In a series of three experiments during March-October, 1998, two species of captive-bred poison dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius and D. auratus) were exposed to Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, a recently-described chytridiomycete fungus (chytrid) that was originally isolated from a blue poison dart frog (D. azureus). All frogs exposed to the chytrids developed a fatal skin disease, whereas none of the control frogs developed skin lesions. The most consistent clinical sign in chytrid-exposed frogs was excessive shedding of skin. Gross lesions were subtle, usually affected the legs and ventrum, and consisted of mild skin thickening and discoloration. Microscopic examination of shed skin pieces and/or skin imprints demonstrated the presence of chytrids and was used for ante mortem and post mortem confirmation of chytrid infection. Histologically, there was epidermal hyperkeratosis, hyperplasia, and hypertrophy associated with low to moderate numbers of chytrids in the keratinized layers. These experiments demonstrated that Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis can be a fatal pathogen in poison dart frogs. The experimentally-induced disease in these frogs resembled cases of cutaneous chytridiomycosis that have recently been described in several other species of captive and wild amphibians.  相似文献

The origin of the amniote egg is one of the most significant events in the evolution of terrestrial vertebrates. This innovation was probably driven by increased egg size, and to find potential parallels, we can examine the derived development of extant amphibians with large eggs. The embryo of the Puerto Rican tree frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui, exhibits an alteration of its fate map and a secondary coverage of its yolky cells, reflecting the large 3.5 mm egg. Comparable changes may have occurred with the derivation of an amniote pattern of development. Future investigations should focus on the molecular organization of the egg. In the model amphibian for development, Xenopus laevis, information for embryonic germ layers, the dorsal axis, and germ cells is stored mainly as localized RNAs at the vegetal pole of the egg. These localizations would likely be changed with increased egg size. A review of the orthologues of the key X. laevis genes raises the possibility that their activities are not conserved in other vertebrates.  相似文献

Evolution of the amphibian tympanic ear and the origin of frogs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recent anurans plus all but the most primitive temnospondyl labyrinthodont amphibians are proposed as a monophyletic taxon, based on shared stapedial characters which are derived with respect to all other tetrapods. Within temnospondyls, the mostly Lower Permian dissorophoids are proposed as most closely related to Recent anurans, based on interpretation of the dissorophoid dorsal quadrate process and the anuran tympanic annulus as sequential steps in a character transformation series. The otic features described here reinforce the concept of the amphibian tympanic ear as a prior "invention" with no genealogical relationship to amniote tympanic ears.  相似文献

The nervous systems of animals as diverse as flies and mice share many conserved features, suggesting that such features were already present in their last common ancestor. As our knowledge of neural development increases, so does the list of conserved features, pointing to the existence of a highly sophisticated, single species as the origin of most extant nervous systems. Possible reasons for this unexpected monophyly are discussed, leading to the conclusion that the appearance of very different life forms, lifestyles and habitats requires the previous attainment of a neural circuitry that is sufficiently robust to cope with large changes without losing its overall coherence.  相似文献
