This contribution analyses the primacy of classification over generalization, and the philosophy of total evidence that emerges from the relation of homology to character statements. Primary conjectures of homology are basic character statements, i.e. statements that predicate properties of organisms, properties that are instantiated by those organisms and/or their parts. Secondary conjectures of homology are embedded in a second‐level (metalinguistic) discourse that turns on the coherence or incoherence of those basic character statements relative to a hierarchy. The coherence or incoherence of character statements is a logical relation between statements, not a causal (historical) relation between organisms. The choice of the hypothesis of relationships that is supported by the largest set of coherent basic character statements is based on the empirical presupposition that the properties referred to by the set of coherent character statements are grounded in causally efficacious relations of inheritance and ontogeny, and co‐instantiated because they are inherited through common ancestry (Hennig's auxiliary principle). Unless that empirical presupposition is causally grounded, phylogeny reconstruction is of an inherently probabilistic nature, whether under parsimony or other models of analysis. The causal grounding of a coherent set of character statements typically seeks a link between character statements and causally efficacious generative mechanisms for morphological characters (as is defeasibly indicated by topology and connectivity), or secondary structure information for molecular characters.  相似文献

The fragments of the figurine called “lion-man” were found in 1939 in the cave of Hohlenstein-Stadel, in southwestern Germany. Joachim Hahn was the first to assemble the figure in 1969; the statuette was then restored between 1987 and 1988 in the workshops of the regional museum of Württemberg in Stuttgart. New excavations, conducted by the State Office for Cultural Heritage of Baden-Württemberg (Esslingen, Germany), were held in the same cave between 2009 and 2013. Then, hundreds of small fragments were found; some of them clearly belonged to the lion-man. Following these excavations, a second restoration was undertaken in the workshops of the State office of Cultural Heritage in 2012 and 2013. The Lion-Man, the tallest of the figures from the last Ice Age, got a new appearance. After the refitting of the fragments, a large part of the figurine has been completed.  相似文献

Effect of nanoparticles of different nature on development of the populations of top and bottom fermentation brewers’ yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on various media and on ethanol accumulation during wort fermentation was studied. In some cases the presence of nanoparticles in the medium was shown to affect the monitored parameters, primarily the yeast cell titer. Direction and intensity of this effect depend on a number of factors: nanopreparation kind and concentration, medium composition, and cultivation conditions. Inhibition of development of yeast populations was most pronounced in the presence of the silver nanopreparation, while zinc nanoparticles and zinc oxide nanopreparation had the least effect. At the same time, specific concentrations of some nanoparticles stimulated growth of the population and yeast metabolism.  相似文献

In a pioneering book, Philosophy of Microbiology, Maureen O’Malley argues for the philosophical importance of microbes through an examination of their impact on ecosystems, evolution, biological classification, collaborative behavior, and multicellular organisms. She identifies many understudied conceptual issues in the study of microbes. If philosophers follow her lead, the philosophy of biology will be expanded and enriched.  相似文献

Summary  The original collections of Salix species described by Pallas are discussed. Eight names validated by Pallas and one by Nasarov are typified. The use of six currently accepted names, S. arbutifolia Pall., S. arctica Pall., S. berberifolia Pall., S. caspica Pall., S. divaricata Pall. and S. rhamnifolia Pall., is confirmed. Salix serotina Pall. retains its place as a synonym of S. viminalis L. Salix gmelinii Pall. is resurrected and proposed as the correct name for the taxon previously known as S. dasyclados Wimm. S. burjatica Nasarow and S. jacutica Nasarow, the old synonyms of S. dasyclados, therefore are now also synonyms of S. gmelinii. A new combination S. rosmarinifolia L. subsp. sibirica is proposed.  相似文献

The identification of Mendelian mutations in rare forms of familial Parkinsons disease (PD) have provided significant insights into the molecular pathogenesis of this common complex disorder. DJ-1 is the third of four genes known to be definitively causal in familial PD, the three others being -synuclein, parkin and the recently identified PINK1. Mutations in the DJ-1 gene were identified in two European families, a Dutch kindred harbouring a large homozygous genomic deletion encompassing exons 1–5 of the gene and an Italian kindred with a homozygous L166P missense mutation. The clinical phenotype of the two families was similar to that of parkin cases. Age of onset was in the mid-thirties with good responsiveness to l-dopa and slow disease progression. Focal dystonias and blepharospasm were also evident as were behavioural disturbances early in the course of the disease. To date, there are no studies of pathological material from known DJ-1 patients. It therefore remains to be determined whether these patients form Lewy bodies and/or Lewy neurites, the eosinophilic fibrillary inclusions that contain predominantly -synuclein and that are the pathological hallmark of PD.  相似文献

Impact of Women’s Harvest Practices on Pandanus guillaumetii in Madagascar’s Lowland Rainforests. Pandanus guillaumetii B.C. Stone is endemic to the east coast rainforests of Madagascar. The plant is an important non-timber forest product (NTFP) for the local population living near these forests, and its leaves are collected by women to be woven into mats. These mats have economic value and are also used for daily activities. At present, little is known about how local harvesting practices impact this plant species. In this study, we describe women’s local harvest practices and quantify their impact on the P. guillaumetii population. We carried out plant inventories as well as interviews and participatory observations with local people harvesting P. guillaumetii in two villages with different population densities in the Manompana region. Inventories were conducted at varying distances from the villages in order to better understand the influence of human pressure on the plant population. The results suggest that local communities apply practices that tend to minimize the harvest impact on the plant. Harvesting seems to have no effect on the actual density of P. guillaumetii. However, the availability of plants with leaves of sufficient quality for mat production is influenced by human pressure. Considering the decreasing number of plants suitable for handicraft, we assume that their availability in the long term may not fulfill the needs of the local people.  相似文献

Sprouting axillary buds sampled from a mature 27-year-old shrub of Cornus mas ‘Macrocarpa’ were used as starting material for in vitro culture establishment. Multiple shoot cultures, grown on basal woody plant medium with the pH adjusted to 5.6–5.7 and supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine in combination with 1-naphthaleneacetic acid, were capable of continuous axillary and adventitious shoot proliferation up to 1 year. Later on, growth ceased, shoot tip necrosis appeared and shoot cultures died. Transfer of living shoots onto modified woody plant medium with the pH adjusted to 6.8–7.0 led to vigorous growth of multiple shoot cultures without any loss of multiplication rates or decreased vitality for several years. The use of 6-benzylaminopurine in combination with 1-naphthaleneacetic acid proved superior to the application of thidiazuron which induced a frequent formation of short and fasciated shoots. 1-naphthaleneacetic acid promoted in vitro adventitious rooting frequency up to 73.3%, whereas indole-3-butyric acid was not effective. Ex vitro acclimatized plants did not show any visually detectable morphological variation.  相似文献

Immobilised-cell fermentors offer great benefits compared to traditional free-cell systems. However, a major problem is unbalanced flavour production when these fermentors are used for the production of alcoholic beverages. One of the keys to obtaining better control over flavour formation may be the concentration of dissolved CO2, which has inhibitory effects on yeast growth and metabolism. This article demonstrates that the presence of immobilisation matrices facilitates the removal of CO2 from the liquid medium, which results in a low level of dissolved CO2 during fermentation. Moreover, the formation of volatile higher alcohols and esters was greatly enhanced in the immobilised-cell system when compared to the free cell system. By sparging a CO2 flow (45 ml/min) into the immobilised-cell system, cell growth was reduced by 10–30% during the active fermentation stage, while the fermentation rate was unaffected. The uptake of branched-chain amino acids was reduced by 8–22%, and the formation of higher alcohols and esters was reduced on average by 15% and 18%, respectively. The results of this study suggest that mismatched flavour profiles with immobilised-cell systems can be adjusted by controlling the level of dissolved CO2 during fermentation with immobilised yeast.  相似文献

The effects of six basal media on in vitro shoot proliferation of the greek grapevines Vitis vinifera L. cv. ‘Malagouzia’ and ‘Xinomavro’ were investigated. Galzy and Zlenco proved to be the most effective for ‘Malagouzia’ and ‘Xinomavro’, respectively. If only BA was present in the medium, shoot development was poor and the plantlets were chlorotic. When the medium was supplemented with BA and NAA, growth was enhanced. The best ratio (in μM) of growth regulators was 0.5/0.3 for ‘Malagouzia’, and 0.1/0.03 for ‘Xinomavro’, which resulted in the highest number of microshoots per explant and greatest proliferation rate. The development of ‘Malagouzia’ and ‘Xinomavro’ explants at 21±2 and 26±2°C was also investigated, revealing the higher temperature to be more effective. Regarding rooting, 0.5 μM IBA improved root formation at 26°C for ‘Malagouzia’ and 0.5 μM IBA at 21°C for ‘Xinomavro’. Moreover, 0.5 μM IBA resulted in a higher rooting percentage (>95%) and proved to be more beneficial for the overall morphological appearance of the plantlets of ‘Malagouzia’. After acclimatization, survival of microshoots cultivated in media with IBA was higher than those in NAA.  相似文献

We have successfully produced single-cell colonies of C. merolae mutants, lacking the PsbQ’ subunit in its PSII complex by application of DTA-aided mutant selection. We have investigated the physiological changes in PSII function and structure and proposed a tentative explanation of the function of PsbQ’ subunit in the PSII complex.

Abstract

We have improved the selectivity of the Cyanidioschyzon merolae nuclear transformation method by the introduction of diphtheria toxin genes into the transformation vector as an auxiliary selectable marker. The revised method allowed us to obtained single-cell colonies of C. merolae, lacking the gene of the PsbQ’ extrinsic protein. The efficiency of gene replacement was extraordinarily high, allowing for a complete deletion of the gene of interest, without undesirable illegitimate integration events. We have confirmed the absence of PsbQ’ protein at genetic and protein level. We have characterized the physiology of mutant cells and isolated PSII protein complex and concluded that PsbQ’ is involved in nuclear regulation of PSII activity, by influencing several parameters of PSII function. Among these: oxygen evolving activity, partial dissociation of PsbV, regulation of dimerization, downsizing of phycobilisomes rods and regulation of zeaxanthin abundance. The adaptation of cellular physiology appeared to favorite upregulation of PSII and concurrent downregulation of PSI, resulting in an imbalance of energy distribution, decrease of photosynthesis and inhibition of cell proliferation.

The role of ethnic resources in the educational success of immigrants is highly disputed. Combining arguments of segmented assimilation and Coleman's concept of family social capital, this study investigates whether speaking one's language of origin at home relates to achievement by facilitating the mobilization of resources or their transmission from parents to children. Mediating and moderating mechanisms are disentangled and empirically questioned in regression models that predict the mathematical competences of immigrant students from Turkey, Poland and the former Soviet Union. Based on data from the German National Educational Panel Study, the results contradict the assumption that foreign language use will contribute to education through mechanisms of social capital. Regardless of parental human capital or the group of origin, the language used at home does not affect the students’ learning when German language proficiency is accounted for.  相似文献

Dermatophytes are among the most common fungal agents causing superficial skin infections worldwide. Epidemiology of these infections is evolving and variable in every country. This report presents the Belgian epidemiological data regarding the distribution of dermatophytes species isolated by the two national reference centers for mycosis during a period of 5 years (2012–2016). Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated species, considering all sampling sites (60.3% on average between 2012 and 2016). More precisely, this dermatophyte was the major agent of Tinea unguium and Tinea corporis during this period, followed by species of the Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex. Moreover, Microsporum audouinii was the main etiological agent of Tinea capitis (TC) with a frequency of 52.5% on average between 2012 and 2016. Other African dermatophytes species such as Trichophyton soudanense and Trichophyton violaceum were also agents of TC with a respective prevalence of 11.6% and 11.5% on average. This study highlights a different dermatophyte distribution in Belgium in comparison with other European countries.

The paper summarizes literature data and results of many-year Laboratory studies disclosing principles of the multiform spatial-time organization of differing by rates of neurophysiologic brain processes as the universal “language” of its informational-controlling functions. There are considered current concepts of electrogenesis and physiological significance of ratios of gradual changes of biopotentials and impulse activity of neurons considered in studies of cerebral mechanisms of regulation of normal and pathological states, and organization of human psychic activity. Put forward and argumented are concepts of the probability principle of hierarchical organization of differing by rates of neurophysiologic processes brain zones, structures, and areas in formation of the brain systems participating in provision of the higher psychic functions and states. It is proposed to discuss the concept of the brain as the “swimming,” many-contour, neurodynamic informational-controlling suprasystem with universal, hierarchically organized neurodynamic structures—”functional organs” by A.A. Ukhtomskii (1978), of which formation provides large informational brain capacity and a wide specter of adaptive possibilities of the human organism.  相似文献
