Songbirds produce calls as well as song. This paper summarizes four studies of the zebra finch long call, used by both sexes in similar behavioral contexts. Female long calls are acoustically simpler than male long calls, which include acoustic features learned during development. Production of these male-typical features requires an intact nucleus robustus archistriatalis, the sexually-dimorphic source of the telencephalic projection to brainstem vocal effectors. In experiments that quantified the long calls produced in response to long call playbacks, intact adult zebra finch males, but not females, show a categorical preference for the long calls of females over those of males. Experiments with synthetic stimuli showed that males classify long call stimuli that they hear by gender, using both spectral and temporal information, but that females use only temporal information. Juvenile males (<45 days) did not show the categorical preference, but it emerged during the same period when the robustus archistriatalis matures anatomically and the first male-typical vocalizations are produced. Adult males with robustus archistriatalis lesions lost the categorical preference for female long calls, suggesting that the robustus archistriatalis plays a role in long call discrimination. These results demonstrate that calls complement song as a potent tool for studying the neurobiology of vocal communication.  相似文献

Establishing the habitat preferences of early hominin taxa is a necessary, though difficult, requirement for understanding the interaction between environmental change and hominin evolution. The environments typically associated with Australopithecus robustus have been reconstructed as predominantly open grasslands situated within a habitat mosaic that included a more wooded component with a nearby perennial water source. Most studies have concluded that the open grassland component represents the habitat preference of the hominins. In this study we investigate indicators of habitat association of A. robustus that are preserved in the animal paleocommunities represented in a series of fossil cave infills in the Bloubank Valley of South Africa, including Swartkrans, Sterkfontein, Kromdraai, and Coopers. Testing for conditions of isotaphonomy reveals a potential bias relating to depositional matrix and perhaps accumulating agent, though such a bias has not unduly influenced the taxonomic composition the assemblages. Correspondence analysis of census data from modern African nature reserves demonstrates that carnivore predation patterns are indicative of animal communities, which in turn are representative of habitats. As a result, modern census data are used to document patterns of habitat preference of large herbivores, thus allowing assignment of fossil taxa to a series of broadly defined habitat categories. Correspondence analysis of fossil assemblages reveals that the abundance profile of A. robustus is most similar to that of woodland-adapted taxa. In addition, fluctuations in the relative abundance of taxa assigned to the broad habitat categories reveal a significant negative correlation between A. robustus and open grassland-adapted taxa, indicating that the more grassland-adapted taxa there are in a given assemblage, the fewer hominins there tend to be. Thus, it appears that the open grasslands that comprise the majority of the paleoenvironments associated with A. robustus do not necessarily indicate the habitat preference of the hominins. Rather, it would appear that in addition to being dietary generalists, A. robustus were also likely to have been habitat generalists.  相似文献

The southern Rocky Mountains and adjacent Intermontane Plateau Highlands region of western North America is a geographically diverse area with an active geologic history. Given the topological complexity and extensive geologic activity, organisms inhabiting this region are expected to show some degree of morphological and genetic divergence, especially populations found on the southern montane 'sky islands' of this region. Here we examine the phylogeographic history and diversification of a montane forest inhabiting harvestmen, Sclerobunus robustus, using a combination of genetic and morphological data. Divergence time estimates indicate that much of the diversification within and between major groups S. robustus predate the Pleistocene glacial cycles. The most widespread subspecies, Sclerobunus robustus robustus, is recovered as six genetically distinct, geographically cohesive mitochondrial phylogroups. Gene tree data for a single nuclear gene reveals congruent, albeit slightly more conservative, patterns of genetic divergence. Despite high levels of genetic divergence throughout their distribution, phylogroups show extreme conservation in somatic and reproductive morphology. This uncoupling of morphological and genetic differentiation may be due to morphological conservatism associated with a conserved microhabitat preference. Based on these data, it is obvious that S. robustus has undergone some level of cryptic diversification.  相似文献

Compact bone distribution and biomechanics of early hominid mandibles.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This investigation explores the effects of compact bone distribution on the biomechanical properties of the postcanine mandibular corpus of the fossil hominid taxa Australopithecus africanus and Paranthropus robustus. The mandibles of extant great apes, modern humans, and the fossil hominids are examined by computed tomography (CT), and compact bone contours are used to calculate cross-sectional biomechanical properties (cortical area, second moments of area, and Bredt's formula for torsional strength). The relative amount of compact bone is comparable in the modern and fossil mandibles, but the mechanical properties of A. africanus and P. robustus jaws are distinct in terms of the ratio of minimum to maximum second moments of area. This difference most likely represents a structural response to elevated torsional moments in the fossil hominids. Although the relative amount of compact bone in cross-section does not differ significantly between taxa by statistical criteria, A. africanus utilizes less cortical bone than P. robustus in the same manner in which Pongo is separated from the condition in other extant large-bodied hominoids. It has been suggested that the phenomenon of mandibular "robusticity" (expressed as an index of corpus breadth/corpus height) may be an effect of postcanine megadontia and/or reduced canine size in the australopithecines. Results presented here, however, indicate that it is unlikely that either factor adequately accounts for mandibular size and shape variation in early hominids.  相似文献

Adult water beetles were collected from 841 localities in the Netherlands. The distribution maps of the three species of the genus Helochares (Coleoptera; Hydrophilidae) in the Netherlands are given. They are based on specimens from museum collections and this investigation. H. lividus occurs all over the Netherlands, except for the north-east. This northern limit of its European distribution area coincides with the 8.5°C isotherm for the mean year temperature. H. obscurus is limited in its distribution to clay and peat-bog, but in the sandy coastal dune area H. obscurus replaces H. punctatus. H. punctatus is limited in its distribution to soils consisting of peat-moor or sand, but it is absent from the coastal dune area.Co-existence of H. lividus with either H. obscurus or H. punctatus occurs regularly. Co-existence of H. obscurus and H. punctatus has been observed only once, these species exclude each other by different ecological requirements. H. lividus and H. obscurus show two optima in abundance during the year which corresponds with a univoltine life-cycle. H. punctatus shows no clear maximum in abundance. However, on the basis of the presence of females carrying egg-cases and the presence of teneral adults a univoltine life-cycle for all three Helochares spp. can be deduced. A small proportion of the beetles hibernates either as larva or as pupa and emerges in spring. The distribution of Helochares spp. has been related to some environmental variables using the Index of Representation. H. lividus has a clear preference for waters with a high pH, high conductivity and high chlorinity with a luxurious vegetation of floating leaved and submerged plants on mineral soils. Occasionally running waters or waters with a low current velocity are preferred. Preferred habitats are regulated lowland streams, clay- and sand-ditches, and clay- and sand-canals. H. obscurus has a clear preference for stagnant waters with a high pH, high conductivity and high chlorinity (but the optimum is lower than for H. lividus) with a luxurious vegetation of floating leaved and submerged plants. Preferred habitats are clay- and sand-ditches. H. punctatus has a very clear preference for waters with a low pH, low conductivity and low chlorinity. With respect to vegetation and type of current the species shows no significant preferences or aversions. Preferred habitats are moorland pools, peat-canals and peat-cuttings.  相似文献

Daphnia hyalina is a cladoceran present throughthe whole year except for late summer in Maranhão,a meso-eutrophic reservoir in central Portugal. Apartfrom the influence of food, both vertebrate andinvertebrate predation pressures seem to have aneffect on D. hyalina population dynamics.Enclosure experiments were designed to assess therelative importance of both types of predation. Afterthe summer crash, D. hyalina reached highernumbers in the fishless enclosures than in the lakedespite of high predation pressure upon juveniles byAcanthocyclops robustus. Fish predation upon thelargest individuals, especially large egg bearingfemales, was responsible for the lower fertility ofthe open water population when compared with theenclosure population. In the enclosures an increase intail spine length was observed. The longer tail spineprobably offered protection from copepod predation, allowing at least some of the juveniles to coexistwith their potential predator and reach the adultstage, less susceptible to copepod predation.  相似文献

Mate searching in crustaceans depends on different communicational cues, of which chemical and visual cues are most important. Herein we examined the role of chemical and visual communication during mate searching and assessment in the rock shrimp Rhynchocinetes typus. Adult male rock shrimp experience major ontogenetic changes. The terminal molt stages (named "robustus") are dominant and capable of monopolizing females during the mating process. Previous studies had shown that most females preferably mate with robustus males, but how these dominant males and receptive females find each other is uncertain, and is the question we examined herein. In a Y-maze designed to test for the importance of waterborne chemical cues, we observed that females approached the robustus male significantly more often than the typus male. Robustus males, however, were unable to locate receptive females via chemical signals. Using an experimental set-up that allowed testing for the importance of visual cues, we demonstrated that receptive females do not use visual cues to select robustus males, but robustus males use visual cues to find receptive females. Visual cues used by the robustus males were the tumults created by agitated aggregations of subordinate typus males around the receptive females. These results indicate a strong link between sexual communication and the mating system of rock shrimp in which dominant males monopolize receptive females. We found that females and males use different (sex-specific) communicational cues during mate searching and assessment, and that the sexual communication of rock shrimp is similar to that of the American lobster, where females are first attracted to the dominant males by chemical cues emitted by these males. A brief comparison between these two species shows that female behaviors during sexual communication contribute strongly to the outcome of mate searching and assessment.  相似文献

The effect of insecticides on oviposition of Tiphia vernalis Rohwer and subsequent survival of parasitoid progeny to the cocoon stage was determined in the laboratory by using larval Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman, as the host. Insecticides tested were imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, halofenozide, chlorpyrifos, and carbaryl at labeled rates. Female T. vernalis were allowed 2 d to parasitize P. japonica larvae after the parasitoids had received a 4-d exposure to insecticide-treated soil. Another group of female T. vernalis were allowed 2 d to parasitize P. japonica larvae that had been exposed to insecticide-treated soil for 3-4 d. Percentage of parasitism of P. japonica larvae in these trials after exposure of adult parasitoids to carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, halofenozide, or imidacloprid-treated soil (23.3-50.0%) or adult parasitoids to chlorpyrifos, halofenozide, or imidacloprid-treated grubs (33.0-56.7%) was not negatively affected relative to the control treatment (21.7-54.2%). A third group of adult T. vernalis and P. japonica larvae were simultaneously exposed to chlorpyrifos or carbaryl treatments. Percentage parasitism in these trials was lower for T. vernalis adults exposed to the chlorpyrifos and carbaryl (15.0-25.0%) relative to the control (57.5-62.5%) with the exception of one trial with carbaryl (40.0%). However, exposure of the parasitoid and P. japonica to chlorpyrifos 0.5X, carbaryl 0.5X, imidacloprid, halofenozide, or thiamethoxam in several trials resulted in parasitism that was equivalent or greater than (45.0-80.0%) the untreated control (57.5-62.5%). Japanese beetle larval mortality in these trials was greater in the insecticide and parasitoid combination (97.5-100.0%) than with insecticides alone (45.0-100.0%). Percentage of survival of T. vernalis progeny to the cocoon stage was not negatively affected by a 4-d adult parasitoid exposure to carbaryl and chlorpyrifos treated soil (11.7-16.7% versus 18.3% control) or a 2-d exposure to P. japonica-treated larvae (16.7-18.3% versus 28.3% control). However, simultaneous exposure of T. vernalis progeny and P. japonica larvae to chlorpyrifos- and carbaryl-treated soil resulted in no parasitoids surviving to the cocoon stage. Between neonicotinoids, thiamethoxam had more adverse impact on percentage parasitism (52.5%) and survival to the cocoon stage (10.0%) than imidacloprid (80.0 and 32.5%, respectively). Results of this study indicate soil incorporation of imidacloprid and halofenozide had minimal effect on the number of P. japonica larvae parasitized by T. vernalis or survival of T. vernalis progeny to the cocoon stage; therefore, they are more suitable for use with T. vernalis. In contrast, chlorpyrifos, carbaryl, and thiamethoxam lowered the number of T. vernalis progeny surviving to the cocoon stage, and carbaryl and chlorpyrifos reduced the number of P. japonica larvae parasitized. The soil incorporation of insecticides is discussed as one explanation for the minimal effects of some insecticides on T. vernalis.  相似文献

1. Seasonal field data showed a positive correlation between the tail spine length of Daphnia hyalina × galeata and the density of the copepod Acanthocyclops robustus . Laboratory experiments were designed to assess the mechanisms underlying the induction of tail spine elongation and to test whether this morphology reduced predation on Daphnia juveniles.
2. Both the elongated tail spine morph and control spine morph produced progeny with elongated tail spine when exposed to copepods. Instar increments, calculated from individual body length, showed that individual growth decreased in the presence of copepods. This decrease in individual growth was less pronounced in spined morphs relative to control morphs.
3. Copepods exhibited significantly higher feeding rates on control morph juveniles compared to elongated tail spine morph juveniles.
4. All Daphnia matured at instar 5 even though the control morph neonates took 24–30 more hours to mature in the presence of copepods than in the absence of copepods. Enlarged body and spine lengths of progeny coincided with reduced progeny number during the first six reproductive instars. The disadvantage of the reduced offspring number produced per female was balanced by enhanced survivorship of progeny subjected to copepod predation.  相似文献

Collectively, populations of Acanthocyclops vernalis, a species complex of freshwater copepods, are remarkably similar as to morphology and DNA content, despite variability in chromosome number. Reproductive isolation had been reported among some populations, but with each new investigation the species boundaries and factors that may influence them appeared less clear. To clarify the pattern of biological species within this group of populations, we adopted a comprehensive approach and examined patterns of reproductive isolation in populations for which morphology, chromosome number, DNA content, and 18S rDNA sequences are known. In this study we established nine isofemale lines from four sites in Wisconsin and performed 266 crosses. Crosses within and among these lines were used to relate the degree of reproductive isolation to chromosome differences and to construct a model to explain the origin and maintenance of chromosome number variability. Different gametic and somatic chromosome numbers were observed among specimens within some isofemale lines. In a few cases, gametes with different haploid numbers were produced by a single female. Matings within isofemale lines always produced at least some reproductively successful replicate crosses (produced viable, fertile offspring). Crosses between lines from the same site showed reduced success relative to within-line crosses. Crosses between populations from distant sites showed limited genetic compatibility, producing viable, fertile F1 offspring but infertile F2 adults. One cross between lines with different chromosome numbers (one with 2n = 8 and one with 2n = 10) produced fertile viable offspring, which reproduced for at least 60 generations. These hybrids had either eight or nine chromosomes in the third generation of inbreeding, and eight chromosomes after 20 generations. These hybrids also had reduced nuclear DNA contents at the third generation, a level that persisted through the 20th generation. Successful backcrosses between some hybrids and their parental lines further demonstrated the potential for genetic compatibility among forms with different chromosome numbers. We propose a model in which alterations due to Robertsonian fusions, translocations, and/or loss of chromosomal fragments generate heritable variation, only some of which leads to reproductive isolation. Hence, some of the criteria traditionally used to recognize species boundaries in animals (morphology, DNA content, chromosome number) may not apply to this species complex.  相似文献

Most basophilic serine/threonine kinases preferentially phosphorylate substrates with Arg at P-3 but vary greatly in additional strong preference for Arg at P-2 or P-5. The structural basis for P-2 or P-5 preference is known for two AGC kinases (family of protein kinases A, G, and C) in which it is mediated by a single pair of acidic residues (PEN+1 and YEM+1). We sought a general understanding of P-2 and P-5 Arg preference. The strength of Arg preference at each position was assessed in 15 kinases using a new degenerate peptide library approach. Strong P-2 or P-5 Arg preference occurred not only in AGC kinases (7 of 8 studied) but also in calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CAMK, 1 of 3) and Ste20 (STE) kinases (2 of 4). Analysis of sequence conservation demonstrated almost perfect correlation between (a) strong P-2 or P-5 Arg preference and (b) acidic residues at both PEN+1 and YEM+1. Mutation of two kinases (PKC-theta and p21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1)) confirmed critical roles of both PEN+1 and YEM+1 residues in determining strong R-2 Arg preference. PAK kinases were unique in having exceptionally strong Arg preference at P-2 but lacking strong Arg preference at P-3. Preference for Arg at P-2 was so critical to PAK recognition that PAK1 activity was virtually eliminated by mutating the PEN+1 or YEM+1 residues. The fact that this specific pair of acidic residues has been repeatedly and exclusively used by evolution for conferring strong Arg preference at two different substrate positions in three different kinase families implies it is uniquely well suited to mediate sufficiently good substrate binding without unduly restricting product release.  相似文献

Sponges and corals from the Bartonian marly formations of the Pamplona Basin (South Pyrenean area, Navarre) are described for the first time. The fossiliferous levels correspond respectively to flood-influenced delta-front (Ardanatz Sandstone) and restricted outer-platform (Ilundain Marls Fm.) environments. The fossil sponges exhibit diagenetic fragmentation, but they are often complete specimens. The skeleton appears partially or totally replaced by calcite and/or in some cases large crystals of celestite. Celestite forms relatively early during diagenesis in a dysoxic environment. Neomorphic fibrous quartzine-lutecine spherulites are also present. Hexactinellids and lithistids occur, but the former predominate. The associations include the species Laocoetis samueli, Guettardiscyphia thiolati and/or Pleuroguettardia iberica, cf. Rhizocheton robustus, and two lithistids indet. Corals are present only in the Ardanatz Sandstone. The fossil skeletons are composed of large neomorphic sparry calcite crystals. The assigned species are Stylocoenia taurinensis, Astrocoenia octopartita, Ceratotrochus bodellei, Placosmiliopsis bilobatus, and Desmophyllum castellolense. The sponge and coral taxa are similar to those previously described from other contemporaneous geological formations of the Pyrenean realm. The Pamplona Basin assemblages appear less diverse than those of the Bartonian of the eastern South Pyrenean area, more similar to that of the Eocene of Biarritz (Aquitanian Basin). This lower diversity is not due to a lower-resolution sampling but to taphonomic bias and/or paleoecological differences. The dominance of hexactinellids, erect morphologies, and sedimentological and micropaleontological data show that the sponge communities lived in deep shelfal waters. The corals, mainly associated with levels with high terrigenous content, seem reworked from shallower and more proximal environments.  相似文献

A total of 2063 mid- to late-instar larval black flies were collected from 64 stream sites in South Carolina and screened for the presence of the trichomycete fungus Harpella melusinae. Sixteen of 18 host species were colonized by H. melusinae on at least one occasion. Prevalence of H. melusinae in larvae of Simulium tuberosum cytospecies "A" was highest in acidic streams with low conductivity, whereas H. melusinae colonized larvae of Simulium verecundum most frequently in slower-moving streams. Ecological conditions, therefore, can serve as predictors of the prevalence of H. melusinae. Prevalence in host larvae was significantly lower in the Piedmont ecoregion than in the Mountain ecoregion. Prevalence did not differ in the host species S. verecundum across ecoregions, suggesting that different prevalences among host species might indicate some host preference. The prevalence of H. melusinae differed significantly between two univoltine host species (Simulium venustum and Prosimulium magnum) at the same site but not between two multivoltine host species (S. tuberosum cytospecies "FG" and S. tuberosum cytospecies "CDE"), suggesting that host life history could be important in determining fungal prevalence.  相似文献

Dental tissues provide important insights into aspects of hominid palaeobiology that are otherwise difficult to obtain from studies of the bony skeleton. Tooth enamel is formed by ameloblasts, which demonstrate daily secretory rhythms developing tissue-specific structures known as cross striations, and longer period markings called striae of Retzius. These enamel features were studied in the molars of two well known South African hominid species, Australopithecus africanus and Paranthropus robustus. Using newly developed portable confocal microscopy, we have obtained cross striation periodicities (number of cross striations between adjacent striae) for the largest sample of hominid teeth reported to date. These data indicate a mean periodicity of seven days in these small-bodied hominids. Important differences were observed in the inferred mechanisms of enamel development between these taxa. Ameloblasts maintain high rates of differentiation throughout cervical enamel development in P. robustus but not in A. africanus. In our sample, there were fewer lateral striae of Retzius in P. robustus than in A. africanus. In a molar of P. robustus, lateral enamel formed in a much shorter time than cuspal enamel, and the opposite was observed in two molars of A. africanus. In spite of the greater occlusal area and enamel thickness of the molars of both fossil species compared with modern humans, the total crown formation time of these three fossil molars was shorter than the corresponding tooth type in modern humans. Our results provide support for previous conclusions that molar crown formation time was short in Plio-Pleistocene hominids, and strongly suggest the presence of different mechanisms of amelogenesis, and thus tooth development, in these taxa.  相似文献

One hundred and eighty-two new specimens of Parabrotula and 52 Leucobrotula are reported. Generic separation is confirmed. although premaxillary dentition no longer distinguishes the two. Two species of Parabrotula (one yet to be described) and one of Leucobrotula are strongly indicated from meristic data. Breeding biology is considered, with comment upon sexual dimorphism in size, size at maturity and possible breeding period. Parabrotulu plagiophthalmus Zugmayer, 1911 is shown to be a midwater non-migrant species (range 76@1500 m) with a temperature preference in the eastern North Atlantic of 9.0–5.0° C. Leucobrotulu udipatus Koefoed, 1952 exhibits a depth range of 61–1290 m and a temperature range of 9.0–4.2° C. Geographically it is evidently restricted to the North Atlantic and endemic to the eastern side. Most specimens were caught pelagically in the northwest African upwelling area in slope waters. Parabrotulaplagiophthalnius is distributed worldwide, although 89% came from the eastern North Atlantic.  相似文献

Ecological studies were carried out on 19 endangered populations of Meconopsis horridula, M. paniculata, M. simplicfolia, M. sinuata and M. villosa from the Sikkim Himalayas. The populations of M. horridula, M. paniculata and M. sinuata inhabit open alpine slopes, those of M. simplicfolia are restricted to alpine meadows, while those of M. villosa are confined to the interiors of temperate forests and along forest fringes. The habitats of these species remain snow-hound from October to February. Analyses suggest that all the species except M. horridula , have a broad area of distribution, but narrow habitats and niches. All five species are confined to moist, clayey to silty soils with acidic pH, high concentrations of organic matter, nitrate, phosphate, potassium and calcium. M. paniculata is a 'generalist', whereas all other species investigated are 'specialists'.  相似文献

Thick molar enamel is among the few diagnostic characters of hominins which are measurable in fossil specimens. Despite a long history of study and characterization of Paranthropus molars as relatively 'hyper-thick', only a few tooth fragments and controlled planes of section (designed to be proxies of whole-crown thickness) have been measured. Here, we measure molar enamel thickness in Australopithecus africanus and Paranthropus robustus using accurate microtomographic methods, recording the whole-crown distribution of enamel. Both taxa have relatively thick enamel, but are thinner than previously characterized based on two-dimensional measurements. Three-dimensional measurements show that P. robustus enamel is not hyper-thick, and A. africanus enamel is relatively thinner than that of recent humans. Interspecific differences in the whole-crown distribution of enamel thickness influence cross-sectional measurements such that enamel thickness is exaggerated in two-dimensional sections of A. africanus and P. robustus molars. As such, two-dimensional enamel thickness measurements in australopiths are not reliable proxies for the three-dimensional data they are meant to represent. The three-dimensional distribution of enamel thickness shows different patterns among species, and is more useful for the interpretation of functional adaptations than single summary measures of enamel thickness.  相似文献

Xenopus ectodermal cells have previously been shown to respond to acidic and basic FGF by differentiating into mesodermal tissue. In the present study, ectodermal explants from Xenopus blastulae were shown to have high affinity binding sites for 125I-aFGF (Kd = 1.4 X 10(-10) M). The total number of sites, determined by Scatchard analysis, was 3 X 10(8) per explant (surface area of approximately 1 mm2). Two putative receptors of relative molecular mass 130,000 and 140,000 were identified by chemical crosslinking to 125I-aFGF. Both acidic and basic FGF, but not TGF beta 2, could compete for affinity labelling of these bands. The receptor density at the cell surface parallels the developmental competence of Xenopus animal pole cells to respond to FGF. Receptors are present at highest density in the marginal zone but are not restricted to cells in this region.  相似文献

According to published accounts, an enlarged occipital-marginal sinus system is absent in Australopithecus africanus, although it occurs in high frequencies in A. robustus, A. Boisei, and Hadar hominids commonly designated A. afarensis. In this report, we describe, for the first time, an enlarged occipital-marginal sinus system on the endocranial cast of the Taung specimen, which is part of the holotype of A. africanus. In addition, well-developed right transverse and sigmoid sinuses are represented on the Taung endocast. The various components of the dual venous sinus system on the Taung endocast are measured, and the system is compared to those of other fossil hominids. The compresence of a lateral sinus system and enlarged occipital and marginal sinuses occurs in two Hadar specimens, 2 specimens of A. robustus crassidens, 1 A. boisei specimen, and several early H. sapiens crania. Hence, the presence of strong transverse sinus impressions in a fragmentary specimen may not be interpreted as an indication that an enlarged occipital-marginal sinus system was not present in the original specimen. Conversely, lack of transverse sinus grooves in a fragmentary specimen does provide indirect evidence than an enlarged occipital-marginal system would probably have been present in the whole specimen, as in 2 specimens of A. boisei. Including Taung, enlarged occipital and marginal sinuses occur in 1 out of 5, or 20%, of A. africanus specimens. This figure compares well with the range of mean frequencies in modern human cranial series (1.5 to 28%), but is much lower than are the frequencies for A. boisei, A. robustus, and the Hadar hominids.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
