The small population of northern hairy-nosed wombats in Epping Forest National Park is the last one known. The wombats construct their burrows in deep sandy soil, and feed through an open woodland with a grassy understorey. Individual wombats used small home ranges, with 70% core areas averaging 5.8 ha, and total range areas averaging around 25 ha. Their nightly emergences from burrows were timed to avoid extreme above-ground temperatures. Total activity varied from 2 to 6 hours above ground per night, and was greatest during late winter and early spring, when pasture productivity had been very low for around nine months. There was no evidence of any tendency for body condition or growth to fluctuate in response to variations in seasonal conditions. The ability of this species to maintain condition during harsh seasons while adopting conservative ranging behaviour is evidence of adaptations for the minimization of energy expenditure and the utilization of poor-quality forage. Management of the Park should attempt to see that consistent reserves of forage are maintained close to burrows throughout the year. 相似文献

Burrows of the northern hairy-nosed wombat were arranged in loose clusters, each of which was used in common by a group of up to 10 wombats. However, individual wombats rarely used the same burrows on the same days and feeding ranges tended to be separate within each sex. The incidence of breeding dispersal among females was quite high (at least 50%); dispersal distances ranged up to almost the full extent of the population's range. Genetic variation of microsatellite loci in a bottlenecked species: the northern hairy-nosed wombat Lasiorhinus krefftii 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
We investigate the utility of hypervariable microsatellite loci to measure genetic variability remaining in the northern hairy-nosed wombat, one of Australia's rarest mammals. This species suffered a dramatic range and population reduction over the past 120 years and now exists as a single colony of about 70 individuals at Epping Forest National Park, central Queensland. Because our preliminary research on mitochondrial DNA and multilocus DNA fingerprints did not reveal informative variation in this population, we chose to examine variation in microsatellite repeats, a class of loci known to be highly polymorphic in mammals. To assess the suitability of various wombat populations as a reference for comparisons of genetic variability and subdivision we further analysed mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b sequence, using phylogenetic methods. Our results show that appreciable levels of variation still exist in the Epping Forest colony although it has only 41% of the heterozygosity shown in a population of a closely-related species. From museum specimens collected in 1884, we also assessed microsatellite variation in an extinct population of the northern hairy-nosed wombat, from Deniliquin, New South Wales, 2000 km to the south of the extant population. The apparent loss of variation in the Epping Forest colony is consistent with an extremely small effective population size throughout its 120-year decline. 相似文献

The northern hairy-nosed (NHN) wombat is perhaps Australia's most endangered mammal. Being fossorial and nocturnal as well as rare, NHN wombats are difficult to observe in the wild. Hence little is known of their social biology, such as their mating and dispersal systems. A hypothesis has been advanced that adult females of the species disperse post-breeding, leaving their young to inhabit the natal burrow. Female-biased dispersal is expected to result in higher relatedness amongst males in a burrow cluster than amongst females in a burrow cluster. The usefulness of a panel of microsatellite markers in estimating the relatedness structure, and in reconstructing pedigrees for, the sole known population of NHN wombats was assessed. Microsatellite genotypes at eight or nine loci were obtained from 58 of the 85 known individuals, and used to estimate pairwise individual relatedness using Queller & Goodnight's (1989) RELATEDNESS 4.2. Our analysis gave the unexpected result that both males and females were significantly more closely related to their same-sex burrow cluster mates than random, while opposite-sex animals sharing burrows were only slightly (nonsignificantly) more related than random. This raises the possibility of dispersal patterns which lead to association of same-sex relatives. The observed relatedness structure is not expected to make likely a high incidence of inbred matings, as close relatives of the opposite sex are not significantly associated in space. Parentage analysis was attempted using genetic exclusion and LOD likelihood ratios, but proved difficult because of low genetic variation, incomplete sampling of potential parents, and paucity of ecological data such as known mother/offspring pairs and ages of individuals. 相似文献

Sarcoptic mange, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. wombati, could be a significant threat to populations of southern hairy-nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons; SHNW) in Australia. Treatment is currently based on the off-label use of various parasiticidal drugs, with limited clinical efficacy trials. Our primary aim was to determine the pharmacokinetic parameters of a macrocyclic lactone, moxidectin, to assist in the development of effective treatment protocols. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined in four female SHNW following a single subcutaneous injection of 0.2 mg/kg moxidectin. Blood samples were collected for 38 days following injection (August-September 2008), for analysis using liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. The mean peak plasma concentration occurred at 13.6 hr, with a mean peak plasma level of 98.6 ng/ml. The mean elimination half-life was 5.03 days, resulting in a mean area under the curve of 377 ng.day/ml. The peak plasma moxidectin concentration was higher than that seen in livestock species but the plasma elimination half-life was shorter. This study suggests that a single injection of 0.2 mg/kg moxidectin may not be sufficient to clear a mange infection in this species. 相似文献

Component units of all are branched tubular structures of varying epithelial makeup and secretory content. The prostate has the carrotlike shape and three consecutive regions commonly found in marsupials. The regions differ in their tubular histology and histochemistry: all contain secretory globules in glandular lumina. Cowper's glands A and B are histologically identical except for the absence of interstitial mast cells from gland G: gland C is characterized by narrower tubules and larger epithelial cells. Histochemical tests for protein, carbohydrate and iron indicate that glycogen is a major secretory product of the prostate (largely posterior region), iron is also secreted (mainly posterior region) and a small quantity of acid mucin is produced (mainly central region). Wombats belong to Australia's unique marsupial species. Two of the three remaining species, the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus) and the southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) are abundant. The third species, the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) has only about 115 individuals left in the wild. This study aimed to gain further insight into the basic reproductive biology of wombat species and evaluate the value of faecal progesterone metabolites and behavioural patterns as a means for non-invasive monitoring of the oestrous cycle in common and the southern hairy-nosed wombats. In an initial study, three different faecal steroid assays showed that 20alpha-OH-pregnanes were the main progesterone metabolites. These metabolites were examined in captive female common wombats (n = 5) and southern hairy-nosed wombats (n = 2). In one female common wombat 11.7 days with a follicular phase of 25.6 +/- 6.3 days and a luteal phase of 28.2 +/- 12.7 days. The data for faecal pregnanes obtained in the southern and in one male common wombat oestrous related behavioural data were obtained. Individual cycling females exhibited a significant relationship between plasma progesterone and faecal pregnanes. In the common wombat, the values for faecal pregnanes showed an oestrous cycle length of 55.1 +/- hairy-nosed wombat during the breeding season gave an oestrous cycle length of 41.1 +/- 12.8 days with a follicular phase of 27.9 +/- 12.3 days and a short luteal phase of 13.3 +/- 1.1 days. The behavioural data show that the faecal sniffing behaviour of the male, tended to increase around the time that oestrous was found. In conclusion, monitoring of 20alpha-OH-pregnanes in wombat faeces could be a useful methodology to monitor reproductive cycles in the wombat, and can possibly be applied to monitor the endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat. 相似文献

Little is known about the reproductive biology of Australia's critically endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), largely due to its cryptic nature and the difficulty in accessing the small remaining population of about 70 animals. Using the noninvasive technique of fecal steroid analysis, we have examined the endocrinology of the more common yet closely related southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons). The aims of this study were to 1) develop and validate fecal androgen analysis in this species, 2) examine and compare seasonal differences in fecal and plasma androgens in male wombats, and 3) correlate seasonal differences in androgens with changes in male accessory glands (prostate and bulbourethral gland). Fecal androgens were extracted in ether; concentrated; separated by HPLC into testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol (Adiol) fractions; and quantitated by RIA. The concentrations of androgens in fecal pellets from 14 wild southern hairy-nosed wombats as determined by RIA varied over the range 6.6-25.0 ng/g dry weight for T, 4.0-24.2 ng/g dry weight for DHT, and 0-34.8 ng/g dry weight for Adiol. For each androgen, a highly significant linear correlation was observed between plasma and fecal concentrations. When individuals were grouped into either breeding season (pellets collected between August-November) or nonbreeding season (collected between February-April), significant (P < 0.05) differences between seasons were observed for both plasma and fecal T, plasma DHT, and fecal Adiol. For all androgens, the mean fecal and plasma concentrations were higher during the breeding season than the nonbreeding season. A significant (P < 0.001) correlation was observed between fecal T and prostate weight, while DHT and Adiol correlations were nonsignificant. Significant correlations were observed, however, between all three fecal androgens and bulbourethral gland weight. These studies demonstrate that fecal T is a valid indicator of reproductive status in the male southern hairy-nosed wombat, with significant correlations observed between fecal T, plasma T, and prostate and bulbourethral gland weights. These findings have important implications for the study of the reproductive endocrinology of the critically endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat. 相似文献

There is limited information available on the oestrous cycle of female southern hairy-nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons). This is mainly due to an extremely poor breeding success in captivity and the difficulty in routine recapturing of these cryptic, semi-fossorial animals in the wild. The aim of this study was to characterise the oestrous cycle of this species by monitoring peripheral plasma concentrations of progesterone and oestradiol, assessing changes in vaginal cytology, pouch condition and the urogenital sinus. Eight adult female wombats were monitored during the breeding season (July-December) over 2 years (2002-2003). Samples were collected up to three times a week. Vaginal smears contained several cell types, categorised by morphology, as either superficial epithelial cells or parabasal-intermediate cells. Leucocytes were also counted. Plasma progesterone profiles showed a mean oestrous cycle length of 36.33+/-0.67 days with a peak progesterone concentration of 139.53+/-10.62nmol/L. Levels of oestradiol peaked at a mean level of 467.33+/-44.32pmol/L on average 5 days before a rise in plasma progesterone values. The proportion of epithelial cells in vaginal smears varied throughout the cycle, with a high percentage of superficial epithelial cells observed during the follicular phase. During periods when progesterone concentrations were high, a greater percentage of parabasal-intermediate cells was observed. In conclusion, this study has characterised the oestrous cycle of the southern hairy-nosed wombat and confirmed that changes in vaginal smears together with pouch and urogenital sinus details could be used to determine signs of oestrus in this species. 相似文献

Summary Calassical demographic methods applied to life history data on the northern spotted owl yield and estimate of the annual geometric
rate of increase for the population of λ=0.96±0.03, which is not significantly different from that for a stable population
(λ=1.00). Sensitivity analysis indicates that adult annual survivorship has by far the largest influence on λ, followed by
the probability that juveniles survive dispersal, and the adult annual fecundity. Substantial temporal fluctuations in demographic
parameters have little effect on the long-run growth rate of the population because of the long adult life expectancy. A model
of dispersal and territory occupancy that assumes demographic equilibrium is evaluated using data on the amount of old forest
habitat remaining in the Pacific Northwest and the current occupancy of this habitat by northern spotted owls. This model
is employed to predict the effect of future habitat loss and fragmentation on the population, implying that extinction will
result if the old forest is reduced to less than a proportion 0.21±0.02 of the total area in a large region. The estimated

Coccidial oocysts morphologically consistent with Eimeria ursini Supperer 1957, and E. tasmaniae Supperer 1957 were recovered from the feces of wild and captive hairy-nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons) in Australia. Eimeria arundeli so. n. was recovered from the feces of wild and captive common wombats (Vombatus ursinus). Eimeria arundeli oocysts are ellipsoidal to slightly ovoid 60.2--67.2 (63.7) X 40.6--47.6 (43.4); micropyle 3 in diameter usually visible; with oocyst wall granular, dark brown and occasionally opaque, 4--7 thick; inner oocyst wall clear, about 1.5 thick; small oocyst residuum present, four sporocysts ovoid 22.4--29.4 (25.8) X 12.6--15.4 (14.1) with protuberant Stieda body; opposite end of sporocyst also often slighly pointed; large granular sporocyst residuum obscuring sporozoites. Gametocytes of E. arundeli sp. n. and of an organism which is consistent with E. tasmaniae, are described developing in the lamina propria of villi in the small intestine. The stages in the hairy-nosed wombat are those described as Ileocystis wombati Gilruth and Bull 1912. It is suggested that the identification of the host of Supperer's E. ursini and E. tasmaniae as V. ursinus was in error and that the allopatric L. latifrons is the natural host. Eimeria tasmaniae Supperer 1957 is suppressed and E. wombati (Gilruth and Bull, 1912) comb. nov. is proposed and redescribed. No schizonts were identified among the endogenous stages, consistent with observations in the literature on other coccidia with similar gametocyte and oocyst structure. 相似文献
