Young birds communicate their need to parents through complex begging displays that include visual and acoustic cues. Nestlings of interspecific brood parasites must ‘tune’ into these communication channels to secure parental care from their hosts. Various studies show that parasitic nestlings can effectively manipulate host parental behaviour through their begging calls, but how these manipulative acoustic signals develop in growing parasites remains poorly understood. We investigated the influence of social experience on begging call development in a host‐specialist brood parasite, the Screaming Cowbird Molothrus rufoaxillaris. Screaming Cowbird nestlings look and sound similar to those of the primary host, the Greyish Baywing Agelaioides badius. This resemblance is likely to be adaptive because Baywings discriminate against fledglings unlike their own and provision nests at higher rates in response to Baywing‐like begging calls than to non‐mimetic begging calls. By means of cross‐fostering and playback experiments, we tested whether the acoustic cues that elicit recognition by Baywings develop innately in Screaming Cowbird nestlings or are acquired through social experience with host parents or nest mates. Our results suggest that begging call structure was partially modulated by experience because Baywing‐reared Screaming Cowbird and host nestlings were acoustically more similar as age increased, whereas acoustic similarity between cross‐fostered and Baywing‐reared Screaming Cowbird nestlings decreased from 4–5 to 8–10 days of age. Cross‐fostered Screaming Cowbirds developed begging calls of lower minimum frequency and broader bandwidth than those of Baywing‐reared Screaming Cowbirds by the age of 8–10 days. Despite the observed differences in begging call structure, however, adult Baywings responded similarly to begging calls of 8‐ to 10‐day‐old cross‐fostered and Baywing‐reared Screaming Cowbirds, suggesting that these were functionally equivalent from the host's perspective. These findings support the idea that, although rearing environment can influence certain begging call parameters, the acoustic cues that serve for offspring recognition by Baywings develop in young Screaming Cowbirds independently of social experience.  相似文献

Coevolutionary interactions between avian brood parasites and their hosts often lead to the evolution of discrimination and rejection of parasite eggs or chicks by hosts based on visual cues, and the evolution of visual mimicry of host eggs or chicks by brood parasites. Hosts may also base rejection of brood parasite nestlings on vocal cues, which would in turn select for mimicry of host begging calls in brood parasite chicks. In cuckoos that exploit multiple hosts with different begging calls, call structure may be plastic, allowing nestlings to modify their calls to match those of their various hosts, or fixed, in which case we would predict either imperfect mimicry or divergence of the species into host-specific lineages. In our study of the little bronze-cuckoo (LBC) Chalcites minutillus and its primary host, the large-billed gerygone Gerygone magnirostris, we tested whether: (1) hosts use nestling vocalizations as a cue to discriminate cuckoo chicks; (2) cuckoo nestlings mimic the host begging calls throughout the nestling period; and (3) the cuckoo begging calls are plastic, thereby facilitating mimicry of the calls of different hosts. We found that the begging calls of LBCs are most similar to their gerygone hosts shortly after hatching (when rejection by hosts typically occurs) but become less similar as cuckoo chicks get older. Begging call structure may be used as a cue for rejection by hosts, and these results are consistent with gerygone defenses selecting for age-specific vocal mimicry in cuckoo chicks. We found no evidence that LBC begging calls were plastic.  相似文献

Kin selection theory predicts that, in species where progeny members compete for limiting parental care, individual offspring should be more prone to monopolize parental resources as their genetic relatedness to brood competitors decreases. Mixed parentage among broodmates may arise as a consequence, for example, of extra-pair fertilization or brood parasitism events. In this experimental study of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica), we reciprocally partially cross-fostered hatchlings between broods and compared the behaviour of pairs of related and unrelated broodmates in a competitive context, both under normal food provisioning regime and after mild food deprivation. We found that scramble competition for food mediated by visual and vocal solicitation displays (begging) is inversely related to relatedness among competitors, independent of their level of satiation. Nestlings may modulate their competitive behaviour according to vocal cues that vary with their origin and allow kin recognition. We also uncover direct fitness costs to both parents and offspring arising from mixed parentage in a brood, in terms of increased parental workload and reduced survival of the nestlings. Such previously neglected costs may select for reduced frequency of extra-pair fertilizations and brood parasitism in species with extensive parental care.  相似文献

Summary Nest defence is a frequent and widespread parental behaviour which enhances brood survival. We have found that in a Spanish Magpie population which is heavily parasitized by the brood parasitic Great Spotted Cuckoo, Magpies defend (1) unparasitized more frequently than parasitized nests, and (2) at the end of the nestling period more frequently than in other stages of the breeding cycle. Great Spotted Cuckoos are brood parasites, which means that their eggs are incubated and their nestlings are raised by members of a host species. Brood parasites are not thought to take care of their own offspring. However, we have found that Great Spotted Cuckoos sometimes scolded us on our regular visits to parasitized magpie nests (but never on those to unparasitized nests). Frequency of nest defence by cuckoos differed significantly among years, being significantly higher at the beginning of the study. Although sporadic observations of adult brood parasites feeding juveniles have been recorded, nest defence has not previously been suggested for any brood parasite.

Zusammenfassung Nestverteidigung ist ein häufiges und weit verbreitetes elterliches Verhalten zur Erhöhung des Bruterfolges. In einer spanischen Elsterpopulation, die sehr intensiv vom Häherkuckuck parasitiert ist, wurden unparasitierte Nester häufiger verteidigt als parasitierte, und zum Ende der Nestlingsperiode wurden Nestern häufiger verteidigt als zu früheren Phasen des Brutzyklus. Häherkuckucke sind Brutparasiten, deren Eier von den Wirtseltern bebrütet und die Nestlinge von ihnen aufgezogen werden. Solche Brutparasiten kümmern sich im allgemeinen nicht selbst um ihre Nachkommen. Manchmal jedoch haßten Häherkuckuck auf uns, wenn wir parasitierte Nester der Elster kontrollierten, während an unparasitierten Nestern ein solches Hassen niemals erfolgte. Die Häufigkeit dieser Nestverteidugung der Kuckucke variierte zwischen Jahren und war signifikant häufiger zu Beginn unserer Untersuchung. Zwar wurde gelegentlich schon Füttern der Jungvögel durch elterliche Brutparasiten beobachtet, die hier festgestellte Nestverteidung ist bisher aber von keinem Brutparasiten beschrieben.

Nestlings of many avian brood parasites are virtuosos at mimicking host nestling vocalizations, which, like egg mimicry, presumably ensures acceptance by host parents. Having been accepted, parasitic nestlings then often exaggerate the aspects of the host's display to increase parental care. Host nestlings may, in turn, exaggerate their vocalizations to keep up with the parasite, though this possibility has not been evaluated. We experimentally parasitized song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) nests with a brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) chick to evaluate how host nestlings respond. Vocalizations emitted from experimentally parasitized nests were higher in frequency, and louder, than those from unparasitized nests, consistent with the cowbird exaggerating its signalling. In response, host nestlings exaggerated the frequency and amplitude of their vocalizations, such that they resembled the cowbird's while they 'scaled back' on calls per parental provisioning bout. Sparrows in parasitized nests were fed equally often as sparrows in unparasitized nests, suggesting that exaggerating some aspects of vocalization while scaling back on others can help host nestlings confronted with a cowbird. Our results support the recently proposed hypothesis that signalling in parasitized nests involves a dynamic interaction between parasitic and host nestlings, rather than a one-way process of mimicry by the parasite.  相似文献

The number of offspring surviving until independence is the fundamental drive in the evolution of parental care. Because of the related costs, parental investment must be balanced with essential resources for parents themselves, among the resources available in the environment under the current parental condition. It is advantageous for parents to adjust their level of investment to the number of offspring; however, there is little evidence that parents employ numerical competence in adjusting their investment level. We investigated how parents respond to experimentally manipulated brood sizes in a passerine species, known as a host of a brood parasitic cuckoo whose chicks presumably deceive their hosts numerically. Parents reduced their provisioning to broods of reduced sizes, whereas parents did not increase provisioning to enlarged broods compared to that in the control condition. These parental responses can be attributed to the response of chicks to the experimental treatments compared to that in the control: chicks lowered begging intensity in the reduced condition, while they did not intensify being in the enlarged condition. Further analyses revealed that eagerness of parents to respond to chick begging intensity differed between the experimental treatments: strong parental response was detected toward begging chicks only in the reduced condition. We propose that the detected equivocality of parental responses might be related to the difference in the number of chicks between the unmanipulated and experimentally manipulated broods, the former reflecting the initial parental decision on the amount of resources to allocate to the brood.  相似文献

When a parent's parentage differs across breeding attempts, established theory predicts that the parent should invest more in a brood when perceived parentage is high. We present a model of parental investment in which offspring unrelated to the parent have a competitive advantage over the parent's own offspring and take a larger share of investment. We show that this can weaken or, if the competitive advantage is great, reverse the predicted relationship between perceived parentage and parental investment. A moderate competitive advantage of extra-pair young over within-pair young could partly explain the lack of any clear relationship between paternal care and paternity in many studies, and could easily arise if females choose extra-pair partners for good genes. Our results are also relevant to interspecific avian brood parasitism. As parasites reared together with host offspring are often superior competitors, their hosts could benefit from increasing investment in response to suspected parasitism.  相似文献

Brood parasites must first find their host's nests before they can parasitize them, yet little has been reported about the nest searching behavior of brood parasites, even for the well-studied Molothrus cowbirds. A few studies have attempted to identify particular searching cues used by cowbirds for discovering nests, but all have been unable to discriminate among two alternative hypotheses: the necessity of adult hosts as cues for nest-finding (the Host Activity Hypothesis) versus the discovery of nests by search of habitat without need for presence of an adult host (the Habitat Search Hypothesis). In this study, we developed a field experiment that improved our ability to discriminate among these hypotheses. We varied the visual conspicuousness of real, but inactive, passerine nests that we placed in situations typical of the particular species involved and supplied the nests with fresh passerine eggs. We predicted that if adult hosts were necessary to elicit brood parasitism, no experimental nests would be parasitized. Further, if cowbirds find nests by searching habitat without regard for host presence, we predicted that conspicuous nests would be parasitized more frequently than inconspicuous nests. Despite the extraordinarily high levels of cowbird parasitism on natural nests in the study region, none of the experimental nests was parasitized. Thus, host activity appeared to be a critical cue for eliciting parasitism. Although our results are consistent with the Host Activity Hypothesis, discriminating between nest discovery with subsequent parasitism and nest discovery without subsequent parasitism remains problematic. We argue that the presence of the adult host at or near a nest is essential at some stage of the parasitism event, either for initial discovery of the nest or for timing the laying of the parasitic egg in a manner that maximizes its likelihood of successfully producing offspring.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Research on African elephant (Loxodonta africana) vocal communication has increased in recent years, yet there has been very little data collected on the vocal production of infant African elephants. Vocalizations were recorded from a group of five adult female African elephants and 3 dependent offspring (1 male and 2 female) at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Florida, U.S.A., using custom-designed audio-recording collars worn by the adult females. We measured both source and filter features of infant ‘rumble’ vocalizations made during affiliative social interactions and after cessation of nursing from adult females. Rumble vocalizations produced in the ‘nurse cessation’ context exhibited an upward shift in formant frequency locations, compared to rumbles produced during the ‘affiliation’ context. Additionally, call duration increased and fundamental frequencies decreased after nurse cessations for the male, but both females showed the opposite acoustic response. When infant rumbles accompanied nurse cessations, nursing was more likely to resume within 30 seconds compared to nurse cessations without vocalizations. These results suggest that infant rumbles associated with cessation of nursing reflect the motivational state of infants and may influence maternal responsiveness.  相似文献

1. One of the fundamental insights of behavioural ecology is that resources influence breeding systems. For instance, when food resources are plenty, one parent is able to care for the young on its own, so that the other parent can desert and became polygamous. We investigated this hypothesis in the context of classical polyandry when females may have several mates within a single breeding season, and parental duties are carried out largely by the male. 2. We studied a precocial wader, the Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus, that exhibits variable brood care such that the chicks may be raised by both parents, only by the female or, more often, only by the male. The timing of female desertion varies: some females desert their brood at hatching of the eggs and lay a clutch for a new mate, whereas other females stay with their brood until the chicks fledge. Kentish plovers are excellent organisms with which to study breeding system evolution, as some of their close relatives exhibit classical polyandry (Eurasian dotterel Eudromias morinellus, mountain plover Charadrius montanus), whereas others are polygynous (northern lapwing Vanellus vanellus). 3. Kentish plovers raised their broods in two habitats in our study site in southern Turkey: saltmarsh and lakeshore. Food intake was higher on the lakeshore than in the saltmarsh as judged from feeding behaviour of chicks and adults. As the season proceeded and the saltmarsh dried out, the broods moved toward the lakeshore. 4. As the density of plovers increased on lakeshore, the parents spent more time defending their young, and female parents stayed with their brood longer on the lakeshore. 5. We conclude that the influence of food abundance on breeding systems is more complex than currently anticipated. Abundant food resources appear to have profound implications on spatial distribution of broods, and the social interactions between broods constrain female desertion and polyandry.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   High rates of brood parasitism are generally associated with agricultural landscapes, but recent evidence suggests that urbanization may also increase the likelihood of brood parasitism. I evaluated the extent to which brood parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds ( Molothrus ater ) was explained by differences in (1) body size of adult hosts, presumably relating to the ability to defend nest from cowbirds, (2) nest placement in substrate and relative to habitat edges, (3) habitat structure surrounding nests, (4) host density, (5) cowbird abundance, both absolute and relative to host numbers, (6) landscape composition, and (7) Julian date. From 2001 to 2006, I monitored nest fate and measured vegetation characteristics surrounding nests of Acadian Flycatcher ( Empidonax virescens ) breeding in mature riparian forests in central Ohio, USA. The likelihood that a nest would be parasitized was best explained by the number of understory stems surrounding the nest and, to a lesser extent, by the amount of urbanization in the surrounding 1-km-radius landscape. Parasitized nests were surrounded by 1.6 times more stems and nearly twice the amount of urbanization than nonparasitized nests. Numbers of understory stems were positively associated with increasing urbanization, primarily due to invasion of urban forests by Amur honeysuckle ( Lonicera maackii ). Thus, urban-associated changes in habitat characteristics around nests may be important contributors to the greater vulnerability of urban nests to brood parasitism than nests in more rural landscapes. This pattern suggests that ecological restoration, such as removing exotic shrubs, may be an effective strategy to ameliorate certain negative consequences of urbanization near wooded reserves.  相似文献

Using DNA extracted from embryos, weobtain microsatellite genotypes of offspring.We demonstrate that separate extractionsperformed on the embryo and shell from a singleegg can provide DNA from the embryo and itsmother, respectively. This single-egg approachfor obtaining both maternal and embryonic DNAsimplifies paternity analyses because allelesunique to the embryo can be considered paternalin origin. The song‐control system in the brain of songbirds is important for the production and acquisition of song and exhibits both remarkable seasonal plasticity and some of the largest neural sex differences observed in vertebrates. We measured sex and seasonal differences in two nuclei of the song‐control system of brood‐parasitic brown‐headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and closely‐related non‐parasitic red‐winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus). These species differ in both the development and function of song. Brown‐headed cowbirds have a larger sex difference in song than red‐winged blackbirds. Female cowbirds never sing, whereas female blackbirds do though much less than males. In cowbirds, song primarily functions in mate choice and males modify their song as they approach sexual maturity and interact with females. In red‐winged blackbirds, song is used primarily in territorial defence and is crystalized earlier in life. We found that the HVC was more likely to be discernable in breeding female blackbirds than in breeding female cowbirds. Compared to males, females had a smaller HVC and a smaller robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA). However, females had higher doublecortin immunoreactivity (DCX+) in HVC, a measure of neurogenesis. Consistent with sex differences in song, the sex difference in RA volume was greater in cowbirds than in blackbirds. Males of both species had a smaller HVC with higher DCX+ in post‐breeding condition than in breeding condition when song is more plastic. Sex and seasonal differences in the song‐control system were closely related to variation in song in these two icterid songbirds. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Obligate avian brood parasites can be host specialists or host generalists. In turn, individual females within generalist brood parasites may themselves be host specialists or generalists. The shiny cowbird Molothrus bonariensis is an extreme generalist, but little is known about individual female host fidelity. We examined variation in mitochondrial control region sequences from cowbird chicks found in nests of four common Argentinean hosts. Haplotype frequency distributions differed among cowbird chicks from nests of these hosts, primarily because eggs laid in nests of house wrens Troglodytes aedon differed genetically from those laid in nests of the other three hosts (chalk-browed mockingbird Mimus saturninus, brown-and-yellow marshbird Pseudoleistes virescens, and rufous-collared sparrow Zonotrichia capensis). These differences in a maternally inherited marker indicate the presence of a nonrandom laying behaviour in the females of this otherwise generalist brood parasite, which may be guided by choice for nest type, as house wrens nest in cavities whereas the other three species are open cup nesters.  相似文献

Parental care of eggs by male upland bullies Gobiomorphus breviceps was studied in the field and in the laboratory, with special emphasis on the effect of infection by trematode cysts. In the field, the proportion of old eggs in the nest affected the time taken by males to return to their nest after being chased away, but only in one year of the study. No effects of male size, male parasite load, number of eggs per nest or nest characteristics were observed. In the laboratory, heavily-infected males spent more time fanning their eggs than lightly-infected ones. Smaller males also tended to spend more time fanning than large males. Male size, parasite load and number of eggs per nest had no measurable effect on the aggressiveness of guarding males towards intruders, weight loss in males or egg incubation time. Parental investments did not vary as a function of age of the eggs. All males cannibalized some of their eggs, and there appeared to be a threshold brood size below which males consumed their entire brood. Overall, results were not consistent with those of studies on other fish species, and indicate that rules of investment in parental care may be different for fish inhabiting harsh, unpredictable environments.  相似文献

Parents of a variety of animal species distribute critical resources among their offspring according to the intensity of begging displays. Kin selection theory predicts that offspring behave more selfishly in monopolizing parental care as relatedness with competitors declines. We cross-fostered two eggs between barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) clutches and compared the loudness of begging between mixed and control broods under normal feeding conditions and after a period of food deprivation. Begging loudness was higher in mixed broods under normal but not poor feeding conditions. Survival was reduced in mixed than control broods. Call features varied according to parentage, possibly serving as a cue for self-referent phenotype matching in mixed broods. This is the first evidence within a vertebrate species that competitive behaviour among broodmates depends on their relatedness. Thus, kin recognition and relatedness may be important determinants of communication among family members, care allocation and offspring viability in barn swallows.  相似文献
