The host preference behaviour of the generalist aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemaniwas investigated using a Y-tube olfactometer. Female A. colemanishowed a preference for the host-plant complex on which they had been reared, even though the same aphid host was involved, demonstrating a host plant preference. This preference was not evident when the parasitoids were dissected from their mummies prior to adult emergence. Host plant preference exhibited during host selection appeared to be induced by chemical cues encountered on the mummy case at the time of emergence, but preferences could be changed by subsequent foraging experiences. It is concluded that plant chemical cues play a major role in determining initial preferences through a process of emergence conditioning but that learning processes, involving cues encountered during oviposition in or contact with the host, can modify these initial preferences. 相似文献

Abstract The behavioral responses of Microplitis mediator were measured in a four‐armed olfactometer. Leaves extract of the suitable host plant of its insect host, cotton, elicited higher olfactory responses; while leaves extract of the less suitable host plant of its insect host, tomato or tobacco, elicited moderate responses. Volatiles from the least suitable host plant of its insect host, hot pepper, elicited the lowest responses. The different preferences to four plant leaves extracts suggested that M. mediator could discriminate between suitable and less suitable host plants of its insect host by semiochemicals. Green leaf volatiles (GLVs), cis‐3‐hexen‐1‐yl acetate, hexanal, and nonan‐1‐ol, are the most attractive compound among the 7 tested compounds. The parasitoids preferred host‐damaged plant to undamaged plant, suggesting that they were able to distinguish between host and non‐host of their insect host through varying chemical blends. Experience with cotton leaves extract prior to experiment enhanced their responses to the same odor. 相似文献

The preference–performance hypothesis predicts that moth behaviour links plant variations with caterpillar attack and distribution, and the plant‐age hypothesis states that specialist herbivores are more successful in exploring younger plant tissue. We integrated these predictions to investigate underlying mechanisms by which moths and caterpillars of Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) track and exploit within‐plant variability of leaf age and stratification. We measured leaf proteins, glucosinolates and fibre, as well as larval choice, developmental performance, and moth oviposition preference with regard to leaf age classes (young, mature and senescent) of three varieties (collard, cauliflower and cabbage) of the main host plant Brassica oleracea L. Larvae consistently fit the prediction that specialist herbivores prefer and perform better on young, upper leaves that have the highest protein level, despite the highest content of defence compounds. Conversely, moths laid more eggs on fibrous and less nutritious leaves from the lower and senescent stratum. We argue that the leaf stratification of host plants imposes conflicting selective pressures concerning offspring feeding and protection on adult females. If egg mortality is catastrophic on the upper nutritious leaves in a particular microclimatic context (e.g. sun, heat, winds, drought or rain‐washing), then oviposition preference will remain for the suboptimal lower and senescent leaves. The ability of larvae to spread upwards over the plant to access the more nutritious leaf stratum is critical when eggs are preferentially laid on the protective low‐quality leaves. 相似文献

Host plant cues are known to shape insect–host plant association in many insect groups. More pronounced associations are generally manifested in specialist herbivores, but little is known in generalist herbivores. We used a polyphagous native beetle from New Zealand, bronze beetle, Eucolaspis sp. ‘Hawkes Bay’ (Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae) to explore the role of olfaction in locating host plants and local adaptation. We also tested the role of other cues in the degree of acceptance or rejection of hosts. Adult Eucolaspis beetles were attracted to fresh leaf volatiles from apple and blackberry (Rosaceae). Male and female beetles responded similarly to olfactory cues of host plants. An indication of evolutionary affiliation was observed in olfactory preferences of geographically isolated conspecific populations. We found that geographically isolated populations of the beetles differ in their olfactory responses and exhibit some degree of local adaptation. However, irrespective of geographical and ecological associations, blackberry was preferred over apple as a feeding plant, and another novel plant, bush lawyer (Rubus australis), was readily accepted by 53.25% of the tested beetles. We show that plant volatiles play an important role in host location by Eucolaspis, but the acceptance or rejection of a particular host could also involve visual and contact cues. 相似文献

1 Seventeen non‐host angiosperm bark volatiles, seven of which are antennally active to Ips pini (Say), the pine engraver (PE), were tested for their ability to disrupt the response of the PE to pheromone‐baited traps. 2 Four green leaf volatiles (GLVs) were tested [1‐hexanol (Z)‐3‐hexen‐1‐ol, hexanal, and (E)‐2‐hexenal]. None had any disruptive effect singly, as a group or in all possible blends based on functional groups, despite the fact that the two aldehydes were antennally active. These compounds may have, in some instances, actually masked the disruptive effect of other compounds. The PE thus differs in its response from other Scolytidae, including other Ips spp. 3 Eight non‐host volatiles that were antennally active to other bark beetles, but not to PEs, had no disruptive effect, validating the use of coupled gas chromatographic‐electroantennographic detection analyses to detect compounds with potential behavioural activity. 4 The bicyclic spiroacetal conophthorin, (E)‐7‐methyl‐1,6‐dioxaspiro[4.5]decane, was disruptive when tested alone. When blends of two aldehydes [salicylaldehyde and nonanal] plus an alcohol and a phenol [benzyl alcohol and guaiacol] were combined with conophthorin, an enhanced disruptive effect was revealed. No single compound, other than conophthorin, disrupted the pheromone‐positive response and no blend that did not contain conophthorin was consistently disruptive to both sexes. Conophthorin seems to be a critical component in the non‐host angiosperm message for I. pini during its host selection phase. 5 Combination of the repellent synomones, verbenone and ipsenol, with the five disruptive non‐host volatiles may provide a potent treatment to protect trees, logs or stands from attack by the PE. 相似文献

Olfaction is of major importance for survival and reproduction in moths. Males possess highly specific and sensitive olfactory receptor neurones to detect female sex pheromones. However, the capacity of male moths to respond to host‐plant volatiles is relatively neglected and the role that such responses could play in the sensory ecology of moths is still not fully understood. The present study aims to identify host‐plant stimuli for the European grape berry moth Eupoecilia ambiguella Hb. (Tortricidae, Lepidoptera), a major pest of vine in Europe. Headspace volatiles from Vitis vinifera L. cv. Pinot Noir, Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris and five other host‐plant species comprising five different families are analyzed by gas chromatography linked to electroantennogram (EAG) recording from male E. ambiguella antennae and by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry. This procedure identifies 32 EAG‐active compounds, among them the aliphatic compounds 1‐hexanol, (Z)‐3‐hexenol, (Z)‐3‐hexenyl acetate and 1‐octen‐3‐ol; the terpenes limonene, β‐caryophyllene and (E)‐4,8‐dimethyl‐1,3,7‐nonatriene; and the aromatic compounds benzaldehyde and methyl salicylate. Male and female E. ambiguella show similar EAG response amplitudes to individual chemical stimuli and also to mixtures of plant volatiles, as represented by essential oils from ten other plant species. This possibly indicates a common role for plant compounds in the sensory ecology of the two sexes of E. ambiguella. 相似文献

Two models that explain variation in behaviour associated with locating and accepting different habitats (host plants) are described and analyzed. One model describes the dynamics of search-mode ontogeny in Battus philenor butterflies. This model predicts that the proportion of females using either of two search modes at any given time reflects an equilibrium between the rate at which females switch from using a narrow-leaf search mode to using a broad-leaf search mode and the rate at which the opposite switch is made. Preliminary data suggest that the model predicts reasonably well the observed seasonal change in predominant search mode in the field. The second model, really a set of related models, describes the dynamics of genes that influence searching behaviour. Several predictions of these models are: (1) gentic variation for proportional allocation of offspring to different habitats should be more common under soft-selection regimes than under hard-selection regimes. (2) Polyphagy should be more common under soft selection than under hard selection. (3) Whether changes in the relative abundances or relative quality of different habitats lead to evolutionary change in apportionment of offspring to habitats depends in a complex way on mode of population regulation, method of search, type of limitation of fecundity and genetic properties of loci affecting preference. Although the two types of models superficially appear to address different types of behavioural variation, they may be used in a complementary fashion to understand the evolution of habitat selection behaviour. 相似文献

The effects of individual phenolic glucosides and total glucoside fractions on the feeding behaviour of three willowfeeding leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) were tested in the laboratory. Feeding preferences of the tested leaf beetles were strongly influenced by certain phenolic glucosides which are typical secondary compounds of willows (Salicaceae:Salix). Two of the tested leaf beetles,Galerucella lineola andLochmaea capreae showed rather similar responses to glucoside treatments. Both of them were strongly stimulated by total glucoside fractions fromSalix triandra and by its major glucoside salidroside. The third species,Phatora vitellinae, was attracted most by the fractions fromS. myrsinifolia andS. pentandra, and by two related salicylate glucosides, tremulacin and salicortin. Food selection pattern of the tested beetles in the laboratory concords fairly well with their distributions in the field and with the occurrence of phenolic glucosides in their host willows. Phenolic glucoside extracts stimulated more feeding than individual pure glucosides. This indicates that different compounds have synergistic effects in the feeding behaviour of leaf beetles. Our results clearly show that willow leaf beetles select their food based on phenolic glucosides of their host plants. 相似文献

Recent studies have documented effects of plant viruses on host plants that appear to enhance transmission by insect vectors. But, almost no empirical work has explored the implications of such apparent manipulation for interactions among co-infecting pathogens. We examined single and mixed infections of two potyviruses, watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), that frequently co-occur in cucurbitaceae populations and share the same aphid vectors. We found that ZYMV isolates replicated at similar rates in single and mixed infections, whereas WMV strains accumulated to significantly lower levels in the presence of ZYMV. Furthermore, ZYMV induced changes in leaf colour and volatile emissions that enhanced aphid (Aphis gossypii) recruitment to infected plants. By contrast, WMV did not elicit strong effects on plant–aphid interactions. Nevertheless, WMV was still readily transmitted from mixed infections, despite fairing poorly in in-plant competition. These findings suggest that pathogen effects on host–vector interactions may well influence competition among co-infecting pathogens. For example, if non-manipulative pathogens benefit from the increased vector traffic elicited by manipulative competitors, their costs of competition may be mitigated to some extent. Conversely, the benefits of manipulation may be limited by free-rider effects in systems where there is strong competition among pathogens for host resources and/or access to vectors. 相似文献

Theoretical studies have suggested that the evolution of habitat (host) races, regarded as a prelude to sympatric speciation, requires strong trade-offs in adaptation to different habitats: alleles that improve fitness in some habitats and have deleterious effects of similar magnitude in other habitats must be segregating in the population. I argue that such trade-offs are not necessary; the evolution of habitat races can also be driven by genetic variation due to loci that affect fitness in one habitat and are neutral or nearly so in others, that is, when performance in different habitats is genetically independent. One source of such genetic variation are deleterious mutations with habitat-specific fitness effects. I use deterministic two-locus and multilocus models to show that the presence of such mutations in the gene pool results in indirect selection favoring habitat fidelity or habitat preference over acceptance of both suitable habitats. This leads to the evolution of largely genetically isolated populations that use different habitats, from a single panmictic population of individuals accepting both habitats. This study suggests that the conditions favoring habitat race formation, and thus possibly sympatric speciation, are much less stringent than previously thought. 相似文献

In herbivorous insects, host selection involves various sensory modalities (sight, smell, taste), but the contact chemoreceptors capable of detecting stimuli both from host and non‐host plants play an important role in the final steps of oviposition behavior. Female butterflies scratch and drum the leaf surface and taste the compounds present in plant saps with their tarsal chemosensilla. We assumed that tarsal taste sensitivity may be related to the breadth of host selection in ovipositing females of Papilio hospitonGéné (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae). The spike activity of tarsal taste basiconic sensilla was recorded in response to stimulation with NaCl, bitter compounds, and carbohydrates, with the aim of characterizing the gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) and of comparing the response patterns in the light of differences in acceptability of host plants. Then we studied the sensitivity of GRNs to saps of the host plants Ferula communis L., Peucedanum paniculatumLoisel, Pastinaca latifolia (Duby) DC. (all Apiaceae), and Ruta lamarmorae Bacch., Brullo et Giusso (Rutaceae), and evaluated the relationship between taste sensitivity and oviposition preference. The results indicate that (1) each sensillum houses sugar‐, bitter‐, and salt‐sensitive cells; (2) the spike activity of the gustatory neurons in response to plant saps produces a different response pattern across all active GRNs; and (3) the number of eggs laid on each plant is highest on F. communis and lowest on R. lamarmorae. These results suggest that the varying activity of the tarsal GRNs may affect host plant acceptability and that ovipositing females of P. hospiton seem to be able to discriminate between host plants. 相似文献

Oviposition preference is considered to be one of the most important factors behind patterns of host use among herbivorous insects. However, preference is defined as host plant choice under equal host abundance and availability, and it is likely that frequency-dependent effects will alter the actual pattern of host use beyond what preference trials reveals. The effects of such alterations are poorly known but could be important for the understanding of specialization and host shifts. We investigated how changes in frequency of a preferred and a less preferred host affected movement patterns and egg deposition within and among patches in a polyphagous butterfly, Polygonia c-album. Two experiments were carried out in large (8 × 30 m) outdoor cages, artificially divided into distinct patches with different frequencies of the two hosts: one that allowed for limited movement between patches and one that did not. There was a clear effect of frequency on patch selection; females spent more time in and laid more eggs in patches with a high frequency of the preferred host, which will potentially have a large effect on host use by modifying encounter rates in favor of the preferred host. However, there was no significant frequency-dependent plant choice within patches in any experiment. Instead, results indicate that females are distributing their eggs among plants species according to specific likelihoods of oviposition, independent of encounter rates, which is compatible with a strategy of risk-spreading.Co-ordinating editor: N. 1. Foliar trichomes clearly reduce chewing damage and efficiency of movement by some insect herbivores, but the effect of trichomes on insect oviposition is less well characterised. Trichomes are likely to have particularly strong, negative effects on species that require secure attachment of the egg to the leaf epidermis for successful transition to the feeding stage – a group that includes many leaf mining insects. 2. One such species, Micrurapteryx salicifoliella, must initially enter leaf cells directly from an egg adhered to the cuticle, but later instars can move between leaves and initiate new mines from the leaf exterior. 3. Natural patterns of occurrence by M. salicifoliella were quantified on 10 sympatric Salix species varying in trichome expression to test whether trichomes were associated with reduced oviposition, larval survival and leaf damage. 4. Mean egg density and leaf mining damage were negatively related to mean trichome density across Salix species. Survival of M. salicifoliella from egg to pupa was positively related to trichome density, suggesting that initiation of new mines by late‐instar larvae was not adversely affected by trichomes. There was no evidence that trichomes benefited leaf miner larvae indirectly by decreasing density‐dependent mortality; rather, the positive relationship between trichome density and larval survival may reflect less effective chemical defence by Salix species expressing high trichome density. 5. The results suggest that foliar trichomes serve as an effective defence against M. salicifoliella by deterring oviposition, but do not reduce the survivorship of those individuals that successfully transition from egg to larva. 相似文献

On the island of Sardinia the lepidopteran Papilio hospiton uses Ferula communis as exclusive host plant. However, on the small island of Tavolara, adult females lay eggs on Seseli tortuosum, a plant confined to the island. When raised in captivity on Seseli only few larvae grew beyond the first–second instar. Host specificity of lepidopterans is determined by female oviposition preferences, but also by larval food acceptance, and adult and larval taste sensitivity may be related to host selection in both cases. Aim of this work was: (i) to study the taste sensitivity of larvae and ovipositing females to saps of Ferula and Seseli; (ii) to cross‐compare the spike activity of gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) to both taste stimuli; (iii) to evaluate the discriminating capability between the two saps and determine which neural code/s is/are used. The results show that: (i) the spike responses of the tarsal GRNs of adult females to both plant saps are not different and therefore they cannot discriminate the two plants; (ii) larval L‐lat GRN shows a higher activity in response to Seseli than Ferula, while the opposite occurs for the phagostimulant neurons, and larvae may discriminate between the two saps by means of multiple neural codes; (iii) the number of eggs laid on the two plants is the same, but the larval growth performance is better on Ferula than Seseli. Taste sensitivity differences may explain the absence of a positive relationship between oviposition preferences by adult females and plant acceptance and growth performance by larvae. 相似文献

The semiwild beach-feeding bottlenose dolphins ( Tursiops aduncus ) of Monkey Mia, Western Australia, provide an unparalleled opportunity to examine prey preference of this species. In a series of binary-choice feeding experiments, we took advantage of the animals' willingness to be fed by hand, to explore their preferences for fish species, size, and state (freshly caught or previously frozen). At the end of each beach visit, each dolphin was provided with a pair of fish but allowed to eat only the first one chosen. The dolphins appeared indifferent among the three species of fish offered to them (yellowtail trumpeter, Amniataba caudovittatus ; striped trumpeter, Pelates sexlineatus ; and western butterfish, Pentapodus vitta ), which were of similar body form and matched for mass. Overall, the dolphins showed a slight preference for the larger of two yellowtail trumpeter offered, suggesting the capability for rational choice when there was a basis for it (most likely energy in this case), although there was considerable individual variation. The dolphins did not distinguish between freshly caught and previously frozen yellowtail. The methodology we describe can be used to generate data of potential value for understanding food and habitat selection of wild dolphins, and for modifying management practices for semiwild dolphins at Monkey Mia and elsewhere. 相似文献

Foraging behaviour of Lysiphlebus testaceipes was studied in a Y-tube olfactometer. Naïve females responded to the Aphis gossypii/eggplant complex on which they had been reared, but did not show a preference for this aphid/plant complex over an uninfested eggplant, an eggplant that had been damaged by the aphid or an A. gossypii/okra complex. Females that had been allowed to forage on the A. gossypii/eggplant complex before being tested in the olfactometer showed a strong preference for an uninfested eggplant over an uninfested okra plant and for the A. gossypii/eggplant complex over an A. gossypii/okra complex, indicating that they had learned to associate eggplant-derived volatiles with host availability. When females that had been reared on the A. gossypii/eggplant complex were tested after foraging experience on the A. gossypii/okra complex, they did not show a preference for either complex, suggesting that they still retained a memory of the cues associated with the complex on which they had been reared. The efficiency of L. testaceipes as a biological control agent in peri-urban vegetable production, such as the Cuban organoponics system, potentially could be improved by producing and releasing females behaviourally primed to prefer specific host/plant complexes. 相似文献

The egg parasitoid Anagrus nigriventris Girault is an important natural enemy of the beet leafhopper, Circulifer tenellus (Baker) which has a broad host range that includes cultivated sugar beets and the weed, Russian thistle. When parasitoids were reared on leafhopper eggs deposited in sugar beets, females were attracted to sugar beet volatiles and preferred them over a blank control and over Russian thistle volatiles in Y- tube olfactometer tests. No preference was detected for either plant by female wasps that were reared on Russian thistle. Wasps reared on Russian thistle and allowed an oviposition experience on sugar beet showed a strong attraction to sugar beet volatiles; however, wasps reared on sugar beets and allowed oviposition experience on Russian thistle demonstrated no preference between the two plants. The implications of parasitoid response towards plant volatiles and their importance in biological control are discussed. 相似文献
