The effects of barotrauma on the short-term mortality and physical condition of Australian bass Macquaria novemaculeata were investigated after being: (1) conventionally angled and released during two tournaments in deep impoundments and (2) released untreated or subjected to venting or recompression during a manipulative experiment. All fish were released into two 20 m deep bathy-cages and monitored for 3 days. Of 238 M. novemaculeata angled during the tournaments, 43 (18·1%) had clinical signs of barotrauma or were vented and five of these later died (11·6% mortality). Catch histories varied significantly between both barotrauma and non-barotrauma fish and tournaments, but only hook ingestion significantly influenced mortality (P < 0·05). During the manipulative experiment, venting significantly influenced mortality (13·3%) compared to no treatment or recompression (no deaths). Magnetic resonance images and dissections of barotrauma fish indicated large variation among clinical signs. On the basis of these results, wherever possible M. novemaculeata suffering barotrauma should be immediately released with no treatment. Fish that are unable to resubmerge should be recompressed, while those held in live wells and released in shallow water should be vented.  相似文献

In the northern hemisphere, pike (Esox lucius Linnaeus) is one of the most important recreational fisheries resources, and regulatory or voluntary catch-and-release angling is common. No information is available about the potential sublethal impacts on pike that catch-and-release fishing may cause, such as behavioural alterations and changes in habitat choice after release. Radio telemetry with N = 20 pike was used to test the hypothesis that fish modify behaviour by reducing movement as a reaction to a catch-and-release event in a previously unfished, slightly eutrophic lake, having an area of 25 ha and located in northeastern Germany. During a 7-month tracking period, activity of pike was monitored for consecutive 24 h every week. Minimum displacement per hour (m) and distance to shore (m) were significantly lower upon the first post release tracking compared to tracking before the capture. Two tracking events after capture, both movement and distance to shore were similar to those measured during pre-angling. There were no significant relations between the change in movement and distance to shore and size of pike. In terms of habitat choice, pike significantly selected for reed and avoided the pelagic area over the whole study period that was not influenced by catch-and-release angling. The results indicated that catch-and-release induces short-term behavioural alterations in pike, probably explained by physiological disturbances and facilitated by evolved anti-predation behaviours. Such alterations, however, seem to be of short duration and reversible suggesting sublethal catch-and-release impacts on pike behaviour are limited. Guest editors: J. M. Farrell, C. Skov, M. This study assessed the protracted effects of two angling treatments (mild and harsh) on the post‐release mortality, gonadal development and somatic condition of Australian bass Macquaria novemaculeata in a pond‐based experiment. Angled fish were destructively sampled (along with controls) three times: immediately before, and 1 or 4 weeks after release into cages. Compared with the other groups, harshly angled fish had similar, low immediate and short‐term mortalities (≤5%), but significant delayed mortality (25%) and fed only minimally. None of these fish ejected ingested hooks. Forty‐six per cent of captive fish (across all groups) and 20% of wild fish had non‐ripening gonads (stage I) prior to, or during, the experiment. In females with ripening ovaries (stages II or III), neither angling treatment significantly reduced standardized gonadal mass. The mean per cent of atretic oocytes increased among females in all groups, but was significantly greater in those that were harshly angled. The results demonstrated that the gonadal development of M. novemaculeata could be suppressed or impaired (by angling, handling and confinement), and that further research is warranted. In particular, the timing and severity of angling in relation to the stage of gonadal development could have important implications for the introduction of temporal restrictions to angling.  相似文献

1. Fish stocking is an increasingly common management tool for freshwater and marine environments and is often used to create and maintain fisheries in closed waters. The densities at which fish are stocked can have a large impact on a stocking programme’s success and sustainability. Stocking densities in impoundment sport‐fisheries, for example, are often based on social or practical factors, and ecologically based stocking models are needed to assist the selection of stocking densities that are appropriate for the environment. 2. In this study, stocking density is calculated with a numerical model that balances the supply of prey production with the energetic demand of stocked fish. The model aims to deliver outcomes over a range of potential management objectives, by providing specific consumption scenarios that represent the trade‐off between population abundance and individual body size in stocked fisheries. 3. The model uses a steady‐state population approach to calculate stocking density, which optimises population consumption by maintaining a consistent biomass distribution and encourages sustainable stocking by considering the energetic needs of all cohorts. Carrying capacity is represented by the steady‐state stocking density under a minimum consumption scenario (when fish meet only their minimum energetic needs). The comparison between a desired consumption rate and the existing level of production is used to assess the status or ‘health’ of the existing population and is used to determine whether stocking can occur and whether stocking densities can be sustainably increased. The probability of incorrectly assuming populations are achieving a given consumption level is also estimated, which is an ideal approach for interpreting multiple probability distributions. 4. A Monte‐Carlo analysis of uncertainty was used to provide a probability distribution of stocking density of Australian bass (Macquaria novemaculeata) in three Australian impoundments under various seasonal and consumption scenarios. The likely consumption rates of the existing populations were determined using historical stocking densities, which showed that the three populations were of reasonable health, although one impoundment may be overstocked. The steady‐state stocking densities depended on the desired consumption rate, and there was an eightfold difference in the stocking density aimed at providing large ‘trophy’ fish and the density required to reach carrying capacity. 5. Model outputs of existing abundance and biomass density agreed with empirical estimates of abundance and relative density in these impoundments, which provides support to the model’s accuracy. This supply–demand approach to estimating the range of appropriate stocking densities shows promise as a decision‐support tool for stocked impoundments and other closed fisheries.  相似文献

Two southern Illinois reservoirs were investigated with contrasting size structures of yellow bass (Morone mississippiensis) to compare growth, mortality and recruitment patterns. Yellow bass were collected from Crab Orchard and Little Grassy lakes during April–May 2009 using AC electrofishing. Total length and weight were recorded and sagittal otoliths sectioned and aged by two readers. Increments between otolith annuli were measured and the Weisberg linear growth model was used to assess age and environmental (growth year) effects on individual growth for fish from the two lakes. Von Bertalanffy growth models indicated faster growth and a greater maximum total length for yellow bass in Little Grassy Lake. However, growth of fish in Little Grassy Lake nearly ceased after age 4. The Weisberg model indicated differences in individual growth rate between the two lakes that were consistent across years (age effects were significant, but growth year effects and the age‐growth year interaction were not). Inter‐lake differences in fish growth were present up to age 3. Recruitment was relatively stable in Crab Orchard, with year classes up to age 7 observed. Recruitment was more erratic in Little Grassy, with age 5 being the dominant year class and fish up to age 11 present. Differences in growth and recruitment patterns for yellow bass in the two lakes may be attributed to substantial inter‐lake differences in turbidity, morphoedaphic index, or yellow bass density. Maximum age of yellow bass (age 11) was higher than previously reported for this species, likely due to the use of otoliths to age fish rather than scales. This study provides baseline information on age and growth, mortality, recruitment, and size structure of yellow bass that can be compared to data in future studies to elucidate factors influencing population dynamics of this species.  相似文献

A field experiment was done to quantify the mortality of fish released during a recreational angling tournament in Botany Bay, Australia. Participating boat-based anglers were divided into two groups, each representing different typical catch-and-release events. The first group (termed the ‘live weigh-in group’) retained the largest two individuals of 4 species (dusky flathead, Platycephalus fuscus, yellowfin bream, Acanthopagrus australis, sand whiting, Sillago ciliata, and trevally, Pseudocaranx dentex) in onboard holding tanks and then presented these to researchers at designated weigh-in times and stations. Gear, operational and handling data were collected before 125 fish were tagged using plastic t-bar tags, returned to the anglers and then released into two sea cages. The second group (termed the ‘immediate-release group’) immediately released 224 fish into two sea cages, after they were tagged and relevant data recorded by onboard observers. This group represented those fish routinely discarded (i) as part of catch-and-immediate-release tournaments and/or (ii) due to minimum legal sizes and/or personal quotas. Appropriate species and numbers of ‘control’ fish were seined and placed into two sea cages. All fish were monitored for mortalities over 10 days. Dusky flathead, yellowfin bream, trevally and snapper, Pagrus auratus accounted for more than 85% of the total catch. Their adjusted mortalities ranged between 0% and 36.6%. Irrespective of the treatment, most yellowfin bream and snapper deaths occurred within 3 h of being hooked and released into the cages, while trevally and dusky flathead showed a delayed mortality over 4 days. Owing to confounding effects due to their confinement, dusky flathead were excluded from further analyses. Anatomical hook location and the time between capture and release were significant predictors of mortality for yellowfin bream and trevally, respectively (p < 0.01), but none of the various gear, operational or handling factors examined were significant for snapper (p > 0.05). The results are discussed in terms of species-specific variabilities in mortalities, their causal effects and better management of catch-and-release events.  相似文献

Parental care requires a complex integration of physiology and behaviour, yet little is known about the physiological and energetic consequences or correlates of these behaviours. Using two species of male black bass (smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu; largemouth bass, M. salmoides) as a model, the focus of this study was to determine the biochemical and hematological indicators of change in nutritional status and potential for chronic stress. This was accomplished by randomly sampling individuals at four stages across parental care. Additionally, a subset of individuals was repeatedly sampled at three brood development stages to track changes in biochemical factors within the individual. Though there were changes in physiological factors across parental care in randomly sampled fish of both species (declines in plasma glucose in largemouth bass; decreases in hematocrit and plasma chloride in smallmouth bass), repeated sampling of individuals was determined to be a more appropriate sampling technique due to natural variability in biochemical factors among individual fish. Repeated sampling of smallmouth bass did not adversely influence physiological metrics or brood abandonment. However, there were higher incidences of nest abandonment in repeatedly sampled largemouth bass. Amongst the repeatedly sampled smallmouth bass, nutritional indicators such as plasma triglyceride levels decreased indicating individual fasting across the majority of parental care. Increases in plasma calcium and magnesium towards the end of care indicated that feeding most likely resumed when the brood was close to independence after ~3 weeks of care. Lastly, several indicators of chronic stress, such as plasma glucose and chloride levels, increased throughout the parental care period. These sublethal stressors are indicative of decreasing body condition associated with prolonged activity and fasting which may have marked impacts on the ability of an individual to continue parental care for the current brood and impact subsequent individual fitness. Further research into the mechanistic relationships between behaviour, physiology, and energetics during the parental care period will provide a better understanding of the decisions by individuals facing multiple trade-offs that ultimately lead to differences in individual fitness.  相似文献

The Olifants River, a tributary of the Limpopo River system, is one of the most polluted rivers in South Africa. In May 2011 the concentrations of metals in fish muscle tissue from two impoundments, Loskop and Flag Boshielo dams, on the Olifants River were measured and a human health risk assessment conducted to investigate whether it was safe to consume Labeo rosae from these impoundments. Labeo rosae is one of the most common pan fish in these impoundments and is readily available to rural communities. Metals are accumulating in the muscle tissue of L. rosae even although the fish populations appear to be healthy. At Loskop Dam all L. rosae analysed exceeded the recommended hazard quotient (HQ) of 1 for antimony, and less than 50% exceeded that for lead. At Flag Boshielo Dam, the recommended HQ was exceeded for lead in less than 50% of L. rosae analysed, and more than 50% exceeded that for antimony. The weekly consumption of 150?g of L. rosae muscle tissue from these impoundments may pose an unacceptable health risk to rural communities.  相似文献

A purpose-built, water-filled sorting tray was compared against a conventional dry tray for its utility in reducing discard mortality across a range of conditions in an Australian estuarine penaeid-trawl fishery, including the limits of typical delays in starting sorting (2 vs. 15 min). During nine days of fishing, up to 10 replicate deployments were done for each sorting method and delay. Bycatches (44 389 teleosts comprising 15 species) were assessed for their immediate mortalities, before 1346 live individuals (10 species) were released (to simulate discarding) into replicate cages and monitored for their short-term mortalities over five days. Appropriate controls were included for the most abundant economically-important species, yellowfin bream, Acanthopagrus australis. Most trawled-and-discarded teleosts followed a pattern of minimal differences in immediate mortalities between sorting methods for the short delay, but generally fewer deaths in the water tray than in the conventional tray during the longer delay. However, owing to a dominant and slightly protracted influence of the trawling process, comparable rates of deaths were observed for caged fish irrespective of their post-capture treatment. Mixed-effects logistic models applied to four key species (A. australis; silver biddy, Gerres subfasciatus; southern herring, Herklotsichthys castelnaui; and Port Jackson glassfish, Ambassis jacksoniensis) revealed that in addition to the method and delay in sorting, the weights of total catch and jellyfish, salinity and the size of fish also had significant impacts on mortality. For the longer delay in sorting in the water tray, the influences of some of the other factors were negated so that total mortalities of three of the modelled species were reduced by almost one quarter. We conclude that while unaccounted fishing mortality can be reduced via changes to onboard sorting procedures, this approach should only be applied ancillary to efficient gear selectivity.  相似文献

Sea bass with approximate average weights of 5 and 20 g were treated against Ceratothoa oestroides infection with: (i) medicated pellets of diflubenzuron PC90 at a dosage of 3 mg kg?1 body weight (BW) per day for 14 days. Lice were counted at the beginning of treatment and 19 days after treatment. The drug cleared all lice in the treated group; in the control group, infection remained high 30 days after beginning the experiment. It was concluded that medicated pellets containing 3 mg kg?1 BW diflubenzuron effectively cleared pre‐adult and adult stages of the isopod parasite over a 14‐day period. No adverse effects were recorded in treated sea bass during the trials and no reinfection occurred 15 days after end of the treatment. (ii) Deltamethrin by means of bath treatments in infected sea bass kept in experimental tanks at 20°C. Before treatment, toxicity on healthy fish was preliminarily assessed by testing five fish from each size group at concentrations of 30, 10, 5, 3, 1, 0.1, 0.05 and 0.01 mg L?1 for 30 min. The therapeutic concentrations tested were: 10, 5, 3, 0.15, 0.1, and 0.05 μg L?1 and assessed at 1, 24 and 48 h. Best results were achieved with the 10 μg L?1 (0.01 mg L?1) dose, where prevalence was reduced from 100 to 0% over 24 h in both large and small fish. No parasite recovery was observed at 48 h. The dose of 5 μg L?1 reduced prevalence from 100 to 11.7% and to 0% for small and large fish, respectively. Finally, with the 3 μg L?1 dose, prevalence was reduced from 100 to 37.5% (small fish) and to 13.3% (large fish). Lower doses were ineffective on the parasites at either 24 or 48 h.  相似文献

Acoustic telemetry and scuba revealed immediate and high post-stocking mortality of razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus in Lake Mohave, U.S.A., a Colorado River impoundment. At the conclusion of this 6 month study, only three of 19 (16%) study fish remained active. Concurrently, 20 X. texanus implanted with acoustic transmitters and held in a hatchery raceway remained healthy throughout the experiment and no transmitters were shed. Post-stocking mortality was probably due to predation by striped bass Morone saxatilis , a piscivorous non-native fish.  相似文献

Effects of angling on feeding by largemouth bass   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Angling practice significantly effected the time required for largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides to begin feeding. Mean ± s.e. time until feeding resumed was longest for fish that experienced a simulated tournament (15·6 ± 2·2 h) followed by fish that were caught and released (8·4 ± 2·2 h) and controls (0·3 ± 1·6 h). Effects on feeding related to angling practices were maintained throughout the 48 h observation period. Using multiple logistic regression and bioenergetics simulations, decreased growth in fish subjected to competitive or catch-and-release angling events was predicted. Fish subjected to multiple captures in a pond experiment had greater mass loss than those not captured, supporting model predictions.  相似文献

Fishmeal has long been a staple protein feedstuff for fish, but its global shortage and high price have prompted its replacement with alternative sustainable sources. In this experiment involving largemouth bass (a carnivorous fish), a new mixture of feedstuffs (45% poultry byproduct meal, 30% soybean meal, 15% blood meal, and 10% krill shrimp meal) was added to low (14.5%) fishmeal diets along with 0.0%, 0.5% taurine, 0.5% methionine, or 0.5% taurine plus 0.5% methionine (dry matter basis). The positive control diet [65.3% fishmeal (46% crude protein on dry matter basis)] and all low-fishmeal diets contained 40% true protein and 10% lipids. There were 3 tanks per treatment group (20 fish/tank). Fish with the mean initial body weight of 16.6 g were fed to satiety twice daily. Compared with the unsupplemented low-fishmeal group, supplementing either 0.5% methionine or 0.5% methionine plus 0.5% taurine to the low-fishmeal diet improved (P < 0.05) the growth, feed utilization, retention of dietary protein and lipids, and health of largemouth bass, reduced (P < 0.05) the occurrence of black skin syndrome from ~ 40 to ~ 10%. Histological sections of tissues from the fish with black skin syndrome showed retina degeneration, liver damage, and enteritis in the intestine. Compared with methionine supplementation, supplementing 0.5% taurine alone to the low-fishmeal diet did not affect the growth or feed efficiency of fish and had less beneficial effects (P < 0.05) on ameliorating the black skin syndrome. These results indicated that: (a) the basal low-fishmeal diet was inadequate in methionine or taurine; and (b) dietary supplementation with methionine was an effective method to improve the growth performance, feed efficiency, and health of largemouth bass. Further studies are warranted to understand the pathogenesis of the black skin syndrome in largemouth bass.

To test the size range of prey fish that largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, can successfully consume, live Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis, were given as prey fish to individual largemouth bass in aquaria. The ratio of maximum standard length (SL) of the Japanese dace consumed by largemouth bass was 46–69% of bass SL. The maximum length of Japanese dace consumed did not differ significantly between largemouth bass and smallmouth bass (M. dolomieu) previously studied, although largemouth bass have relatively larger mouth sizes than smallmouth bass. Largemouth bass occasionally injured and killed Japanese dace larger than the limit that could be consumed.  相似文献

Vibrio harveyi was isolated from internal organs or ulcers of diseased and apparently healthy gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultured in several fish farms located on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The prevalence of the bacterium was significantly higher in European sea bass than in gilthead sea bream, and was closely related to the season in both fish species, occurring almost exclusively on warm months (June to November). After phenotypic characterization, a selection of forty five isolates from gilthead sea bream, sea bass, and several isolates previously obtained from common dentex (Dentex dentex) of the same area, were molecularly typed by automated ribotyping and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Cluster analysis of data established 8 RAPD types and 13 ribotypes among wild isolates, and the combination of both techniques allowed to define fourteen different groups and a clear discrimination of all outbreaks and samplings. Several strains isolated from diseased gilthead sea bream and sea bass and also from asymptomatic sea bream, were tested for virulence in both fish species by intracoelomic injection. All the isolates (11) were pathogenic for sea bass, with nine out of the eleven LD50 values ranging from 1.5 x 10(5) to 1.6 x 10(6) cfu/fish. Gilthead sea bream was unaffected by the seven tested strains, even by those more virulent for sea bass, and only one strain caused a 10% mortality at 4.2 x 10(7) cfu/fish. This is the first report on virulence of V. harveyi for sea bass.  相似文献

Metal concentrations in the gill, muscle and liver tissues of Labeo rosae from two impoundments, Loskop and Flag Boshielo dams on the Olifants River, were evaluated in 2011 to detect patterns in metal associations between tissues and impoundments. Elevated concentrations of Ba, Zn, B, Al, Si and Fe, relative to a pristine site in the catchment, were found in the muscle, liver and gill tissues at both impoundments. Molybdenum concentrations were exceptionally high in all tissues at Loskop Dam and in liver at Flag Boshielo Dam. No definite pattern in the ratio metal concentrations within, or between, fish tissues was identified. The expected trend, liver > gills > muscle, was found at both impoundments, but was less prominent at Loskop Dam. Metal concentrations in muscle of Loskop Dam fish were significantly higher than in those at Flag Boshielo Dam. The inverse was true for liver. The long-term impact of elevated metal concentrations on fish health at both impoundments raises concern.  相似文献

Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus develop characteristic skin ulcers in response to infection by the oomycete Aphanomyces invadans. To investigate pathogenicity, we conducted a dose response study. Juvenile menhaden were inoculated subcutaneously with 0, 1, 5, 10, 100, and 500 secondary zoospores per fish and monitored for 37 d post-injection (p.i.). Survival rates declined with increasing zoospore dose, with significantly different survivorship curves for the different doses. Moribund and dead fish exhibited characteristic ulcerous lesions at the injection site starting at 13 d p.i. None of the sham-injected control fish (0 zoospore treatment) died. The LD50 (lethal dose killing 50% of exposed menhaden) for inoculated fish was estimated at 9.7 zoospores; however, some fish receiving an estimated single zoospore developed infections that resulted in death. Menhaden were also challenged by aqueous exposure and confirmed that A. invadans was highly pathogenic by this more environmentally realistic route. Fish that were acclimated to culture conditions for 30 d, and presumably free of skin damage, then aqueously exposed to 100 zoospores ml(-1), exhibited 14% lesion prevalence with 11% mortality. Net-handled fish that were similarly infected had a significantly higher lesion prevalence (64%) and mortality (64%). Control fish developed no lesions and did not die. Scanning electron microscopy of fish skin indicated that zoospores adhered to intact epidermis, germinated and penetrated the epithelium with a germ tube. Our results indicate that A. invadans is a primary pathogen of menhaden and is able to cause disease at very low zoospore concentrations.  相似文献

The influence of feeding on swimming performance and exercise recovery in fish is poorly understood. Examining swimming behavior and physiological status following periods of feeding and fasting is important because wild fish often face periods of starvation. In the current study, researchers force fed and fasted groups of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) of similar sizes for a period of 16 days. Following this feeding and fasting period, fish were exercised for 60 s and monitored for swimming performance and physiological recovery. Resting metabolic rates were also determined. Fasted fish lost an average of 16 g (nearly 12%) of body mass, while force fed fish maintained body mass. Force fed fish swam 28% further and required nearly 14 s longer to tire during exercise. However, only some physiological conditions differed between feeding groups. Resting muscle glycogen concentrations was twofold greater in force fed fish, at rest and throughout recovery, although it decreased in both feeding treatments following exercise. Liver mass was nearly three times greater in force fed fish, and fasted fish had an average of 65% more cortisol throughout recovery. Similar recovery rates of most physiological responses were observed despite force fed fish having a metabolic rate 75% greater than fasted fish. Results are discussed as they relate to largemouth bass starvation in wild systems and how these physiological differences might be important in an evolutionary context.  相似文献

The relationship between river flows, summarized by hydrological indices, and catches of Australian bass Macquaria novemaculeata from recreational fishing competitions were examined in the Hawkesbury‐Nepean River system. Between 55 and 198 fishermen took part in six monthly fishing competitions. The number of hours fished increased from 570 to 1800 h between 1998 and 2001. A total of 11 275 Australian bass were caught over the study period. The percentage of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) Australian bass and the catch of fish per unit effort was influenced by either the flow regime occurring in the same year and flow in the previous year. The number of Australian bass caught per unit effort was positively associated with the median volume of water and the number and duration of high flow events occurring in the previous year. The percentage of YOY Australian bass caught in any one year was positively associated with the median flow in the same year of capture and the maximum, mean and variation of daily flows, the number and duration of high flow events and the greatest rise and fall of daily flows in the previous year.  相似文献

Embryos, larvae and fry of the cyprinidontid Rivulus cylindraceus, subjected to sublethal concentrations of the branched alkyl benzene sulfonate TBS, were investigated with respect to mortality rates, deformities, hatching and activity (frequency of heart pulsation, pectoral fin beating and body movements of the embryos, swimming behaviour and activity of larvae and fry). If environmental conditions are optimal, sublethal concentrations seem to have no effect on an entire larval or young fish stock. On the other hand, if other stressing environmental factors of natural or human origin accompany them, such as lack of nutritional supply, an effect on a stock is possible at low sublethal concentrations.  相似文献
