One of the fundamental questions in animal ecology concerns the activity pattern of animals and the environmental and intrinsic factors that influence such dynamics. This study tested the hypotheses that activity time budgets of the African buffalo appeared to vary by season and times of day and predicted that buffalo would express unequal proportion of time for different activity patterns during the wet and dry seasons in Chebera Churchura National Park (CCNP). An investigation on the diurnal activity budget of the African buffalo was carried out during the wet and dry seasons of 2012–2014 in the Chebera Churchura National Park, Ethiopia, using focal‐animal sampling method. Buffalo spent a greater proportion of the time in feeding and resting/ruminating activities in both the wet and dry seasons. Feeding and resting (lying down and standing) were the predominant activities (87.14% of the diurnal active period), 48.95% time spent feeding during the dry season and 44.91% during the wet season. There was a significant decrease in feeding and an increase in resting from dry seasons to wet seasons. Daytime grazing and resting periods during the wet season were estimated to be 5.39 h and 4.98 h, respectively. Morning and the late afternoon activity peaks were more pronounced during the dry season than the wet season. Therefore, feeding and resting time was influenced by the time of day and the seasons. But there were no significant difference in time allocation for other activities in both the wet and dry seasons. The study has implications for understanding animal activity budget across species, particularly relationships between temperature and season.  相似文献

Activity budgets were studied in eight Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) at Chester Zoo (UK) for 35 days, between January and November 1999. Recordings were made between 10:00 and 16:00 hr (with most behavior frequencies calculated between 10:00 and 14:00 hr). The elephants exhibited variation in activity depending on their age, sex, the time of day and the time of year. Only the five adult cows exhibited stereotypic behavior, with frequencies ranging from 3.9 to 29.4% of all observations. These elephants exhibited individual, diurnal and seasonal variation in stereotypic behavior. This has implications for studies that use short sampling periods and may make comparisons of data collected at different times of the day or year invalid. The six adult elephants spent 27.4–41.4% of the time feeding (between 10:00 and 14:00 hr), 22.9–42.0% standing still, 6.1–19.2% walking and 3.9–9.6% dusting. The hypothesis that the frequency of stereotypic behavior in adult cow elephants was negatively correlated with the frequency of feeding behavior was tested and was found to be true. Stereotypic behavior increased in frequency toward the end of the day—while waiting to return to the elephant house for food—and elephants spent more time stereotyping during the winter months than during the summer months. Elephants were inactive (i.e. exhibited behaviors other than locomotion) for between 70.1 and 93.9% of the time. Creating more opportunities for elephants to exhibit foraging behavior and the introduction of greater unpredictability into management regimes, especially feeding times, may reduce the frequency of stereotypic behavior and increase general activity levels. Individually marked males of Pieris rapae crucivora, were observed to determine how they allocate time to reproduction and feeding. Males were found to alternately feed and search for females. This manner of time allocation persisted throughout the day. The total times that males allocated to the two behaviors were positively correlated, i.e. those males that spent longer searching for females, also feed for longer periods. Males, however, tended to allocate more time to the female-searching in the morning than in the afternoon, while time allocated to feeding throughout the day. Older males spent more time searching for females in the morning. The body weight of male butterflies also changed as they aged. The results are discussed in terms of both proximal and ultimate aspects of female-search.  相似文献

Free-ranging lesser kudu were observed during the day in Tsavo (East) National Park for periods of up to 12 h and records of activity patterns were obtained. Data grouped into the percentage of animals engaged in feeding, resting, and other activities in each time class show a changing pattern of behaviour through the day. The presence of a biphasic resting rhythm is demonstrated, the initiation and duration of which are variable. Feeding generally predominated in the early morning and late afternoon. Rumination took place during resting periods which were also used for the avoidance of excessive heat stress. Possible factors controlling the phasing of the behaviour seen are discussed.  相似文献

The banded butterflyfish (Chaetodon striatus) from the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic is a territorial, diurnal forager on benthic invertebrates. It is usually seen moving singly or in pairs, a few meters above the sea floor. We studied the foraging activity of C. striatus on rocky reefs in southeastern Brazil. This fish spent about 11 h and 30 min per day on feeding activities, and preferred colonies of non-scleratinian anthozoans over sandy and rocky substrata while foraging. The lowest feeding rates were recorded in the early morning and late afternoon, but we found no further differences between feeding rates throughout the day. We also found no differences between the feeding rates of paired and single individuals.  相似文献

Warthog activity was recorded at 4-min intervals for continuous periods of 14 h on three consecutive days. The major activities were feeding or lying down and walking. The amount of time spent in feeding is related to the size of the animal and maximum-intensity feeding occurs in the early morning and in the late afternoon and evening. The animals drank usually only once each day. Adult females urinate much more often than males and this is thought to be a behavioural adaptation whereby the males can tell whether or not a female is in heat.  相似文献

We describe the activity patterns and time budgets of white-headed langurs that were confined to about 4 km2 of Longlin habitat in Fusui County, Guangxi Province, China. Between February and December 1996, we observed 6 langur groups monthly via group focal sampling and continuously recording the behavior of a focal group. Our results indicate that the langur groups selected stone caves on cliffs as sleeping sites. The daily activity pattern outside caves had 8 stages: (1) leaving the cave in the early morning; (2) moving and resting; (3) morning feeding; (4) moving a long distance; (5) resting at noon; (6) afternoon feeding; (7) moving back to the cave, and (8) entering the cave. Over the year, langurs spent a daily average of about 11.5 h outside caves and about 12.5 h inside caves. Moving accounted for 7% (spring), 7% (summer-autumn) and 13% (winter) of the time budget, and langurs spent 9% (summer-autumn) and 14% (spring) to 20% (winter) of their time feeding. Resting accounted for 79% of the time budget in spring, 84% in summer-autumn, and 57% in winter. Sunbathing only occurred in winter and accounted for about 10% of the time budget. One-way ANOVA and multiple range tests demonstrated that time budgets differed significantly among seasons. Langurs spent significantly more time feeding and moving in winter than in spring and summer-autumn, but significantly less time resting in winter than in spring and summer-autumn.  相似文献

We examined patterns of crop raiding by elephants across gender and age classes in relation to elephant life history and sociobiology and estimated the quantitative contribution of crops to elephant diet in Kibale National Park (KNP). Elephant dung‐boli sizes were used to estimate age and sex, while the presence of crop remains in the dung of crop‐raiding elephants was used as evidence of repeated raiding. To estimate the expected proportion of elephants raiding per age class, the age distribution of raiders was compared with the age distribution of all KNP elephants. Elephants raiding crops were predominantly males. They began raiding in expected proportions at 10–14 years while a higher than expected proportion raided crops at 20–24 years. These results suggest that crop raiding is initiated at an age when male elephants leave their families and a large proportion of elephants raid when they are approaching reproductive competition. Evidence from dung of crop raiders, suggests that repeated raiding increases with age. Crop raiders derived 38% of their daily forage from the short time spent raiding, consistent with expectations of foraging theory. Males may be more likely to learn crop raiding because they are socially more independent and experience intense mating competition than females.  相似文献

The area of grassland affected by uncontrolled fires was recorded in the Rwenzori National Park for each dry season between July 1970 and July 1973 with the exception of the January 1973 season. The seasonal total of burnt grassland rose to a peak of 32 7% in January 1971 but there was then a marked decline to a negligible level in July 1971. This was followed by a further steady rise which by July 1973 had reached to within 3% of the previous peak. 13 4% of the park was burnt at least once a year on average, and 55 3% was burnt at some time or other during the 3 years. Burning was not uniformly distributed throughout the park and four regions at high risk from fire are identified for particular attention should a fire control policy be introduced. The need for a controlled burning policy is emphasized particularly in view of the destruction of trees which is taking place through the agency of elephants.  相似文献

Drought mortality of bush elephants in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
African bush elephants inhabiting the undeveloped Kalahari Sands region of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe are subject to episodic mortality during droughts. We monitored the drought‐related mortality of elephants in Hwange National Park over the course of an extended drought between 1993 and 1995. The drought‐related mortality of elephants was higher during 1994 than 1995, despite significantly higher rainfall in 1994 than 1995. We found significant differences in the age‐specific mortality of elephants during 1994 and 1995. The cumulative mortality profile from this study differed significantly from previous die‐offs at this site, with a higher mortality among adult age classes than that reported from earlier studies in Hwange National Park. The effective duration of the rainy season, not total annual precipitation, appears to be the best predictor for the potential severity of drought mortality among elephants in the Kalahari Sands habitats of Hwange National Park.  相似文献

Diurnal activity patterns and feeding ecology of geladas (Theropithecus gelada) in Chenek, Simien Mountains National Park, were studied from January 2010 to April 2010. Data were gathered for 7 days per month starting from early in the morning to dusk. The study site (1805 ha) was divided into five blocks and a total of 397 individuals were counted using simultaneous census method. One band with 21 individuals was selected as a study group and scan sampling was used to study their diurnal activity patterns and feeding ecology. Geladas dedicated significantly more time to foraging than to other diurnal activities. They spent the majority of feeding time foraging on grass, and allocated little time to feeding on leaves, shoots, and flowers. Geladas of all age classes devoted the least time to resting, and spent similar amount of time moving. The study band was observed to interact with people, and to steal food from tourists and local people. Raising local people's awareness of geladas ecology and behavior might be a necessary component in the species' successful management and conservation.  相似文献

Twenty-one multiparous sows were used in a Latin square design, from days 7 to 90 of gestation, to test the effect of fibre and food levels on feeding motivation and feeding-related stereotypies. Treatments were: VHF (very high-fibre, 29% ADF, 50% NDF, 4.5kg/day); HF (high-fibre, 23% ADF, 43% NDF, 3.5kg/day); C (control, 8% ADF, 20% NDF, 2.5kg/day); and control fed ad libitum (CAL). All diets except CAL provided a similar amount of major nutrients on a daily basis and were served in two meals. Each sow was subjected to each treatment for a 21-day period, at the end of which, behavioural observations were made. Two-hour observation periods starting at the afternoon food delivery revealed that sows spent more time eating on VHF and CAL (mean=21.2min) than on HF (13.2min) and C (7.6min) and more time on HF compared to C (p<0.01). When time spent eating was removed from total observation time, the percentage of remaining time spent in stereotypies was lower for VHF (median=17.9%) compared to C (median=49.8%), and lower for CAL (median=6.3%) compared to all other diets (p<0.01). During the period when lights were on (6.00-18.00h), 5min interval scans showed that VHF sows spent more time lying down and less time standing than C sows (p<0.05). Also, CAL sows spent more time lying down than sows on other treatments (p<0.01). During operant conditioning tests (OCT) performed before the afternoon meal and after the morning meal, less rewards were obtained by CAL sows (p<0.01), with no difference between other treatments. In conclusion, no reduction in feeding motivation of sows fed high-fibre diets could be measured by OCT, but very high levels of fibre were effective at reducing stereotypies and activity during the 2h post-feeding. However, these effects were not as marked as those observed with ad libitum feeding.  相似文献

Abstract. Activity rhythms of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) were assessed under constant conditions using actographs. In LD 12:12 h, activity was almost completely diurnal, had a 24 h period, and peaked 4 h after lights-on.In constant darkness, activity peaked in the early afternoon and the period of the rhythm was c. 26 h, indicating a circadian pacemaker.A delay in feeding shortened the free-running period in constant dark to c. 24 h.In constant light, flies were arrhythmic.Starvation also affected activity, with 24- and 48-h starved flies being as much as 20 times more active than recently fed flies.  相似文献

Owing to the late Pleistocene extinctions, the megafauna of Europe, Australia and the Americas disappeared, and with them the dispersal service they offered megafaunal fruit. The African savanna elephant, the largest remaining megaherbivore, offers valuable insights into the seed dispersal services provided by extinct megafauna in prehistoric times. Elephant seed dispersal studies have for the most part concentrated on African and Asian forest elephants. African savanna elephants are morphologically distinct from their forest counterparts. Like the forest elephants they consume large quantities of fruit from a large number of tree species. Despite this little is known of the savanna trees that rely on elephants for their dispersal or the spatial scale at which these seeds are dispersed. We combined information from feeding trials conducted on four park elephants with field telemetry data from 38 collared elephants collected over an 8‐year period in APNR/Kruger National Park to assess the seed dispersal service provided by savanna elephants. This study provides the first detailed account of the spatial scale at which African savanna elephants disperse seeds. Our mechanistic model predicts that 50 percent of seeds are carried over 2.5 km, and distances up to 65 km are achievable in maximum gut passage time. These findings suggest the savanna elephant as the longest distance terrestrial vertebrate disperser yet investigated. Maintaining their ecological role as a seed disperser may prove a significant factor in the conservation of large‐fruited tree diversity within the savannas. These results suggest that extinct megafauna offered a functionally unique dispersal service to megafaunal fruit.  相似文献

Feeding and drinking habits of the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis L.) population in Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya, were studied from May 1971 to August 1972. A total of 108 rhinoceros were recorded in the study area. Feeding rhinoceros were followed behind their feeding tracks until they stopped feeding (or changed to another activity) and the plants which they selected were identified. A technique was used which provided an indication of the relative importance of certain plants in the diet during May to September 1971 (wet-semi-dry), October 1971 to February 1972 (dry) and February to May 1972 (wet-semi-dry). A total of 240 h were spent actually watching feeding rhinoceros in thirteen distribution areas. During this period rhinoceros were observed eating seventy plant species from thirty botanical families. In all distribution areas rhinoceros were very selective for herbs and shrubs, and showed a marked preference for Solanum incanum, Dichrostachys cinerea and Acacia species. Rhinoceros were also observed to visit salt licks which contained sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium. Two feeding peaks, one in morning and the other in the afternoon were recorded. Black rhinoceros drink water mainly at night. They spend most of the night time near the watering places for they were mostly located in the mornings walking to the feeding grounds.  相似文献

Synopsis Among species of damselfish in which both sexes defend individual feeding territories, spawning nearly always begins at first light and is completed within 2 h. According to the anti-competitor hypothesis, such dawn spawning occurs because it minimizes the rate of intrusion by diurnally active food competitors while the female is away from her territory. An alternative hypothesis pertaining to adult feeding biology is that dawn spawning minimizes interference with the female's own feeding activity. Diel patterns of spawning and mate-searching activity were documented for a population of garibaldi damselfish, Hypsypops rubicundus, and compared with their diel feeding patterns and those of their food competitors. Female garibaldi spawned at approximately constant levels from dawn through late afternoon and showed peaks in mate-searching activity in the late morning or in the afternoon. However, feeding activity of both female garibaldi and their food competitors increased significantly from dawn to early afternoon. Thus, there was no inverse relationship between garibaldi spawning activity and feeding activity as predicted by these hypotheses.  相似文献

Information on the daily activity patterns of tabanid flies is important in the development of strategies that decrease the risk of pathogens transmitted by them. In addition, this information is useful to maximize numbers of tabanids trapped during short‐term studies and to target feeding behavior studies of certain tabanid species to their times of peak activity. The current study examined the effects of various meteorological factors on the daily activity patterns of common tropical species of tabanids in north Queensland. Each species studied responded differently to weather factors. Tabanus townsvilli Ricardo (Diptera: Tabanidae) was most active during late morning and early afternoon, whereas Pseudotabanus silvester (Bergroth) and Tabanus pallipennis Macquart were most active in the late afternoon. Tabanus dorsobimaculatus Macquart was most active in the morning and early afternoon. Data on daily activity patterns of tabanid flies indicates that in an area such as Townsville, North Queensland, where several species of tabanid are present concurrently in high numbers, the overlapping periods of high activity for these species indicate a high risk of pathogen transmission for most of the day (10.00–19.00 hours). Similarly, because each species responds differently to weather variables, only extreme weather conditions are likely to inhibit activity of all species. These data also indicate that for maximal results, trapping and feeding behavior studies should be tailored to the preferred activity period of the species under investigation.  相似文献

The present study assessed the diurnal variation in salivary cortisol in captive African elephants during routine management (baseline) and in relation to a potential stressor (translocation) to evaluate to what extent acute stress may affect diurnal cortisol patterns. Under baseline conditions, we collected morning and afternoon saliva samples of 10 animals (three zoos) on different days in two study periods (n = 3–10 per animal, daytime and period). Under stress conditions, we sampled the transported cow (newcomer) and the two cows of the destination zoo before and after the transport in the morning and afternoon (n = 3–9 per animal, daytime and transport phase), as well as after the first introduction of the newcomer to the bull (n = 1 per animal). Cortisol was measured in unextracted samples by enzyme immunoassay. Under baseline conditions, we observed the expected diurnal variation with higher cortisol levels in the morning than in the afternoon. Under stress conditions, neither a significant difference between pre- and posttransport, nor between morning and afternoon levels was found. The percentage difference between morning and afternoon cortisol after the transport, however, was remarkably lower than before the transport in the newcomer potentially indicating a stress response to familiarization. Saliva samples taken immediately after the introduction of the newcomer to the bull revealed a marked cortisol increase. Our findings indicate that stressors may disturb the diurnal cortisol rhythm. Furthermore, provided that samples can be collected promptly, salivary cortisol is a useful minimally invasive measure of physiological stress in the African elephant.  相似文献

Cox, George W. 1983. Foraging behaviour of the Dune Lark. Ostrich 54:113-120.

Foraging behaviour of the Dune Lark Mirafra erythrochlamys was studied in a dune environment at the Namib Research Institute, Gobabeb, South West Africa/Namibia in August 1981. Birds foraged for a total of 7 h per day in morning and afternoon periods separated by 3 h of inactivity during the warm midday. The birds exploited a distinctive series of vegetational belts dominated by three grasses. About two-thirds of total foraging time was spent in zones of dead and dormant grasses where seeds were sought by excavating small craters in the sand with the bill. Simples taken in the field, and simulations of bill-cratering behaviour in the laboratory, showed that this behaviour displaced seed-poor surface sand and exposed deeper, seed-rich layers. Birds formed small flocks when foraging for seeds in these zones. The remaining third of foraging time was spent in zones with large, live grass clumps, where insects were sought. Insect foraging was concentrated at the start and end of each activity period, but was most intense just before the midday period of inactivity when temperatures approached 30°C. Rough calculations of energy and water balance suggest that the larks are unable to maintain water balance under the observed conditions on seed food alone, and that this balance is achieved by feeding on insects. It is predicted that relative seed and insect foraging effort varies with temperature and season, as also suggested by limited published data on stomach contents in summer and winter.  相似文献
