses for the distribution and conservation management of short‐range endemic plant species for all of continental Australia.

New threshold‐based models to predict the start of invasion by the stem‐boring pest, the rape stem weevil (Ceutorhynchus napi Gyll.) of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), were developed and compared to published models using long‐term datasets on weather and weevil phenology from experimental locations in Germany and Luxembourg. Threshold values for daily records of maximum air temperature, mean soil temperature, sunshine duration and total precipitation were adjusted to local conditions on the date of first weevil migration in spring. Mean error and the root mean squared error were used to assess model quality, where the error is defined as the number of days between predicted and observed arrival of weevils on the crop (regardless of sign). Best model results predicted first crop invasion by rape stem weevil when the thresholds of daily maximum air temperature ≥7.8°C, mean soil temperature ≥6.6°C, daily total precipitation ≤1.0 mm and sunshine duration ≥1 h were matched. This model takes into account meteorological variables likely to influence conditions at the overwintering site of the weevils in the soil, as well as variables that may limit weevil flight. Adjusted air temperature threshold values were consistently lower for Luxembourg sites than for those optimized for Germany. A simple model relating the date of first weevil invasion to accumulated daily maximum air temperature above 0°C (from 1 January) was also evaluated. This proved less suitable for forecasting crop invasion by C. napi. We suggest that phenological models using locally adjusted meteorological‐based thresholds have the potential to offer sufficiently accurate forecasts of first immigration flights by C. napi for appropriate timing of insecticide application. In addition, the developed models are suitable tools to be used in climate change impact studies.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were carried out to determine the functional response of the parasitoid, Pteromalus cerealellae (Boucek) to cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) hosts, and the relationship between parasitism and cowpea variety susceptibility to the weevil. The attack response of P. cerealella to weevil larvae was best described by a type III functional response using an egg limitation model. The mean attack rate (a) of the parasitoid was estimated as 1.7 and the upper limit of the response was 24 weevil larvae per individual parasitoid within a 48-h period. The results also showed that cowpea varieties resistant to weevil infestation supported fewer weevil progeny and facilitated a greater suppression of the weevil by the parasitoid. The parasitoid progeny index, a measure that compares the number of the parasitoid progeny to the number of the beetle progeny was higher in cowpea weevil resistant varieties than in susceptible varieties. Additionally, the presence of P. cerealellae resulted in reduced weight losses of cowpea caused by the weevil infestation in both susceptible and resistant varieties.  相似文献

In a changing climate, it is imperative to understand potential ecosystem resilience at all taxonomic levels. I compare seasonal small mammal utilization of woodlands (tree islands) and grasslands in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, to elucidate macrohabitat relationships and to test whether the two macrohabitats are similar in their ability to serve as a source of colonizers for the other after disturbance. Capture–mark–recapture data revealed that abundances for Dendromus mesomelas and Gerbilliscus leucogaster were higher in grasslands than tree islands, while Mus indutus abundance appeared higher in the grasslands in the dry season but roughly equal in the rainy season. Mastomys spp. and Steatomys pratensis maintained low levels in the grassland habitat throughout the year and experienced a population peak in the tree island habitat during the rainy season. There were no significant differences in sex ratio, mean mass or breeding condition. Dominance and total biomass were higher in the grasslands with the trend more pronounced in the rainy season. Terrestrial small mammals in the Okavango Delta employ differing strategies in macrohabitat selection and some exploit tree islands when herbaceous cover is present. Metacommunity dynamics exist for some species, and both habitats can serve as a source of colonizers under certain conditions.  相似文献

This study examined the spatial and temporal variation in fish assemblage composition within two intermittent streams in north‐western Zimbabwe. Eight sites were sampled during three different periods of flow. Twenty‐five species in eight families, dominated by cichlids and cyprinids, were collected. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to explore the relationship between species and their environmental correlates. According to variation partition, 68.1% of assemblage variation was explained by both habitat and temporal variables. Most species were associated with large pools, whereas small species were associated with habitats that had gravel and boulders. The temporal aspect suggested a pattern associated with high catch per unit effort (CPUE) for the mormyrids, Clarias gariepinus and Labeo altivelis, during the early rain period. By comparison, the late rain period was associated with high CPUE for Labeo cylindricus, Labeobarbus marequensis, Chiloglanis neumanni and Oreochromis mortimeri, whereas the rest of the species had high CPUE during both the late rain and dry periods. The assemblage composition was more diverse during the late rain period. Refuge availability during the dry period appeared to be essential for the assemblage of the intermittent streams. Protection of these temporal habitats is therefore important in conserving fish assemblages within intermittent streams of the Lake Kariba area.  相似文献

Aim The phylogeny of the enid land-snail genus Pachnodus was determined in order to provide information on biogeographical patterns within the granitic Seychelles islands. Location The genus Pachnodus is endemic to the granitic islands of Seychelles (Mahé, Silhouette, Praslin, La Digue and Fregate). Methods Phylogeny was determined using a cladistic analysis of nineteen shell and soft-body anatomy characters. The outgroup used was the central-east African genus Cerastus. Results The proposed phylogeny indicates that the genus divided into two distinct subgenera early in its history. Subsequent speciation occurred in parallel in the two subgenera, resulting in several islands supporting at least two distinct species representing the two subgenera. Main conclusions The pattern of speciation is largely explicable by vicariance as a result of sea-level rises, followed by habitat specialisation and further speciation. The pattern is in contrast to previously published scenarios for other taxa in the islands and indicates significant differences between evolutionary and habitat factors in the biogeography of the Seychelles fauna  相似文献

Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis are cosmopolitan, obligatory parasites. Epidemiological studies have established a clear association between these species and various facial diseases in humans. However, not much is known of the ecology of these mites, also because it has proven difficult to culture them. Here we report a laboratory study on the (combined) effects of temperature and culture medium on the viability of both species. Results showed significant differences in the survival time of D. folliculorum and D. brevis among different temperatures and media. Pair-wise comparisons revealed that both species survived longest in serum medium, at a temperature of 16–22°C. Therefore, we conclude that these conditions allow preservation and maintenance of both Demodex mites.  相似文献
