Ten years after the large-scale tsetse control campaigns in the important cattle rearing areas of the Faro and Deo Division of the Adamaoua Plateau in Cameroon, the seasonal distribution and abundance of tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) were determined. During a period of 12 consecutive months (January-December 2005), the tsetse population was monitored along four trap transects consisting of a total of 32 traps and two flyround transects traversing the study area, which comprised the tsetse-infested valley, a buffer zone and the supposedly tsetse-free plateau. Throughout the study period, a total of 2195 Glossina morsitans submorsitans and 23 Glossina tachinoides were captured in the traps and 1007 G. m. submorsitans (78.8% male flies) were captured along the flyround transects. All G. tachinoides and almost all G. m. submorsitans were captured in the valley. Five G. m. submorsitans were captured in traps located in the buffer zone, whereas no flies were captured in traps located on the plateau. The index of apparent abundance (IAA) of G. m. submorsitans was substantially higher in the areas close to game reserves. In the remaining part of the valley, where wildlife is scarce and cattle are present during transhumance (dry season), the IAA of tsetse was substantially lower. In this part of the valley, the abundance of tsetse seemed to be associated with the presence of cattle, with the highest IAA during transhumance when cattle are present and the lowest apparent abundance during the rainy season when cattle have moved to the plateau. It is concluded that the distribution of tsetse in a large part of the valley undergoes substantial seasonal changes depending on the presence or absence of cattle. The repercussions of those findings for the control of tsetse in the valley and the probability of reinvasion of the plateau are discussed.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of Glossina austeni Newstead and Glossina brevipalpis Newstead (Diptera: Glossinidae) were studied in the three main vegetation types in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. During a period of 12 months, a trap transect consisting of 38 H-traps traversing the three vegetation types was monitored. The Index of Apparent Abundance (IAA) for G. brevipalpis was high in indigenous forest and open grassland but lower in exotic plantations. Glossina austeni, on the other hand, was captured mainly in or adjacent to indigenous forest. The seasonal trend in the IAA did not differ between vegetation types. The findings on the distribution of G. brevipalpis are in contrast with the historic records. Historically, this species was considered to be restricted to areas with a dense overhead canopy and high relative humidity. The repercussions of these findings for the epidemiology of livestock trypanosomiasis and the control of tsetse in Zululand are discussed.  相似文献

Human activities modify ecosystem structure and function and can also alter the vital rates of vectors and thus the risk of infection with vector‐borne diseases. In the Maasai Steppe ecosystem of northern Tanzania, local communities depend on livestock and suitable pasture that is shared with wildlife, which can increase tsetse abundance and the risk of trypanosomiasis. We monitored the monthly tsetse fly abundance adjacent to Tarangire National Park in 2014–2015 using geo‐referenced, baited epsilon traps. We examined the effect of habitat types and vegetation greenness (NDVI) on the relative abundance of tsetse fly species. Host availability (livestock and wildlife) was also recorded within 100×100 m of each trap site. The highest tsetse abundance was found in the ecotone between Acacia‐Commiphora woodland and grassland, and the lowest in riverine woodland. Glossina swynnertoni was the most abundant species (68%) trapped throughout the entire study, while G. pallidipes was the least common (4%). Relative species abundance was negatively associated with NDVI, with greatest abundance observed in the dry season. The relationship with the abundance of wildlife and livestock was more complex, as we found positive and negative associations depending on the host and fly species. While habitat is important for tsetse distribution, hosts also play a critical role in affecting fly abundance and, potentially, trypanosomiasis risk.  相似文献

We sampled butterflies in six different habitat types in and around Katavi National Park, a remote reserve consisting primarily of miombo woodland and seasonal lakes in western Tanzania. Blendon traps set for 531 trap days and 143 h of butterfly netting at 35 sites yielded 186 species from five families over a 4‐month period during the wet season. Eight of these species constituted possible range extensions. Butterfly abundance and species richness were low in cultivated habitats but high in open riverine habitats; many butterfly species were found only in seasonally flooded grassland. This study constitutes the first butterfly species inventory from this poorly‐known national park, shows that protection of dry season water sources provides an important conservation service for invertebrates as well as large mammals, and that increased cultivation outside miombo parks can reduce local butterfly diversity.  相似文献

In the the early 1970s the Egbe area of Nigeria was known to be one of high trypanosomiasis risk, with four Glossina species G. morsitans submorsitans Newstead, G.longipalpis Wiedemann, G.palpalis palpalis Robineau-Desvoidy and G.tachinoides Westwood present. Grazing by Fulani pastoralists used to be short-term and only in the dry season. In recent years these pastoralists have grazed their cattle in the area throughout the year and this has prompted a reappraisal of the tsetse situation. Tsetse populations were sampled for 3 years using hand-net catches from man or an ox and biconical traps. Resident livestock, slaughter cattle and some of the flies were examined for trypanosome infection. Of the four tsetse species previously reported from the area, only the riverine species, G.p.palpalis and G.tachinoides, were encountered during the investigation. None of the 152 G.p.palpalis and 52 G.tachinoides examined was infected with trypanosomes. No infection was detected in 101 slaughtered cattle, 65 live Muturu, twelve goats and two pigs by wet film examination. However, a 14.3% Trypanosoma vivax infection rate was detected by Haematocrit Centrifugation Technique (HCT) examination in twenty-one slaughtered cattle. Increased human activities over the years had destroyed much of the vegetation and depleted the wild-life population to an extent that resulted in the disappearance of G.m.submorsitans and G.longipalpis, resulting in turn in a greatly reduced trypanosomiasis risk. It is likely that a similar trend is occurring in other areas of the Derived Savanna and Forest zones of West Africa as the human population expands.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In field studies, tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) feed more successfully on cattle infected with Trypanosoma congolense Broden (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) than on cattle infected with T. vivax Ziemann or uninfected cattle. Here we describe the first laboratory investigation of this phenomenon. In the first experiment, caged Glossina pallidipes Austen were fed for 1 and 5 min on a Boran steer infected with T. congolense clone IL 1180 and on an uninfected steer. Feeding success was recorded in this way five times over several weeks. The same protocol was subsequently used in three additional experiments with the following combinations: G. pallidipes and a steer infected with T. vivax stock IL 3913, G. morsitans centralis Machado and a steer infected with T. congolense, and G. morsitans centralis and a steer infected with T. vivax. The four experiments were replicated once, making eight experiments in total. In three experiments there was increased tsetse feeding success, measured at 1 min, after a steer became infected (T. congolense, two experiments and T. vivax, one experiment). Analysis of all data combined found no significant differences in tsetse feeding success on the different groups of cattle prior to infection, but after infection tsetse feeding success was significantly greater on the infected cattle (P< 0.001). Trypanosoma congolense infection led to a greater increase in tsetse feeding success than T. vivax infection. The increase in feeding success was not related to changes in the level of anaemia, skin surface temperature or parasitaemia. A possible explanation is the effects of trypanosome infection on cutaneous vasodilation and/or blood clotting in infected cattle. When allowed to feed for 5 min, nearly all tsetse engorged successfully and effects of cattle infection on feeding success were not found.  相似文献

1. Lipophorin was isolated from the haemolymph of adult tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans morsitans, by ultracentrifugation in a potassium bromide density gradient. 2. The tsetse fly lipophorin (Mr congruent to 600,000) has a density of congruent to 1.11 g/ml and consists of two apoproteins, apolipophorin-I (apoLp-I, Mr congruent to 250,000) and apolipophorin-II (apoLp-II, Mr congruent to 80,000), both of which are glycosylated as shown by staining with periodate-Schiff reagent. The protein complex is composed of 49% protein and 51% lipids. 3. The finding of lipophorin in tsetse fly haemolymph suggests that, although these flies primarily utilize proline for their energy needs, there is an active transport mechanism for the supply of lipid requirements.  相似文献

Abstract. The daily flight activity patterns of one of the main vectors of animal trypanosomiasis in West Africa, Glossina morsitans submorsitans , were assessed using four different methods. Results from all the methods showed that there was some flight activity nearly every hour in all seasons but they differed in the level of contact between grazing cattle herds and G.m.submorsitans. In the late dry season, trap data indicated that there was negligible activity from midday to late afternoon, whereas observations of tsetse contact with cattle herds or hand-net collections on herd followings showed no fall in attack rates on the cattle by G.m.submorsitans.
Differences between trap and animal-baited collection data may be attributable to the type of G.m.submorsitans sampled by each method. Male G.m.submorsitans captured by traps were more fat depleted than those caught on ox-baited flyrounds or by hand-net collections on herd followings. All methods showed that male G.m.submorsitans were most fat depleted in the late dry season and least in the early dry season. It was concluded that the traps were mainly sampling the spontaneous flights of G.m.submorsitans. Hunger and endogenous rhythms increase the likelihood of spontaneous flights towards dusk, particularly in conditions such as those at midday in the very hot, late dry season. However, the presence of cattle herds in infested habitats probably activated nearby G.m.submorsitans and the continual movement through the grazing areas ensured contact with tsetse throughout grazing.
The data indicated that strategic management of herd grazing times cannot eliminate the risk of trypanosomiasis transmission occurring, irrespective of the harshness of the dry season climate. An assessment of the level of this risk could only be measured suitably by collecting tsetse using animal-baited methods, not from trap data.  相似文献

We investigate cambial growth periodicity in Brachystegia spiciformis, a dominant tree species in the seasonally dry miombo woodland of southern Africa. To better understand how the brevi-deciduous (experiencing a short, drought-induced leaf fall period) leaf phenology of this species can be linked to a distinct period of cambial activity, we applied a bi-weekly pinning to six trees in western Zambia over the course of one year. Our results show that the onset and end of cambial growth was synchronous between trees, but was not concurrent with the onset and end of the rainy season. The relatively short (three to four months maximum) cambial growth season corresponded to the core of the rainy season, when 75% of the annual precipitation fell, and to the period when the trees were at full photosynthetic capacity. Tree-ring studies of this species have found a significant relationship between annual tree growth and precipitation, but we did not observe such a correlation at intra-annual resolution in this study. Furthermore, a substantial rainfall event occurring after the end of the cambial growth season did not induce xylem initiation or false ring formation. Low sample replication should be taken into account when interpreting the results of this study, but our findings can be used to refine the carbon allocation component of process-based terrestrial ecosystem models and can thus contribute to a more detailed estimation of the role of the miombo woodland in the terrestrial carbon cycle. Furthermore, we provide a physiological foundation for the use of Brachystegia spiciformis tree-ring records in paleoclimate research.  相似文献

A study was carried out to determine the effect on the reproductive performance of female Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood when allowed to feed, in vitro, for 63 days on fresh defibrinated blood of buffalo, bushbuck, cattle, eland, oryx, warthog, waterbuck or wildebeest. There were marginal differences in the survival and reproductive performance between eight different groups of tsetse, 200 per group, when fed on the blood of these mammalian species. When allowed to feed for 14 consecutive days on the blood of buffalo, wildebeest or warthog, the mean number of feeds were 6.2 +/- 0.3, 6.5 +/- 0.3 and 6.3 +/- 0.3, respectively. The mean weight of the bloodmeal taken also did not differ significantly between these three groups. Whereas the protein patterns of the blood plasma of the above eight host animals were different, the protein patterns of the haemolymph from tsetse fed on the blood of these hosts were identical. It is thus concluded that the preference shown by tsetse for some mammalian species investigated here may not be based on any aspect of the nutritional value of their blood.  相似文献

Studies were carried out in Zimbabwe of the responses of tsetse to cattle treated with deltamethrin applied to the parts of the body where most tsetse were shown to land. Large proportions of Glossina pallidipes Austen (Diptera: Glossinidae) landed on the belly ( approximately 25%) and legs ( approximately 70%), particularly the front legs ( approximately 50%). Substantial proportions of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood landed on the legs ( approximately 50%) and belly (25%), with the remainder landing on the torso, particularly the flanks ( approximately 15%). Studies were made of the knockdown rate of wild, female G. pallidipes exposed to cattle treated with a 1% pour-on or 0.005% suspension concentrate of deltamethrin applied to the (a) whole body, (b) belly and legs, (c) legs, (d) front legs, (e) middle and lower front legs, or (f) lower front legs. The restricted treatments used 20%, 10%, 5%, 2% or 1% of the active ingredient applied in the whole-body treatments. There was a marked seasonal effect on the performance of all treatments. With the whole-body treatment, the persistence period (knockdown > 50%) ranged from approximately 10 days during the hot, wet season (mean daily temperature > 30 degrees C) to approximately 20 days during the cool, dry season (< 22 degrees C). Restricting the application of insecticide reduced the seasonal persistence periods to approximately 10-15 days if only the legs and belly were treated, approximately 5-15 days if only the legs were treated and < 5 days for the more restricted treatments. The restricted application did not affect the landing distribution of tsetse or the duration of landing bouts (mean = 30 s). The results suggest that more cost-effective control of tsetse could be achieved by applying insecticide to the belly and legs of cattle at 2-week intervals, rather than using the current practice of treating the whole body of each animal at monthly intervals. This would cut the cost of insecticide by 40%, improve efficacy by 27% and reduce the threats to non-target organisms and the enzootic stability of tick-borne diseases.  相似文献

Recent studies of Palpalis group tsetse [Glossina fuscipes fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) in Kenya] suggest that small (0.25 × 0.25 m) insecticide-treated targets will be more cost-effective than the larger (≥1.0 × 1.0 m) designs currently used to control tsetse. Studies were undertaken in Zimbabwe to assess whether small targets are also more cost-effective for the Morsitans group tsetse, Glossina morsitans morsitans and Glossina pallidipes. Numbers of tsetse contacting targets of 0.25 × 0.25 m or 1.0 × 1.0 m, respectively, were estimated using arrangements of electrocuting grids which killed or stunned tsetse as they contacted the target. Catches of G. pallidipes and G. m. morsitans at small (0.25 × 0.25 m) targets were, respectively, ~1% and ~6% of catches at large (1.0 × 1.0 m) targets. Hence, the tsetse killed per unit area of target was greater for the larger than the smaller target, suggesting that small targets are not cost-effective for use against Morsitans group species. The results suggest that there is a fundamental difference in the host-orientated behaviour of Morsitans and Palpalis group tsetse and that the former are more responsive to host odours, whereas the latter seem highly responsive to visual stimuli.  相似文献

Abstract. Extracts from the corpus cardiacum-corpus allatum-aorta (CC-CA-A) complex of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood contain a hypertrehalosaemic factor when assayed in Periplaneta americana L. and in G.morsitans. A slight though significant decrease, followed by an increase, in haemolymph total carbohydrate occurs when tsetse are flown for 1 h. When assayed in Locusta migratoria L., the extracts have no adipokinetic activity, but L.migratoria corpus cardiacum extract produces an adipokinetic response in the female tsetse. It is suggested that the neurosecretions contained in the tsetse CC-CA-A complex contain a hypertrehalosaemic factor whose role is to mobilize glycogen.  相似文献

Landscape monitoring of semi-arid rangelands in the Kenyan Rift Valley   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A sampling system was devised and used from 1992 to 1996 in annual grassland and open woodland of the south-west Kenyan Rift Valley. The monitoring was designed to detect vegetation changes consequent on the attempted removal of the tsetse vectors of trypanosomiasis in cattle during a simultaneous trapping programme. The sampled sites covered most vegetation-landscape types, and have led to a better understanding of processes within some. Although fluctuations in pastoralist use and occupancy have been observed, no change in vegetation can be attributed to increased grazing or browsing. Although there is high climatic variability some vegetation types seemed stable over the period studied, and some trends appear to be predictable.  相似文献

Salivary glands of tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidiae) contain molecules that are involved in preventing blood clotting during feeding as well as molecules thought to be intimately associated with trypanosome development and maturation. Here we present a protein microchemical analysis of the major soluble proteins of the salivary glands of Glossina morsitans morsitans, an important vector of African trypanosomes. Differential solubilization of salivary proteins was followed by reverse-phase, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and analysis of fractions by 1-D gel electrophoresis to reveal four major proteins. Each protein was subjected to amino acid microanalysis and N-terminal microsequencing. A protein chemical approach using high-resolution 2-D gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry was also used to identify the salivary proteins. Matrix-assisted, laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) tandem mass spectrometry methods were used for peptide mass mapping and sequencing, respectively. Sequence information and peptide mass maps queried against the NCBI non-redundant database confirmed the identity of the first protein as tsetse salivary gland growth factor-1 (TSGF-1). Two proteins with no known function were identified as tsetse salivary gland protein 1 (Tsal 1) and tsetse salivary gland protein 2 (Tsal 2). The fourth protein was identified as Tsetse antigen-5 (TAg-5), which is a member of a large family of anti-haemostatic proteins. The results show that these four proteins are the most abundant soluble gene products present in salivary glands of teneral G. m. morsitans. We discuss the possible functions of these major proteins in cyclical transmission of African trypanosomes.  相似文献

Molecules in the midgut of the tsetse fly (Diptera: Glossinidiae) are thought to play an important role in the life cycle of African trypanosomes by influencing their initial establishment in the midgut and subsequent differentiation events that ultimately affect parasite transmission. It is thus important to determine the molecular composition of the tsetse midgut to aid in understanding disease transmission by these medically important insect vectors. Here, we report that the most abundant protein in the midguts of teneral (unfed) Glossina morsitans morsitans is a 60 kDa molecular chaperone of bacterial origin. Two species of symbiotic bacteria reside in the tsetse midgut, Sodalis glossinidius and Wigglesworthia glossinidia. To determine the exact origin of the 60 kDa molecule, a protein microchemical approach involving two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry was used. Peptide mass maps were compared to virtual peptide maps predicted for S. glossinidius and W. glossinidia 60 kDa chaperone sequences. Four signature peptides were identified, revealing that the source of the chaperone was W. glossinidia. Comparative 2-D gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting further revealed that this protein was localized to the bacteriome and not the distal portion of the tsetse midgut. The possible function of this highly abundant endosymbiont chaperone in the tsetse midgut is discussed.  相似文献

Abundance and distribution of mammals in Katavi National Park, Tanzania   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ground transects were used to determine densities of 24 larger mammals in Katavi National Park. The Park consists of miombo woodland habitat and two seasonal lakes. Mammalian biomass was extremely high due primarily to large numbers of buffalo. The highest mammal densities were found around Lake Chada to the south-east of the Park. Contrary to earlier reports, species' densities did not differ significantly between dry, wet and intermediate seasons, suggesting that, aside from elephant and warthog, mammals did not enter or leave the Park in large numbers. Similarly, aside from zebra and waterbuck, sightings of species in different vegetation types did not change markedly between seasons. Thus, seasonal lakes in Katavi National Park support very high local concentrations rather than acting as dry season refuges for mammals outside the Park.  相似文献

Abstract Measurements of residual haematin in males of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood reared in the laboratory at 25oC suggest that blood meal digestion is completed in 4 or 5 days after feeding. However, a high proportion of haematin is present as faecal matter 2 days after feeding and it is concluded that digestion is completed sooner than indicated by the regression of logio haematin on time. Therefore, low levels of residual haematin in field-caught tsetse provide no indication of the frequency with which they feed. For this reason the effects of feeding frequency upon various reproductive parameters in the laboratory have been examined. It is concluded that the best performance is achieved by G.m. morsitans females which ingest four blood meals per inter-larval period and that for a similar performance in G.pallidipes five blood meals are required. The extent to which such feeding frequencies are a reflection of feeding activity in the field are discussed in terms of the biochemical requirements to maintain a reproductive adult female tsetse in positive energy balance.  相似文献

Abstract. A large-scale trial investigated the possibility of eradicating G.m.centralis from a traditional cattle rearing area using odour-baited targets at a reduced overall target density from 4 to 0.5-2.3 per km2, thus cutting down initial material costs by about 50%. Only the periphery of what was thought to be prime tsetse habitat (dense woodland) was treated with targets. These were all black or blue/black cloth (1.8 × 1m), sprayed with deltamethrin suspension concentrate and baited with butanone and/or acetone (40-130mg/h) and l-octen-3-ol (0.5mg/h). Although fly catches from traps and flyrounds initially dropped by approximately 3% per day and trypanosomiasis cases declined by 99% within a year, eradication was not achieved, so that more targets were deployed at a later stage. Although initially cheaper, the option of using reduced target densities proved financially unattractive because of prolonged periods of target maintenance prior to eradication. Revised strategies for tsetse control with odour-baited, insecticide-impregnated targets in west Zambia are presented.  相似文献

Studies were made of infection rates of trypanosomes in the tsetse fly Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood (Diptera: Glossinidae) when maintained in vivo (rabbits) or in vitro on high quality, gamma-irradiated, sterile defibrinated bovine blood, obtained from the Entomology Unit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). For both Trypanosoma congolense Broden and T. b. brucei Plimmer & Bradford, in vitro maintenance significantly reduced the proportion of flies that developed mature metacyclic trypanosome infections.  相似文献
