Male (N = 8) and female (N = 8) pigs were assigned to receive saline or a potent GnRH antagonist ([Ac-D2Nal1,D4-Cl-Phe2,D-Trp3,D-Arg6, D-Ala10]- GnRH*HOAc; 1 mg/kg body weight) at 14 days of age. The GnRH antagonist caused LH to decline (P less than 0.01) from 1.7 ng/ml at 0 h to less than 0.5 ng/ml during 4-32 h in males and females. Concentrations of FSH in gilts declined slowly from 75 +/- 8 to 56 +/- 5 ng/ml (P less than 0.05) at 32 h. In males FSH was low (5.7 +/- 0.5 ng/ml) at 0 h and did not change significantly. To observe the effect of long-term treatment with GnRH antagonist, 10 male and 10 female pigs, 3 days of age, were treated with saline or 1 mg GnRH antagonist per kg body weight every 36 h for 21 days. Concentrations of LH were reduced (P less than 0.01) to 0.2-0.4 ng/ml throughout the experimental period in male and female piglets treated with GnRH antagonist. Plasma FSH increased in control females, but remained suppressed (P less than 0.001) in females treated with GnRH antagonist. Treatment with the GnRH antagonist suppressed FSH levels in males on Days 8 and 16 (P less than 0.05), but not on Day 24. Treatment of females with the GnRH antagonist did not influence (P greater than 0.10) oestradiol-17 beta concentrations. Propulsive arm forces of 32 male and 9 female swimmers were measured during front crawl swimming using arms only, in a velocity range between 1.0 m s-1 and 1.8 m s-1. At constant velocity, the measured mean propulsive force Fp equals the mean active drag force (Fd). It was found that Fd is related to the swimming velocity v raised to the power 2.12 +/- 0.20 (males) or 2.28 +/- 0.35 (females). Although many subjects showed rather constant values of Fd/v2, 12 subjects gave significantly (p less than 0.01) stronger or weaker quadratic relationships. Differences in drag force and coefficient of drag between males and females (drag: 28.9 +/- 5.1 N, 20.4 +/- 1.9 N, drag coefficient: 0.64 +/- 0.09, 0.54 +/- 0.07 respectively) are especially apparent at the lowest swimming velocity (1 m s-1), which become less at higher swimming velocities. Possible explanations for the deviation of the power of the velocity from the ideal quadratic dependency are discussed.  相似文献

Sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) and average generation time (AGT) were studied in lymphocytes from 35 donors (23 females and 12 males). A higher SCE frequency was found in lymphocytes from females than from males. Smoking increased SCE frequency in lymphocytes of males, but not of females. No differences in AGTs between males and females were found. Partial correlation coefficients between SCE frequency, AGT values, donor's age and smoking were determined. A statistically significant correlation (r = 0.650, P less than 0.01) between SCE frequency and AGT was found in lymphocytes obtained from females. In lymphocytes from males statistically significant partial correlation coefficients were detected between SCE frequency and AGT (r = -0.696, P less than 0.05), SCE frequency and donor's age (r = 0.770, P less than 0.01), SCE frequency and smoking intensity (r = 0.697, P less than 0.01), AGT value and donor's age (r = 0.882, P less than 0.01), and AGT value and smoking (r = 0.634, P less than 0.05). Thus, considerable differences in number of indices between males and females exist. The present observations together with other studies (D'Souza et al., 1988) suggest that considerations for population monitoring using cytogenetic techniques (ICPEMC Publication No 14) may be supplemented with the recommendation to use (whenever it possible) only males as donors in population studies.  相似文献

The relationships between anaerobic glycolysis and the average velocity (v) sustained during running were studied in 17 top level athletes (11 males and 6 females). A blood sample was obtained within 10 min of the completion of major competitions over 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m and the blood lactate concentration [la]b was measured. In both male and female athletes [la]b was related to the relative performance, as expressed as a percentage of the athlete's best v of the season. Over 400 m, r = 0.85 (P less than 0.01) and r = 0.80 (P less than 0.05) in males and females, respectively. Over 800 m, the corresponding values were r = 0.76 (P less than 0.01) and r = 0.91 (P less than 0.01). In male runners [la]b was correlated to v: r = 0.89 (P less than 0.01) and r = 0.71 (P less than 0.02) over 400 m and 800 m, respectively. No relationship to relative performance or v was obtained over 1500 m. Energy expenditure during competition running was estimated in male runners from the [la]b values. This estimate was based mainly on the assumption that a 1 mmol.1-1 increase in [la]b corresponded to the energy produced by the utilization of 3.30 ml.O kg-1. To test the common assumption of no genetic relationship in a founding population, we calculated average relatedness (r) for the emigrants to Plymouth Colony from Europe on seven voyages from 1620 to 1633. Of 355 individuals, 255 could be individually identified and 4 generations of genealogic depth accounted for. Mean r was 0.00399 (S.D. = 0.00395) and ranged from 0 for 76 individuals to 0.01574 for a single female. There was a strong sex difference in relatedness; 91 females had a mean r of 0.00557 (S.D. = 0.00428), and 161 males had a lower mean r of 0.00308 (S.D. = 0.00349) (t = 4.71, p less than 0.001). The major difference was in the lower proportion of females with no relations (n = 12, 13.2%) compared with males (n = 64, 39.8%) (t = 5.05; p less than 0.001). If relatedness is calculated only for those with relations, females still have a significantly higher mean r value (0.00641, S.D. = 0.00393) than males (0.00511, S.D. = 0.00312) (t = 2.38, p less than 0.05). Thus a higher proportion of females had relatives migrating to the colony, and relatedness is significantly higher among them. The majority of kin links (79.8%) were those within the nuclear family--parents, children or siblings. For the continuity of kin-structured migration, relatedness was highest among voyagers in the same boat load and lower between voyages, with no apparent time trend. The low relatedness value of the Plymouth migrants is a result of community history and recruitment practices for the new colony. For this European population average relatedness was approximately an order of magnitude below that of traditional groups, and the assumption of no genetic relationship is not unwarranted.  相似文献

It is well documented that women of child-bearing age tend to have lower serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) concentrations than men. In order to explore the metabolic basis of this sex difference, we have compared the saturable binding of 125I-labeled LDL (d 1.02-1.05 g/ml) at 37 degrees C by liver membranes from healthy male and female Wistar rats of different ages (15-213 days). Woolf plots of saturable binding curves over the concentration range 15-65 micrograms LDL protein/ml were linear and compatible with a single class of binding sites. Maximum binding capacity (Bmax) was not significantly different in male and female animals of 15-19 days of age (respectively, 0.331 +/- 0.018 vs. 0.427 +/- 0.044 micrograms LDL protein/mg membrane protein, mean +/- S.E.). Thereafter, Bmax increased in females, reaching a peak of 0.635 +/- 0.042 micrograms LDL protein/mg membrane protein at 60 days. As no increase in Bmax occurred in males, values were significantly higher (P less than 0.02) in females than in males (by a mean of 61-117%) at all ages after 30 days. During ageing, serum cholesterol concentration changed reciprocally with Bmax in females (Pearson's correlation coefficient, r = -0.761, P less than 0.01) and remained essentially constant in males. The equilibrium dissociation constant for 125I-labelled LDL binding to the hepatic membranes was unaffected by both age and sex. These results provide evidence that the sex difference in the plasma total and LDL cholesterol concentrations is related, at least in part, to a greater mean LDL receptor density in the livers of females.  相似文献

Three weeks of sodium cyanate (NaCNO) intraperitoneal treatment in rats (n = 15) induced high hemoglobin O2 affinity, i.e., low PO2 at 50% hemoglobin saturation (P50), 20.5 +/- 1.4 Torr, in comparison with the mean control values, 34.5 +/- 1.6 Torr (n = 15). NaCNO rats showed a reduction in mean body weight, 376 +/- 27 g, in comparison with controls, 423 +/- 23 g (P less than 0.001). Despite arterial O2 partial pressure (PaO2) within normal limits NaCNO-treated rats had a higher systolic right ventricular pressure (SRVP), 33.7 +/- 3.1 Torr, in comparison with control value, 29.0 +/- 2.5 Torr (P less than 0.001). Right ventricle weights were significantly increased (P less than 0.001). After 60 min of an hypoxic challenge (fractional concentration of inspired O2 = 0.10) NaCNO-treated rats increased SRVP of only 7 +/- 4% compared with 46 +/- 9% in the control animals. Inducing high hemoglobin affinity in rats (n = 10; 6 wk NaCNO treatment) resulted in increases in hematocrit ratio and hemoglobin concentration (P less than 0.001). The characteristics of the red blood cell (RBC) itself changed; values of mean cell volume, mean cell hemoglobin, and mean cell hemoglobin concentration being significantly increased (P less than 0.001) when compared with mean control values. The count of nucleated RBC's appeared to be significantly higher from the 2nd wk of NaCNO treatment. Chronic NaCNO treatment was demonstrated to exert "hypoxia-like" effects since it induced prevention of normal growth, polycythemia, pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular hypertrophy, and blunted pulmonary pressor response to acute hypoxia.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Historical documents indicate that breastfeeding and weaning practices have fluctuated in England through history. In order to obtain evidence for general breastfeeding patterns in Late/Sub-Roman Britain, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values were measured in juvenile and adult skeletons (n = 87) from the cemetery of Queenford Farm, Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. As the site contained few individuals between 0-1.5 years of age, it was not possible to determine the initial timing for the introduction of weaning foods. Between ages 2-4 years, the mean +/- SD delta(13)C results (-20.2 +/- 0.3 per thousand) are significantly more negative (t = -4.03, P < 0.001) compared to adult females (-19.7 +/- 0.3 per thousand). This is interpreted as evidence of a different diet being fed to children during weaning. After age 2, the delta(15)N values gradually decline, indicating complete cessation of breastfeeding by 3-4 years. Among adults, stature (males = 1.68 +/- 0.06 m; females = 1.58 +/- 0.07 m) and sexual dimorphism (106) were low, suggesting that the population was possibly under environmental stress. The delta(13)C results for adults are similar, but females show a small but statistically significantly (t = -2.86, P < 0.01) lower mean delta(15)N value (9.9 +/- 0.9 per thousand) compared to males (10.6 +/- 0.5 per thousand). These lower female delta(15)N values possibly reflect the different physiology of the sexes (pregnancy and/or lactation) or the reduced consumption of animal/fish protein by women, and this may have been influenced by individual preference, family needs, or societal values of the era.  相似文献

We examine variation in the rate of growth in length of breast-feeding infants from rural Bangladesh. These data were collected between November 1985 and February 1986 from two rural sites. Eighty-eight infants, ranging from birth to 4 months of age at the start of the study and their mothers were measured monthly for 4 months. Length increased linearly with age over this 4-month period (infants' average bias-adjusted R2 = 0.90). The relationship between infant rate of growth in length and attained length was analyzed by two different methods: Oldham's (1962) method of regressing rate of growth on mean length and Blomqvist's (1977) method of regressing rate of growth on estimated initial length. The methods gave similar results. The rate of growth was negatively associated with mean infant length over the 4-month period (p less than 0.001); that is, shorter infants grew at a faster rate than longer infants. For every centimeter shorter the infant was, the rate of growth was 0.1 cm/mo faster on average; the effect was greater among males than among females. The average rate of growth was greater for males than for females and greater in financially solvent households and varied by site. Infant growth rate was slower among older infants than among younger infants, as expected. However, after adjusting for mean infant length, age was no longer significantly associated with infant growth rate, although mean infant length remained highly significant. Forty-one percent of the variation in infant rate of growth in length was explained by mean infant length, sex, sex by length interaction, household financial solvency, and site.  相似文献

Twenty two subjects (9 males, 13 females) were fed a fat-rich meal (1 g of fat/kg body weight). Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL) were isolated by ultracentrifugation (d less than 1.006 g/ml) from blood drawn 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 hr after the meal. Plasma triglyceride increased then decreased postprandially, while plasma apoA-I and apoB concentrations decreased. TRL triglyceride, TRL total protein, and TRL apoB concentrations all increased then decreased after the fat-rich meal. Postprandial rise in plasma triglyceride was significantly correlated with fasting plasma triglyceride levels (r = 0.66, P less than 0.001); postprandial rise in TRL triglyceride was significantly correlated with fasting TRL triglyceride levels (r = 0.58, P less than 0.01); postprandial rise in TRL apoB was not, however, significantly correlated with fasting TRL apoB levels (r = 0.37, N.S.). TRL apolipoproteins were separated by polyacrylamide gradient (4-22.5%) gel electrophoresis and protein bands were scanned in two dimensions with a laser densitometer. Relative postprandial changes in the concentration of the TRL apolipoproteins were determined. TRL apoB-100, apoB-48, apoE, and apoC increased then decreased postprandially. The increase in TRL apoB-100 after the fat-rich meal was confirmed in 8 subjects by direct measurement of apoB-100 with a monoclonal antibody ELISA assay. ApoA-I concentration in TRL was unchanged. Albumin in the TRL fraction was significantly increased 12 hr after the meal. Subjects with a greater magnitude of postprandial triglyceridemia had a greater increase in TRL triglyceride and TRL apoB, but their TRL apoB-100/apoB-48 ratios were not different from subjects with less pronounced triglyceridemia. Assuming that plasma TRL containing apoB-100 are predominantly derived from the liver, our data suggest that triglyceride-rich lipoproteins from both the liver and intestine make a significant contribution to postprandial triglyceridemia.  相似文献

We correlated the ontogeny of pulmonary beta-adrenergic receptors with the onset of surface active material (SAM) flux into tracheal fluid of male and female chronically catheterized fetal lambs. SAM flux began between 0.82 and 0.85 gestation in the females and between 0.85 and 0.89 gestation in the males and matured more rapidly thereafter in the females than in the males (P less than 0.01). beta-Adrenergic receptor binding, using [3H]dihydroalprenolol as the ligand, was saturable, linear, and stereospecific. The order of potency of competitive beta-agonists was isoproterenol greater than norepinephrine greater than epinephrine. The maximal binding capacity (Bmax) of pulmonary beta-receptors approximately doubled between 0.84 and 0.89 gestation, coinciding with the onset of SAM flux. Bmax matured as a third degree polynomial function of gestational age in females (r = 0.9, P less than 0.001) but as a linear function in males (r = 0.8, P less than 0.005). Between 0.86 and 0.93 gestation, Bmax was 1.45-fold greater in females than males (P less than 0.001). The dissociation constant of beta-receptors was not influenced significantly by gender or gestation. We conclude that maturation of pulmonary beta-receptors coincides with the onset of SAM flux in fetal lambs and that both mature more rapidly in females. We speculate that pulmonary beta-receptor maturation and SAM flux are coregulated by hormonal factors. More rapid maturation of pulmonary beta-receptors and SAM flux in females may be a factor in the female advantage with regard to pulmonary surfactant maturation and the survival of premature neonates.  相似文献

Groups of young, adult males and females performed the handgrip and standing long jump tests. Their total forearm and leg volumes were calculated from a series of circumference and length measurements, and the lean volumes (bone + muscle) calculated by taking the skinfold thickness into consideration. In the handgrip, the mean female performance was 298 N compared with 496 N for the males. In the standing long jump, mean performance expressed as distance x body mass was 87.3 kg.m for females compared with 137.7 kg.m for males. These superior performances of males could simply reflect their greater muscle mass, as the mean lean volumes of female and male limbs respectively were 0.54 l and 0.89 l for forearms, and 11.82 l and 14.82 l for the two legs. However, when the performances of males and females were grouped by lean limb volume, it was found that while in both tests there were linear relationships, males and females did not share a common line. In both tests the male relationship was at a higher level than the female; therefore, for a given lean volume, the male performance was significantly superior to that of the female. The gender difference found in this study has not been seen in other studies in which the performance of skeletal muscle has been related to the cross-sectional area of the active muscles and the possible reasons for the differences are considered.  相似文献

Serum hormones and physical performance capacity in boy athletes (AG; n = 19) were investigated during a 1-year training period (between the ages of 11.6 and 12.6 years). Six young untrained boys served as the control group (CG). The mean serum testosterone concentration increased significantly in AG (P less than 0.05) following the training period from 2.92 nmol.l-1, SD 1.04 to 5.81 nmol.l-1, SD 1.33. Significant differences were not observed in the cortisol, sex hormone binding globulin and growth hormone levels during the follow-up period. The AG clearly increased speed (P less than 0.001), speed-strength (P less than 0.01-P less than 0.001) and anaerobic capacity (P less than 0.001) whereas CG had only slight increases (NS) in physical performance capacity during a 1-year period. During the last 6-month training period significant positive correlations (r = 0.49-0.58; P less than 0.05-P less than 0.01) were observed in AG between the relative changes in testosterone, testosterone:cortisol ratio and growth hormone and the relative performance change in speed, maximal isometric force and endurance, respectively. At the end of the period significant positive correlations were observed in all subjects between the level of testosterone and speed-strength (r = 0.52-0.64; P less than 0.01-P less than 0.001) and anaerobic capacity (r = 0.49; P less than 0.05). It was concluded that an increase in anabolic activity with the synchronous training already has positive effects on trainability and physical performance capacity at an early stage in puberty.  相似文献

Because plants and animals consume or absorb different amounts of strontium and calcium, anthropologists are able to use strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios from archaeologically recovered human bone to estimate the relative contributions of meat and plants to paleodiets. Often females exhibit higher Sr/Ca ratios than males, a fact usually attributed to lower meat intake among women. However, in vivo and in vitro experiments with laboratory animals show that pregnancy and lactation elevate maternal bone strontium and depress maternal bone calcium because 1) strontium is discriminated against in favor of calcium in the transport of ions to the placenta and mammary glands and 2) pregnancy and lactation facilitate absorption of alkaline earth metals from the gut. In this study, bone Sr/Ca ratios and strontium concentrations were compared between reproductive-age females, postmenopausal females, and adult males from two late prehistoric Native American sites in Georgia: the King site (N = 43) and the Etowah site (N = 51). At the King site, the mean Sr/Ca ratio of females was over 14% greater than that of males. At Etowah, the mean strontium level of reproductive-age females exceeded that of postmenopausal females by almost 25%. Most of the difference, it is argued, is due to pregnancy and lactation. A dietary preference among pregnant and lactating women for foods high in alkaline earths, particularly nuts and corn, may also be partially responsible. Until we assess the influence variables other than nutrition exert on trace element concentrations, our reconstructions of paleodiets will be suspect.  相似文献

To study the role of the two postheparin plasma lipolytic enzymes, lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL) in high density lipoprotein (HDL) metabolism at a population level, we determined serum lipoproteins, apoproteins A-I, A-II, B, and E, and postheparin plasma LPL and HL activities in 65 subjects with a mean HDL-cholesterol of 34 mg/dl and in 62 subjects with a mean HDL-cholesterol of 87 mg/dl. These two groups represented the highest and lowest 1.4 percentile of a random sample consisting 4,970 subjects. The variation in HDL level was due to a 4.1-fold difference in the HDL2 cholesterol (P less than 0.001) whereas the HDL3 cholesterol level was increased only by 32% (P less than 0.001) in the group with high HDL-cholesterol. Serum apoA-levels were 128 +/- 2.2 mg/dl and 210 +/- 2.8 mg/dl (mean +/- SEM) in hypo- and hyper-HDL cholesterolemia, respectively. Serum apoA-II concentration was elevated by 28% (P less than 0.001) in hyperalphalipoproteinemia. The apoA-I/A-II ratio was elevated only in women with high HDL-cholesterol but not in men, suggesting that elevation of apoA-I is involved in hyperalphalipoproteinemia in females, whereas both apoA proteins are elevated in men with high HDL cholesterol. Serum concentration of apoE and its phenotype distribution were similar in the two groups. The HL activity was reduced in the high HDL-cholesterol group (21.2 +/- 1.5 vs. 38.5 +/- 1.8 mumol/h/ml, P less than 0.001), whereas the LPL activity was elevated in the group with high HDL-cholesterol compared to subjects with low HDL-cholesterol (27.8 +/- 1.3 vs. 19.9 +/- 0.8 mumol/h/ml, P less than 0.001). The HL and LPL activities correlated in opposing ways with the HDL2 cholesterol (r = 0.57, P less than 0.001 and r = 0.51, P less than 0.001, respectively), and this appeared to be independent of the relative ponderosity by multiple correlation analysis. The results demonstrate major influence of both HL and LPL on serum HDL cholesterol concentration at a population level.  相似文献

Water samples collected every 8 d from three sites on the Welsh River Dee over 29 months were examined chemically and morphologically and their heterotrophic activities assessed. Bacterial population estimates were regressed on 21 independent environmental variables using multiple linear regression analysis. Prediction equations calculated from 1975–1976 data accounted for 70% of the total variation from an upland site but only 40% for a lowland site. The validity of the prediction equations was examined by correlating the predicted and observed count data of 1977–1978. The correlations of plate count values were significant for the upper ( r = 0.64, P < 0.001) and middle reach ( r = 0.62, P < 0.01) sites but not significant for the lowland site. The direct count correlation was significant for all three sites. The permanganate value, a measure of organic matter, was the most dominant variable in the prediction equations and was shown by principal component analysis (PCA) to be linked to particulate matter and river flow. Prediction equations constructed from the PCA data accounted for less variation than the original equations but, in general, there was an agreement between the two methods of multivariate analysis. The logarithm of the heterotrophic potential ( V max) from the lowland site was shown to be a linear function of temperature ( r = 0.7, P < 0.001). A specific activity index calculated for the lowland site data gave a median value of 8.4 times 10-10μg/h/bacterial cell and was highly sensitive to temperature change ( r = 0.74, P < 0.001) whereas the median value for the upland site was 2.6 times 10-10μg/h/bacterial cell and did not respond significantly to temperature change ( r = 0.44, P > 0.05).  相似文献

Thirteen adult urban rock doves (Columba livia), 12 captured alive and one found dead, were studied from the Baltimore zoo. The mean concentration of lead in the blood for the 12 live birds was 184.5 +/- 531.2 (range 10.5-1,870 micrograms/dl). Three of the 13 birds with high measured blood and tissue lead concentrations were found at necropsy with lead shot pellets in their gizzards. Correlations were not found between concentrations of lead in the blood and body weight or hematocrit. Conversely, high correlations were noted between concentrations of lead in the blood and measured liver and kidney concentrations (r = 0.946, P less than 0.01; r = 0.993, P less than 0.01, respectively). Numbers of intranuclear acid-fast inclusions per 10 consecutive fields (100x oil immersion lens) correlated well with measured kidney lead concentrations (r = 0.990, P less than 0.001).  相似文献

To investigate possible anatomical and endocrine differences between breeding and non-breeding male naked mole-rats, 113 animals from 24 captive and 4 wild colonies were studied. While breeding males had larger reproductive tract masses compared to non-breeders relative to body mass (P less than 0.01), spermatogenesis was active in all of the non-breeding males examined histologically (n = 9) and spermatozoa were present in the epididymides. Compared with non-breeders, breeding males had significantly higher urinary testosterone concentrations (mean +/- s.e.m.: 23.8 +/- 2.3 vs 5.2 +/- 1.4 ng/mg Cr respectively; P less than 0.001), and plasma LH (10.7 +/- 1.7 vs 5.0 +/- 0.8 mi.u./ml respectively; P less than 0.01). Single doses of 0.1, 0.5 or 1.0 microgram GnRH produced a significant rise in plasma LH concentrations 20 min after s.c. injection in breeding and non-breeding males at all doses (P less than 0.001). However, there were differences in the magnitude of the LH response following administration of GnRH between breeding and non-breeding males, with non-breeding males showing a dose-response and having lower plasma LH concentrations 20 min after a single injection of 0.1 or 0.5 microgram (P less than 0.05), but not 1.0 microgram, GnRH. This apparent lack of pituitary sensitivity of non-breeding males to single doses of exogenous GnRH was reversed by 4 consecutive injections of 0.5 microgram GnRH at hourly intervals, suggesting that the reduced sensitivity may be the result of insufficient priming of the pituitary by endogenous GnRH. These results indicate that, despite the fact that non-breeding males were apparently producing mature gametes, clear endocrine deficiencies existed in male naked mole-rats.  相似文献

It is well established that sea turtles return to natal rookeries to mate and lay their eggs, and that individual females are faithful to particular nesting sites within the rookery. Less certain is whether females are precisely returning to their natal beach. Attempts to demonstrate such precise natal philopatry with genetic data have had mixed success. Here we focused on the green turtles of three nesting sites in the Ascension Island rookery, separated by 5-15 km. Our approach differed from previous work in two key areas. First, we used male microsatellite data (five loci) reconstructed from samples collected from their offspring (N = 17) in addition to data for samples taken directly from females (N = 139). Second, we employed assignment methods in addition to the more traditional F-statistics. No significant genetic structure could be demonstrated with F(ST). However, when average assignment probabilities of females were examined, those for nesting populations in which they were sampled were indeed significantly higher than their probabilities for other populations (Mann-Whitney U-test: P < 0.001). Further evidence was provided by a significant result for the mAI(C) test (P < 0.001), supporting greater natal philopatry for females compared with males. The results suggest that female natal site fidelity was not sufficient for significant genetic differentiation among the nesting populations within the rookery, but detectable with assignment tests.  相似文献

After overnight food and fluid restriction, nine healthy males were examined before, during, and after lower body positive pressure (LBPP) of 11 +/- 1 mmHg (mean +/- SE) for 30 min and before, during, and after graded lower body negative pressure (LBNP) of -10 +/- 1, -20 +/- 2, and -30 +/- 2 mmHg for 20 min each. LBPP and LBNP were performed with the subject in the supine position in a plastic box encasing the subject from the xiphoid process and down, thus including the splanchnic area. Central venous pressure (CVP) during supine rest was 7.5 +/- 0.5 mmHg, increasing to 13.4 +/- 0.8 mmHg (P less than 0.001) during LBPP and decreasing significantly at each step of LBNP to 2.0 +/- 0.5 mmHg (P less than 0.001) at 15 min of -30 +/- 2 mmHg LBNP. Plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) did not change significantly in face of this large variation in CVP of 11.4 mmHg. Mean arterial pressure increased significantly during LBPP from 100 +/- 2 to 117 +/- 3 Torr (P less than 0.001) and only at one point during LBNP of -30 +/- 2 mmHg from 102 +/- 1 to 115 +/- 5 mmHg (P less than 0.05). Heart rate did not change during LBPP but increased slightly from 51 +/- 3 to 55 +/- 3 beats/min (P less than 0.05) only at 7 min of LBNP of -30 +/- 2 mmHg. Plasma osmolality, sodium, and potassium did not change during the experiment.
