The characteristics of the averaged evoked potentials (AEP) (experiments with awake non-paralysed animals), of the evoked potentials (EP) and of the responses of single sensorimotor cortical neurons (acute experiments) of cats to tone-bursts with frequencies within 0.1-6.0 kHz were studied. Response selectivity to the tone-burst frequencies which are energetically pronounced in some biologically significant sounds for the cat was observed. The averaged curve of the dependence of the amplitude of AEP in the somatosensory cortical region (S1) on the tone-burst frequency has reliable maximum values at the frequencies of 0.8, 1.6 and 2.0-3.0 kHz. Most pronounced changes in the heart rhythm were observed within the tone-burst frequency ranges in which the AEP of the highest amplitudes were recorded. The amplitude of the AEP was found to increase during the conditioned reflex elaboration. The curve of the dependence of the probability of the EP occurrence on the frequency at equal sound pressure levels had maximum values at the frequencies of 1.6 and 3.2 kHz. The highest amplitude values of EP were found at frequencies of 0.8, 1.6 and 3.2 kHz. More than half of the recorded neurons revealed the lowest values of the response thresholds and the maximum values of the occurrence probability under suprathreshold stimulation at frequencies close to 0.8, 1.6, and 3.2 kHz. It is supposed that the above mentioned feature of the input frequency organization in sensorimotor cortex is connected with the selectivity as to the biological significance of acoustic stimuli.  相似文献

Begging behaviour by the young affects parental food distribution among nestlings of altricial birds. We present an analysis of two types of begging behaviour (assuming the front nest positions and gaping) based on videotaped natural nestling feeding in European common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus). We test whether these types of begging support the predictions of two mathematical models: scramble competition with competitive asymmetries between nestlings [Anim. Behav. 27 (1979) 1210] or honest signalling model [Nature 352 (1991) 328]. None of the measured variables of nestling or parental behaviour were affected by body weight differences between siblings. In contrast, both gaping and nest positioning were affected by individual differences in nestling hunger. In agreement with the honest signalling model, hungrier nestlings gaped with higher probability and started to gape sooner after the arrival of the parent than did their less hungry nestmates. Those nestlings with the shortest latency to gape also received food more often. Nest positioning was related to nestling hunger in a way unforeseen by the existing models. The intervals between nestling position changes were several times longer than the intervals between parental feeding visits, and parents preferred to feed nestlings in front positions, so nestlings in front positions were always less hungry than nestlings in back. Hence the pattern of movements influenced the feeding decision in favour of the more satiated nestlings and acted against the effect of gaping. Nestling movement seemed to be caused by the less hungry nestlings moving actively from front to rear positions. Low mortality of individual nestlings within broods that survived to fledging and small within‐brood variation in fledging weights indicated low competition among nestmates. We suggest that there are two behavioural mechanisms that contribute to the equalization of fledging weights in common redstart nestlings: the signalling of need through gaping and the regular turnover of nestlings at front positions.  相似文献

Nest predation accounts for the majority of nesting failure, and hence there has been strong selection on behaviour to reduce nest predation, including patterns of nest defence. Here, we test risk-taking behaviour to experimentally placed predators in the presence or absence of nestlings. We use the superb fairy-wren (Malurus cyaneus) to test the prediction that vigilance will be comparable with and without nestlings, but that alarm vocalisations will increase when nestlings are present. We found support for both predictions. Adult vigilance of predators was comparable with and without nestlings. Alarm vocalisation intensity was predicted by predator type and nestling presence, and was highest to the snake model in the presence of nestlings. These results point to selection for differentiated nest defence response in relation to predator type and the presence or absence of nestlings.  相似文献

Summary Calling song with a carrier frequency of 5 kHz evokes positive phonotaxis in female crickets,Gryllus bimaculatus, when presented at an azimuth. In contrast, a continuous tone of 4.7 kHz in the same position when paired with calling song from above leads to negative phonotaxis. Under open-loop conditions, when a tethered animal runs on a paired tread wheel, characteristic curves are produced with the stable equilibrium point towards or away from the stimulus, respectively (Fig. 3).In order to understand this sign reversal at the neuronal level, directional characteristics of the ascending acoustic inter neurons AN1 and AN2 were measured using extracellular recordings from the cervical connectives.Taking the mean spike rate of the interneurons as a measure for their excitation, the function relating response magnitude to stimulus direction for calling song corresponds well to the behavioural characteristic curve (Fig. 5). The response function obtained using a continuous tone with simultaneous presentation of calling song from above is similar (Fig. 5) and hence does not correspond to the inverse behavioural characteristic curve. However, consideration of the extent to which the temporal parameters of the calling song (syllables and chirps) are reflected in the neuronal response (amplitudes of the Fourier components) leads to characteristic curves for AN1 and AN2 which are in good agreement with the behaviour for stimulation with calling song as well as for the continuous tone experiment (Fig. 8). In addition, the neural response curves correspond to the behaviour in showing smaller amplitudes when a continuous tone rather than the calling song is presented on the horizon (Fig. 8).From these data we conclude that the activity in interneurons AN1 and AN2 does not directly guide orientation in mating behaviour but first is filtered by a mechanism tuned to the frequency of syllables and/or chirps. According to this hypothesis recognition of conspecific song and localization proceed sequentially inGryllus.  相似文献

Thresholds of field L auditory evoked potentials EP were studied in 1.5-9-day-old nestlings of pied flycatcher in response to pure tone signals of different frequencies. According to the tendencies of age dynamics of auditory EP thresholds (2-9 days of life) all hearing range was divided into three separate channels: low-frequency (0.3-1.0 kHz), intermediate-(1.5-4.0 kHz) and high-frequency (5.0-8.0 kHz) ones. The widening of the hearing range in its high-frequency part was demonstrated on days 4-5 of life. The development of auditory sensitivity was shown to continue within all three channels in postembryonic period (days 2-9 post-hatching), each of the channels being characterized by its own age dynamics of auditory EP thresholds. Reproduction of tape-recorded species song during days 1-3 post-hatching resulted in significant decrease of auditory EP thresholds.  相似文献

Altricial nestlings in structured families show a diverse array of behavioural mechanisms to compete for food, ranging from signalling scrambles to aggressive interference. Rates of filial infanticide are moderately high in white storks. It has been hypothesized that this unusual behaviour is an adaptive parental response to the absence of efficient mechanisms of brood reduction (aggression or direct physical interference) by nestlings. To test this latter assumption, we analyzed video recordings of 41 complete feeding episodes at 32 broods during the first half of the nestling period, when nestlings complete 90% of growth and chick mortality and size asymmetries are highest. Parents delivered food to all nestlings simultaneously by regurgitating on the nest floor. No direct (bill to bill) feeding was recorded. Senior nestlings were never observed to limit their junior nestlings from eating food, either by aggression or physical interference. Experimental feeding tests revealed that heavier nestlings handled prey items more efficiently and ate food at a higher speed. The high degree of tolerance shown by senior nestlings is unusual among birds with similar ecological and phylogenetic affinities, such as herons. Tolerance by seniors cannot be easily explained by absence of parental favouritism or proximate factors known to affect the occurrence of sibling aggression in other species (rate of food transfer, brood size, hatching asynchrony or length of nestling period).  相似文献

Blue Tit nests are often heavily infested by fleas, which feed on the incubating female and the nestlings. Depending on habitat quality, the drawing of blood by fleas reduces offspring quality, or it is compensated by an increase in food provisioning by the adults and may reduce their future reproduction. Given these fitness costs, tits are expected to have evolved behavioural responses enabling them to remove, destroy or minimize the contact with fleas. To identify these traits, we video-recorded the changes in frequency and duration of the hosts' potential anti-flea behavioural defences in nests experimentally infested with low and high flea densities. We also investigated whether flea load affected the number of male feeds delivered to incubating females, and whether the parents increased their rate of food provisioning to the nestlings equally at high flea density. Flea density significantly affected the nest sanitation and sleeping behaviour of Blue Tit females but had no significant effect on grooming. Female Blue Tits increased the frequency but decreased the duration of bouts of these behavioural traits, and hence their time-budgets, based on per hour duration of behaviour, were not significantly affected by flea density. High flea density reduced nestling weight at the early nestling stage but these costs were fully compensated by an increase in female feeding effort. Males did not increase their frequency of food provisioning to incubating females nor to nestlings in heavily infested nests. The results are discussed in the light of parasite-mediated selection on host behaviour and the reciprocal host selection on flea life-history and behavioural traits.  相似文献

Parent birds make efforts to prevent the immediate costs of predation through plastic behavioural responses to the actual predation risk, but this may incur future costs for offspring due to reduced parental care. However, the temporary nature of predator encounters suggests that nestling feeding reduced during the risky periods may be later compensated for by an increased feeding effort (the predation risk allocation hypothesis). We tested this prediction in the Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) confronted with its major nest predator/competitor, the European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris). A brief encounter with a live starling was followed by a reduction in the nestling feeding rate, but the lost feedings were subsequently compensated for by an increased feeding rate. This compensatory effect was higher in older nestlings that are highly demanding in terms of energy requirements and fitness value from the parents’ perspective. Thus, birds are potentially able to respond not only to the immediate risk of nest predation by nest defence but also to compensate for the potential costs of nest defence in terms of unfulfilled nestling demands. However, data on the amount of delivered food are necessary to distinguish whether parents truly compensate for lost feeding or whether the increased feeding frequency represents a nest guarding strategy.  相似文献

Two primary defence behaviours, fore-leg extension to enhance crypsis and swimming to bottom and remaining motionless, of a predatory water bug,Ranatra dispar, are described along with their subsequent effect on foraging behaviour. It was hypothesised that hungry predators would respond less and for a shorter duration compared with recently fed individuals when exposed to a model threat stimulus, thereby tending to take a higher risk of predation during feeding than satiated animals. A greater proportion of animals responded overall with the leg extension response compared with the swimming response, although the mean duration of the former was significantly shorter than the latter response. A significantly higher proportion of nonfasted predators responded, and for a longer duration than fasted individuals. The type of model used significantly effected the proportion of animals that responded with leg extensions but not on its duration. In contrast, both number of animals and the duration of the swim/motionless behaviour were significantly effected by stimulus type. The subsequent effect of these 2 behavioural responses on feeding behaviour was examined and showed that although about the same number of predators removed prey from their mouthparts during both responses, significantly more prey were dropped, and therefore lost, during swimming. The results clearly indicate the significant effects that defensive behaviours have on time budgets in foraging behaviour.  相似文献

Summary Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were characterized at 37 °C in ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) which were implanted with recording screws to record ABRs, and a thermistor to record brain temperature. After two weeks ground squirrels were reanesthetized and tone pips and clicks were delivered through a TDH-49 headphone.Recorded ABRs were found to vary in a predictable manner as a function of stimulus frequency and intensity. At intensities above 50 dB SPL, ABRs could be recorded over the range tested (2–32 kHz). An 8 kHz tone pip was the best frequency for recording ABRs at the lowest stimulus intensities. Latencies decreased as stimulus frequencies increased from 4 kHz to 32 kHz.  相似文献

Nest defence is a fundamental aspect of parental care in secondary cavity‐nesting birds, and predation or competition for nesting sites can involve different defensive behaviours. Because habitat quality determines breeding success, we were interested in whether breeding pairs of the Eurasian nuthatch, Sitta europaea, established in more favourable environment also manifest higher probability of cooperative behaviour during their nest‐site defence. To explore this relationship, we quantified behavioural displays of both parents and analysed activity budget ethogram data from simulated territorial intrusions performed in the chick‐feeding phase with one conspecific and two different heterospecific stimuli (dummies of nuthatch, starling and woodpecker). We found that paired individuals shared their roles during nest‐site defence to a considerable extent. Males had a significantly higher number of attacks on intruders than females, and females performed more threat displays and controls of the brood than males. Multinomial analysis of the cooperative behaviour suggested that pairs in a high‐quality territory had higher probability of reciprocal substitution of different roles towards a balance between attacks, threat displays and nest controls. Contrary to this, pairs in a low‐quality territory had less likely pairwise combinations of simultaneous behavioural states that are associated with effective nest‐site defence. The difference in response probability according to territory quality was, however, highly variable in view of the stimulus that was used in simulated territorial intrusion. Because individual roles and the complex behavioural repertoire of pairs altered in response to territory quality and potential nest‐site competitor or brood predator, our results suggest that the cooperative nest‐defence behaviour could be linked to the breeding success of this year‐round territorial species living in a heterogeneous forest habitat.  相似文献

Given the available empirical evidence on the benefits and costs associated with immune defence, a role for the immune system in the trade-off between current and future reproduction has been predicted. This hypothesis was studied in a free-living population of great tits (Parus major) by examining the effects of male removal on the immunocompetence, body condition, and recapture probability in the widowed females and their nestlings. Furthermore, we investigated whether growth and its relation to immunocompetence were affected in the nestlings. For a short-lived species such as the great tit, one could predict that widowed females will compensate for the lack of any male assistance in feeding of their chicks and that they consequently might jeopardize their own health. However, we did not find any negative effects of male removal on body mass or condition, nor on humoral immunocompetence against sheep red blood cells in the widowed females by the end of the feeding period. In contrast, we observed significantly reduced body mass and size as well as a reduced T-lymphocyte cell-mediated immune response (expressed as the thickness of the swelling to a subcutaneous injection with phytohemagglutinin) in the experimental nestlings compared to the control nestlings. In addition, the experimental nestlings showed a tendency for a reduced chance to be found breeding the following year. Furthermore, our results showed that in the experimental nestlings, which suffered from unfavourable growth conditions, tarsus length was inversely related to cell-mediated immunocompetence, whereas in control nestlings this relationship was significantly positive. The relationship between cell-mediated immunity and body condition was found to be significantly positive in the experimental nestlings while in control nestlings there was no relationship between both variables. The latter finding suggests different priorities of investment in body condition between different growth conditions.  相似文献

Distribution of food to early and late hatched nestlings was studied in asynchronously hatched broods of the great tit Parus major, the blackbird Turdus merula, and the fieldfare T. pilaris. Food distribution is related to the locomotory and begging behaviour and positions in the nest of these nestlings. Late hatched (small) nestlings were found to beg more often per feed than bigger nestlings and move more towards favoured positions in the nest to counteract selective feeding of bigger young. The functional significance of these differences in the behaviour of early and late hatched nestlings are discussed. It is argued that they are adaptive by 1) ensuring that each nestling survives when food supplies are ample, and 2) by mediating an optimal brood reduction when food is insufficient to raise the entire brood. The roles of asynchronous hatching, and selective feeding which follows from differential behaviour of early and late hatched young are discussed in relation to food conditions during the breeding season.  相似文献

Mid-frequency military (1–10 kHz) sonars have been associated with lethal mass strandings of deep-diving toothed whales, but the effects on endangered baleen whale species are virtually unknown. Here, we used controlled exposure experiments with simulated military sonar and other mid-frequency sounds to measure behavioural responses of tagged blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) in feeding areas within the Southern California Bight. Despite using source levels orders of magnitude below some operational military systems, our results demonstrate that mid-frequency sound can significantly affect blue whale behaviour, especially during deep feeding modes. When a response occurred, behavioural changes varied widely from cessation of deep feeding to increased swimming speed and directed travel away from the sound source. The variability of these behavioural responses was largely influenced by a complex interaction of behavioural state, the type of mid-frequency sound and received sound level. Sonar-induced disruption of feeding and displacement from high-quality prey patches could have significant and previously undocumented impacts on baleen whale foraging ecology, individual fitness and population health.  相似文献

Animals should invest in the immune system to protect themselves from parasites, but the cost of immune responses may limit investment depending on resource availability. In birds' broods, senior and junior chicks in size hierarchies face different rearing conditions, and thus we predicted that factors affecting immune response should differ between them. In asynchronously hatched hoopoe Upupa epops broods, we found that the immune response of senior nestlings was not related to their body condition, but positively related to risk of parasitism (which was indirectly estimated by laying date). This suggests that their immunocompetence is not limited by access to resources, and they can differentially invest in immune response with increasing risk of parasitism. On the other hand, immune response of junior nestlings was related to their body condition, but secondarily also to risk of parasitism. Our results agree with previous studies that have found significant influence of nutritional status and risk of parasitism on nestlings immune defence, but show that the effects of these environmental factors on nestling immunocompetence differ between nestlings occupying high and low rank positions in size hierarchies. The possible influence of maternal effects on the results found is also discussed.  相似文献

We investigated whether hearing advertisement calls over several nights, as happens in natural frog choruses, modified the responses of the peripheral auditory system in the green treefrog, Hyla cinerea. Using auditory evoked potentials (AEP), we found that exposure to 10 nights of a simulated male chorus lowered auditory thresholds in males and females, while exposure to random tones had no effect in males, but did result in lower thresholds in females. The threshold change was larger at the lower frequencies stimulating the amphibian papilla than at higher frequencies stimulating the basilar papilla. Suprathreshold responses to tonal stimuli were assessed for two peaks in the AEP recordings. For the peak P1 (assessed for 0.8–1.25 kHz), peak amplitude increased following chorus exposure. For peak P2 (assessed for 2–4 kHz), peak amplitude decreased at frequencies between 2.5 and 4.0 kHz, but remained unaltered at 2.0 kHz. Our results show for the first time, to our knowledge, that hearing dynamic social stimuli, like frog choruses, can alter the responses of the auditory periphery in a way that could enhance the detection of and response to conspecific acoustic communication signals.  相似文献

Characteristic frequencies of neurons in the cat auditory cortex (area AI) whose receptive fields are located in different parts of the basilar membrane of the cochlea were determined in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. The higher the characteristic frequency of a neuron in area AI, the nearer its receptive field lies to the base of the cochlea. Receptive fields of neurons with a characteristic frequency higher than 4 kHz lie on the first 10 mm of the basilar membrane. Receptive fields of neurons with a characteristic frequency below 4 kHz lie on the remaining 11–12 mm of the membrane. The effect of electrical stimulation of the center of the receptive field of a neuron corresponds to its response to a tone of characteristic frequency. The more the frequency of the acting tone differs from the characteristic frequency, or the further the point of stimulation from the center of the receptive field of the neuron, the less likely is the neuron to respond with an action potential. Neurons with a low characteristic frequency have wider receptive fields than neurons with a high characteristic frequency. Receptive fields of neurons with close characteristic frequencies on the basilar membrane overlap considerably. It was shown by the method of paired stimulation that excitation evoked in neurons in area AI by the action of a tone of a particular frequency is followed by long-lasting inhibition. This inhibition lasts longest and is most effective if a tone of the characteristic frequency is used.  相似文献

In species with biparental care, males and females share the benefits of investing in offspring but pay the costs individually. As a result of these evolutionary conflicts of interest between the sexes, it is expected that the two parents should follow different behavioural rules when providing food to the young. Such a discrepancy may be accentuated when parents have to choose between different subsets of offspring (e.g. large and small nestlings). We manipulated the degree of hatching asynchrony in Blue Tits Cyanistes caeruleus and quantified male and female feeding behaviour when nestlings were 7 and 10 days old. First, we tested for a difference in the role of the sexes during the nestling rearing period between experimentally asynchronous and synchronous control broods. We then used experimentally asynchronous broods to assess differences between the sexes in the pattern of food distribution in terms of number of feedings and prey types, between junior and senior siblings. When nestlings in experimental nests were 7 days old, females fed young more often than did males despite facing a trade‐off between brooding the smallest nestlings and bringing food to the nest. At this age, there was also a skew in food delivery in favour of senior siblings, whereas food was more evenly distributed across the brood when nestlings were 10 days old. We found no difference in how male and female Blue Tits distributed feeding visits among junior and senior nestlings. However, females fed the smallest nestlings with more spiders in comparison with their senior siblings. This could be related to their more suitable size relative to other prey types, their high content of essential nutrients, or both, and may represent a more cryptic form of parentally biased favouritism. We compare these findings with previous work on other species and discuss why parents did not feed junior siblings more frequently.  相似文献

Activity of 65 hippocampal single units was recorded during an instrumental feeding behaviour in three rabbits. Different neurons fire or change their spontaneous activity in one or more behavioural acts, which constitute the consecutive behaviour. In one or the other behavioural act single unit discharges occur both after and before some intermediate results. Participation of hippocampus in organization of the consecutive behaviour is discussed.  相似文献

In birds with biparental care, males and females often conflict over how much care to provide to their offspring and it may be substantially influenced by increased level of polygamy. In accordance with sexual conflict theory, males of socially polygynous bird species provide much less care to their nestlings than do males of most socially monogamous species. Most of previous studies, however, have used feeding behaviour as an index for variations in male parental care only. However, this may be skewed if polygynous males compensate for lower feeding assistance through the provision of other parental care such as protection of nests from predators. In this paper, we examine nest defence behaviour in the facultatively polygynous great reed warbler with respect to sex and type of social mating system. We recorded latency to the first arrival, distance from the predator and defensive reaction of each parent towards a human intruder. Socially polygynous males with two simultaneously active nests defended primary females’ nests less vigorously than socially monogamous males, whereas no differences were found between monogamous and primary females. Generally, however, they took a bigger role in nest defence than males in all cases. Our results support an idea that sexual conflict is driven by polygamy and that type of social mating system can influence nest defence behaviour of facultatively polygynous birds. This finding should be taken into consideration when studying nest defence parental care in polygynous mating systems.  相似文献
