We present the first ever observations of dwarf crocodiles (Osteolaemus tetraspis) selectively utilizing a cave ecosystem. We analysed crocodile diet to preliminarily assess the degree of ecological isolation of cave‐dwelling crocodiles from their forest‐dwelling conspecifics despite their physical proximity. We additionally conducted the first study of body condition of dwarf crocodiles and compared cave‐dwelling individuals to surface‐dwelling individuals from a variety of alternative habitats and sites as a means to better understand the implications of a semihypogean life on this species. Crocodiles captured in the caves appeared to forage exclusively in the caves and ate mostly cave crickets and bats, whereas crocodiles captured in the surrounding forest habitat consumed primarily freshwater crustaceans and insects and were not found to consume cave‐dwelling prey. Juvenile cave crocodiles had significantly higher body condition compared to juvenile forest crocodiles, which did not vary amongst forest locations. The difference in body condition between adult cave and forest crocodiles was not statistically significant despite also being higher; we suspect this is an artefact of the low sample size rather than a real nondifference. Forest adult crocodiles generally had significantly higher body condition than juveniles, but did not vary by site or habitat. This lack of variation suggests that habitat type is not the most important factor influencing dwarf crocodile body condition. Our results provide a unique insight into facultative cave use by a principally surface‐dwelling species and reinforce the necessity for further research into this unique system to better understand the evolutionary‐scale implications of cave habitat use by dwarf crocodiles.  相似文献

To assess the potential gestational effects on post-hatching morphology, locomotor performance, and early growth rate, we maintained gravid Eremias multiocellata under four constant treatment temperatures (25, 29, 31, and 35 °C). Ambient temperature had significant effects on some morphometric traits of offspring, including tail length, head size, forelimb length and hindlimb length, but not on body mass or snout-vent length. The data of females' body temperature indirectly support the maternal manipulation hypothesis. Juvenile E. multiocellata had better locomotor performance and faster early growth rate at 29 °C than at the other three treatment temperatures (25, 31, and 35 °C). Our results suggest that gestation temperature may be optimized at 29 °C for E. multiocellata from Tianzhu, Gansu Province, China.  相似文献

Hemisphere scale events such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can alter rainfall regimes worldwide, with important effects on species abundance and distribution. The evidence of ENSO effects on terrestrial communities is, however, restricted to a few ecosystem types. We explored the effects of ENSO episodes on plant/terrestrial-herbivore interactions through changes in the rainfall regime in a southwestern Atlantic salt marsh (Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina. 37° 40′S, 57° 23′W). Surveys showed a positive relationship between winter rainfall and the abundance of the wild guinea pig Cavia aperea. The highest salt marsh abundances of C. aperea were associated with rainy periods during El Niño episodes, and the lowest ones were associated with the driest La Niña episodes. Rainfall was negatively associated with marsh sediment salinity, and experiments revealed that increased salinity reduces growth and increases mortality of cordgrass (Spartina densiflora). Salt increase also causes the highest percentage of dry area in S. densiflora leaves and reduced carbon content, and more salt content and secretion in S. densiflora stems. A factorial experiment in which we manipulated C. aperea presence and salinity along the edges of S. densiflora patches showed that plants can asexually invade unvegetated areas when salinity is reduced and C. aperea is excluded. Conversely, S. densiflora edges retracted when salinity was increased or there was C. aperea herbivory. Changes in nutritional quality of S. densiflora could explain the low herbivory of (and lack of impacts from) C. aperea in plots with high salinity. Thus, plant distribution responds directly to climate oscillations through changes in salt stress, and indirectly, through changes in plant-herbivore interactions. Herbivores respond indirectly to climate oscillations through changes in plant food quality, which suggests that top-down effects increase when bottom-up stressors are relaxed. ENSO events have direct and indirect effects on marsh communities that modulate the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up effects and have a considerable effect on the primary productivity of S. densiflora marshes.  相似文献

Few studies have conducted morphological analyses of crocodilians, and little information exists on differences between size-classes and sexes in Neotropical crocodilians. In this study, we measured nine morphological traits in 121 captive Morelet's crocodiles Crocodylus moreletii (81 females and 40 males). Our results revealed that individuals < 2 m total length do not exhibit sexual dimorphism in morphometric characteristics. However, for crocodiles over 2 m in length, males were significantly larger than females in terms of dorsal-cranial length, cranial width, snout width and snout-ventral length. In general, morphological traits demonstrated a strongly significant relationship with total length at the smaller size class of 150-200 cm length. However, in the highest size class of 250-300 cm length (large adult males), morphological traits were no longer significantly related with total length. Male crocodiles demonstrated allometric growth of cranial morphology with significantly greater increase in cranial width, snout width, and mid-snout width relative to total length at higher size classes. Morphological dimorphism and allometric growth may be associated with adaptive strategies for reproductive success.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of temperature on the growth and development of embryonic and early larval stages of a western North American amphibian, the rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa). We assigned newt eggs to different temperatures (7, 14, or 21 °C); after hatching, we re-assigned the newt larvae into the three different temperatures. Over the course of three to four weeks, we measured total length and developmental stage of the larvae. Our results indicated a strong positive relationship over time between temperature and both length and developmental stage. Importantly, individuals assigned to cooler embryonic temperatures did not achieve the larval sizes of individuals from the warmer embryonic treatments, regardless of larval temperature. Our investigation of growth and development at different temperatures demonstrates carry-over effects and provides a more comprehensive understanding of how organisms respond to temperature changes during early development.  相似文献

Ambient temperature can influence development through effects on metabolic rate and by inducing physiological stress. In this study, we assessed temperature effects on a host–parasitoid interaction and on the body size and brood size of emerging wasps. By examining the development at two different temperatures of the koinobiont parasitoid, Copidosoma bakeri, and its host, Agrotis ipsilon, we asked: (1) Does the growth response to temperature by A. ipsilon depend on whether the moth caterpillar is parasitized? (2) Does the allocation pattern of body size and brood size in C. bakeri change with temperature? To answer these questions, we exposed A. ipsilon larvae parasitized by C. bakeri to high or low non-lethal temperatures when A. ipsilon was in early or late larval stages and measured their development time and body mass for all four treatment combinations. We also examined the brood size and body mass of emerging wasps. Whether parasitized or not, A. ipsilon larvae decreased development time, but generally did not decrease final body mass, at the higher temperature. When parasitized A. ipsilon was exposed to the higher temperature only late in their development, enlargement of the host by the parasitoid was reduced. C. bakeri brood size significantly increased when the higher temperature was applied early in host development. We did not detect a shift with temperature in the allocation pattern of the size–number trade-off for wasp offspring, suggesting that this trade-off relationship may be under selection strong enough to yield insensitivity to temperature.  相似文献

Stable oxygen isotope analyses of U-shaped spines removed at intervals along profiles of the outer shell surface of Pinna nobilis (L) were used to reconstruct sea surface temperature (SST) and validate the periodicity of adductor muscle scar rings on the inner shell surface. Elemental ratios (Mg:Ca and Sr:Ca) of spines, determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), were compared with the SST estimated from the stable oxygen isotopic composition of the shell deposited at the same time. The elemental ratios and the stable oxygen isotopic composition recorded in the shell were significantly correlated: Mg:Ca ratio=0.0002 (seawater temperature)+0.0095 (r2=0.445), Sr:Ca ratio=0.00005 (seawater temperature)+0.0014 (r2=0.887). The ratios in the spines were highest when the SST was warmest during July and August and were lowest between January and February when the SST was minimal. The positions of the first and second adductor muscle scar rings, unlike the later rings, are often difficult to discern, and in large shells they are obscured by nacre. Seasonal patterns in the elemental ratios were used to characterise the age in regions of the outer shell surface corresponding to the first two years of shell growth. A combination of both elemental ratios and muscle scar rings were used to estimate the age and hence the growth rate of P. nobilis from three locations in the Croatian Adriatic. Annual cycles of shell growth, inferred from the seasonal pattern in the element ratios, were used to determine the season of recruitment of fan mussels at several localities along the Croatian coastline. Pinnids generally settled during late autumn and winter although one shell from Mali Ston Bay settled during the summer. P. nobilis from Mali Ston Bay exhibited the fastest growth reaching a length of ∼60 cm and an age of 9 years, whereas those from Malo jezero grew the slowest attaining a length of ∼50 cm at 12 years of age.  相似文献

In altricial birds, energy supply during growth is a major predictor of the physical condition and survival prospects of fledglings. A number of experimental studies have shown that nestling body mass and wing length can vary with particular extrinsic factors, but between-year observational data on this topic are scarce. Based on a seven-year observational study in a central European Tengmalm’s owl population we examine the effect of year, brood size, hatching order, and sex on nestling body mass and wing length, as well as the effect of prey abundance on parameters of growth curve. We found that nestling body mass varied among years, and parameters of growth curve, i.e. growth rate and inflection point in particular, increased with increasing abundance of the owl’s main prey (Apodemus mice, Microtus voles), and pooled prey abundance (Apodemus mice, Microtus voles, and Sorex shrews). Furthermore, nestling body mass varied with hatching order and between sexes being larger for females and for the first-hatched brood mates. Brood size had no effect on nestling body mass. Simultaneously, we found no effect of year, brood size, hatching order, or sex on the wing length of nestlings. Our findings suggest that in this temperate owl population, nestling body mass is more sensitive to prey abundance than is wing length. The latter is probably more limited by the physiology of the species.  相似文献

Globally temperature of marine environments is on the rise and temperature plays an important role in the life-history of reptiles. In this study, we examined the relationship between sea surface temperature and average date of hatching for American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) over a 37-year period at two nesting sites, Everglades National Park and Florida Power and Light Turkey Point Power Plant site in southern Florida. Our results indicate that hatch dates are shifting 1.5 days earlier every two years and at half that rate for the Turkey Point site, and with every 1 °C degree increase in temperature, hatching occurs about 10 days earlier in the Everglades and 6 days earlier at Turkey Point. Our results on shifting hatch dates for American crocodiles provide further details about the impacts of temperature change on crocodile life history and suggest that increased temperature may affect their phenology.

Many ectothermic vertebrates raise their preferred body temperature after feeding, likely expediting digestion. However, most studies documenting this phenomenon have relied upon laboratory thermal gradients, which grossly oversimplify an animal's environment. We explored the validity of thermal gradient methodology by investigating post-prandial thermophily in an Australian pygopodid lizard (Lialis burtonis Gray). Mean body temperatures did not differ between fed and unfed lizards in field enclosures. Feeding influenced body temperature in a thermal gradient, but in opposite directions depending on details of the methodology. When we introduced L. burtonis into the gradient at the warmer end, fed lizards had higher body temperatures than unfed conspecifics. However, the opposite was true when lizards were introduced at the cooler end. These contrasting results indicate that lizards with food in their stomachs did not seek out higher temperatures, but instead were more sedentary than unfed lizards. Our study highlights the need for caution in interpreting thermal gradient results unaccompanied by field data, and it demonstrates how minor changes in equipment design or procedures can significantly alter conclusions from laboratory studies.  相似文献

Polyps of Actinia equina are the most common sea anemones in the rocky intertidal zone of the Mediterranean coast of Israel, where they occur in one of the southernmost populations of this species in the northern hemisphere. We examined effects of feeding rate on polyp growth at ambient sea temperature for this population. Under laboratory conditions, polyps were left unfed, or were fed with brine shrimp (Artemia) once every 2 weeks, once a week, or twice a week. Of the four experimental treatments, only feeding twice a week resulted in polyp growth; under all other regimes, the sea anemones lost body mass. We conclude that a high rate of feeding is required at sea temperatures in the eastern Mediterranean, where these sea anemones may have high metabolic rates relative to more northern populations.  相似文献

Population decline and a shift in the geographical distribution of some ectothermic animals have been attributed to climatic warming. Here, we show that rises in water temperature of a few degrees, while within the thermal window for locomotor performance, may be detrimental to diving behaviour in air-breathing ectotherms (turtles, crocodilians, marine iguanas, amphibians, snakes and lizards). Submergence times and internal and external body temperature were remotely recorded from freshwater crocodiles (Crocodylus johnstoni) while they free-ranged throughout their natural habitat in summer and winter. During summer, the crocodiles'' mean body temperature was 5.2 ± 0.1°C higher than in winter and the largest proportion of total dive time was composed of dive durations approximately 15 min less than in winter. Diving beyond 40 min during summer required the crocodiles to exponentially increase the time they spent on the surface after the dive, presumably to clear anaerobic debt. The relationship was not as significant in winter, even though a greater proportion of dives were of a longer duration, suggesting that diving lactate threshold (DLT) was reduced in summer compared with winter. Additional evidence for a reduced DLT in summer was derived from the stronger influence body mass exerted upon dive duration, compared to winter. The results demonstrate that the higher summer body temperature increased oxygen demand during the dive, implying that thermal acclimatization of the diving metabolic rate was inadequate. If the study findings are common among air-breathing diving ectotherms, then long-term warming of the aquatic environment may be detrimental to behavioural function and survivorship.  相似文献

In preparation for hibernation, golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) must deposit sufficient amounts of lipid during the summer to survive winter hibernation. We conducted an experiment from May 1998 to February 1999 to examine the effects of caloric restriction on the body composition (lipid and fat-free mass) and hibernation of golden-mantled ground squirrels. Ground squirrels were either provided with food ad lib. (controls) or with only enough food to maintain a constant body mass throughout the experiment (calorically restricted). Changes in body composition were followed using total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC). Implanted data loggers that recorded body temperature were used to determine when ground squirrels entered their first torpor bout and the lengths of torpor bouts. Body composition did not change in the calorically restricted ground squirrels between May and September, while both lipid and fat-free mass increased in the controls. However, from September to February, calorically restricted ground squirrels lost only fat-free mass, not lipid mass, but controls lost both lipid and fat-free mass. Calorically restricted ground squirrels entered their first torpor bout about 4 wk after controls, but the torpor bout duration (or length) during hibernation did not differ between the two groups. These results show that ground squirrels maintain body composition during caloric restriction, and the limited quantities of stored lipid have an effect on when hibernation begins but not on torpor bout length.  相似文献

Dinosaur fossils predict body temperatures   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Perhaps the greatest mystery surrounding dinosaurs concerns whether they were endotherms, ectotherms, or some unique intermediate form. Here we present a model that yields estimates of dinosaur body temperature based on ontogenetic growth trajectories obtained from fossil bones. The model predicts that dinosaur body temperatures increased with body mass from approximately 25 °C at 12 kg to approximately 41 °C at 13,000 kg. The model also successfully predicts observed increases in body temperature with body mass for extant crocodiles. These results provide direct evidence that dinosaurs were reptiles that exhibited inertial homeothermy.  相似文献

It has been documented in some reptiles that thermal environment can induce variation in sex ratio and morphological phenotypes of offspring. Here, the viviparous lizards (Eremias multiocellata) were maintained under different temperatures during pregnancy to test the effects of this treatment on sexual and morphological phenotypes of offspring, and to investigate whether this lizard is subject to temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). The warmer temperatures resulted in shorter gestation periods and a higher ratio of male: female births; however, gestation temperature did not affect the neonates’ body mass or snout–vent length (SVL). The gestation temperatures also had significant effects on the mean litter size. Therefore, our results show that the viviparous lizard E. multiocellata might be a TSD species, providing the mothers the opportunity to manipulate the sex ratio of their offspring.  相似文献

It is known that physicochemical conditions (e.g., pH, temperature, and ionic strength) affect the size of trichomonads. In this study, the sizes of 4 isolates of Trichomonas vaginalis cultured for more than a year (called "old T") and 3 isolates freshly isolated from vaginitis cases (called "fresh T") were compared by scanning electron microscopy. Although the fresh T had shorter body length, body width, and flagellar length than old T, total length (about 26 µm), including body length, flagella length, and axostyle length was almost the same in the 2 groups. A striking difference was observed between the axostyles of the 2 groups; the axostyle length of the fresh T (8.2 µm) was more than twice as long as that of the old T (4.0 µm). However, in several parasitology textbooks, the length of T. vaginalis is said to vary widely from 7 to 32 µm, and its undulating membrane is said to extend about half way (53.5%) to the posterior end of the body. On the other hand, in our study, the undulating membrane was observed to extend more than 3/4 of the body length (72.1%) in old T, whereas in fresh T it could not be measured. Taken together, we suggest that T. vaginalis averages 26 (21-32) µm in total length, with 9.5 (7.4-11.4) µm of body length and 6.8 (5.3-7.7) µm of width, and its undulating membrane extending 3/4 of its body length. Therefore, these findings may provide useful information for morphological characteristics of T. vaginalis.  相似文献

Variations in body temperature (Tb) of lizards can be partially explained by intrinsic factors such as sex, ontogeny and body size. Liolaemus lutzae is a lizard species restricted to restingas in the Brazilian coast in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Herein, we studied sexual dimorphism and influences of sex, ontogeny, and body size to the Tb of L. lutzae. Adult males were larger than adult females, probably due to both intersexual selection and intra-sexual selection. There was intersexual difference in lizards' Tb (males hotter than females), but Tb did not differ after factored out for the effects of body size. The mean Tb of juvenile lizards was higher than that of adults after factored out for the effect of body mass. It is possible that adults may have excluded juveniles from microhabitats with better thermal regimes. Also, this might have occurred due to requirements of juveniles to maintain high growth rates. Forage searching for prey by juveniles also exposes them to high environmental temperatures. Juveniles also may have higher Tb than co-specific adults (relative to body mass) to favor prey capture. In absolute values, adult lizards tended to use microhabitats with lower temperatures than that used by juveniles, possibly to avoid risks of overheating and death. Body temperature and snout–vent length were positively related, as well as body temperature and body mass, presumably caused by the thermal inertia of the bodies (trend of a body to resist to changes in its temperature). Intrinsic factors such as sex, ontogeny and body size can affect the thermal ecology of L. lutzae, despite coastal habitat features to which they are exposed also influences the body temperature of active lizards in restinga habitats.  相似文献
