Background

How acceptance of evolution relates to understanding of evolution remains controversial despite decades of research. It even remains unclear whether cultural/attitudinal factors or cognitive factors have a greater impact on student ability to learn evolutionary biology. This study examined the influence of cultural/attitudinal factors (religiosity, acceptance of evolution, and parents’ attitudes towards evolution) and cognitive factors (teleological reasoning and prior understanding of natural selection) on students’ learning of natural selection over a semester-long undergraduate course in evolutionary medicine.

Method

Pre-post course surveys measured cognitive factors, including teleological reasoning and prior understanding of natural selection, and also cultural/attitudinal factors, including acceptance of evolution, parent attitudes towards evolution, and religiosity. We analyzed how these measures influenced increased understanding of natural selection over the semester.

Results

After controlling for other related variables, parent attitude towards evolution and religiosity predicted students’ acceptance of evolution, but did not predict students’ learning gains of natural selection over the semester. Conversely, lower levels of teleological reasoning predicted learning gains in understanding natural selection over the course, but did not predict students’ acceptance of evolution.

Conclusions

Acceptance of evolution did not predict students’ ability to learn natural selection over a semester in an evolutionary medicine course. However, teleological reasoning did impact students’ ability to learn natural selection.

Key message

Best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP), which uses pedigree to estimate breeding values, can result in increased genetic gains for low heritability traits in autotetraploid potato.

Abstract

Conventional potato breeding strategies, based on outcrossing followed by phenotypic recurrent selection over a number of generations, can result in slow but steady improvements of traits with moderate to high heritability. However, faster gains, particularly for low heritability traits, could be made by selection on estimated breeding values (EBVs) calculated using more complete pedigree information in best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) analysis. One complication in applying BLUP predictions of breeding value to potato breeding programs is the autotetraploid inheritance pattern of this species. Here we have used a large pedigree, dating back to 1908, to estimate heritability for nine key traits for potato breeding, modelling autotetraploid inheritance. We estimate the proportion of double reduction in potatoes from our data, and across traits, to be in the order of 10 %. Estimates of heritability ranged from 0.21 for breeder’s visual preference, 0.58 for tuber yield, to 0.83 for plant maturity. Using the accuracies of the EBVs determined by cross generational validation, we model the genetic gain that could be achieved by selection of genotypes for breeding on BLUP EBVs and demonstrate that gains can be greater than in conventional schemes.  相似文献

Resolution of disputes and investigation of institutions that have attempted to right the wrongs (some of which have persisted for centuries) regarding pastoralists’ property rights over indigenous water sources in East Africa have rarely been the subject of formal study. Using a framework of water property rights, hereafter konfi, we report on contestations over rights to the ancient tula wells in southern Ethiopia, some of which have been in operation for more than 500 years. Unlike grazing lands, which are communal resources, wells are private properties managed by corporate clan members. We reconstructed the history of contests over property rights to 64 wells and found that some contests over konfi have remained unresolved for many generations. Only a small percentage (20%) of the wells have no history of disputes over property rights. The resolution of disputes relies on the principal tenet of the non-transferability of konfi property rights, except in the case of the family of the ancestral konfi dying out. Contestants are expected to reconstruct how they lost the konfi in the first place. The Borana tend to discourage contests over wells through the long duration of investigations, as well as myths associated with false claims that appeared to result in deaths among the claimants.  相似文献

Purpose

Due to the large environmental challenges posed by the transport sector, reliable and state-of-the art data for its life cycle assessment is essential for enabling a successful transition towards more sustainable systems. In this paper, the new electric passenger car transport and vehicle datasets, which have been developed for ecoinvent version 3, are presented.

Methods

The new datasets have been developed with a strong modular approach, defining a hierarchy of datasets corresponding to various technical components in the vehicle. A vehicle is therefore modelled by linking together the various component datasets. Also, parameters and mathematical formulas have been introduced in order to define the amount of exchanges in the datasets through common transport and vehicle characteristics. This supports users in the choice of the amount of exchanges and enhances the transparency of the dataset.

Results

The new transport dataset describes the transport over 1 km with a battery electric passenger car taking into account the vehicle production and end of life, the energy consumption due to the use phase, non-exhaust emissions, maintenance and road infrastructure. The dataset has been developed and is suitable for a compact class vehicle.

Conclusions

A new electric passenger car transport dataset has been developed for version 3 of the ecoinvent database which exploits modularisation and parameters with the aim of facilitating users in adapting the data to their specific needs. Apart from the direct use of the transport dataset for background data, the various datasets for the different components can also be used as building blocks for virtual vehicles.

Eriophyid mites have been considered to have a high potential for use as classical biological control agents of weeds. We reviewed known examples of the use of eriophyid mites to control weedy plants to learn how effective they have been. In the past 13 years, since Rosenthal’s 1996 review, 13 species have undergone some degree of pre-release evaluation (Aceria genistae, A. lantanae, Aceria sp. [boneseed leaf buckle mite (BLBM)], A. salsolae, A. sobhiani, A. solstitialis, A. tamaricis, A. thalgi, A. thessalonicae, Cecidophyes rouhollahi, Floracarus perrepae, Leipothrix dipsacivagus and L. knautiae), but only four (A. genistae, Aceria sp. [BLBM], C. rouhollahi and F. perrepae) have been authorized for introduction. Prior to this, three species (Aceria chondrillae, A. malherbae and Aculus hyperici) were introduced and have become established. Although these three species impact the fitness of their host plant, it is not clear how much they have contributed to reduction of the population of the target weed. In some cases, natural enemies, resistant plant genotypes, and adverse abiotic conditions have reduced the ability of eriophyid mites to control target weed populations. Some eriophyid mites that are highly coevolved with their host plant may be poor prospects for biological control because of host plant resistance or tolerance of the plant to the mite. Susceptibility of eriophyids to predators and pathogens may also prevent them from achieving population densities necessary to reduce host plant populations. Short generation time, high intrinsic rate of increase and high mobility by aerial dispersal imply that eriophyids should have rapid rates of evolution. This raises concerns that eriophyids may be more likely to lose efficacy over time due to coevolution with the target weed or that they may be more likely to adapt to nontarget host plants compared to insects, which have a longer generation time and slower population growth rate. Critical areas for future research include life history, foraging and dispersal behavior, mechanisms controlling host plant specificity, and evolutionary stability of eriophyid mites. This knowledge is critical for designing and interpreting laboratory and field experiments to measure host plant specificity and potential impact on target and nontarget plants, which must be known before they can be approved for release. One of the more successful examples of an eriophyid mite controlling an invasive alien weed is Phyllocoptes fructiphilus, whose impact is primarily due to transmission of a virus pathogenic to the target, Rosa multiflora. Neither the mite nor the virus originated from the target weed, which suggests that using “novel enemies” may sometimes be an effective strategy for using eriophyid mites.  相似文献

Background

Recovering useful hand function after stroke is a major scientific challenge for patients with limited motor recovery. We hypothesized that sequential training beginning with proximal bilateral followed by unilateral task oriented training is superior to time-matched unilateral training alone. Proximal bilateral training could optimally prepare the motor system to respond to the more challenging task-oriented training.

Methods

Participants: Twenty-six participants with moderate severity hemiparesis Intervention: Participants received either 6-weeks of bilateral proximal training followed sequentially by 6-weeks unilateral task-oriented training (COMBO) or 12-weeks of unilateral task-oriented training alone (SAEBO). A subset of 8 COMB0 and 9 SAEBO participants underwent three functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans of hand and elbow movement every 6 weeks. Main Outcome Measures: Fugl-Meyer Upper extremity scale, Modified Wolf Motor Function Test, University of Maryland Arm Questionnaire for Stroke, Motor cortex activation (fMRI).

Results

The COMBO group demonstrated significantly greater gains between baseline and 12-weeks over all outcome measures (p?=?.018 based on a MANOVA test) and specifically in the Modified Wolf Motor Function test (time). Both groups demonstrated within-group gains on the Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity test (impairment) and University of Maryland Arm Questionnaire for Stroke (functional use). fMRI subset analyses showed motor cortex (primary and premotor) activation during hand movement was significantly increased by sequential combination training but not by task-oriented training alone.

Conclusions

Sequentially combining a proximal bilateral before a unilateral task-oriented training may be an effective way to facilitate gains in arm and hand function in those with moderate to severe paresis post-stroke compared to unilateral task oriented training alone.

    Large genetic improvements in the quantitative traits of growth, production, and efficiency of farmed livestock have been made over recent decades, and by introduction of genomic technology these are being enhanced. Such continued improvement requires that there be available variation to utilize. The evidence is that little variation has been lost and such rates are indeed sustainable in the future.SINCE GENETICS was founded we have seen an enormous increase in productivity of livestock for food production. Much of that is due to rapid genetic improvement in the past 60 years of quantitative traits such as growth rate, reproductive rate, and feed conversion efficiency. The improvement has been due to selection, recently mainly within populations, and has continued at similar rates for many livestock generations. I consider whether these rates, which depend on a continuing supply of useful genetic variation, can be maintained or indeed enhanced. Chickens provide my main source of examples as they have been under very strong selection pressure for many decades in the developed world and there is well-documented evidence of their genetic improvement, but the principles are not species-dependent.     Abstract

    Cultivated potatoes are highly heterozygous due to their outbreeding nature, and suffer acute inbreeding depression. Modern potato cultivars also exhibit tetrasomic inheritance. Due to this genetic heterogeneity, the large number of target traits and the specific requirements of commercial cultivars, potato breeding is challenging. A conventional breeding strategy applies phenotypic recurrent selection over a number of generations, a process which can take over 10 years. Recently, major advances in genetics and molecular biology have provided breeders with molecular tools to accelerate gains for some traits. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) can be effectively used for the identification of major genes and quantitative trait loci that exhibit large effects. There are also a number of complex traits of interest, such as yield, that are influenced by a large number of genes of individual small effect where MAS will be difficult to deploy. Progeny testing and the use of pedigree in the analysis can provide effective identification of the superior genetic factors that underpin these complex traits. Recently, it has been shown that estimated breeding values (EBVs) can be developed for complex potato traits. Using a combination of MAS and EBVs for simple and complex traits can lead to a significant reduction in the length of the breeding cycle for the identification of superior germplasm.  相似文献

    Purpose

    In an effort to reduce the environmental impacts of the furniture sector, this study aimed to diagnose the environmental performance of an office cabinet throughout its life cycle.

    Methods

    An attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) was used, based on the ISO 14044 Standard and ILCD Handbook. The scope of the study considered the entire supply chain, from cradle to grave, including the steps of pre-manufacturing, manufacturing, use, and post-use of the product. The impact assessment method was the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) 2011 midpoint.

    Results and discussion

    The results identified that the most significant environmental impact of the furniture life cycle was due to the distances covered and production of the main raw material, wood medium-density particleboard (MDP). The evaluation of transport scenarios showed environmental tradeoffs for truck fuel switches and environmental gains for the distribution of MDP from closer suppliers by truck, as well as from current supplier by truck and ship in the major categories. Furthermore, evaluation of the office cabinet post-use options showed that reuse, recycling, or energy recovery from waste cause significant environmental gains in the major categories. Wooden furniture is a potential carbon sink if its life cycle does not emit more greenhouse gases than its materials can store. The impacts of substitution scenarios varied depending on the type of product avoided.

    Conclusions

    The LCA proved a powerful method to diagnose and manage environmental impacts in complex product systems. The sensitivity analysis showed that it is possible to reduce the environmental impacts and, at the same time, make the furniture industry increase its economic gains and net carbon stock in the anthroposphere.

    Introduction

    Ninety-seven percent of yam (Dioscorea spp.) production takes place in low income food deficit countries (LIFDCs) and the crop provides 200 calories a day to approximately 300 million people. Therefore, yams are vital for food security. Yams have high-yield potential and high market value potential yet current breeding of yam is hindered by a lack of genomic information and genetic resources. New tools are needed to modernise breeding strategies and unlock the potential of yam to improve livelihood in LIFDCs.

    Objectives

    Metabolomic screening has been undertaken on a diverse panel of Dioscorea accessions to assess the utility of the approach for advancing breeding strategies in this understudied crop.

    Methods

    Polar and lipophilic extracts from tubers of accessions from the global yam breeding program have been comprehensively profiled via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

    Results

    A visual pathway representation of the measured yam tuber metabolome has been delivered as a resource for biochemical evaluation of yam germplasm. Over 200 compounds were routinely measured in tubers, providing a major advance for the chemo-typing of this crop. Core biochemical redundancy concealed trends that were only elucidated following detailed mining of global metabolomics data. Combined analysis on leaf and tuber material identified a subset of metabolites which allow accurate species classification and highlighted the potential of predicting tuber composition from leaf profiles. Metabolic variation was accession-specific and often localised to compound classes, which will aid trait-targeting for metabolite markers.

    Conclusions

    Metabolomics provides a standalone platform with potential to deliver near-future crop gains for yam. The approach compliments the genetic advancements currently underway and integration with other ‘–omics’ studies will deliver a significant advancement to yam breeding strategies.

    Purpose

    To analyse patient demographics, indications, survival and donor characteristics for heart transplantation (HTx) during the past 30 years at the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU).

    Methods

    Data have been prospectively collected for all patients who underwent HTx at the UMCU from 1985 until 2015. Patients who were included underwent orthotopic HTx at an age >14 years.

    Results

    In total, 489 hearts have been transplanted since 1985; 120 patients (25%) had left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation prior to HTx. A shift from ischaemic heart disease to dilated cardiomyopathy has been seen as the leading indication for HTx since the year 2000. Median age at HTx was 49 years (range 16–68). Median waiting time and donor age have also increased from 40 to 513 days and from 27 to 44 years respectively (range 11–65). Donor cause of death is now primarily stroke, in contrast to head and brain injury in earlier years. Estimated median survival is 15.4 years (95% confidence interval 14.2–16.6) There is better survival throughout these years.

    Conclusion

    Over the past 30 years, patient and donor demographics and underlying diseases have shifted substantially. Furthermore, the increase in waiting time due to lack of available donor hearts has led to a rise in the use of LVADs as bridge to transplant. Importantly, an improvement in survival rates is found over time which could be explained by better immunosuppressive therapy and improvements in follow-up care.

    Experimental and theoretical studies of a new class of novel annulated imidazolium scffords 2a, 2b, 2c and their Hg(II)-NHC complexes 3a, 3b and 3c have been synthesized and characterized by different spectroscopic techniques. Molecular structures of 3a and 3b have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Virtual linear geometry [Ccarbene-Hg-Ccarbene 176.56(17)°] around Hg of the complex 3b is observed where as in 3a and 3c its deviate a more. DFT calculations provide geometrical parameters in conformity with the experimental values in case of 3a. The molecules prefer syn configuration over the anti due to lower energy supported by theoretical studies. Attention has given paid for theoretical calculations and comparison of 3a and 3c to observe the steric effect of -CH3 group in the scaffords where as in case of 3b the -CH3 group remain innocent.  相似文献

    Background

    Previous studies have reported frequent stretches of homozygosity in human subjects but have failed to clarify whether these are due to cytogenetic abnormalities or to autozygosity.

    Methods

    Trios which had been typed for closely spaced SNPs spanning the genome were studied. Stretches of extended homozygosity were identified in the child members, as were occasions on which the child had been genotyped as not inheriting one parental allele. The number of times such transmission errors occurred within regions of extended homozygosity was compared with the chance expectation.

    Results

    Transmission errors occurred more rarely in regions of extended homozygosity than would be expected by chance.

    Discussion

    Regions of extended homozygosity are not generally due to cytogenetic abnormalities such as uniparental isodisomy. They reflect the Mendelian inheritance of haplotypes from a common ancestor. This may have implications for mapping disease genes.  相似文献

    Variability of the beta-amylase gene in bread wheat, artificial amphidiploids, and derived introgression wheat lines was analyzed. Variation in homeologous beta-amylase sequences caused by the presence of MITE (Miniature Inverted-Repeat Transposable Element) and its footprint has been identified in bread wheat. The previously unknown location of MITE in Triticum urartu and T. aestivum L. beta-amylase gene has been found. These species have a MITE sequence in the third intron of beta-amylase, as opposed to Aegilops comosa and a number of other Triticeae species, which have it in the fourth intron. These two MITEs from Ae. comosa and T. aestivum were shown to have low identity scores. Miosa, an artificial amphidiploid, which has the M genome from Ae. comosa was shown to lose the MITE sequences. This loss might be caused by genomic shock due to allopolyploidization.  相似文献

    Phenotypic integration can influence evolutionary rate and direction by channeling variation into few dimensions. The extent to which that channeling serves as a constraint over macroevolutionary timescales is determined in part by the evolutionary lability of phenotypic integration. Evolutionary change in patterns of pleiotropy, potentially reducing that constraint, is thought to be more readily achieved when pleiotropy is structured by variation arising in parallel along different developmental pathways rather than by variation arising from direct interactions within and between those pathways. Herein we test two predictions that follow from that hypothesis: (1) that clades undergoing dramatic diversification are characterized by integration that is weakly influenced by direct interactions; and (2) that the structure of integration arising from direct interactions is more conservative than that arising from parallel variation. We examine integration of the cranidium of two Cambrian ptychoparioid trilobites, Crassifimbra walcotti and Eokochaspis nodosa, comparing them to each other and to a previously studied species, C.? metalaspis. Shape variation is decomposed into components representing variation among individuals and variation due to direct interactions. In all three species, variation among individuals was only weakly influenced by direct interactions, suggesting that integration was unlikely to have been a long-term constraint on the Cambrian diversification of ptychoparioids. Phenotypic integration of E. nodosa is no more similar than expected by chance to either Crassifimbra species, but the component due to direct interactions is more similar than expected by chance to that of C.? metalaspis. Conversely, the two Crassifimbra species are generally similar (although not identical) in phenotypic integration, but markedly differ in their structure of direct interactions. Integration arising from direct interactions was therefore not immune to restructuring over even short evolutionary timescales, and was not always more conservative than that arising from parallel variation.  相似文献

    Lodging is the process where crop plants fall over and lie on the ground due to strong winds and heavy precipitation. This problem reduces yield and increases the risk of fungal infections and pre-harvest germination. In order to avoid lodging, plant breeders utilize short-culm mutants, which often have a robust culm that can support the weight of a heavy spike. In barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), thousands of short-culm mutants have been isolated in breeding programs around the world. Our long-term goal is to reveal the genetic network underlying culm length, with the objective to provide an enlarged repertoire of genes and alleles suitable for future breeding of lodging resistant barley. In the present work we studied a group of allelic brh2 and ari-l mutants, which have a relatively strong semi-dwarf phenotype and are phenotypically similar to previously identified mutants deficient in brassinosteroid signalling or metabolism. The Brh2 gene is located in the centromeric region of chromosome 4H and we applied a candidate gene approach to identify the gene. Brh2 is orthologous to TUD1 in rice (Orysa sativa L.), which encodes a U-box E3 ubiquitin ligase. We identified one missense mutation, one nonsense mutation and four deletions of the complete Brh2 gene. The mutants could respond to exogenously applied brassinolide, which suggests that the apparent brassinosteroid deficient phenotype of barley brh2 and ari-l mutants is related to brassinosteroid metabolism rather than signalling.  相似文献

    We present and highlight a partitioning procedure based on the Rao quadratic entropy index to assess temporal in situ inter-annual varietal and genetic changes of crop diversity.

    Abstract

    For decades, Western-European agroecosystems have undergone profound changes, among which a reduction of crop genetic diversity. These changes have been highlighted in numerous studies, but no unified partitioning procedure has been proposed to compute the inter-annual variability in both varietal and genetic diversity. To fill this gap, we tested, adjusted and applied a partitioning procedure based on the Rao quadratic entropy index that made possible to describe the different components of crop diversity as well as to account for the relative acreages of varieties. To emphasize the relevance of this procedure, we relied on a case study focusing on the temporal evolution of bread wheat diversity in France over the period 1981–2006 at both national and district scales. At the national scale, we highlighted a decrease of the weighted genetic replacement indicating that varieties sown in the most recent years were more genetically similar than older ones. At the district scale, we highlighted sudden changes in weighted genetic replacement in some agricultural regions that could be due to fast shifts of successive leading varieties over time. Other regions presented a relatively continuous increase of genetic similarity over time, potentially due to the coexistence of a larger number of co-leading varieties that got closer genetically. Based on the partitioning procedure, we argue that a tendency of in situ genetic homogenization could be compared to some of its potential causes, such as a decrease in the speed of replacement or an increase in between-variety genetic similarity over time.

    A comprehensive understanding of CMS/Rf system enabled by modern omics tools and technologies considerably improves our ability to harness hybrid technology for enhancing the productivity of field crops.

    Abstract

    Harnessing hybrid vigor or heterosis is a promising approach to tackle the current challenge of sustaining enhanced yield gains of field crops. In the context, cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) owing to its heritable nature to manifest non-functional male gametophyte remains a cost-effective system to promote efficient hybrid seed production. The phenomenon of CMS stems from a complex interplay between maternally-inherited (mitochondrion) and bi-parental (nucleus) genomic elements. In recent years, attempts aimed to comprehend the sterility-inducing factors (orfs) and corresponding fertility determinants (Rf) in plants have greatly increased our access to candidate genomic segments and the cloned genes. To this end, novel insights obtained by applying state-of-the-art omics platforms have substantially enriched our understanding of cytoplasmic-nuclear communication. Concomitantly, molecular tools including DNA markers have been implicated in crop hybrid breeding in order to greatly expedite the progress. Here, we review the status of diverse sterility-inducing cytoplasms and associated Rf factors reported across different field crops along with exploring opportunities for integrating modern omics tools with CMS-based hybrid breeding.

    Herbicides with new modes of action (MOAs) are badly needed due to the rapidly evolving resistance to commercial herbicides, but a new MOA has not been introduced in over 20 years. The greatest pest management challenge for organic agriculture is the lack of effective natural product herbicides. The structural diversity and evolved biological activity of natural phytotoxins offer opportunities for the development of both directly used natural compounds and synthetic herbicides with new target sites based on the structures of natural phytotoxins. Natural phytotoxins are also a source for the discovery of new herbicide target sites that can serve as the focus of traditional herbicide discovery efforts. There are many examples of strong natural phytotoxins with MOAs other than those used by commercial herbicides, which indicates that there are molecular targets of herbicides that can be added to the current repertoire of commercial herbicide MOAs.The evolutionary forces driving the survival of species include chemical interactions between organisms, which function in positive interactions such as mutualistic and symbiotic relationships and negative interactions such as competitive and parasitic relationships. These processes have led to the emergence of novel secondary metabolic pathways (often through gene duplication), producing a vast array of structurally diverse and biologically active molecules (Moore and Purugganan, 2005; Ober, 2005; Flagel and Wendel, 2009; Jiang et al., 2013). This evolutionary process is similar to a high-throughput screen. However, unlike conventional in vitro screens, which test many compounds on a single biochemical target over a very short period of time, this natural high-throughput process selects molecules based on their whole-organism activities, involving numerous chemical interactions between countless organisms and target sites over millions of years. To date, approximately 200,000 secondary metabolites have been identified (Tulp and Bohlin, 2005), with many more expected to be discovered. Few of these compounds have been examined for phytotoxicity, and the modes or mechanisms of action (MOAs) of even fewer known phytotoxins have been elucidated.The negative chemical interactions between organisms are often characterized using anthropomorphic language, such as chemical warfare, referring to the production of phytotoxins used by plant pathogens to invade their host plants (Maor and Shirasu, 2005), and the novel weapons hypothesis, which is associated with the chemical-based advantage of some invasive plant species over native plant populations (Callaway and Aschehoug, 2000; Callaway and Ridenour, 2004; Callaway and Maron, 2006; Cappuccino and Arnason, 2006; Callaway et al., 2008). While simplistic, this terminology illustrates how these toxin-based interactions exploit biochemical weaknesses between an organism and its host or enemy/competitor to enhance its own survival (Verhoeven et al., 2009). In fact, these interactions can even be multitrophic, such as when exotic plants enhance their invasiveness by promoting the growth of certain native soil pathogens noxious to native plants (Mangla et al., 2008; Barto et al., 2011).As humans evolved from a nomadic hunter-gatherer subsistence existence to an agricultural lifestyle, they learned to utilize certain biologically active secondary metabolites to manage agricultural pests. Indeed, the concept that nature is an excellent source of natural pesticides is captured in the following ancient Lithica poem (circa 400 B.C.): “All the pests that out of earth arise, the earth itself the antidote supplies” (Ibn et al., 1781). Less than a century later, Greek and Roman treatises described practices to control agricultural pests that include the use of essential oils. Similar documents are found in Chinese literature, such as a survey describing plant species used to control plant pests (Yang and Tang, 1988). The mid-20th century ushered in the use of synthetic pesticides, which have revolutionized agriculture. Like pharmaceuticals (Harvey, 1999, 2008; Newman and Cragg, 2012), many pesticides are based on natural compounds. However, natural products have not played a major role in herbicide discovery (Copping and Duke, 2007; Hüter, 2011).  相似文献
